Rising from the ranks as technician, Kevin Hughes has 26 years’ experience in the automotive industry. ‘I think I’ve arrived at an exciting time.’

On the anniversary of 35 years in business and following a successful year in 2010, AGMC, the importer of BMW Group vehicles in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, has appointed Kevin Hughes as new general manager. The Scottish national, who has 26 years’ experience in the automotive industry,

will take over the day-to-day business operations from Stathis I. Stathis after 35 years in the role. Hughes will utilize his vast experience to drive AGMC’s expansion as the company looks to build on its success over the years, particularly in 2010 when sales of BMW and MINI vehicles achieved a 19% increase over 2009 and Rolls-Royce vehicles achieved a 45% increase. Hughes will work alongside Stathis I. Stathis who will now become managing director of Al Batha Automotive Group, AGMC’s parent company. A graduate of Glasgow Caledonian University in Auto Engineering and Management, Hughes began his career as a technician before working his way up the corporate ladder within the automotive

field. Prior to taking on his new role in Dubai, Hughes was general manager of BMW Group in Nigeria and spent five years as general manager of Fouad Alghanim Automotive (FAA) in Kuwait. The appointment of Hughes is part of AGMC’s ambitious development plans for the business and its facilities, including this month’s completion of the final phase of an AED80 million expansion of its flagship showroom on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road. Commenting on his new appointment, Hughes said, “Taking over the role of general manager for AGMC presents an exciting challenge and one which I look forward to bringing my experience to the role and working closely with the strong team already in place, to take the company to greater heights. The design of the Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante, too, concentrates on the sheer essence of the design language the bodyshell is pure sculpture and free of superfluous decoration. Its profile follows the contours of a dynamic wedge measuring 4.39 meters long, 1.90 meters wide, but only 1.18 meters high. Open or closed, the top of the Spyder Performante can handle the very highest speeds. From the very first glance, the Spyder Performante is clearly recognizable as the open-top counterpart to the highly acclaimed and successful Gallardo Superleggera. The exterior modifications are all directed at increasing the aerodynamic effect in comparison to the Gallardo Spyder. Working closely with wind tunnel experts, designers from Lamborghini’s Centro Stile remodeled the front bumper – three-dimensional, deeply

recessed elements form trapezoidal frames for the large air intakes. Together with the V-shaped, sharply defined nose and the LED daytime running lights, the black elements give the front end a razor-sharp look. The design also optimizes the supply of cooling air and improves the downforce on the front axle.

The bodyshell Its bodyshell is made from aluminum, with cast node elements and extruded profile forming an extremely stiff framework into which the aluminum panels are integrated. The spaceframe structure is extremely impact-resistant and forms the basis for the super sports car’s precise handling. Against this background, the task of reducing weight by a further 65 kilograms (143 lbs) compared to the Gallardo Spyder presented a huge challenge to the engineers.

The Lamborghini experts handled the task as they usually do – with hi-tech competence and aesthetic flair. With its minimal weight and extremely high stiffness, carbon-fiber is the ideal material for a super sports car.

The engine In the Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante, LP stands for “Longitudinale Posteriore” and refers to the orientation of the V10 engine – which is mounted longitudinally behind the driver, just like every Lamborghini engine.

The number 570 refers to the maximum power output in hp, which equates to 419 kW and is available at 8,000 rpm. Equally impressive is the pulling power – the torque curve peaks at 540 Nm (398,3 ft lbs) at 6,500 rpm. The increase of 7 kW (10 hp) is the result of the new dedicated engine management strategy. The powerful V10, combined with the model’s weight reduction, gives the Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante breathtaking performance. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) takes just 3.9 seconds. Drive

The myth lives on The history of open-top Lamborghinis began with small volumes. In 1965, the company built just two of the 350 GTS, the open-top version of the first model to be produced in Sant’Agata Bolognese. Even more tragic from today’s perspective is that only one copy of the exquisite P400 Miura Roadster from 1968 was ever built. Lamborghini unveiled its first series production open-top in 1976 with the Silhouette – its V8 mid-engine with 250 hp offered refined performance, while a removable roof delivered that topless feeling. Its suc-

cessor was the Jalpa Speedster, which was launched in 1986. The V8 power unit with a 90-degree cylinder bank angle was once again mounted behind the seats, albeit enlarged to 3.5 liters – which, with the same output, guaranteed much better torque. The true hero among the open-top Lamborghinis, however, is by far and away the Gallardo Spyder – at least, when it comes to the number produced. The first generation appeared in 2006, with a ten-cylinder engine, 520 hp and an electro-hydraulic roof engineered for high-speed driving. The second generation followed in 2008 – the Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder. Its designed had been sharpened even further, its output increased to 560 hp and many detail improvement made throughout, demonstrating the dedication that Lamborghini applies to perfecting its super sports cars.

Echoing the Bentley S -Type of the 1950s, the Mulsanne features a bold frontal design dominated by the traditional Bentley matrix grille and highly prominent, classic round inner headlamps with chrome surrounds, flanked by two, smaller outboard lamp clusters, all featuring the latest in lighting technology. The iconic ‘Flying B’ retractable radiator mascot is available as an option. The long bonnet, short front overhang and long rear overhang help to convey a sense of

power and movement, reinforced by muscular haunches and sharply sculptured lines which flow gracefully from the front wings to the rear. Uniquely designed 20-inch wheels (and optional 21-inch) reinforce the Mulsanne’s powerful, sporting stance. Design Director Dirk van Braeckel explains the inspiration behind the Mulsanne’s distinctive appearance: “The opportunity to design a new flagship Bentley is something afforded to very few designers. The team set out to create a sculpted form that blended classic Bentley heritage cues with modern lines that allow the marque to stride confidently into the 21st century.” Bentley customers have a world of infinite choice when commissioning their cars. There

are 114 paint colours in the range that include everything from unusual heritage colours, special satin and pearlescent finishes and duotone combinations. But the choice does not end there. Through the bespoke world of Bentley Mulliner, unique colours can exactly match a customer’s vision and taste. Sumptuous interior, advanced technology The latest in-car technologies are discreetly placed within the Mulsanne’s sumptuous interior. A multimedia system with 40 GB hard disc drives satellite navigation, audio/ video, personal data, telephone and Bluetooth connectivity. The upper dashboard houses an 8-inch multimedia screen, positioned unobtrusively behind an electrically operated veneered door, while below sits a stylish, leather-lined MP3-player stowage drawer. A state-of-the-art 14-speaker audio system with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and 6-CD autochanger is provided as standard while the Naim for Bentley premium audio system may be specified as an option. This forging of two British luxury brands provides customers with the world’s most powerful 2200 Watt in-car amplifier, eight dedicated DSP modes and 20 custommade speakers, delivering an unparalleled sound quality. A personalised keyless entry system allows multiple preprogrammed configurations and automatically sets radio stations, phone books, seat, steering column and seatbelt settings (including ventilation and massage modes, both front and rear) and even the electrically operated rearseat blinds for side and rear windows. As a world-first, the keyless system operates with the stainless steel door handles which incor-

porate touch points to initiate communication with the key for verification and entry. The Mulsanne also features keyless start, having a stop/start button on the centre console. Re-engineered V8 engine The Bentley powertrain engineers set three objectives for the

Mulsanne: to produce the effortless torque from extremely low revs that customers expect of a grand Bentley; to maintain the highest levels of refinement; and, to satisfy strict current and future environmental standards through improved engine efficiency. While other powertrain configurations were considered early on in the project, it soon became clear that these targets could best be achieved with a totally revised version of the 6¾-litre V8 engine – the very configuration that had been used so successfully in the past. However for the new Mulsanne, all the major building blocks of the engine would be comprehensively re-engineered to integrate the very latest technologies. To achieve a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2, emissions, the Mul-

sanne V8 sees the introduction of two new control systems: cam phasing and, a first for the ultra-luxury sector, variable displacement. The pioneering use of these two technologies in combination allows the Mulsanne’s engine management system not only to adjust the V8’s breathing for improved engine idle quality and torque delivery, but also to close the valves of four of the eight cylinders for maximum fuel economy when cruising. In the new Mulsanne, the 6¾-litre V8 develops 512 PS (505

bhp/377 kW) while the massive torque (1020 Nm / 752 lb ft) is now delivered even earlier at 1800 rev/min. This dramatic improvement in torque delivery from just above idle and right across the rev range ensures that with a mere tap of the accelerator the driver is immediately rewarded with that characteristic deep, muffled V8 burble and phenomenal acceleration.
