BRIEF

Dublin LED firm signs €30m financing deal Urban Volt, a Dublinheadquartered energy-saving LED lighting firm, has signed a €30million funding deal with Susi Partners, a Swiss green energy private equity outfit. Co-founded by former Merrill Lynch banker Kevin Maughan, Urban Volt invests its capital installing energy-efficient lighting for businesses free of charge, with an agreement to split the energy savings between both parties over five years. The deal with Susi will see the Irish company bundle groups of its clients into portfolios, with each bundle representing an installation outlay by Urban Volt of €1million. Susi will then take

equity stakes in the bundles, freeing up cash for Urban Volt. The company began trading in April 2016 and has signed up for about 100 projects so far. The focus is currently very much on the Irish market, although the company is also assessing opportunities in the German and Austrian markets. Urban Volt says most customers will record a reduction in their lighting costs of at least 50%. The company targets small and medium enterprises for its lighting solutions, as well as such as manufacturing plants, warehouses and car parks. T: (RoI/NI) 00353 (0)1 699 3340 W: www.urbanvolt.com

ESB to enter UK market Ireland-based ESB will start selling electricity and gas to customers in England, Scotland and Wales from July this year. Seen as one of the biggest strategic decisions ever taken by the semi-state, a soft launch in July will be followed by hard launch in October. Although the UK energy market

is dominated by the ‘Big Six’ suppliers, there are 50 gas and electricity suppliers in the consumer market there, along with several smaller operators. The move has been codenamed ‘Project Arrow’ and is, according to the ESB, at an extremely early stage. W: www.esb.ie

ISO success Jones Engineering recently announced it has achieved the internationally recognised environmental management standard, ISO 14001:2015. The company announced a turnover of €360million in 2015 and expanded its operations to over eight countries. Constructionrelated deaths fall in 2016 Figures released from the Health and Safety Authority show there were nine people killed in constructionrelated accidents in 2016, down from 11 in 2015. Forty-four people in total were killed in the workplace in 2016, representing a 21% reduction of the 56 reported in 2015.

Public sector saved €154m in energy in 2015 The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s (SEAI) annual report on the energy efficiency performance of public bodies shows that Government departments and public bodies avoided €154million energy spend through increased energy efficiency. The sector is now 21% more energy efficient and is on track to meet the 2020 target of becoming 33% more energy efficient. Efficiency gains have been achieved through implementation of thousands of diverse projects including structured energy management, building and facility upgrades, retrofits, changes in transportation, better energy procurement and through behavioural change. Majella Kelleher, SEAI Head of Energy Demand Management, said, “It is very encouraging to see the increased levels of compliance with the reporting requirements.” T: (RoI) 01 8082100 or (NI) 00353 1 8082100 W: www.seai.ie

INDUSTRY FOCUS - BREXIT AND TRUMP

AS PRESIDENT TRUMP TAKES OFFICE AND THE RAMIFICATIONS OF A POST-BREXIT ECONOMY BECOME A REALITY, ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE’S DENISE MAGUIRE ASKS WHAT DO THESE UNCERTAIN TIMES MEAN FOR THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IN IRELAND?

Strange times W hile the start of a new year generally brings optimism, Brexit and the election of Donald Trump have changed the landscape a little. As our closest neighbour, the UK’s decision to leave the EU will undoubtedly affect Ireland. After news of Brexit spread, the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) issued a statement expressing concern that the decision would likely see some reduction in GDP in Ireland. The Federation called on the Irish Government to engage with the UK and the EU to ensure that as much certainty as possible was brought into the process. Information on the UK’s next steps and the timeframes involved were, said the CIF, vital for Irish construction businesses to measure risks in the coming months. Calls were also made to make the

6 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

public capital programme a priority, stating that “the positive impact of investment in infrastructure is one of the only economic certainties in this current period of uncertainty”. Uncertainty seems to be the word most associated with Brexit and its impact on the construction industry and, in turn, the electrical industry. Electrical contractors operating in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have already been affected by a Brexit slowdown. A significant number of companies have also said they were proactively changing their business strategy to adapt to the new economic reality of Brexit, with most saying that the major impact of Brexit would not be felt for several years. Almost all companies also agree that strict border controls and trade restrictions between the UK and the

Republic of Ireland would be extremely negative for the sector and its ability to work across jurisdictions.

RESILIENCE Despite these reports, several industry commentators have talked about the resilience of Irish firms who have worked in the UK construction industry for years. Their ability to adapt will, they say, help them weather the uncertainty of how a separation of the UK from the EU will work in practice. Reassuring as this viewpoint may be, it’s also true that, for businesses operating across the island of Ireland, the cross-border implications are especially uncertain. The additional compliance that may be required on cross-border trade as well as the freedom to move staff between Ireland and the UK/Northern Ireland is also unknown, making strategic planning

virtually impossible, particularly for SMEs. Volatile currency markets have also led to a decline in Irish exports to the UK, while Irish imports from Britain also slowed between January and the end of April, reducing by €116million compared to the same period last year. The ability of Irish businesses to remain competitive has also been threatened by fluctuations in currency. Some companies have already reduced their product prices in order to compete in the UK market. We won’t see the real impact of Brexit until the withdrawal agreement is finally signed but, according to some, it may not be all bad news for Ireland. Industry commentators such as Grant Thornton have stated that Ireland and, in particular, Dublin may benefit from FDI that would normally go to London. If more financial firms decide to relocate to Dublin due to the uncertain environment created by Brexit in the UK, a larger number of Grade A offices in central business districts will be required. However, this additional work would be dependent on a new Government strategy that would allow the construction industry to deliver the housing and infrastructural needs of

TRUMP

“It has been suggested that our skills crisis may be helped of there is a slowdown in the UK and skilled workers consider Ireland a more favourable place to work.”

The impact that President Trump may have is less clear. Some experts have warned that Trump’s determination to reduce US corporation tax rates from 35% to 15%, a figure close to the Irish rate of 12.5%, may have an impact on multinationals currently in Ireland. Indeed, one of Trump’s top advisers has warned that a “flood of companies” will leave Ireland under the President’s planned new tax regime. This will have a direct impact on the facilities being built here, like for example, data centres. Trump’s views on free trade may also mean the defeat of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), a series of trade deals between the EU and the US, along with the Trans-Pacific Partnership. A trade and investment agreement

between the world’s two most important economic powers would give a strong boost to our economies and create jobs on both sides of the Atlantic; without it, free trade will become difficult, if not impossible. This potential move to a protectionist era could affect Irish export growth in the years ahead to one of our key markets. 2017 and beyond will see the real impact of changes created by Brexit and the election of Trump as POTUS. Our economic landscape has completely changed; now is the time for Irish businesses to inform and educate themselves to ensure that they’re ready to face the challenges that lie ahead.

these organisations. It has also been suggested that our skills crisis may be helped if construction slows down in the UK and skilled workers begin to consider Ireland a more favourable place to work. We may not know the ins and outs just yet, but it’s certain that Brexit will have an effect on our construction sector.

to be working with them on a number of prestigious projects throughout Northern Ireland.” Phase one of the impressive 50-bedroom extension was completed in December, with the complete work set to finish later this year. The project has refurbished what was Lancashire House in the city centre to bring a remodelled front of house, new kitchens and a complete modernisation of all bedrooms alongside the addition of new executive meeting rooms and function suites. Specialised Fire & Security supplied a new networked fire and alarm system for the new extension while also undertaking an upgrade to the existing system throughout the hotel. “We replaced the existing control panel and have integrated the old system into the new one,” explained John. “There had been issues with false alarms that were simply down to the age of the existing system, so the upgrade will help to eradicate this. It’s not ideal to have false alarms in any setting, but particularly in a hotel, so that has been paramount.” The partnership approach from Specialised Fire & Security Ltd

has been acknowledged by the electrical contractor, James Haughey & Co, and electrical consultant, FM Stewart and Associates. Eddie Haughey, Partner at James Haughey & Co, said, “We completed this project in record time and when you are facing such a strict deadline then every link in the chain is important. “Specialised Fire & Security played a central role in this process. We have worked with them on a number of projects and have been impressed by their technical expertise.” Philip Sweetlove, Director, FM Stewart and Associates, added, “Specialised Fire & Security have proved themselves over a number of projects that we have worked together on. They provide a high level of customer service and are easy to work with.” John concluded, “We are delighted to have been involved in this project. We have a number of clients in the hotel and leisure sector and, as this is an area that is growing in Belfast, the Ten Square Hotel provided us with another opportunity to highlight how we can provide solutions that meet the specific requirements of the project.”

New appointment Specialised Fire & Security has added an important new member of staff. Ashleigh Spence, who has over 15 years’ experience in the fire and security sector, joins the company from Alarm Supplies in Belfast where she was Branch Manager Her new role as Office Manager will further enhance the service offered by Specialised Fire & Security. “I am delighted to be joining the company and I am really enjoying the challenge,” said Ashleigh. “As Office Manager, most of my work will be behind the scenes. I will be co-ordinating our teams as well as being involved in tenders, cost analysis and logistics - all of which will ensure that we are perfectly positioned to provide customers with the highest standards of service.” She added, “Time is of the essence when we are on site, with projects facing strict deadlines. My role is to ensure that our teams can hit the ground running when they do get on site and that we can complete work as efficiently as possible.”

Mechanical Electrical Fixings (MEF) recently announced the opening of its 15,000sqft distribution centre in Santry, Dublin to meet increasing demand for Metsec products in the Republic of Ireland. The Edinburgh-based wholesaler, MEF, has worked with Metsec for the past decade and is one of the largest stock-holders of Metsec cable management products in the UK. Earlier this year, MEF acquired a Belfast base to serve the market in Northern Ireland, but with increasing demand for Metsec’s products, decided to open a further distribution centre in Ireland. Mike Mearns, Commercial Director at MEF, said, “The Republic of Ireland is going through a boom time with the Irish government attracting major technology investment and we’ve seen a large number of big players in the data centre industry recently building or expanding facilities in Ireland. These data centres require a substantial amount of cable management products including trunking, trays and both pre- and post-galvanised ladders. The new distribution centre means we can provide the Metsec products to these customers quickly and at a very competitive price.”

COMPANY FOCUS - OMAK AGENCIES

IMPROVED SERVICE IN NORTHERN IRELAND PROVIDES THE FOUNDATION TO GROW INTO REPUBLIC OF IRELAND AND GREAT BRITAIN…

Exciting expansion plans by OMAK Agencies

I

t’s a win-win situation for OMAK Agencies Ltd, with the company expanding into the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain markets while improving its customer service levels in Northern Ireland. This year is set to be an important one for the company as it continues to offer the perfect balance of the traditional values people expect from a family business with modern day demands. The company was established 25 years ago by husband-and-wife Bill and Karen Hutchison. That family appeal is further enhanced with sons, Gareth and Neil, also working for the company, alongside the only non-family member, Gary Hull, who is the company’s sales representative. As distributors to electrical wholesalers, OMAK’s primary focus is on energy-efficient lighting. However, the company now also offers a range of electrical solutions for indoor environments, with a range of hand dryers and fly killers. The drive to remain competitive in a crowded marketplace has been relentless, and OMAK has once again demonstrated this commitment with further expansion plans. Gareth explained, “Last year we moved to new premises that have trebled our warehouse capacity. We also have a new showroom

Company founders, Bill and Karen Hutchison (centre) with (from left) Gareth Hutchison, Gary Hull and Neil Hutchison.

that allows us to showcase our extensive product range. That has given us the perfect base to be able to expand into new markets. We have already established relationships with a number of electrical wholesalers in the Republic of Ireland and have received positive responses in GB, which is a market we are actively exploring at present. “Investment in new computer systems, a new website and social media has enhanced what was an already reliable customer service.” He added, “We are all about building relationships with customers. Of course we have to be commercially aware, and many of our recent changes have been focused on this aspect.” The company’s route to market is through electrical wholesalers but OMAK Agencies is also working directly with architects, consultants and contractors to build product awareness. “These are exciting times and being able to move into new markets is only possible because of the solid base we already have in Northern Ireland. That is something that we are very aware of as we expand and move forward.”

Spotlight on products OMAK Agencies Ltd offers an extensive product range that combines the company’s own brand Kamo with established and recognised brands. • Kamo-Lite low energy lighting • V-Tac LED lighting • KSR lighting • Ghidini lighting • CPN-Cudis distribution boards • Commercial Electric Heat • Kamo-Dry hand dryers • Fumagalli hand and hairdryers • Kamo-Fly fly killers • Ringtail emergency lighting

DISTRIBUTOR - DEMESNE ELECTRICAL

LSHF Flexible Conduit a contradiction in the regulations? ARE YOU USING LSF OR LSHF CABLES ON SITE? IF YOU ARE, DEMESNE HAS SOME WORDS OF ADVICE…

I

f the answer to the above question is yes, then Demesne is advising customers that they should consider protecting those cables with an LSHF Flexible Conduit. The move to LSF/ LSHF/LS0H cables has come about due to demand for safety in public areas, such as hospitals, schools, train stations and on public transport. The risk of poisonous fumes and thick black smoke can be a greater risk to lives than that of fire alone. LSF, LSHF, LS0H – what are the differences? LSF stands for Low Smoke Fumes. In regard to control, signal and data cables, LSF cables and conduits are made from a modified version of PVC. These LSF cables/conduits can still give off large and dangerous amounts of thick black smoke along with hydrogen chloride gas when burned. Black smoke can obscure emergency exits and hydrogen chloride can be deadly to people who come into contact with it. LSHF stands for Low Smoke Halogen Free, while LS0H stands for Low Smoke Zero Halogen. When these cables or conduits are exposed to

www.elecmagazine.com

FOLLOW US ON:

fire, they emit no more than 0.5% hydrogen chloride. Has this caused a contradiction in the regulations? Clause 527 of the National Wiring Rules deals with selection and erection of wiring systems to minimise the spread of fire. This encompasses conduits/trunkings. Cables must comply with I.S 201 and conduits/ trunkings must comply with EN 500861 for conduits or EN 50085-1 for trunkings. Nothing in the regulations states that LSHF or LS0H conduits must be used in public buildings or where LSF/LSHF cables are being installed. Surely it doesn’t make sense that halogen free cables are required but these cables could be ‘protected’ in a standard and potentially deadly conduit? With this in mind, Demesne Electrical is the first electrical distributor in Ireland to import a complete range of Low Smoke Halogen Free Flexible Conduit and Glands to suit Interflex LSHF Flexible Conduits. With over 35 years’ experience in the electrical trade, Demesne has grown

to become Ireland’s leading Irishowned independent electrical supplier, importer and distributor of industrial and electrical components. The company has four branches around Ireland, Dublin, Cork, Belfast and Dungannon and recently opened a branch in Luton in the UK. As an ISO accredited company, Demesne says it never takes its customers’ requirements and methods of operations for granted, while regular contact with key customers ensures the company is open and adaptable to suit the ever-changing market place. In 2016, Demesne Electrical was named one of Ireland’s ‘Best Managed’ companies in the Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards Programme.

INDUSTRY VIEWS - LEGRAND

THE DEADLINE FOR THE BIM LEVEL 2 MANDATE HAS BEEN AND GONE, BUT FOR THE MARKET WHAT’S CHANGED AND WHAT ARE THE KEY DISCUSSIONS YET TO BE HAD? MATT CRUNDEN, TRAINING AND BIM MANAGER AT LEGRAND UK & IRELAND, DISCUSSES PROGRESS AND THE CHALLENGES THAT LIE AHEAD…

Tackling BIM - a new chapter

F

or all intents and purposes, Building Information Modelling (BIM) was designed to enable greater efficiencies in both the design and build phases of a construction project and then, for the full lifecycle of a building. So why is there so much resistance if there are so many benefits to gain? Much doesn’t actually stem from not realising its potential, but from a reluctance to embrace new workflows and working practices as well as potential retraining. The wider requirement to open up workflows and foster open collaboration is also key. Only through the use of structured data in a common language and the sharing of content and information will BIM’s potential be reached. For manufacturers, having information available in the required format is therefore key. Via these open, transparent and collaborative workflows, the benefits for the construction industry will be numerous, not least in terms of cost savings. Workflows will enable any bottlenecks to be highlighted and therefore allow an early fix

24 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

“With the benefits so clear, it is just a matter of time before we’re all singing from the same BIM sheet.”

before costs and time escalates. But it’s not just the construction industry that will benefit. For end users of a building, there are also real gains to be made as developments designed using BIM will ensure products are specified in terms of efficiencies and the whole lifecycle cost of the build as opposed to materials alone. Buildings therefore will be designed with efficiency front of mind, not just based upon cost. Helping people to realise BIM’s potential is now one of the biggest challenges. It will require an open mind and, to an extent, a willingness to accept that the ways we have been working for the last 10 to 30 years may not be the best way to work today. As architects and designers grapple with BIM, it will firstly open up opportunities for those companies displaying information in the correct format. At Legrand UK & Ireland for example, BIM Revit files for a number of our cable management, under-desk power distribution and buscom trunking products are available to download from both our website and BIMstore.

However, specialist knowledge and experience of products first hand will still be required during the specification stages – particularly for the M&E contractors. Furthermore, electricians, plumbers and other tradesmen will also still be required to complete the job. Post-completion also remains the incredibly important role of educating the end user for the continued operation and maintenance of the premises. Of course our roles and responsibilities may change as BIM projects develop but ultimately the concept of collaborative working can only be realised if all parties are willing to embrace it. In fact the likelihood is that BIM will actually help to enhance teamwork and the relationships between architects and contractors, rather than hinder it. With the benefits so clear, it is just a matter of time before we’re all singing from the same BIM sheet.

A huge target growth area for Marco, Belfast-based Gareth has over 20 years’ experience working in the cable management industry, having previously worked with businesses including Schneider and Mita. Commenting on his new role, Gareth, said, “I’m very comfortable working within this sector and have extensive knowledge of the cable management industry. I have worked with several of the key figures within Marco in years past and am incredibly excited to be making the move.” Gareth is particularly well known in Northern Ireland where he will adopt a similar role as Area Sales Manager. He continued, “Marco’s focus remains solely on the cable management sector and I am keen to apply my experience, understanding and contacts to this growing business. This is undoubtedly a refreshing move for me that will allow me

Gareth added, “For many businesses, as they grow, their approach to customer service can be compromised and representatives of that business become a voice in the ether, operating from large call centres, often based abroad. This really isn’t the case with Marco who are anything but a faceless organisation.” Gareth has now made the move to Marco and is keen to begin to make an impact. “The Marco products and brand are known throughout Ireland and the Isle of Man but could certainly be further developed, which is my goal. I’m also impressed with the firm’s plans to continue to invest and develop new products for the future which is incredibly important to a changing market. “A significant selling benefit will also be the fact that all products are made in the UK. There is a definite trend towards buying within our shores, with people recognising the quality of UKmade products and with wider political changes that could affect the European landscape. “There’s plenty of benefits to using Marco and I’m looking forward to getting those strong messages out there.” Jeff Kerridge, Sales Manager at Marco, commented, “We’re really pleased to welcome Gareth. I’m sure he’ll be a huge asset to the firm. His knowledge of the industry coupled with his contacts and understanding of the market in Ireland make him the ideal choice for this position.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF A LABEL ON A CABLE IS NOT ONLY ABOUT MEETING REGULATIONS, BUT ABOUT AVOIDING UNNECESSARY DOWNTIME AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, PROTECTING LIVES. LIESBET DE SOOMER, MARKETING MANAGER FOR EMEA, NEWELL BRANDS, EXPLAINS…

Label that cable

I

t’s a small part of installing or maintaining an electrical wiring system. And yet, if overlooked, it can have expensive, perhaps even fatal consequences. Labelling a cables seems insignificant, but for electrical engineers, there’s a good reason to get it right. Most electricians have, at one point or another, been forced to trace an unidentified wire. In a domestic setting an unlabelled wire can turn a simple five minute job into an entire afternoon. In a commercial or industrial setting, this can mean days. Time is money and all the hours wasted on unlabelled wires is time not spent on other paying jobs. If this was to happen on site where delays can attract large penalty fines, then the cost

Clear labelling can save lives and time.

26 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

implication could massive. For other businesses, downtime can still cost thousands of pounds per hour in terms of lost revenue, reduced staff productivity and other bills and fines. For any electrician tasked with getting a business back on line urgently, the last thing they want to see is a wire without a corresponding label. However, time efficiency seems insignificant when you consider that mislabelling a wire can have fatal consequences. Professional electrical engineers have a responsibility to ensure work meets health and safety regulations and indeed they can be held criminally liable for any injuries or deaths resulting from their work. Yet, sometimes, these regulations aren’t the immediately obvious ‘life and death’ scenarios such as an exposed live wire. For example, section 514 “identification and notices” of the BSEN 7671 17th Edition, 3rd Amendment, outlines the minimum text size required for some notice labels. Believe it or not, this regulation may not be met by some current labelling solutions.

As well as issues with unsuitable labelling products, we’ve also found that some users of labelling solutions haven’t received formal training. Fortunately, new products such as the DYMO XTL handheld labelling machine come with ready-made templates that help electricians ensure their labels are meeting the required health and safety standards at all times. The product also connects to a laptop or computer for a quick and easy update, so if new regulations are introduced, you’ll be prepared. Choosing the right labelling product is the easiest way for electrical professionals to keep wiring safe, cost effective and manageable. However, the right labelling tool can make all the difference. It’s a small part of installing or maintaining an electrical wiring system, but the role labelling plays is vital to creating a safe and effective system. Electrical professionals must ensure they are familiar with the regulatory landscape and that they have the tools they need to do the job. W: www.dymo.com

ROI CABLE VIEWS - NSAI

AN INSIGHT INTO THHE AMENDMENTS TO THE NATIONAL RULES FOR ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS, SET TO COME INTO EFFECT ON SEPTEMBER 5, 2017...

Big changes ahead? A

ccording to National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI), the ETCI Cables Technical Committee was asked to examine the size of the protective conductor due to changes in the Building Regulations and materials being used, for example, or plastics plumbing systems etc. Following a lengthy technical examination and the wellestablished practice of all other cable types, the solution proposed was to increase the protective conductor size to the identical size as the phase and neutral conductors. It was also proposed to insulate the protective conductor departing from the current bare earth type. In 2013, NSAI published a revision to the standard I.S. 2014 entitled “Polyvinyl Chloride Insulated Cables of Rated Voltages up to and including 450/750v – Part 4: PVC and Low Smoke Halogen Free Sheathed cables for fixed wiring”. This standard was adopted by the Electro-Technical Council

www.elecmagazine.com

of Ireland (ETCI) in the National Wiring Rules and covers the complete range of cables for domestic fixed wiring including Twin and Earth along with NYM types. The new standard includes 6mm2, 10mm2 and 16mm2 twin and earth cables with flexible conductors. All of these cables include both PVC and Low Smoke Halogen Free versions.

WHO DOES IT AFFECT? This amendment, called Amendment No. 2.2 to the National Rules for electrical installations ET 101, affects manufacturers of electrical cables, electrical contractors and electrical installers. From September 5 2017, all electrical installers and electrical contractors must ensure they only use the new type of cables (as described in the amendment). NSAI recently established the Electro-Technical Committee which, in future, will be responsible for all standards,

including the National Wiring Rules for the electro-technical sector. The new ElectroTechnical Committee, dealing with wiring rules, held its first meeting in December 2016. Safe Electric is responsible for regulating the activities of Registered Electrical Contractors (RECs). This change will, says Dominic Dunne, Managing Director at Metac Training, have a considerable effect. “Conduit manufacturers may well have to increase the size of conduits to support the larger cables. This in turn might mean that the size of chases may also need to be increased to house the larger conduits. Metal and plastic boxes, fittings etc may also have to increase the size of their openings to be compatible with the larger conduits and cable.”

I am delighted to take on this new leadership challenge and very much look forward to capitalising on our sales people’s superb capabilities, excellent brand equity and exciting product portfolio in order to maximise our global reach.” In more positive news from the company, Mick Slein (Junior), a key member of its Sales Management, has been promoted to Commercial Director.

Mick first joined the business in 2008 as a graduate of DCU and participated in the LED Group Graduate Programme, working across various departments and showing great capabilities in several areas. He left the LED Group thereafter to gain experience in another company and during his time with Enterprise Rent-A-Car he became the youngest ever branch manager in history across Ireland and the UK. In 2011 Michael moved to Sydney to join the LED Group sales team which was at the early stages of formation. He was appointed New South Wales State Manager in 2012 and achieved double digit growth each year between 2012 and 2015. Michael returned to Ireland in January 2016 to take up the role of Irish Sales Manager, resulting in the LED Group’s most successful year in the Irish market since it commenced business in 1984. January 2017 sees Michael take on the role of Commercial Director, where he will lead all teams dealing with the supply chain (NPD, RD&I, QC and Purchasing). In this new position Michael will consolidate the business strategy around supply chain management while continuing to implement the sales and marketing strategy in the Irish market with a new report taking on the role of Irish Sales Manager. Mick’s global experience around team building, sales and supplier management ensures he will lead the LED Group’s greatest investment areas of RD&I and NPD into a future that looks very promising for the ROBUS brand. AS SPARKSAFE LTP CONTINUES TO RAISE STANDARDS IN NORTHERN IRELAND, CHARLOTTE BAMBER, SYSTEMS & COMPLIANCE DIRECTOR, HIGHLIGHTS HOW THE SYSTEM WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE IN THE UK FROM 2017 ONWARDS…

orthern Ireland has taken up the task of developing a unique online Electrical Licence to Practice system. SparkSafe LtP had been initially conceived, designed and introduced as a resource aimed at tackling the race-to-the-bottom tendering culture that has prevailed in the local economy. The system has been chosen, approved and specified by Northern Ireland’s leading public procurement organisations, with the aim of addressing some of the industry’s biggest challenges. Perhaps the most important of these, is to restore the ‘level playing field’ ethos towards the value and quality of skilled labour. Many client organisations in the Public Sector recognise that low bid tendering is perpetuated by a dependency of contract winners on a higher proportion of underqualified and unqualified labour to meet labour budgets. The adoption of the new

system by the Public Sector aims to break this cycle. Since February 2016, electrical contractors have become obliged to think more carefully about labour costs and workforce composition, before finalising tender bids. Client interest in the qualitative make-up of the electrical contractor’s workforce is now brought to the forefront and has been made visible through the online system. One of the first organisations to specify the requirement was Northern Ireland’s principal social housing authority, the NIHE. The £600million NIHE contracts have been awarded to four main contractors who are obliged to only employ Licenced Electrical Workers. Each worker must register for a Licence and then become connected online with the contract via their employer and the main contractor. The system will be made available to Private and Public Sector clients in the UK from 2017 onwards.

Time to Connect Competency with Contracts

Back in the 80’s, there was a certain prestige attached to the trade of an electrician. This characteristic existed because client perception was relatively high. The strength of this has now diminished. Some contributing factors to this include: • We are regularly outbid by new sectors for the best of the school-leaving population (IT, media, etc). • Loss of nominated sub-contractor status has imposed ‘Dutch auction’ conditions. • The industry is out branded by other contemporary sectors (eg the gas industry). • Increase in self-employment and the empowerment of agencies have destabilised labour costs. • A reduced commitment to apprenticeship training and an absence of mandatory CPD. • Poor gatekeeping resources have let too many underqualified and unqualified workers into the industry. • There has been a lack of reform and modernisation. • Weakened union.

Cynicism, scepticism, and pessimism have not served the industry well. We need intelligent arguments and creative thinking to help reform and modernise the industry on behalf of our customers. SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) and PEST (Political, Economic, Social, and Technological) analysis appear to be nonexistent or ineffective in producing a national action plan. Many initiatives overlook the user experience. Have we designed schemes that lack real client engagement? User experience/customer behaviour is a good place to start. After all, the client, must be our priority. We must

concentrate our efforts on those who demonstrate ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’. We must provide them with a tangible benefit, and a resource to help them choose contractors who train apprentices and employ up to date, qualified electrical workers. A national, online Electrical Licence to Practice system that connects competency with contracts is now essential! The system must be used as an instrument to weed out cowboys, invigorate training, promote the competent, favour the responsible bidder and restore the prestige of a valuable industry.

ARVALEE SCHOOL AND RESOURCE CENTRE

School’s out for GR White & Son Ltd PROGRESSIVE ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR UTILISES ITS WIDERANGING EXPERIENCE TO ENSURE STUDENTS CAN GET BACK TO SCHOOL ON TIME…

T

he logistical expertise and experience of GR White & Son Ltd has ensured that the first phase of the impressive new Strule Shared Education project in Omagh got off to the best possible start. The £8.25million Arvalee School and Resource Centre marks Phase One of the forward-thinking new education campus that, once completed, will see five other new post-primary schools being built alongside Arvalee on the site of the former Lisanelly Barracks army base in the County Tyrone town. While GR White & Son has completed education projects of this size in the past, the main challenge at Arvalee was the timescale. Following a fire which destroyed the original Arvalee School in September 2012, pupils were moved to temporary accommodation on the existing school

site. In order to minimise the school’s stay in this temporary setting, the preferred solution was to build the new Arvalee School at Lisanelly Campus ahead of schedule. This required focus and planning from the entire team, with GR White & Son working closely with main contractor, Woodvale Construction, which completed the work in a Joint Venture with Lowry Building and Civil Engineering Ltd. Allen McComb, Contracts Manager at GR White & Son, explained, “Time is always a factor on every project but at Arvalee there was a real drive to ensure the students could be in their new school as quickly as possible. “We used proactive procurement measures, phased handovers of each section of the project and a strict commissioning programme to ensure we kept everything on track. This was backed up with weekly progress meetings with the construction team and fortnightly meetings with the design team. All this helped ensure that we met our targets and we were delighted to play our part in

completing the project on time and on budget. The controlled special school is for children and young people aged three to 19 years old, with moderate and severe learning difficulties, and it is centred around four hubs. These have been designed to maximise the potential in children of various ages in a unique design which caters sensitively and appropriately for the pupils’ educational needs. From an electrical perspective, an extensive list of services had to be installed. Allen added, “There was a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and we installed a complete LED lighting scheme while we had to work towards meeting the requirement of BREEAM ‘Excellent’. Following on from the success of the Arvalee project, the progressive company is currently working on a number of notable projects, including NIAS Enniskillen; NIE Sub station EICR inspections; Electrical maintenance for Fermanagh Omagh District Council; and Grove House at the Tyrone & Fermanagh Hospital.

ARVALEE SCHOOL AND RESOURCE CENTRE

AJ Hurst and Dextra Lighting have provided wide-ranging LED solutions for Arvalee School and Resource Centre.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY, LOW MAINTENANCE AND PREMIUM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS ARE ALL MET ACROSS A DIVERSE RANGE OF REQUIREMENTS…

Grade A performance from AJ Hurst Ltd and Dextra Lighting

A

J Hurst Ltd and Dextra Lighting’s recent design for Arvalee School and Resource Centre demonstrates why LED and advanced sensor controls are regarded as the number one energyefficiency recommendation for the education sector. Alongside the premium performance, increased energy-efficiency and low-maintenance benefits, the new system was designed to be integrated with the building’s modern architecture, whilst improving ROIs by minimising the number of luminaires used. This focus led to the design and delivery of a sensor-controlled LED solution offering future-proof levels of energy-efficiency and functionality. Both the consultant and the contractor were delighted with the service. Allen McComb, GR White & Sons Ltd, commented, “AJ Hurst and Dextra really delivered for us on this job. Fittings were supplied in full on the dates that we requested

them, and we found them easy to install. Both companies were easy to work with and very helpful when information was requested.” Padraic Quinn, of Caldwell Consulting, added, “This was our first association with AJ Hurst and Dextra on such a large scale project, and we were very pleased with their service from design through to completion. “AJ Hurst and Dextra provided comprehensive calculations in accordance with the design specification provided and we found that the products put forward for approval were both highly efficient and highly suited to the environment to be installed.” The majority of LED products at Arvalee are manufactured using the latest LM80-verified Lumileds 3535 LED chips, offering 90% lumen maintenance for the first 60,000 operating hours. A bespoke Master and Slave sensor network, designed through AJ Hurst by Dextra’s inhouse design team, improves the

energy-efficiency and functionality. The high performance Prosport LED is purpose-built for modern sports environments so was perfect for the sports hall. To cut installation costs, the Prosport was prewired and was provided with a zintec spine to simplify mounting at inconveniently high ceilings. In the fitness centre, the Arcus LED was supplied while in the shower rooms, the decorative AMED LED IP65 bulkhead offered sealed protection from water, dust and dirt ingress. For the classrooms and labs, the Modled Slim was installed in both recessed and suspended formats while, in the reception area and in the corridors, the Capo LED pendant and Protec LED were selected. Dexeco Impervia LEDs were installed in the car park and main driveway while the Avalon Wallpack floodlight was mounted onto the building’s external walls. Finally, LED3 Emergency Modules provide threehour non-maintained emergency lighting.

CASE STUDY – COURTOWN ADVENTRE & LEISURE CENTRE, WEXFORD

Adventure awaits! SOLAR PV TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT COURTOWN ADVENTURE & LEISURE CENTRE IN COUNTY WEXFORD…

I

n the latter part of 2015, Courtown Adventure & Leisure Centre in Co Wexford looked toward the energy efficient measures available to them in reducing their energy consumption and overall carbon footprint. Courtown Adventure & Leisure Centre is a charitable organisation with a voluntary board of directors who employ a team of professionals to manage the operations on their behalf. Headed up by General Manager Margaret Quinn, a sub-committee at the Centre

is charged with looking after energy and it was the forward thinking of this committee that has highlighted the growth of solar PV here in Ireland. After identifying the benefits that solar PV could bring to the centre, they set about getting the funding for the project with the help of Wexford County Council. Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency was appointed to project manage and set about upgrading existing systems and fittings to improve energy efficiency throughout the

business. This was achieved through a number of different measures, including a large solar PV installation on the roof of the leisure centre itself by Activ8. The Adventure & Leisure Centre caters to the local community with three pools, a fitness studio, gym, sauna and steam rooms and the energy sub-committee wanted to introduce energy efficiency measures to reduce the costs. The Centre changed its pool pumps, lighting to LED and upgraded to high efficiency heaters in the saunas alongside the solar panel system. “We have noticed reductions on the meter already and we can see that our bills have dropped greatly,” said Mateusz Slazyk, Assistant Manager, Courtown Adventure and Leisure Centre. “In the end, it was the perfect solution; we were looking for a low maintenance way to produce green energy and solar PV ticked all the boxes.”

now the largest Enphase micro inverter installation in Ireland. As well as the low maintenance that comes with the technology, the high 20-year warranty and remote monitoring were important factors for Courtown Adventure & Leisure Centre when considering all options.

REDUCE

The 197 solar PV panel installation in Courtown is an indication of where the future of energy is heading in Ireland. Solar panel installation continues to grow and this can act as a case in point of how commercially viable solar photovoltaic has become for Irish businesses. Activ8 Energies was chosen to design and install the project and brought its extensive solar PV experience to the site. The company worked through the half hourly readings along with project managers CKEA (Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency) to optimise the size and set up of this heavy consumer of electricity. The centre itself had already taken numerous progressive steps to reduce its consumption over the past year, shaving its peak consumption from an average of 93kVA right down to 71kVA. In line with this great progress, the centre applied for an SEAI grant for the installation of a solar electric system and, with the help of CKEA, was successful in its bid. An important aspect of the project was to install a low maintenance, high warranty solution. With this in mind Enphase micro inverter technology was installed and is

With this 56kWp solar PV system, Courtown Adventure & Leisure Centre will reduce its energy consumption by over 40,000kWhr’s (units of electricity) on a yearly basis. Due to the utilisation of Enphase micro inverters on the job, this system is guaranteed to continue production of electricity for at least 20 years, which leaves the leisure centre with peace of mind that they have locked in the cost of approx. 800,000kWhr’s. So no matter what price electricity reaches over the next 20 years, Courtown Leisure Centre has secured approximately 40,000units of electricity per year, for the next 20 years at approximately 5 cents. Commenting on the project, Aidan Marron of Activ8 Energies, said, “Solar PV has really continued to progress over the years and, with warranties, maintenance and production at the top of the agenda on this project we felt Enphase may be the perfect fit.” The installation consisted of 197 solar panels (generating DC electricity), and 197 micro inverters (converting DC to AC electricity) all mounted on a standing seam mounting system. The installation took four days, with the majority of the heavy lifting completed in just two days. “With solar PV looking to become a larger part of the Irish lexicon over the next five years, it really is great to see SEAI supporting such a system and Wexford County Council helping a forward thinking business such as Courtown Adventure & Leisure Centre become early adopters of what is sure to become the future of energy in Ireland.”

Funding availability Through the SEAI and the Better Energy Community Scheme, many business and local community projects have obtained wide reaching energy upgrades including energy reducing measures and green energy production initiatives. This project was made available to Courtown Adventure & Leisure Centre through this scheme, within the ‘Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme’ under the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport with support from the Wexford County Council. Jane Wickham, of Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (CKEA), explained, “We found Activ8 Solar Energies very knowledgeable and efficient throughout the process, ensuring our client had a comprehensive handover on completion”. Timeguard remains on form

Plug and play LED lighting from Timeguard offers a design edge.

he unwritten law of modern architecture and industrial engineering is that ‘Form follows function’. So surely it follows that, where the form has not changed much, then neither has the function. Just replacing an older bulb for LEDs in an old casing, for instance, is not going to result in much more than a bit of a reduction in running costs. You can also safely assume that, in today’s manufacturing climate where shaving fractions of pennies from costs can be critical, that no-one is going to retool and change the design – the form – for the fun of it. So if it looks different, then it is probably really different and innovative and worth looking into. The key point I am making here is that, while the first thing you’ll notice is that Timeguard products look different and are easy on the eye, all of the changes we make also have

46 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

an engineering function. The distinctive designs that make them such an easy sell to your customers are also the proof of our investment in new engineering and new factory tooling. Take, for example, our current ‘blockbusters’, the NIGHTeye Plus plug and play outdoor LED lighting. They are easy to install and give you the flexibility to choose PIR, photocell or simple on/off activation and simply plug in the appropriate model. Looping out to save money by creating master/slave set ups is straightforward. There’s plenty in it for the customer too - we’ve done away with traditional front windows by beefing up the LED array lenses and the reflector back plates, so they do not need to extra protection. That makes for a sleeker, slimline design. Check the back of the casing for the essential cooling fins which are an integral part of the design, ensuring longer life and, again, enabling us to maintain

an ultra-slim profile without compromise on the performance or life that would be caused by allowing overheating. Our designers’ ability to turn an engineering advantage into a cosmetic plus goes back to the early days of our NIGHTeye mould-breaking ranges. We were first to market in this country with wide-beam LED arrays and back plates that diffused LED light to make it a real contender to replace halogen for security lighting or wherever high-power coverage over a wider area is needed. Our cold-forged cooling pins became a design feature, and our pan-and-tilt heads that make it easy to provide the right light saturation wherever it is needed. Don’t be fooled into thinking that revolutionary new designs are just cosmetic: if it looks new and different and it’s from Timeguard, then there’s an engineering advantage for you and your customers. AFTER 53 YEARS, CEL O’REILLY RETIRES FROM PHILIPS…

And that’s how it’s done O

n January 13, 2017 in the Westbury Hotel, the electrical industry raised their glasses and bid a fond farewell to Cel O’Reilly, the Philips stalwart who started working at the company at the age of 16. Managing Director of Philips Ireland for the past 27 years, Cel O’Reilly knows the lighting sector like no-one else. After completing his Junior Cert in 1963, he left school to take up a junior administration role in Philips. “I had to convince my parents it was a good idea to leave school at a young age but I never had any inclination to go to college. Joining Philips seemed like a good idea so I took up a junior role and after about four months, I was moved to a sales role on a trade counter.” The order desk was next, followed by a position in the lighting department where Cel ended up spending most of his career. “I spent around 17 years working in lighting and, in 1981, I was entrusted with the responsibility of running the lighting sector. It really was a fantastic learning experience.” A further move came in 1988 when Cel was appointed Marketing Director for consumer electronics and domestic appliances. Following this, Cel made Managing Director in 1990. “I was surrounded by efficient, knowledgeable people who ensured my transition was a

48 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

smooth one.” As part of the North South IBEC Council, Cel was instrumental in working to integrate the NI business into Philips Ireland to give a greater economy of scale. “That’s something I’m very proud of. Against the odds, I received permission in 1996 to have an all-Ireland company. Some people were slightly nervous that customers in the North wouldn’t be inclined to do business with the South but I never found that to be the case. Our customers in the North were, and are, terrific to do business with and we certainly never experienced any problems.” Big changes were to come for Cel in the latter end of his career with moves to Brazil and Italy.

OPPORTUNITY “I got a call on the Saturday saying the Brazilian operation needed help and on the Monday, I set off. It was only supposed to be for three months but I ended up staying for nearly a year. In a sense I commuted in that I came back to Ireland every six weeks. It was a fantastic opportunity and an enjoyable experience.” Cel also spent a year and a half in Monza, just outside Milan. “That time spent working away was excellent in terms of learning new skills and indeed, living in such culturally diverse countries was great.” An international project to separate lighting from the rest of Philips is Cel’s last great endeavour in the company. “You can imagine how intricate

a process that was. Take a company like Philips, 125 years old, that started off in lighting – everything is integrated. Separating the two was a complex job. There were 17 teams of people involved and I headed up the global sales and marketing team. It was really successful, finished on time and went live on February 1.” Taking a job in Philips at the age of 16 and ending up as Managing Director is probably Cel’s greatest achievement. He has seen his fair share of changes in the lighting industry over the years, the most transformative being the introduction of LEDs. “At the moment, they represent just over 50% of our business and it continues to grow rapidly. When they were first introduced, we referred to them as disruptive technology, such was their impact on the industry. Now, they have transformed the business. We’re working on Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork at the moment which, when completed, will feature dynamic LED lighting, meaning lights will come on and off instantly at the touch of a button. The new lighting scheme will also enhance the use of the stadium for other events such as concerts.. You won’t sell conventional lighting to an office block anymore; it must be LEDs.” Cel founded the Irish Electrical Benevolent Association in 2000. Offering support to members of the electrical industry who are experiencing tough times, he will continue his work in

the Association throughout his retirement. Cel is also a director at WEEE Ireland so runs no risk of being idle now that he has left Philips. “I’m still very active. I think I’d find it very hard to just stop. Alongside my involvement in the IEBA and WEEE Ireland, I play golf so I’d like to do more of that. I also have two grandchildren - two boys aged two-and-a-half and one-and-ahalf. They keep myself and my wife busy and it’s great to be able to spend more time with them.” Cel leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in Philips and indeed in the Irish lighting industry which will be impossible to match. What will he miss the most? “Over the years I received offers from other firms to go and work for them but I always thought, why would I give this up for something inferior? Philips is an excellent company to work for. They’re innovative and they constantly strive to improve. Every year they invest 5-7% of their revenue into R&D and the results speak for themselves. “Personally, my own ethos has always been to put the customer first. People talk a lot about it but I’ve always found that if you look after your customer you’ll be rewarded through repeat business and a loyal customer base. That belief has seen me through my career and after 53 years at Philips, I can say it’s been the right one!”

fter scoring success at the award-winning IFA National Football Stadium at Windsor Park, William Coates Ltd has made a splash at the new Olympia Leisure Centre. Located in the shadow of the impressive new stadium – it shares a roof with the new West Stand – the new-build project is much more than the traditional swimming pool and sports hall it has replaced. Instead, the Belfast City Council facilities form part of a new sporting and community hub, with the Olympia Leisure Centre combining leisure facilities such as gym, swimming and sports hall with exciting new offerings such as a day spa and coffee corner. Run by GLL, the Belfast City Councilowned facility was part funded by the former Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) as part of an overall contribution of the Windsor Park redevelopment. Just as the company did at the redeveloped national football stadium, William Coates Ltd worked closely with main contractor, O’Hare & McGovern, on the Olympia Leisure Centre, with the two projects overlapping at one stage. The fact that William Coates was already familiar with the site put the company in the driving seat in terms of the on-site logistics but, overall, these two projects were completely separate. The new Olympia Leisure Centre replaced the existing facilities, with g

g the former building being demolished to provide car-parking and free up space for the final stage of the project, which involves the creation of a new boulevard, play space and 3G pitch. For the Olympia Leisure Centre, William Coates Ltd completed an extensive list of work, ranging from HV and LV switch boards and communication systems through to general and emergency lighting, fire and security systems and building management systems. The new centre features two swimming pools, a 120-station gym, a spin studio, a main sports hall, exercise studio, day space, coffee shop and meeting rooms in addition to staff facilities. With so many facilities – all with their own distinct requirements – under one roof, the project became a bit of a jigsaw puzzle for William Coates Ltd, particularly in terms of the lighting aspect of the work. Gary Coleman, Electrical Contracts Director at William Coates Ltd,

explained, “The lighting has been designed to create a cohesive theme throughout the building, but there are distinct differences that illustrate the individual requirements of each area.” The perfect example of this is the lighting in the swimming pool area,

“We recognise the value of a strong workforce that is capable of meeting the highest standards.” which has extensive uplighting and downlighting around the perimeter, rather than overhead lighting. This provides an impressive aesthetic but is also forward-thinking in terms of maintenance requirements. Yet within the adjoining changing village, a continuous LED strip provides a seamless visual.

This style of lighting is in contrast to the impressive fittings used in the reception areas and the practical style in areas such as the gym and the sports hall. William Coates also had to ensure that the systems in each area met exacting specification and safety standards. However, having met the extensive UEFA Stadium Category 4 standards at Windsor Park, these were pretty straightforward in comparison. Standards of a different type were also in evidence in areas such as the gym where the design was of an industrial style. With exposed ceilings and steel beams, it wasn’t a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ for the electrical wiring. “The sports hall had to meet professional sporting standards, with badminton seen as the highest level,” added Gary. “Of course, there is a high level of safety that has to be taken into consideration when dealing with water around the pool and changing rooms, so there was plenty

of variety on this project in terms of the different regulations and standards we had to meet. “On a new build project such as this, planning ahead for these challenges is a lot easier. Overall, the project ran very smoothly, with no real difficulties overall. “A lot of that is down to our own experience, but the fact that we had completed such complex work at Windsor Park with the same main contractor also helped.” Gary concluded, “Our work on the IFA National Football Stadium at Windsor Park closely followed by the Olympia Leisure Centre offered completely different challenges but I think it demonstrates that we have the experience and ability to meet wideranging projects. “You don’t get to do a stadium that often and, to a certain extent, leisure centres aren’t all that common either, yet we have still managed to maintain the same high standard of work. Most

companies would have been happy to have completed either of these projects, so to have been involved in both showcases our commitment to quality.” Following the dual completion of the IFA National Football Stadium at

“We will continue to explore new areas of growth and develop opportunities.” Windsor Park and the Olympia Leisure Centre, William Coates Ltd is clearly fighting fit and the company is set to continue to make great strides forward this year. Further expansion within the GB market is set to be coupled with a return to carrying out projects in the Republic of Ireland as well as a continuation of high

profile projects in Northern Ireland. Managing Director, Paul Dickson, explained, “Firstly, we are delighted to have completed the M&E services at the new Olympia Leisure Centre, which follow on from our work at Windsor Park. Over the years, we have worked closely with Belfast City Council and the Olympia adds to our growing portfolio of leisure facilities and services. “These two projects have played a major role in the continued expansion of the company over the last three years. “Our turnover has grown significantly with projects having been completed in Northern Ireland and across Great Britain. This has included work for many prestigious clients, including Standard Life, Kier, Bouygues, BT and Bombardier, to name but a few. “From this strong foundation, we will continue to explore new areas of growth and develop new opportunities.”

A

tlas has completed the supply and commissioning of a complete security system for the new Olympia Leisure Centre in Belfast. The new-build project beside the award-winning IFA National Football Stadium at Windsor Park is set to provide extensive facilities for local people, and adding an impressive level of protection are a wide range of products from Atlas. The award-winning company supplied and commissioned a complete CCTV system alongside access control panels for the main hall and the pool changing areas. The project also included disabled refuge alarm systems, toilet alarms, intruder alarms and emergency and incident alarms throughout the facility.

David Dalzell, Technical Sales Consultant at Atlas, explained, “This is a comprehensive project and one that demonstrates the breadth of products that we are able to supply and commission. We worked closely with William Coates Ltd both in the lead up to the project, on site, and throughout the final commissioning process. Our focus was to ensure the project ran smoothly and despite the scale of the new leisure centre we didn’t face any real issues. We are delighted to have had the opportunity to build a strong relationship with William Coates Ltd and look forward to working with them in the future.” This project has signalled another strong step forward for the company since it underwent a rebrand at the

beginning of last year that better reflects the broad spectrum of specialist areas that Atlas focuses on. These include fire and security systems, energy, AV and assisted technology and also maintenance of all systems. This holistic approach has, quite literally, matched the company’s new maxim and has made a ‘World of Difference’ for customers. While Atlas has continued to offer each service independently, many customers have taken the opportunity to benefit from the overall provision on offer. The company has continued to be specified as a Tier 1 supplier on many projects and will look to build on this success in the future, both in Northern Ireland and beyond.

Façade & Sports Hall Lighting OLYMPIA LEISURE CENTRE, BELFAST

Thorn’s HiPak Pro LED in the new main sports at Olympia Leisure Centre.

CHALLENGES OF EXTERIOR LIGHTING ALONGSIDE THE MAIN SPORTS HALL ARE MET BY THORN’S ATTENTION-TO-DETAIL…

Thorn meets specific requirements both inside and out

T

horn’s ability to provide specific lighting solutions came to the fore during the Olympia Leisure Centre project. A globally trusted supplier of outdoor and indoor luminaires with integrated controls, Thorn’s main focus at the new leisure centre was the façade lighting and the sports hall lighting. “Both had very specific requirements that we had to meet,” explained Stephen Woolsey, Key Account Manager at Thorn. “We already have a strong relationship with William Coates Ltd and worked closely alongside them and the architect to ensure the highest standards.” As the Olympia Leisure Centre is quite literally in the shadow of the new IFA National Football Stadium at Windsor

Park, the view was that it had to stand out. Thorn was able to achieve this with the Satin Linear LED – a discreet wall washing linear floodlight that provides efficient and effective illumination to highlight the blue limestone cladding façade. While aesthetics was the main concern for the façade, in the main sports hall the focus was on practicality, with the HiPak Pro LED Sport range ticking all the necessary boxes in terms of uniformity, low glare and high efficiency. This range has been specifically designed for sports hall applications and is perfect for a multi-sports facility such as this at Olympia. “We provided a full lighting design service on both aspects of this project and, for the façade lighting, we

had to create a visualisation for the client,” added Stephen. “The quality of our range is well known, but with the lighting design service it means the products are utilised to optimum levels.” As part of the Zumtobel Group, Thorn has been able to add to an already extensive range of products to meet specific niche applications, including architectural, decorative external and industrial lighting. Thorn is now the exclusive distributor of the ACDC, SIMES and Reiss brands in Northern Ireland, giving the company an increased ability to service more projects. “This has been a real boost to us in Northern Ireland and will be good news for our customers,” concluded Stephen.

A FIRST FOR THIS NEW LIGHTING DESIGN AND DISTRIBUTION COMPANY PROVES A REAL SUCCESS…

Project is a Dlight!

D

light may be a relatively new name in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, but that wasn’t reflected in the company’s involvement at the Olympia Leisure Centre. While the company was established in 2006 and has worked on projects all over the world, the work at the Olympia Leisure Centre represented one of Dlight’s first in Northern Ireland. It is also a good example of the high levels it can deliver. A lighting design and distribution company, Dlight supplied two main product ranges, via WS Mercer, Belfast, for this project. The distinctive donut shaped lighting in the reception area is from the Lightnet range while the impressive downlights and colour-

changing LED tape lighting in the new spa area are from another German manufacturer, PROLED. Iain Kelly, Director at Dlight, said, “We work with architects, designers, consultants and contractors to highlight the quality of our product range and, on this occasion, we were involved with AECOM to meet both the aesthetic and practical requirements of the project. “We were able to offer the PROLED range as an alternative to the originally specified range while the Lightnet fittings matched the criteria. We’ve used similar fittings for Yahoo’s European HQ in Dublin, so we know the Lightnet range is not only popular but very distinctive.” He added, “This was the first major project for us in Northern Ireland and we

were delighted to be involved. We built up a great relationship with AECOM and also with William Coates Ltd, who we were working with for the first time. Dlight has just finished Google’s offices in Dublin and EMEA Twitter in Dublin, using Lightnet as the company’s preferred lighting partner. “We take a very proactive and hands on approach and I think that can make all the difference. In addition to Lightnet and PROLED, we also represent high quality European brands including AXOLight, Buck, Vibia, Ilfanale, Moltoluce, Slamp and Rovasi “The fact that we can also offer lighting design services is also an important aspect of business improved particularly successful at the Olympia Leisure Centre.”

ager continued to show the company’s sporting prowess at the Olympia Leisure Centre with another brilliant performance. Following up successful projects for the new homes of rugby and football in Northern Ireland, Hager has replicated this success for this impressive new leisure facility in Belfast. Once again, the company’s relationship in designing boards with panel builder partner, Hanover Systems, was again to the fore. “Our work at the Kingspan Stadium, which is the home of Ulster Rugby, and at the redeveloped IFA National Football Stadium at Windsor Park are real feathers in our cap and, in many ways, the Olympia Leisure Centre project replicated this success,”

explained Mervyn Knox, Area Sales Manager for Hager Northern Ireland. “We already have strong relationships with both William Coates Ltd and Hanover Systems and this helped to ensure that we met the strict deadlines set. We worked closely and in partnership at both the design stage and on-site with our focus at all times to make the installation process as quick as possible.” Hager products and solutions used at the Olympia Leisure Centre included Invicta 3 panel boards; JK Invicta 3 MCB boards, contactors, RCBOs and MCBs; and main switchboards, MCCB devices. Also supplied by Hager were Invicta 3 Type 3 distribution boards and h3 MCCB devices. h3 is Hager’s new range of MCCBs

that provide safe and easy solutions for low voltage electrical circuit protection. The-state-of-the-art circuit breakers offer both designers and installers a wide range of features and benefits. Special attention has been given to ergonomics, especially with the integration of these devices into the TP&N and panel board range. Mervyn concluded, “Hager is a global business with real, local expertise. Our products combine engineering, design and innovation to create a market-leading portfolio covering the full spectrum of electrical power distribution, and this enables us to match the right solution to the right requirement - all backed up by rapid delivery and expert technical support.”

he distinctive LED lighting in the changing room area and new spa at the Olympia Leisure Centre is manufactured by WILA. Representing the company’s first project in Northern Ireland, WILA has delivered an eye-catching yet practical lighting solution on a project that has a strong focus on lighting. “That is the balance we always aim to achieve,” explained Commercial Director, Richard Merchant. “As commercial lighting manufacturers, the practical aspect is clearly essential, but we also pride ourselves on ensuring strong aesthetics as well.

We demonstrated that again on the Olympia project.” The WILA Linic 150 is a continuous lighting line and was installed in the changing room area while the Linic 60, a narrow IP54 fittings, was installed in the new spa area. Both products were specified by the electrical consultant, ARUP. Richard added, “We supplied all the products directly to William Coates Ltd. While this was a first for us in Northern Ireland, the whole process ran quite smoothly and working with such a proactive contractor as William Coates Ltd was a breath of fresh air.”

WILA is part of the Nordeon group of companies, which collectively covers a wide range of specific lighting requirements, ranging from production, warehouse, supermarket and fashion requirements to office, showroom, electronics and outdoor applications. “We have well defined companies that tailor lighting products to meet a wide range of specific applications within the lighting sector,” added Richard. “Energy efficiency is foremost in our entire product range, all of which is designed and manufactured with the installation and the functionality in mind.”

Meeting high standards AMANDA MCCLOSKEY, ETT, OUTLINES THE IMPORTANCE OF EXAM STANDARDS...

A

t ETT we make use of standards set out by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) when conducting exams. We do this to ensure high quality and eliminate the possibility of malpractice by our staff or candidates. Unfortunately fake and fraudulent certificates are out there. From time to time, we come across image spliced documents, and have received feedback from customers on the practice of rogue training providers. One recent exam candidate said, “The standards at ETT are much higher than I’ve experienced before, and rightly so… You can be sure that a certificate gained at ETT has been through preparation and hard work” Here is a summary of some of the key JCQ standards: • Candidates entering the exam room must not communicate in any way with another candidate • A lecturer who delivers the subject must not be an invigilator • Invigilators must be suitably qualified and experienced

• • •

Invigilators under no circumstances should communicate with candidates (except where maintaining discipline in the room) Under no circumstances should centre staff enter the exam room with the sole intention of accessing the question paper, approach candidates either to prompt them to make an attempt at the exam, provide support and encouragement or read candidates’ scripts Unused question papers must be shredded

When deciding on where to train, choose wisely. Select a training provider who meets the high standards that are set by the awarding body. If something doesn’t feel right, report it immediately to the awarding body. Don’t let your hard work be tarnished by the bad practice of a rogue provider.

Wise men opt for qualified future Three experienced workers have joined the 2017 quest to become fully qualified electricians. ETT’s Chris Walker added the trio to the first City & Guilds 2356-99 program of the year. The program facilitates electrical workers who have acquired an abundance of knowledge and experience but have been unable to complete an industry approved apprenticeship. The course is scheduled for completion within one year of the commencement date. Candidates can opt to complete earlier if they can produce sufficient evidence. Chris provided the following outline which may be helpful to those thinking about this route. “Candidates must have sufficient prior knowledge and experience,” he said. “We usually determine eligibility following an initial telephone-based assessment. The course will be best suited to those who have had a range of experience in commercial, industrial and domestic environments.” The course requires a minimum period of 12 weeks to complete. Evidence to support the process must be submitted within a period of two years from the date on which the assessment commences. If you know or employ someone who is interested in learning more about the option to become fully qualified, please invite them to contact Chris Walker on 028 25650 750 or by e-mailing chris@ett-ni.org

While the UK Government continues to set out its exit plan, Northern Ireland’s political upheaval means we may not even be at the negotiating table. That will affect the province’s unique position as being the only part of the UK with a land border with an EU country. That is all set against the backdrop of Trump’s election success. Within this vacuum ,and without any real clarity, vital decisions on investment and new projects have been largely put on hold. Some of the major PLCs have

been restructuring while the changes have placed pressure on the independents. As firms decide whether or not to stick or twist, this will eventually change. But, in the short term, the emphasis is very much on a volatile currency market and how it is affecting product prices. And the bad news is that prices are going up. The London Metal Exchange (LME) is the global benchmark for base metals and it isn’t offering any real signs of hope. With so many products in the electrical sector including some level of metal content, these global trends have left the sector exposed. Manufacturers have been issuing warnings about price increases, leaving wholesalers across Northern Ireland with a lot to weigh up. Unsurprisingly, no one can expect the electrical wholesalers winthin the overall supply chain to be in a position to absorb ever-increasing costs on everything.

Regardless of the product, virtually everyone will see prices increase. With no real stabilisation in sight, these internal debates will continue. Some manufacturers are offering a compromise of applying a temporary price surcharge that can be removed, or at least reduced, should the market settle down. Others have simply been putting prices up. Either way, wholesalers have had to make the difficult decision to increase costs. It’s not just metal prices, however, that are causing problems. Whilst the Eurozone has a bearing on the sector’s supply chain, the world trades on the Dollar and, as it fluctuates the global currency market will continue to hit every sector. For manufacturers, wholesalers, installers and end-users there is little that can be done to influence this chain of events, other than to put faith in the world’s politicians that they will realise that stability is the key to success.

TOOLS

KLAUKE LAUNCHES NEW WIDE-RANGE BOOTLACE FERRULE CRIMPING TOOL…

Why use 3 tools when 1 will do it all!

W

ith the K 30/6 K, Klauke has introduced a neat solution for crimping insulated and non-insulated bootlace ferrules from 0.08 – 16mm2 onto the market. Normally to cover this range of wire sizes, an installer would typically require at least three different tools. Now with just a single tool, the installer can keep the weight and cost of his tool bag to a minimum. The clever mechanism has a smooth ratchet control which moves six precise jaws, producing a neat hexagonal crimped result. This has the benefit of ensuring the termination remains as round as possible, fitting directly into the equipment without any need for ‘rounding’ square corners. To ensure the ferrule is always located exactly in the middle of the jaws, a

clever positioner has been added to keep the ferrules centred. This guide can be relocated on the reverse side for left-handed users. Under the part number K306K, it can handle both single and double-entry ferrules and possesses the quality you would expect from a German-made product. It features non-slip handles and a name tag field inside the handle to identify it’s yours. The launch of the K 30/6 K is part of a wide range of impressive products developed by the experts at Klauke. The new product is available from all branches of Demesne Electrical Sales. For more information or for a demonstration, contact Klauke. T: (NI) 01986 891 519 or (RoI) 0044 1986 891 519 E: sales@Klauke.textron.com W: www.klauke.com

INTERCONNECTOR UPDATE

GREEN LIGHT FOR NORTH-SOUTH INTERCONNECTOR PLANS...

Pylon pressure fails as key project gets approval

A

n Bord Pleanala has given the controversial North-South Interconnector the go-ahead. Due to run from Batterstown in Meath to Turleenan in Co Tyrone, construction of the Interconnector will increase the capacity and the reliability of interconnection between the two networks. It will allow the two independent networks to operate together as if they were one system. This increase in interconnection capacity will eliminate current restrictions in cross border support if a shortage of electricity in one jurisdiction were to happen. EirGrid has also stated that operating the two networks as if they were one system will bring cost savings for all electricity consumers as larger electricity systems can be operated more efficiently. In its decision to approve the

78 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

scheme, An Bord Pleanala said the Interconnector would remove existing restrictions that limit cross border electricity flows and provide benefits to the economies of both jurisdictions and for individual consumers. It also said that having considered the alternatives, a 400 kilovolt overhead line would be the most appropriate and cost effective solution for current requirements. Authorities in Northern Ireland haven’t approved the proposed section of the project planned across the border yet. The Chief Executive of Eirgrid welcomed the decision by An Bord Pleanála, saying the interconnector was a “critical piece of national infrastructure”. He also recognised the concerns and issues that exist but added that Eirgrid was committed to working to try and address them.

EASIER ACCESS EVEN IN SMALL SPACES...

Bahco’s new ‘slim blade’ screwdriver solves old problem

B

ahco designers have solved a problem many electricians have wrestled with for years: how to reach sunken screws and spring elements in tight spaces, such as consumer units, safely and easily. Not only is the blade of the new ‘Slim’ 1000V insulated screwdriver, which Bahco manufactures, 30% narrower than others but its ergonomic handle is slimmer too. With many 1000v screwdrivers the insulation often obstructs and prevents access to low lying fasteners. Bahco’s solution reduces the blade diameter and uses integrated protective insulation. The new screwdriver also enables a higher transfer of force with less effort, while its ergonomic features protect hands from the risk of muscle strain or injury. Safety has always been a top priority for Bahco. All the brand’s insulated screwdrivers are water bath tested at 10,000v to ensure safe working at 1000v, fully meeting the IEC 60900 Standard. The quality of the ‘Slim’ screwdriver’s blade exceeds current standards relating to hardness by 130% and in relation to torque strength by 200%. Several materials, each with individual properties, are used to make the ergonomic handle. A resistant plastic is used for the core, ensuring that the blade is held securely, even under high strain. A softer material is used for the coloured zones, providing high frictional resistance and allowing the transfer of high forces, resulting in less screwdriving effort being required. Screw head symbols and tip size identification markings make it easier for electricians to find the screwdriver they need for each task. Visit www.bahco.com to see the full Bahco range of electricians’ insulated screwdrivers, side cutting pliers and other tools designed for professional use.

LIGHTING

LEDs to light up Co Kerry P

ublic lighting is a major cost for county councils up and down the country. Not only is it expensive, but the old, inadequate schemes lighting up Ireland’s towns and cities are, for the most part, extremely inefficient in terms of energy. Last May, Kerry County Council adopted a new public lighting policy that will see energy efficient LED lights replace existing lights in an effort to adhere to 2020 energy targets. Street lighting costs the council €2million every year which amounts to nearly half its total energy bill. New and improved energy efficient LED street lighting would cut that cost by over €1million a year and

“ The cost of replacing that amount of lights is huge, and it’s not just an issue for Kerry; this is a national issue.”

provide more focused lighting in areas where it’s needed. In 1998 there were approximately 4,100 public lights in Kerry. Eighteen years later, that number has jumped to nearly 13,000. According to Director of Services at the Council Charlie O’Sullivan, the effects of climate change and rising sea levels have been particularly noticeable in Kerry and have highlighted the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the carbon footprint. Although the new lighting policy has been approved by the council’s Special Policy Committee, funding remains a significant barrier. Commenting on the policy, Brian Lenihan at Kerry County Council said: “The cost of replacing that amount of lights is huge and it’s not just an issue for Kerry; this is a national issue. Funding is extremely constrained right across the country.” This issue is, says Brian, being addressed nationally and a funding model

that would implement the policy is being investigated. “We’re limited in relation to what we can actually achieve at the moment so although the policy has been passed, we’re not in a position to move on it just yet. Our focus is on upgrading the existing lighting infrastructure with a limited number of new street lights to be installed if necessary.” As they require little maintenance and last longer, the new lights will pay for themselves; a 70W SON lantern public light on a 6m steel column costs €1,469 but a 34W LED lantern would cost less in the long term. Another reason for Kerry to review its lighting requirements is its status of a 700sq km area designated as an international Dark Sky Reserve, an area that boasts some of the world’s best views of stars at night. The intention is to take the glare out of the 400 lights in the core reserve area of Kells to Caherdaniel, an area where Star Wars was filmed.
