Irish students come first in world for award winning LED lightbulb! Three students from County Cork have picked up a top international award for their research into LED street lights. Ellen Fitzgerald, Aoife Dolan and Niamh Nyhan, from Sacred Heart Secondary School, Clonakilty, represented Ireland at the 7th annual International Environment and Sustainability Project Olympiad (INESPO), held in Amsterdam in June. Having won the SEAI sponsored INESPO Award at the SciFest@ SFIDiscover national final in November 2014, the students saw off competition from 47 other countries to claim the number one spot at the INESPO international final 2015. Their project focussed on the issue of energy efficiency and energy usage in street lighting. They discovered that there are an estimated 400,000 street lights in Ireland, and that the cost of street lighting throughout the country is on average €40million per annum. Realising that LED bulbs are much more energy efficient
Cutting energy waste will save €1.8billion annually
than the bulbs currently used in street lamps, they set out to design an LED bulb that could be screwed directly into the standard street lamp fitting. As well as being more energy efficient, the LED bulb has a much longer life expectancy, thus cutting down on checking and replacement costs.
Households and businesses could save €1.8billion annually by being more energy efficient. Energy efficiency will also reduce Ireland’s reliance on imported fossil fuels and create 2,000 additional jobs. That is, according to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) which has launched its report, ‘Unlocking the Energy Efficiency Opportunity’. The analysis indicates that delivering these energy-efficiency improvements could also boost the Government balance sheet by around €1billion. Dr Eimear Cotter, Head of Low Carbon Technologies at SEAI, said, “Already, Ireland is saving €700million a year through greater energy efficiency. It is good for households, good for businesses and good for the economy. To read the full report, visit www.seai.ie
Klein Tools – definitely built to last! If proof were needed that Klein Tools are built to last, it comes courtesy of Malcolm Gamble, an electrician from County Londonderry who has owned his pair of Klein pliers for over 37 years – and they are still going strong! Purchased from Dunlop and Hamilton in Coleraine, Malcolm recalls that they were quite expensive at the time…but definitely worth it. He said, “When I bought these pliers I was just starting out in my trade and the amount that I spent on them was quite a lot for an apprentice. Had I known that I would still be using them, and that they would still have a sharp edge 37 years later I probably wouldn’t have minded at all! “They are a great set of pliers and have lasted through numerous jobs although I have mainly used them for

wiring houses – not just as a pair of pliers either because they are a really good weight for hammering clips in! In fact they are a bit of an all-rounder really.” Malcolm Duncan, Managing Director of Klein Tools, added, “It’s always great to hear from customers old and new but it is particularly good to hear about a product which has surpassed the expectations of one of our customers. We have always been confident that the build and quality of our range of tools is second to none but this just proves that it is in fact true.” If you have an old faithful Klein Tools product which beats Malcolm’s 37 year old pair of pliers then get in touch at sales@super-rod.co.uk W: www.kleintools.co.uk

IEEF investment is good news for energy efficient projects
Priva Blue ID provides hotel energy-saving solution The Maldron Hotel in Derry-Londonderry is among a growing number of facilities to leverage the benefits of Priva’s Blue ID building automation solution. The simple-to-install, easy-to-use system has proved enormously successful, helping to generate impressive electricity savings of £10,489 in its first three months of operation. The hotel wanted to update its existing boiler house and AHU control panels to the latest technology, and the hotel’s owners engaged the help of building services consultant, Beers Engineering and M&E contractor, Pipeline Services Belfast. ACS Controls, a specialist in the configuration and installation of energy management systems, was engaged to deliver the
controls strategy. The building automation system of choice at ACS is Priva’s Blue ID, an innovative, modular solution that is quick and easy to install and programme. Thanks to its modularity, Priva Blue ID is suitable for every application, from a small hotel to a large hospital, and from a university complex to a data centre. Priva Blue ID hardware consists of a base on which individual functional modules, containing all mission-critical components, can be installed. The wiring takes place on the base, which is robust and insensitive to failures. T: (NI) 01923 813 480 or (RoI) 0044 01923 813 480 E: contact.priva@priva.co.uk W: www.priva.co.uk
Keynote energy seminar A Policy Forum for Northern Ireland Keynote Seminar will be held in Belfast on September 17, entitled ‘Priorities for energy policy in Northern Ireland: competition, investment and security of supply’. The seminar’s focus will be on the future direction of policy for energy in Northern Ireland and key priorities going forward, and follows the publication of the Enterprise, Trade and Investment Committee’s Review of Electricity Policy. It will bring together key policymakers and regulators, with representatives

from energy providers, utility companies, business and domestic customers, financial, legal and planning professionals, environmental organisations and local government, academics and other interested parties. It is expected that delegates will discuss the key challenges and opportunities facing the energy sector, including security of supply, cost of domestic and industrial electricity and the potential for expanding the use of renewable energy. Developed to act as a catalyst for the development of Irish energy-efficiency projects, the Ireland Energy Efficiency Fund (IEEF) recently landed an €8.5million investment from the Representative Church Body (RCB), the investment manager and trustee of the Church of Ireland Pension Fund. This follows investment from Glen Dimplex (€5m) and London & Regional Properties (€12.8m) into the €70million fund, which is aimed at reducing energy demand from commercial buildings. According to David Hourihane, Managing Director of Sustainable Development Capital LLP, the IEEF’s investment advisor, these investments are proof of the increasing interest from domestic and international pension funds in energy efficiency as a new investment asset class. He also stated that energy efficiency investments produce stable, risk-adjusted returns while delivering value for money to the end client, along with significant environmental returns through funding infrastructure that reduces energy consumption. To date, the fund has made two investments for a combined €7million. A €2million investment was made to install 5,000 low energy usage LED panels across seven Tesco sites. This project is expected to result in the creation of 16 new jobs at DCS and deliver estimated average annual energy savings of more than €540,000. A further €5million investment was made in Louth County Council to install 2,000 Climote smart heating control units in social housing units across the county in what’s been described as Europe’s largest social housing regeneration scheme. Robert’s marathon effort raises £2,150 for Cancer Focus NI Atlas Fire & Security (NI) Ltd Director, Robert Creagmile, has thanked everyone from the industry who supported his run in the Belfast City Marathon in aid of Cancer Focus NI. This was Robert’s first attempt at completing the gruelling 26.2 miles and while he is delighted at getting over the finish line he is happier at the £2,150 raised for the charity. “The support I have received has been unbelievable and it helped keep me going around the course,” said Robert. “I want to thank everyone from the electrical industry who generously donated money. Cancer Focus NI is a local charity which, as well as research, provides much needed support and care for those people and their families, who are affected by cancer in Northern Ireland, so the money is going to a great cause.” Robert also organised a draw to say thank you to those who had donated, with Kevin O’Neill from O’Neill Electrics the lucky winner of a box of wine, courtesy of Neill Wines, which has outlets in Groomsport and Helensbay. Robert Neill, Neill Wines, commented, “We are proud to be able to support Robert in helping to raise money for Cancer Focus NI.” T: Atlas Fire & Security on 028 9039 1000 W: www.atlasfs.co.uk

The British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) is to provide low and medium voltage cable testing to all International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) cable standards. Dr Jeremy Hodge, Chief Executive at BASEC, said, “As our service has become recognised in more territories, we have experienced an increase in the demand for testing to IEC cable standards and therefore we have expanded our cable testing scope to include all low and medium voltage IEC cable standards where previously this was limited to a few key types. The benefit to cable manufacturers is where they require multiple testing to cover British and European (BS EN) standards and IEC standards, we can test to both standards at the same time where this is permitted. We can then provide a double test report for one cable, and potentially award two certificates.” T: 01908 267300 or (RoI) 0044 1908 267300 E: mail@basec.org.uk W: www.basec.org.uk
Ireland is a WEEE recycling champion WEEE Ireland has announced milestone figures for electric and battery recycling over the past 10 years. Since 2005, WEEE Ireland has increased the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) take-back rate in its collection areas to over 50% of household WEEE, surpassing the 2016 EU target (45%) on behalf of its members. However, with continuous increasing EU targets designed to encourage us all to recycle more, the challenge remains for Ireland to hit a 65% collection for recycling level by 2019. Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland, said, “The landscape of electrical recycling in Ireland has completely changed since WEEE Ireland was established by the producers of electrical appliances in 2005. We have all moved from putting WEEE and waste batteries into our rubbish bins to automatically taking back for recycling to retailers or Local Authority recycling centres or weekend collection events.” W: www.weeeireland.ie

ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES CHARITY
Northern Ireland’s Electrical provides the latest news on events from the Electrical Industries Charity – the national charity of the electrical and energy industries…
N.IRELAND BRANCH
Where there’s a will there’s a way
T
he Electrical Industries Charity is urging everyone in the industry to make a will, to ensure that your estate is shared amongst the important people in your life when you’re gone. Coming to the end of our days is something which many people find difficult to talk about, but if you want to protect the people you love then you need to make your wishes known – regardless of your circumstances. Operations Manager, Jill Nadolski commented, “There are a number of reasons why people don’t make a will, for example, if you are a ‘nuclear family’– married (once) with kids – most people think that you haven’t got too much to worry about. But you should still make a will to appoint guardians for your children, to guarantee control of your assets and, most importantly, to make it easier for your family in the event of your death.
“If your circumstances are more complicated, then you need a will to make sure that there’s no confusion about who’s meant to get what. This is especially true if you have a business where you might also have a business partner, contracts, customers and staff to consider. Not making a will means leaving everything up in the air and any uncertainty could leave the future of your business in jeopardy. “Ultimately, making a will isn’t a big deal, but it is important to get it right, which is why engaging the services of a professional is sensible. As a charity we have selected RIFT Wills as our preferred partner and, as a result, if you are employed by a JIB member company, they will donate 10% of the fee for
drawing up a will to the Electrical Industries Charity – which is another good reason to make a will.” If you’re still not convinced, then perhaps you should look upon it as an opportunity to help people because you can also leave a charitable gift in your will – ensuring that you can continue to help others after you have gone. BENJAMIN DYER, OF POWERED NOW, LOOKS AT WAYS YOU CAN ACQUIRE MORE CUSTOMERS BY IMPROVING YOUR QUOTING…
Writing quotes that win business
F
or electrical contractors who are ambitious, you can never have enough leads, so it’s important to make the most of every one you get. The impression that you make during any phone calls and site visits is crucial. Some things to think about include how you can demonstrate your reliability by calling back and turning up on time and ensuring that you look and act in a highly professional way from the first contact. Find out why they want the job doing, as well as the details and be prepared to suggest alternatives, where appropriate, without being too pushy. At all times be helpful and trustworthy (if you win the job, you or your team will be around the customer’s house a lot, so ensure you are sensitive to this) and don’t forget that, during communications, you should try to educate the customer’s expectations on cost, so when the quote arrives it isn’t a shock. Now we get to actually writing the quote. Here are the main tips: • • • •
Put some effort into the design and layout of your quotes. If your talents don’t lie in that direction, maybe use a graphic designer to create a template. Make sure the customer doesn’t get any surprises. Be crystal clear whether this is a quotation (fixed price) or an estimate (best guess). Tell them about your other jobs, maybe with before and after pictures illustrating how tidy your work looks. Ideally, include recommendations from other customers.
www.elecmagazine.com
FOLLOW US ON:
• Help your credibility with a guarantee, trade organisation memberships, qualifications or something similar. Your quote should include a full description of the work you plan to do so people can see what a lot of work is involved. It should say exactly what is included, with a statement that anything not specifically incorporated into the quote is excluded. It’s good to reflect back what they told you about what’s required - it shows you have been listening. Include a statement that price will vary if something you couldn’t reasonably expect to have foreseen crops up. You shouldn’t provide a detailed price breakdown line by line. It risks being passed to competitors, used as a negotiating tool or the customer trying to source materials themselves.
Always get your quote back to the prospect as quickly as possible, as it can make all of the difference. Always follow up quotes and chase the customer if you don’t hear back after a week. If you do lose, do so gracefully, as there may be another time. When you win, then make sure you do a great job. That’s how you’ll benefit from the free recommendations that follow.
About the author U Benjamin Dyer is co-founder and CEO
of Powered Now, the mobile admin app that takes the pain out of paperwork and payment for tradesmen and field trade companies. W: www.powerednow.com
PRICING The quickest way to go bust is by poor estimating. Over-price and you will usually lose out. Under-price and you will win loss-making jobs. That means a continuous stream of loss-making jobs. It’s sometimes worth pricing low to get jobs when you would otherwise have a quiet patch, but this should only ever be for a short while. Good preparation - for instance, having supplier website references and catalogues all handy in one place - can make quotes easier and quicker to produce. Using smartphone and tablet-based software for handling paperwork (like the Powered Now app from my company, or one of many others) also helps make life easier.
Ben Dyer.

SparkSafe’s Charlotte Bamber and Kimberley Norton meet with Premier Electric’s Barry Johnston, H&S Manager and Kirsten Ingram, H&S Assistant.
Premier gets to grips with SparkSafe LtP
T
he senior management team at Bellaghy-based Premier Electrics, one of Northern Ireland’s most successful electrical contractors, are always on the lookout for an opportunity to impress their domestic and international clients.
Quality improvement and electrical safety is a constant high on the company agenda. Accordingly, Premier Electrics has been persuaded to roll out a programme over the next few months aimed at registering all of the company’s directly employed staff and
sub-contract supply workers onto the new licence to practice system. Speaking on behalf of the company, Barry Johnston said, “Premier believe that completing a quality project on time and within budget, requires a combination of trusted procedures developed over time in a competitive marketplace and a workforce passionately committed to the concept of perfect delivery. The way we assure our place in tomorrow’s marketplace is to make sure that the quality is absolutely dependable today.” Premier clearly has its sights set high when it comes to evidencing the credentials and competency of the company’s workforce composition to clients. Kirsten Ingram, Premier Electrics’ H&S Assistant, commented on the process, saying, “We have found the registration process fairly straightforward. The website is well designed and intuitive for the user and we are impressed with the support from the staff at Sparksafe.”
PQQs and Licence to Practice
D
uring the past decade, there have been more contractors than available work. This has forced most to adopt a toxic, hard-bid, low-cost approach to Public Sector tenders. Public Sector procurement organisations have also been driven by the EU towards a quality improvement and value-for-money agenda. This inevitably means that the burden to produce evidence in support of PQQ returns is progressively increased. Since February 2014, the Northern Ireland Central Procurement Directorate has been persuaded by the local industry to add an important, and perhaps overlooked, dimension to NI PQQs, namely the scrutiny of individual workers through an online licence to practice system, known as SparkSafe LTP. Quality improvement and value-for-money are the drivers for the SparkSafe LTP system. At the present time there are circa 2,500 to 3,000 practicing electrical workers based in Northern Ireland. Over half of these workers are dependent
on projects emanating from the Public Sector. Significant numbers of electrical workers are either unqualified or underqualified for the work that they are tasked to carry out. SparkSafe is aimed at providing the client with a resource to discern and select the preferred electrical contractor based on the competency and composition of their direct and sub-contracted workforce. The system is primarily designed to highlight the competency of electrical workers to the client and, by virtue of this, reveal those who are substantially untrained and unqualified. A secondary purpose of the system is to help motivate and steer unqualified and underqualified workers to acceptable client and industry standards. Electrical contractors who are committed to quality improvement measures are more likely to win contracts, acquire repeat business and earn profits. This can and has been undone by others who depend on a supply chain that produces subeconomic bids based on a supply chain comprising of lower cost, untrained and unqualified workers.
Sparksafe’s dismay at rate shocker £9.00 per hour! What a shocker for local electricians to be offered £3.12 below the nationally determined (shop employed) hourly pay rate. A Belfast-based recruitment agency recently advertised the low pay rate during June 2015 on behalf of a County Armagh factory operator. The rate is a throwback to the late 1980s and marks another low in the value that is placed by some upon the worth of highly skilled and qualified electricians.

PAUL DAWSON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF ESP LOOKS AT HOW INSTALLERS CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CONTINUED GROWTH IN THE CCTV SECTOR BY ADOPTING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES…
Caught on camera G rowing usage of CCTV in various sectors (hospitality, education and retail for example) has created huge opportunities for CCTV manufacturers, distributors and installers. According to a recent research study, the market for global CCTV is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 12% during 2015-2020. In the UK, in the short to medium-term future, the prospects for the overall electronic security market are positive. While there have been a number of budget cuts which will continue to impact on large scale projects in the public sector, the improving economic climate should support installations in some private end-use sectors, with overall market growth of over 10% forecast for 2014-2018. To date, analogue CCTV has been more appealing due to its low cost and simpler installation, and the fact that virtually any analogue CCTV camera can be plugged into any analogue DVR using the same camera to DVR cabling. This means that CCTV installation has literally been as simple as plugging and playing. However, there is a growing demand in the CCTV sector for systems with high definition image resolution and there are now several options available, which installers can consider for those customers looking for an upgrade to their existing analogue solution, or those wanting to adopt a CCTV system for the first time.
HD-SDI (High Definition Serial Digital Interface) This is the most mature HD option available and produces 1080P HD resolution images. This can be considered when upgrading from a standard analogue CCTV system to a HD system, because it can operate on the same cabling already installed. What must be considered before installation is the fact that the DVR to camera cable run has a limitation of 100m (this can be increased using extender units) and the grade and quality of the cable must be high in order to successfully carry the HD-SDI video signal. In system upgrades both the DVR and the cameras will need replacing with HD-SDI units.

IP (Internet Protocol) IP CCTV is producing images of great quality in a convenient and energy-efficient manner. IP cameras work by turning images and audio into data and transmitting this data over a network or Internet connection. The ultimate benefit of this over analogue CCTV systems is the potential to integrate IP CCTV into existing IT networks and CAT5 cabling infrastructure. This solution is especially beneficial when tackling coverage of much larger areas such as university campuses, multi-level buildings and multi-site retail stores. IP also offers the highest resolution cameras, albeit at the highest cost, and it is important to consider that regardless of a camera’s image quality claims, the video signal will only be as good as the connectivity and this is more than likely to impact on the clarity of the image that is transmitted by the camera. Also for consideration is that with cameras of such high megapixels (they can be over nine times the resolution of analogue) the memory capacity required for recorded image data storage also greatly increases. IP CCTV is a technology growing in popularity, but for the average small to medium installations, it is still an option yet to mature in the UK market.
AHD (Analogue High Definition) This is the most newly developed solution for transmitting full 720P and 1080P HD digital video in a CCTV surveillance system. The
core concept of AHD is to deliver high definition video using digital TV (DTV) transmission. AHD leverages the extremely robust AV transmission capability of DTV to easily and seamlessly upgrade an analogue CCTV surveillance system to digital full HD. With AHD, high definition digital video can be transmitted easily over existing coaxial cabling - the same cabling used for existing standard resolution analogue systems (such as 960H) and the HD option of HDSDI. However, AHD does not suffer from the DVR to camera cable run limitation that is experienced with HD-SDI. In fact, AHD cable runs can easily exceed 300m longer than a standard analogue system’s capability. AHD products are on average lower cost than HD-SDI and also provide compatibility with standard resolution cameras, allowing a mix of standard and HD cameras connected to a single DVR. This is most useful if only a partial upgrade to HD is required. In system upgrading to HD, the DVR and the cameras will need replacing with AHD units. Although this is the newest option, it is already the fastest growing and it is expected that AHD will be the de facto standard for digital video surveillance systems both now in the future. New Gent fire detection and alarm system from G4S Fire & Security Systems reduces problem of false alarms…
Degrees of success for G4S at Stirling University
G
4S Fire & Security Systems has provided the perfect solution to reduce false alarms during the redevelopment of Stirling University. A major part of the redevelopment was to provide the most suitable fire detection and alarm system (FD&A) for the new accommodation blocks at the university. The university had experienced a significant problem with false alarms in the past, recording more than 200 incidents annually. The new FD&A system would have to not
only provide the ultimate protection across the redeveloped properties but also help to alleviate the serious issue of on-going false alarms. An FD&A system provided by G4S Fire & Security Systems were selected as the most efficient solution to address this critical problem. Robert Abraham, Account Director, G4S Fire and Security Systems, was responsible for providing fire safety across the whole of the redeveloped site. He explained, “We have worked with Gent
products for over 20 years and recognise the benefits this specific solution can bring to a university setting. One of the outstanding advantages of the Gent system is its ability to detect real fires quickly. The S-Quad devices, installed throughout the redeveloped campus, incorporate the most advanced form of multi-sensor detection, which will overcome the significant number of unwanted false alarms.” G4S Fire & Security Systems is an Elite Technology Centre, the highest level of

Approved Systems Integrators that form part of the Gent 24 Network. Gent awards the Approved Systems Integrators’ status to independent fire specialist companies that have been selected, trained and approved based on their extensive capabilities and considerable experience in the fire industry. The team at G4S has been involved in the Stirling University project from its initial stages, working closely with two Northern Ireland companies - developers Graham Construction and its nominated electrical contractor, Stothers M&E. Robert added, “We came to a commercial agreement with Stothers M&E, after being asked to cost a fire detection and alarm (FD&A) solution for each phase of the development. We chose the Gent product range because of its quality and reliability, its flexibility of programming and ultimately its ability to meet all of the requirements of the latest British Standards.
“We were also highly confident that the Gent technology would play a pivotal role in tackling the false alarms issue.” The FD&A solution was designed according to the specific uses of each room within the new buildings. In the student bedrooms, Gent’s renowned S-Quad multi sensors were installed, which are capable of detecting the products of combustion such as heat, smoke and carbon monoxide. The devices use patented dual optical scatter technology to enhance smoke detection. This allows it to be configured to filter specific risks such as steam and dust, resulting in significantly reduced false alarms. The S-Quad’s inherent flexibility means it can be programmed to suit specific site applications. Different sensitivity states are set to incorporate combinations of optical, dual optical, heat and CO sensing elements. For instance, in the accommodation bedrooms, S4-911-ST-
VO units were installed utilising carbon monoxide, dual optical smoke and heat detection technology in the same sensor to provide the optimum means of detecting a real fire whilst greatly reducing the risk of false alarms. Robert continued, “Gent provided the design team with an S-Quad detector selection tool. This allowed the design team to select not only the best device for each application but also the optimum state that each device should be set to during commissioning. “Whether it is in a bedroom or kitchen, the optimum state can be selected and the system will be able to differentiate its response to real fires, and identify the culprits of regular false alarms such as steam or aerosol sprays. Above all, the system is proving to be highly effective. The university has a system it can trust in and instances of false alarms have been dramatically reduced.”

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
SMART MONITORING IS THE INTELLIGENT WAY TO PROTECT YOUR SYSTEMS AND REDUCE ENERGY COSTS…
Enhanced power protection from Bender
I
n power supply sectors - such as data centres, healthcare, rail and marine - maintenance managers are faced with unpredictable threats of unplanned increases in power consumption, interruption to power supplies and system downtime. Protecting systems can be improved simply, if organisations are aware of the risks and use equipment which is able to provide early warning or immediate notification when problems arise. Linetraxx Power Quality Monitoring (PQM) units from Bender UK mitigate these risks and provide the ability to predict and prevent problems, while also reducing costs and avoiding issues caused by socalled ‘dirty’ power systems suffering from interference. They are designed to meet the needs of customers who can’t afford failures, and are available alongside Bender’s Residual Current Monitoring (RCM) units and advanced online earth fault location systems, offering a complete solution to deliver robust and stable power systems. By employing Bender PQM units, users can ensure high availability and a power supply free from interference. Regulations require overload detection for the neutral conductor if an excessive load is anticipated due to harmonics, and it should ensure that a protective device trips out, thereby protecting the neutral conductor. But, this safety measure simply moves the

problem elsewhere – resulting in reduced availability due to frequent downtime.
POWER QUALITY MONITORING Bender’s monitoring equipment enables early detection of a potentially dangerous situation – allowing enough time to correct the problem without the need to shut down equipment. Power quality monitoring is particularly effective when combined with RCMs which detects degradation in the level of insulation in an installation or component. Bender’s PQM device also acts as an energy meter while checking the system quality, determining the energy consumption per cost centre and reducing high overhead costs. The dual function of monitoring energy consumption and energy quality helps to reduce energy costs while at the same time delivering high availability of supply. Combining Bender’s RCM and PQM units provides comprehensive protection for electrical supply systems in terms of safety and efficiency. RCM delivers continuous monitoring of the residual current to reduce the risk of fire, while PQM signals overloads due to power quality issues. RCM also ensures that power installations maintain good EMC characteristics – with no stray protective conductor currents – to deliver trouble-free operation and high availability. Energy management and PQM in one device and one software application enables qualified evaluation of the measures implemented and value delivered in terms of shutdowns avoided. Structural detail is a crucial element for effective energy management and cost control in a complex installation because energy use by each cost centre and each different device must be identified.
“Combining Bender’s RCM and PQM units provides comprehensive protection for electrical supply systems.” PQM and Energy Measurement devices can identify individual faults only if the system area monitored is clearly defined. In a typical system a Bender PEM 735 monitors the quality of the voltage for the supply, delivering high resolution logging through measurement of transients, flicker and harmonic components. The PEM 5 series offers advanced power quality and revenue-accurate measurements, high-resolution waveform recording capabilities, comprehensive data logging with a 4MB log memory, high speed data recording, setpoint alarms, extensive I/O and standard dual RS-485 ports and Modbus protocol support. PEM 3 series compact universal measuring devices are positioned to replace energy meters and represent cost centres. This effectively creates an energy management system to control overhead costs for electrical power. This type of monitoring system configuration ensures quick and straightforward analysis to locate power quality phenomena which may put the installation at risk All measured data is collected, filtered and evaluated at a central point and can now be displayed on the Bender CP700 Condition Monitor. training electrical magazine’s dedicated training section looks at the IMPLICATIONS of amendment 3 and how to keep your training up-to-date... WITH AMENDMENT 3 TAKING EFFECT FROM THE START OF JULY, CONTRACTORS NEED TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE FULLY AWARE OF THE NEW CHANGES IN WIRING REGULATIONS…
Are you ready for Amendment 3?
N
ICEIC is reminding contractors that all electrical installations designed after June 30 are to comply with BS 7671:2008 incorporating Amendment 3:2015 The IET Wiring Regulations. The new standard was issued on January 1 this year, with contractors given a six-month transition period to get up-to-speed with the changes. The amendment, now in a yellow book, contains many new changes and requirements to the way electrical installations should be constructed. Alan Wells, Technical and Standards Director at Certsure, which operates the NICEIC and ELECSA brands, said, “It is important that all contractors are aware of the changes and what they might mean to them when carrying out electrical installation work. Failure to adhere to the new standards could result in legal action if the work is deemed not to comply with the revised standard. “It is also a requirement for all NICEIC registered contractors to hold a copy of the current wiring regulations after June 30, 2015, and demonstrate that they are conversant with the changes introduced by the amendments at their next assessment visit after this date.”

RCD protection module - Electrak Intersoc-R desk power system
“Until now, the practice of omitting RCD protection on some sockets has put health and safety at risk.”

As the latest amends to the IET Wiring Regulations come into effect, Steve Marr, an expert in power distribution at Legrand, is calling on designers to make sure they are aware of the changes and to ensure they comply. “The latest amendment reinforces the requirement for RCDs in nondomestic environments, making it harder for designers to omit the use of RCDs from installations,” said Steve. “From July 1, the designer must produce a risk assessment highlighting if RCD protection is unnecessary in an application and to justify the reasoning for this decision. If an incident occurs, as a result of the omission of RCD protection, the risk assessment could be used in a court of law. “Until now, the practice of omitting RCD protection on some sockets has put health and safety at risk, partly as a result of some ambiguous terminology that stated RCDs could be omitted if the socket outlet was to be used ‘under the supervision of skilled or instructed persons’. “Needless to say, the unnecessary risk that this poses clearly highlights the need for change – ensuring safety
as paramount. “While ‘nuisance tripping’ can be an inconvenience, it often stems from having too much electrical equipment supported by one RCD. Good design should see socket outlets connected to an RCD that serves a small number of sockets or equipment - ensuring that the earth leakage is kept within tolerance and therefore unwanted tripping is avoided. “In short, the potential consequences of not designing and installing RCDs, far outweighs the initial upfront cost and potential trip risk. The new amendment is a welcome addition, enforcing the requirement for RCDs in all non-domestic applications. With a greater emphasis on a detailed risk assessment, and with responsibility falling on to designers, electrical safety can be greater assured.” NICEIC stocks a full range of updated Third Amendment products. Contractors can purchase all updated publications, including the new British Standard, NICEIC site guide and the full series of guidance notes. Visit www.niceicdirect.com for more information. Many local employers are contending with the prospect of a talent gap caused by the continuing decline in apprenticeship training…
Electrical contractors face skills shortage
T
he recession appears to have taken its toll on the construction industry. In the case of the electrical building services sector, young people appear to have become ‘switched off’. Lewis Darragh, Chairman of Electrical Training Trust, commented, “Low cost, no cost schemes and programmes have eroded the brand of apprenticeship training in our sector. The fall out of this continues to become increasingly evident as employers struggle to attract the brightest and the best of the school leaving population.” The looming recruitment problem is not unique to the electrical sector. It would appear that suitable and well equipped young people are overlooking the golden opportunity of a solid career, based on traditional vocational craft trades. The National Union of Students claims the apprentice minimum wage of £2.73 an hour for 16-18-year-olds, and 19-year-olds in their first year is “exploitative” and not enough to cover basic living expenses. Some employers have sought to get round this by subsidising alternative schemes with cash-in-hand payments.
Alistair McDonald, NRC, lends a hand to Braid apprentice James Reid.
In either case, the approach appears to be undermining the ability of the industry to attract and retain the next generation of young electricians. Other sectors are effectively outbidding the electrical industry for Northern Ireland’s most talented young people. For many of these, a trade apprenticeship is the second or perhaps third choice. The perception amongst young people today is that IT, Media, A-Levels and other Further and Higher Education courses are a better way to go. The anticipated shortfall of tradesmen and woman in the local construction industry comes as no surprise to Unite the Union. Jackie Pollock, Deputy Regional Secretary for Unite, said, “The effects of the recession have clearly reduced the confidence and interest of school leavers in recent years. Recovery of the economy is closely linked to the fortunes of the construction sector, so it’s vital that the next generation of talented young people come forward and take advantage of the emerging and improving conditions.” The Northern Ireland Electrical Training Trust’s ‘2015 Survey of Employers’ has highlighted that
the demand for new apprentices is unlikely to be met due to the lack of available and suitably qualified young people. An unexpected challenge appears to have arisen for local employers. Apprenticeships are on offer, the demand is in place yet the interest and uptake by school leavers and other young people between the ages of 16-24 has yet to materialise.
The effects of the recession have clearly reduced the confidence and interest of school leavers in recent years.
Action for Employers • Be prepared to pay – The national minimum wage may not be enough! The JIB rate for a first year apprentice is £4.60p/ hr. • Be prepared to attract – If you were a young person would you work for your business? Is your business apprentice friendly? • Be prepared to interview – Seek maximum qualifications, use structured interviews, ask open questions, obtain references, determine suitability and keep written records.

Partnership between BMC and ETT gets the go ahead!
N ETT Course Coordinator Peter Moore tests Strabane Electrics apprentice Sean Connolly.
Apprentice and industry training in Armagh
E
TT has just completed the first year of training at the new Armagh Apprentice and Industry Training Centre. The doors of the centre opened on the Loughgall Road by welcoming 40 apprentices during September 2014. Based at the Armagh Business Centre, ETT continues to focus on the employer-led training model. Peter Moore, Course Co-ordinator, said, “It’s been a challenging and rewarding year for our team. We’ve worked hard to establish a first class training facility aimed at meeting the needs of local employers. Keeping the employer informed and updated on the progress and achievement of their apprentice/s is a vital part of our mission.” During the period, ETT apprentices have been undertaking the City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 2357 electrical installation programme. Apprentices are required to develop knowledge and hand skills matched to the needs of current industry practice. Centre Manager, Chris Walker, commented, “We are committed to supporting employers as they seek to strengthen and build their business interests with an authentic and up-to-date approach to apprenticeship training. Schemes and placement programmes have clearly not worked or served the local industry very well. So, we remain committed to the tried, and tested approach of the traditional apprenticeship.” The centre is dedicated solely to electrical installation training for the local building services industry. Bright lecture rooms, well equipped workshops, excellent IT facilities and a comfortable and clean student breakout area have provided employers with an excellent industry-led solution. Employers planning to recruit an apprentice from the districts around Armagh, are asked to contact ETT. As a not-for-profit charitable trust overseen by a board of voluntary employers, it remains dedicated to improving quality and raising standards in the industry through accredited apprenticeship training.
orthern Ireland’s largest Further Education establishment, Belfast Metropolitan College, has confirmed plans to renew the longstanding apprenticeship partnership with ETT for 2015. Speaking on behalf of the ECA NI Branch, Chairman Michael Dennison, said, “We view this agreement as tangible and positive evidence of employer engagement. We commend BMC for their willingness to facilitate the unique interests of the local industry through this valuable partnership with ETT.”
Course Coordinator, Ian Thompson (BMC), instructs ETT apprentices.
NRC and ETT prep for 2015 intake
T
he Northern Regional College’s (NRC) Ballymena and Newtownabbey campuses are set to welcome an anticipated increase in the number of ETT apprentices during September 2015. NRC and ETT will once again be working closely on meeting the needs of the local industry. Joanne Croskery, Director, JBE Services, said, “The arrangement between ETT and NRC continues to provide employers with a real stakehold in its own apprenticeship. Local employers have undoubtedly benefitted from the efficiency and joint effort of the employer-led approach.”
Curriculum Area Manager, Andrew McKeegan, points ETT apprentices in the right direction.

ETT offers City & Guilds Experienced Worker Route
T
he Experienced Worker Route (EWR) provides a pathway to formal recognition as an electrician. If you employ someone who has not quite achieved the official grade requirements, then the EWR may be the way to go. Many employers make good use of experienced and skilled workers who are underqualified. No laws have been broken, but underlying concerns often exist in the mind of employers who make use of underqualified employees. As client organisations continue to increase scrutiny of the supply chain via PQQs, contractors will likewise continue to come under pressure to demonstrate accredited competency of their workforce. The qualification has been designed by City & Guilds and JIB, and approved by the industry, for the purpose of awarding ‘Electrician’ status to those who can demonstrate appropriate experience and who complete the new (City & Guilds 2356-99) award. Experience is the key word. The qualification is not suitable for new entrants. Assessors will want to learn about your workplace experience. Typical questions that you will be asked include what types of materials and equipment have you worked with and how long have you worked in the industry. You may also be required to provide appropriate supporting evidence to verify your experience.
Training success A snapshot of just some of the recent course attendees…
Lee Mason, McGrath Bros, who completed the C&G 2377-22 PAT exam.
James Bell, Oasis Retail, who completed the C&G 2377-22 PAT exam.
Gareth McConnell, Electrical Testing NI, who completed the C&G 2377-22 PAT exam.
How will I be assessed? 1 Achievement Measurement 2 Test (AM2) – This is a three-day competency test comprising practical skills and knowledge assessment or equivalent. 2 Inspection & Testing at Level 3 (comprising of practical City & Guilds 2394 or 2395). 3 17th Edition Accreditation (City & Guilds 2382) or equivalent. 4 Electronic portfolio of evidence – This is used to gather evidence derived from site observations, professional discussions and site diaries. The typical activity associated with this section will oblige the candidate to ensure that a suitable range of work environments and tasks related to the NVQ Level 3 requirements are assessed. The minimum period for the NVQ Level 3 assessment to be accomplished may not be less than 12 weeks. Candidates must be able to provide evidence of appropriate electrical installation work that is no older than two years prior to the date of application. This assessment route is designed solely for those experienced persons who are/have been working in the industry as practicing electricians for a minimum of five years. They must also wdemonstrate competence to the industry standards at Level 3 and in line with the current edition of the IET wiring regulations (BS7671). Achieving the award is based on points 1-4 (above) and, for guidance purposes, the cumulative costs will range from £1,500-£3,500, depending on the assessments that are required. ETT is able to offer flexible ‘pay as you go terms’ and anyone wishing to know more about becoming fully qualified in 2015 can contact Chris Walker, Lead Assessor for EWR, at ETT on 028 2565 0750.

JIB HELPS EXPERIENCED ELECTRICIANS QUALIFY FOR AN ECS GOLD CARD WITH THE MATURE CANDIDATE ASSESSMENT…
Going for gold
I
f you’ve got many years’ experience working in the electrical industry but have never completed an apprenticeship or the NVQ Level 3, there’s now a way you can get formally assessed and meet the requirements for an ECS Gold Card from the JIB. The JIB Mature Candidate Assessment recognises existing industry experience and takes into account the work you have been carrying out to date. When you are successful you gain the industry Level 3 qualification which meets the requirements for a Gold Card application. It works like this: 1) Register with a training provider who offers the Mature Candidate Assessment (found at www.ecscard.org.uk/maturecandidate-assessment). 2) An independent assessor will talk to you about how your existing skills and experience can be used to meet the qualification requirements.

3) Site assessments can be arranged so that any gaps in training can be identified - often all that is additionally needed is to carry out the AM2 assessment. Typically you must have completed the relevant electro-technical theory training/technical certificate and then worked within the industry for several years. This programme is not for new entrants, trainees, or people who have just finished their training. You will need to provide sufficient evidence of current site work, and previous work via witness testimony, to meet the qualification requirements. If you completed an industry-recognised apprenticeship - even if it was a long time ago - you can apply for an ECS Gold Card (in the same occupational discipline) without undertaking this assessment, providing
you have proof of your apprenticeship completion, such as signed papers/deeds. “With this new assessment route we’re helping electricians who have many years’ industry experience and technical qualifications, but have so far been unable to be formally recognised at NVQ level,” said David Thomas of the JIB. “Now, these people can not only have their skills properly accredited, but also gain access to a gold Electrician ECS card in order to open up more work opportunities and demonstrate their competence to the industry Level 3 standard.” W: www.ecscard.org.uk/mature-candidateassessment

The new Speed Punch System reduces operation time when punching a hole in mild steel, plastic and aluminium sheets up to 3.5mm thick – by up to three times…
Greenlee launches superfast sheet metal hole-making system
U
sers of sheet metal hole punching systems will be familiar with the benefits of using these products and of the various technological advances made in recent years. Improvements in hydraulic pulling tools and the move from foot and hand pumps to modern, lightweight, battery-operated solutions have allowed for faster results and a more efficient process. The new Speed Punch system has gone a step further by eliminating the process of threading the punch onto and off the draw stud. Instead, a threadless draw stud and robust ‘Speed Lock’ clamp are

utilised, making assembly and disassembly simpler and up to three times faster than conventional punching systems. Speed Punch is available for ISO sizes 16-63 and is compatible with all existing pulling tools. The punch and die have been sized to eliminate the need for spacers, requiring fewer parts, and without threads, there’s less chance of errors. When combined with a battery hydraulic punch driver, for example LS50L-flex, it provides the fastest punching system on the market today according to Klauke, allowing the user to perform more holes in less time than
previously achievable. For square and rectangular hole punches, the same results can be achieved with Speed Nut. This only requires a new draw stud and Speed Nut which works with your existing punches, bringing the user the same benefits in installation time. CIOB NI members Neil McStravick and Ruairi Lavery from Farrans Construction provide ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE WITH an update and overview of the key stakeholders and the process being adopted within Northern Ireland in relation to BIM Implementation…
BIM - who can help? T he momentum of BIM implementation within Northern Ireland has been building and will continue to gather pace over the next 12 months in preparation for the mandated date of April 1, 2016. Whether you are just starting out on your BIM journey or are well into the process, you will still have questions – but where do you turn for help? Here are just some of the main stakeholders in Northern Ireland –
The NI BIM Hub Chaired by Mark McKane from the Ulster University and formed in 2013, the NI BIM Hub Steering Group is at the forefront of BIM Implementation in Northern Ireland. It is the organisation in Northern Ireland that is responsible for ensuring the dissemination of the most up-to-date and consistent information on the UK Government Level 2 BIM programme as well as providing a local feedback mechanism to the Government BIM Task Group at grass roots level. The NI BIM Hub is there to address all construction professionals with information about BIM to assist with the wider implementation and should be the first point of call for anyone wanting to know more about BIM. Within the last couple of months there has been a fresh intake of members with the total number of principal members rising to 15 with 6 additional rotating members. The membership consists of a broad cross-section of the industry, including representatives from CEF NI, CPD, various

1. Consult with NI Government Departments, their Centres of Procurement Excellence (COPEs) and Industry on best practice guidance for adoption of BIM Level 2 by 2016, 2. Prepare and publish the Procurement Guidance Note (PGN) for the adoption of BIM Level 2 by 2016. The publication of the Procurement Guidance Note (PGN) will be another significant milestone in terms of BIM Implementation in Northern Ireland. The development of the PGN has been ongoing via regular BIM Task & Finish Group meetings, regular industry engagement events in conjunction with the NI BIM Hub and consultation with BIM4LG NI to ensure a consistent approach. The planned date for publishing the draft PGN is mid-2015 which will be followed by a series of public consultations with the Procurement Practitioner’s Group (PPG), Construction Industry Group for Northern Ireland (CIGNI), BIM for Local Government (BIM4LG NI) and the Procurement Board with publication expected later in 2015. Perhaps the most significant measure of the progress and commitment to BIM implementation in Northern Ireland (and an indication of what may be contained in the PGN) is captured by the BIM Task & Finish Group having recently published its intention to mandate BIM on all appropriate (subject to a value test) construction projects which are procured by a COPE which have an above EU

threshold value (£4.3M) from the 1st April 2016. This statement of intent also gives an indication of what main contractors, subcontractors and construction consultants who intend to tender for publically procured construction contracts need to be doing now if they are interested in bidding for future Government construction contracts. This includes: • • • •
Adopt BIM Level 2 Work Practices within their organisations Develop training for their staff in the use of BIM authoring software Implement the methodology for delivery of projects to BIM Level 2 maturity in accordance with the Publically Available Specifications (PAS) 1192 series and Promote collaborative working practices within their design and supply teams
BIM4LG NI BIM4LG NI was established in the summer of 2014 to provide a dedicated focus group within local government in relation to the implementation of BIM Level 2. Local councils are not COPEs and are not subject to the same public procurement scrutiny as central government unless those projects are funded in part or wholly by a central government or European department or body which is quite often the case. In this instance that funded project will traditionally involve input from CPD and be subject to public procurement legislation and CPD policies. BIM4LG NI had been
meeting on monthly basis and liaising with both the NI BIM Hub and also the BIM Task and Finish Group. This included industry engagement events to try and develop the implementation of BIM into local government in line with CPD to ensure that both central and local government adopted a common approach to implementing BIM Level 2. Some industry experts are stating that the implementation of BIM Level 2 is a bigger change within the construction industry than the move from the drawing board to CAD. If that is the case, then it is safe to assume that the process of Level 2 BIM Implementation will run far beyond April 1, 2016, but it is clear that the process is well underway in Northern Ireland. Early adopter projects are already in the public realm and it may not be long until PQQs will be asking for evidence of three projects in the last three years which have been fully level 2 BIM compliant. If you work within the construction industry in Northern Ireland and want to know more in relation to how BIM may affect you now or in the near future, you can find out more at the http://www.bimtaskgroup.org/bim-regionalhub-northern-ireland/ or through Linkedin.

y law, all employers in the UK have to automatically enrol their employees into a qualifying workplace pension scheme. BlueSky administers and manages the BlueSky Pension Scheme, a non-profit arrangement, which is one of the largest MasterTrusts in the UK. Any employer is able to join this Trust-based, multiple employer, auto enrolment qualifying workplace pension scheme. No fees or commissions are paid to any party, and BlueSky welcomes any employer in the UK to benefit from its economies of scale, high levels of governance and advanced investment offering, which includes the latest in pension developments. The scheme has a governed structure, including a Trustee Board, investment consultant, independent chairman and investment strategist, who work alongside teams of administrators (all using the latest administration system and undertaking professional pensions’ qualifications). All employers in the UK must comply with Auto Enrolment legislation and have been assigned a ‘Staging Date’ (further information on staging dates can be found in the Auto Enrolment section of the BlueSky website). To date, this has only

affected the larger and medium employers, but since January 2015, it also affects employers with under 58 employees. To help guide employers through the process, the experts from BlueSky advise employers to do the following: • Nominate a contact • Know your staging date • Prepare a plan • Review pension arrangements • Check process and software • Know your workforce • Communicate with staff • Arrange a Declaration of Compliance with the Pensions Regulator. The secret to successful compliance is preparation and keeping the process simple. The key to this, according to the experts from BlueSky, is to assess payroll processes and existing pension arrangements, and to start investigations six months before your staging date. To help it all run smoothly, BlueSky has developed a complete Real Time Auto Enrolment (RAE) system, which is fully compliant. This system assesses and communicates with all employees, and includes online opt in and out tools. The
package sits alongside the administration of any arrangement (TPA, MasterTrust etc), and fees are based on the number of employees working for each employer.
CRYSTAL DRAWDOWN The requirement for members retiring from a Defined Contribution (DC) scheme to take an annuity (pension) from their fund will be relaxed from April. In light of this, BlueSky has recently launched Crystal Drawdown - the new choice for pension scheme members, replacing outdated and poor value annuity options at retirement. With the requirements for greater flexibility and the Guidance Guarantee in mind, Crystal Drawdown will be available to any employer in the UK who can participate in the Crystal Trust - a single solution, giving peace of mind that employees can benefit from a ground-breaking retirement income strategy which is designed, managed and administered by leaders in the UK pensions market.

Great Island plant is fired up
T
runs on a 400 tonne gas turbine and a 400 tonne transformer, as well as a 380 tonne generator and a 150 tonne steam turbine. The operations and maintenance team who work in the new plant were assembled long before the 2014 dry run. Station Manager, Padraig Dunleavy, said, “Training was of course paramount; staff were recruited in 2013 so we had a two year lead-in period of training and preparation. Eighteen members of staff from the old plant moved to the CCGT while the rest were recruited externally.” Operated by 42 people in total, SSE has provided work at the plant for over 1,700 people since construction began in March 2012. It may be half its size but the new plant is nearly twice as powerful as the old 240MW plant and will, says SSE, save Irish energy customers more than €50million per year. The new plant uses the latest technology to ensure maximum efficiency; gas is combined with air and ignited through a combustion process to rotate a gas turbine. The waste heat that’s generated is used to convert water into high Taoiseach Enda Kenny (second left) with Directors of the Great Island plant during a visit to the Wexford facility. pressure steam which is
he cleanest and most efficient natural gas power plant in the country, the Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) station at Great Island, started generating energy for export to Ireland’s national grid for the first time on April 17. Built over a 30-month period on a 3,989sqm site overlooking the Ballyhack and Cheekpoint estuary, the CCGT has replaced the old 240MW heavy oil burning facility which was first commissioned almost 50 years ago. It is now poised to power over half-a-million Irish homes and is one of the country’s most efficient power plants. In September 2014, SSE engineers along with project teams from lead contractor DCI and turbine manufacturer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, successfully fired-up and synchronised the new gas turbine to the grid for the first time. The new plant

used to rotate a steam turbine. Any residual steam is converted back into water and recycled through the system. The two turbines combined are attached to a generator via a single shaft which generates the electricity. In addition, information is sent from the control room to the Mitsubishi technical centre in Japan in real time. “Every effort has been made to ensure the plant is environmentally friendly. We use cooling water from the river, so we’re operating in a very high thermal cycle efficiency; we’re actually 59% thermally efficient. That means we get a very efficient use of the energy and therefore very low carbon density per megawatt hour that we produce.” Built to last for years to come, the CGT significantly decarbonises electricity generation in the all-island Single Electricity Market. Commenting on the plant, Gregor Alexander, Lead Director for Ireland and Finance Director at SSE, said, “At SSE we’re proud of the difference we are making to the future of Ireland’s energy supply. The completion of Great Island CCGT brings to over €2 billion the total investment made by SSE in Ireland since 2008 – that investment is creating jobs, sustaining employment, driving competition and greening our economy.”

SPIE working with NIE in network renovation

PIE has secured two framework contracts with Northern Ireland Electricity. The independent European leader in multitechnical services will assist NIE in the refurbishment of the country’s electrical distribution and transmission networks. The transmission contract, the first of the two longterm assignments, involves renovation and new build works on Northern Ireland’s high voltage network up to, and including, 275kv, and is expected to finish in early 2019. The second distribution framework contract requires SPIE to restore and replace the distribution wood pole network, up to and including 33kv. The work will take place between now and February 2018, with the potential for a two-year extension. SPIE will initially supply 40 linesmen to work across both projects, with a view to increasing this number to 70 in order to complete the current programme of works. Jonathan Walsh, Contracts

Manager at NIE, said, “We first worked with SPIE in 2009 and since then, our business relationship has gone from strength to strength. They have completed a number of projects with us, from distribution and transmission to assistance with storm damage repairs.” Mike Snee, Managing Director at SPIE, commented, “It’s vital to us that we have a strong and progressive relationship with NIE. The electricity distribution industry operates in a regulated environment and, as such, there are stringent requirements for the service providers to deliver a safe, efficient and customer orientated service to the end user – the general public. SPIE endeavours to meet these requirements head-on and is proud to be participating in this work.” In addition to these projects, there will be the future opportunities for SPIE to pitch for stand-alone green-economy assignments such as wind farm lines. n the latest development relating to the North-South interconnector project, EirGrid has submitted a planning application to An Bord Pleanála, kicking off a 10-week period of public consultation. The overall interconnector stretches 138km from Batterstown, Co Meath, through Cavan and Monaghan to Turleenan, County Tyrone. Proposals for the new interconnector have provoked severe criticism from local groups who want the power lines put underground. Those opposed to the project say EirGrid has shown contempt for genuine public concerns and that the application will result in confrontation and conflict. Speaking in the last issue of Electrical Magazine, spokesperson for EirGrid, David Martin, said that while underground cables using HVDC technology would be feasible, their use on this project would introduce higher costs to the consumer. “They also wouldn’t facilitate future grid connections and reinforcements along the route; this just doesn’t comply with best utility practice.” In support of the project, EirGrid says the new 400kV interconnector will increase the capacity and the reliability of interconnection between the two networks. It will allow the two independent networks to operate together as if they were one system. This increase in interconnection capacity will effectively eliminate current restrictions in cross border support in the event of a shortage of electricity in one jurisdiction. EirGrid also says that operating the two networks as if they were one system will bring cost savings for all electricity consumers as larger electricity systems can be operated more efficiently than smaller ones. However, Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Brendan Smith has said it’s “extremely disappointing” that EirGrid plans to proceed with the North-South interconnector without placing any of the power lines underground and has called on the Minister Alex White to “immediately clarify the Government’s position and to direct EirGrid to bring forward options to underground the project.” The application documentation, including the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Natura Impact Statement (NIS), is available for public viewing at www.eirgridnorthsouthinterconnector.ie.

Teresa Smith, Director of Finance and Operations, Ormiston Victory Academy, and Project Manager for the new building, said, “Dodd’s provided us with a number of examples of trunking and we were very clear that we needed a product that was robust, tamper-proof and cost effective. “Equally, I wanted the trunking to look part of the room and work with our décor. Marshall-Tufflex’s Twin165 trunking was selected for all of these reasons and we are delighted with our choice,” she said. “Marshall-Tufflex came out best when we looked at different cable management options and it provided value for money compared with the competition,” added Alan Hensby. Swiftclip significantly reduces cable management installation times
L
egrand, a world-leading manufacturer of cable management systems has recently launched a new innovative cable management component, developed to offer a fast-fit alternative to the traditional nut and bolt. The new Swiftclip, which forms part of the UK’s market-leading Swifts cable tray range, has been designed with speed in mind. Requiring no tools during installation, the Swiftclip not only significantly reduces the number of components required, but also ensures installation times of at least four times faster than a nut and bolt solution. The Swiftclip is compatible with the existing Swifts medium (MRF) and heavy duty (SRF) cable tray systems, is load-tested to BS EN 61537 and provides earth continuity without the need for additional components. In addition, the innovative cable management component is available for internal pre-galvanised and external post galvanised applications. Connecting the Swiftclip couldn’t be easier. Step 1: Initial set-up Ensure the cable tray supports are

placed in the relevant location before you begin. Top tip: When designing a cable management installation, cable ladders, cable trays and their supports should be strong enough to meet the total load requirements of the cable management system. Ancillary items, such as light fittings or junction boxes, should be taken into consideration as well as the cables and any predicted future additions.
starting with the leg nearest to the tray wall. Repeat the process on the other side of the tray, fitting the clip in the opposite direction. Ensure the head and feet of the Swiftclip are clamping through the tray and coupler and that the Swiftclip spans across the joint. Top tip: Swiftclip can be used to not only connect length to length, or length to fitting, but can also be used to secure the bed of the tray to the supports (trapeze hangers/cantilever arms etc).
Step 2 Place a straight length of cable tray across the supports; ideally the joint should be a quarter of the span of the cable tray from the support for maximum strength. Place the next straight length of cable tray across the next supports and position the coupler centrally over the tray joint.
Before any cable management installation, it is recommended that your chosen system has a full range of accessories to choose from so that you can select the relevant brackets, fixings and couplers most appropriate for the installation, from one source. Take the time to work with your supplier to ensure you specify the correct amount of fittings, brackets and fixings in order to prevent delays on site. In addition, ensure you have all the necessary health and safety equipment, nylon gloves are highly recommended for any cable management installation. CLYNDER KEEPS UP WITH MARKET TREND FOR EXTRA FLEXIBLE CABLING AND LOW SMOKE CABLES …
Highly flexible tri-rated panel wiring from Clynder
A
s panel builders drive toward smaller and lighter panels and increasingly look to save space and reduce panel weight, one way is to use more flexible cables, enabling lengths to be cut shorter in order to reduce space, weight and the cost of valuable copper. In response to this demand, Clynder Cables has developed its Superflex range – a selection of highly flexible tri-rated cables to accompany its standard range. The Superflex series comes in sizes from 10mm² up to 240mm², cables, which are so flexible it is possible to tie a knot in the 240mm², one of the

largest sizes. These Superflexes use Class 6 conductors – the diameter is the same as the regular Class 5 conductor used in the standard trirated cables, but the wire strands are smaller and there are a much greater number, improving the bend radius. Both Superflex and regular Trirated cabling are also available as double insulated, for use in instances where some mechanical protection
is required but cable trays are not practical or available. As the market also increasingly looks for cables with a lower fume emission in fire situations, there is also a growing demand for BS7211 compliant cables, such as Clynder’s 2491B cable. Clynder Cables’ products always guarantee the same colour consistency, with bright, deep colour shades which do not fade and do not vary from one batch to the next. oneywell Environmental Combustion & Controls (ECC) is a leading manufacturer of wiring devices, cabling management, circuit protection and power distribution systems, and serves both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The company, which manufacturers out of the UK, was previously operated in Northern Ireland by Bob McAteer, Regional Sales Manager, who retired from his role in November 2014. Since Bob’s departure from the company, the Southern team has taken on responsibility of Northern Ireland, and is putting more resources into this region than ever before to ensure it delivers the most innovative and efficient products to customers. Aidan Hayes, National Sales Manager, is pleased with the company’s performance in Northern Ireland since this change. “We’re extremely pleased with our progression in Northern Ireland in the past eight months. We have several projects in the pipeline and we have made our presence felt within the electrical industry by continuing to strengthen our relationships with contractors and consulting engineers,” says Aidan. He continues, “I believe our team’s collaboration and our experience have helped to shape and strengthen the Honeywell brand across the whole of Ireland.” According to Simon McCarthy, Business Development Manager for the Republic of Ireland and Northern

Ireland, Honeywell ECC ran a much bigger operation across Ireland before the recession and the team is continuing its efforts to recover to this position. “We’ve taken steps to ensure we remain competitive and continue to meet our customers’ demands. We have changed the route of our deliveries from our UK base to come directly to our distributors in Ireland. This has been a big change for the business, but we have had the support of major stockists across Ireland, so we’re in an excellent position to supply for the market,” says Simon. Colm O’Regan, the Regional Manager, who looks after the west coast from Mayo to Cork, believes Honeywell ECC has the competitive edge to continue leading in the market. Colm says, “I’m seeing confidence returning to the sector. It’s still an extremely competitive market but we have the products and solutions to remain the leaders in the market. We are continuing to take market share and we’re positive about the future.” The company continues to develop innovative and competitive products to remain ahead of the market. One of Honeywell’s latest products launched across Ireland is evohome Wi-Fi, a wireless thermostatic control system for a domestic heating system. evohome Wi-Fi allows the user to zone heating in a house, room by room, radiator by radiator. The whole system is connected via Wi-Fi to the user’s phone or tablet. The energy efficient product is targeted at the
domestic market, but can also be used commercially in offices and nursing homes. Moreover, the MK Electric brand recently integrated its USB charging capabilities into six of its iconic wiring device ranges, including Logic Plus, Metalclad Plus, Albany Plus, Edge, Aspect and the newly introduced Elements range. The Integrated Sockets include Dynamic Device Recognition (DDR); the ability to detect charging nuances in the device and its appetite for power. DDR is unique to each USB port, which means that different manufacturers’ devices on both iOS and Android can be charged simultaneously without any impairment to the other. For the ultimate user experience, each port can also charge different types of devices, such as smartphones and tablets, at the same time. The MK USB Integrated Sockets offer a simple but powerful advantage for airports, hotels, universities, schools, offices and retail outlets for quick and convenient charging. They are available through all electrical wholesalers in Ireland. David Lee, Project Sales Engineer of MK Electric and Ex-Or says, “We are committed to delivering safe, reliable and quality products to our customers, and we are incredibly proud of our success across the whole of Ireland.” T: (RoI) 01 429 6500 or (NI) 00353 1 429 6500 E: MKIrelandOrders@Honeywell.com W: www.mkelectric.com

DR JEREMY HODGE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE AT THE BRITISH APPROVALS SERVICE FOR CABLES (BASEC), DISCUSSES THE IMPACT OF E-COMMERCE IN THE ELECTRICAL SECTOR…
Buying cables online -
convenient and cost-effective or a purchasing minefield?
E
-commerce websites are increasingly impacting the way electrical contractors are making purchasing decisions. Many of the major electrical wholesalers now have good e-commerce sites integrated with their branch networks. However, as with all online purchases, the buyer needs to exercise caution and use their knowledge of the industry to make an informed choice. Most electrical contractors will have a good idea of the cost parameters of the reputable cable brands. If an online price for a well-known brand seems too good to be true, it probably is. Many products sold on online auction sites seem to be the real thing. There are claims of their quality with the relevant standard numbers they conform to, third party approvals and well-known brands - if these are genuine then we applaud the traders for making this information available. Unfortunately, it would be virtually impossible to verify these claims without seeing the product, its markings and certifications. Don’t assume that the photograph they have used is of the product you will receive. There are also many examples where claims are not made at all and just the cable type is listed. In this case, these cables should be treated with extreme caution – they may not be what they say they are.
www.elecmagazine.com
DUE DILIGENCE
“We all need to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to the local regulatory authority.”
FOLLOW US ON:
In spite of these risks, there does not seem to be a lack of online activity both in the UK and overseas, especially from sellers in Asia. Some outlets claim products are to international standards and have independent approval but these claims are often couched in vague terms like ‘products can be manufactured or supplied to BS, DIN or IEC standards’, or that they are ‘equivalent’ or ‘relative’ to them. So what can contractors do to ensure that what they are buying is the genuine product? BASEC advises that you use the same due diligence you would when buying from any distributor. However, be especially cautious when it’s a purchase over the Internet by contacting the seller directly and researching the company thoroughly. On the product itself, make sure the cable manufacturer’s brand or name is clearly marked on the cable, as well as the relevant BS, EN or IEC standard the cable was made to. Insist on independent third party approval from a body such as BASEC or HAR and check if the CE mark is shown on the packaging. Also, the key here is traceability. Can you track this cable back through the supply chain if there is an issue? You must buy from a reputable online supplier, one with an address and contact
details that you have checked out. On many online stores you can check their feedback score from previous customers.
THE FUTURE There is no question that online selling is a practical, efficient and a responsive way to sell products to customers, and there are many benefits for the purchaser as long as the cable product they are buying is genuine. In terms of the auction and shopping sites, retail giants are going to some lengths to crack down on fake and counterfeit goods being sold through their e-commerce sites. This is an on-going issue for the entire electrical supply chain so we all need to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to the local regulatory authority. Whether it is online or real world, use sensible caution and only buy and use recognised, approved, certified cable products from reputable outlets. Only deal with manufacturers who can demonstrate they have independent third-party approval for their cable products. OFFER ADDED VALUE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS WITH ENERGY-SAVING HEATING CONTROL FROM TIMEGUARD…
Giving your business a boost
I
f you can find simple and inexpensive ways of reducing your customers’ energy bills, there are good opportunities to win some additional business with every job you do. Simple plug-in timer adapters are still sold in their thousands for DIY use, but professional installers can go a lot further with smarter, hard-wired devices which can be set with switching programmes as simple or as complicated as you need. It’s worth spending a bit of time looking through a catalogue or, in the case of Timeguard, having a look at the boxes, because the packaging tells you everything you need to know at a glance, in words and pictures. With heating control, the key to comfort is to maintain room temperatures within a 0.5°C of the desired temperature, a ‘comfort window’ within which people don’t notice a variation in temperature and feel the need to start ‘fiddling’ with the controls. That accuracy can only be achieved with electronic thermostats, and there are still tens, if not hundreds of thousands of old-style wall ‘stats’ that are ripe for wire replacement. Remember that ‘electronic’ does not have
“There are still tens, if not hundreds of thousands of old-style wall ‘stats’ that are ripe for wire replacement.” to mean ‘complicated’. Some people just want to stick to a simple dial control. So, Timeguard designed an accurate electronic wall thermostat with this familiar style of control alongside more sophisticated models that combine with 24-hour, 7-day and weekday/weekend programming with thermostatic control in one unit. Electronic accuracy of thermostats and time controllers should mean that there is little need to keep adjusting them, but there will always be an odd occasion when people want to leave the heating on a little longer or need a bit more hot water in the tank. That’s where Timeguard’s ingenious boost buttons come into play. At the press of a single button, users can choose from 15 minutes to two hours’ over-ride, after which the controller will turn off again automatically and reset to its usual programme. Timeguard has now also added this feature to a new generation of Economy 7 time switches.
TIME CONTROL Wherever you need an FCU (fused connection unit), you can now provide the added benefit of energy-saving time control within the same single-gang unit. The Timeguard Fused Spur Timer (FST24) for 24-hour programming and the FST77 sevenday model are attractive enough to feature on any wall when positioned so that the large displays and on/off indicator lights can be

clearly seen. Attention to detail means that where wiring from the back is not practicable, there is a simple, replaceable cable knock-out tab to keep cables flush to the wall for conduit connection. Push-buttons enable users to advance the programme whenever required and a boost button gives an extra one or twohour supply for hot water tanks, heaters, office and household equipment etc, with the reassurance that the supply will always switch off again automatically and the devices will revert to their programmed timing. Alternatively, and this is ideal for students, tenants and the elderly, fused boost timers can add a simple boost function to the fused spur, so that the supply is only ever switched on for a controlled, set period. There are countless great ideas for extra business at the wholesalers, but to really take advantage of them and avoid the time cost of having to make a return visit, you need to be able to strike while the iron is hot. So, why not keep a supply of these units in the van? They are all packed in fully illustrated packaging so you can show the householder exactly what they will get, helping you seal the deal there and then. THORN introduces the LED version of PopPack...
PopPack around the world and back again
T
horn Lighting recently launched PopPack LED, the latest addition to its popular PopPack batten range. First produced in 1954, it was a product designed specifically with installers in mind. The name says it all – ‘pop’ (verb: to put or move something somewhere quickly) and ‘pack’ (noun: group, set or collection) - embodying the concept of supplying a complete product ready for a quick installation. The idea of a glass fluorescent tube packed in one box with a fluorescent spine seems so simple today - but in 1954 it looked reckless, with the risk of tubes being broken in transit. However, the PopPack turned fluorescent lighting into a commodity. It was the first ‘pack type’ fluorescent fitting in Britain to be sold lamped and ready to fit. Competitively priced, it transported fluorescent lighting to the reach of many who had previously held off installing it. Remarkably, the ‘PopPacak’ concept has changed very little over the years, but the product has improved greatly with the advances of lighting technology. In 1995 Queen Elizabeth visited the Thorn factory in Spennymoor, County Durham to light the 60 millionth PopPack. Today, Thorn sales department estimates that 75 million PopPacks have been manufactured. Based on these numbers and an individual product length of 5ft (1.5m) it’s believed that 112,500km of PopPacks have been manufactured and sold across the globe enough to cover the earth’s circumference two and a half times over! Chris Jenkins, Electrical Engineer for RDM stated, “During RDM Electrical and Mechanical Services’ 27 years, we have installed a variety of lighting. However,

thanks to its wide range of outputs and attachments, the Thorn PopPack is one of the most versatile. The emergency LED attachment is ideal for retrofit projects. “We have used PopPack in various installations, from new-build to refurbishments, and always found it to be easy to install and maintain - plus it is always aesthetically pleasing. The fact that it has been around for so long is testament to its quality and value for money, coupled with the fact that it is always improving. This is why RDM Electrical and Mechanical Services will continue to install the Thorn PopPack.”
NEW GENERATION So how can you continue to improve on a product that has travelled the world and back again? And what does the new generation offer? PopPack became known for its quick and easy patented installation method, and products were supplied with simple mounting plates for surface mounting or BESA ready. PopPack LED retains these benefits and is supplied with identical fixing and connection points, making it suitable for new and refurbishment projects with convenient point-for-point replacement. As well as the time and cost savings associated with being BESA ready, the product can be supplied through-wired, which substantially reduces installation costs. As the first LED batten in the PopPack range, PopPack LED offers an increase in efficiency (>110Llm/W), reducing energy consumption by up to 67% compared to the traditional fluorescent alternatives. With lumen packages from 3000 to 6500lm, it is suitable for indoor applications such
“We are really excited about the introduction of PopPack LED.” as storage areas, staircases, cellars and garages. Furthermore, the new LED version gains superior glare control and uniformity from a new textured prismatic diffuser. With the introduction of LED, the flicker scenario often found in fluorescent products is eradicated; it also has a special antifly diffuser design to avoid black spots caused by insect ingress throughout the product lifetime, reducing maintenance requirements. Maintenance expense and time is further reduced with the LED version, as the light engine is manufactured to run for 50,000 hours at L70; this substantially decreases the cost and time spent on lamp replacements and general maintenance. PopPack LED has a 4000K colour temperature and a very high colour rendering index of more than 80. It is available with a fixed output or DALI dimmable ballast for further energy savings. To complete the range, three-hour emergency versions are also available. Peter Denny, Thorn Lighting Sales Director Trade, concluded, “We are really excited about the introduction of PopPack LED. We believe it brings a fantastic product up to date, while living up to the heritage of the PopPack, which has been the market leading batten for over 50 years.” T: (RoI) 01 4922 877 or (NI) 01388 420042 W: www.thornlighting.ie

New to the lighting market, ROBUS has launched the first ever Driver-onBoard fire-rated dimmable downlight…
Triumph of technology
T
he new ROBUS Triumph Activate 8W IP65 LED dimmable downlight combines Driver-on-Board (DOB) and Chip-on-Board (COB) LED Technology. Available in cool white and warm white, the product’s high specification makes it the downlight of choice, outperforming all current LED downlights in its class. The ROBUS innovation of a low profile LEDCHROIC 38° optic and reflector technology gives the new product the traditional look of a dichroic lamp with the efficiency of LED technology. Robust COB technology allows the installer to interchange this lens with a LEDCHROIC 60° optic lens, which provides an extra wide beam for bespoke lighting using the same lens form factor. The wide flange on the Triumph Activate makes it an ideal retrofit halogen replacement for renovations as well as new build, achieving the same light level using circa 44% less fittings, reducing installation costs and dimmable as standard. Compared to 50W GU10 halogen, the Triumph Activate produces over 35% more light output so fewer fittings may be used for the same lighting effect, reducing energy and electricity costs. In order to meet customer expectations on colour consistency, ROBUS selects its Triumph Activate LEDs from a class-leading three-step Macadam bin in order to ensure accurate and repeatable colour performance. With an efficacy of more than 80 luminare lm/cctW, the new product also provides energy savings in excess of 90% and is compliant with Part L1 and L2 UK Building Regulations.

Des Duignan, Aurora’s Director for Ireland, highlights the company’s innovative LED range, suitable for a wide range of applications…
Enlite - Big on Performance, High on Quality, Low on Price
C
ontractors and consultants should be on the look-out for LED products like those in the Enlite range that are big on performance, high on quality and competitive on price. Enlite products help make LED the best choice across the widest range of applications – here’s a closer look at what this range has to offer:
Enlite E8™ range Occasionally, the ‘one size fits all’ theory really can work. Some lighting products have been cleverly designed to become almost universal solutions and offer great value for money at the same time. Take Enlite’s E8 integrated fire rated downlight. Equally at home setting new levels of performance in both commercial and domestic applications, the insulation coverable E8 features Enlite’s low glare, multifaceted EnFiniti™ lens and delivers 565lm from only 8W. As an LED integrated product, the E8 is quick to install and adds an additional level of security. One contractor customer told Aurora recently, “We do a lot of commercial fit-outs, and if we install traditional luminaires with separate lamps, sadly up to 20% of LED lamps can go missing before handover for all sorts of reasons. That’s quite a cost to absorb. As an integrated downlight, the E8 might cost just a fraction more but when the element of theft (or should we say lamp replacement) is factored in, then the price differential is minimised. At the same time, the E8 also provides our customer with visual performance, energy
E360 GLS LED lamps The new all glass Enlite 360° GLS lamps look so much like a traditional filament bulb; you won’t be able to tell they’re LED. Utilising the latest LED technology and design, light is distributed through 360° to ensure even illumination and eliminate dark shadows. Light spread replicates traditional filament technology, but at a fraction of the energy consumption. Efficacy up to 88lm/W delivers more light using less energy and 2700K colour temperature creates warm white ambient lighting. Enlite E360 GLS LED lamps carry a 2 year warranty.
T8 LED tubes The Enlite range of LED tubes is a costeffective solution for either retrofitting existing T8 fittings or in new installations. Utilising the latest LED technology, they deliver up to 88lm/W, which means more light and 50% less energy usage when

compared to traditional fluorescent T8 tubes. All Enlite LED tubes are built using 360° impact-resistant polycarbonate housing for enhanced aesthetics and durability. The LED starter is included, preventing the risk of electric shock when tubes are inserted or removed from the luminaire. The range is ideal for multiple applications and environments because Enlite T8s can be installed in settings ranging from -20° to +40°C. Life is not affected by frequent switching (eg, when used with occupancy controls), and these tubes come with a two-year warranty. New for 2015, Aurora has added a lot of new products to its Enlite brand of valuedriven LED lamps and luminaires, which sell at competitive prices. Quality always counts with Aurora, so Enlite lighting essentials are manufactured to meet the company’s reputable high-quality standards, which means you don’t need to sacrifice safety and quality – Enlite is a brand you can trust and rely on! F
or Hilclare Lighting, the importance of manufacturing the highest quality products is matched only by the tailored service the company provides – and in Northern Ireland that has very much been in evidence. Three projects completed this year showcase this perfectly – the Door Store, Belfast; Loughside Motors, Enniskillen; and SDC Trailers, Toomebridge. In Toomebridge, Hilclare demonstrated the company’s expertise in hazardous area lighting with this project for one of the leading trailer manufacturers in Europe. The project involved a lighting upgrade for a spray booth in the SDC Trailers’ factory to ensure that it not only delivered effective lighting, but that it was capable of working within the harsh environment. This type of project requires a specialist solution and Hilclare provided just that. While the project at Loughside Motors didn’t involve hazardous area lighting, it still required the same attention to detail. The energy-saving lighting upgrade for both the car showroom and the external car sales area had to match specific protocol ad guidelines set by Vauxhall, with Hilclare providing initial lighting and energy
calculations before delivering a bespoke solution. Energy saving was also the order of the day during an upgrade to the lighting at The Door Store’s premises at Boucher Road, Belfast. Hilclare Lighting replaced a set of 400W metal halide floodights with the 200W LED Coruna range. This helped deliver improved performance, both in terms of effective lighting and energy saving. Steven McMurray, Northern Ireland Project Engineer for Hilclare Lighting, believes the company’s tailored approach makes a real difference. “We don’t provide a one-size-fits-all package,” he explained. “Instead, we prefer to focus on the specific requirements of the client and then find a solution that meets these needs. Energy saving is an area that more and more businesses are looking at and by upgrading their lighting they can make significant savings. “However, the lighting also needs to be effective and we are able to balance this need with the requirement of cutting energy costs. “Whether it is a need for hazardous area lighting, manufacturing or retail, regardless of the environment you are working in we have a solution to meet this.”
About… Hilclare provides luminaire and lighting solutions for both business and the public sector. Years of experience allows the company to provide expert advice, technical ability and the drive for economic viability of all projects undertaken. From initial designs created by an in-house design team, to product innovation, Hilclare Lighting offers customers a fully integrated luminaire and lighting solution. With more than 20 years’ experience as one of the leading commercial lighting manufacturers in the UK, Hilclare provides an extensive catalogue of some of the latest and most innovative industrial lighting solutions. These products are used by businesses, Public Sector organisations, and numerous buildings to provide a combination of lighting, aesthetics, and safety-conscious lighting.

customers to discover the complete Hager product offer whether at work, home or on the move. It offers customers greater control, and by presenting information in a clear and condensed manner, customers are in a better position to make more informed product choices. Pulse users can filter searches in order to identify products that match their precise requirements – ideal when working to a set specification. One of the most noteworthy features on offer, however, is the mass bookmarking facility, which allows users to compile a tailored PDF from products they need for a particular project, grouping together relevant product information in a clear format, saving time and hassle in the process. Additionally, this PDF can then be shared via e-mail from within the app. Designed with optimal readability at its core, users can zoom, pan and flick through product pages, granting them total control over the way they view key information. Alex Gardiner, Communications and New Technologies Manager at Hager Group,
commented, “Pulse is an intuitive way for customers to access information that will enable them to reach informed decisions on which products are best suited to their requirements and can even allow users to present Hager solutions in an innovative way. “Our aim is to empower customers, and we feel the best way to do this is by keeping things simple and transparent. Pulse has been well received so far and we have every confidence that this app will benefit our customers greatly.” Hager UK, part of Hager Group, is a leading supplier of solutions and services for electrical installations in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. The Hager brand, with products ranging from energy distribution through wiring accessories to building automation and security systems, represents the core business of the company. CONSUMER UNITS
Hamilton takes a fresh look at circuit protection Hamilton Litestat has seized an opportunity, presented by Amendment 3 to BS 7671 IET wiring regulations, to enter the Domestic Circuit Protection market with the launch of its own innovative range of metal consumer units…
U
nlike many of the existing suppliers to this market, who are simply changing old enclosure designs from engineering plastic covers to steel covers to conform to the latest amendment, Hamilton Litestat has taken a forward thinking approach. By creating a ‘Smart-Ready’ solution, the company has implemented detailed research to identify the core needs of the installers and users in relation to the regulations. As a result it was decided to develop a new unit designed to operate in readiness of the adoption of ‘smart’ control technologies within the home. In direct response to feedback, Hamilton’s new ‘Convex’ and curved ‘Contour’ metal consumer units not only comply with the new regulations but they exceed expectations on every level. Several innovative features ensure the units are straightforward to install, come in a stylish external design so they don’t have to be

hidden away and essentially incorporate a robust and unique fire protection system designed to optimise safety. In addressing every aspect of circuit protection the company has developed a comprehensive range designed to deliver an ideal solution for most domestic circuit protection installations. As a result: • Gone is the need to hide the units away. They are both robust and stylish and have been designed to be aesthetically pleasing, are manufactured from steel, with a curved option available, and finished in a tough, scratch resistant Matt White paint. • Ease of installation has been made a priority. The units have large, accessible wiring space with removable gland plates top and bottom. Each plate is retained by two screws plus there are knockouts to rear. Cable entries are positioned for easy access to devices.

• Safety is optimised with unique fireproof gland protection adaptors that help to improve fire containment. This includes a fail-safe drop down lid. All of which is fully compliant to BS 7671 (Amendment 3) and comes with a two-year guarantee. Gavin Williams, Marketing Manager at Hamilton, said, “As a trusted and reliable supplier to the trade we saw the latest amendment to the building regulations as a fantastic opportunity for us to enter the domestic circuit protection market. “By getting close to the issues facing both installers and end users has allowed us to fully understand the changing requirements of BS7671 Amendment 3, which, in turn, has enabled us to develop a range of exciting new products needed to comply with the new regulations. As a new entrant to the market we have had to make sure our offering would bring new ideas and innovative solutions so that we can keep one step ahead of the traditional players in this sector.” He added, “As well as having the best looking range of consumer units available in the market we have also designed a totally unique installation feature with our products that no one else can offer and makes it the safest and easiest board to install,” adds Gavin. CONSUMER UNITS
JASON HALLAM, UK SALES SPECIFICATION MANAGER AT CPN-CUDIS, EXPLAINS HOW THE COMPANY’S NEW METAL CONSUMER UNIT HAS BEEN DESIGNED FOR EASE OF INSTALLATION, IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS OF AMENDMENT 3…
When safety meets design I mproving safety in the home is high on the agenda in the latest changes to the IET Wiring Regulations, but what do the new standards mean for electrical industry professionals? At the start of the year, when the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) launched its Third Amendment to the 17th edition Wiring Regulations, it meant important changes for the UK’s electrical industry. From January 1, 2016, under Regulation 421.1.201, all consumer units installed in domestic premises will need to have their enclosure constructed of non-combustible materials. The new rule conforms to BS EN 61439-3 and has been developed to safeguard against the risk of fire from overheating connections in consumer units. The amendment suggests a

ferrous metal, such as steel, as an acceptable example of a noncombustible material. Also, to meet the requirements, all parts of the enclosure need to be made of metal, including the box, cover, door, hinges and handle, so as to limit the spread of fire. The technical team at CPN-Cudis has a great deal of understanding of the needs of electrical contractors, when installing a consumer unit. So, when designing our new metal consumer unit, as well as being compliant with the latest electrical standards, it was also important to make it simple to install. As part of the team that worked on the design of the new unit, we utilised our years of experience of electrical installation requirements and inspection and testing to make the installation process as straightforward as possible. We’ve maximised space inside the unit, for ease of installation. The position and size of the knockouts were given careful consideration to offer the installer full accessibility for cables. The design has circular knockouts positioned on all four sides and rectangular knockouts to the rear.

new consumer unit was to create a product that was aesthetically pleasing as well as practical, especially as so many units are visible in the home; with that in mind the new design retains the look of the current CPN-Cudis plastic consumer unit. The metal consumer unit is available in three standard sizes (8, 12 and 16 ways), and is complete with a 100A main switch control. It has an adaptive busbar system appropriate for a variety of installations and is suitable for high integrity installations. If installers require further advice, they can call our technical support line and speak to qualified electricians. The Third Amendment compliant consumer unit was launched in June, with additional features available shortly after, such as the LUMO LED and a wide range of RAL colour options. Providing contractors with the opportunity to see the product first hand and ask questions, the team at CPN-Cudis showcased the new metal consumer unit at the Elex Show at Event City in Manchester in June. AXA offers some handy hints to ensure you stay safe on the road…
Tips for van driver safety
G
ood driving and road safety are a priority for the thousands of van drivers on Northern Ireland’s roads. Here are some tips on how to drive safely and reduce your chance of having an accident on the road: • Regular vehicle checks - It’s your responsibility to make sure that your vehicle is roadworthy, so you should carry out regular checks and maintenance. You should also check your lights and tyres regularly in case of poor driving conditions. • Take breaks on long journeys - Van drivers sometimes can’t avoid long journeys, but if you are travelling for a long time make regular stops along the way. Also if possible try and share the driving with others to avoid driver fatigue.
• Plan your journeys to find the safest route - Some minor roads are unsuitable for larger vehicles, particularly if you are towing a trailer. You should plan your journey to find the safest route and avoid any unnecessary risks. • Look out for other road users - You should also think of other road users as you drive, particularly cyclists and motorbike users who might be harder to see. Remember to check blind spots and take off slowly from junctions and roundabouts. • Get the right insurance cover for your van - It’s important to get the right cover for your vehicle in case you have an accident,
particularly if you rely on your vehicle to keep your business running. Your insurance could give you cover for a replacement vehicle or personal injury cover which can be a great benefit to business owners. For more details about van insurance, contact the AXA Insurance Van Team on 028 9002 0419. AXA provides cover to van drivers across Northern Ireland and has a dedicated team based in Belfast to help get you the right cover for you and your van. AXA also has a local claims team and 15 branches across Northern Ireland, so you will never be far from someone to help, if you need it.
