Queensland News Column
Queensland News Cristina Fornasier Queensland Columnist Email: Cristina_for@hotmail.com Phone: 0418 219 071 Well what a whirlwind time Covid is putting most through – very hard on club organisers to ensure shows run as per schedules. It is good to see most exhibitors understand when changes are made due to judges, weather etc.
Most knew Carol from years in the ring together to being judged by her. Condolences poured out through many social media pages as people took in the sad news of a friend that was always ready for a chat and a laugh.
If you have been a grumbler maybe you need to remember that a lot of work goes on behind the scene in all clubs to ensure a show actually runs.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by her son Ben and the link can be obtained in a post on Qld Dog Shows / Event facebook group.
Queensland has been quite lucky in this area as a lot of the other states have been in lockdown which meant NO shows for them. Although finally states are opening up again and shows have started to go ahead again for those states. Looking forward to live feeds and reading how they go.
The Sporting Spaniel Club of Qld advised in an announcement the loss of a very valued member of their club and long time Sporting Spaniel exhibitor and custodian of the Clumber Spaniels – Lyn Durrington. Condolences to Lyn’s family and friends along with the loving though of her menagerie of Clumbers and assorted beloved pets.
The first half of November has seen the sad passing of well known fellow Queensland exhibitors / friends. It became quickly known that Carol Speed passed away on the 9th November after a post from her daughter, Kim.
FROM THE FAMILY Just as an update, I’d like to let people know what’s happening following my Mum’s death. 8 of her 11 Clumbers have been washed, groomed 10 | K9online.com.au
and rehomed already, or are in the process of being rehomed. For compassionate reasons, the 3 oldies near end-of-life and with concurrent health issues were put to sleep.
The Qld Agility Committee were sad to report that their fellow friend and competitor Rohan Ally passed away on the 10th November after suffering a heart attack at Redlands Agility Trial held on 6th November (Saturday night).
The sheep, Bubba is now frolicking with a herd of 10 sheep and is loving it. Rhett the horse is spoken for and awaiting transportation to a new home. Callum the cockatoo is being rehabilitated and rehomed by Jimboomba Vets. We have decided not to have a public funeral. Most of my Mum’s extended family is from Victoria, and cannot cross the border into Qld due to COVID restrictions that won’t lift for several more weeks and we do not want to exclude them. Therefore, we are having a private cremation and a scattering of her ashes in a significant location for her. It’s my understanding that there will be some sort of tribute or memorial function at a dog show in the near future to cater for her many friends. During the week since we lost my Mum, there have been many people working both physically at my Mum’s place to help with the clean up, and others working silently in the background to support us by doing those little tasks that were escaping us in our overwhelming grief. Merilee has been instrumental in re-homing many of the dogs, and giving us advice on moving forward with legal and other issues. Although she wasn’t here, she was in regular contact and was very supportive. Dee managed to round up a small army of workers to assist in the cleaning and removal tasks at the house and then in grooming and preparing all the animals for their new homes. Sue, Janelle, Rachael, Andrew, John and Sherrie, and several more whose names escape me at the moment, have been tremendous help and we sincerely thank them, especially for the massive clean up effort on Tuesday.
A thank you went to everyone who assisted Rohan, Meegan and Layla on the night. All are shattered by the news and send condolences to his wife Meegan and their young daughter Layla, to his son Levi and daughter Hadassah and the rest of his family and many friends. A GoFundMe page is being set up to assist Meegan and Layla – link to this fund can be obtained on Facebook page Qld Dog Show Events Group. The passing of these three people over a short space brings home to many how we should be embracing each day and enjoying our lives to the fullest. Contingency put in place to take care of our loved ones and of course our beloved dogs/pets. Take care all and reach out to those around you if you need to talk or just spend time with.
We’d like to thank Bay City Pet Transport for ensuring that the precious cargo being rehomed interstate will arrive safely at their destination. Thank you everyone for your support and kind wishes. I’m sure that my Mum would have been highly appreciative and very moved by the love and care people have shown. (Steven Durrington)

On to Queensland Show Scene Maryborough Kennel Club Inc Pam Sleep wrote after their shows I would like to send a very BIG THANK YOU to the judges - Jodie Wilshier and Glen Wilshier, David Staines, Margaret Broughton, Ainslie Carius, Janelle Mannell and David Weil for doing such a fantastic job getting through all those dogs over the weekend and especially in the heat on Saturday.
Maddie “Supreme Champion Casmai Misbehavin Madam” official Best In Show pic from Maryborough. Not perfect being at night and windy but had to have something for this amazing memory Thanks Kristy Roebig for getting this picture.
There was not one complaint. 4 shows in 44 hours and finishing early Saturday night, so the exhibitors could party or sleep. A BIG thank you to all the stewards, writers, grounds men and all the workers behind the scene. If it wasn’t for all the workers, there would be no dog shows for people to enter. So thanks, for giving your time and efforts into making these shows a success. Jasmin Birt’s, Irish Setter - Ch Eireannmada Bed Of Roses took out two of the Best In Show awards and one Reserve in Show from the Junior Class. Her Irish also won the group at all 4 shows. The following weekend saw Hervey Bay Kennel Club hold their three shows at the Bundaberg precinct – I was so happy to attend these and found the weekend to be most enjoyable as I caught up with many, I haven’t been able to see for some time. The weather was lovely although only a tad hot in the middle of the day, rain mainly held off and flooding of the highways didn’t start till after people managed to make their way home. Whew The club embraced ShowManager’s fantastic technology of Stewards using the online facility available, learning quickly as they went – a few were a bit hesitant but managed by using manual and online systems. What is also so fabulous about the system, certificates are available almost immediately, reports completed, graphs done and best of all Marked Catalogues available online (great for one columnist who doesn’t have to go searching for results or asking multiple people who won). Another Best In Show winner from the Maryborough weekend was Cassie Hatfields, Chinese Crested. Much to Cassie’s delight her special girl Maddie was awarded by Judge: Janelle Mannell in a extremely competitive line up of dogs 12 | K9online.com.au
Many club’s in North Queensland have already embraced the use of tablets for their stewards to record placings. Chris Coggan from Hervey Norman has provided clubs with his set up of tablets and data
to trial at various shows from Cairns down to Sarina, his generosity is greatly appreciated by many committee’s. So if your club is thinking about going down this track have a chat to Jeremy and Ruth Cook of Show Manager who will happily assist you and all your questions. They provided Hervey Bay with tablets to try the system out before putting out any expense for the purchase of tablets.

done very well with their limited outings. Fingers crossed for a more settled 2022 when we resume competitions in April. Love My Boys
Ch Paceaway Summer Reigns - Reigny was awarded BEST NEUTER IN SHOW. A huge thank you to judge Mrs Michelle Hammond for awarding my girls so highly. What a thrill and an honour for both girls to win under a judge who appreciates movement so much. An honourable mention to Ch Sarasota For Your Eyes Only ET CA - Penny got awarded 2nd in the Veteran Sweepstakes. Penny hasn’t been in the ring for years and she gave me 1000% today. Bad Mumma I am said Penny was 7.5 years not 8.5 years for veteran sweepstakes. A huge thank you to Lorraine Byrne for your help when things got frantic and photos for the Open Show.
Would love for a lot of the different Dog Sports to contact me and provide articles and points of interest so they can be included in this column. There is so many different activities we can do with our dogs besides the conformation ring, so please message or email me and I’ll happily include in next issues. Would also love people to send me their results so once again I do not have to go stalking pages and have people say I don’t include them in this column, everyone is welcome.
As Rosemary Sehl’s 2021 Tracking, Track and Search, Show season comes to an end in Central Qld due to the heat, (we are only active 6 months of the year).
Cheers for now and getting messaging (insert smile here)
Couldn’t be more prouder of these youngsters and their achievements

October seemed to be Wedding season amongst Queensland exhibitors. Many attended the wedding of Rikki-Lee Sharland to Sean Uttridge on the 10th. From all the photo’s over social media it looked a truly magical day for not only the happily couple but for those in attendance.
Next was the wedding of Jodie to Tom Morrow on the 17th October – another wonderful day for all. From all the lovely photo’s it certainly looked to be a day of fun and love. Again many from the dog world were in attendance to ensure that the day was successful and enjoyed.
K9online.com.au | 17
On the 22nd October also walking down the isle, was Shannon Hopper to Tracy (our very own K9Online coowner) at Cleveland Lighthouse.
Continuing with celebrations Kirri Jacobson turned the big 30 with a fantastic night with friends turning up all blingy.
From the beautiful photo’s the day looked to be just perfect for this lovely couple.
And finally it’s Formal season for so many including Liza Cassidy’s gorgeous daughter Isabelle, who looked absolutely stunning for the occasion.

Victorian News Column
Victorian News Mike Higgins Victorian Columnist Email: mikemonarkin@aol.com Wow. Here we go. Shows are back on with Melbourne exhibitors able to travel to country shows and vice versa. Also removal of compulsory mask wearing at outdoor shows except for when the judge is going over your dog. Unfortunately this means judges must wear masks while in the ring. Double vaccination is a non-negotiable requirement at this time for all who attend shows - with the exception of medical exemptions. It seems like it will be a requirement for 2022 as well. There are some exhibitors and judges who have made the choice not to be vaccinated and cannot participate.
First is the small number of people who actually run our shows. The same group of people steward, ticket write or work to run the shows. Many Clubs share the same Secretary, most allbreed Clubs barely have a Committee. Look around at the officials at any show and most are in the 60+ age group. They are people that have been in the dogworld for decades and are still contributing. However running shows with the added burden of covid restrictions became too difficult for some of these people during the past 20 months and some shows were cancelled for that reason.
Shortly interstate shows will be back on the agenda.
One of the threats to the continuation of dog shows is the aging membership. Without doubt we need more volunteers to ease the burden on the few who run shows so that YOU can sit at ringside chatting with your friends or take home a fringie.
There will be many young dogs that have never seen the ring having missed the opportunity for baby puppy classes and even older classes. How exciting it will be not only for the owners to get these out for the first time, but for everyone to be able to see these Covid pups. Victorian dogs have been having success on holiday in States where shows continued. Helen Chen sent Ch Lunasea Nothing Holdin Me Back to Tasmania where he was Best Exhibit in Group at Hobart Royal. David McCullough made up another Cavalier King Charles Spaniel when Caribelle Peppermint Creme got her title during her South Australian holiday. Pauline Grutzner watched from afar as her co-owned Schipperke Am Gr Ch. Rivendell’s Forged in Fire gained his Supreme Championship in Queensland in only 10 months of showing. Standby. Next month I will finally have wins of Victorian dogs in their home state to report So, as we get our dog show lives back it is time to consider some of the difficulties that have become apparent during our lockdown of 20 months.
Dogs Victoria has stepped in and taken over the running of shows for clubs that could not manage. Is this viable in the long term as it is mostly in name only again going to rely on the support of a small number of volunteers? The dogworld in Australia is not big enough to support a number of businesses who can run shows. To date, those who have run multiple shows have done it for supplementary income. They might do a good job but because there are few who offer this service it leaves shows in a vulnerable position if for some reason they withdraw the service.. Over the past decade many all breeds clubs have ceased to exist, particularly regional. DogsVictoria needs the income from entry surcharges so show dates are filled by starting new clubs or holding extra shows. The trouble with this is we are back to the issue of the same, usually older, people running more and more shows. If every person who exhibits decided to volunteer and donate just one day per year to working at a show then perhaps we could avoid the inevitable ‘professional’ show managers and inevitable increase in entry fees.
K9online.com.au | 19
DogsVictoria is a volunteer organisation. Generous members donate their time to maintaining grounds, training, judging, disciplinary matters, education and to the management of Dogs Victoria itself. Exhibitors at shows are the minority of Dogs Victoria members but they use a great deal of its resources with two show grounds to maintain. If you have never volunteered to help with shows, consider it. There are a variety of roles you can fill, from helping set up and takedown rings, gate keeping and covid-checkins, secretarial duties, ticket writing and even helping with catering. Happy showing everyone Mike

Hound Club SA’s Shows Report Thanks to Fiona Danaher On Saturday 16th October this year 2021, we held the Hound Club Championship Show, and annual Open Show. Last year’s October shows were cancelled due to COVID, but we were lucky this time and even managed an interstate judge, Mrs Nichola Lawton (WA). Ms Rachel Danaher (SA) was invited to judge the Open show.

Ch. Balkanablu Queens Gambit We want to say a big thank you to all the judges who recognise “Isla” qualities and her true Kerry type, we are so happy with how she is maturing and look forward to the future with this girl. This would not be possible without some grooming tips along the way and my team of helpers, I am really grateful to everyone who help handle her for me, particularly my Grandson Dylan Prior, as well as Abbey Martin and Alana Shepherdson. Thank you James Camac, Robert Watt and Sharon Ross for breeding this beautiful girl and entrusting us in her co-ownership. We just love her. Ch Whitewarrior Ice Falls Landing Great weekend for our newly titled 10mth old Alaskan Malamute “Marty”. Taking out BIS1 at Port Pirie’s second show under Utility Specialist Mr Rick Berwick (WA). 2021 ROYAL HOBART SHOW 20 – 23 October 200 Years of Showing ~ The Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania Against all of the odds, the 2021 Royal Hobart Show was able to go ahead. Southern Tasmania, including Hobart, had been in a three day lockdown which ended only 36 hours before the kennel section commenced; the judge was coming from Western Australia; the Tasmanian border remained closed to New South Wales and Victoria; and the weather forecast was gloomy. But despite all of this, the show went off without a hitch. A huge congratulations to the Kennel Section Committee.
Mrs Pamela Campbell (WA) judged all groups and General Specials over four days, eventually awarding Best in Show (and Best Open in Show) to the Affenpinscher Ch. Majomarc Dartagnan V Kazari, presented by Trudi Counsell. Runner-up Best in Show (and Best State Bred in Show) was the Shih Tzu Sup Ch.
