PIAA boarding kennels and catteries forum calls for change The Pet Industry Association of Australia (PIAA) recently held an industry forum for the boarding kennel and cattery sector. The forum came about due to a number of deaths in kennels over the Christmas and New Year period. After numerous talks, it was clear that there was a need for the sector to come together to discuss problems at hand and seek a way forward that ensures all kennels and catteries are transparent, accountable and complying with relevant codes of practice. The PIAA forum on February 2 saw nearly 50 in attendance on the day. Invited guests included RSPCA NSW, TAFE, AVA NSW and various owners who had recently lost pets in facilities. At present, all PIAA kennel members have to submit an annual PIAA vet audit and are also open to random inspections by PIAA. This is our benchmark for quality and sets PIAA members apart from non -member kennels. Unfortunately, PIAA membership is voluntary, so non-member kennels do not have to comply with PIAA Standards & Guidelines. There are many kennels in the industry that do not comply with any standards or guidelines. PIAA wants to ensure that this does not continue. Many councils do not require kennels to be registered. We would like to see that change. Many councils do not enforce their codes of practice. We would like to also see that change. In NSW the Code of Practice is twenty-one years old and is well overdue for an update. Many PIAA members, along with non PIAA kennel operators were also involved on the day. The member for Port Stephens Kate Washington spoke and pledged her support, as did RSPCA NSW and AVA NSW. Local media covered the forum and aired a story on NBN and an article in the Newcastle Herald. RSPCA NSW praised PIAA and said they had never seen or been invited to such a forum in 25 years. They announced that they would partner with PIAA on this issue and meet with the Minister to see the 21-year-old codes updated. AVA NSW has also pledged to join forces to move for change. The next step is to get councils on board as the regulators and ensure that the codes are updated, utilised, available and in the public eye. It wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be an overnight fix, but we have taken the lead on this and it is a great starting point.
