Ever since the development of the LFA was given the green light in 2000, the chief engineer and his team were driven by a passion to create a world-class supercar, a car to make Japan proud. The development of the LFA was a challenge of a yet higher order: the order of obtaining an unprecedented level of sensual and emotional appeal. Meeting that goal required not only a high-revving engine, or impressive aerodynamics, but necessitated a car that moved its driver in more ways than one – a car that stirred each of the five senses. Lexus thus set out to perfect the sensual aspects of performance: the kind of response that sends the entire vehicle surging forward when you hit the accelerator, seemingly relentless power delivery, and an engine sound to give you goose bumps. Classical Lexus touches to this other worldly performance can be seen in the facilitation of mutual interaction between vehicle and driver, and in the intrinsic respect shown towards that driver, giving them confidence all the way to the limits. In this way, the LFA was designed to make the most of every moment each customer spends in its company, promising instants of sheer drive euphoria. While conventional passenger cars focus on getting there, the LFA is all about the journey. Although these inspirational, dreamlike moments will unfortunately only be experienced by a lucky few, Lexus firmly believes the spirit of the LFA will be the pride of any Lexus admirer. LFA CFRP production technology, including unique CFRP-to-metal joining, was completely developed by Lexus. A low centre of gravity is made possible by the use of dry sump lubrication1, along with placing peripheral components (oil pump, water pump) behind the engine. Furthermore, optimal placement of the transmission and the fuel tank in front of the rear axle adds to this application of centralised mass. This minimises weight shift during cornering and contributes to outstanding performance and stability. Lighter weight components, like the radiator and electric fans, are placed behind the rear axle. Combined with a front-engine and rearwheel-drive configuration, the short, wide and low body allows the LFA to achieve its target front-to-rear weight distribution of 48:52. Driver-centred The driver’s seat is positioned near the LFA’s centre of gravity. The centralised seating concept (with the seat between the front and rear axles and closer to the leftright centre) is made possible by the use of a rear transaxle and vertically stacked torque tube and exhaust pipes reducing the width of the centre tunnel. The driver placement is aimed to provide maximum car-to-driver feedback, especially under sport or high G-force driving conditions. Biggest Dubai International Motor Show yet opens

Organizers and representatives from car manufacturers at a press conference held Nov. 2, 2011 at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

With the Middle East enjoying robust growth across all sectors of the automotive industry, the Dubai International Motor Show’s position as the region’s largest and most influential automotive event has never been more important for the global motoring world. The five day event running from 10–14 Nov. 10 – 14, 2011 at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre is the largest show in the history of the motor show with over 60,000 m² of exhibition space and more than 150 exhibitors from around the world revving up to capitalise on the region’s potential. The Middle East remains a key growth engine for manufacturers, with many marques posting year-on-year increases in sales, and the luxury segment in particular expecting to witness a doubling of sales growth from 9.7 percent in 2010 to 20 percent by the end of 2011. According to forecasts presented by international automotive research company Automotive IHS, based on the sustained growth achieved to date, the region is well positioned to become the global leader for this lucrative segment. “It is clear that these market factors are driving the industry to the Dubai International Motor Show as a platform of choice for their regional and global launches,” said Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO, Dubai World Trade Centre, the organiser of the Dubai International Motor Show. “This is a region with high discretionary income and a population of

well informed motoring enthusiasts, making for an influential target market. The Dubai International Motor Show plays a key role in bringing not only regional, but global spectators and buyers.” With more than a million vehicles registered in Dubai alone, some of the world’s leading manufacturers have expanded their reach in the Middle East market, with McLaren opening their new regional headquarters in Dubai this year along with Brabus, who established their first sales room, tuning centre and workshop in the Emirate in June 2011. Buben & Zorweg ties up with Aston Martin

The Peugeot RCZ Cup As Peugeot launched its head-turning RCZ Coupe, the international Peugeot RCZ Cup came to the UAE with its inventive formula open to players of all levels. The Peugeot RCZ Cup has already distinguished itself throughout Europe. In 2010, the event was organized across 10 countries: England, Germany, Austria, Spain, France, Japan, Italy, Bulgaria, Portugal and Switzerland. This year, a new country joined the list, with the event having taken place in the UAE, from end of March until mid-May. Three competitions, open to all golf amateurs, were organized by Swaidan Trading and Omeir Bin Youssef, Peugeot’s dealers in the UAE. The first took place in the Arabian Ranches Golf Club on March 24th, followed by two other competitions in April. The Championship culminated with six winners, who will play against each other for the international Grand Finale in Paris, during the first week of September 2011.

Aston Martin unveiled the stunning new V12 Zagato endurance racer concept on the shores of Lake Como, Italy at the Villa D’Este Concours in May this year. Reviving a collaboration which has produced some of the most beautiful and sought-after cars in the world, the partnership took inspiration from the past to create a modern descendent of classics such as the DB4GT Zagato, V8 Vantage Zagato and DB7 Zagato based on Aston Martin’s ultimate performance interpretation of the Vantage range: The V12 Vantage. Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin said the Zagato design language is “a perfect complement to our design and engineering expertise.” He said that after 50 years of the two

16 Car Xpress

companies being associated with each other, the partnership has produced some of the world’s most iconic cars. “Of course, 50 years ago, Italian design houses were widely seen as leading the way with new designs. But now and supported by our independency, Aston Martin has its own in-house design ability so this new venture with Zagato is more collaborative than it perhaps would have been in the past. “The task for us has been to create a concept that is a natural successor to those iconic cars that have gone before. Matching the technology of the age with the traditional skills vital to deliver such a bespoke and exclusive sports car will lead to a strictly limited run of road going V12 Zagatos,” Dr. Bez said.

Work began in 2010 with initial meetings between Aston Martin and Zagato where sketches incorporating the design DNA of both companies were discussed and a decision was made to proceed with the project. Marek Reichman, Director of Design, said: “The Design team at Gaydon spent time refining the concept using a mixture of the latest computer based modeling techniques along with crafting traditional clay models to give a real world idea of proportion, stance and detail.” “The V12 Zagato is an elegant yet brutal design which reflects the great balance between race performance and pure Aston Martin style. The original DB4GT Zagato was a true icon, powerful and graceful; the new design is a true representation of the spirit

of DB4GT Zagato. The muscular organic forms define the thoroughbred nature of the car’s racing credentials.” Featuring a new handcrafted aluminum body, the V12 Zagato delivers a beautiful and muscular design not possible using pre-formed panel techniques. Using the influences and skill of nearly 100 years of heritage in the craft, every aluminum panel was formed using an English wheel and traditionally crafted body bucks. Each front wing alone comprises seven separate pieces of aluminum, combined and then hand finished to give one flowing form. Another iconic Zagato design cue is the double bubble roof created in this case from five separate pieces illustrating further the intensity of craftsmanship involved in the construction

of the V12 Zagato. Designed for the focused driver, the V12 Zagato has been honed with pure driving enjoyment in mind. The V12 Zagato combines Aston Martin’s most dynamic bonded aluminum platform with the power of the 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque. The V12 Vantage which forms the basis of the V12 Zagato has been proven on the race track as early as 2009 with a class win in its debut race at the 24 hour race at Nürburgring whilst being close to production standard with only essential safety modifications, reduced weight and re-tuned suspension but no additional aerodynamic enhancements. In 2011 the car has gone on to form the basis of the new Aston Martin GT3 race car un-

veiled last month. The first DB4GT Zagato shown to the public in late 1960 spent much of its life as a racing car after launch. Later perhaps the two most famous DB4GT Zagatos, registered ‘1 VEV’ and ‘2 VEV’ were raced with success by such names as Jim Clark and Roy Salvadori. The fascinating story of these cars and the nature of high performance and low weight which drove the Zagato projects gave the inspiration for the first two V12 Zagatos to be created as endurance race cars. V12 Vantage Zagato specification includes a bonded aluminum platform modified with a bespoke steel roll cage, front and rear double wishbone suspension with fully adjustable Multimatic DSSV Dampers and a 120ltr endurance racing fuel tank.

The huge torque, equal to maximum 660 Nm, ensures a powerful switch from any number of revolutions—even the slightest pressure on the accelerator is spontaneously transformed into thrust. The robotised e.gear changes gear faster than even the most expert driver. In addition, the

permanent Viscous Traction four-wheel drive system ensures that every force is constantly translated into movement. The Reventón accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds, with a maximum speed over 340 km/h. Essence The essence of the marque: just 20 examples of a design masterpiece

Clearly a Lamborghini, but nothing quite like it. A super car without equals, the Lamborghini Reventón is a road vehicle with an extreme specification and, at the same time, a limited edition masterpiece—a coherent style, angular with sharp lines, inspired by the very latest aeronautics. With just 20 produced, each costing 1 million euros without taxes (US$1.43 million) Lamborghini Reventón is a symbol of extreme exclusivity, yet still offering the extraordinary performance that makes the Reventón so unrivalled. Under a completely autonomous design, the Reventón possesses the entire technical and dynamic competence of the 12-cylinder Lamborghini. Lamborghini prides itself on being the extraordinary manufacturer of extreme super sports cars without compromise. Sensuality and provocation characterize every Lamborghini, with an aggressively innovative style. “However, theReventón is the most extreme of all, a true automotive superlative. Our designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre took the technical base of the Murciélago LP640 and compressed and intensified its DNA, its genetic code,” affirms Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili

Lamborghini S.p.A. Born in Sant’Agata Bolognese The Lamborghini Reventón has been entirely designed in Sant’Agata Bolognese, the original birthplace of the Lamborghini and the native home of every super car born under the sign of the bull. The design drawn up in Lamborghini’s Centro Stile (Style Centre) is fine-tuned in close collaboration with the Lamborghini Research and Development Department. Thus, the Reventón is not only “haute couture” but it also stands out for its elevated dynamism whilst being entirely suitable for every day use. Fighting bull The name Reventón has been chosen according to Lamborghini tradition. Reventón was a fighting bull, owned by the Don Rodriguez family. It is included in the list of the most famous bulls ever and is known for killing the famed bullfighter Felix Guzman in 1943. Inspired by the fastest airplanes The present day Lamborghini models are distinguished by the clear language of their shape. The coherent proportions of the Murciélago and Gallardo highlight their power and dynamism. Sharp edges, precise lines and clean surfaces—these are ingredients of a style reduced to the essential. Each element is created exactly according to its function; ornaments and decorations are totally foreign to a Lamborghini. Streamlined functionality The Lamborghini Reventón is a practical

illustration of the streamlined functionality and efficiency characterising the Centro Stile: it took less than a year to progress from the first ideas to the finished car. The complete design process from the first sketches on paper, to three dimensional computer models with 1:10 or 1:4 scale, right up to the real size prototype is organised around streamlined, fast, efficient work groups. A legend Since its foundation, Lamborghini has been a creator of trends in the world of sports cars and has always manufactured cars with an absolutely unmistakable character. Models such as the Miura or Countach, for example, were veritable forerunners and rapidly acquired the status of timeless classic cars. From the moment they are launched, every new Lamborghini promises to become a legend, destined to become a sought-after and precious possession. With the Lamborghini Reventón, Lamborghini has done it again; it has created an unequalled super car; the perfect synthesis between the exclusivity and appeal of a limited edition design masterpiece, and the dynamism and driveability of a standard sports car.

Track-sized high-performance (Carbon Ceramic) CCM brake discs and Electronically Controlled Braking system generate ultrapowerful yet stable braking. Responsive handling and engaging dynamics The very light and rigid CFRP cabin, combined with a front double-wishbone suspension and a rear multilink suspension, result in a very stable, controlled ride. Detailed aerodynamic engineering results in elements such as a flat underbody, a diffuser and a speed-controlled rear wing, which allows precise vehicle response at all vehicle speeds, thus creating unity between driver and machine. Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) integrates numerous vehicle dynamic functions that provide a high level of vehicle stability and preventative safety without

Audi presents the Audi e-tron Spyder, the study of an open sports car. The show car, with plug-in hybrid drive, is 4.06 meters long, 1.81 meters wide and only 1.11 meters high. The two-seater is equipped with a 300 hp twin-turbo V6 TDI at the rear axle and two electric motors producing a total of 64 kW at the front axle. The Audi e-tron Spyder’s low total weight of only around 1,450 kilograms combined with the high-torque TDI and the two electric motors results in respectable performance. The car accelerates to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, and top speed is electronically governed at 250 km/h. The e-tron Spyder can combine the powerful torque of its TDI – the diesel engine generates 650 Nm and the total of 352 Nm of its two electric motors during acceleration in a process known as “boosting.” The intelligent distribution of power allows for optimal dynamics in every situation. The targeted application of power to the front wheels improves longitudinal

the very high handling limit. The combination of a highly efficient TDI and electric drive also provides for excellent fuel economy and amazingly low emissions. The Audi e-tron Spyder requires on average just 2.2l diesel/100 km, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 59 g/km. A range of more than 1,000 kilometers is possible with the 50-liter tank. The open sports car can also drive strictly on electric power and thus with zero emissions over distances of up to 50 kilometers, such as in urban areas. The top speed of 60 km/h is just fine for normal driving.

dynamics while also improving lateral dynamics when cornering. This is because torque vectoring – the as-needed distribution of torque between the left and right wheels of the two axles – enables an exhilarating degree of driving precision and excellent agility. Thanks also to its low weight, short wheelbase and perfect 50:50 weight distribution for dynamic handling, the Audi e-tron Spyder has all the drivability of a gokart – good on bends and neutral right up to

evolution of the current Audi design language, while also providing initial hints at the design language of future Audi sports cars. It reinterprets the most important design elements that already characterized the previous e-tron concept vehicles. 1.81 meters wide, just 4.06 meters long and only 1.11 meters in height: these are the classic proportions of an open, highperformance sports car. The body of the e-tron Spyder comes across as extremely stocky due to its short wheelbase of only

2.43 meters – 22 cm shorter than that of the R8. In an apparent homage to motor sports, the frameless side glass surfaces taper downward toward the rear. They form a unit with the windshield, which is strongly bowed and inclined like the visor of a helmet. Interior Visual and functional references to the fundamental concept of lightweight construction characterize the purist interior design. They establish a connection between proven Audi

genes and new formal hallmarks. Typical for the Audi design idiom is the reduction of the architecture, controls and information output to the essentials in favor of a tidy overall impression. The slim dash has a curve that extends laterally into the door panels. With no need to allow for a transmission, shifter and cardan tunnel, the designers again took advantage of the opportunity to create a particularly slim and lightweight center tunnel and convex, arching center console

that breathes through two turbochargers and produces 300 hp. Peak torque of 650 Newton meters is unusually high, even in the sports car segment. The mid-mounted, longitudinal 3.0 TDI engine drives the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

for the e-tron Spyder with hybrid drive. The only control element other than that of the MMI is the flush-mounted selector lever for the automatic transmission, which extends upward from the tunnel when the vehicle is started. The cockpit of the Audi e-tron Spyder is also oriented toward the driver – a further characteristic Audi trait. Instead of the classic instrument cluster, the concept car is equipped with a large, display with integrated MMI functions and flanked by two round dials. Besides information about the speed, the revs of the combustion engine and

In ASF technology, the body’s supporting structure is made of extruded aluminum sections and die-castings. Aluminum panels are incorporated into this skeleton to form a positive connection and perform a loadbearing role. Chassis The normal distribution of the tractive power is clearly biased toward the rear axle in accordance with the weight distribution of the e-tron Spyder and the dynamic shift in axle load during acceleration. Similar to with a pure mid-engine sports car, roughly 75 percent of the torque goes to the rear and 25 percent to the front. If an axle slips, this balance can be varied thanks to the central control of the entire drive

world to successfully bring a diesel sports car to market, a decade after the Audi Cabriolet paved the way for diesel engines in this segment. And the Audi R8 TDI Le Mans concept car was the first supercar to be fitted with a twelve-cylinder diesel engine with 500 hp and 1,000 Newton meters of torque. The Audi e-tron Spyder also draws on this recipe for success – albeit in a revolutionary new combination. This marks the first use of a new generation of the six-cylinder, 3.0 TDI

system in combination with the ESP. The hybrid vehicle from Audi thus enjoys all of the advantages of quattro technology. The combination of the mid-mounted TDI engine and the two electric motors at the front axle also make it possible to intelligently control the lateral dynamics of the e-tron. As befitting its status, the Audi concept car rolls on 20-inch tires with a new blade design. 245/30 tires up front and 265/30 tires in the rear provide the necessary grip.

ASF body Systematic lightweight construction is a crucial prerequisite for efficiency and range, while also being the primary foundation for exhilarating driving dynamics. The Audi development engineers drew on the core competence of the company for the Audi e-tron Spyder. The body structure is based

The Lincoln MKX is a mid-size luxury crossover (CUV) from Ford’s Lincoln division and a de facto successor to the Lincoln Aviator luxury SUV. It debuted as a 2007 model in December 2006 as a production version of the Lincoln Aviator Concept shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Other than unique styling and some premium features, the MKX is closely related to its sister vehicle the Ford Edge, sharing Ford’s CD3 platform, powertrain, body panels, and other design elements. The MKX is of unibody construction and is natively front-wheel drive with available all-wheel drive. Its sole powertrain is a 3.5 L Duratec V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The MKX can seat up to five people. The MKX is a stark contrast to its predecessor, the Aviator, which was based on the Ford Explorer’s rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive body-on-frame platform, came with a standard V8, and was larger with seating for up to seven people. The 2007 MKX debuted with a base MSRP of $35,770 USD, ranging up to the mid$40,000 USD range when fully optioned. The MKX is built alongside its Ford Edge sibling at Ford’s Oakville Assembly Plant in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. A star was born The Lincoln MKX first appeared in concept form at the 2004 North American International Auto Show as a new and much different iteration of the Lincoln Aviator. In a significant departure from the larger, Explorer-based Aviator that was already in production at the time, the Aviator Concept was smaller and more car-like, being based on Ford’s natively front-wheel drive CD3 platform (the concept featured an all-wheel drive system). The redesigned 2011 Lincoln MKX midsize crossover has arrived,

featuring significant interior and exterior changes and some new technology, including the MyLincoln Touch driver-connect system. There is room for up to five people in the MKX, while some competitors offer a third row of seating to accommodate up to eight. For people who love electronic gadgetry — and that’s getting to be most of us these days — the new MyLincoln Touch system offers a cool new way to control an array of communications, navigation and entertainment technology. It replaces traditional controls with voice commands and LCD screens that have fiveway buttons like those found on cell phones and MP3 players, and it can be personalized for each driver who uses the vehicle. Refined The vehicle’s exterior design has been updated, although not drastically; the interior has been refined; and the powertrain has been improved.

Under the hood is the new Ford 3.7-liter Duratec V-6 engine, rated at 305 horsepower and 280 foot-pounds of torque. This is the same engine used in the base 2011 Mustang. Standard is a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, which has a manualshift option for those who like more control of the vehicle. But most people will leave the transmission in Drive and let it do its own shifting. No traditional manual gearbox is offered. The new engine boosts horsepower by 15 percent and torque by 12 percent over the 2010 model’s 3.5-liter V-6, which had 265 horsepower and 250 foot-pounds of torque. But even with the extra power, Ford was able to boost fuel economy to 19 mpg city/26 highway for the front-wheel-drive model, up from 18/25 last year. Features Among other features includes radar cruise control with collision warning and brake support. This system paces the vehicle to the one it is following, and warns the driver if there is an impending collision. It automatically will reduce speed and precharge the brakes to help prevent or lessen the severity of the crash. Parents will like the MyKey system, which can be used to set the vehicle’s top speed and maximum audio-system volume for young drivers in the family, all tied to the teen’s own key fob. Teens will appreciate the iTunes songtagging capability in the optional factoryinstalled HD radio. Car Xpress 45
