countries were followed closely in performance by the UAE, 30 percent; Bahrain, 27 percent; and Jordan, 24 percent. Thomas Milz, Managing Director, Volkswagen Middle East said: “So far 2013 has shown growth across our region as a whole, with the month of March demonstrating the strongest results to date. While we shall see positive effects from our attractive and full model range and strong market position, there will also be increasingly stiff competition in this challenging market.”
18 Launches Toyota to introduce 21 hybrid models within the next three years Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has announced that it will launch 21 new hybrid models from now until the end of 2015. The announcement of its vehicle deployment plans is part of the progress that Toyota has made in developing environmental technologies with the aim of conserving energy by improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions, and diversifying fuel sources by encouraging the use of electricity, hydrogen and other alternative energies. Considering that revolutionary advances in the performance of next-generation batteries are vital, TMC has developed—at a special-purpose in-house research division— new battery cells that offer substantially improved output density over all-solid-state batteries. TMC is also working on wireless battery charging, which will enhance the charging convenience of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) and EVs. In related developments, TMC has announced it plans to launch a vehicle with a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged AR engine, based on the 2.5-liter AR gasoline engine starting 2014. The new engine’s smaller displacement will provide for higher fuel efficiency while the turbocharger will improve output. TMC has likewise announced that improve-

ments such as an increase in fuel injection system pressure and the adoption of a compact, high-efficiency turbocharger have allowed the 1.4-liter ND diesel engine for passenger cars to achieve both high fuel efficiency and high driving performance. The adoption of newly developed exhaust gas cleaning technology has enabled the engine to pass the Euro 6, one of the most stringent exhaust emission standards in the world. Vehicles equipped with the new diesel engine are planned for launch starting 2015. Meantime, TMC’s newly developed continuously variable transmission, Super CVT-i, has achieved both superior fuel efficiency and smooth acceleration due to its unsurpassed transmission efficiency, improved integrated engine control and reductions in both size and weight. TMC expects global sales of its hybrid vehicles to surpass 1 million units in 2012. With its plan to launch 21 new hybrid models between now and the end of 2015, TMC forecast global sales of its hybrid vehicles to be at least 1 million units a year from 2013 to 2015.

errari President, Luca di Montezemolo said they chose to call this model LaFerrari because “it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence, in terms of technological innovation, performance, visionary styling and the sheer thrill of driving.” He said LaFerrari is for Ferrari collectors. The LaFerrari is the first car in Ferrari history to be powered by the HY-KERS system. The ICE represents the pinnacle of engine development and research, with a 6262 cc V12 that punches out 800 CV and revs to a maximum of 9,250 rpm, a record for an engine of this displacement. It also features a very high 13.5:1 compression ratio and a high specific output equal to 128 CV per litre. The engine is coupled with a 120 Kw (163 CV) electric motor, giving it a combined power output of 963 CV. The high torque levels available at low revs from the electric motor allowed the engineers to optimise the internal combustion engine’s performance at higher revs, thus providing a constant supply of exceptional power throughout the rev range. Total torque generated is in excess of 900 Nm. The hybrid system is composed of two electric motors developed in collaboration with Magneti Marelli – one powering the driven wheels and the second the ancillaries – and a battery pack attached to the floor of the chassis consisting of cells that are assembled in the Scuderia Ferrari department where the KERS for the F138 is also made. The Scuderia’s expertise allowed considerable savings in weight and

Three new Peugeot models on their way to ME French Lion posts 53% sales increase in 2012
French automaker Peugeot is enjoying soaring sales in the Middle East and with three new models on the way, the trend looks set to continue, company officials said. This even as Peugeot has increased its presence in KSA, tying up with a new partner, HHA Group, a well-known and established family in Saudi Arabia. Nine new showrooms and workshops were launched in the KSA in 2012, and the plan is to double that number in 2013 to ensure a larger and stronger presence of Peugeot in the region. Peugeot is basking in a 53-percent sales increase across the GCC countries in 2012 compared to the year before, according to Jamal Sahl, head Peugeot’s Middle East regional office. “We’ve had a product plan for the Middle East and it is working extremely well – our sales success and our impressive, ever-increasing market share bear testimony to this,” Sahl said. Part of the French Lion’s strategy has been the release of two new models a year but for 2013, Sahl said that has been ramped up to three new

releases for the Middle East. “The three models are completely new – we’re not replacing older models,” he said. The “new style” Peugeot vehicles include the impressive new 301 to be launched in the second quarter of 2013. The other two new models will be launched during the second half of 2013. The attraction and importance of the thriving Middle Eastern car market is particularly important to Peugeot at a time when all automakers’ market share in Europe is eroding. Sahl said, “Peugeot has always had faith in the Middle East market and is totally committed to it. Buyers in the region are attracted by our stylish products and our competitive deals. We have certainly started off the year confidently.” Also part of the Peugeot strategy has been a further evolution of the brand with particular emphasis on a simpler but more dynamic style. Buyers clearly like what they see as evidenced by the double-digit growth in the Middle East, Sahl said.

BMWs selling like hotcakes in Dubai
Is Dubai becoming a BMW city? If you are cruising down Sheikh Zayed Road, the main artery, and had a comeuppance with a BMW, chances are you saw a newly bought car. There were 1,168 BMWs sold from January to March this year, according to the German carmaker’s importer in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, AGMC. This means 13 BMWs were being sold everyday during the three months.
Compared to the Northern Emirates, Dubai, with its 14-lane highways and spaghetti flyovers, easily has the most density of cars. The city that never sleeps as Dubai has been known, posted a 38-percent double-digit increase in the sale of BMWs for the first quarter of 2013 together with the neighbouring Northern Emirates, compared to the same period last year, according to AGMC. AGMC likewise disclosed that Dubai was also the biggest Middle East market for MINIs, with an increase of 24 percent for the same period, totalling 149 cars sold. In a press briefing held April 15, 2013 at AGMC’s recently-expanded multimillion dirham flagship showroom on Sheikh Zayed Road, Osman Abdelmoneim, general manager, said UAE was the biggest market accounting for 51 percent of all
regional sales. Dubai, he said, saw the largest percentage growth in the UAE, with the double digit 38-percent sales increase. In all, AGMC said it delivered 1,336 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles to customers in Dubai and the Northern Emirates of Sharjah, Fujairah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm alQuwain. Looking ahead, Abdelmoneim said several key model launches have been planned for the year, which include the new BMW M6 Gran Coupé with a twin-turbo 560 bhp engine, the all-new BMW X5, the BMW 4 Series Coupé and the MINI Hatch. Abdelmoneim said the sales figures were due to AGMC’s enhanced customer service, extensive products and premium facilities. AGMC has invested over AED100 million over the last three years to upgrade facilities and services including the launch of an exclusive car drop-off option at Dubai International Airport called BMW airport service, new showroom and after sales facility in Fujairah, fast-lane servicing in Deira, Dubai and a 24-hour BMW mobile service. Moreover, AGMC won the tender to provide a fleet of luxury 7 Series models for the Al Majlis VIP passenger service at Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3.

Land Rover introduces 9-speed automatic transmission
Rover recognised its Middle East and North Africa (MENA) dealers on successes achieved in the fiscal year 2012/13. Accepting the award, Ashok Khanna, Chief Executive Officer, Al Tayer Motors noted that the recognition was the company’s sixth Dealer of the Year win with Jaguar Land Rover. “It is special for us as we won it in our 30th anniversary year,” he said, adding that with new models like the Jaguar F-type and the all-new Range Rover Sport expected to launch in the market soon, Al Tayer “looks forward to delivering an even stronger performance in the coming fiscal year.” The best overall Dealer of the Year trophy is awarded to the dealership that delivers outstanding performance across all areas of the business.
Land Rover introduced the latest in a long line of technical firsts at the recent 2013 Geneva Motor Show the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission for a passenger car. The ZF 9HP transmission is specifically designed for transverse applications, and is one of the most efficient and technically advanced transmissions ever used in a production vehicle. Land Rover is the lead partner on the project, working together with ZF, which is widely recognised as the world leader in transmission technology. Increasing the number of gear ratios from six to nine gives significant improvement in fuel economy and a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions. Smaller ratio steps give improved response during acceleration, improved shift quality, drive and refinement. The higher top gear not only reduces fuel consumption but the lower engine revs improve comfort and reduce noise when cruising at high speed. The 9HP is extremely robust and perfectly complements Land Rover’s rugged all-terrain ability whilst delivering exceptionally high levels of refinement and efficiency. The lowest ratio in the 9HP is
www.oncarx.com
17
far lower than the existing six-speed transmission and is specifically designed for off-road use, towing and more extreme on-road conditions like gradients and altitude, giving the driver a heightened sense of control. With extremely fast gear changes described by ZF as being “below the threshold of perception,” the 9HP is not only highly responsive but versatile too. Whereas the existing six-speed transmission makes shifts sequentially, the 9HP has a skip-shift function for much swifter downshifting under rapid deceleration or from greater driver input demands. “We are extremely excited about the 9HP which has been tailored exactly to dovetail with the unique attributes of our vehicles. It will add another layer of performance, refinement and efficiency, further enhancing Land Rover’s world class abilities,” said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director. The innovative adaptive shifting system matches the driver’s mood within seconds, sharpening up during brisk driving then slipping seamlessly into a more economical regime just as quickly when taking a more relaxed approach.
Launches New cars on the road
Volvo V40 hits GCC markets With characteristics from larger Volvos wrapped in a sleek, compact package, the car, designed for the premium hatchback market, the car has safety and driver support features that include Park Assist Pilot, Lane Keeping Aid, Enhanced Blind Spot Information System, Cross Traffic Alert, Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake and the world’s first Pedestrian Airbag Technology. “The Volvo V40 is the first new model that is fully developed according to our human-centric, ‘Designed Around You’ strategy that summarizes our approach to understanding people. It is more than just a compact hatchback; it can be personalized to fit all needs”, said Emre Karaer, Volvo Middle East sales and marketing director. The car’s new Park Assist Pilot makes parallel parking easy and precise by taking over and operating the steering wheel while the driver handles the gearbox and controls the car’s speed. The parking manoeuvre is based on front, rear and side-facing ultrasonic sensors. The new Lane Keeping Aid in the V40 helps the
driver stay in the intended lane. This feature applies extra steering torque to the steering column when the car gets close to a lane marking and is about to leave the lane. The system is active at speeds between 65 kph and 200 kph. To mitigate the consequences if a collision with a pedestrian is unavoidable, the Volvo V40 features newly developed Pedestrian Airbag Technology, a world first. Sensors in the front bumper register the physical contact between the car and the pedestrian. The rear end of the bonnet is released and at the same time elevated by the deploying airbag. The inflated airbag covers the area under the raised bonnet plus approximately one third of the windscreen area and the lower part of the A-pillar. The raised bonnet and airbag will help reduce the severity of pedestrian injuries. Cars with the Pedestrian Airbag technology are available in the Gulf upon request. The V40 is the first Volvo to offer the enhanced Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), which is radar-based. The technology can now also moni-
18

tor and alert the driver to rapidly approaching vehicles up to 70 metres behind the car. Of course it still informs the driver about vehicles in blind spots on both sides of the car. Cross Traffic Alert uses the radar sensors at the rear end of the car to alert the driver to crossing traffic from the sides when reversing out of a parking space. This is especially helpful in tight and crowded areas where the side view might be limited due to infrastructure, vegetation or other parked cars. Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake is a technology that can detect if a pedestrian steps out into the road in front of the car. If the driver does not respond in time, the car can give a warning and automatically activate the brakes. No other car in this class features a similar technology. The Volvo Group has its origin in 1927 when the first Volvo car rolled off the production line at the factory in Gothenburg, Sweden. The brand Volvo has come a long way since, covering about 100 countries, comprising some 2400 sales outlets and service workshops around the world, including about 1500 in Europe and 400 in North America.

errari President, Luca di Montezemolo said they chose to call this model LaFerrari because “it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence, in terms of technological innovation, performance, visionary styling and the sheer thrill of driving.” He said LaFerrari is for Ferrari collectors. The Scuderia’s expertise allowed considerable savings in weight and
size of the individual components and the batteries weigh just 60 kg while providing the highest energy density possible for this kind of application. Aerodynamics Active aerodynamics play an essential role, as they allow a complete adjustability of the car’s configuration to attain LaFerrari’s exceptional performance. The engineers’ aim was to deliver the highest degree of aerodynamic efficiency ever achieved with any road car, with a coefficient of nearly 3, thanks to technical solutions honed with CFD analysis and fine-tuned in the F1 Wind Tunnel. To boost efficiency, the LaFerrari sports active aerodynamic devices front (diffusers and guide vane on the underbody) and rear (diffusers and rear spoiler) which generate downforce when needed without compromising the car’s overall drag coefficient. These devices deploy automatically on the basis of a number of different performance parameters which are monitored in real time by the car’s dynamic vehicle controls, thus guaranteeing the ideal configuration on the basis of the driving conditions. One further innovative aspect of the LaFerrari is the integration of its active aerodynamics and hybrid system with the other dynamic control systems aboard. This means the car responds intelligently to driver inputs, making for a seamless blend of unprecedented performance and unparalleled driving emotions. Proprietary Ferrari algorithms deliver optimal integration of the electric motor and V12 for instantaneous response. In cornering, for instance, the HY-KERS keeps the V12’s revs high to guarantee better acceleration on exit.
The car is also known as the F70 and by its project name, F150.

leanor Mustang, the stunning 1967 Ford Mustang driven by Nicolas Cage in the movie, “Gone in 60 Seconds,” is what I was reminded of sitting behind the wheel of the 2013 Ford Mustang. The Mustang, which was first unveiled on April 17, 1964 at the New York World’s Fair, is still a drag-strip star, to say the least. No wonder Cage was so in love with Eleanor in
that Jerry Bruckheimer car classic which saw him as master car-thief Randall “Memphis” Raines forced into stealing 50 cool cars in 72 hours for crime king Raymond “The Carpenter” Calitri - or see his younger brother Kip killed. Loved that glow in Cage’s eyes when he saw Eleanor, the prize catch, and talked to her like a man would to his lady. So, yes, one might say, the 2013 Mustang is a prettier Eleanor. I wonder if Cage had the same look on his face when he saw this car—and what he’ll name her.
The first generation Mustangs were built from 1964 to 1973.

ixties rock star Janis Joplin, in one of her popular songs, asked God to buy her a Mercedes Benz because all her friends were driving Porsches. Maybe she had not tried the Porsche—a class act of a car. Introducing the Panamera, Porsche is proudly presenting the first four-door Gran Turismo in the history of the company. This new model series sets the benchmark in its class not only in terms of superior performance and exemplary efficiency,

but also through a particularly high standard of personal comfort and exclusive features. Above all, the new Panamera offers no less than five worldfirst innovations to be admired for the first time in a production model in the luxury performance segment: Porsche’s new Gran Turismo is the first car in this segment with double clutch transmission or, to use the most appropriate term, the PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungs Getriebe; two, it is the first car in its segment to combine a start-stop system with automatic

Yet another breakthrough technology featured in combination with the Porsche-Doppel kupp -lungsgetriebe is Launch Control for optimum acceleration whenever required. Equipped with this transmission, the Panamera S sets a new standard in acceleration and fuel economy, Porsche’s Gran Turismo reaching 100 km/h from a standing-start without the slightest interruption of power in just 5.4 seconds and consuming a mere 10.8 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 26.2 mpg imp) in the EU5 standard (CO2: 253 g/km). Top speed with PDK is 283 km/h or 175 mph, top speed with manual gearbox an even more impressive 285 km/h or 177 mph. There you go Janis. Figures why your friends all drive Porsches.

riving is an experience. But if it’s not worth telling a story about then, it’s not worth the experience at all. Driving a Cadillac ATS is an experience worth talking about. The ATS has an industry-first: the CUE as it’s called, or the Cadillac User Experience, a comprehensive, in-vehicle system merging intuitive design with auto industry-first controls and commands for information and enter-
tainment data. It is designed to be unique for each driver, from the “simple user” to the fully connected “super user.” CUE pairs entertainment and information data from up to 10 Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices, USBs, SD cards and MP3 players with a vehicle infotainment system that reduces complexity through customized information, voice commands and fewer buttons and larger icons. Most of today’s luxury cars
42
www.oncarx.com
have around 20 buttons controlling the radio and entertainment functions; CUE has only four. The heart of CUE is an eight-inch LCD multitouch sensitive screen, seamlessly integrated into the top of the central instrument panel and a motorized, fully capacitive faceplate at the bottom concealing a 1.8L storage area. Capacitive technology refers to using electrodes to sense the conductive properties of objects, such as a finger. The vibrant LCD screen displays CUE’s home page, which resembles a smart phone’s screen, by using large, easy-to-target icons to execute commands. The ATS has an engine lineup that starts with a standard 2.5L four-cylinder and available V-6. The four-cylinder is next-generation engine. Increased efficiency was a priority for the new four-cylinder. It was achieved partly through lower engine friction, which was reduced by up to 16 percent using new technologies such as a variabledisplacement oil pump and an actively controlled thermostat. Cadillac proprietary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis techniques were used to develop an all-new combustion system with a higher compression ratio, which also helps boost efficiency. The 2.5L is rated at 202 horsepower and 259 Nm of torque. The award-winning 3.6L V-6 is rated at 321 horsepower and 373 Nm of torque. Both engines feature direct injection and dual overhead camshafts with continuously variable valve timing, which help optimize power and efficiency, as well as reduce emissions. And both engines are matched with six-speed transmissions, including the Hydra-Matic 6L45 automatic with tap-shift control. All said, enjoy the experience.
The 2013 ATS interprets Cadillac’s art and science design language in new proportions.

he world’s fastest roadster is a Bugatti. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse has set the world speed record for open-top production sports cars at the Volkswagen Group’s proving grounds in Ehra-Lessien where TÜV, the renowned independent German organisation for Technical Inspection and Certification, has officially confirmed that a top speed of 408.84 km/h (254.04 mph) was achieved. The Vitesse was driven by the Chinese racing driver Anthony Liu. The World Record Car was unveiled to the world for the first time at the recent Shanghai Motor Show 2013. The open top version of the 1,200 PS sports car, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, now also officially holds the world record. In the presence of TÜV, the open-top super car reached a maximum speed of 408.84 km/h (254.04 mph) at the Volkswagen Group’s proving grounds in EhraLessien, making it the fastest open-top production sports car in the world.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse has been on the market since the spring of 2012. Its power comes from an 8 litre W16 engine, which pours 1,200 PS and a torque of 1,500 Nm at 3,000 to 5,000 rpm to the road. Its high performance handling can be attributed to a racing chassis which together with extremely fast-acting shock absorbers and reinforced anti-roll bars guarantees exact control of both the four-wheel drive system and the entire vehicle. Other factors that enable such performance at the upper limits include a standard carbon monocoque with high torsional rigidity and an outer shell made entirely of carbon fibre. Keeping wind noise and air turbulence to a minimum in the vehicle’s interior is a particular concern with opentop vehicles. In the Vitesse, a specially developed roof spoiler along with an intricately designed windbreak guarantees calm open-top driving; indeed these were preconditions for reaching the record-breaking speed of 408.84 km/h. For the record-breaking drive, the Vitesse received a powerful dual-colour scheme in black and orange, perfectly translating its inner qualities into its exterior appearance. This special Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse will be available in a World Record Car (WRC) Edition, which is limited to eight vehicles. The price per vehicle is 1.99 million euros (plus tax).

Maybach high-end saloons Perfection takes a new name 50
www.oncarx.com
M
“To create only the best from the best, a vehicle that is the ultimate in wish fulfilment, with a distinctive character of the finest elegance and power”
aybach has been defining new standards in the top league of highend luxury saloons, whilst at the same time continuing the tradition of legendary Maybach vehicles which were part of the elite in the German and international automotive construction industry in the nineteen twenties and thirties. “To create only the best from the best, a vehicle that is the ultimate in wish fulfilment, with a distinctive character of the finest elegance and power” – this is how a Maybach flyer dating back to 1930 declared the company’s aim, and it still applies at Maybach in its entirety to this day. This clear avowal of the extraordinary obliges Maybach to ensure the high-calibre evolution of its highend luxury saloons. In its 125th anniversary, Maybach underlined its declared belief by exhibiting a special one-off model in honour of Wilhelm Maybach, the ingenious inventor of the first four-wheeled car: The Edition 125! –a car characterised by a large number of new and familiar customer requirements which can only be met by Maybach. Highlights The highlights are special contour lighting and the laser-engraved light motif in the front armrest, which depicts the alluring double-M in a curved triangle. The contouring light strips on the armrest are made of Plexiglas and are luminously showcased by invisible LEDs positioned inside. This also applies to the double-M in a curved triangle, which lasers have perforated into the leather

so highly precisely from the undersides that it only becomes visible when the lens positioned beneath it is illuminated by invisible LEDs. The lasered “Maybach 57 S” lettering above the B-pillar’s uplight underlines the fine character of the car. The interior is adorned with selected black Stromboli leather. Royal stitching with silver-coloured thread on the seats and the door centre panels also flags up the fact that this is a special model. New features Further new features of the Maybach Edition 125! painted in the new colours Tahiti Black/ Patagonia Silver include exterior mirror housings in silver carbon fibre, a glove compartment lid embroidered with the signature of Wilhelm Maybach, trim in silver carbon fibre/black piano lacquer, the steering wheel and selector lever in a carbon/leather combination, plus matt black 20inch wheels with eleven high-sheen spokes. A newly designed radiator grille with horizontal louvres painted in Patagonia Silver and high-gloss black vertical ribs round off the overall look perfectly. A badge in the engine area featuring “Edition 125!” lettering discreetly reminds the vehicle connoisseur once again just what a unique specimen this model is. Striking All the current Maybach saloons shine with their self-confident, effortlessly superior, distinctive charisma. It is above all the new dominant chrome radiator grille that emphasises their
exceptional status – it is meticulously crafted in two different variants. In the Maybach 57 and 62 models it is graced with 20 fine longitudinal bars and in the 57 S and 62 S Maybach models twelve solid double louvres with a “shadow strut” put the spotlight on the vehicle’s tremendous power. Both arrow-shaped radiator grilles are also higher than before, have considerably larger dimensions, are positioned more upright and further forward in the direction of travel – clearly symbolising the self-confident status and effortlessly superior, striking appearance. The designers have elevated the modified bonnet with a higher front upper edge and given it sharply defined contours. It has a shaped edge and appears distinctly arrow-shaped, more expressive and longer than previously. A restyled, horizontally structured bumper trim gives the Maybach saloons an even broader look from the front. Daytime driving lights featuring LED technology and bordered with a chrome insert have been integrated into the outer air intakes. The new exterior mirrors with optimised aerodynamics for less driving noise harmonise very well with the striking front. Their large mirror surface also means improved vision. Dark red tail lights of exquisite material quality complete with chrome embellishment, plus chrome trim used on the handle in the boot lid lend the end section a powerful, distinguished look. This in turn is underlined by new highsheen 21-spoke 19-inch wheels in titanium silver for the Maybach 57 and 62 models. The Maybach 57 S and 62 S models will in future be shod as standard with new 12-spoke 20-inch wheels painted in noble sterling silver. And all the models are available in the new, exclusively developed Bahamas Blue paint. As a result of the facelift measures, the new Maybach saloons gain an extra 11 millimetres in length and 17 millimetres in width when the exterior mirrors are folded out. Superb As one would expect, the Maybach MANUFAKTUR showcases masterly handcraftsmanship with no compromises in the interior, where materials of the highest quality abound. As is the case with everything
from Maybach, the utmost attention has been paid to every last detail. Every seam, every joint is perfectly executed, viewed from every angle this is a feast for the eyes, touching every single feature is a tactile delight – noblesse oblige. More powerful yet fewer emissions Even though the engineers at Maybach have increased the output of the Maybach 57 S and 62 S by 13 kW (18 hp) to 463 kW (630 hp), they were able to reduce the consumption figures (from 6.4 to 15.8 l/100 km) and the CO2 output (from 390 to 368 g/ km CO2) at the same time. The output of the 57 and 62 models remained unchanged, but consumption (15.0 as opposed to 15.9 l/100 km) and CO2 output
Characteristics of Maybach saloons are their very highly valued fine detail. (350 as opposed to 383 g/km) was also cut here. All the Maybach twelve-cylinder engines meet the EU5 standard/LEV2. Warranty To coincide with the facelift, Maybach has introduced a new warranty policy. With the countryspecific Maybach service and warranty packages
Excellent and Basic, service and warranty are covered up to a vehicle age of eight years or a mileage of 200,000 kilometres/125,000 miles. After this point the life-long mobility warranty applies. The numerous different variants of the Maybach service and warranty package can be purchased at various points in time and extended again according to personal requirements, which means that it offers even more extensive cover in case of damage, plus calculable maintenance costs. Unique and masterful The name Maybach has always been synonymous with the continuous striving for aesthetic appeal, perfection, elegance and the ultimate in comfort. This is why the luxury saloons from the Maybach Manufaktur are painstakingly crafted by hand with the utmost skill and care. At least 30 days pass between the time a Maybach leaves its birthplace in Sindelfingen and the point at which it is handed over to the customer. The owner is the receiver of an automotive dream with enviable levels of spaciousness, fitted with the very finest woods, the softest leather and deep-pile carpets. It is for this reason that many customers prefer to travel in the superior comfort the rear of a Maybach offers as opposed to a private jet – sometimes for distances of over 1000 kilometres. In order to regulate the climate in the hugely spacious interior, the Maybach saloons are equipped with an unparalleled climate control system. The high-end luxury saloons are equipped with two leading-edge automatic climate control systems – one for the front section of the car and a separate second unit for the rear compartment. Sensors allow the air conditioning systems to respond to the temperature and air humidity, the intensity of the sun and the level of pollution in the outside air. Like travelling in a sedan chair Journeying in a Maybach means relaxing in peace and calm. If at all, noise from the road or airflow reaches the ears of the passengers as though from afar. The high-end luxury saloons from Sindelfingen possess nigh-on proverbial quiet-running characteristics. The smooth ride is all thanks to the carefully

There are interior appointments with different leather, carpet and headlining colours optimised, low natural body frequencies, a suspension with a hydraulic subframe and shock absorbers meticulously developed with enormous attention to detail. Also co-responsible for the exemplary smooth ride are the four-bearing propshaft, the differential with gears carefully ground-in by hand and the large wheels with tyres specially developed for the Maybach. Michelin had made no less than 27 tyre samples available just for the Maybach saloons, and it was only after lengthy tuning work that the best result was finally achieved. Individualisation Tailor-made individualisation is part of the recipe for success of the luxury Maybach brand. It offers its customers unique ways of customising the specification of its top-class saloons. The Manufaktur in Sindelfingen turns a whole host of special requests in reality: of crucial importance in the work performed are the materials and cutting-edge technologies used to offer an extraordinary visual and tactile experience. This is why the Maybach specialists repeatedly come up with superb new materials and paint finishes – many of them specially developed for Maybach and not available from any other vehicle manufacturer.

“
There was a time without time, where the moon shone high in the sky. One night, absent-mindedly, she approached the Earth and got caught in the branches of a tree. From the Darkness, a wolf appeared, projecting its Majestic shadow on to the hill. Howls and moonlight were witnesses of their loving relationship. But all stories come to an end, and the wolf returned to the wood while the Moon climbed back up into the sky”.
As legend has it on this magical night, the wolf caught the shining of the moon in its eyes, and the moon stole the wolf´s shadow to dress itself as night. Since that time, the wolf howls at the Moon for it to return its shadow.” It’s makers say Spano is a car born to mark an era, to be a masterpiece, a collector’s item of incalculable value. Spano appears destined to be the fastest and most powerful automobile ever built in Spain for commercial purposes. Following the example of the large automobile industry companies, an animal figure was chosen as the GTA symbol, in this case the wolf as a symbol of light which represents strength and courage. Besides, this animal happens to be the symbol of the coat of arms of the founder´s and company owner´s surname, Domingo Ochoa. Of the so-called “aquitano” origin, the surname Ochoa comes from Otxoa, and from the word Otsoa, meaning wolf. The logotype also depicts a red and white checked flag, these being the distinguishing marks of Spania GTA that has 20 years´ motorsport competition behind it. Engine GTA has developed a special engine for this car, and has opted for a V10, 8.4 litre engine placed in a longitudinal rear position. It has 900 HP and 1000

Nm torque electronically limited. GTA’s technicians have worked hard to enhance the compressor so that GTA achieves amazing performances at a top speed of over 350 kph with acceleration from 0 to 100 kph in under three seconds. These figures place it directly among the
five fastest cars commercialised in the world. The precision of the engine´s control unit helps it to increase power progressively under all circumstances. Spano also has an electronic power control system, supplied according to the customer´s wishes,
The dashboard has a large state-of-theart 7” LCD screen which regulates power from a minimum of 450 cv to maximum power. The gearbox is available in two options, all of which have seven gears: automatically sequential 7 speed with a paddle shift steering wheel or manual sequential. The chassis has been one of aspects on which special emphasis has been placed during the construction of Spano. The most state-of-the-art technologies have been applied to the automobile world, thus making Spano not only one of the few cars in the world with aeronautical components, but also a reference on the automobile scene. The chassis has been built completely out of carbon fibre, titanium and Kevlar, whose rigidity is four times greater than that of today’s presently commercialised supersport cars, which offers the best level of safety. With this technology, the weight
www.oncarx.com
57
of the monocoque is less than 80 kg, while total weight is 1350 kg, with all the liquids and the most convenient equipment on board. Thanks to its special chassis outline and the materials used, GTA has great traction capacity and is easy to drive, unlike what one might think of a car whose power is 820 hp. In this case, it offers a turning circle of 10.8 meters to assist driving, with very impressive manoeuvrability. To bring this huge potential to a standstill, GTA´s braking system includes 380 mm-diameter carbon ceramic ventilated disc brakes and 6-piston callipers supplied by AP Racing, with pneumatic assistance and ABS. GTA Spano also has a sophisticated traction control system. Exterior Spania GTA´s design department, directed
by Sento Pallardó, has strived to create a unique automobile that resembles no other car in any way. Thus, a preliminary design has evolved until the present-day, which has succeeded in combining sportsmanship, elegance and exclusivity in a single concept. In other words, a very different style to that which currently exists on the international automobile scene. One of Spano´s main distinguishing features lies in its lateral view, where doors fit perfectly into air intakes which, apart from performing an aerodynamic function, refrigerate elements such as oil coolers, power-assisted steering and brakes, among others. Its design is original and unprecedented, which is yet another distinguishing mark of Concept. As in all true sportscars, the doors have no frames. Access to the interior is accomplished by pressing the GTA logotype, rendering it a more elegant design without traditional handles. Its frontal view affords it with a strong personality along with its two large lateral air intakes and its convex bonnet, completed with an aerodynamic streamlining zone to facilitate the air flow, thus providing it an athletic look. At the rear, the design department has attempted to create the best way to channel the air that flows under the car. The resulting effect is a rear design with plenty of character, marked by the use of glass with its small openings that perform a refrigeration function for the engine. The wing fits perfectly into the design with under air channelling, while the two air intakes and the twin exhaust system emphasise the vehicle´s sport character. There is a rear barrel to channel air and to improve the aerodynamic load. The wing mirrors have been designed as a framework with a carbon fibre finish and a wing-like arm, built in aeronautical mechanised aluminium. The large glazed surface affords the vehicle a strong quality, another of its distinguishing features.
GTA has come
The vehicle has a patented interior lighting and liquid crystal shading system, and the degree of light required inside may be regulated. Its completely novel sun visors are set into the glass and boast the same technology. Its electrically-operated windows have been made according to state-of-the-art technology, in such a way that tracks are maintenance-free and work-problem free at various temperatures. The wheels, 19” at the front and 20” at the rear, are characterised by their angular shape. They have been designed specifically and exclusively for this car model, with offers a continuousness effect with the chassis. There is a flat exterior part that perfoms an aerodynamic function, offering greater resistance and involving less weight. The latest version of the car was featured at the recent 2013 Geneva Motor Show with a 900 bhp (671 kW) engine with 1000 Nm of torque, which has been electronically limited.

Lincoln MKT Talk about smooth and safe Engineers have come up with a system that makes you run on potholes and not feel a thing
T
he 2013 Lincoln MKT rolled off the production line with upgrades promising a dramatically improved ride, sharper handling, better fuel economy and new safety technologies including a segment-first, rear inflatable seat belts. It also comes with system called MyKey, which keeps parents assured that their kids or whoever is driving the MKT is running safe. MyKey allows parents or other concerned owners to restrict certain Lincoln MKT features when in the hands of a MyKey driver by simply programming the vehicle key through the message center to incorporate features such as a limited top speed of 80 mph; non-deactivation of a traction control system that limits tire spin; an audio system volume limited to 44 percent of maximum volume; and a speed alert chime at 45, 55 or 65 mph. Smooth ride Continuously Controlled Damping – included with EcoBoost V6 engine – enables Lincoln Drive Control by monitoring suspension settings up to 500 times per second, the real-time system adjusts the suspension 20 times per second to deliver more controlled handling with a smoother ride. The CCD control module reacts to the data by calculating the optimal damping force every 2 milliseconds or 500 times per second. Mechanical adjustments typically occur 20 times per second, but can be as rapid as 50 times per second. On average, large damper force adjustments (such as firm to soft) occur in just 11 milliseconds. For engineers, mechanical actions that occur in less than 13 milliseconds are considered real-time actions. CCD constantly reads the road surface and continuously adjusts the suspension in real time
www.oncarx.com
61
within the three selectable ranges – Sport, Normal and Comfort. CCD operates so quickly that it can react pre-emptively. CCD recognizes, for example, when the MKT is about to encounter a typical pothole. The system instantly tightens damper control to prevent the wheel and tire from crashing down into the full depth of the pothole. Typically, the damping rate increases by more than 150 percent vs. the system’s softest setting, helping to smooth out an otherwise harsh and jarring event. The system is so quick that inputs received at the front wheels are used to prepare the rear wheels to deliver a better driving experience. The fully integrated system delivers its on-road benefit by significantly expanding the chassis’s capabilities compared to a chassis with nonadjustable struts and shock absorbers, known as dampers by chassis engineers. Inflatable Rear Belts Second-row outboard passengers – often children or mature passengers – can benefit from available inflatable rear belts, a segment first. These advanced restraints spread impact forces across more than five times the area of conventional safety belts, reducing pressure on the chest while helping to control head and neck motion. Collision warning Collision warning helps prevent common traffic accidents. Forward-looking, long-distance radar identifies potential obstacles. When the danger of a collision is detected, the system warns the driver with an authoritative beep and a simultaneous red
warning light projected on the windshield. These warnings should be enough to allow the driver to brake before the accident. Collision warning also provides brake support. This function enables harder, quicker deceleration to help drivers stop or reduce speed and lessen the collision impact. Blind Spot Information System The available Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with cross-traffic alert can detect vehicles in blind spots during normal driving and traffic approaching from the sides when reversing out of parking spots. BLIS uses radar to detect when another vehicle enters the defined blind spot zone. A
light appears on the corresponding sideview mirror to indicate another vehicle is in the defined blind spot. Powertrain The standard engine for 2013 is a more powerful and efficient 3.7-liter V6 that includes twin

independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT). The ability to vary camshaft timing to optimize the opening and closing of intake and exhaust valves increases the engine’s power and efficiency. Horsepower for 2013 increases to 303 from 268, a 10 percent increase achieved with projected fuel economy ratings that improve to 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, a 1 mpg highway improvement. The MKT now offers more standard horsepower than the Audi Q7, Acura MDX and Mercedes-Benz R-350. 3.5-Liter EcoBoost V6 Nine out of 10 MKT retail customers opt for twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, an engine that provides V8 performance with the fuel economy of a V6. In terms of horsepower from optional engines, the MKT fitted with EcoBoost has no direct competition. The 3.5-liter gasoline turbo direct-injected (GTDI) engine produces 365 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and an expansive torque curve that plateaus at 350 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,500 to 5,250 rpm. Fuel economy is projected to be 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway. The EcoBoost V6 earned a slot on Ward’s 2010 “10 Best Engines” honoree list the year it was introduced. Lincoln MKT is equipped with two versions of the six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission, both with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V6 uses the 6F-50, and the more powerful 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 uses the heavyduty 6F-55. This transmission features high-energy friction materials, a larger ring gear and a specific torque converter that optimize the 6F-55 to handle
electric motor. This helps save fuel because the motor operates only when assistance is required, unlike hydraulic systems that run continuously. All-wheel drive is standard with the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6. In good weather over smooth roads at modest speeds – when AWD is not needed – the system intelligently routes power only to the front wheels, improving fuel efficiency. When driver input or road conditions indicate that slip might occur, the system sends power rearward to help prevent tire slip from happening in the first place (such as on rain-slicked or snow-covered roads).

Steering The steering system for the new MKT is improved, too. The gear ratio is quicker (15:1 for 2013 vs. 17.1:1 for 2012), making the steering more immediately responsive. All new MKT models benefit from electric power-assisted steering. EPAS replaces the traditional hydraulic-assist power-steering pump with an

MyLincoln Touch Drivers particularly benefit from the latest upgrade of MyLincoln Touch hardware that equips the new MKT with Lincoln’s most advanced HMI or Human-Machine Interface. The all-new instrumentation features a central speedometer flanked by two full-color reconfigurable LCD screens. The 4.2-inch LCD screens are controlled by five-way buttons on the steering wheel. The 8-inch multi-function LCD touch screen dominates the center stack and provides the visual and control interface for the entertainment system, phone, navigation and climate control. Driver-Assist Technologies The 2013 MKT offers a complete collection of driver assist technologies in addition to the array of six airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control and AdvanceTrac with RSC (Roll Stability Control). Lincoln MKT earned a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for 2010 and 2011. To earn the ranking, a vehicle must receive a “good” (the best available) rating in all four of the institute’s crash tests: front, side, rear and rollover, and have electronic stability control as an option. The MKT met all current requirements while offering much more technology to assist drivers.

Lamborghini Turns 50
The story of a perfect automobile Dean Martin, Elton John, Paul Mc Cartney, the model Twiggy, Princess Grace of Monaco, and the Sultan of Brunei had queued up in line to buy one.
T
he middle classes, crowned heads of state and Hollywood stars all queue up for a Lamborghini super car. An aspiring Lamborghini owner usually has to wait 18 months to receive the car of their dreams. Today, 50 years after the birth of the House of the Bull, a capillary sales network covering every corner of the globe books orders for cars which, despite the constant development and fine-tuning of production processes over the last five decades, are still delivered only after a long wait. This is because of the sheer number of orders, the company’s policy to produce fewer cars than are required to satisfy demand, the high percentage of hand-craftsmanship in the manufacturing process,
and the extensive personalisation options available for each individual model. The names on the Sant’Agata Bolognese-based manufacturer’s waiting list over the last 50 years show how democratic it is. Right from the very first customer, the musician Giusti who led the famous band at the Capannina nightclub in Forte dei Marmi, and who Ferruccio Lamborghini won over at the Turin motor show in 1963 with a 350 GTV still under development. When the Miura was presented in Geneva in March 1966, and then in Paris in June of the same year, personalities of the caliber of the Sultan of Brunei, Dean Martin, Elton John, Paul Mc Cartney, the Shah of Persia, the model Twiggy, Frank Sinatra and Princess Grace of Monaco queued up in line to buy one, together with Italian stars of the period including Gino Paoli, Claudio Villa and Little Tony. But a nostalgic Ubaldo Sgarzi - the Sales Director at Autombili Lamborghini right from the outset - remembers how initially, before the sales boom generated by the Miura, he used to promote the futuristic car manufacturer’s brand by visiting supercar owners and enthusiasts first in Italy’s main cities, and in following years throughout the world, so that they could test drive the new models developed in Sant’Agata Bolognese. Starting in spring 1966, Automobili Lamborghini’s Sales Office and production facilities were inundated with calls: “the telephones never stopped ringing, with customers from all over the world asking if their order was ready” - recalls Ingrid Pussich,

A 350-car tour across Italy is being organized to celebrate Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary. the company’s Sales Office and international relations assistant since 1965 - “I spent my days walking across the yard, with the order in question carefully noted in the lined notepad that was our order book, to check up on the progress of that particular customer’s car and to try and speed things up. “Often customers with famous names and backgrounds turned up in person at the factory gate to check up on how work was proceeding and to have a look at the dream-like place where it was performed. And while they waited for the mechanics to finish their work, they were entertained by a jolly Ferruccio Lamborghini who, in order to while away the time, took them to visit the nearby tractor factory. Over the years, many of these customers became our friends, staying for dinner in our homes and helping clear the table!”. Although the sales network was growing constantly (the brand’s ambassadors included Marquis Gerino Gerini in Milan and the Achille family with its network of contacts extending into the Middle East), there were also customers who wanted a direct link with the company and to arrange “made to

measure” deliveries to their homes. During the year, the company’s managers and engineers frequently set off for exotic destinations to deliver cars personally and, sometimes, to teach customers how to drive them, like the King of Morocco, Arabian princess Madawi and Liz Taylor who, they say, took her driving test exclusively to be able to drive the Countach she had bought. Life in the Lamborghini Sales Office has always been as extraordinary an experience as it is engaging, so much so that Director Sgarzi and his assistant Pussich spent more than 30 years there, also living through periods of financial difficulty when Countachs were manufactured only after receiving full payment in cash, and when new models to present to the market were produced by the company while it was in administration. But despite the trials and tribulations of the House of the Bull during these first fifty years of its history, cohorts of famous personalities and stars have fallen in love with these cars, which aren’t always the easiest to drive. The Countach was the the car chosen not only by Liz Taylor, but also by Malcom Forbes of the US publishing dynasty, by Formula 1 driver Keke Rosberg and by oil baron Walter Wolf, whose love for this particular model contributed to its longevity in the form of a “special” variant prepared for him by Ingegner Dallara. And then there was the Diablo, chosen by Arnold Schwarzenegger; the Espada, which perfectly embodied the car Ferruccio Lamborghini wanted to create when he began Automobili Lamborghini; and finally the futuristic Marzal (which remained a prototype and was never mass produced), driven by Prince Ranieri with Grace Kelly at his side at the start of the Monte Carlo Grand Prix in 1967. Today’s owners, served by 125 dealers covering every corner of the planet, include Ralph Lauren, David Beckham, Nicholas Cage, Kobe Bryant, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gerhard Berger and Tamara Ecclestone. And while it is true that the typical Lamborghini customer is slowly changing, with businessmen and professionals joining the ranks of the Sant’Agata supercar’s enthusiasts (and no longer just Arab sheiks and Hollywood stars), the cars produced by the “House of the Bull” are created to convey strong emotions, to arouse desires, and to give their owners extreme and uncompromising sensations...
Lamborghini is among the fastest road cars on the planet.

Roadster
The new BMW
It’s all about character…and a little bit of sporting flair
An updated version of the Roadster is ready for action, armed with a raft of additional powertrain and equipment innovations.
T
he interplay of classical proportions and state-of-the-art technology defines the unmistakable character of the BMW Z4 – and now an updated version of the Roadster is ready for action, armed with a raft of additional powertrain and equipment innovations. 0 to 100 kph in 7.9 seconds The BMW Z4 has a larger, five strong line-up of petrol engines from launch, with options for three four-cylinder and two six-cylinder powerplants. Their most significant shared feature is BMW TwinPower
Turbo technology, which ensures an exceptionally effective balance between driving pleasure and fuel consumption throughout the output range. The roadster’s hardtop can be opened at the touch of a button while the car is moving at up to 40 km/h (25 mph) in an automated process lasting 19 seconds. All variants of the new BMW Z4 already meet – as standard – the stipulations of the EU6 exhaust emissions standard due to come into force in 2014. The BMW Z4 sDrive18i takes to the stage as the new entry-level model. It is powered by a 2.0-litre engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology which develops maximum output of 115 kW/156 hp at 5,000 rpm. The new variant of the four-cylinder unit delivers peak torque of 240 Newton metres (177 lb-ft) between 1,250 and 4,400 rpm. The BMW Z4 sDrive18i is fitted as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, but an eight-speed sports automatic can also be ordered as an option. The new model accelerates from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 7.9 seconds (automatic: 8.1 seconds) and hits a top speed of 221 kph or 137 mph (auto-

matic: 220 km/h / 136.5 mph). Average fuel consumption for the BMW Z4 sDrive18i in the EU test cycle is 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres (41.5 mpg imp) with both the manual and automatic gearbox. CO2 emissions stand at 159 grams per kilometre. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology package for the new BMW Z4 sDrive18i includes twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-Vanos continuously variable camshaft control. An identical version of this technology package is also used in the engines – likewise 2.0-litre units – under the bonnet of the BMW Z4 sDrive20i and BMW Z4 sDrive28i. These engines can also be ordered with an eightspeed sports automatic gearbox with shift paddles on the steering wheel as an alternative to the standard-fitted six-speed manual. The automatic has been optimised to deliver even better acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph). The existing engine variants – the sDrive20i, sDrive28i, sDrive35i and sDrive35is – retain their places in the range. Comfort The new BMW Z4 delivers the driving pleasure customers have come to expect from the brand, fulfilling the desire for both sporting ability and comfort. Drivers can use the standard-fitted Driving Experience Control switch to select a configuration
to suit the situation at hand and satisfy personal preferences. COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ modes can all be called up using the rocker switch on the centre console. As well as adjusting the responses of the engine and DSC stability system, the different modes also alter the shift characteristics of the automatic gearbox, the responses of the Servotronic function and the mapping of the electronically controlled dampers, if these items are specified. These modes allow the driver to choose from a selection of distinctive and clearly differentiated set-ups for the car. Other items of equipment fitted as standard are xenon headlights, air conditioning, a heated glass rear

window, the Soft Close Automatic function for the boot lid and runflat tyres with a run-flat indicator. The BMW Business radio – including CD player, AUX-IN socket and six loudspeakers – is a standard feature in all the variants of the Roadster, while customers can also choose from options including the BMW Professional radio and the Professional hi-fisystem with 14 loudspeakers. The similarly optional Professional navigation system enables high-resolution map graphics – complete with 3D view – on the 8.8-inch iDrive monitor. The navigation data for the system is stored on an incar hard disk, which also provides 12 GB of capacity for personal music collections. The range of driver assistance systems and mobil-
ity services from BMW ConnectedDrive has also expanded once again. The new BMW Z4 can be equipped with features such as a rain sensor, Adaptive Headlights and High Beam Assistant. Cruise control with braking function and Park Distance 0Control with sensors at the front and rear of the car are also available. If the Professional navigation system is specified, the ConnectedDrive Services option allows use of internet-based information and entertainment services inside the car. This system must be fitted to enable access to the BMW Online portal and apps using the Control Display and iDrive Controller. The Real Time Traffic Information function is also on hand, supplying the driver with congestion warnings and diversion recommendations in real time. Apple iPhone owners can use BMW apps, for example, to receive web radio stations, display Facebook and Twitter posts on the monitor and ask for them to be read out. The range of BMW ConnectedDrive features available for the new BMW Z4 also includes BMW TeleServices, BMW Remote Services, Concierge Services and Intelligent Emergency Call with automatic vehicle location and accident severity detection.

5 days of crosscountry rallying have reinforced the status of the Desert Challenge as one of sport’s top events. 72

Roma clinches first Desert Challenge title Nani Roma clinched his first victory in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge held in mid-April this year to round off a dominant display in the cars category, while Marc Coma edged his way to a record seventh win in the bikes class to complete a unique double triumph for Spain. Despite a third stage win in successive days by defending champion Jean Louis Schlesser on the 296km Abu Dhabi Aviation Stage 5, Roma and French co-driver Michel Perin in a Mini won by 26 mins 58 secs from the familiar blue buggy of the veteran French driver, a six-times winner of the
event. Coma’s bikes triumph came after Sam Sunderland collected a ten minute penalty overnight for a basic technical infringement, denying the Dubaibased British rider a brilliant start-to-finish victory as a reward for outshining the reigning world champion and a host of other stars of cross country rallying. Coma won by just 32 seconds from Portugal’s Paulo Goncalves. Also celebrating victory at the finish was Qatar’s Mohammed Abu-Issa who came through a series of major scares on the Abu Dhabi Aviation Stage to
capture the quads title at the first attempt, winning by just over three minutes from the UAE’s defending champion Obaid Al Kitbe. Five days of world-class cross country rallying have reinforced the status of the Desert Challenge as one of sport’s top events. “It was another great week, and a lot of the competitors are already looking ahead to next year,” said Dr. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, event founder and President of the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE, the rally organisers.

‘For the tenacious, no road is impassable.’ A look into how super cars are born In 1880, two brothers, both blacksmiths, embarked on a plan to move from building and maintaining carriages into producing fast cars. Today, their legacy lives on in Spyker. 74

t was in 1880 when the Spyker Company was founded by two Dutch brothers, Hendrik Jan and Jacobus Spijker, who were blacksmiths by profession. At first, the ambitious brothers concentrated on building and maintaining carriages in Hilversum, The Netherlands. In 1898, the Spijker brothers built their first Benz-engined motorcar with which they won immediate acclaim for the bodywork’s craftsmanship. By 1901, Spyker was already regularly competing in reliability and time trials. In 1901 Spyker entered the “Toer door Nederland” and instead of starting with the rest of the field in this four-day, 556 km long race, they did so two days later and won the race in just 23 hours. ered to Queen Wilhelmina of The Netherlands. It is still used for ceremonial Dutch events in the 21st century. In 1903 the company introduced the Spyker 60HP Grand Prix racer, the world’s first six-cylinder four-wheel drive car. A year later, the Spyker 60 HP Grand Prix racer competed in the Blackpool speed trials and finished third. And on went Spyker’s trailblazing glory through the years as the company introduced new versions and continued participating in endurance trials. In 1914 Spyker merged with Dutch Aircraft Factory N.V. and the company motto became: “Nulla Tenaci invia est via” which means “For the tenacious no road is impassable.” During the First World War, 100 Spyker fighter planes and 200 aircraft engines are produced.

In 2009, the production version of the Spyker C8 Aileron, the second generation Spyker supercar, made its debut at the 78th Geneva International Motor Show.
On 27 Nov. 27, 1920, the first Spyker 30/40 PK left the factory. The so called “Tenax” or C4 broke the Rolls Royce endurance record by 6,000 kilometres. The C4 completed 30,360 kilometres in the Dutch winter weather in just over a month. Over the following years, the standard C4 - not exactly a race car - claimed many iconic victories including the La Turbie (Monte Carlo) hill climb. By 1922, renowned racing driver Selwyn Edge, believing that technology has progressed enough to attempt to break the average speed record set in 1907, chooses a Spyker C4 fitted with streamlined racing bodywork for the challenge, succeeding by driving at an average of 120kph (74.5 mph) during two 12-hour periods. In 1925, 45 years after it was first formed, the original Spyker Company ceased to exist, coming back to life on Oct. 17, 2000 with the unveiling by

The Spyker C8 Laviolette was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show, while Spyker C8 Double 12 R was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show both in 2001. A year later, a street-legal version of the C8 Double 12 R is introduced: the C8 Double 12 S. In 2008, Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars, and Andrea Zagato, CEO of Zagato, unveiled the Spyker C12 Zagato concept at the 77th Geneva International Motor Show. The C8 Laviolette LM85 made its debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November of the same year. Today, Spyker is one of the world’s most coveted super cars.

Our Guest A one-on-one interview with key industry players
Quoris, a luxury mid-size sedan by Kia Motors, is selling in the UAE at an average rate of 12 to 15 units a month.
Are UAE residents into Korean cars? expectations. We even have a booking list—due to a limited supply, we have a booking list. CX: How many have been sold? MK: At a monthly average, we can say we are selling 12 to 15 units. CX: UAE is a high-end market with preference for European vehicles in terms of luxury segment cars. How do you position Kia Quoris, or Korean cars for that matter, against this backdrop? MK: People used to buy cars made in Europe but now that Peter Schreyer, a well-known car designer who used to work with BMW and Audi, is with Kia Motors, the Kia vehicles have been getting a good demand and expectation. People are now buying Kia cars with confidence. (For our readers’ information: Peter Schreyer was hired by Kia Motors as chief design officer in 2006. He was named Kia Motors president on Dec. 28, 2012)
Quoris, a luxury mid-size sedan launched by Korea’s oldest car maker, Kia Motors, in May last year, has been introduced in the UAE by the company’s local distributor, Al Majid Motors Co. (AMMC), which started selling the vehicle last November. But are there buyers? Car Xpress talked to Mr. Mohammad Khader, AMMC president, who said the Quoris, pitted against BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes Benz EClass among other cars in this segment, has exceeded sales expectations. AMMC will also be launching the Kia Carens, a compact multi-purpose vehicle, in June at its Abu Dhabi showroom. Mr. Khader expressed confidence the car will likewise receive good market response In the interview excerpt below, Mr. Khader explains why AMMC is upbeat about the vehicles. Car Xpress: Let’s start with UAE market share.
Mohammad Khader: We have around 5 percent. CX: What is your assessment of the market? MK: The market has been doing fantastic since the start of the year. We have a growth over the last year for the same period of around nine percent, which is good. We are expecting this growth to continue. CX: How is the Quoris doing? MK: This is the first time we’ve launched a luxury car. Quoris is doing fantastic. It has been exceeding our expectations as well as that of the customers’. The options of the vehicle are very, very high. The actual price of the vehicle is AED219,000 for the full option but we are selling it in an introductory market price of AED199,000. Quoris competes with the luxury BMW 5 series (Starting price: AED198,000) and the E Class Mercedes-Benz (Starting price: AED171,000). The Quoris has been on sale since last November. The market’s response up to now is exceeding our

CX: Let’s talk about Carens. What are your expectations from the market? MK: The new Carens is a seven-seater family car. We have it in two engines: 1.6 and 2.0. This car will officially be launched in the UAE on June 4, 2013. The car looks very promising judging from reactions of those who have seen it.
AMMC has 10 showrooms across UAE with the newest having opened on May 15, 2013 along King Faisal Street in Sharjah.

Continentals. The Flying Spur has come a long way indeed. Marc Hendz Brussels, Belgium
Dear editor, Thanks for running a feature on the new Bentley Flying Spur which, as Car Xpress said in its recent edition, can be personalized into a rolling office complete with sound proofing and connectivity. Mobile office has become the trend with executive cars. It’s worth noting that Bentleys have used the Continental Flying Spur name on two quite different classes of four-door cars since 1957, the first being a saloon body made to special order by coachbuilders H. J. Mulliner & Co. on a Bentles Continental chassis. These bodies were built in London on the various specification chassis made in Crewe between 1957 and 1966. The second is a standard manufacturer’s catalogue car, a four-door standard production line version of Bentley’s own Crewe factory-built

Loving the Jag—and Mr. Callum.
Dear editor, I totally agree with Mr. Ian Callum, Jaguar design director when he said an XJ “should be the ultimate in comfort, design and refinement.” Mr. Callum as you know submitted a car design to Jaguar when he was 14 in the hope of SPYKER C 8 AILERON landing a job at the car company. His first job was with Ford where he was employed from 1979 to 1990 after which he worked for another company. It was not until1999 that Callum became connected to Jaguar, having been appointed T as design director for the

There are 10 different Spyker models so far— among them the C8 Spyder SWB, C8 Spyder T, C8 Laviolette, C8 Laviolette LM85, C8 Double 12S and the C8 Aileron Spyder—all of which has its own unique qualities.
