EDITOR’S NOTE Ever been to Los Angeles, California? How about George Town in Penang? Boracay? Dubai? In this edition, we present insider stories on these bucket list destinations filed by our traveling writers sharing their accounts about places you shouldn’t miss in this lifetime. From the seat of Hollywood glamour, Marian Maraya Sierzant tells why Los Angeles, with attractions as diverse as its population, remains a prime destination for all things entertainment. Gemma Q. Casas, our Koh Samui-based writer, tells it as it is in George Town, a rustic city in Penang so filled with European architectural gems that walking on any street is like going to a museum, as she puts it. Kathleen Parcs tells us a story about Boracay, that tropical paradise in central Philippines “where the clear water ripples with the beat of the town alive with energy – day and night.” Cleopatra used pearls to seduce Marc Antony. Travel Arabia dives deeper to discover the wonder of pearls and how this ‘Mother of Gems’ is making a comeback in this part of the world. We also give you a quick crash course of sort, about Sharjah’s East Coast, which has that middle-of-nowhere feel with all the mix that an adventurous soul would crave: Khor Fakkan 101—Hike in the day, camp in the night. Check out our top Travel Treat choices this month where you can dine and shisha at the lowest point on Earth or dance with the penguins in Falklands. Go ahead, liberate yourselves. Read on, people.

Rising Star
Dear editor, Thanks for coming up with a lengthy article about my home place—Ras Al Khaimah—in your most recent edition. Indeed, Ras Al Khaimah, aptly described as the “Rising Star” of the UAE has plenty going for it. Ahmed Khan Ras Al Khaimah Dear Mr. Khan You’re most welcome. Editor

Old Dubai
Dear editor, I read your recent piece about how Dubai has evolved through the years from the days when the only means of transportation were donkeys and camels to today’s traffic snarls and Metro ride. I used to live in the Bur Dubai area myself, specifically near the Fahidi Fort. I have moved to Al Barsha but still visits Bur Dubai whenever I have the chance on a weekend. Thanks for a lovely piece about the place I consider my hometown in this part of the world. Dear Mr. Alcobar, Always a pleasure. You may want to share some old photographs that you have of the place. Editor
The Great Mosque of Córdoba
Dear editor, A picture tells a thousand words as they say and what better way to tell the story of The Great Mosque of Córdoba than by doing a photo spread as Travel Arabia did in its March 2013 edition. The structure is interesting not only for its architecture—it’s been regarded as one of the most inspiring monuments of the Renaissance—but as well because it is where two major religious beliefs meet. To share a bit of history, the magnificent structure begun at approximately 600 as a Christian church. Islam came and the church was divided between Muslims and Christians. Henceforth, the structure underwent changes to what it has now become. Today, the structure is a catholic Christian cathedral. Muslims across Spain have been lobbying the Roman Catholic Church to allow them to pray in the complex. Armando Ferios Barcelona, Spain Dear Mr. Ferios Thanks for the input on history. A little, and not-sopleasant, side note to this however was an incident in 2010 where security guards reportedly tried to prevent a group of Muslims from kneeling down to say a prayer, causing a fist fight. Pearls The ‘Mother of Gems’ is as much an Arabian icon as the pyramids
Bahrain, the centre of global pearl trade until Japan invented the cultured variety, is seeking to revive its homegrown industry with the help of—can you make a guess?—yes, the Japanese. By Jagan Nath Dass
T
he Koran describes Jannah, the paradise, as having pavilions made of pearls. Cleopatra used pearls to seduce Marc Antony. Roman Emperor Caligula, who wore slippers covered with pearls, adorned his favorite horse, Incitatus, with a pearl necklace. In 1969, actor Richard Burton bought the Peregrina Pearl, one of the most famous pearls in the world, which weighed 11.2 grams and perfectly shaped like a pear, for Elizabeth Taylor. To date, Taylor owns this 500-year-old jewel found by an African slave at Pearl Islands in the Gulf of Panama, and which had transferred hands among European kings and queens over time. Pearls, adored for their iridescence, exotic beauty and allure, were the most treasured gem until the 19th century when they were replaced
by diamonds. This was partly because unlike other jewels, pearls come from the shell ready to sell, not requiring any cutting or smelting, a huge plus factor during ancient days when people didn’t have the technology to process precious stones and metals. Historians and gemologists trace the pearl’s origins to Bahrain, which for ages, had a thriving pearl industry that however became moribund after a son of a noodle vendor in central Japan developed a technique to culture pearls at the turn of the century. Recent developments have however turned the tide once again in favour of Bahrain and other pearl-producing countries in the Gulf like the United Arab Emirates, as the Japanese cultured pearl industry suffers from misfortunes including an oyster disease in the late 1990s that has been linked to global warming. Travel Arabia 25
520 B.C., archeological evidence suggests that Persians were the first to appreciate the excellence of pearls and mother of pearl shells called “sadaf.” Ancient Middle Eastern cultures appreciated healing powers in pearls and ground them into powder to cure anything from heart disease to epilepsy and from indigestion and fever to eye diseases and bleeding. In Islamic thought, pearls symbolize perfection and completeness of the soul, richly rewarded in paradise. The Middle Eastern affection for the pearl is enshrined in the Koran’s description of paradise where: “The stones are pearls and jacinths; the fruits of the trees are pearls and emeralds; and each person admitted to the delights of the celestial kingdom is provided with a tent of pearls, jacinths, and emeralds; is crowned with pearls of incomparable luster, and is attended by beautiful maidens resembling hidden pearls.” In Egypt, decorative mother-of-pearl was used at least as far back as 4200 B.C. However, their use as personal adornments has been related to the Persian conquest in the fifth century B.C.
Moreover, China has caught on with its freshwater pearl production, dealing a blow to the Japanese, who were also facing problems caused by the rising value of the yen and a drop in demand due to the economic crisis in 2008 and 2009, plus the notion among the young that pearls are not anymore hip. In light of this, the Crown Prince of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, recently led an entourage to Japan which resulted to the signing in March this year of an agreement with three Japanese entities to 26 Travel Arabia
revitalize Bahrain’s pearl industry. Bahrain pearl Historically, the world’s best known pearls came from the pristine waters of the Persian Gulf, close to what is now known as Bahrain. The world’s finest collections of pearls typically came from the Black-lipped Pearl Oyster and belonged to the royal families of Persia, India and Ceylon. Due to the discovery of a pearl necklace in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess from
Ibn Batuta Famed American mineralogist George Frederick Kunz and colleague Charles Hugh Stevenson in “The Book of the Pearl” published in 1908 in New York also point to Bahrain as where it all started. They noted, following extensive research, that Ptolemy spoke of the pearl fisheries which existed from time immemorial at Tylos, the Roman name for the present-day Bahrain. The Arabian traveler, Ibn Batuta, wrote of the pearl-hunting activities in the area around 1336. In 1508 his writings were noted in the account of Italian traveler Lodovico Barthema’s expedition to the Island of Ormus. According to Batuta: “There were certain fishermen who go there in small boats and cast into the water two large stones attached to ropes, one at the bow, the other at the stern of each boat to keep it in place. “Then one of the fishermen would hang a sack from his neck, attach a large stone to his feet, and descend to the bottom--about fifteen paces under water, where he would remain as long as he can, searching for oysters which bore pearls, and put as many as he could find into his sack. “When he could remain underwater no longer, he would cast off the stone attached to his feet, and ascend by one of the ropes fastened to the boat. There were so many connected with the business that you would often see 300 of these little boats which came from many countries.” Tavernier Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, French diamond merchant and traveller known for his adventures throughout Persia also noted a pearl fishery around Bahrain that belonged to the king of Persia. He wrote, “There is a good fortress there in Bahrain, where a garrison of 300 men is kept.
When the Portuguese held Ormus (Hormuz) and Muscat, each boat which went to fish was obliged to take out a license from them, which cost fifteen abassis ($5.45), and many brigantines were maintained there in Bahrain, to sink those who were unwilling to take out licenses. “But since the Arabs have retaken Muscat and the Portuguese are no longer supreme in the Gulf, everyone who fishes in Bahrain pays to the King of Persia only five abassis, whether his fishing is successful or not. The merchant in Bahrain also pays the king something small for every 1,000 oysters.” Throughout the 18th century the Persian Gulf was almost the only important source of supply for pearls In 1838, Lt. J. R. Wellsted, an officer in the British India service, reported that the fisheries of the Gulf employed 4,300 boats manned by approximately 30,000 men. Of these boats, 3,500 were from Bahrain, 100 from the Persian coast, and the remaining 700 from the “Pirate Coast” situated between Bahrain and the entrance to the Gulf of Oman. Wellsted pegged the value of the pearls secured annually as approximately 400,000 British pounds. Twenty-seven years later, Sir Lewis Pelly, who was in the Indian service from 1851 to 1877, reported that there were 1,500 boats at Bahrain, and the annual return from the whole fishery was 400,000 British pounds, the same as previously reported by Wellsted.
In 1879, the value of the output in Bahrain was estimated at 600,000 British pounds by the British Resident, Col. Ross, and at 800,000 British pounds by Captain L.E. Durand of the British Protectorate of the Persian Gulf. Owing to the increased market value, the average output has amounted to approximately four million dollars annually. This refers to the local value only, which is greatly increased by the time the pearls leave the markets in Bombay and Baghdad. UAE In the UAE meantime, the ancient pearling industry provided the only real income for the people through a barter system. A few families would leave the nomadic desert lifestyle and settle on the coast to fish. Some of the fishermen probably found the occasional pearl when wading in the shallows, and kept it until there was an opportunity to barter it. To gather enough oysters for a living, however, required a huge communal effort, as well as people who were able to dive to depths of around 40 metres without equipment, to access the offshore oyster beds. As demand for pearls grew, pearl hunting became a major part of local life more families settling permanently in the coastal villages, which began to grow in importance and influence, particularly Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Merchants would provide the capital to provide and equip a boat for the diving season,
in return for a majority share of the profit accumulated from the sale of the pearls. The rest of the profit was distributed between the captain (nakhutha) and the crew. Pearling offered the possibility of comparative riches if one was lucky enough to be on a boat that discovered a top quality pearl or two. There is evidence of a single pearl being sold for fifteen thousand pounds (sterling) during the 1920s - equivalent to more than three hundred and fifty thousand pounds today. By the 1920s, Dubai’s pearl industry has developed to become as busy as that of Bahrain’s, according to British government documents, which described the activities as that of merriment: “Until they clear the harbour the boats are propelled by heavy oars, each pulled by two men, who sing the song of the pearlers as they row. Often the fleet returns at night when the moon and the tide are full. The sound of the sailors chanting and the splash of the oars is carried across the still water to the town. The sight of hundreds of white sails, some of them coloured orange by the light of the fires burning on the decks, is one of the most picturesque in the world.” Although the pearling industry offered potential wealth, it was also very dangerous for the divers, both physically and financially. In order to provide for their families over the months they were at sea, most would take advances from the owner of the boat. If their seasonal catch was not enough to cover their advances, they were in the

owner’s debt at the start of the next season, when they would have to get another advance. One bad diving season could lead to a lifetime of debt for the divers. A good season, on the other hand, could provide the means to acquire land in an oasis such as Al Ain and the luxury of a date garden. Japan In the early 1930s, the worldwide economic depression and the Japanese discovery of the cultured pearl cast a gloomy spell for the Gulf ’s pearling industry and the economy, one that caused the industry to become moribund for years until the discovery of oil in the last 1930s. Kokichi Mikimoto, (1858-1954), son of a noodle vendor, patented the world’s first cultured round pearl and developed a method for producing “blister,” or half pearls, and parlayed his patents into a massive fortune. It was reported that during his peak, Mikimoto owned 12 million oysters producing 75 percent of the world’s pearl supply. At the height of the cultured pearl industry in Japan, it was not unusual for a pearl cultivator to own 14 cars and walk around with the yen’s equivalent of $10,000 in cash stuffed in his pocket, according to reports. In 1899, the first Mikimoto pearl shop opened in the fashionable Ginza district of Tokyo, selling natural seed pearls and half round pearls. The Mikimoto business expanded internationally, opening stores in London in 1913. Indeed, the new technology enabled Japan’s cultured pearl industry to quickly expand after 1916 such that by 1935 there were 350 pearl farms in the country producing 10 million cul-

tured pearls annually. After World War II Mikimoto opened shops in Paris, New York, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Shanghai and Bombay. It became one of the first Japanese brands to attain an international recognition. Misfortunes Misfortunes would however set the Japanese pearl industry back years later in the 1990s with an oyster disease that hit Ehime Prefecture on the eastern shore of Shikoku the worst. The prefecture was the source of up to 80 percent of the pearl oysters shipped all over the Japan. According to the Japanese government, between 60 percent and 70 percent of all pearl oysters in the country died in 1996 and 1997. Officials attributed the matter to higher water temperatures that may be caused by global warming. They also did not discount the possibility that it also may have been brought from China by cultivators trying to improve their breeding stocks. The oyster death rate has been reduced to 20 percent in the 2000s, but by that time 15 percent of pearl cultivators and 23 percent of breeders had gone out of business. According to a Reuters news report, domestic production of cultured pearls hit a high of 88.5 billion yen ($900 million) in 1990; the figure, the news agency said, went down to a fifth of that by 2009. Agreement In March this year, Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company, the investment arm of the Kingdom of Bahrain, signed a Memorandum
of Understanding with three entities in Japan to promote and revitalise Bahrain’s pearl industry. The agreement was signed after a visit to Japan by an entourage of Bahraini government officials led by the Crown Prince Salman Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, who also the First Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Economic Development Board. Kinoshita Pearl Co., Ltd., a company specializing in natural and cultured pearls; First Stem Cell Japan Co., Ltd., a biotechnology research company; and Japan International Cooperation Center JICE were signatories to the agreement. By virtue of the accord, Kinoshita Pearl and First Stem Cell will provide advanced new technologies and methods to determine the existence, quality and maturity of pearls in Bahrain. Mahmood Hashim Al Kooheji, Mumtalakat CEO said Bahrain will actively be developing new projects with the companies. “For many years, the pearl industry was an important mainstay of our economy and we believe that there is potential to revitalise this industry,” he said. Kooheji indicated this projects will be located in Muharraq City where UNESCO has classified three offshore oyster beds as world heritage sites. “Japan and Bahrain share this legacy with the Japanese pearl industry being one of the most advanced globally. In an effort to support the regeneration of this historic industry, we must embrace new methods and technologies. As the partner of choice for international companies and investors, we look forward to cooperating with Kinoshita Pearl, First Stem Cell and JICE to further develop the pearl industry in Bahrain,” Kooheji said.

noted in his academic journal published in 1996, that pottery excavated from the city “suggests a possible trade with the classical world in which the earliest settled community on Zanzibar may have participated.” “Archaeologist Mortimer Wheeler famously tied together the worlds of ancient Rome and ancient India by finding Roman ceramics stratified into levels at Arikamedu, south India. Late Roman pottery from far down the East African coast now permits the same kind of matching link from the Mediterranean to a distant shore, this one in the Swahili world (of Zanzibar),” Juma wrote. Traders from Arabia, the Persian Gulf region of modern-day Iran, and west India visited Zanzibar as early as the first century, using the monsoon winds to sail across the Indian Ocean and land at the sheltered harbor located on the site of present-day Zanzibar City, scholars said. The world was still asleep in the dark recesses of the Middle Ages but not Zanzibar, which at the time, was already up-and-about with businessmen from all over, trading spices, ivory and slaves from the vast African interior. Since the first expeditions, wooden dhow boats were used for trade, at first from the Arabian Peninsula through the Indian Ocean, and then from even more distant countries like the United States which established a consulate in the city in 1837.

anzibar brings four thoughts to mind: Ancient pottery which links the city to global trade dating back to the 24th century BC; slave trade which flourished in the Middle Ages as a result of merchants coming to the place to do business and take indentured labor with them; Scheherazade, whose haunts of the city where in her 1001 Arabian Nights; and Freddie Mercury, the rock band, Queen’s front man who was born and raised in Stone Town—the original part of the city. According to scholars, ancient pottery unearthed implies that there had been trade routes with Zanzibar as far back as the time of the Assyrians of Mesopotamia who established vast empires across the Mediterranean and Africa. Abdurahman M. Juma, one of the scholars,
Roots Zanzibar, famous for its endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey, also conjures images of slaves huddled together with chains to their necks, boarding wooden ships for an unknown land, similar to Alex Hailey’s 1976 New York Times Best Seller, “Roots: The Saga of an American Family”, a novel about an 18th-century African captured and sold into slavery in the United States. Historians note that Zanzibar, being East Africa’s main slave-trading port, had as many as 50,000 slaves sold in the 19th century. Slave trade finally ended around 1876 following a series of agreements between the British and local leaders, the first of which was signed in 1822. Stone Town Zanzibar, which has a year-long cool weather with the coldest months being July and August at a daytime average of 29°C, has the original part of the city among its major attraction: Stone Town or Mji Mkongwe, which is Swahili for “old town”. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, Stone Town, birth place of 70s rock icon, Freddie Mercury, is famous for its architecture—remnants of the city’s colorful past with its mixture of Arab, Indian, Persian and European elements fused with the indigenous Swahili culture. What probably is very much Mediterranean about Stone Town is its labyrinth of alleys too narrow for cars and fit only for bicycles and

motorbikes that one can hop on to enjoy scenes of the houses, bazaars and mosques lined up on the sides. As Marrakech is known as the “Ochre City” because of the rose-red Terra cotta clay-based ceramic used to build houses for a burnt sienna hue, Stone Town derived its name from a coral stone largely used as main construction material thus giving the entire place its reddish colour. Scheherazade Stone Town is Zanzibar’s first village and was where traders settled following a long voyage across the Indian Ocean to then prepare their caravan for a business expedition into the African interior all the way up Central Africa and the Congo River. Scheherazade, storyteller of Arabian Nights, is also believed to have hailed from Stone City, where she holds a strong place in its history, and from where some of her anecdotes were derived. Scheherazade was a beautiful lady who had the misfortune of having to be married to a sultan whose ill-fated experience with his first wife had caused him to slay his succeeding wives after honeymoon lest they give him reason to forego the murder for the next evening. Scheherazade gave the sultan one reason—i.e. one story—a night. Freddie Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara on Sept. 5, 1946 was the son of a Parsee couple from India. He went to a school run by British nuns in Zanzibar. In 1964, the Bulsara family fled the Zanzibar revolution and moved to England.

ou’ve probably never heard of Khor Fakkan all your life—shame. Here’s a quick crash course of sort, anyway. The “Creek of the Two Jaws,” as what the place’s name means, is a Sharjah town some 25 kilometres from Fujairah’s centre. It is some 137 kilometers and two hours’ drive away from Sharjah itself. The place is called “Creek of the Two Jaws” because it is set in a splendid bay flanked by two headlands.
Khor Fakkan is believed to have been a Portuguese outpost around the 16th century with two forts—one on the northern side, the other on a hill by the southern side. These structures, which are now ruins, offer excellent stopovers for history buffs wanting to be at the sight of an invasion by the Persian navy which overran the forts around 1623, and the subsequent conflicts that ensued culminating in another Persian invasion around 1737. Aside from the fort ruins, Khor Fakkan has a picturesque isolated beach that few people know about: Heart Beach, a place where the closest you can get to a direction is an image scrawled on a hillside above it. Heart Beach is some 15 minutes’ hike from a last-chance petrol station by a roundabout at the northern end of Khor Fakkan Beach near Oceanic Hotel. Behind the station are steps that go over the hill. No pain, no gain, so walk and you’ll be rewarded with, and as one traveller who’d been there described it, pure, uninterrupted heaven, an idyllic, quiet, unspoiled
beach where the sand is soft and white. The blue water of the Arabian Sea, the magnificent underwater life and corals make Khor Fakkan breathtakingly irresistible. Situated on Sharjah’s East Coast, which runs along the Gulf of Oman, Khor Fakkan is scenic with the spectacularly rugged Hajar Mountains rising to 1,000 meters, crisscrossed by deep wadis, or small water basins. The beautiful, sun soaked, sandy beaches and the clear blue sea of the Gulf of Oman make this coast a haven for diving, fishing or just relaxing. The Khor Fakkan waters are full of kingfish, tuna, barracuda, red snapper, and hammour. Fishing enthusiasts can just pick their spot and wait patiently for the nibble. The warm and shallow waters of Khor Fakkan around the Sharque Island and Snoopy Island opposite the Sandy Beach Motel provide excellent opportunities for snorkeling, as well. Due to the variety of marine and coral life found in warm and relatively unpolluted waters of the East Coast, diving is a very popular sport

Boracay has grown itself into a destination catering to each tourist for a memorable beach holiday. Located in the island of Panay in Central Philippines, it stretches out to seven kilometers long with the narrowest point being a kilometer wide. Its azure waters hosts several marine sports and activities such as parasailing, jet skiing, snorkeling, canoeing, sail boating, kayaking, board sailing, and boat tours. If you also feel like separating yourself from the crowd Travel Arabia 41
in White Beach, Puka Beach is located at the northern part of the island, where crumbled puka shells make up the sand giving it coarse feeling on one’s feet – a contrast to the talcum powder feel-like sand in White Beach. After having much fun in the water, you can opt to go to the basics with nature and enjoy eco-adventures that surround the island. Visit bat caves and butterfly gardens, go horseback riding, trek Mount Luho and take in the view of Boracay Island from its deck or take a day trip to Ariel’s Point and feel the adrenalin rush as you jump off a cliff from any of it five platforms. When the sun sets on this island, Boracay provides for a cornucopia of activities. Happy hour starts mostly from 5pm through 7pm. Immerse yourself in live and vibrant music throughout the island strip where you will find bars and clubs with nightly performers for some dancing, or watch fire dancers perform while you enjoy your cocktails by the beach. You may also want to try some sishas. Simply put, Boracay gives you endless options to enjoy your beach holiday. It all depends on how you want to tell your Boracay story. This tropical paradise can nestle you with its calming nature and take all your stress away or it can keep you on your toes with the life the town has created.

The Walk
You missed Dubai if you weren’t here
This 1.7-kilometre long beachside strip is where the city—and much of the Gulf region—gravitate to for a leisurely stroll, a dineout and idle time on the sand by the sea. 46 Travel Arabia
The Walk, Dubai’s most popular food and shopping venue, is where the action is. You haven’t really been to Dubai if you did not go there during your stay in the city. The 1.7-kilometre-long shopping promenade has over 300 retailers— with top brands ranging from European fashion giant Zadig et Voltaire, Saks Fifth Avenue to Aiyanna of London. Also lining up the strip back-to-back are restaurants like Wagamama, famous for its yakesoba Japanese noodles, Stephano’s, Chilis, Coco’s, Da Shi Dai, Fashion Lounge, and Zaatar w Zeit, and more. Indeed, a weekend may not be enough to try all the eateries that abound. One of the best things about The Walk is having the world on your plate, so to speak, as the restaurants
offer various cuisines from all over the globe. You may fancy Italian tonight then go for an all-American hamburger tomorrow, a sushi or teriyaki perhaps for the next meal, or anything Chinese, Lebanese, Indian, you name it. The shishas are good, too. Shopping? It’s shopping galore on the strip! The Walk is best to experience soon as summer is gone and humidity drops for a perfect al fresco dining experience. It complements what is also popularly known as the Jumeirah Beach Residence, the largest single-phase residential development in the world with 40 towers—35 residential and five brand hotels. JBR has apartments, studios and penthouses making it the Gulf ’s New York. It opened in August 2008.

A
trip to George Town, Penang, Malaysia is like going back to a bygone colonial era; you get yourself in a place that seems to cast a spell on
you. This rustic city is filled with European architectural gems that walking on any street is like going to a museum. The only difference is that the structures have blended beautifully with modernity and the conveniences that come with it. The capital of the state of Penang, George
Town is rich in history, has beautiful white sandy beaches, is teeming with shopping centers and has an interesting mix of all races that makes up for a fusion of cultures. George Town is perfect for a quick stopover because it has everything—the beach, shopping, historical sites, ethnic food and more—which you can experience within a day or two. But it’s certainly worth the time if you can stay for a couple of days or more. Named after Britain’s King George III, George Town has undergone transformations
through many periods of colonialism since British trader Francis Light founded the place in 1786. Its influence from different settlers like British, Armenians, Chinese, Muslims, Indians, Malays and Japanese, among others, are still very much apparent in the inner part of the city, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Today, vibrant George Town has an estimated 700,000 residents, about 90 percent of whom are of Chinese, Malay or Indiandescent. glimpse of this city that Yahoo! once declared as one of the top 10 destinations to see before one dies—in other words, a bucket list destination. From Koh Samui, Thailand, George Town can be reached via a mini bus or a plane, depending on your budget. Most travelers, however, end up in Lebuh Chulia—a long street lined with budget accommodations not so distant from the fancier, big hotels. Hotels and hostels usually offer day trips to different sites around George Town. But exploring while walking can also be done effortlessly as most tourist sites are clustered together and the people are friendly enough to
answer queries for directions. For instance, from Lebuh Chulia, one could see some of the most treasured gems of the city like the Penang State Museum which was almost destroyed during World War II; the 1855 Teochew Temple which is a living testament to the classic Teochew architecture; the Moghul architecture-designed Kapitan Keling Mosque built in 1801; the Goddess of Mercy Temple built in 1728 and completed in 1800; the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia, the St. George Church built between 1817 to 1818; and other sites. This place is a must-see for travelers looking for exotic taste and finds for a fraction of a cost minus the hassle typically found in an Indian market. A quick bus ride to Komtar from the clustered temples and other historical sites near Lebuh Chulia leads to different shopping centers. Then, there’s the Penang Hill where one can view the city 830 feet above sea level; the Penang Butterfly Garden; the Penang Bird Park, and more. One can see and get a taste of the tiny and rustic George Town within just a few hours. Yet, it will definitely leave you with unforgettable memories, you’d want to come back and maybe stay not just for hours but days.

Taste of Dubai Three days of music, food and fun –the city gets a needed weekend respite 52 Travel Arabia
This year’s 6th edition of Taste of Dubai, held March 14-16, had a huge turnout with the Dubai Media City Amphitheatre, the venue, filled to the rafters from day one. The exciting and much-awaited event drew visitors and Dubai residents alike who came with families, some even tagging along babies in wheeled carriages as well. There was a total of 30 participating restaurants brought together to “reflect the current dining scene, while still representing Dubai favourites,” as organizers aptly put it. Regular crowd favorites Richard Sandoval and Giorgio Locatelli were present, with debuts by Armani/Amal, Armani/Ristorante, Asado and Thiptara. There were also appearances from new restaurants like Frevo from Fairmont The Palm, Izakaya, Prime 68 and Rang Mahal from JW Marriott Marquis, and Fogo Vivo from Ocean View Hotel. Taste of Dubai is patterned after tourism activities in various destinations around the world where food, music and entertainment are key elements for a lazy weekend break. Taste of Dubai was first held in 2008, with 12 restaurants participating, including Rhodes Mezzanine and Indego by Vineet.

Los Angeles:
Landmarks and local haunts
An insider’s guide to the seat of Hollywood glamour By Marian Maraya Sierzant
W
ith attractions as diverse as its population, the city of Los Angeles remains a prime destination for all things entertainment. There’s more than enough room in this throbbing town to explore popular or esoteric tastes catering to every mood and demographic. If this is your maiden L.A. voyage, don’t skip out on the standards: the Hollywood Sign, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, Dolby Theatre, Rodeo Drive, Capitol Records building, Disney Concert Hall, and L.A. Live. As the seat of Hollywood glamour, this is the city where celebrities work, and play and if you’re lucky, you might catch them doing both at red carpet shindigs all over tinseltown especially during awards season at around January to March (SAG Awards, Grammys, Golden Globes, Oscars). 54 Travel Arabia
While snagging invites to industry parties may not come easy, there are certain locales celebrities frequent if you’re one for stargazing. When it’s time to break bread, it’s no secret that The Ivy on Robertson Blvd has a steady stream of celebrity clientele. So does Mr Chow in Beverly Hills (where ordering off menu is the rule rather than the exception). But if you prefer seeing celebrities in a more relaxed atmosphere, mosey on over to the Larchmont Village where you may spot the occasional actor/actress/musician/reality star for that allimportant coffee run or fro-yo fix. But there is ever only one place in L.A. to clap eyes on real stars, and that would definitely be the Griffith Observatory, a public astronomy hub where the mysteries of the solar system can be viewed through the Zeiss planetarium projector. If you crave a bit more of culture with your
L.A. experience, do not miss LACMA, the Getty Center and the Getty Villa, with its revolving exhibits. Keeping young children (and adults) entertained when you are in the City of Angels is very easily accomplished. You would need to devote an entire day or two at Universal Studios Hollywood and/or Disneyland / California Adventure parks. A fan of live shows? You’ll get treated to one right where you stand in many corners of the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica as street performers or, shall we say, the next contenders of American Idol or America’s Got Talent deliver crowd-stopping shows. The iconic Pantages Theatre (Hollywood) will never steer you wrong when it comes to world-class live entertainment. In any given season, the Pantages runs enchanting musicals that showcase Broadway at its best.
‘There’s a little something for everyone in the City of Angels. Sticking to a priority list of must-sees may lessen the stress of last-minute decision-making. But don’t plan too hard —after all, spontaneity is often what makes a holiday.’ The bar scene in L.A. is, of course, hopping with many possibilities. Trendy hotspots like the Dresden (of Swingers fame) is always a hoot for its celebrity-driven past and present. But if you are in the mood to be somewhere with more of a local flair, drinks over at the Father’s Office (Helms Bakery, Culver City) can just as easily quench the thirst. You’re introduction to the L.A. lifestyle is far from complete without the obligatory trek to the Farmers Market, happening usually on Sundays in Brentwood, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica, where everything grown organic is peddled to health-conscious consumers adorned in Lululemon yoga pants with their re-purposed canvas bags in tow. Last but not least, take time to smell the ocean breeze of Southern California. The charming beach towns of L.A. are the perfect respite from the harshness of Hollywood’s klieg lights. Take a walk down Santa Monica Pier or Venice Beach (very popular among the tourist crowd). For a more serene sea and sand experience, head down to Playa Del Rey or Manhattan Beach. With its notoriously messy traffic situation, it’s an exhausting notion to realize that L.A.’s venerable attractions may pull you in so many directions. But the hustle of bustle is part of L.A.’s complex charm. Getting around is best conducted via a private vehicle rather than public transportation. The Red Line (Metro) can conveniently take you around Downtown L.A. and Hollywood but you may want to take your chances with a car rental if you are pressed for precious vacation time. There’s a little something for everyone in the City of Angels. Sticking to a priority list of must-sees early on may lessen the stress of last-minute decision-making. But don’t plan too hard -- after all, spontaneity is often what makes a holiday. For every pair of iconic landmarks you visit, try to squeeze in one local hang-out for a richer, more authentic Angeleno experience.
Marian Maraya Sierzant is a Los Angeles transplant with years of formative people-watching experience. Her superior skills in deciphering even the most heavily disguised celebrity is only eclipsed by her love for travel and food. Before relocating to L.A., Marian lived in the U.S. territory of Saipan where she worked as a newspaper journalist. These days, she keeps a day job to finance her slightly unmanageable caffeine obsession.

verlooking Ajman Beach and located on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street is a distinct Arabesque architectural structure emphasized by the traditional wind towers, with its mud finish making it a class apart the other buildings in the surrounding vicinity: The Ajman Palace. Be it during the day, or by night when the building is lit by diffused lights, the grandeur and presence of the seven-story hotel captivates the sight. Coming in aboard a car into the slightly elevated drive way, one is led to a new world of peace, comfort and luxury. The pure white
and beige tones set the mood of tranquility and serenity, which one craves in the fast paced world of today. Instantly, one is absorbed by the beauty of the surroundings and the high-quality environment. Technology has taken its rightful place at The Ajman Palace where the reservations desk offers a new dimension in the creation of customer loyalty: the database, the records of each guest’s individual history, which enables the staff to create individualized and personal care programs to satisfy the guest’s needs from the moment of arrival. The high performance reservation system,
and enjoy grand feasts with the extended family. As time passed, the extended family grew large and the house could not accommodate everyone. Thus the idea evolved of having a familystyle resort where family, friends and travelers could cherish the Arab traditional hospitality. As the discussion within the family gained momentum, the sheikh’s brother Salem, who has an ardent passion for photography added the idea of providing, in the same interior, an art gallery to host the work of contemporary artists. When the ladies of the family learned about the developments, they came up with a concept to host Emirati weddings in the same project. Thus the project expanded until it finally took the shape of Ajman Palace Hotel as we see it today. A hotel built on very sincere and personal feelings. These feelings have originated from fond memories so strongly felt that the desire to share the same experience with everyone was felt. Indeed the royal family wishes to provide
for visitors and travelers what they wish for themselves. Heritage To maintain the grandeur of Arabesque architecture, the entire structure has a mud finish. The tall wind towers beckon the visitors to the rich Arabian heritage the layout of the hotel is in a crescent shape highlighting the strong lunar connection to the Islamic calendar. The outer circle overlooks the city and the ruler’s palace and the inner circle overlooks the tranquility of the open beach. Nestled within the crescent is the swimming pool. Upon entering the main lobby, tall columns lit by blue LED lights and adorned by the traditional leaf and tendril motif of Islamic ornamentation raise both the gaze and spirit to the arched hand-painted dome in subtle gold, turquoise and aqua hues. On the right side is a traditional majlis to mark the cultural Emirati lifestyle, whereas the outdoor majlis beside the

The same values are experienced at The Ajman Palace which gives it a clear competitive advantage. The human touch of personnel working in direct contact with the customers clearly communicates the genuine authenticity, professionalism, and actual concern for the happiness and well-being of the customers. Concept Unlike other hotel projects, which are purely based on commercial criteria, The Ajman Palace has a different story to reveal. The history of this hotel is intimately connected to the rich Arab heritage. This project is the brain child of HH Sheikh Muhammad Bin Faisal al Qassimi. pool area has a fresh breath of contemporary intermediate hues. Another display of Arabesque art is conveyed by the geometric pattern of the mashrabiya. This was an important architectural feature of lattice wood work used in windows of earlier times to allow ventilation and maintain privacy of the people inside at the same time. This traditional design is translated in wooden partitions, glass panels along the staircases, the gypsum arches and the intricate pattern on the fresh bed linen at The Ajman Palace. Cuisine The food and beverage department acts like the main column on which the whole structure of the hotel rests. It should therefore provide theme restaurants to suit the culinary taste of a wide range of people. At The Ajman Palace, great attention is given to this concern by hiring a professional team comprised of world class chefs from Switzerland, France, the Arab World and the Far East. They are professionals specially trained to prepare mouth-watering international delicacies provided with impeccable service. Their talents are on particular display at the lavish Friday Brunch. Apart from a wide range of starters, savory and deserts, the buffet table is adorned by carved ice statues which indicate the extra effort taken to create novelty. Guests may choose to be seated inside the all-day dining restaurant, or enjoy the al fresco around the pool, or even at the sea terrace. The array of restaurant and lounge options include, to name a few: all-day dining restaurant, which caters to the taste of an international audience by serving a wide choice to satisfy a variety of tastes; the Arabesque Gourmet to provide the authentic dining experience of the region; the Dragons Palace, a Japanese/Thai fusion restaurant offering sushi and teppanyaki; and Nojoom Lounge, a rooftop shisha lounge where guests can unwind and gaze at stars in the sky. The ballroom The glamour of Arab wedding parties, their hospitality and gorgeousness is known to the world. However, one of the most important concerns on this occasion is privacy and segregation. The Ajman Palace takes care of this in the most discreet manner by providing an entrance, a lift, and a room with complete services, exclusively for the bride on her special day. The wedding package includes rooms for the close relatives on the same floor so that they all are just a few steps away from the prestigious ballroom which is the largest in the Northern Emirates and is spread over an area of 1,200 sq meters. The outstanding feature of The Ajman Palace is its minimalist dĂŠcor and soft opulence, extraordinary service and ideal location at the beachfront where the dancing sea waves splash joyously against the rocks. It seems as if the waves approach hand-in-hand towards the shore, strike against the rocks, shower the deck and then regress. This repetitive movement to and fro looks as though the waves are performing a traditional group dance. With superior amenities, the hotel focuses on pampering its guests by going far beyond the norm. The management is aware that the taste of guests could be different according to their wishes and needs. Therefore combining savoirfaire and the good use of technology, they offer their guests an a la carte environment which provides a lifestyle experience that makes each guest feel special and thus create moments to write home about. festival
Suk san wan
songkran Thailand says Happy Songkran Day A religious festival becomes a day when everybody must get wet and indulge in the traditional Miang kam.
G
reet everyone Suk san wan songkran this month as Thai nationals in the United Arab Emirates, more specifically Dubai, celebrate their New Year. Currently, there are 5,500 Thais across the UAE, with around 3,000 living in Dubai. Dubai, being an international expatriate city, celebrates most festivals from around the world, the Thai New Year among them. Songkran, as it is called, comes from the Sanskrit word, “Sankranta” which means “a move or change” — in this case the move of the sun into Aries. It is the Thai traditional
New Year celebrated from April 13 to 16. The most obvious celebration of Songkran is the dousing of water as a symbol of washing all of the “bad” away. Water is sometimes filled with fragrant herbs. This practice originated as a way to pay respect to people by collecting the water after it had been poured over the Buddhas for cleansing, and then using this “blessed” water to give good fortune to elders and family by gently pouring it on their shoulder. Today however, and especially among young people, the holiday has evolved to include dousing strangers with water to relieve the heat, since April is the hottest month in Thailand (temperatures can rise to over 100°F or 40°C on some days). Sadly, this has further evolved into water fights and splashing water over people riding in vehicles. The Songkran festival is counted as a new life. It is in fact the celebration of the vernal equinox similar to those of the Indian Holi Festival, the Chinese Ching Ming, and the Christian festival of Easter. The beginning of spring when the sun crosses the equator is now on the 21st of March which is due to the precession of the equinox. Other highlights of the Songkran are cultural performances like umbrella painting and making tung sai moo, or paper lanterns, which are a common fixture in Thai communities during the festival. Miang kam, a traditional Thai snack wrapped in a leaf, is a popular Songkran dish. With Songkran being a Buddhist festival, Thais also go to a Buddhist monastery to pray and give food to monks. They may also cleanse Buddha images in their homes. In Chiang Mai, where Songkran is a major event, Buddha images from all of the city’s important monasteries are paraded through the streets so that people can toss water at them, ritually ‘bathing’ the images, as they pass by on ornately decorated floats. In northern
60 Travel Arabia
Thailand, people may carry handfuls of sand to their neighborhood monastery in order to recompense the dirt that they have carried away on their feet during the rest of the year. The sand is then sculpted into stupa-shaped piles and decorated with colorful flags. Songkran is a time for cleaning and renewal. Besides washing household Buddha images, many Thais also take this opportunity to give their home a thorough cleaning, as well. In Dubai, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in conjunction with Royal Thai Consulate General - Dubai, Thai Trade Office and Thai Airways International - Dubai hosted a “Songkran Splash last month to herald the Thai New Year celebrations at Westin Dubai Mina Siyahi Beach Resort & Spa. ‘Food has no boundaries’ Mohammad Naim, Senior executive sous chef Mövenpick Hotel Makkah, Saudi Arabia
Food, like music and art, has no boundaries, ergo there will always be preparations yet to be discovered. This from the creator of the dish that won gold medal in the 2002 Hotelympia London, Mohammad Naim, senior executive sous chef at Mövenpick Hotel Makkah, Saudi Arabia, who 68 Travel Arabia
also said chefs “experiment with combinations, combine the tradition with the modern, and create new flavours.” Naim’s entry in the 2002 Hotelympia was his signature dish that has now become a hot item on menus: “Honey and lime crusted half duckling set on sundry tomato cake, shallot and celeriac braised in red wine, and a kumquat sauce.” Hotelympia is considered the “heartbeat of the food service industry.” “Art, music and food—they don’t have boundaries. All are good as long as people are enjoying them, especially cooking,” Naim said. Naim, who spent hours browsing through food magazines as a child, said he pursued a career in gastronomy because he wants to work culinary wonders. “I do believe that chefs are trained professionally to put their souls into food and create culinary miracles for the human taste, smell, touch, and sight,” he said. “Cooking is an art. Creativity is crucial for this line of work. A chef must know the tradition and history of the food he works with, as well as numerous ways to combine ingredients. Chefs think and experiment with combinations.
They can combine the tradition with the modern, a general taste with a touch of something personal, and create new flavours by trying new ingredient combinations.” Naim, whose interest in hospitality started at a neighbourhood restaurant the chef of whom he had the chance to work with, said that among memorable instances of his 22-year career was supervising lunch preparations for 200 people, mostly ambassadors, almost everyday as executive sous chef at Radisson SAS Hotel in Dublin, Ireland. “During lunch…all the ambassadors would gather in the bar which is very far from the kitchen. So I had to prepare the menu and cook in the main kitchen every morning then reheat them only with four microwave ovens with help from just three chefs. The customers’ lunch time would start at 1pm. And they all would almost arrive at the same time,” he said. Naim, who has bragging rights to eight gold medals so far, said he loves fusion cuisine the most though he’d want to take on molecular at some point down the road because it is “becoming more and more popular around the world.” Explaining why he like fusion, Naim said the time he has so far spent around the world working as a chef has enabled him to “recreate original recipes but with a signature of my own (while) keeping within the recognised limits of sensibility and tradition.” So, when in Makkah, pay Naim a visit to sample his culinary works of art.

In this way, the stones are
directly heated by fire, transmitting energy and emitting soft, gentle steam, which creates an excellent microclimate. Various plants, honey, and, of course, amber are widely used in Aridas Bath. Try a unique procedure of hitting (massaging) yourself with bunches of dried branches made of Lithuanian trees and plants. It is a unique experience fascinating the guests from western countries, as well as locals, who have not yet experienced the charm of true Lithuanian bath. Choose from a plenty of procedures allowing to take care of body and soul. The wet pre-bath is equipped with comfortable bunks designed for body peeling and massages with amber soap foam or honey. In addition, enjoy a relaxing massage with amber powder, performed by a professional bathhouse employee who will accompany you during your visit in the bath. In winter, enjoy contrasting procedures and an abundance of white, clean snow. Not ready for such a shock? Then a bucket of cold water will be a perfect alternative. tranquil moments
Zen The Spa: Relaxing retreat By P. Bedi
As she gently scrubbed away my dead skin, the low music began a soothing journey into the deep recesses of my soul. Was I ready for a relaxing spa session? That’s like asking: was I ready for life. The answer is always the same: of course I am ready…if only I could spare the time. In the middle of the week, after a few gruelling 18-hour days, I had a million things to 72 Travel Arabia
finish. Predictably, parking was a nightmare and I was running late. So when I walked in huffing and puffing to The Zen Spa at Beach Rotana, Abu Dhabi, I wasn’t looking around much at the soothing ambience. Head down, I was just typing an email on my BlackBerry when I mumbled my name at the reception and was shown in. Then the most amazing thing happened. I lost connectivity. It was like the god of social network begging me to give him a break. I did. As I changed into my new attire for the relaxing hours ahead, I could not help smiling as I finally took note of my surroundings. Wood dominated, lit up by candles and framed by white curtains all over, creating the warm and inviting feeling that inspires peace. First up was a Rasul Mud Extravaganza. One of the oldest Arabic rituals, the warmth of the Rasul Chamber purifies your body and mind, said the therapist. Just what I needed.
She guided me to a gently dimmed mosaic steam room and allowed a choice of seating: hot, warm or normal mosaic seats. As she gently scrubbed away my dead skin, the low music began a soothing journey into the deep recesses of my soul. Four types of mud, straight from the Dead Sea, were to help the process of detoxification for the skin. Gently, as she layered me with mineral mud of different colours, my therapist explained that the mud varies according to the type and density of granules needed for a particular body part. So while the white mud was for the face, the yellow was for the chest and back, the light grey for the hands and the dark grey for the feet. Sufficiently caked, she left me to relax as the lights dimmed further and steam gradually started filling the room. The process was slow and I realised that my impatience had still not worn off, even in these surroundings. Willing
myself to relax, however, was not difficult given the calming music and the changing lights of the fibre optic ceiling. Lost in time, it was difficult to figure out when the steam stopped and the lights changed to signal that the cleansing bath would begin. A rain shower washed away the mud and toxins and left my skin feeling baby soft as I tiptoed out of the room, leaving all my stress behind. Next on my list was an aromatherapy session. However, I wanted to rest a bit and opted to settle down on a comfortable lounge, drink a chamomile tea and mull on what was to follow. Now, I have good reason to be sceptical of massages. First, I can never relax enough to sleep. If anything, the prodding and pulling only charges my brain and leaves me sleepless for hours. Second, the pressure most therapists use is not right so that I leave with aches and pains in body parts I did not know existed. For the second time this evening, the powers-that-be were
about to step in and change my life forever. Allowed a choice, I settled for a mix of ginger oil and de-stress muscle gel to help soothe tired muscles, particularly the sore neck and back muscles. Lying face down on the massage bed, I gave myself up to the magical touch of my therapist, Ayu, as she soothed and comforted sore muscles and almost lulled me to sleep. An hour later, when I sat up on the bed, the aches in my back muscles had waved goodbye. Missing, however, was the usual feeling of pain. Ayu reminded me that to keep feeling this fresh I should opt for a massage at least once a month. Muscles too need some pampering, she said. I would just have to make the time to incorporate this in my daily schedule. As I walked out of the spa that evening, I realised I had found the answer to the question all spiritual leaders seem fond of: Are you ready for life? My answer? Yes, bring it on.
For the second time this evening, the powers-that-be were about to step in and change my life forever.

tendency for people to go for their favourite colors but this can be avoided because you choose the colors spontaneously which in turn, ascertain what areas need to be worked on. These colors then correspond to products from the Altearah range that the therapist uses as part of the facial to help harmonize the mind, body and spirit. I loved the temperature controlled treatment bed that supported my back and lower legs at just the right places and my racing mind soon calmed down. It was obvious my therapist Afeng from China was expertly trained in her craft and was keen to explain the theory behind the techniques deployed. Like all good therapists, there is constant communication with the client so any adjustments I wanted in connection to the reflexology points on my face or the surrounding massage was immediately acted on. Apparently different people experience the results in different ways, depending on how they’re feeling on the day, similar to reflexology on your feet. There is pleasant relaxation room – The Zen lounge where clients can rest (it’s hard to wake up immediately!) and I opted for a refreshing beetroot and ginger tea with some dates and nuts. The whole ambience of the spa is one of modern, contemporary comfort and being located at JBR - The Walk area makes it a sensible spot to combine with some boutique shopping, a meal or stroll by the seaside with friends. The spa is located nearer the Sheraton end of the The Walk in the Shams 1 building on the Plaza level. You can walk up the steps or take the lift and the spa is well sign-posted.
So spa, so good By Monica Kapila
We’re well aware Dubai has a melting pot of nationalities who choose to make it their destination of choice to live and visit. Now Dubai’s spa scene also reflects that eclectic blend. Spadunya uses a reassuringly Organic mix of French beauty product Altearah Bio, Spadunya’s own Color therapy range as part of their innovative take on facials and massages. In addition, they also use a tool from Vietnam to work on reflexology points as part of their amazing Anti-Aging Wellness facial. The Den Chien tool is used to unblock pressure points in the face and to encourage better circulation which, in turn, ultimately provides a more radiant complexion. I tried their Altearah Bio Wellbeing facial 74 Travel Arabia
which starts with a foot cleanse ritual using White Altearah Bio Himalayan salt crystals and warm water which I really enjoyed but thought the following colour therapy session using their gorgeous Altearah Bio range of perfumes and serums was fun and added a new dimension to the ritual of having a facial. Clients are asked to spontaneously choose four colors from a large palate of 14 colors. Each of these four colors reflect the elements that comprise the products used for the facial. So I chose orange, which represents creativity, the femine balance…, blue, which represents peace and communication; turquoise for inner calm and deep relaxation; and pink which represents love and self nurturing. I guess there is a
