Last month, the world celebrated Valentine’s Day — an anniversary sugar-coated with chocolates, hearts, and touching (albeit sappy) romantic cards. For many U.S. natives, romantic gestures won’t be on our minds again for another 11 months; in Japan, however, Valentine's Day is simply the rst part of an annual reciprocal giftgiving tradition.
Exactly one month later, Japan welcomes White Day on March 14. White Day serves as a complementary partner to Valentine’s Day. Historically in Japan, women were the primary gift givers on Feb. 14, responsible for giving chocolate, owers, or something else to demonstrate their kokuhaku (confession of love) to their male partners. Hence the need for White Day. It allows a time for men to bestow a present to their partners. Today, the gender dynamics of gift giving and receiving are not so rigid, as both men and women exchange Valentine’s gifts with one another.
Yet White Day persists in modern Japanese society and has even been adopted by other countries in the Far East. Given this, it’s worth exploring where White Day comes from, and how it became a lasting a air.
Depending on who you ask, you might hear di erent origins for White Day. One prominent anecdote characterizes White Day as an invention of the National Confectionery Industry in 1978. Somewhat misanthropically, the theory posits that White Day is simply a marketing strategy for candy businesses to sell more sweets. Alternatively, some believe White Day was born after a woman in Fukuoka wrote a letter to a magazine lamenting the unbalanced nature of Valentine’s Day. She expressed a desire to have men give gifts to women for a change – perhaps even something as small as a marshmallow, she suggested. Her idea was well received, and by March 14, 1977, Ishimura Manseido, a confectionary shop in the Kyushu region, would be manufacturing marshmallow treats to commemorate the rst-ever White Day, or as it was referred to at the time, Marshmallow Day. As time went by, March 14 would be more commonly referred to as White Day, and it has been an enduring holiday since.
Article by Andrew Robinson | Design by Diana Lopez Hansen
If there’s a special someone out there you want to spoil this White Day, make sure you practice the Japanese art of sanbai gaeshi (triple the return). Whatever your partner gifts you on Valentine’s Day, give them something worth triple as much to show them the depth of your love!
For a simpler White Day gift exchange, you can never go wrong with the classics: marshmallows, white chocolate, candy, cookies, or any white-colored souvenir will do. Think of things like white bags, purses, jewelry, or clothes.
No matter how you celebrate, remember to do so with love and kindness. From our heart to yours,

Spring is in the Air! It’s finally here—the most wonderful month of the year! And no, I’m not just saying that because it’s my birthday month. The mild temperatures make it the perfect time for outdoor adventures. So, grab your camera, sunglasses, and those trusty walking shoes—it’s time to head outside! I’m excited to introduce you to some of our readers who are doing just that.
@juliayoko.c effortlessly posed against one of the island’s most breathtaking backdrops at Casa Sol. This Bali-inspired café offers a delightful array of food and desserts, including a smoked salmon plate, poke bowls, and refreshing acai bowls. The café is dotted with picturesque spots perfect for a photo op, like the oversized chairs, a cozy bird’s nest, and a giant swing. If you’re feeling extra special, you can even rent a gown! Casa Sol is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., inviting you to relax, enjoy, and take in the views.

@anastasiyanee took her kids on an exciting adventure to Senaga Island, where they stumbled upon MK Cafe. Known for its unique mackerel burgers made with locally sourced fish, the café also serves its signature brown rice flour bread, which pairs perfectly with the mackerel. If the food alone isn’t enough to entice you to make the trip down south, the stunning photo opportunities will definitely seal the deal—especially the spot where you’re surrounded by a breathtaking sea of blue.
@daphneyj is all smiles at the stunning Uken Beach, famous for its soft white sand and crystal-clear waters. Whether you’re swimming, camping, or enjoying gear rentals, the beach has it all—including restrooms, showers, and food options. This tropical oasis is conveniently located right on the shores of Uruma City, so you won’t have to travel far to experience its beauty. The swimming season runs from April to October.
We hope these spots get you as excited as they do us! Don’t forget to tag your next adventure with #VentureinOki for a chance to be featured in Venture Magazine!
