The development will be the largest project by size and scale which DAMAC Properties has ever launched, further confirming the stabilisation and upturn in the Dubai real estate market. “We aim to make ‘Akoya by DAMAC’ the most desirable living environment in Dubai for professionals who recognise ultimate luxury,” said Hussein Sajwani, DAMAC Properties chairman. “The development will bring a blend of high-end, five-star living, with unrivalled facilities and create a haven for families looking to make Dubai their home.” The latest report from Jones Lang LaSalle showed that valuations of apartments and villas in Dubai has continued to climb. In the first quarter of this year prices, were up 18 percent in prime locations. The report also stated that for the first time since mid-2008, all sectors of the Dubai real estate market are currently positioned in the recovery stage of the market cycle. “We are in advanced discussions with a number of leading global brands to make ‘Akoya

by DAMAC’ the most sought-after area in Dubai,” Sajwani said. The purchase of land from Dubailand has been completed and all required paperwork has been received. DUBAILAND is a popular district of Dubai that includes entertainment, sporting, shopping and residential communities. The destination hosts a number of diverse attractions including Miracle Gardens, Sports City, Motor City and Global Village. It is well connected to key highways making it within quick and easy reach of prime costal and downtown areas. DAMAC Properties has completed 37 buildings to date with 7,817 units and spanning 13,945,299.00 sq feet. DAMAC Properties also has 66 more buildings at various stages of progress across the Middle East and North Africa region. These consist of 12,100 units. Dear editor, I wrote to congratulate organizers of this year’s Taste of Dubai. The event has obviously grown into a major city happening since it was first held six years ago. I think more and more business establishments have been participating so far, as well more and more people are visiting the event. Kudos. Max Tyron Dubai, UAE

520 B.C., archeological evidence suggests that Persians were the first to appreciate the excellence of pearls and mother of pearl shells called “sadaf.” Ancient Middle Eastern cultures appreciated healing powers in pearls and ground them into powder to cure anything from heart disease to epilepsy and from indigestion and fever to eye diseases and bleeding. In Islamic thought, pearls symbolize perfection and completeness of the soul, richly rewarded in paradise. The Middle Eastern affection for the pearl is enshrined in the Koran’s description of paradise where: “The stones are pearls and jacinths; the fruits of the trees are pearls and emeralds; and each person admitted to the delights of the celestial kingdom is provided with a tent of pearls, jacinths, and emeralds; is crowned with pearls of incomparable luster, and is attended by beautiful maidens resembling hidden pearls.” In Egypt, decorative mother-of-pearl was used at least as far back as 4200 B.C. However, their use as personal adornments has been related to the Persian conquest in the fifth century B.C.

Moreover, China has caught on with its freshwater pearl production, dealing a blow to the Japanese, who were also facing problems caused by the rising value of the yen and a drop in demand due to the economic crisis in 2008 and 2009, plus the notion among the young that pearls are not anymore hip. In light of this, the Crown Prince of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, recently led an entourage to Japan which resulted to the signing in March this year of an agreement with three Japanese entities to 28 Travel Arabia

revitalize Bahrain’s pearl industry. Bahrain pearl Historically, the world’s best known pearls came from the pristine waters of the Persian Gulf, close to what is now known as Bahrain. The world’s finest collections of pearls typically came from the Black-lipped Pearl Oyster and belonged to the royal families of Persia, India and Ceylon. Due to the discovery of a pearl necklace in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess from

They noted, following extensive research, that Ptolemy spoke of the pearl fisheries which existed from time immemorial at Tylos, the Roman name for the present-day Bahrain. The Arabian traveler, Ibn Batuta, wrote of the pearl-hunting activities in the area around 1336. In 1508 his writings were noted in the account of Italian traveler Lodovico Barthema’s expedition to the Island of Ormus. According to Batuta: “There were certain fishermen who go there in small boats and cast into the water two large stones attached to ropes, one at the bow, the other at the stern of each boat to keep it in place. “Then one of the fishermen would hang a sack from his neck, attach a large stone to his feet, and descend to the bottom--about fifteen paces under water, where he would remain as long as he can, searching for oysters which bore pearls, and put as many as he could find into his sack. “When he could remain underwater no longer, he would cast off the stone attached to his feet, and ascend by one of the ropes fastened to the boat. There were so many connected with the business that you would often see 300 of these little boats which came from many countries.” Tavernier Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, French diamond merchant and traveller known for his adventures throughout Persia also noted a pearl fishery around Bahrain that belonged to the king of Persia. He wrote, “There is a good fortress there in Bahrain, where a garrison of 300 men is kept.

Dear editor Your magazine’s article about pearls hit the spot. Yes, it is ironic to some extent that Bahrain, which started the global pearl industry back in the yonder days, has sought assistance from Japan to resurrect its industry. Japan, as we know, invented cultured pearls, which sounded the death knell for Bahrain’s pearl economy. Personally, I would prefer the natural over cultured ones. If you’re on a short break to Morocco, you’ll want to pack as much in as possible. But note that it is essential you try the Moroccan hammam experience.

ammam is a steam room, similar to a Turkish bath, where Moroccans habitually go each week to cleanse themselves. The hammam is an incredibly important part of Moroccan culture and life. Men, women and children will visit their local hammam at least once a week, and spend two or three hours there, sometimes even longer, catching up on gossips with friends, and following the long rituals for cleansing their bodies until their skin glows. The public hammam experience is a real eye opener for the more reserved Westerner who may totally be uninitiated to this. Although many Moroccans are becoming much more Westernised, the roots of their culture are still very evident everywhere you go, with many women covering their bodies, sometimes still from top to toe, when out in public. Not so in the Hammam. Men and women bathe separately of course, but the women are far from shy with each other when it comes to the public hammam. They will usually go with their friends or family, both to chat and socialise, but also to help each other with the ritual. Our bodies can efficiently expel toxins through the pores of the skin. To boost this process, a Moroccan bath is recommended. Known in Arabic simply as hammam, the Moroccan bath is a relaxing indulgence for women as well as men. Traditional Moroccan black soap hydrates and nourishes the skin in a steam bath; this is followed by an invigorating loofah exfoliation and another soap massage before finishing with a final mask.

This process improves skin elasticity and clarity, balances oil secretion, controls acne, refines skin texture by removing layers of dead skin, and rehydrates skin as it soothes redness and flakiness. Moroccan hamman If you’re on a short break to Morocco, you’ll want to pack as much in as possible. But note that it is essential you try the Moroccan hammam experience. There’s nothing quite like it for cleansing, revitalising and rejuvenating the mind and body, producing an overall effect of total, blissful relaxation. The spa and hammam tradition is centuries old and many of the staff who work in these spas have learned the ancient local skills passed down from generation to generation, meaning you can rest assured of being in experienced hands. Many Moroccan riads and hotels have their own hammams to meet growing demand from visitors. Morocco Gateway has a full list of hotels and riads in Marrakech, Fes and Essaouira that have hammams. Even if your chosen riad does not have a hammam of its own, you will find that many other hotels in the area open their spas up to non-guests. It’s best to consult your riad’s staff about booking time in these hammams. Alternatively, if you are feeling adventurous, there are numerous public hammams that visitors are welcome to use. Again, staff at your hotel can advise you where to find these and how to book. All hammams are unique and the treatments available in each vary slightly. However, broadly

speaking you can expect to be pampered in warm rooms decked out in marble, steaming the impurities from your skin, various body massages using clays and essential oils, wraps with algae or other plants, foot and scalp massage and treatments with hot towels or stones. The hammam experience is the perfect way to relax and unwind after a hard day’s exploring the city and you are guaranteed to leave feeling thoroughly refreshed. Public hammam On entering the public hammam, the first room is much like the changing rooms in a public swimming baths (minus any private cubicles!), with wooden benches around the perimeter of the room, and hooks for you to hang your clothes whilst stripping. There are ladies on duty as you enter where you can hire buckets (the Moroccans take their own) and leave your belongings once you have stripped off, and you can buy black soap and exfoliation gloves at the entrance when you pay to get in. You can also hire a lady to scrub you if do not have someone with you (or if you are too shy to let your friend do it for you). Moving on from the changing rooms, two huge tiled rooms with domed ceilings filled with steam and naked ladies come into view, the latter reclining all over the floors in such a manner that it was necessary to step over them to move on to the next room. In the third and final room are some floor space, where others can as well lay down with their mats and cleaning utensils to mark their spot.

Lining the walls are taps with piping hot water from which buckets are filled by bathers before retreating back to their mats. The process begins with getting enough water from the bucket through a plastic bowl to slosh it all over your body before covering one’s self in black soap and let it penetrate the skin’s pores. Hammam ladies will then take over once the soap has been washed off to do the hard part of exfoliating the skin by first asking the bather to lie flat on her back, before starting off with the arms. The scrubbing can be a shock at first because of the harshness but soon becomes enjoyable until it’s finally done top to toe with all the dead skin scraped away and the bather glow-

ing and tingling all over for hours. Hotel hammam A hammam in a hotel is a completely different story. Hammam rituals can vary from hotel to hotel, and some offer several different rituals for varying lengths of time. A full ritual in a larger hammam may involve you first sitting in a large pool of fairly hot, incredibly soft water for five to10 minutes before you are covered with mud or clay. Once the clay comes off, the black soap goes on and is left to penetrate the skin. That then gets washed off, and the fun really begins with the super vigorous exfoliation. A cold shower of-

ten follows to re-close the pores, and you would then receive a full body massage in a warm, comfortable darkened room – absolute bliss! In a smaller hotel the hammam would not have a pool of water, but instead you would sit on a wooden stool, or lie on a bench or on the floor and have hot water poured over you from a bucket. Hotel spa Most hotels that feature a hammam also offer spa treatments – at the very least a massage after your hammam. Prices are very similar to European prices in most places, but then the treatments are generally easily up to European

Rhassoul The rhassoul or ghassoul is a natural mineral clay mined in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco since the eighth century. It is combined with water to clean the body and has been used by Moroccan women for centuries to care for their skin and hair. Rhassoul contains silicon, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, lithium, and trace elements. Today, rhassoul is used in Turkish baths. Along with a glove, or “kessa”, rhassoul is used as a facial mask and poultice to the body. It is similar to a western style mud wrap. It is intended to soften the skin, reduce sebum secretion, regenerate the skin by removing dead cells, and rebalance the skin by tightening the pores. Traditional spa vs. hammam Marrakech is known for its spa breaks. But what would suit you better, a traditional hammam or a contemporary spa? The city is famed for its spa breaks, with authentic and traditional hammams lining the streets of the ancient medina. f you’re into bird-watching, or polo, or hidden beaches with its white sand set against the turquoise sea, Ghantoot it is. Located only 20 minutes from Dubai or about 40 minutes from Abu Dhabi, Ghantoot is that destination in between destinations often overlooked by visitors, and by some extent, local residents as well because it is so tucked in—which is great because this means you can have the place to yourself. Ghantoot is where you’d want to spend a getaway yet still be close to anywhere—be it Abu Dhabi’s Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld theme park, Dubai’s JBR The Walk or IBN Batuta Mall. Wrote one adventurer who had been to the place, “You are rarely joined by more than a handful of people; the loungers are so spaced out. For peace and quiet that can turn into fun

and frolics, Ghantoot is your beach.” Bird watching Now if that doesn’t give you a close-enough picture of how it is in Ghantoot, then you may also find it interesting to note that some areas of the place are great to see cream-coloured Coursers, Pacific Golden Plover, pipits, Pied, Desert and Isabelline Wheatear, and Caspian Plover. A group of bird lovers have said it is always worth a stop at Ghantoot for Grey Hypocolius around November to April. “This is currently the only site in the country the birds are seen with any regularity,” said Tommy Pedersen in his site, “UAE Birding: The eastern hotspot of the Western Paleartctic” on www.uaebirding.com Pedersen said Grey Hypocolius birds often provide only fleeting views at first, looking quite similar to a Southern Grey Shrike or a bulbul.

“Be patient and listen for their quiet Wigeonlike whistle. Flocks may perch up prominently in late afternoon when they come in to roost,” he said. According to the website, some 160 species (including escapes) have been recorded since December 2009. Pedersen said common residents are Grey Francolin, Rose-ringed Parakeet, White-cheeked Bulbul and Red-vented Bulbul, Indian Silverbill. Other birds regularly recorded are the Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse flying over in mornings, Song Thrush, Desert Whitethroat, Eastern Orphean Warbler, White-throated Robin, Black Redstart, Rufoustailed Scrub Robin and Southern Grey Shrike. Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club Of course, there’s more to Ghantoot than birds and beaches. The place is home to the Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club, which just recently concluded the HH President of UAE Cup 2013 which was participated in by five teams across the Gulf. The tourney was a 16-goal handicap (open) governed by the current rules and regulations provided for by the Hurlingham Polo Association. The new polo season is slated to start around mid October this year. Set in 300 hectares of lush grassland, the club boasts world-class polo and equestrian facilities, showcasing eight polo fields, stables for over 300 top-class polo ponies and a 2,000seater grandstand equipped with VIP entrance, media facilities and business centre.

The club’s colonial-style clubhouse includes dining facilities with outstanding views of the polo field as well as a swimming pool and fully equipped gymnasium. ay Sicily and the first thing that comes to mind would most probably be pasta, pasta and more pasta—be it spaghetti ai ricci, which is prepared with sea urchin, or pasta alle sarde, spaghetti with anchovies. But wait. Sicily, an emirate from 831 AD to 1072 38 Travel Arabia

AD, have had its honeymoon with Arabia that resulted in the fusion, if you will, of Arabic delicacies and traditional Sicilian cuisine which has found its way in popular menus of today’s Italian restaurants. It all started in 652 AD with the invasion by Muslims led by Caliph Uthman, the third of the Sunni Rashidun or Rightly Guided

Caliphs, who seized control of the entire island from the Byzantines, and which resulted in prolonged conflicts. This culminated in the arrival of some 10,000 more Arabs on Sicilian shores around 831 AD to nail their dominion air tight—well, until 1072, at least, when intradynastic quarrels fragmented their hold. During their reign, the Arabs made system-

atic, intensive farming possible and introduced crops including North African sugar cane from which the marzipan as well as the Sicilian pastry desserts, cannoli evolved, not to mention, gelato, the Italian ice cream. There also was the bergamot, a fragrant citrus that the Arabs used as flavouring for their exotic beverages and later on discovered to go well with snow from the Sicilian volcano, Mt. Etna to create sharbat, known today as sherbet. Moreover, Sicilians also adopted the Arabic—Tunisian, more specifically—couscous, which is made from durum wheat, cooked by steaming and served with meat or vegetable

stew on top, and named it, cuscusu, a refined version. Arabic was official language during the Islamic period which is why today many famous Sicilian dishes have Arabian names like the ricotta cake, Cassata which is from quas’ta, a big round pan in which it is made; and Cubbaita, the torrone made with honey, sesame seeds and almonds, which comes from the Arabic, qubbayt. Another mark of Arabian influence on Sicilian dishes is the Pasticcio di Pollo of the Emir of Catania which has olives, capers, and other ingredients that reflect the Arabic pen-

Lastly, Sicilians—and all Italians for that matter—follow a certain meal structure that begins with a “starter” or antipasti, followed by pasta and on to the main dish then capped with desserts and sweets. This however changed under the Arabs which introduced one-dish meals like the baked rice casserole or Riso al Forno So, next time you go Sicilian for dinner, bear in mind, the food on the table is very much Arab…and Greek, Roman and Spanish—the different cultures that dominated Sicily at one point or another for the past 2,000 years.

hoever said beach holidays are boring was wrong. Our family went Deep Sea Fishing at 6:30 am while on a beach holiday at Hemingways in Watamu, Kenya. Sea sickness pills, snacks, fishing equipment and local knowledge of where the big fish are – all supplied courtesy of Hemingways fine and experienced crew. eyes dripping with blood. Order your sashimi on the gantry and look forward to eating it at lunch or with evening drinks at the bar. There seems to be a sort of ritual associated with deep sea fishing, landing your fish on the gantry, weighing in (that’s the fish not the anglers) the ceremonial photograph followed by you ordering exactly how you’d like your fish, sashimied, as sushi or plain grilled with garlic butter. All of this has to be done in this precise order before you can leave with aching muscles and a serious smile making way for the

next Catch of the Day. We visited Hemingways during the recent Easter break but it is from November to March that’s best for Billfish, that’s Black Marlin and Sailfish to the uninitiated! Despite being there in April, plenty of Dorado Falusi, Yellow fin tuna and Wahoo were evident throughout our stay. Hemingways follows the guidelines of the African Billfish Foundation which seeks to promote conservation and protect the billfish species. Watamu is based on the edge of a marine park and boats go out to snorkel everyday from Hemingways jetty (a 30 second walk from our room) Guests only pay the $15 marine park fee (kids are $10) to take the boat. Snorkels and masks are on board so you don’t have to buy or bring your own. Be amazed at the variety of life in an underwater world called the Coral Gardens about 15 to 20 minutes out to sea from your door. We saw striped sergeant fish, translucent angel fish and a myriad of other species. Apparently the predatory lion fish was lurking low but I didn’t see him. The corals themselves spread out like loose meringue mixture that seems to be overflowing from an ocean bowl! The older members of our party (grandparents) accompanied us on a dhow cruise through the mangroves in the evening in the Mida Creek area of Watamu, a much more gentle boat ride this time with a feast of expertly prepared seafood cooked fresh to order. Drinks of all kinds are included; the local Dawa cocktail made from a Kenyan liqueur, lime juice and brown sugar seemed the most popular. The Mida Creek area in Watamu is home to six of eight of Kenya’s mangrove species, as well as abundant birdlife. The area covers 32 square km and the Dhow Cruise starts at Hemingways own private boatyard. The cruise itself takes a leisurely 2 hours from start to finish and you can watch the sky change colour over time from brilliant blue to calming night violets with sprinkles of stars. We also took a morning out to explore the fascinating old town of Malindi which still retains some of it’s Islamic influence and reminded me a bit of Zanzibar. Weave your way through tiny alleyways that reveal tinier shops. Take a closer look at this seaside town that became a favourite of the Italians and wander through the local fruit and vegetable market Soko ya Zamani. Stock up on slender vanilla pods to flavour your sugar back home, you’ll be tempted to pick up packets of exotic spices like cinnamon and mace. Eat lunch at the iconic Old Man and the Sea restaurant on Malindi’s Mama Ngina street or seafront road and linger over a simply prepared lunch while feeling the sand in your toes. It’s obligatory to pick up some Kikoys from the superbly well stocked Shakir’s emporium, you can bargain a little but not much. We had lunch this time round at BarBars, and relished authentically thin pizza and cold Tusker beer

for a tiny sum. Check out the incredibly well stocked Italian supermarket next door and I dare you to resist buying the Malindi Mozzarella, creamy pannacotta and fresh pastas. Back at the hotel I decided to visit the small herb garden which is regularly raided by the head chef who can spice up salads with mini pili pili chillies full of fiery heat or temper pasta sauces and salads with sweet marjoram and bulbous fennel. A beguiling number of plants with exotic blooms are also grown in a mini forest like area next to the herb garden. Glaringly red hibiscus blossoms, impossibly high brilliant flaming orange Ixoras and fantasy island type ferns jostle for space among giant palm fronds that act as fabulous umbrellas if you’re caught in a tropical shower. Daniel the head gardener has lovingly tended Hemingways garden for over 8 years now and is typical of the caring and loyal staff at the resort. Ask at reception for a behind the scenes garden tour. Need to know From the snarling traffic jams of Nairobi to the serenity of Kenya’s sun drenched beaches took an easy hour by flight on a 540 airlines plane from Jomo Kenyatta airport. Apparently an international airport is currently being built but for now, Malindi is a simple one hour flight from Nairobi. ineteen hours and 39 minutes. About five hours short to a day. More than 16,000 miles. That’s how long it takes to travel from Dubai to California‘s Yosemite National Park. It sounds like an exhausting journey. It probably is. One can only wonder what madness could possess a 50 Travel Arabia

person to take such a grueling combination of plane ride and road trip just to see a bunch of trees, rocks and cascading water. But all of 24 hours dwarf in comparison to my 20-year journey to Yosemite, a place I thought I could only visit through the pages of books and magazines. It all started as a dream

long before I could make out what I was to become after college and long before I could imagine going to America was a possibility for me. Madness, it may be but I know that the trees in Yosemite are no ordinary trees. They are descendants of an ancient line of trees that can live for over two thousand years. They are giant sequoias — symbols of longevity and strength. The rocks in Yosemite are towering granite domes and rugged peaks sculpted by glaciers for millions of years; and the gushing water there is capable of bringing dramatic natural transformations throughout the Park. Again, my first trip to the Park was 20 years in the making. It’s the kind of madness that could put a lot of sense to a 16-hour nonstop flight from Dubai to San Francisco Airport and a four-hour road trip from there to Sierra Nevada’s crown jewel. I swear that the four-hour drive will be practically trifling. The postcardready sights of thriving skyscrapers and bustling downtowns in the Bay Area, and the vast green fields, wineries, and lakes of the Central Valley make the road trip to Yosemite, by itself, an excursion. And although the 187-mile drive to the Park already is a satisfying treat, its memory gets easily blurred by the splendor of Yosemite’s giant sequoias, soaring granite cliffs and gushing waterfalls — perfectly spread across 1,190 square miles of what John Muir has called “the grandest of all the special temples of nature.”

I have visited Yosemite three more times since my first but have yet to experience all of the many moods, views, sounds and smells of its high sierra, granite cliffs, sequoia groves and valley. Really, you could easily stay two weeks and still not see it all. The Park has no apparent marquee attraction. There’s an abundance of Yosemite’s natural beauty everywhere — from the Glacier Point’s breathtaking views of the Valley, the Half Dome and a cascading river to the amazing sights of the El Capitan granite cliff and the Bridalveil waterfall from Tunnel View. No state-of-the-art camera can capture the magnificent images seen by the naked eye, made even more spectacular by the soothing ray of sun and the restful breeze gently touching your skin. To say that Yosemite is a delightful vision of Nature’s artistry is an understatement. Things to do Yosemite, however, is more than just a sightseeing experience. There are as many activities to do as there are beautiful things to see. Visitors can go cycling around the Valley or take a hike to any or all of the many trails around the park. The Bridalveil Fall is an easy 0.5-mile roundtrip hike on a paved trail; the one-mile loop trek to the Lower Yosemite Fall is also a painless walk. And while lakes in Yosemite are famously remote, Mirror Lake is relatively easy to reach through a two-mile roundtrip hike. It is famous for its reflections of Half Dome and Mount Watkins. For the more adventurous visitors, Yosemite’s skyscraper granite cliffs are sure to challenge 52 Travel Arabia

the mind and the body. A Yosemite guidebook declared in 1868 that “the summit of Half Dome will never be trodden by human foot.” George Anderson proved it wrong in 1875 when he reached the top of the Half Dome. Countless others have ascended on its sheer granite wall — a 16.3-mile climb with 4,800 feet elevation gain. My fear of heights has kept me away from the walls of its towering cliffs but not even the faintest of hearts could be a deterrent in experiencing Yosemite. Many colorful scenes about history and culture that define the park unfold in the film Spirit of Yosemite, shown regularly at the Visitor Center. ix million people going to Ibiza to party can’t be wrong. Ibiza, an island in the Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of Valencia is a popular destination for one reason: electronic dance music. Since 2009, the place has seen an annual increase in tourist numbers, with nearly six million people travelling through Ibiza Airport in 2012 alone, tourism officials said. Well-known nightclubs like Privilege, Amnesia, Space, Pacha, and Eden among others take turns in making sure the music plays on and the dancing doesn’t stop. Famous DJs run their own weekly nights around the island, many of whom perform to present new songs within the house, trance and techno genres of electronic dance music. In fact, the island has achieved worldwide

fame as a cultural center of sort for house and trance in particular. Underground music parties are common and enjoyed by the many international musicians, artists, and travelers drawn to the unique creative environment of Ibiza. The season traditionally begins at the start of June’s opening parties and finishes on the first weekend of October with the closing parties. A typical schedule for clubbers going to Ibiza includes waking at noon, early evening naps, late night clubbing, and “disco sunrises.” But Ibiza has more to it than being a party venue. Large portions of the island are registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include “God’s Finger” in the Benirràs Bay as well as some of the more traditional Ibizan cultural sites such as the remains of the first Phoenicians settlement at Sa Caleta. Other sites are still under threat from the

developers, such as Ses Feixes Wetlands but this has now been recognised by as a threatened environment and it is hoped that steps will be taken to preserve this wetland. Because of its rustic beauty, companies and artists alike frequently use the island for photographic and film shoots. A monument called “The Egg” has been erected in honour of Christopher Columbus, who was supposedly born on the island, can be found in Sant Antoni. Since 2009, Ibiza has seen an increase in tourist numbers every year, with nearly six million people travelling through Ibiza Airport in 2012, tourism officials said. The summer season has become concentrated between June and September, focusing on the clubbing calendar which is currently booming. In recent years, the luxury market has dramatically improved with new restaurants, clubs and improvements to the marina in Ibiza Town.

How to get there You can reach the island either by plane or ship. Ibiza has its own airport, Sant Josep, set in the southern part of the island. Several airlines provide direct access from the Spanish Peninsula and Europe. The three main ports are the ports of Ibiza, Santa EulĂ ria and Sant Antoni. The ferry companies -Balearia, Iscomar and Acciona- sail to the ports of Ibiza and Sant Antoni from different places on mainland Spain. Apart from the ferry crossings, it is also possible to reach the island by private ship, chartered crossings and various cruises. Superlatives aptly describe this ‘Centre of Now’ Among Dubai’s attractions is the tourist hub called Downtown Dubai, also dubbed the “Centre of Now” because most major city and international entertainment events happen there. Indeed, superlatives aptly describe the place, which has the world’s tallest building, the US$1.5 billion, 823-metre tall Burj Khalifa to which people around the globe are glued to during New Year’s Eve for its dazzling fireworks display; and the biggest shopping mall, Dubai Mall, home to 1,200 shops and site of numerous attractions, including an Olympic-sized ice rink, an aquarium and a water zoo. Downtown Dubai, which is about two kilometres in size, is a large-scale mixed-use complex which has most of the city’s landmarks, which also includes the mesmerizing Dubai Fountain, which reportedly cost US$217 million and was constructed by the same group behind the fountains at the Bellagio Hotel Lake in Las Vegas— WET Design based in California, USA. water as high as 150 metres in the air and can dance to a range of classical and contemporary Arabic and international music. Emaar Boulevard, The Residences and South Ridge comprise high-rise residential towers. And Emaar Square is a low-rise office complex. For its part, The Address Downtown Dubai is a 63-storey, 306-metre high skyscraper alongside Dubai Mall, Old Town, and the Burj Khalifa Lake. It is the sixth tallest building in Dubai and the 36th in the world. Another Downtown attraction is the Burj Plaza, a more intimate outdoor venue, set by Burj Park and featuring direct views of The

Dubai Fountain. The SHA Spa covers a total area of more than 2,000 square meters, divided into hydrotherapy and treatment zone. Within hydrotherapy one can enjoy therapeutic pools, such as physic-hydro-massage, tone-up pool, pebbles path, tepidarium, sauna, calidarium, sensation shower, and relaxation areas, surrounded all by and incredible Zen garden. There are also installations for chromotherapy and music therapy, where one can

enjoy a multi-dimensional or an aqua relax massage. The treatment zone comprises 40 cabins, in which all kinds of natural therapies, massages and beauty treatments are offered, one of these being a suite for couples, or for thalassotherapy.
