Craftchella

Honoring the Artistry of Okinawa! Honoring the Artistry of Okinawa!

Dubbed

as “Hawaii of Japan,” tourists visit Okinawa Prefecture for its beautiful scenery, beaches, hiking spots, caves, delicious local food, and friendly locals. Okinawa is also known for its history. One of the ways locals honor the unique legacy of their towns and cities is with inspired decorations on the “manhole” covers that beautifully illustrate a connection with their culture, history, or landmarks. The arts consist of seasonal flowers, castles, scenic spots, local foods, local animals, anime characters, festivals, and many more. These manhole cover arts are one of the many things that bring pride and culture to the Okinawans. They are trademarked and protected; a valuable part of the infrastructure and culture of the city.

Article by Janelle Rivera | Design by Megumi Kohama

The very first manhole cover art appeared in the island’s capital, Naha City, back in 1977 when a city employee wanted to feature how the sewage system helps the community and the sea life. This cover art displays a metal casting on a maintenance hole cover of the pattern of a well-known fish in Okinawa, the giant trevally, going around in a circle. This one piece of art captured people’s attention and gave prominence to many locals, which in turn sparked other municipalities and artists to create more manhole cover arts all throughout the island. Different types of manhole cover arts also appeared in mainland Japan for the same purpose years later. Over time, these art pieces have grown to be one of the many tourist attractions in Japan where vacationers go around different cities in the country to collect photos of and even buy merchandise inspired by these manhole cover arts. This not only improves Japan’s tourism, but it also shows appreciation for the country’s sewage system.

Here at Kadena Air Base, the Arts & Crafts team is paying homage to Okinawa with stamp art crafting as the headliner for this year’s long anticipated Craftchella event. By painting the base of a decommissioned manhole cover and carefully pressing the piece on to a canvas, a tote bag or any other medium, the imprint left behind is an enduring reminder of your time on this island.

Inspired by Okinawa’s unique and creative idea of decorating their manhole covers, the Arts & Crafts Center created an event every local artist and crafter dreams of. It is a way of bringing all the creative minds together in one place to share their talents for people to see. Miranda Doyle and the rest of the Arts & Crafts team chose manhole covers because of their history; how it started and how it has grown, not just here in Okinawa but all over the country. It is their “unique way in paying homage to the cities located on Okinawa, specifically around Kadena. Every city has their own unique manhole cover, so these designs are one-of-a-kind and exclusive to the island.” Craftchella will show the community the beauty and the culture of Okinawa through these artists’ masterpieces as well.

This year’s event is just that: a way to showcase people’s unique, rare, and extraordinary designs. It is an annual event that was introduced back in 2019 for people to shop and check out what their local vendors and small businesses have to offer alongside the many available resources Arts & Crafts provide. If you’re curious what Arts & Crafts has to offer, Miranda Doyle shares that their facility “offers so much more to the service members and their families than just a retail store.”

Craftchella 2022 will be held on Saturday, 15 October, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Arts & Crafts Center, located across from the Base Exchange, and is open to those with base access; it is open to people from all ages and all walks of life. This year’s carnival theme will consist of a myriad of things to do outside and inside the facility. Outside, there will be a vendor fair where people have a chance to get their hands on the arts they fancy, bouncy houses for little kids to enjoy, and food trucks for when you get hungry from roaming around. Inside, there will be face painting, photo opportunities, bisque painting, a do-it-your-own frame bar, a resin beach scene demonstration, a sublimation demonstration, a scroll saw craft in the wood shop area, and many more. The team is working on adding more and more fun activities to do. Each section contains:

• Vendor Fair – 18 unique and original local vendors to choose from

• Face Painting – Get your face painted with 10 different designs to choose from.

• Photo Opportunities – Take pictures of your creations in their photo corner!

• Bisque Painting – Each person gets one free Tiny Tot bisque upon entering the event.

• DIY Frame Bar – Decorate a frame of your choice with your own art.

• Beach Scene with Resin – Learn how to create foamy waves and a beautiful Ombre beach scene.

• Wood Shop –Learn how to cut out one of the 50 states yourself. *Must be age 8 or over to operate equipment.

Don’t forget to look down on the ground when strolling along the streets of this beautiful tropical paradise and learn about the prefecture through their manhole cover arts. Show your appreciation as they were created with pride and love. As the weather gets cooler this October and as you look for home decorations for the holidays, don’t forget to stop by the Arts & Crafts Center during Craftchella to get your hands on unique and original arts while having fun channeling the inner artist in you. Come support your local artists, friends, and colleagues!
