Arabian Experience

Enchanting jewelry Customs. Traditions. Beliefs.

16 Travel Arabia

Welcome to the mesmerizing world of Arabian ornaments.

W

hereas other cultures see jewelry as mere symbols of wealth and power, Islam has defined it to influence customs, traditions and beliefs such that there absolutely is more to the picture than meets the eye. From wearing them to ward off evil spirits to being blessed with patience, abundance and faithfulness, or even connote just how big a woman’s family is, jewelry in the Arab world, indeed has a deeper, more relevant meaning than the flashy, ostentatious, sometimes vulgar, display of decadence that it has come to be known in some quarters. Crossroads Ancient Arabia prospered as the crossroads of the world, both as a merchant of its own prized natural resources— primarily frankincense and myrrh—and as the buyer of goods from distant lands. The peninsula thrived in commerce and trade as the “gateway to the East.” Trade with Arabia also included spices, silks,

ivory and other precious wares bound for markets in Egypt and the surrounding Mediterranean lands. With the region’s prosperity came an indulgence in the precious materials of ancient jewelry. Not only the affluent merchant class that inhabited cities but also Arabian Bedouin women were major consumers of ornate jewelry. To fully understand and be immersed in Arabian jewelry, one only needs to know what the Qur’an says. Among others, it states that men should not wear gold jewelry or dress to show off; they must be modest and not show power or wealth through clothing or jewelry—thus they instead decorate their weapons and camels. Women, according to the Qur’an, have more freedom to wear jewelry to make themselves beautiful. Bedouin Bedouin jewelry is common throughout the Middle East, and is usually made out of silver. Jewelry was often a part of a bride’s dowry. A Bedouin bride carried her entire wealth on her person in the shape

of silver jewelry and it was hers to dispose of as she wished. Bedouin jewelry is significant not only for its aesthetic qualities, but also for the historical influences it exhibits. During the course of its own evolution over many centuries, the jewelry of the Bedouin has incorporated techniques and styles of the jewelry of other long-dead civilizations. This has excited archaeologists, as these very personal objects provide a window to the past and the people who owned them. Observers have noted that similarities in the design and craftsmanship of Bedouin jewelry can be attributed to the cross-influence that migration and trade had on the region. Trade routes As the ancient trade routes expanded, many new materials began to pass through the Arabian peninsula. Traders from the Far East introduced new materials such as amber, a mineral organic compound formed from the hardened resin of pine trees. Amber is believed to have originally come to the Arabian peninsula through Afghanistan. It varies in shade from dark brown to a light golden color and is most commonly used for Bedouin beads. Another popular material is carnelian, a quartz. This reddish-brown stone is semitransparent and most probably came from mines in the Sinai peninsula. Caravans not only introduced new materials to the craftsmen of the Bedouin tribes, but also contributed elements of the design of other civilizations’ artistry.

Islam does not allow men to show power or wealth through clothing or jewelry. Women have more freedom to wear jewelry to make themselves beautiful. Thus, Arabian men have tended to decorate their weapons and camels rather than themselves. Traditionally, jewelry has also been thought to have magical powers. Turquoise in particular is believed to ward off the “evil eye.” The tiny tinkling bells prominent on so many pieces of Arabian jewelry is thought to frighten malevolent spirits with their noise. It is customary to gift one’s wife with jewelry for the birth of each child.

Bedouin jewelry borrows heavily from the Phoenicians’ use of colorful glass beads and gold. With the advent of Islam in 622 AD, pilgrims from Africa and Asia traveled to the holy cities in Arabia and often lived out the remainder of their lives there. Ankle bracelets popular with both Bedouin women and children are thought to have originated in Africa and found their way with pilgrims who came to perform hajj. Status Meantime, a woman’s jewelry also symbolizes her status as a married woman and later as a mother, as it is customary to gift one’s wife with jewelry for the birth of each child. Jewelry is also popular among little children who are fond of wearing anklets and silver bracelets with small bells clinging from them. These kinds of jewelries have a myth attached to them. The bells are considered to protect children from all kinds of evil. Islamic motifs permeate jewelry design. Amulet cases containing tiny pieces of paper with verses from the Qur’an to protect the wearer are common. The sign of the hand on Saudi necklaces has been a talisman for hundreds of years. The number five is the mathematical equivalent of the hand, as well as representing the five tenets of Islam. Thus, bracelets or rings may be worn in multiples of five, and the preferred number of beads on an ornament or chains hanging from a pendant would also

18 I Travel Arabia

be five. Powers In Arabian custom, the color of certain stones is also deemed to affect their powers. Green, blue and red are regarded as possessing protective abilities. For that reason turquoise, agate, coral and colored glass are among the most popular materials used in antique jewelry. Turquoise in particular is believed to ward off the “evil eye.” At one time, popular legend had it that a turquoise stone would glow when its wearer was happy, but when the wearer was sad, the stone would become dull. Another popular myth was that the tiny tinkling bells prominent on so many pieces of Arabian jewelry would protect the wearer by frightening off malevolent spirits with their noise. Tiny silver bells, shining turquoise, deep-red garnets, glimmering gold chains, iridescent pearls and jingling coins have for centuries enticed the inhabitants of the Arabian peninsula and provided the foundation for their jewelry. Today, these elements, as well as their traditional designs, are still popular with Saudi Arabian women. “Hand of Fatima” Meantime, throughout northern Africa, Turkey, and in other parts of the Middle East, you can see Muslims wearing the “Hand of Fatima.” This is an example of Berber jewelry that has involved religion and superstition. Fatima was the

daughter of the Prophet Muhammad who married Ali, the nephew of the Prophet. Miracles were attributed to Fatima, such as when she prayed in the desert, it started raining. She is described as a faithful, holy woman. Almost all Turkish jewelry has a special meaning of its own and its own story, and the “Hand of Fatima Necklace” is one of these—involving religion and superstition. It is a lovely piece of silver and gold from which silver hands are hung and in whose good luck the women of Anatolia in Turkey believe. Its romantic story is as follows: One day Lady Fatima, was roasting halvah, a sesame honey cookie, in a pan in the garden when suddenly the door opened and her husband the prophet Ali entered along with a new and beautiful female slave. When Lady Fatima saw her husband’s beautiful young concubine, she was deeply grieved and in confusion began stirring the halvah with her hand. Because of the grief in her heart, she did not even feel the pain of her hand mixing the hot halvah. However, when her husband hurried to her side and exclaimed in surprise, “What are you doing there, Fatima?” she felt her hand burning, and the pain. Thus it is from that day on the hand of the Lady Fatima has been used in the Islamic world as a symbol of patience, abundance, and faithfulness, and thus it is that girls and women wearing this necklace from whose end the hands hang believe the hands of Lady Fatima will bring them good luck, abundance and patience.

ust when you thought you’ve done it all comes 8.2 kilometers of navigable underground river winding through a deep, pitch-black cave with its large chambers full of echoes and screeching, eerie bats. Now, any true-blue, down-to-earth nature lover with adrenalin rushing in his veins at the slightest whiff of adventure would be denying himself that spinechilling thrill, and the euphoric goose bumps that go with it, should he look the other way. In other words, he would be denying himself his reason for being if he passes on this and contend himself with grandma’s home-baked cookies! The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50 kilometers north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. It is also known as St. Paul’s Subterranean River

National Park, or St. Paul Underground River. The entrance is a short hike from the town of Sabang. Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is one of the 28 finalists for the “New Seven Wonders of Nature” competition, the winners of which will be announced on Nov. 11, 2011. It has also been cited as an example of best practices for biodiversity conservation and sustainable tourism in the Philippines The cave also has major formations of stalactites and stalagmites. It has nine species of bats. The lower portion of the river is subject to tidal influences. Until the 2007 discovery of an underground river in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River was reputed to be the world’s longest. The area also represents a habitat for biodiversity conservation. The site contains a full mountain-to-the-sea ecosystem and has some of the most important forests in Asia. It was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site on December 4, 1999. The Park has a range of forest formations representing eight of the thirteen forest types found in tropical Asia.

A destination so huge two weeks is not enough to see all

“The place is vast and in this piece I can only really talk briefly on three key places: Brisbane, Sydney and the road in between!” —Julian Redman

F

amous for koalas, kangaroos and other creepy-crawlies, Australia has a wonderfully diverse animal kingdom with fantastic topography—and yes, Australia is miles away, but it is well worth the trip! The place is vast and in this piece I can only really talk briefly on three key places: Brisbane, Sydney and the road in

24 I Travel Arabia

between! I will be honest, and apologies for those from the Gold Coast Region, but aside from Brisbane’s waterfront living, the city didn’t strike me as a memorable destination. But I know that the areas surrounding it would make it a worthwhile trip to Queensland—the likes of Byron Bay for a more “hippy” trip to the coast, and up to

the Whitsunday Islands; the latter I regrettably didn’t have time to see. If you do find yourself in Brisbane, you must take the tourist diet of a trip to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary for that must-have picture cuddling the famous Australian icon! So to Sydney—quite frankly one of the nicest places I have ever been! The

vibe there is simply electric; throughout the day when you walk along the harbour areas, there is a happy bustle of people, joggers, businessmen and tourists—and it felt safe. And with its social outlets comprising of restaurants and bars, it seems Sydney gave a huge welcoming hug the moment I got out of the taxi from the airport! The city life seems to stem around the harbour, which is a hustle and bustle of ferries and people, from men in suits to dudes in shorts; it is host to a cultural blend of people and feels reassuringly cosmopolitan. You will be automatically attracted to probably the most famous landmark in Australia, a walk to the Opera House and a stop at the restaurant just beforehand. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy sundowners on your first day in Sydney, overlooking the harbour and bridge (aptly named the Sydney Harbour Bridge). You can enjoy the pleasant climate and sociable atmosphere typical of the friendly and welcoming scene I found in Sydney. For the braver souls amongst us, you can do the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, which my brother did and proposed to his wife. I think she was scared of heights

26 I Travel Arabia

and would say anything to get down. This isn’t for the faint-hearted (walking the Sydney Harbour Bridge and/or marrying my brother!) but I have been told it’s an exceptional experience (the Bridge Walk!) and a great way to see Sydney from a new perspective. From the Opera House, you can continue to the Royal Botanic Gardens which is home to the Flying Foxes, known to be the largest bats in the world. They hang eerily from the huge trees within the park during daytime and it’s only when you notice someone staring up to the higher branches will you realize you have been walking under these ugly things for some time!! The remainder of the park is a usual plethora of flowers and plants unseen in the climate of the Middle East and of course the scurrying of “what-isthat-in-the-undergrowth….?” For many expats and locals working and living in Sydney, Manly is perhaps a place for the younger and cooler crowd who commute via ferry to the city centre daily; on weekends they enjoy the coastline and “out-of-town” lifestyle which has a strong community feeling. Whilst you are there you should check

Hunter Valley Vineyard

Blue Mountains

Brisbane walking through a restuarant called Australian White Ibis

Iron Man Rowing

out the “iron-man rowing” where both men and women compete for regional titles, powering their way into the surf and back again in the quickest time—often the sea beating them all when its rough! It’s a spectacle to see not only for the strength and resistance of the sportsmen, but also as the knack is to almost ride the boats “bareback”, which always raises a smile from the coastal onlookers too tired or occupied with the social scene to compete. Back around the other side of Sydney and you get to Coogee and Bondi— commercial spots for the tourist and locals alike. These two city centre beach stops are a great coastal walk; they’re also great for sightseeing, people watching and dining in the open air. It was here where I met up with my sister-in-law to commemorate those lost, including my brother, at the Bali bombing incident in October 2002. The local rugby team lost many in the tragedy so they erected a spot overlooking the sea in memory of all souls lost that day. Sadly wishing I didn’t have to leave Sydney so soon, I went into the Blue Mountains, which is a far cry from the bustling of the city and named so after the

blue haze the eucalyptus trees give off in the sun, it has wonderful steep walks with waterfalls, wildlife and spectacular scenery. Simply rent a car and head for the mountains; take some comfortable walking shoes (ok, trainers!) and of course a camera for those views and waterfalls! Next stop was the Hunter Valley, famous for its wine with the likes of Lindeman’s and Rosemount Estate. It was a great way to tootle around the small empty roads, stopping off at each vineyard to “do the tour.” Whilst I was there, I stayed in a great place called Tonic Hotel, a boutique chalet-style accommodation with a veranda and close to the great vintners of Australia. It was chic and cool inside with modern facilities, if you are passing through, it makes a worthy stop over: www.tonichotel.com.au. After a long drive through the Hunter Valley, the next stop before my flight back to Dubai was Byron Bay, a real alternative living spot on the coast of Eastern Australia which seemed to duck and dive from modern day materialism. The place was simple, no-frills and had an appetite for a good time. Aside from the sociable and perhaps distracted population there, the beach was vast for surfing and those long scenic walks took you to the most easterly point of Australia: Cape Byron and its lighthouse! If you wish to wear your “thongs” (flip flops) and board shorts, and even perhaps avoid a shower for a few days, Byron Bay certainly has a rustic charm only suitable for some. Having stayed for over two weeks in Australia, one would still need a considerable amount of time to explore its enormous landmass. It certainly will be a place I will travel to again—go to Melbourne, now voted the most Livable City in the World; and revisit one of the most favourite places I have ever been, Sydney!

Experience Skydiving in Dubai The sky is not the limit – it’s an endless playground!!

Have you ever dreamt of flying through the skies like a bird? Of experiencing ultimate freedom and fun? Then skydiving might be just what you have been looking for! So be brave, get down to Skydive Dubai and sign up for a tandem jump. Be warned though: I have been highly addicted ever since I took my first leap! Anyone over the age of 18 and in good health can try skydiving in Dubai: Once the date and time for my first jump had been fixed, I knew there was no way to bail out anymore. I had always wanted to try skydiving, so now I just had to put theory into practice. Super-excited, and just a little nervous, I made my way down to the Skydive Dubai drop zone located right on the beach behind the Habtoor Grand Hotel. After a formal registration process I was greeted by the team who would take care of me for the next hour– my tandem instructor and the videographer who would take incredible footage of my journey through Dubai’s blue skies. Their relaxed and super-friendly personalities made me instantly feel at ease and I knew Contributed by Stefanie Morgner

32 I Travel Arabia

I was in safe and very capable hands so I just immersed myself into the overall situation. Once geared up and briefed on the whole skydiving procedure, the three of us made our way down to the boarding area to hop onto the plane that would take us up to 13,000 ft. The plane carries around 20 jumpers, needless to say, the atmosphere on the way up was full of excitement and great anticipation. The views during the 15 minute plane ride to altitude were incredible – the Palm, the World, the Burj Al Arab and even the Burj Khalifa in the distance – literally breathtaking! And then things happened very quickly: the tandem instructor attached me to his harness, the plane slowed down, the door opened and there it was – the great open sky! Before I knew it we were standing right next to the open door and just seconds later we launched into the great unknown. It took a few seconds to realise what was happening and to get oriented but then I spread my wings and screamed with absolute exhilaration. What a rush!

We were racing through the skies with speeds up to 200 kph, nevertheless I had the impression I was floating on a fluffy, marshmallow-like pillow. Totally surreal. After approximately 60 seconds of freefall, my tandem master deployed the parachute and our journey towards earth slowed considerably. Finally time to take in the amazing views once again. The canopy ride down to the drop zone took around 5 minutes and was as much fun as the freefall – I even got to steer the parachute for a while. After a very smooth landing on both my feet I was overwhelmed with joy, pumped with adrenaline and ready to go again….immediately. Why had I waited so long to commit to this incredible experience? I firmly believe that everyone should try skydiving at least once in their lifetime, I am now totally hooked. After my highly rewarding tandem skydiving experience I signed up for skydiving school and am now a licensed skydiver myself. Your first jump will cost AED 1,750 and includes video and stills of the entire experience. For inquiries, visit www.skydivedubai.ae.

Learning to Scuba Dive in Dubai About the writer: Timothy Tapken is a student in Dubai, age 13, and learnt to dive along with several classmates thanks to an after school programme facilitated by his teachers at JESS Arabian Ranches and the Pavilion Dive Centre Jumeirah Beach Hotel.

Scuba diving lessons in Dubai are exciting, exhausting and amazing. The Pavilion Dive Centre offers a wide range of diving courses, from Open Water to Master Diving (including specialty diving) for both adults and children. The instructors are friendly and very experienced as they have taught a lot of people how to dive. Your first lessons are in the Jumeirah Beach Hotel pool, where the instructors show you how to set up the gear and the easiest way to put your wetsuit on because it is actually very difficult to get on. You can do an ‘Experience’ programme where you try out diving to see if you like it, but if you want to do a certification course you have to register online with PADI and complete an e-learning course alongside your lessons in the water. The courses are quite detailed, but easy to follow online. In the pool, the Dive Centre teaches you what to do if your mask falls off, if your regulator falls out your mouth, how to put on your weight belt in the water, and more! You swim up and down, getting used to swimming under water for a long periods of time. You learn buoyancy skills - how to remain still in the water, and how to swim without using too much energy or waving your arms around as you could knock someone’s mask off or hit coral

reefs with your hands. One of the most important things is your buddy. You never dive alone. You practice all your skills with your buddy and when you go out on the boat, it is your buddy who checks your equipment is set up correctly. Of course, the instructors also check everything, but they train you to do it yourself as well. Once we finished the pool courses, we went to Musandam, Oman (2 hours from Dubai), for the weekend, where we went out on a dhow, to a calm area that isn’t too deep. After suiting up, you literally step off the boat into the water, and begin a tour of the corals and fish – if you are lucky you might even see a turtle. You are with your buddy, but there is also always an instructor with you; safety is taken very seriously and we felt very comfortable and confident with our instructors. You’re under the water for about 50 minutes, which gives you a long time to explore. As a Junior Open Water Diver, you are permitted to dive up to 12 meters, but adults can go up to 18 meters. To dive deeper you need to complete the Advanced Open Water Certification Course. For the Open Water Diver there are four open water dives in a two day period, two dives a day. The instructors help you

practice the skills under water like taking your mask off and removing and putting your regulator back in your mouth. You are taught basic navigation too, swimming in a straight line and a square with a compass. You eat lunch on the dhow, and then do a second dive in the afternoon. On the second day you leave early to fit in two more dives before returning to Dubai. It is a great weekend out, and a good way to finish off your diving course. If you are visiting Dubai, you should do the e-learning part of the PADI course before you arrive, then you can complete your open water diving certification in only a few days. Since I learnt to dive in Dubai, I have been diving in Oman, Thailand and Fujairah, UAE. I am now a PADI Junior Advanced Open Water Diver and will be following specialist courses this year. To keep your certification current, you have to dive at least every 6 months, so that is a great excuse for me to go diving regularly! Travellers' Tips

I was gazing at the Arabian Gulf immersed in my bathtub from the 20th floor… …and I can say the experience gave me that mother-of-goosebumps, nervetingling, jaw-dropping, suspended feeling. For how could I be up high, soaked and that big body of water staring at me? Well, that’s for starters about how it’s been for my weekend hibernation, my decadent indulgence in la dolce vita, the good life; my hiatus, albeit brief, and the sweet inactivity—dolce far niente—that went with it at Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach. Soon as I got in to my room, an executive suite, unpacked and slid into the tub for my ablution, I got the feeling

34 I Travel Arabia

there’s certainly going to be more to it than meets the eye. Why not? The staffs have their hearts in their sleeves; the food is something you savour and enjoy, not eat; and the ambience shuts down every MB-sized folder in your mind except for one filenamed, RELAX. The room was magnificently designed such that you’d think comfort was what the crew had in mind when they were working on it: floor-to-ceiling transparent terrace sliding doors next to your bed which, by itself, is a couple of steps away from the bathtub; a big flat TV by the foot of your bed; a wooden sliding door separating the bedroom from the bar, and living room, which, by the way, has a bigger terrace separated by another transparent sliding door giving a full view of the gulf stretching as far as the eyes can see. Having refreshed myself, I went to the second floor where The Talk Restaurant was having Mediterranean Night. Quite frankly, I was a bit excited about how it will turn out. There was ravioli, pizzas, fresh fish at the live grill station, salad bar, and nine different big pots of everything from prawns to chicken. Oh my. Following dinner, I went back to my room, and again gazed at the gulf where, to my right were the glittering lights of

The Palm, and the Atlantis. Breakfast the following day was toasted bread and cold cuts—I didn’t want to stuff myself as I’ve been advised, repeatedly, to save space for that day’s Friday Brunch also at The Talk. Save space I did and it’s a good thing I did! Friday Brunch at Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach’s The Talk Restaurant is the lollapalooza of food fests! There was just so much on the buffet that having a little of this and that to try them all took me about an hour to get full circle. The Friday Brunch was indeed a ClassA bon vivant’s paradise. From sautéed duck meat to dumplings, and Alaskan crabs, there was just no end to the galore. The Talk can accommodate up to 180 people; that day, the number was close to that, all tables were taken; there was a jazzman strumming his guitar as people walk about from one food station to another, while others—stuffed bloated—stay seated waiting till they have enough belly space again for yet another round. And it’s always like this, I was told. Indeed, a weekend spent at Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach has more to it than meets the eye; an experience worth the bucket list.

With an everincreasing number of car rental companies in the UAE, and an abundance of decisions, knowing which company will give you the best price for model will make your journey far more pleasant. Hidden costs and insurance extras can be frustrating when you haven’t budgeted for them, so being well informed prior to selecting your vehicle is essential. Which car is right for you? First and foremost, consider which car is right for you. Will you be going on long drives? Kids to transport in the car? Opting for a specific car should be determined by how you plan to use it. A smaller car is ideal for short trips; larger saloons serve a greater purpose on longer journeys, when extra leg room is worth the added expense. Shop around Most car rental agencies offer daily and weekly options, depending on your needs, compare options to ensure you get the best deal. Ask the agency about their mileage policy, the insurance cover given. Asking the right questions and doing your research could save you time and money.

Special deals There are many agencies out there, the need for car hire companies to offer special deals gives the consumer a slight advantage, and many rental agencies provide economy cars at reduced rates during off-peak months of the year. Shopping around for weekend deals can provide a healthy savings. Car rental agency websites frequently offer discounts, checking online can present additional reductions in cost. ‘Salt Guru’ set to wow foodies at Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara Luxury resort brings first salt sommelier to the UAE Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara is offering a truly unique treat to food aficionados by introducing the first “Salt Guru” in the country, set to wow the taste buds of even the most dedicated foodies. Damyfno (Dams) Dato-On, the “Salt Guru” at Desert Islands, will guide guests through a trolley of available salts, explaining the concept and suggesting specific salts to accompany and complement certain foods and dishes. The guest’s choice will then be shared with the restaurant’s chef, who will prepare the food to perfection, bringing out the flavours with the chosen salt. Throughout history, salt has been such an important element of life that it has been the subject of many stories, fables and folktales. The salts available at Desert Islands Resort & Spa include: Hawaiian Sea Salt - Alaea Sea Salt is a tra-

Up in the clouds in Bangkok The menu is extensive and the cuisine uncomplicated yet trendy. Red Sky Bar

No visit to the City of Angels, Bangkok is complete without a rooftop dining experience. There are so many choices. On this occasion we ventured to the five star, Centara Grand which forms part of the Bangkok Convention Centre complex in the central business district. The hotel was conceived to resemble a flowering Lotus and incorporates the four life elements of earth, air, fire and water in its theme. Situated almost up in the clouds on level 55 of the hotel is the Red Sky Bar and Fifty Five, the award winning restaurant. The Red Sky Bar offers visitors a menu of innovative bistro-style dishes which can be savoured at the stunning rooftop location. The menu is extensive and the cuisine uncomplicated yet trendy. I started with the signature Red Sky Caesar Salad which features delectable smoked Canadian sockeye salmon. I was underwhelmed. However, my partner ordered the Lobster Risotto with half Maine lobster and risotto with bisque, tomato and basil. It was mouthwateringly delicious. The chef said it was one of their bestsellers. The rice was cooked to perfection and the flavours were subtle yet impactful. For our main courses we headed straight to the beef. However the menu did offer choices of pork, chicken and lamb with extensive options for fish and seafood lovers. I selected the Australian Wagyu Tenderloin served with potato gratin, caramelized asparagus and cognac green pepper sauce. This was indeed the Wagyu experience people talk about. The meat just melted in my mouth – I couldn’t help myself by thinking you don’t even need teeth to chew this. The contrasting flaContributed by Sharon Garrett

‘This was indeed the Wagyu experience people talk about. My partner ‘s eyes widened when his Char-grilled Darling Downs Beef Rib Eye crusted with Italian herbs and parmesan, served with white polenta, rocket and a rosemary jus arrived at the table. The presentation was superb and the flavours left him sighing in delight. We both like our steak medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. After such impressive starters and mains, we couldn’t wait for dessert. I chose the Lemon Tart with marinated orange, forest berries and whipped cream and my

partner selected their best seller, Apple B&B, the Red Sky take on Scottish bread and butter pudding with whisky ice cream. I really enjoyed the Lemon tart, but my partner felt let down by his humble pud. As a self-confessed aficionado of bread and butter pudding, he proclaimed, “mums is better.” All in all, we had the most wonderful experience. The service was attentive and friendly. The music was ideal and as the night went on became more upbeat. I would definitely return to the Red Sky Bar. For information visit: www. centarahotelsandresorts.com.

According to legend, one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting, Anna Maria Stanhope known as the Duchess of Bedford, is credited as the creator of afternoon tea time. Because the midday meal had become lighter, the Duchess suffered from hunger pangs at about four o’clock in the afternoon. At first the Duchess had her servants sneak her pot of tea and a few breadstuffs to her private quarters. Upon the realisation that others also suffered from the same hunger around this time, she adopted the European tea service format, inviting friends to join her. The menu centred around small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, assorted sweets, and, of course, tea. Thus, the tradition of Afternoon Tea was born.

The Art of Afternoon Tea The Sahn Eddar Ultimate Afternoon Tea at the Burj Al Arab takes the afternoon tea experience to an entirely new level. Drinking in the splendour of the Burj Al Arab from the moment you cross the bridge, the experience begins with an elegant welcome from beautifully attired hostesses at the hotel entrance. Sahn Eddar is located at the base of the hotel’s atrium (which, by the way is the world’s tallest atrium), at the top of the escalator, offering a perfect view of the white sand beaches and crystal blue waters of the Jumeirah coastline. Tea itself is a luxuriously unhurried affair of seven courses, and whilst this may sound daunting, each is so exquisitely prepared offering just enough that you do not feel overly indulged at the conclusion of the event. Three seatings are offered, 1pm, 3pm, and 5pm, and whilst we thought our 1pm reservation was a little strange for afternoon tea it

44 I Travel Arabia

was in fact perfect. It replaced lunch, and allowed us to indulge without feeling the slightest hint of guilt! Offering all the traditional components of selected teas and coffee, finger sandwiches, scones and clotted cream and pastries, The Sahn Eddar Ultimate Afternoon Tea delights with a light, palate-refreshing mixed berries and cream to commence the ceremony and a chef ’s carvery following the finger sandwiches. In our case this was a warm salmon en croute which was absolutely delicious. Your choice of unlimited accompanying beverage - sparkling date juice, which should be tried by everyone as it is extremely refreshing, or the branded sparkling beverage dictates the price, which ranges from AED 325 to AED 375 per person. Afternoon Tea at the Burj al Arab should definitely be on everyone’s calendar at some point during their visit to Dubai. Not only does it allow you a

glimpse of the world’s most luxurious hotel, but it is a delightful way to spend an afternoon with friends over a supremely elegant tea. Advance bookings are essential and can be made via the following: Telephone: +971 4 301 7600, Email: BAArestaurants@jumeirah.com

Singapore in Dubai

There’s more to it than meets the eye at Grand Hyatt Dubai’s Peppercrab

In Singapore, food is viewed as crucial to national individuality and a unifying cultural strand. Singaporean literature declares eating as a national pastime and food, a national obsession. In fact, food is a frequent topic of conversation among Singaporeans. At Grand Hyatt Dubai’s Peppercrab Restaurant you get a piece of Singapore— Singaporean food to be exact. Peppercrab is embedded in the lobby of this tropical themed hotel. Overlooking

46 I Travel Arabia

the hidden garden and water body, Peppercrab offers Singaporean cuisine which recently refreshed its menu. After dining I found out there actually was more to it than meets the eye. It was a whole new experience. Entering the restaurant, eyes are drawn towards the open kitchen, more particularly at the roasted ducks hanging right over the kitchen view. The restaurant is smoothly decorated, with nice and warm use of wooden ceilings and the warm colour scheme. Each table has its own specific lighting which gives a very pleasant effect while making it easier to the eyes. The culinary experience kicks off with the appetizers which consisted of Chicken Satay platter served with peanut sauce accompanied by roasted duck and pancakes. The assembling of the duck pancakes with shredded spring onions and cucumber makes it more fun to eat, while the sweet flavour tickles the tongue. While waiting for the food, it is pleasant to enjoy the events at the open

kitchen. One notices the wooden ceiling fans and the view of the garden—it catches the eyes now and then. For our main course, we ordered the national dish of Singapore, Chilli Crab, along with steamed fish with black bean sauce Singaporean rice and tiger shrimps. My first experience about having this delicious crab started with the tools and how to use them to remove the big hard shell on top. As I cracked open the shell, the juices flowed; the soft meat was tastefully inside. I dipped it with the curry and savoured the juicy flavour. I was startled when the waiter came up behind and put an apron on me. I had no idea what it was all about. Seeing the look on my face, it was explained to me by the polite waitress that it is essential to wear an apron while eating the crab. We spent most of our time and energy eating the crab served in a big bowl of curry. The stains on the aprons prove indeed it was delicious. The fish and the shrimp were also of very good quality in their own ways, though they were no match for the crab. We end the eating expedition with Jasmine Crème Brule and Ice kachang a very exotic Singaporean dessert. Ice kachang is a soft and relaxing dessert with fruits and sweet syrups, which is a perfect end note after a spicy dinner. A bit heavy on your wallet, but there isn’t any harm in experiencing the taste of Singapore right here in Grand Hyatt Dubai. On the whole it was an experience which cannot be described better then unforgettable. If you want an exploratory and scrumptious evening Peppercrab is a definite choice for you.

Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel gets five star rating Shopping has just become even more fun!

Located across from the popular BurJuman Shopping Mall and a metro rail transit station, Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai, your “base of operations” in the city, is now a five-star hotel. intensive assessment. The five-star plaque was presented to Mr. Scott Butcher, General Manager, Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel, Dubai. According to him, the five-star rating is a reflection of the high quality of facilities and services available at the 390-room Park Regis Kris Kin. “We are extremely pleased and truly appreciate the top industry honour. This achievement is a true testament of the hard work and dedication of our worldclass team that’s committed to providing a memorable experience to all our guests,”

Said Butcher. “Our guests know they are getting a five-star experience at an exceptional rate – and this is now reflected in our official designation as one of Dubai’s top accommodation options.” Hotel rankings are awarded by DTCM according to the facilities, scale, service quality and management. The process for accreditation is very precise and consistent and uses the same criteria for all hotels. There is only one unified star rating system in Dubai for hotels that the consumer can trust. The DTCM inspects each hotel that’s rated in the country in exactly the same way. So far there are only about 80 hotels in the city have this rating. Tranquil moments

Saray Spa at Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel In the heart of the Dubai Marina area sits the Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel, together with its closely guarded secret, the Saray Spa. I generally know my Dubai hotels, and spas, but even I had to check the map for the location and access to this one – nonetheless, it was certainly worth the effort. On the fifth floor with the health

54 I Travel Arabia

club and pool, Saray Spa boasts just six individual treatment rooms a compact pre-treatment area with showers, steam, sauna and Jacuzzi and an intimate post treatment relaxation area. Separate ladies and gents spa areas are provided. With Hammam, a variety of exotically named signature treatments plus facials and massages to select from, I opted for the signature body treatment – Milk and Honey Immersion. With visions of reclining in a tub of milk and honey, I was only slightly disappointed to discover this treatment actually consists of a gentle yet effective exfoliation with oatmeal and black seed oil to stimulate skin cells, followed by a warm massage of milk, honey and rose oil. Milk was first used as a rejuvenation ingredient nearly 5,000 years ago, reserved for only the wealthiest families in ancient Arabia. Combined, milk and honey’s natural enzymes promote a healthy glow and appearance – not to mention smelling fantastic. Having been accustomed to washing off the exfoliation residue prior to a massage, I was surprised to have the milk, honey and rose oil applied immediately after the exfoliation, without rinsing. The

effect however was very pleasing, combining the exfoliation with the milk, honey and rose oil was not at all abrasive and extremely relaxing. Then came the shower, followed by the third and final stage of the journey, a full body massage using hot stones dipped in rose oil. Never a fan of hot stones, either this experience was enhanced by the exfoliation and massage, the rose oil, or the skill of the therapist, but it was certainly a relaxing deep tissue massage that left me wishing for more. I was not disappointed with my choice of treatments, and would certainly return – probably to try something different like the deliciously sounding Spiced Pomegranate & Moroccan Yoghurt Detoxifier! Whichever treatment you select, make sure you arrive about 30 minutes before your appointment, with swimsuit, to relax in the steam, sauna and Jacuzzi, and you are guaranteed to leave feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Good for: soothing tight muscles after a strenuous gym workout. Milk and Honey Immersion Treatment 90 minutes/AED400 Contact +971 4 319 4630 Open daily 10 am – 9 pm

my first trip to Amsterdam and it was very pleasant. I went with my brother, so it was a good bonding process. My favorite artist is Van Gogh, so it was such a treat to visit the Van Gogh Museum. Chocolates and sweets are well known and the locally made ones are not to be missed. What is your dream destination? Tokyo, Japan. I am totally enchanted by the culture, technological progress and history.

Name three places in the world that you can’t wait to see. Vietnam. Kenya. The Amazon forests.

Does travelling alone appeal to you? I do not mind travelling alone as it can be very spiritual and a total self discovery process. It also means you are focused more on the city or area you are travelling to as there is more observing to do and less talking! But nevertheless I also very much enjoy travelling in a group of likeminded individuals. When was the last time you travelled? I’ve just unpacked my luggage coming back from Holland—Amsterdam. It was

64 I Travel Arabia

Name three of your favorite places you would love to return to and why. Italy because you can never get bored of Rome, it is magic and eternal, the food is excellent and Italians are fun, warm people. Thailand. I love water sports and massages! And they excel in both. I also enjoy Thai food very much and tropical fruits, Thai people are unpredictable and chaotic and there is a certain charm to that. New York. There is so much to do there. I love Broadway shows. The city has a lot to cover that it is impossible to see everything it has in one or two trips. Also, they say there are enough restaurants in New York such that if you would eat in each one for each meal of the day, you wouldn’t probably be back to those you’ve had a meal at in a life time because there would always be other restaurants to try!!!

Amazon forest

Some would immediately hit the pool or the spa or the bar, or the road with their camera. What about you? If I have access to a motorbike I would rent one and go around the city and discover alleys and more hidden areas. I love engaging with the locals to discover more than what is on the net. What excites you when travelling? Landscapes, food and the locals. What motivates you to travel? Food? Shopping? Sightseeing? Sightseeing and meeting the locals.

Brazil

Where to next? Brazil!
