the season hats interview by lynzi judish

It’s rare to see a collection of hats so versatile that you can see such a variety of humans wearing the same pieces, ranging from Cara Delevingne, Kate Middleton, to Iris Apfel, all of which I bet would fall in love with a piece of their own. The Season Hats is run by a husband and wife team Paul and Selina. It was started to fill a gap in the market for premium hats that are both accessible and modern. They use traditional techniques alongside newer technologies such as laser cutting to create pieces with a bold minimalism. The simple, clean shapes work with a range of outfits and still look modern and fresh in years to come. I know you work as a duo with your wife. Tell me about how you met! We met at Cambridge University – I was studying Natural Sciences and Selina, English Literature. It was during freshers’ week and Selina was sent over to speak with me as the person she was with thought that we were on the same course, but was nervous to come and talk to me… no idea why as I don’t think I could be less intimidating! It now feels like we’ve been best friends forever, and have been a couple for almost all of our adult lives. What is it like working as a duo? We’ve got really different roles in the studio. Selina loves the business side – the sales, marketing, accounts and the website … actually, I’m not sure she loves the accounts but they get done. I’m really focused on the pieces – their construction, fit, how the collection looks as a whole. But it’s also great that we can talk about what the other is doing. We’ll always discuss individual designs and the edit of a collection. Selina really helps in making sure that the pieces are things that people really want to wear (we both will wear our samples in the studio to make sure that they remain comfortable and looking great for the whole day, but Selina always looks better in them!). It’s really important to us that people feel super confidant when wearing our pieces and we do everything we can to make sure that they do. Where do you draw inspiration for the designs? It’s always about the materials I’m working with – how they’re structured and how they move. I like to find a completely traditional silhouette and make it in an unconventional way. I’m really driven by the techniques that I develop – how to make something beautiful that makes the most of the materials that I’m working with. I try to make pieces that will not date, by taking advantage of both the traditional methods of hat making and properly integrating modern techniques. My pieces are always very precise – there’s a lot of geometry work that goes in to them – I’m still using my scientific calculator from my A levels. But then there’s an equal amount of physical draping and sculpting, instinct is more important than the calculator overall.

What is the biggest challenge in creating hats? It’s so hard to persuade someone to put on a hat – they might think that they’re going to look silly. We’re trying to make pieces that appeal to people who wouldn’t normally wear a hat (as well as embracing people who love them already!). It’s amazing to see someone nervously try one on and then it completely transforms them – the right hat can change your whole posture and attitude. Tell us about the SS16 collection. What is the collection about? What kind of woman would wear them? It’s our softest collection so far – still very geometric in terms of patterning and construction, but we’ve introduced a range of satin pieces. The satin headpieces all can be stored flat in bespoke boxes that we make for each one, but then unfold into dramatic silhouettes. Our shapes are super traditional - berets, coolies, Alice bands, Trilbies and wide brimmed Summer hats – but they are really about their construction and how the shapes are formed. The unfolding pieces are perfect for someone who is travelling to a wedding or racing abroad – they’re just so easy to pack into a suitcase without the traditional worry and complication of travelling with a big hat that you’ve no idea how to fly with. Can you tell us anything about your plans for your next collection? I’d like AW16 to get softer still. It’s so very simple, but I think that in winter, you want to feel warm, and protected from the elements. We’re looking at making folding pieces in beautiful Merino wools, and really rich and lustrous felts for the Trilbies. All of our collections to date have been very solid and graphic so we’re thinking of introducing some transparency so that it’s as soft visually as it is physically. Where can we purchase the SS16 collection? SS16 will be available at Fenwick (Bond Street), Lovehats.com, myluxboutique.co.uk and wolfandbadger.com as well as at Alan Journo in Milan and Angela Caputi in Florence.

VICTOIRE VERMEULEN interview by Lynzi Judish

It’s no secret that most of us go gaga over some stunning bridal wear, but the latest Victoire Vermeulen collection has us through the roof. Not only are the garments dreamy and elegant, yet chic and fashion forward, but the look book has me reimagining my dream wedding. So, I caught up with the designer and had a chat about the Envolee collection and what’s to come.

How did you get your start in designing bridal wear? Everything is a source of inspiration: an idea, a fabric, a trip, an elegant woman walking in the street... Did you always know bridal would be the industry for you? We’ve always worked in the wedding industry. Designing bridal gowns was a dream which came true just about two years ago. Tell me about the Envolee collection. The 2016 « Envolée » collection has both a mischievous and provocative feel. Where did you draw inspiration for this collection?

Envolee is one of many collections. Of all your work, do you have a favorite piece you have made? All our pieces are so different from one another. They still inspire us today. Your designs have so many fantasy elements. Do you find it hard to translate the fantasy into a wearable piece? Brides who choose “Victoire Vermeulen” are looking for couture pieces with a feminine and original touch. They tend to like the unusual feel of our collection. What’s next for your brand? NYC, London, Milan hopefully!

We got our inspiration from a very special and historic place, the “Domaine de la Dame Blanche” in the South West of France. It is a family-owned estate that our parents have restored and which is dear to our hearts. What kind of a woman would wear the collection? A free woman who is comfortable with being womanly and independent. A sort of “glamazon”, which keeps one foot in childhood and the other in a stiletto. A sort of beauty warrior who dares to wear an open-back dress.

Where were you born and raised? How does that influence your work? I was born & raised in Russia. I don’t think that particular place can influence so much of my work. I always was addicted to art and my point of view - an education can be inspiration for you, not only place of your birth. Where did you get your start in collages? Do you practice other art forms? I made my first collage in that distant time when I was studying at my university and I was working as a teacher at school. It wasn’t my favorite job; I was really tired after every long day at work. Collages were for me like a kind of therapy; I like collecting fashion magazines, I like contemporary art, and at the same time I can’t draw as a master. So I just thought, “what if I cut some models, ads, brands and try to combine them with unusual things for creating a completely new dimension?” Talking about forms - yes, I started from mailart handmade collages - now I make fashion digital illustrations for magazines. I love all technics - they are important for me. I learn new things using them. Where do you draw inspiration for your work? Do you have other artists that inspire you? I like visiting exhibitions of contemporary art; they are the best inspiration for me. I also like walking in the streets of my favorite city when the weather is quite good for it and I like visiting a swimming pool. Water can give me great opportunity to think about new ideas. My favorite artists are Rene Magritte, Henri Matisse, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Marc Chagall, and Ivan Aivazovsky. Are there any underlying themes in your work? Fashion of course, relationships between people, social norms, nature, science, and time. Do you have a collage you are most proud of? Yes, I am proud of my handmade set of collages - they are unique. I can’t change any of them. I especially love my collages which I made during Mode May contest for my favorite band Depeche Mode. What’s next for you? Any upcoming exhibitions or projects? I am going to make my next exhibition in Saint Petersburg. I am also going to participate in a new contest in International Union Of Mail Artists. Where can people purchase your work? People can purchase it here http://www.redbubble.com/people/ laskoradova (worldwide) or here www.artflashshop.com/#!mailart-/c1esc (only Russia) follow Lenka on IG! @ mailart_collage or @ lenkalaskoradova
