Editor’s Note By now, you’d most probably be wondering why you’re holding this copy of Travel Arabia. Habibi dear, it’s your reason for being. In this edition, we take you across the land of enigma called Arabia and explore the different festivals that have been on its calendar “since ever since.” These festivals, deeply rooted in customs and traditions, offer clues to secrets buried in the sands. Like the Arabian wind, they reveal and hide, from time to time, the seeds that brought forth a civilization. We also feature Eid al-Adha getaways that offer options on how you and your family can spend the holidays. It’s a rundown of destinations—from Salalah in Oman to Koh Samui in Thailand, Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Masai Mara in Kenya. Indeed, you and your family may need to vote a decision on where to go.
Fadi Mansour, host of the Afternoon Show on Radio Two (99.3 & 106FM) who has traveled to 28 countries, shares his Travel Bag; and Julian Redman tells us all about France in Whistle Stop. Travel Treats features top picks of the month that ranges from a UK Christmas holiday to a tranquil spa experience at Chedi Muscat and lunch on top of the world at The Torch – Doha. Living Arabia comes back with an Oman diving trip. Read on.
Gill Shepherd, who has backpacked around the USA, Europe, Australasia and Latin America, shares a story about a trip she and her family recently had in Iceland in this edition’s Chronicles. They also traveled to Fiji and the Pacific coast of North America, exciting stories of which will be forthcoming.
Festivals across the Sahara and beyond offer clues to secrets buried in the sands. Perplexing? Not really.

Melting Pot Makeover Nice cover story Dear editor, Every jewelry has a story and, what can I say, your magazine got it all told in your splendid Cover Story section about Arabian gems. Sahara Arabian Experience
Land of fascinating festivals
Travel Arabia 19
Celebrations across the Sahara offer clues to secrets buried in the sands. Perplexing? Not really.
P
eoples of the vast arid land stretching from North Africa, the Mediterranean coast and on to the outskirts of the Atlantic, hold festivals that, perplexing, even bizarre as it may sound to the uninitiated, offer clues to secrets buried in the sands. This is the Sahara, after all. The land of enigma where the wind, like the festivals themselves, reveals and hides, from time to time, the roots that brought forth a civilization. From celebrations of Prophet Mohammad’s birth and tributes to the Nile, to a unique mass wedding in the highlands of the Atlas Mountains and merrymaking to welcome the rains, indeed, this subcontinent—the world’s largest peninsula—has more to it than meets the eye. Morocco’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ We first take you to Morocco where a tradition of festivals has gone back for centuries, the most interesting of which,
20 I Travel Arabia
perhaps, is the Imilchil Marriage Festival, held in Imilchil, a small town in the Atlas Mountains. Legend has it that two young people from different tribes fell in love, but were forbidden to see each other by their families. The grief led them to cry themselves to death, creating the neighbouring lakes of Isli (his) and Tislit (hers) near Imilchil. The families decided to establish a day on the anniversary of the lovers’ death - when members of local tribes could marry each other. Thus the Imilchil Marriage Festival was born. The region is a large scattering of tiny villages, and when young person needs to find a partner, they can’t simply go and look for one, due to the conservative social norms. Thus, the festival allows for fathers to show their daughters and find husbands for them. When a woman accepts a man’s proposal to marry, she says “You have captured my liver”. (Tq massa n uchemt) Up to 40 couples take their vows on the same day. The festival is rich
with music, dancing, feasts, and colorful clothing. Meanwhile, in June, the country celebrates the annual 10-day Fez Festival of World Sacred Music, which was started in 1994, and where renowned artists from around the world perform a variety of styles—from Moroccan Sufi chants, Pakistani qawwali incantations, and Egyptian madhi odes, to flamenco-style Christian saeta, ancient Indian gwalior chants, and Turkish whirling dervishes. Fez, the former capital, is an ancient city surrounded by hills where tombs of the Merinids, nomadic tribes which took Fez in 1244, remain in slumber. Fez was for many centuries the political and intellectual capital of Morocco. UAE’s bullfights and camel beauty pageants Yes. Bullfighting is not the sole domain of Spain and Portugal. In Fujairah, folks gather on Fridays to watch bulls charge head-on. While own-
ers ensure that their bulls do not get hurt and though there is no bloodshed, as in the traditional Spanish sport, the fear and humiliation that the animal goes through is plainly evident. The bulls lock horns fiercely, with the one that manages to force its opponent to back off being declared winner. There have been fights where one of the bulls just walk away after a brief fight. The winning animal—and its owner—gets bragging rights to the title, “Prized Bull.” In Abu Dhabi, camels take centerstage in an annual event called the Mazayina Dhafra Camel Festival and held in Zayed City in Al Gharbia. Thousands of camels from across the Gulf converge to this desert town for the occasion which fetches hefty cash prizes. Judges look for shiny hair, a long neck and a large and symmetrical hump. Camel beauty pageants were initiated 20 years ago, as cultivators began mixing species to breed faster camels for racing. Egypt’s Hapi The biggest Egyptian festival is dedicated to the Nile. Each year the Nile would begin to rise in June and eventually flood by July 19. For this reason, July 19
is the New Year on the ancient Egyptian calendar. There were huge celebrations honoring the rising of the river. To give thanks to what the ancient Egyptians referred to as a Nile god named Hapi, they would place a roll of papyrus containing a prayer on the Nile. They would also make offerings of fruits, vegetables, and flowers to show their appreciation for the Nile’s rising. Dancing and singing would take place all night long, and people would drink water from the Nile. The joyous occasion of the Nile’s rising in antiquity meant that fields of crops would be able to be irrigated all year round, and that the citizens of Egypt would have enough to eat. Grain was used as currency in ancient Egypt. Its abundance of grain is what inspired the Greeks and the Romans to eventually conquer it. Egypt’s famous fuul medammes dish, features a variety of fava bean which are known to be the world’s oldest agricultural crop. Date crops have been religiously significant for more than 5,000 years in Egypt.
monsoon in Oman’s Salalah. With rich vegetation flooding in this part of Oman, the month of July and August is embraced with a merry mood. This festival welcomes the fertile months through various cultural and traditional programs like dance and music. Arab horses and camels do take part in the carnival to add grandeur to the festival. This occasion is a major attraction to a lot of tourists, who throng to Salalah just to steal some cheerful moments. As in other Arab countries, camel races are held in Oman. It actually is a year-round festival among Omanis. Seeb is the centre for this spectacular sport event. In the interiors, the natives of Al Sinainah, under the governorate of Al Buraimi take a great pleasure in this game. The camels are specially trained by the Bedouins for this race. An event showcasing Omani culture and tradition is the annual Muscat Festival, which is held every January and celebrates traditional arts, heritage and culture. The programs are held all over Muscat.

distributed widely from home to home and to the general public. In some areas Muslims also exchange gifts. A Jordan fascination is the Amman International Theater Festival which was formed by a group of Jordanian artists in 1983. It was later known as Al-Fawanees Theater Group, where the word “Fawaness” means “Lanterns” in Arabic. Today, this annual theater festival is regarded as the biggest of its kind across the entire Middle East and in North Africa and has become a sought-after theater event in the Arab world. Held in April, the festival promotes native theater artists and their cultural heritage. The performances are rendered in English and Arabic.
tries. In Saudi Arabia, a camel race kicks off a two-week festival of culture and heritage called Al Jenadriyah. The event has repeated mentions in accounts by historians and writers as it was, in yonder times, called Rowdhat Souwais. During this event, date cakes, the Saudi national cake, are handed out to visitors. Local music highlights the activities. The festival, which is usually held in June or July, draws more than a million visitors every year. Also celebrated is the annual Jeddah Summer Festival which was started in 1998. The event is one of the most entertaining and fabulous of Saudi Arabia’s festivals. Jeddah with its old charm, modern skyscrapers and shopping centers, has grown to be a major tourist attraction. Fireworks on the Corniche front herald the beginning of this massive event. Circus, musical shows and Kids Theater are the main attractions. Cultural and sports events as well as art and entertainment activities are also held. Moreover, local handicrafts and traditional dishes are likewise offered to tourists. Jordan’s Rabee’ Awal Like other Islamic countries, Jordan, too, celebrates the birth of Prophet Muhammad. Rabee’ Awal refers to an entire month of religious festivities. This is one of the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar during which the Mawlid or the birth of Prophet Muhammad is celebrated. The dates are often changed according to the lunar calendar but usually, in Jordan, it

is celebrated around the end of March. The entire nation seems overpowered with a feasting frenzy. The local markets are adorned with fluorescent lighting and food stalls. This is also perhaps the best time to taste the native delicacies of Jordan. The celebration of the Mawlid is done differently depending on the country. In some areas celebrations begin as early as the first of the month and can continue till the end of the month. Muslims generally put coloured lights on roads streets and their homes and put green flags as well to celebrate. In many countries a procession is also conducted on 12th or 17th of Rabee’ Awal night and day. On these occasions sweets and drinks are also
Kuwait’s Spring blossoms It’s called Hala Festival Held in February just as the parched desert sands transform into a magical green carpet covered with blossoming, colourful flora, Hala coincides with Kuwait’s National and Liberation Days. The arrival of migratory birds and seasonal animals during this time adds further colour, elegance and beauty to the desert. Springtime is the tourist season in Kuwait when visitors are especially welcomed for month-long celebrations. Many activities and festivals are organized; special shopping offers and discounts, daily prizes, musical parties, variety shows, cultural activities and folk arts are held. In addition, local and international teams participate in sport activities. Bahrain’s year-round fests Populated by different nationalities and religions, Bahrain all throughout the year sees one festival or another being celebrated in pomp and grandeur. The Islamic New Year or Muharram is much-awaited. A complete ban on alcohol and other intoxicating substances are strictly imposed across the kingdom to observe purity. Christian New Year in the same month is also observed across Bahrain by the believers in Christianity. Big parties are thrown with people dancing to the tunes of music and alcohol is served as a part of this festivity. Milad al-Nabi is the most widely celebrated festival in Bahrain. This festival is celebrated as a birthday of Muhammad. Both the religious Islamic factions, that is, the Shi and the Sunni celebrate this festival however on different dates. The

It gets its name from the lucrative Chinese silk trade, which began during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 CE). Lebanon’s crossroad Cultural crossroad, that is. The Byblos International Festival is one of the biggest Lebanese festivals which attract thousands of tourists from all over the world
to the shores of Lebanon, to Byblos—the first city in Phoenicia founded around 5,000BC. The annual festival, held in June, was created in 2003 to promote tourism and the Lebanese culture spread music and art from the Middle East to the whole world. The festivals take place by the sea side in the historic quarter in front of the big castle built by the Crusaders in the 12th every year in July regrouping Lebanese and international artists. Tunisia’s Sahara Douz Once an original Bedouin marriage market, the Sahara Douz Festival, held annually for five days in December, is now a huge celebration, although it still retains an authentic feel. Aside from the market, there are camel and greyhound races and equestrian military exercises known as “fantasias”. The equestrian shows are particularly impressive. They involve a veritable swarm of riders cantering across the ground, turning abruptly and stopping in their tracks before shooting into the air. The very first festival, called the Camel Festival, began in 1910 when Tunisia was under French rule. In 1967 it took on its modern identity according to the will of Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia’s first president of the new republic, to become the country’s oldest and best-known festival. After the official opening ceremony, the main events take place in the H’naiech stadium in front of the desert surrounded by Bedouin tents.

With a coastline of 1,700 kilometers, the Sultanate – listed as the most-improved nation over the last 40 years from a 135-country survey conducted by the UN Development Program in 2010 – attracts visitors from around the world to its pristine beaches. The best months for diving in Oman are from April to July, although the pastime can be enjoyed all year round, and many divers choose the cooler months to explore the waters. The fish population is so varied that new species are still being discovered to this day. Lucky divers can spot more elusive denizens such as the whale shark, sunfish or sea horse. “We are amused whenever we see the perplexed faces of skeptical foreign divers who plunge into our waters for the first

Even the well-traveled admit that they did not expect Oman to be such an ecologically diverse and tourist-friendly destination. This ability to surprise is the pride and joy of Oman’s diving tourism,” said Salem Al Mamari, Director General of Tourism Promotions, the Sultanate of Oman’s Ministry of Tourism.
Corals thrive throughout Oman’s waters, with some of the common variants among the existing 85 genera of hard and soft corals being boulder coral, whip coral, stag-horn coral, orange cup coral and cabbage coral. There are endemic species of coral that only grow and reproduce in the waters here, due to the planktonrich environment. Although visibility can extend to 30 meters, the massive presence of plankton can occasionally limit visibility. The abundance and variety of species, however, more than make up for this. France! And so to Paris! A bustling city with a huge French essence despite many critics saying that like most capital cities it’s famous for having more foreigners in it than the indigenous population! —Julian Redman
“Bonjour!” “Viva La France!” “Oh la la!” And all those other passionate French sayings so commonly heard on the Champs Elysees! You can’t help but compliment the French on their patriotism and ardent approach to their nation; teeming with history and famous for so much including the origin of Champagne and Cognac, named so after their locations in France, and of course famous for arguably being the pioneers of wine making. But the French are also proud of their contribution to art (Monet and Degas),
34 I Travel Arabia
high fashion or, as we call it –and like the French do—“haute coulture” (Chanel, Dior and Givenchy) and sport (Rugby World Cup Winners and 6 Nations Champions Titles 16 times, Plus the Football World Cup Winners in 1998! Tour de France Cycling, the list goes on!). As I lived 22 miles from France growing up, I often visited Calais and Boulogne to enjoy an alternative culture, try to learn French (stress the “try”) with the locals and fill up the shopping trolley with Tax Free Goods (in fact I must have hit the northern French Coast a hundred times
as I worked on the Cross Channel Ferries in my school holidays!). So my memories of France go back a long way and I have to say France is a country that keeps giving— from the mountains north of Nice to the glorious marine village of Port Grimaud, you can be sure that this large country has a spot somewhere which will capture your heart, soul and imagination. And so to Paris! A bustling city with a huge French essence despite many critics saying that like most capital cities it’s famous for having more foreigners in it than the indigenous population! And I
can only tell you how I experienced it, and it was an exhausting but pleasant way to see this city, which was via foot. And it was a very, very long walk indeed. I wandered from Marble Arch to Notre Dame, passing Le Louvre (where the famous Mona Lisa hangs), and The Eiffel Tower (Le Tour Eiffel), from all accounts the most visited monument in the World. In between, one had to stop and soak up the Parisian atmosphere at one of the expensive coffee shops or bistros which were perched alongside the River Seine. Paris was a gorgeous city with plenty of sightseeing which made you realize the global influence of this country over the recent centuries. I think for most cities sometimes just walking around provides you with perspective and the “in between bits” that a tube, bus route or cab journey may miss. And so to Paris… (Sorry, I had to squeeze a Deju Vu joke in there somewhere didn’t I?) Ok, Nice, Cannes and Monte Carlo— three places synonymous for the rich and famous. However I didn’t get the chance to spend time long enough in these places other than to walk along the promenade, pass through the high streets and see the home of one of the most attractive F1 sites in the world, Monaco. I breezed through these whilst I was camping in the Castellane Region north of Cannes many years ago, but it felt like a place I would have to visit again, and the friends of mine who have been to Nice tell me it’s an absolute must go. However, I favoured the other end of the Cote d’Azur and spent a fantastic week on a yacht in Port Grimaud and St. Tropez. These two towns had a wonderfully international feel and were peppered with charming “yachties” (gentlemen sporting colourful polo shirts adorned with deck shoes as if they have just stepped off the good ship Le Napoleo). The place

had a warm and welcoming atmosphere, although the latter had a slightly higher “point of entry” with the restaurants and bars serving perhaps the more affluent end of the market. If you do get a chance to stay in or around St. Tropez, ensure you have some Euros spare for everything from a bottle of water (L’eau!) to a fivecourse gourmet dinner. France is a large country, but I think I have seen quite a lot having driven from north to south on my way to Portugal one year. We drove down “Le Route Nation-

ale” which although was seen a cheaper option than taking the Toll Road (I know, Salik is everywhere!), actually gave you a pleasant insight to everyday French Lifestyle. I don’t think you can truly say you’ve experienced France if you haven’t tasted an early morning Baguette from a Boulangerie and eaten an aptly named French pastry. There was one occasion however where my brother and I had to sit and eat chocolate ice cream for breakfast as my “hot chocolate in a big cup” was poorly executed and the French waiter clearly heard something else. But back to that particular journey: the relaxed atmosphere, the historic architecture and the lush green fields of

French Village
Western France through to the Loire Valley was a great road trip given the right circumstance. I was thinking soft top, romantic getaway drive, rather than mum, dad, 2 kids and a car packed full of luggage and toys. So for those who are contemplating “La France,” you have no excuse—with direct flights to Nice from Dubai and of course direct to Charles de Gaulle, Paris, France has to be on your radar despite the competition of more exotic options easily accessible from the Middle East. The French culture is simply unparalleled, charming, relaxed and sociable! Au Revoir for now and more importantly Bon Voyage for ever!!

Travellers' Tips
Luxury whispers Fairmont Bab Al Bahr is an ideal location from which to explore the beauty of bustling Abu Dhabi.
‘I enjoyed breakfast in a lounge which offered spectacular views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.’
36 I Travel Arabia
In a country where there are more hotels popping up than imaginable, I found myself utterly impressed when I experienced for the first time, in a very long time, a hotel team who actually asks their guests questions and listens. Fairmont Bab Al Bahr lies between the two bridges in Abu Dhabi. I was lucky enough to visit the capital of the United Arab Emirates as a guest at a private wedding celebration. I had heard great things about the property, which boasts 369 rooms so I decided it was time for a long weekend and promptly booked myself a two-night stay in a Fairmont Gold club room. My check-in at the Fairmont Gold lounge was seamless and friendly. I was running late for the wedding and I couldn’t have been happier that the staff instilled a sense of calm and ushered me to my room without delay. The door swung open to reveal a spacious and contemporary home away from home. But it wasn’t the décor or design that has remained in my mind post-trip, it was Tammy, the staff member who familiarised me with the room. Tammy could sense my anticipation about the wedding and that I was watching the clock. Instead of starting to explain things, she enquired “Madam, do you have time for me to explain the features of your room to you?”. As a well travelled person, I responded “No I’m in a bit of a rush and I think I can manage the TV and the lights.” Smiling, she said “I understand you are rushing for the wedding but I think I should show you how to work the coffee machine. You might need it in the morning.” I was blown away. A staff member who had a personality. Tammy had sensitivity but combined that with com-
mon sense and a polite sense of humour resulting in me not only writing about it but telling everyone who’ll sit still long enough to listen. Tammy listened to me. All too often hoteliers are pushing their ideas on guests when in fact all they need to do is ask a question and listen to the answer. My arrival experience set the tone for the entire stay, which was nothing short of amazing. I felt like a Sheikha everywhere I went. Nothing was too hard at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. The hotel features extensive meeting space, which let’s face it, I had no intention of utilising on this visit. However, food was an entirely different proposition. As a guest on the Fairmont Gold floors, I enjoyed a complimentary cooked breakfast in the 3,000 sq ft lounge which offered spectacular views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Each evening canapés and drinks were readily available. It is difficult to believe I even needed to visit a restaurant with all of the complimentary snacks at the lounge, but with eight outlets to choose from, how could I possibly resist. The hotel’s restaurant portfolio includes Elements the all day dining destination, Al Naba’a Lounge, situated in the heart of the hotel and Cedar Lebanese Restaurant and Lounge with a choice of indoor or alfresco seating. However, I humbly decided that Poolside was for me. I savoured mouth-watering Chicken Satays washed down with some French bubbles all while I soaked up the late afternoon sun paddling in the pool. I call it extravagance in a swimming costume. If poolside dining isn’t for you, at The Chocolate Gallery, one can watch as
chocolatiers craft delectable confectionery and for those who “like to see and to be seen”, Chameleon is the perfect venue to enjoy a wide selection of wines and cocktails in chic surroundings. ‘less is more’ A Travel Arabia one-on-one with The World at Her Feet, a women-only travel group, on the dos and don’ts of going to Bali. Your group has done many trips. Do you have any plans for these upcoming holidays? Why are your trips different from other “packages” available in the market? The World at Her Feet: Yes, we are planning to go to Bali these Eid holidays (3-9th Nov). We have partnered with Garuda Indonesia to give our members a deal inclusive of airfare. Besides catering to only women who have a flair for travel, our itineraries are very different from run- of-the-mill packages. Before presenting the destination and itinerary to our members, we ourselves think about it and always aim to give something different and unique to the travel experience. The full itinerary is on our website www.theworldatherfeet.com What do you suggest the ladies pack for the Bali trip? The World…: Our advice to our lady travelers has always been “less is more.” We request all our members while travelling with us to get one check in bag and one small cabin bag. A pair of jeans goes a long way. Because of its tropical climate, dress is generally quite informal in Bali. Accepted attire for ladies is dress, blouse, skirt or long trousers. Shorts and a tee-shirt are acceptable only in the well-defined tourist areas, hotel grounds and beaches, and may

draw unwanted attention elsewhere. It is not unheard of that local people may be offended or embarrassed at the sight of partly dressed tourists. A sarong makes an ideal wrap whenever a little more modesty is called for. When you visit a temple, you must be dressed appropriately - that means, you must be covered so modest clothing is necessary. A pair of strong and comfortable walking shoes is a must. Most roads are very rough, and there are few serviceable footpaths, except in the major cities. Travelling essentials:- umbrella/ sun screen/ moisturizer/swim wear/insect repellent. Any dos and don’ts for women travelers to Bali ? The World…: Do Use Sunscreen, if you are not used to the sun, don’t risk burning your skin by sunbathing for too long. Do Be Respectful towards the religious practices. The Balinese are highly respectful to their religion and ancestors. Do Cross the Roads Safely, this may sound funny but look both ways and keep your ears perked when you are crossing the road. Do Bargain to Half the Quoted Price. Do not bargain if you do not intend to buy the goods and if you really want to
buy, always bargain to at least half of the asking price. DON’Ts : Don’t Deal with Commissioned Money Changers. Be precise is our advice for this matter. There are 2 kinds of money changers; one with commission, one without commission. The one charging commission offers a higher rate, but the commission charge is taken off the total. The one without commission offers lower rates but no charges are taken off. Bring your own calculator (some of theirs are ‘fixed’) and double check the money before you leave 1. Never leave your very important stuff like passport, visa, money, and wallet in your hotel room. Entrust them to the safe box in the Front Office; 2. Never cross people’s path when they are conducting a traditional ceremony; 3. Do not touch or step on “sesajen” or holy offering, usually put around big trees, temples, etc; 4. Never take a picture of a priest conducting rituals 5. For women who have their periods, never enter holy places, especially temples; 6. Be respectful to cows since this animal is considered “sacred” in Balinese belief; 7. Never swear or shout rudely when something goes wrong;

Iceland: Fire, ice and much, much more Interesting stopover; fantastic final destination ‘It felt like another planet.’ Before I spent two weeks there with my family this summer, I didn’t know much about Iceland: an island in the North Atlantic; home to ash-spewing volcanoes with difficult names. But now that we’ve been there, I know that it’s well worth a visit, as a stopover or a destination in itself, because it is uniquely tourist-friendly and truly “foreign” at the same time. We booked flights ourselves and decided to extend the suggested 10-day, round-the-island, self-driving tour by three nights, but let local travel agents arrange everything else. Included in our package were a rental car, SATNAV and prepaid mobile phone, plus tickets for the busier attractions. Most importantly, the agents found accommodation for our family of five (children aged seven, nine and nine). This included a mix of apartments, adjoining hotel rooms, guesthous-

es, farm cottages and a pinewood cabin, all with breakfast included and well suited to our needs. After a comfortable night and wholesome breakfast in our three-bedroom apartment in the “House of Spirits,” we spent our first day exploring Reykjavik on foot, and adjusting to the cooler climate. Even some of the locals were wearing wooly hats, so we didn’t feel too bad buying knitted tights/pantyhose to act as thermal underwear for the outdoor activities on our itinerary. Iceland is approximately 25% bigger than the UAE (103,000 square kilometres), but has a population of just over 300,000, about the same as Al Ain, with most people living in the capital, and the rest around the coast. Consequently Reykjavik felt like a country town, not a capital city, and once we had our four-wheel drive rental car, most of our time was spent ex-
ploring this relatively uninhabited island. Iceland is known as the land of fire and ice. Glaciers cover over 11% of the country and because it straddles the mid-Atlantic ridge, you are never far from volcanoes and geothermal activity. The end result: a rugged landscape, dozens of voluminous waterfalls, and an almost prehistoric feel. Inland first, to Þingvellir. Here a 70-km wide rift valley has been created as North America and Europe are pushed away from each other, and Iceland grows, by two cms. every year. Then on to Geysir where the eponymous hot springs bubbled up “bad egg” smells and gushed boiling water 20 metres into the air; followed by Gullfoss, a cavernous waterfall which, by complete contrast, thundered and sprayed, chilly, glacial meltwater. Returning to the coast we visited the museum of the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. Then at low tide, we crossed wet sands to Cape Ingólfshöfði, to find Guillemots and Puffins. But most striking of all was the scenery: black sand for miles, broken only by sharp, grey rocks. The locals call it “The Desert,” but with this and our next stop, Jökulsárón, a glacial lagoon full of creaking, white, black and blue icebergs, it felt like another planet. And more alien scenery was to come when just a short hike from the road, we were overshadowed by towering masses of icy peaks, at the foot of one of the many “tongues” of Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull.

FAST FACTS Flights: From Dubai, fly via London, Heathrow (Emirates, British Airways, Virgin) and then on Icelandair to Reykjavik (twice daily). Free stopovers of up to 7 days can be made if flying with Icelandair via Reykjavik to the US or Canada. Visas: Although not a member of the EU, Schengen visas are available for travel to Iceland. Travel Agent: Nordic Visitor (www.nordicvisitor.com) arranged the accommodation, airport transfers, car rental and tickets for major tourist attractions. Weather: Iceland lies on the southern fringes of the Arctic Circle. Winters are long, dark and cold but are the best time to see the Northern lights and enjoy winter sports. In summer the sun never really sets but the temperature can fluctuate enormously so take clothes you can put on or take off in layers plus a wooly hat, scarf and waterproof jacket. Money: Exchange rates fluctuate but 1 AED is roughly IKr 30 or 1 US$ = Ikr 115 Time zone: GMT i.e. 4 hours behind the UAE, all year round.
Continuing our journey anti-clockwise, the landscape became more earthly again with a scenic drive through the eastern fjords. We then headed west across the north coast and enjoyed a long soak in the steaming, pale blue, milky waters of Lake Myvatn’s famous nature baths. Undoubtedly one of the highlights of our trip was whale watching in Húsavík. Weatherproof overalls, hats and mittens, were all provided and, although sightings can never be guaranteed, for almost 30 minutes, a humpback whale, waved its fins, slapped its tail and, just once, jumped

clean out of the water. Hot chocolate and pastries on board, followed by a visit to the village’s superb whale museum, were the perfect way to round off the day. As we completed our circuit of the island, the ever-changing scenery, waterfalls and colourful towns continued to please. More energetic pursuits such as kayaking, horse-riding, paddle boating and snowmobile tours were on offer throughout Iceland but we preferred to relax and just soak up the scenery. For example, on midsummer night (21st June), we had a beautiful pinewood cabin, Hestasport Hús, with its own outdoor “hotpot,” and cloudless skies. What better way to witness the midnight sun? Returning to the House of Spirits, we knew we’d found a country unlike any we had visited before: a land of fire and ice, freezing waterfalls and steaming hot pools, strange and stunning scenery, wonderful wildlife and no Starbucks, McDonalds or Pizza Huts, or at least none that we had seen. A truly “foreign” country!

Asiana Hotel, says its CEO, Gene Cha, is not only different from all other Deira hotels but from all other hotels in Dubai as well. “Guests will get to experience the true meaning of Asian hospitality when staying with us or enjoying a meal. They will all be treated warmly as is our nature. But most importantly, they will get to experience things that are not available in other parts of Dubai,” Cha tells Travel Arabia.

Asiana’s restaurant managers and chefs are from the country of the origin of the restaurant they are assigned to at the hotel. This, says Cha, “means we are providing the most traditional dining experience possible.” “We have some great chefs working at the hotel and from Japan, Korea, China, Thailand and the Philippines. So we are here to provide traditional (Asian) meals in all of our outlets,” he says. In the Japanese restaurant, Hanabi, are some traditional Tatami rooms which will make guests feel like they are sitting in a restaurant in Tokyo. Asiana has also brought the Philippines to Dubai with its Filipino restaurant, Lamesa (table) and the Boracay night club. Moreover, guests can also sit down and enjoy the traditional Korean grill section in Sonamu. With pine trees imported from Korea, guests can feel a very relaxed ambiance. On the rooftop, Asiana has a Pojangmacha, which is a Korean-style street food/ barbeque. “This is the first and only one in Dubai and you will get to taste the magnificent skewers and other barbequed food and drink the traditional Korean drinks in a relaxed atmosphere,” Cha says. “Asiana Hotel will always be bringing the freshest and finest food from all parts
of Asia and every time you come back to the hotel you will get to try something different and become enchanted by our property,” he adds. Cha says that with all restaurants now open in the hotel as well as the Spa, “we see a bright future ahead for Asiana Hotel. “We want to continue to get busier and busier and provide the best possible service to all of our guests.” Asiana Hotel is just 10 minutes away from the Dubai International Airport and a stone’s throw away from major shopping malls like Reef Mall, Al Ghurair City and Deira City Centre the famous Dubai Creek, the internationally renowned Gold Souk as well as golf clubs. CITY Living
Not all apartments are born equal Some have a silver spoon in their mouth And by that is meant the new class of city residences called apartment hotels, an alternative to hotel accommodation that have similar, if not totally the same, services and features of luxury that hotels have. Apartment hotels are residential complexes that use hotel-style booking systems where there are no fixed contracts and residents can leave whenever they want. In this age of online booking and fast-track living where more and more travelers—businessmen, young urban professionals, and families on a holiday— tend to prefer less costly accommodations like five star hotels, apartment hotels have become a lily in a placid pond; the

star of the morning show. As Travel Arabia has mentioned in past editions, apartment hotels were first created in holiday destinations as accommodation for families that needed to “live” in an apartment rather than “stay” as they would in a hotel. The apartments would provide a “holiday home” but generally be serviced. Later on these apartments evolved to be complete homes, allowing occupants to do everything they would at home, such as cleaning, washing and cooking. Apartment hotels are flexible types of accommodation; instead of the rigid format of a hotel room, an apartment hotel complex usually offers a complete fully fitted apartment. These complexes are

usually custom built, and similar to a hotel complex containing a varied amount of apartments. The length of stay in these apartment hotels is varied with anywhere from a few days to months or even years. The people that stay in apartment hotels use them as a home away from home, therefore they are usually fitted with everything the average home would require. Another attraction of apartment hotels is cost-effectiveness. Not only are rates often lower on average than hotel rooms, particularly for long term arrangements, but additional costs such as restaurant bills and beverage bills are considerably reduced because hotel apartments come with fully equipped kitchens allowing guests to prepare their own meals rather than being forced to go out to restaurants. Guests also have access to all the benefits that come with hotel stays such as laundry service, 24 hour security and a daily housekeeping service. And apartments that are part of a hotel complex mean guests get to enjoy 5-star privileges such as the health club, spa and restaurants – often with discounts for longterm residents. Serviced apartments have continued to grow in popularity, becoming increasingly in demand for families, particularly those from the GCC, because of the space and the security that these facilities provide.

Toro Toro
Stylish dining at Dubai Marina Described as a Pan Latin restaurant and lounge, the first of its kind in the UAE, Toro Toro (meaning Bull) features flavours from across South America including Brazil, Peru, Argentina and Colombia, and is the latest dining concept of celebrity chef Richard Sandoval. Combining a tapas style experience with more traditional Latin American fare, Toro Toro offers a unique dining experience. Knowing only that meat figures strongly in Latin American cuisine, we were expecting a heavy meal. However, diners are actually encouraged to share small plates of light tasty dishes with a variety of unfamiliar names in “From the Sea” and “From the Land” sections of the menu, and more familiar dishes “From the Garden”. Even more surprising was that my dinner companion, who is not a meat eater at all, found plenty of exciting sounding dishes to choose from, and raved about the Ceviche Nikkei – a blend of yellow fin tuna, sweet potato, ginger, cucumber and quinoa as well as the crispy calamari which was served with a very interesting sweet yet piquant sauce. The churassco is the highlight of the
48 I Travel Arabia
main courses, consisting of a sizzling hot plate of steak, lamb chops, sausage and chicken meant for two, but as only one of us eats meat, we selected the individual dishes of wagayu rib eye and the prawns with a side plate of sweet potato and salad. Cooked to perfection, both dishes were delicious, even if served without sauce. The churassco we saw served to other guests looked magnificent too, and everyone around us seemed quite content with their selections. Those with larger appetites than ourselves would be well recommended to order at least 3 appetisers each, and perhaps additional side dishes for the main course, but we were extremely happy with
the amount served and left comfortably sated. As for atmosphere, we found the decor masculine, but certainly not unappealing. The tables for two were very close together, which was a little disturbing as you were obliged to listen to the conversation on both sides, and we distinctly disliked the smoking that was permitted all around us. Never offered a “non smoking” table, this would be one reason for us to ensure we had an early reservation for future visits, eating before the restaurant becomes too crowded. Set on two floors overlooking the Marina, the ground floor of Toro Toro is dedicated to dining with a central open kitchen framed by a striking orange Onyx wall. Larger groups enjoy grand tables lined with high backed, animal motif-clad furnishings and walls decorated with dark wrought iron bars forming cosy dining areas. The upper floor is a lively elongated bar and lounge complete with a DJ playing modern South American music. Here comfortable seating encourages intimate groups, with additional bar stools from which to view the lively crowd. Both restaurant and bar were busy, even on a Monday night; this is clearly already a popular venue where reservations are required. Essential Information Toro Toro is located on the waterfront in Tower Two of the Grosvenor’s House Hotel, Dubai Marina. Open from 7:30pm to 2am and until 3am on Thursdays and Fridays. Reservations are highly expected: 04-3176000. Dress code is Stylish, and an age policy is in place – 21 and over. Expect to spend over AED 1,000 for two, including drinks. Recommendation Great for parties and groups
Chamas
A meat lover’s paradise ‘All meat portions have been marinated only with sea salt. The difference in taste comes from the meat itself.’ – Chef Guilherme Reis Have you ever had a day when you crave meat but couldn’t be bothered cooking it at home? Next time, head to Chamas. Situated in Intercontinental Hotel, Abu Dhabi, the interior of this Brazilian Churrascaria Restaurant & Bar is warm, inviting and visually appealing. The view outside is stunning with the restaurant directly overlooking the Marina. Once we made our selection from the rather impressive Brazilian-style salad bar, we headed to our favourite corner of the busy restaurant. And settled down for what we had come here for: the meat. The first visitor to roll up to our table was the drink tray with an assortment of fruits. As we chose our favourites, the friendly staff pestled them together to make each of us our unique concoction. There were no menu cards to make a choice from but communication with the staff was simple. As Passador meat carvers passed from table to table, slicing different cuts of beef and lamb from skewers, the cards on the table indicated our preference. Show them the green side and they will turn up at your table bearing endless skewers of freshly barbecued meat. Turn over the card to display the red side and they will leave you alone to enjoy what is already on your plate. And there was plenty on my plate. A sliver of marinated beef from the back of the neck, a slice from the flank, beef sausages, the ribs and a portion of the top sirloin or the lower portion of the ribs. There were also portions of the baby beef and Sirloin cubes.
I had saved my hunger for the Picanha and the Tri Tip though. The charred-onthe-outside but rosy, glistening pieces inside of the Picanha come from the centre of the bull’s rump. And the Tri Tip is a softer sliver carved out from the bottom portion of the Sirloin. “The concept is simple,” explained Chef Guilherme Reis. “All the meat portions have been marinated only with sea salt. The difference in taste comes from the meat itself. It is amazing how different meat parts, cooked in the same manner in the barbeque, can produce such different tastes.” There were more meat on offer. Lamb chops, lamb legs and lamb kofta got their way to your table along with chicken drumsticks and chicken wings. All this accompanied by a bowl of black beans, rice and the farofa, along with a spicy Brazilian vinaigrette. To clear our palate, hot pineapple was also sliced out from skewers from time to time. Once we had our fill of meat, it was time to choose the Sobremesas (dessert, the only Brazilian word I could pronounce) from a selection of pineapple carpaccio with Malibu sauce and bitter sweet chocolate mousse, Brazilian style flan, a pumpkin and nuts pie topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce, lemon meringue pie or a selection of fruits and ice cream. Stuffed and contented, as we headed home, we knew we would be back. Come winter, Chamas would be just the place to laze over a drink, succulent and sizzling meat and the company of friends.

An exceedingly enjoyable experience Friday Brunch is a Dubai Institution which no self-respecting hotel or restaurant in the city treats lightly. Each must carve its niche and stamp its personality on the market, and many have a dedicated following week after week. Generally described as “a meal combining breakfast and lunch, generally taken between 11 am and 3 pm”, the selection of food offered during Brunch ranges from breakfast staples of eggs, pancakes breads and pastries through appetisers, main courses and the very best desserts the chef can produce. Often accompanied by copious amounts of beverages, brunches are invariably priced with a soft drink or premium brand option.
As appealing venues for Friday Brunch go, The Address Downtown Dubai location has to rank in the Top 5: situated right next to The Dubai Mall, overlooking The Fountain and the Burj Khalifa, in the heart of Old Town, The Address Downtown Dubai is easy to get to, offers trouble-free valet parking, is elegant, has the largest shopping mall in the region right next door, and has a fantastic Friday Brunch as well. Sophisticated without being flashy, attracting a well dressed crowd without the overly pretentious set, offering a wide selection of cuisines without being overbearing, Friday Brunch at Fazaris was an exceedingly enjoyable experience. With a cosmopolitan blend of dishes

from an appetising presentation of fresh sushi, sashimi and other fishy delicacies on the Sushi bar, together with an impressive Seafood Station featuring lobster, crab, oysters and mussels, to dainty shotglasses and taster portions of exotic salad, soup and appetiser combinations, curries from Goa to the traditional ‘British roast’, Arabic specialities to colourful live pasta cooking stations, even the most fussy of diners would find ample fare from which to chose. Even the bread selection was
interesting, complete with pastries and other international breakfast offerings, and the blueberry pancakes were probably the lightest and fluffiest we have ever tasted! Always a favourite, the Chef ’s carving station served not only beef tenderloin, but lamb and duck as well. Complemented by roasted pumpkin and Dauphinoise potatoes, our ‘Sunday Lunch’ cravings were balanced by the exotic international dishes also available. Service was exceptional, possibly the best we have received in many months. Friendly yet professional waiters anticipating your every need, with managers seen attending to every table. The crowd was well balanced with families, couples and large tables of friends. A good buzz, without being rowdy and an enjoyable afternoon out. All in all, highly recommended. Cost: Brunch including soft drinks is AED 290 whilst that including unlimited premium branded beverages is AED 450. Time: 12:30pm to 4pm every Friday. Reservations: As Brunch is extremely popular advance reservations are recommended. On 04 436 8888 or via email dine.downtowndubai@theaddress.com Recommendation: Get up late on Friday, skip breakfast, and make it a day out in ‘Old Dubai’ starting with Brunch at The Address Downtown, followed by an afternoon shopping in the Dubai Mall! And don’t forget to book ahead.

Some would immediately hit the pool or the spa or the bar. Others would hit the road with their camera and digital recorders. What about you? I take a little time to discover the property where I’m staying at and its surroundings. Then I would rent a bike/car and go discover. What excites you when traveling? The preparation that comes before the trip in way of visas, hotel bookings, gathering info about the destination and the fact that many plans simply don’t materialize and we end up doing something completely different. The uncertainty of a new destination is always intriguing and exciting.
