MEW LIGHT ON THE HORIZON FOR EAST BELFAST

ENGINEERING SECTOR UNFAZED BY BREXIT The building services engineering sector - which makes up 40% of the UK’s construction and maintenance industry - believes it will successfully weather the outcome of Brexit over the next few years. That’s according to major new survey findings from the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) and Scotland’s trade association for the electrical industry SELECT. Almost half of survey respondents (46%) believe that Brexit will have a positive impact on their company in just five years’ time, with less than one in five (19%) saying it will have a negative impact (23% said it would have no discernible impact). However, the largest contractors in the survey (with over £20million turnover) are slightly less optimistic about the shortterm business prospects than smaller contractors. The sector puts maintaining access to the EU Single Market at the top of its list of Brexit aspirations,

closely followed by more control of employment law, and the need to negotiate non-EU trade deals. Despite the general positivity about Brexit, 47% of respondents say they believe that the cost of materials will rise as a result, while only 22% do not think that Brexit will cause this to happen. Reflecting a general tendency to use skilled UK rather than EU workers, the vast majority (92%) of respondents say they ‘do not rely on EU migrant workers’, and only 25% agree that Brexit would ‘worsen the shortage of qualified workers’. In addition, just one in six respondents (17%) said that maintaining freedom of movement was their top priority. ECA CEO, Steve Bratt, commented, “No matter how our relationship with Europe develops, our sector has a huge role to play in achieving UK business growth. This includes providing skilled jobs, fully functional buildings and infrastructure, and UK energy security.” W: www.eca.co.uk

Mew Island Lighthouse Optic will have a bright future as the ‘iconic gateway’ to Belfast Waterfront, with the appointment of local architects, Hall McKnight. Hall McKnight was named winner of a competition (organised in partnership with the Royal Society of Ulster Architects) to design a structure to house the 130-year-old lighthouse optic, and was chosen ahead of 11 international firms to create an iconic structure to protect, preserve and provide public access to the Mew Island Lighthouse Optic, which will be located in Titanic Quarter. Mew Island lighthouse, on the outermost of the Copeland Islands, is one of the tallest lighthouses in Ireland. W: titanic-foundation.org

60TH ANNIVERSARY FOR NICEIC This year marks an important milestone for NICEIC as it celebrates its 60th anniversary. The UK’s leading voluntary body for electrical contractors was officially incorporated on August 10, 1956. The National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting as it was first known, started out with 3,500 contractors on its roll. Today, it has more than 19,000 Approved Contractors and an additional 9,000 domestic installers – making it the UK’s largest and most recognised voluntary body within the electrical industry. NATIONAL ELECTRICAL WHOLESALERS OPENS NEW STORE IN CASTLEDERMOT

INNOVATIVE SCHEME AIMED AT INCREASING APPRENTICESHIPS IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY LAUNCHED Four Irish construction companies are participating in a pilot programme where apprentices spend time with each company whilst learning a trade and other critical career skills. The scheme is being run in conjunction with Solas, and the industry is hoping for a national rollout of the scheme on the basis that it could radically increase the quantity of quality apprenticeships in the industry. This comes at a time when activity in the industry is rapidly increasing and the demand for skills is approaching peak levels. The four companies participating in the pilot are Clancy Construction, Cleary Doyle, Mythen Construction and Anthony Neville Homes. They will

effectively share apprentices between them during the four-year term of their apprenticeships. This allows participating companies to share the costs associated with apprenticeships, whilst allowing participants to get a wider range of skills and experiences that will increase their employability in the industry. The pilot scheme is focussed initially on increasing the uptake of apprenticeships in the wet trades such as plastering and concrete work. The CIF has also recently established a website portal, aimed at companies and students interested in pursuing a construction apprenticeship. For further information, visit apprentices.ie or cif.ie

National Electrical Wholesalers has expanded its operation with the opening of a new electrical store in County Kildare. The Castledermot branch will complement National’s existing Naas branch, and will be the group’s seventh branch in Ireland and its 17th branch in Ireland and the UK. Open to both trade and public, the new store, at 18 Main Street, Castledermot, was officially opened on August 20 by Ireland, Lions and Leinster rugby star, Sean O’Brien. “We were honoured to have our local hero, Sean O’Brien officially open the store for us,” said Manager, Larry Malone. “It was a great day and was attended by members of the public as well as trade, with plenty of refreshments, raffle prizes and special offers on the day.” “We look forward to meeting and working with new customers in the area and the surrounding areas of Carlow and Kilkenny. National Electrical Wholesalers offers great value together with strong brands. We have energy saving products and lighting solutions for every application, backed up by our dedicated, knowledgeable staff to help customers get the best service possible” T: (RoI) 059 915 8060 or (NI) 00353 59 915 8060 E: larry@new.ie W: www.new.ie

COVER STORY

Timeguard cooling fins are essential to prolong product life but they can look good too.

These pure white NIGHTeye Plus models will hardly be seen against a white soffit or fascia background.

WE NEED TO LOOK AT LEDS IN AN ENTIRELY NEW WAY AND GRASP THE OPPORTUNITIES, SAYS ANDY DOUGLAS, MANAGING DIRECTOR, TIMEGUARD…

LED - more than a replacement for old lighting

L

EDs have conquered pretty much every lighting application – but smaller commercial premises seem to have been slower than others to make the switch, largely because the prevailing technology – T5 – is still reasonably efficient for diffused area lighting. In an economic climate where the focus has been on cash flow, the numbers just haven’t quite added up for capital expenditure on a wholesale upgrade to LED. However, it is commercial premises that stand to gain the biggest payback from LED because their occupants can exercise precision control via radial wiring systems with zoning, timing, lux sensitivity etc. The tide of change is unstoppable. LED lighting is inevitably at the top of the list of recommendations in any energy audit; but, perhaps, the firms in the second and subsequent waves can benefit from newer thinking which suggests that LED lighting

should be more than just a replacement for fluorescent, incandescent and halogen. HUMAN CENTRIC LIGHTING We need to look at LEDs in an entirely new way and grasp the opportunities to make real changes to living and working spaces. There were some spectacular ideas on show at this year’s Light+Building, Europe’s annual flagship lighting fair in Frankfurt, where a top theme was human-centric lighting. The idea behind human-centric lighting is to support the human biorhythm and enhance physical performance and wellbeing. In plain English, it’s all about digital control and making best use of advances in lamps (for which, these days, read LEDs). Lighting becomes an independent design feature: lamps and luminaires are smaller and more efficient, and they fit discretely into the architecture and interior design. It’s a world away from traditional wall or

ceiling fittings, but it’s not just art for art’s sake. Human-centric lighting is known to boost performance, make people feel better and even promote healing processes. For instance, last year’s ‘Clever Classrooms’ report from the University of Salford showed improvements in the learning progress of primary school pupils of as much as 16% in a single year.

MEANWHILE IN 2016… While most of the sophisticated ideas shown at Frankfurt are not going to find their way into your refurbishments and refits this year, they will undoubtedly be seeding ideas. After all, office space doesn’t come cheap, nor do staff, and whether a business employs 10 people or 1,000, it is essential to optimise their productivity – and generating a sense of well-being is necessary to achieve that. Lighting can be personalised at an individual level, while at the same time reducing energy use and lowering maintenance costs.

COVER STORY

Tough profiled and recessed reflector plates.

Easy access to terminal block(s) for quick installation.

Here the plug-in photocell option has been chosen.

The design of Timeguard LED arrays and reflectors is not just there for good looks - it also determines the quality of light emitted.

Of course, the least costly light of all is the one that is switched off and, therefore, controlling the lighting is an essential part of the installation. Just because LEDs consume less power does not mean that you can cut corners with control and leave them switched on when not needed: timing, zoning and dimming are now the norm. In larger installations, these are likely to involve wi-fi, power line or, increasingly, dedicated KNX open protocol cabling. In SME environments, PIR detection and local timed/zoned switching are used. PIR detectors come in many shapes and forms but, as with any device, ‘caveat emptor’. Yes, the price has fallen as the market has grown, but, there is a bottom line below which you should not go – especially when switching LEDs. The PIR switches have to be able to cope with the initial surge current. If they are not actually tried and tested as being suitable for use with LEDs, then they are not going to be a

reliable option in a busy workplace where switching may be frequent. Check the specification, check the box, and look for branded and guaranteed quality.

SMART SWITCHES Smart wall switches offer options for programmed timing, delay switching, switching in response to lux levels or noise and remote control. However, they all seem to share one problem: the LED lights seem to flicker when they are switched off. This is because two-wire smart switches need to draw a small amount of power through the switched live connection to operate the switch whilst in standby. While such currents are far too low to have caused an issue with older lighting technologies, they are sufficient to cause the LED lamps to flicker. This is an issue that has now been solved with Timeguard’s

patented ZV900 universal Automatic Switch Load Controller. It’s a compact device, fitted one per lighting circuit, and which neatly tucks through a standard 50mm aperture. It has the added advantage of providing built-in surge and current inrush suppression. LED lighting, now that it is dimmable, available in different colours and easily controlled by smart switches (when used with our automatic switch load controller), is widely accepted for both commercial and home use. There is still huge potential to integrate the control of lighting and heating/air conditioning but, for now, they seem to be seen as quite separate services. For installers, the quick wins are to be had from timed, PIR and lux level switching which add extra value to a basic LED lighting installation.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

PAUL REEVE CFIOSH, DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS SERVICES, ECA, AND STEVE BRAWLEY, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, JOINT INDUSTRY BOARD, LOOK AT HOW THE TWO ORGANISATIONS ARE PUTTING OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH ISSUES CENTRE STAGE…

Health of electrical workers now in focus

R

ecent safety statistics from the Joint Industry Board (JIB) and the ECA show that the electrotechnical sector has made remarkable progression reducing the rate of accidents. In fact, the reportable accident rate for 2015 is now only 16% of what it was in 2001 – effectively meaning that, for every six accidents that occurred 15 years ago, nowadays there is just one. But while we know a lot about our safety performance, one of the issues facing the sector is that there isn’t even a ‘go to’ definition of occupational health (OH). Ten occupational health specialists in one room will probably give you a dozen definitions. So, to contribute to the debate, the ECA recently worked with partners, including the JIB, on a major survey to find out how the sector is currently faring on OH. Completed by nearly 400 respondents - mainly directors and managers - during March and April, the survey provided a unique insight into OH across our sector.

www.elecmagazine.com

FOLLOW US ON:

“ECA recently worked with partners, including the JIB, on a major survey to find out how the sector is currently faring on OH.”

Survey respondents were given a ‘working definition’ of OH, specifically to: “eliminate or sufficiently control significant exposure to work-related physical or mental health and disease, and monitoring the effects on individuals, as necessary”. This definition was widely backed by respondents (just 3% disagreed), and is therefore useful moving forward. When asked about the biggest health hazards in the sector, there were few surprises - more than 9 in 10 firms cited asbestos, with nearly 8 in 10 highlighting silica, as a particular cause for concern in the electrical sector. Between them, asbestos and silica cause thousands of fatalities across construction. Other hazards frequently cited included noise, mental health and manual handling. Overall, almost three-quarters of survey respondents said they already actively managed occupational health. However, less than half said they engaged in occupational health surveillance, while just 6 in 10 said they incorporate managing mental

health. The vast majority of firms (80%) did, however, recognise that worker mental health would become increasingly important.

CHAT At present, members of the JIB (which ECA members can join without paying the normal JIB subscription) have access to Constructing Better Health’s ‘Construction Health Action Toolkit’ (CHAT), an interactive system for managing occupational health, through the purchase of JIB Benefit Credits for their employees. In addition, the ECA’s e-RAMS software allows members to identify on-site health hazards, such as asbestos or manual handing, and then undertake a risk assessment to help control significant risks. Moving forward, both the ECA and JIB will be undertaking evidencebased OH initiatives within the electrical and building services sector to put the ‘health’ into health and safety at work. METERAC COMBINES EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE TO PROVIDE EXCELLENCE...

The real power behind the brand

I

n recent years, Metartec has quietly gone from being the ‘new kid on the block’ to becoming the backbone of the critical power industry, by supporting customer supply chains and providing the power to major projects in both the UK and Ireland. In a market where well-known brands can take precedence, Metartec is chosen for high-profile projects due to its different approach to the marketplace, offering own-brand, open-protocol equipment that is combined with a personal service from a highly experienced technical and commercial team. For many customers, the choice for purchasing a branded UPS is to remove the fear of the unknown. What should be made known is that UPS Original Design Manufacturers (ODM) in many ways work similarly to that of the automotive industry. Key components for a vehicle carcass are used for all cars - the only difference in the finished product is the exterior and brand logo. This is what the customer is buying. The same principle applies in the creation of UPS. With only a few leading global manufacturers, the essence of each UPS is essentially the same. So, what then are customers paying for? Metartec defines four points when evaluating equipment prices and the actual

cost of ownership of your UPS system – these are Capital expenditure; Operational expenditure; Sourcing of components and sub-assemblies; and Technical expertise. UÊÊCapital expenditure is the initial purchase cost associated with UPS equipment. Metartec offers own-brand equipment ensuring best value for money with no hidden costs. UÊOperating expenditure can quickly exceed the cost of the initial investment of a UPS. Efficiency plays a significant role in reducing both energy and financial costs over the lifespan of a UPS system. Metartec’s DECI Modular 300 X9i is one of the highest power density products on the market with hot swappable modular design. The system incorporates the latest ‘hibernation technology’ ensuring maximum energy efficiency through product lifespan. The company’s range of open protocol UPSs also allows the end-user to choose their service provider, achieving greater flexibility and lowering costs. U Sourcing of components and subassemblies can increase the cost of ownership of a UPS system in the longterm. Metartec readily sources UPS components from an open market, ensuring the most competitive pricing and fastest turn around on spare parts.

CASE STUDY – GRANT THORNTON, DUBLIN

ROBUS LIGHTING PROVIDES ENERGY-EFFICIENT SOLUTION TO DUBLIN OFFICES OF GRANT THORNTON…

Lower lighting bills with ROBUS

T

he experts from ROBUS Lighting have provided Grant Thornton with an energy-saving lighting upgrade in its Dublin offices. The new lighting has significantly improved the office environment and is reducing lighting bills, lowering energy consumption and eliminating maintenance costs. By using ROBUS Lighting, Grant Thornton was able to avail of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) grant aid, known as Accelerated Capital Allowance (ACA). This is a tax incentive for companies paying corporation tax, and aims to encourage investment in energy-efficient equipment such as Triple E-rated lighting, as offered by ROBUS. A total of 110 SPACE LED panels were installed, replacing two 55W PLs and two 26W PLs. Lisa Ward, Director of Facilities for Grant Thornton, said, “We are absolutely delighted with the new ROBUS LED SPACE panels, which have provided very impressive cost savings to Grant Thornton. The panels generate a wonderful daylight effect in our offices, unlike the older versions which were so yellow in comparison. Since they don’t need any dusting or cleaning, we look forward to many years of maintenance-free, natural-effect LED lighting!” Utilising the latest SMD LED technology, ROBUS SPACE panels are the latest generation of edge-lit LED panels, providing solutions for applications in installations where non-dimming, daylight dimming or functional dimming are required. They replace the standard T8 and T5 lay-in modulars to provide energy-efficient and low-maintenance solutions where constant replacement of fluorescent tubes and cleaning of the fitting can be avoided. LIGHTING CASE STUDY

BESPOKE LIGHTING SOLUTION LIGHTS UP NEW EXHIBITS DURING THE £3.5MILLION REFURBISHMENT OF ENNISKILLEN CASTLE…

Hilclare’s bespoke LED track spotlight at the refurbished Enniskillen Castle.

Hilclare is the King of the Castle

H

ilclare has been lighting up County Fermanagh after recently completing two projects for Fermanagh and Omagh District Council that once again showcase the company’s ability to deliver a tailored solution. A bespoke range of LED track spotlights were manufactured for the refurbishment of Enniskillen Castle, while the company also used its lighting design expertise at the Lakeland Forum in Enniskillen as part of an upgrade package. The £3.5million refurbishment at Enniskillen Castle has created new galleries and exhibition spaces that tell the story of Fermanagh’s history and heritage, and this is where Hilclare’s expertise made a real difference. The new artefacts on display include some of the earliest archaeological finds in Fermanagh as well as more recent discoveries during the excavation of the Drumclay Crannog, with some of the exhibits on display in public for the first time. With all this in mind, ensuring effective lighting was essential. “We were appointed just three weeks before Enniskillen Castle was set to reopen, so time was really against us,” explained Steven McMurray, Hilclare Lighting’s Project Engineer for Northern Ireland. “Then we had the challenge of providing dimming control within the system that was already installed. To meet this requirement we custom built each fitting to incorporate a dimmer module, giving the client individual control over each light. “Having that level of independent control was vital for the client, and it also gives them

the flexibility to change the lighting layout in future.” While not as challenging, Hilclare’s involvement at the Lakeland Forum also highlights how the company assesses each individual project. “The client got in touch to source 200W LED high bays but I thought this was far exceeding their requirements,” Steven explained. “As we have carried out work for them before, they allowed me to provide them with a full lighting design and calculations, and that trust paid off. “As we use the best Tridonic cobs we are able to offer far greater lumen per watt efficiencies, meaning they could opt for 150W high bays. However, the lighting now also complies with international sporting standards which is over and above their

initial requirements without the additional expense.” Steven believes that the Hilclare approach ensures the company continues to be challenged by customers in both Northern Ireland and the Repulic of Ireland. “As a manufacturer we are able to offer a lot more than a one-size-fits-all solution and we pride ourselves on providing bespoke solutions for every project,” he said. “That might be in the form of a bespoke product or a lighting design that takes all the client’s requirements into consideration. “These two projects for Omagh and Fermanagh District Council are a continuation of a strong partnership we have built up over the years and we are again delighted to be able to repay their trust in us.”

flexibility that makes them suitable for most installation requirements. With a pivoting connector and a product depth of just 25mm, they can be easily installed in shallow ceiling voids and they will fit through a 65mm diameter cut-out with an 80mm void. Secured arms prevent any strain from being put on the cable. WS MERCER BELFAST JOINS WITH LEDVANCE/OSRAM TO ADD EXTRA CUSTOMER CHOICE IN LAMPS AND LIGHTING CONTROL GEAR…

Perfect partnership

W

S Mercer has launched an exciting new partnership with LEDVANCE/Osram to supply the majority of the company’s lamps and lighting control gear. “We believe that Osram can provide the right product with the right quality and service at the right price – the ‘trinity’ of lighting supply,” said WS Mercer’s Manager, John Auld. Added to its 110-year history, LEDVANCE/Osram has just expanded the company’s LED Retrofit lamp range to offer the widest portfolio of products it has ever covered. The company can now supply most lamps in an LED equivalent, from the ubiquitous LED GU10 lamp

right through to LED Capsule lamp replacements, and everything else in between. Along with its widely traditional range of lamps etc, Osram has just launched its new collection for the upcoming lighting season. This includes a redesigned allglass-bodied LED GU10, with options up to 575 lumens, with the widest dimming compatibility ever. Non-dim options are also available. Also released is the new and updated range of LED Tubes or ‘Substitube’ as the brand refers to them. Reduced wattages, better lumen performance and improved pricing are all part of the improved product offering not only in this product,

but throughout the range. Greg Logan, Regional Sales Manager for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, said, “We are really excited to be able to bring to the market the widest, most comprehensive range of LED Retrofit lamps that we have ever had available, covering lamp types, lumens output and colours. We have also just begun to market our new LED Luminaire range – aimed initially as an over-the-counter product, including LED panels, floodlights, non-corrosive fittings and many more. However, it will soon be expanded to cover an even wider range to include products suitable for the specification market – watch this space!”

COMPANY NEWS

A gap in the market was identified and, in partnership with a world-leading manufacturer, we are now filling it.

Committed to providing the best service

Both companies have recently been recruiting new staff to help grow their businesses. WS Mercer is currently seeking new internal and external sales people, while LEDVANCE has recently brought Greg Logan onto its team. Having been in the electrical trade for over 20 years, Greg has worked for most of his career as an electrical wholesaler in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Both Greg and WS Mercer’s Manager, John Auld, agree that they are excited about the new partnership and the future within the trade, seeing sales opportunities opening up for those who are prepared to invest in both people and product.

When it comes to providing high standards of service, competitive pricing, extensive product knowledge and solid support within the electrical trade, WS Mercer Belfast is right at the top of the list. A long established company, it enjoys a well-deserved reputation for all of the above qualities, serving contractors, FM clients, specialist manufacturing, hospitality and industrial clients throughout the UK. “We are wholly committed to providing the best service available in the trade throughout the province and further afield,” said Manager, John Auld. “I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to manage what must be the most experienced and knowledgeable team within the industry. Combined, we have extensive years of experience working in the electrical industry. “It is with this experience that I felt the

time was right to expand our customer offering. Given the wealth of knowledge that exists within the branch, the decision was made to look initially at our lamp and control gear range. We have always kept a good selection of both lamps and lighting control gear in stock but, occasionally, we found that we did not have a broad enough range to cover all the orders that our customers brought to us. A gap in the market was identified and, in partnership with a world-leading manufacturer, we are now filling it.” LEDVANCE is a world leader in innovative lighting products as well as intelligent and connected lighting solutions (Smart Home). The company is an offspring of Osram, combining traditional general illumination with modern, groundbreaking lighting technologies.

WORKPAL STREAMLINES THE WORKFLOW PROCESS, RESULTING IN A USER-FRIENDLY, END-TO-END JOB MANAGEMENT SYSTEM…

WorkPal launches new website and iOS app

T

he workflow management software developed by Barclay Communications counts some of the largest electrical contractors in the UK and Ireland as its clients. The WorkPal software is an end-to-end job management system that enables better workflow management to field and office workers with job reports, tracking and invoicing all included. WorkPal quickly sends job details to an engineer’s mobile app, which they can then use on-site to complete documentation, job tasks, take pictures and capture client signatures. Once the job is complete, all the information is then automatically synced back to the office. Invoices can then be generated and sent to the client days or even weeks ahead of schedule. Service histories can also be created and recurring maintenance is automatically scheduled. The latest WorkPal software development means that WorkPal is now available for companies that use both Android and iOS/ Apple phones and tablets out in the field or in the office. “The addition of the WorkPal software for iOS means we can now offer

Install speakers from award-winning Q Acoustics

A

vailable from Armour Home Electronics, Q Install is a new and exciting range of installation loudspeakers under the Q Acoustics brand. Featuring the very latest styling and technology, they have been designed to meet the most demanding requirements of custom installers and their clients. All the in-ceiling models boast a 6.5” (165mm) polypropylene cone. In the superior Performance variants, this is an injection-moulded, mass-damped, nano particle-based driver cone, for lower distortion and colouration. Q Install has used cutting-edge industrial and acoustic engineering to create a striking bezel and grille design that clips magnetically into place. Circular and square grille options are available to ensure the perfect match for each customer’s décor, and with a shallow depth requirement, all models are less than 84 mm deep. Q Install speakers also utilise UL94 flame-retardant materials. An adjustable high-frequency output level is a feature in the Performance and Weatherproof models, while swivel tweeters allow fine-tuning of the installation acoustics. Tweeters are fully open on most models, avoiding the use of protective bridges through the integration of Automatic Tweeter dome Recovery technology (ATR) that restores the dome after accidental deformation.

SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE Performance models feature a larger magnet assembly, giving a 30% increase in programme power-handling capability. In addition, precision components are utilised in the crossover filters, together with goldplated connectors. Grille geometry has been carefully optimised to ensure the perfect balance between sound and discreet appearance, and square and circular magnetic grilles are fully interchangeable without any need to change or remove the loudspeaker. All models are moisture-proof, with the

Weatherproof models being suitable for more extreme use. Stainless steel fixings and corrosionresistant aluminium grilles are utilised together with fully sealed drive units to ensure no water ingress. AWARD WINNING The design brief for Q Acoustics products was very straightforward - to design and produce the very best affordable loudspeakers in the world. Not the world’s best speakers at any price, but certainly the world’s best speakers ‘for the money’. The results speak for themselves. Q Acoustics speakers have received prestigious awards and universal acclaim from consumers and expert reviewers alike, all in agreement that Q Acoustics’ products deliver a sonic performance unequalled at their price. MARCO’S SALES MANAGER, JEFF KERRIDGE, TAKES US INSIDE THE MARCO BUSINESS, EXPLAINING WHY ITS ‘PEOPLE FIRST’ APPROACH IS THE RIGHT FIT…

Our strongest asset

M

arco’s continued growth has been supported by a strategy of product innovation, exceptional customer service and an investment in its people. These three key factors underpin the Marco business, shaping the firm’s vision and continued development. People undoubtedly are at the heart of the Marco business and we are recognised nationally for our customer service and the personal relationships that we have built with all of our clients, from small independent outfits to large international contractors. We pride ourselves on our high staff retention rates and believe that this is largely due to creating the right environment to work in, whilst giving staff opportunities to develop and grow with us.

PROGRESSION Progression within the business spans all areas of the operation. Members of the manufacturing team have the scope to grow, from machine operative through to foreman and beyond, up to management level. The majority of our supervisors have joined the company as operatives and have risen through the ranks. By recruiting this way, new starters are able to recognise opportunities ahead, whilst senior staff can empathise and support their junior colleagues. It is a pattern that has proved to be incredibly effective, cultivating a strong team ethos.

“People undoubtedly are at the heart of the Marco business and we are recognised nationally for our customer service and the personal relationships that we have built with all of our clients.” In the office, we have given internal sales staff the opportunity to take on external sales roles. Intensive training is important to make this switch, however. If a member of the team has demonstrated the skills and confidence internally, we believe that these skills are transferable. An existing understanding of the business and belief in the Marco way is already there – it’s simply about applying a new way of working, including face-to-face interaction, to make an external role a success. Since its inception, Marco has been involved with graduate recruitment programmes. Working largely with the nearby Bangor University, graduates have joined Marco from sales, marketing and product development positions. Jac Parry joined the team some two years ago under a graduate recruitment programme and during this time has grown

to become an incredibly important part of our small product development team. Jac has been involved in the development of several of our quick-fit products which have ultimately changed the way contractors install in a modern site environment.

NEW PRODUCTS This year, Jac and Grahame Austin (who leads the product development team) have launched three new products including the Cavity-Floor Box, which has been designed as a power and data outlet for raised floor applications; the Quik-Clik, an evolution of the popular fast fix range comprising a length of tray with the new MCFJC accessory pre-attached as standard; and the G-shape wire tray, ideal for under-desk cable management and above suspended ceilings for service containments in small voids. Having a dedicated resource in-house has been a huge asset for Marco and enables us to be both proactive and reactive in our approach to product development. We undoubtedly stay ahead of our competitors through a commitment to innovate and ensure we understand the market-place, introducing new accessories to support existing products whilst also launching stand-alone products. SPARKSAFE TENDER READY

CHARLOTTE BAMBER, SYSTEMS & COMPLIANCE DIRECTOR AT SPARKSAFE LTP, DISCUSSES THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL ELECTRICAL WORKERS TO BE LICENCED TO PRACTICE…

Is your business tender ready?

T

he requirement for all electrical workers to be Licenced to Practice is becoming firmly embedded into the requirements of the Northern Ireland Public Procurement scene. This requirement is linked to contract and ITT opportunities for estate maintenance and capital build projects emanating from CPD and NI CoPE organisations. Since formal adoption of the system on February 3, 2016, an introductory and sympathetic approach has been adopted by both CPD and CoPE organisations towards compliance obligations. However, as the LtP system and its requirements have become better understood, the issue of compliance or noncompliance is set to be reflected in contract performance evaluations. Most electrical contractors servicing public sector contracts will wish to ensure that they are prepared and well placed to demonstrate that they can meet the requirements of Procurement Guidance Note (PGN) 01/16 Licence to Practice Initiative for Electrical Workers.

OBJECTIVES OF LTP PGN 01/16 requires that only licensed electricians and workers are employed to undertake electrical installation work on behalf of Government clients. This is achieved by requiring that electrical workers employed on Government construction contracts register online with the Licence to Practise system. The online application requires disclosure of the individual’s electrical qualifications, skills and experience.

COMPLIANCE WITH PGN 01/16 Procurement Guidance Notes are the means by which Government Departments are advised of procurement policy and best

practice developments. PGN 01/16 states that if awarded the contract, the main contractor will be required to: UÊ ,i} ÃÌiÀÊÜ Ì Ê> Ê Ì*ÊÃÞÃÌi ° UÊ ÃÕÀiÊÌ >ÌÊ> ÞÊÃÕL V ÌÀ>VÌ ÀÃ®ÊÊ Ê undertaking electrical work is/are registered with the same LtP system. UÊ ÃÕÀiÊÌ i ÞÊV iVÌ ÃÊ>ÀiÊ >`iÊÊÊ with electrical contractors and workers via the LtP system. UÊ ÃÕÀiÊÌ >ÌÊ> Êi iVÌÀ V> ÊÜ À iÀÃÊÊ Ê employed to undertake electrical work on the contract are Licenced to Practice.

REPORTING AND MONITORING Main contractors will also be required to monitor the LtP requirement. This includes facilitating and undertaking onsite identification checks of electrical workers and cross referencing with information

“Most electrical contractors servicing public sector contracts will wish to ensure that they are prepared.” held on the LtP database. They must also report to the CoPE Project Manager, at monthly site/project meetings, to ensure compliance with the above requirements, providing appropriate evidence as necessary. This will include reports extracted from the LtP system indicating the composition of the electrical workforce by LtP grade. The SparkSafe team are available to provide short interactive information sessions for those contractors who need to get to grips with the LtP requirements. To arrange a visit, get in touch with the team on 028 2566 6835.

SPARKSAFE TENDER READY

Low Pay - Go Away The foundations of nationally determined pay rates have been shaken in recent years. False self-employment and variant hourly pay rates starting from £8.50 have hindered the local industry. Low pay has produced short term gains for some commercial enterprises. However, it also contributes towards the trend for skilled workers to earn more elsewhere. The consequences being that there are less ‘good men’ about to meet the local demand. Restoration of national industry pay rates must surely become an objective for the local industry. Low pay for skilled workers is counter-productive. It impoverishes

both worker and employer. High quality, new entrants are put off the idea of an apprenticeship, by the prospect of unregulated pay and conditions. Hiring costs and poor staff retention rates erode profitability, impair productivity and strain management resources. Reputational damage to the sector increases, and business development opportunities become curtailed by an aging, and increasingly flighty workforce. The current national rate of pay for a fully qualified electrician starts at £13.54/hour. Perhaps it’s time to rethink and restore national hourly pay rates!

SparkSafe success The SparkSafe LtP system looks set for further expansion. Here’s a look at the latest developments U Government backs LtP - Consecutive Ministers for the Department of Finance and officials from CPD and CoPE organisations have clearly backed the industry’s LtP initiative to raise quality and improve standards. U Councils consider LtP - The new system has recently been brought to the attention of Northern Ireland’s new super councils with the aim of promoting the quality improvement and electrical safety objectives of the local industry. As public safety and value for money are high on the agenda for local councils, the development and adoption of the LtP system looks set for possible further expansion. U Insurance Brokers assess LtP - Committee members of Northern Ireland British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) have

also been provided with an opportunity to consider LtP as a possible means of determining the assessment of annual premiums. The availability of an online LtP system provides an additional clear-cut means for Brokers and Underwriters to assess the contractor’s competency and electrical safety credentials. U NIHE implement LtP - The NIHE have recently awarded six property maintenance contracts worth £600 million. Each contract includes the Electrical LtP requirement. Project Managers with responsibility for overseeing the new contracts welcomed an opportunity during the period to receive a demonstration of the online system from representative of SparkSafe. The system will be used by the NIHE to ensure that an appropriately qualified workforce is matched to the requirements of the contract from start to finish.

LtP drives CPD One of the key objectives of SpakeSafe’s Electrical Licence to Practice initiative is to raise the standards and improve the quality of the industry through accredited electrical qualifications. The idea that knowledge is power has sometimes been overlooked in the electrical contracting sector. The gas installation and maintenance industry has stepped up to the mark in terms of its approach towards continuous professional development of the workforce. Since April 2010, GasSafe requirements have obliged workers via legislation to be up to date in terms of practice and qualifications to carry out commercial contract work. It would seem that client perception and approval of the gas installation industry has eclipsed the value proposition of the electrical installation industry. Perhaps one of the main reasons for this is down to the high level of client confidence in an industry that is clearly committed to continuous professional development of its workers. On the local scene, the electrical industry is making progress in its effort to improve self- regulation and modernisation. Following the publication of the must read PGN 01/16 Licence to Practise Initiative for Electrical Workers in February 2016, electrical contractors tendering for government contracts have become increasingly tuned to the governments drive for better qualified, electrical workers. The impact of electrical Licence to Practice has spurred workers towards achievement of up to date accredited electrical qualifications. During the period, around 15% of LtP applicants progressed from a Restricted Electrical Worker licence type to a Qualified Electrician licence by successfully completing an industry approved Level 3 qualification. This must be surely viewed as one of a number of important step towards improving the performance, productivity and perception of the local electrical industry.

TRAINING WORKS

Mature candidate assessment

D

o you have or know of any underqualified, skilled electrical workers who would be eligible and motivated to become a fully qualified electrician? As the outlook for major construction activity in other parts of the UK improves, the trend for local, qualified electricians working outside the country is set to continue. A gap in apprenticeship training during the period has also reduced the traditional availability of skilled labour. Although some steps are in place to address this, ETT believes that it will be important to encourage existing, underqualified electrical workers towards full accreditation. ETT is presently offering an accredited progression route for suitable candidates. The requirements of the course are tailored towards each individual, and the assessment is based on the experience and qualifications that they have already acquired. The process commences with a free confidential telephone assessment. Applicants who wish to progress, will then be provided with a bespoke training programme. This typically involves group learning and individual workplace assessment delivered at a suitable pace. For more information, call ETT on 028 2565 0750.

Win contracts with qualifications

T

he development of comprehensive PQQ (Pre-Qualification Questionnaire) documents as a means of helping the client to sort out the field of prospective tenderers is clearly here to stay. High quality, descriptive text, matched precisely to key questions, is the essential response for those charged with portraying the company narrative to a panel of impartial readers. Get it right and you win an opportunity. Get it wrong and its back to the drawing board. Expert PQQ writers inside and outside of the company have become the norm in the modern industry. The process obliges

writers to point out the unique selling points and describe those outstanding features and benefits that catch the eye and mind of the client’s chosen panel. But, when it comes to the big decision, objective facts speak loudest. One of the most powerful facts that speaks clearly is that of worker qualifications. How many tendering opportunities has your business lost out on because your competitors were ahead of the qualification curve? Those in the know are wise enough to make a tactical PQQ boast in tabular form, about the quality and standard of their workers and the allimportant qualifications that they possess.

The company offers high quality products with consistent colour and short lead times, because it knows that reliability is everything when sourcing cable. In recent years, Clynder has broadened its product range through the Superflex range of highly flexible tri-rated panel wiring, cables with remarkable properties of flexibility and bending radius. Other products include 2491X and 2491B equipment wires, solar cable and Def. Stan equipment wires and multicores. The Superflex series comes in sizes from 10mm² up to 240mm², cables, which are so flexible that it is possible to tie a knot in the 240mm², one of the largest sizes. These

SMART HOMES

RICHARD HAYWARD, FROM LEGRAND, EXPLAINS WHAT ‘SMART’ MEANS AND THE ROLE TECHNOLOGY CAN PLAY IN OUR FUTURE HOMES…

The connected home - defining the blueprint

W

hile much of the discussion around smart home automation is focused on the interface and the technology, it can be all too easy to lose touch with the wider agenda and the opportunities that arise from developments around a smart grid. The goal of smart grids, smart meters and the wider connected home is to empower consumers to take control of their energy consumption, while also making it more fun and more engaging. Radical investment is being made in the grid’s distribution and communication infrastructure, in order to cater for the changes in the electric generation patterns and the inflow of generation for localised sources. For the future, balancing demand for energy with the available resources becomes a major undertaking for the energy suppliers who will rely on the updated smart grid to make it happen. ‘Demand-side response’ will be a phrase increasingly talked about in coming years. This isn’t a new phenomenon - major industrial users have been involved in this for many years. It essentially means that during peak load times, certain companies can be called upon to either reduce or turnoff operations and, therefore, reduce their energy consumption.

SMART METERS The roll-out of smart meters will provide another opportunity to offer varying tariffs, so that when it is particularly windy or sunny and renewable technologies are at their best, availability of electricity will be much higher and, therefore, potentially cheaper. The smart meter will also mean that consumers will have greater access to their energy consumption patterns and data, as well as pricing information, so that they are much better placed to make informed decisions about providers and efficiency. A smart meter can also help to determine, through automation of the home, when it’s the cheapest and most efficient time to run the washing machine or charge an electric vehicle. As part of the Government roll-out, all homes will have a smart meter within the next five years, enabling communication

Smart technology is no longer a solution for the select few, it is accessible to all. between consumers and energy suppliers. Through a deeper understanding of energy consumption patterns and triggers to usage, energy companies can better plan for spikes and also help to reduce energy production, when there are high levels of renewable and consumer generated energy in the system.

OPPORTUNITIES Where things get really interesting for the consumer is the development of smarter controls and technologies which will help to reduce consumption further and can enable greater interaction with the smart home. We have already seen the arrival of technologies such as Hive and Nest heating technologies, and the smart-connected home opens up even greater opportunities in the form of lighting, audio and visual solutions. What is really important to communicate is the broad range of solutions available in the market, to meet customer need. A recent project in the prestigious One Tower Bridge development in London saw the installation

of a Legrand Vantage home automation system featuring temperature, lighting and entertainment functions. On the opposite end of the scale, a Legrand Arteor system, featuring smart lighting and entertainment, has been installed at Cambridge Riverside - the point being, that smart technology is no longer a solution for the select few, it is accessible to all. Everyday life will be enhanced by technology. It will continue to learn and to shape its actions based on experience. It will help to make the best use of our energy while striving for greater comfort levels and enhanced entertainment experiences too. The connected home and wider world isn’t something to fear, it opens up a whole new realm of opportunity and interaction, and the exciting part is - it’s here and it’s available today.

SMART CITIES

NEW RESEARCH INTO LOCAL GOVERNMENT ATTITUDES TOWARDS SMART CITIES SHOWS THAT THE MAJORITY OF COUNCILS FACE MAJOR BARRIERS TO IMPLEMENTING SMART TECHNOLOGY…

Councils not on track for smart city delivery

N

ew research has highlighted the risk that many councils in Northern Ireland are among those lacking the budget, leadership and capability to progress smart initiatives and connected technology in cities across the UK. The research reveals that smart cities are not deemed a strategic priority for the majority of councils in the UK, and identifies barriers to delivery that are stifling progress in many local authorities. Without a clear roadmap to delivery from Government and a coherent, cost-effective approach, the UK risks lagging behind other countries with its inconsistent and delayed rollout of smart cities. Councils from Northern Ireland were among 187 councils from across the UK who were contacted as part of the research, commissioned by street lighting expert, Lucy Zodion and conducted by independent research agency DJS Research.

IMPLEMENTATION A significant gap was identified between those councils leading the way on smart cities and those not yet engaged - over 80% had little to no involvement with smart cities, and few had named smart city leads or teams managing smart implementation. The findings indicate that the UK risks a three-tiered approach to smart cities delivery, with those earlyadopters who have secured funding striding ahead, leaving those without resources unable to make progress, and many more still struggling to grasp the potential benefits available. Five major barriers to delivery were highlighted during the

www.elecmagazine.com

research: a lack of funding, a lack of internal prioritisation, a lack of evidence, insufficient collaboration, and a general lack of confidence amongst council leaders. A model of momentum, identifying six key stages on a council’s road to smart cities, also maps out the lag between those leading in smart cities and those yet to engage. John Fox, Managing Director of Lucy Zodion, said, “Local authorities hold the key to unlocking the benefits of smart connected cities, yet this research has identified fundamental barriers to a consistent and cost-effective rollout and significant differences to the approach to smart cities across the country. “It is evident that we need leadership to make smart cities work - leadership from Government to provide a clearer path to delivery, and leadership from local authorities to create an over-arching strategy to suit individual cities. It is only when councils are able to make smart cities a strategic priority and work together to implement them efficiently, putting the citizen at the centre of their plans, that we will be able to realise the potential of our future cities.” The report identifies recommendations to optimise a smart city transition, from the creation of an over-arching strategy to establish leadership and objectives to engaging citizens to ensure that services developed meet the needs of those living and working in the city. The full report is available on Lucy Zodion’s smart cities online hub, along with smart city news and resources. Visit www.citihorizons.com for more information.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

BARRY HURST, DIRECTOR, SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC, PROVIDES INSIGHTFUL ADVICE FOR COMPANIES TO CONSIDER WHEN FOCUSING ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY…

Five steps to energy efficiency success

T

oday’s business owners are under pressure to make their facilities operate more efficiently amid falling generating capacity, rising energy demand and cost. Operating costs remain high in many regions and energy is a primary driver for businesses seeking to lower OpEx. Energy efficiency regulations have also pushed owners into understanding and reducing workplace energy use.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY DIRECTIVE IN THE EU In the years leading up to the 2015 United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Paris, participating nations became increasingly focused on reducing fossilfuel-based emissions. Improving the energy efficiency of businesses became a critical component of these plans. To this end, the member states of the European Union (EU) passed an important regulation, the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED). As a quick refresh, the EED is follow-up legislation to the EU’s climate and energy package (EEP). It is designed to drive measurable change across the energy spectrum – from production to consumption to tracking and analysis. If successful, the EED will bridge the gap between existing framework directives and national energy efficiency measures to help the EU achieve its 20% by 2020 reduction target.

WORKING WITH SUPPLIERS Energy audits are mandatory first steps to compliance under these directives, and must be repeated at least every four years to maintain compliance. Many companies, large and small, are finding difficulties allocating internal resources for audits, not to mention needing the qualifications required for carrying out investigations thoroughly. In a recent poll, Schneider Electric revealed that over 40 per cent of respondents find understanding obligations the greatest challenge. German manufacturing giant, Alfred Kärcher was looking to ensure sustainable energy conservation and legal compliance by undertaking energy audits in line with the EED. Schneider Electric conducted a survey of the company’s energy usage data and created a roadmap for achieving its goals. By turning to a partner, Kärcher could rely on

the process being managed centrally and for any technical requirements to be delivered holistically. By working with a reputable, qualified partner, businesses stand to benefit significantly from energy audits. By implementing the changes identified, businesses can help their bottom line with regard to reducing energy bills, as well as improve performance in other energy efficiency schemes such as the Climate Change Agreement (CCA) and the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC). Once an audit has been carried out, it’s important to leverage the benefits. Here are five actions that companies should take after audit to ensure energy efficiency success and ongoing compliance: £Ê iÊ«Ài«>Ài`Êv ÀÊ>ÊV « > ViÊV iV °Ê Once your notice of compliance has been submitted, you may be required to provide evidence of how you have complied with the scheme. You will need to keep an evidence pack which contains all aspects of your audits – this needs to be available for the compliance period to which it relates and two subsequent periods. ÓÊ1ÃiÊÌ iÊ`>Ì>ÊÞ ÕÊv Õ `°ÊCollecting the full scope of energy use was often the most challenging task for businesses in addressing their obligations. Using the data found and continuing to collect the data from the defined sources will greatly improve visibility

of your energy performance as well as facilitate the next round of obligations 3 Use the ECMs savings towards an Energy Management System. The first steps to implementing an EMS, such as ISO 50001, are to analyse your energy data, to identify ECMs, and to track the progress. With little investment, you could introduce an EMS by 2018, providing exemption from your next phase of obligations. 4 Keep tracking your legislative obligations. Take care of interim requirements such as annual qualification assessments (changing from SME to nonSME) or the requirements to submit annual results from ECMs. Accurately tracking and forecasting legislative requirements will ensure strategic decisions can be made well in advance, allowing time to budget and plan accordingly. 5 Find a trusted partner to support continuing the drive for energy efficiency throughout your business. Truly being energy efficient requires going beyond energy audits. It entails addressing procurement strategies, sourcing of efficient equipment, and raising energy management best practice and awareness. Heating Marshalling Box KHMB4W The KHMB4W Heating Marshalling Box removes the need for the complicated wiring of heating controls and confusing wiring centre connections. This means the installer does not need to create multiple wiring steps for motorised valves and other controls that are necessary to achieve boiler and heating controls interlocking. Electrical Standards Compliance This system greatly facilitates mandatory loop impedance and RCD testing. Also provides actuator isolation. Designed with ease of installation and safety in mind.

TRADE EVENT DUBLIN 2016

Stand 7 CHRONOTHERM CONTROLS LTD STAND CONTACT: TOM NOONE

Visit the Chronotherm Controls Ltd stand and find out more about Klik, a secure heating controls connection system. Co-designed by Hager, Chronotherm and Vintero, Klik provides mechanical and electrical connection in one plug-in action. The advantages to using the Heating Klik system are significant, explained Tom Noone, Managing Director at the company. “Using the considerable electrical knowledge of Terry Kelly of Vintero, who has over 30 years’ experience in electrical heating controls installation, and, working closely with Hager and Chronotherm, Heating Klik was designed to cut out a certain amount of wiring that an electrician or plumber has to do when installing a home-heating system. Up until recently, the norm was to use a multiblock connector wiring centre, which can be quite a messy job. This process is eliminated by Klik, a semi pre-plug system that fits onto a connector box. An additional and significant advantage of the new Klik system is the ability to perform mandatory test requirements, such as loop impedance and RCD testing. Klik also provides motorised valve actuator isolation, which may become a mandatory requirement in the near future. With the new product, motorised valves actuators can be pluggedin in seconds, without circuit isolation, and provide full interlock, as required under Part L of the UK and Irish building regulations. The non-wander design also prevents disconnection of the plug from its socket by vibration or snatch withdrawals. The Klik product exceeds relevant standard requirements and also allows for compliance with IEE wiring regulations and safety regulations. Safety is a major factor with Heating Klik. Mechanical and electrical connections made in one ‘click-in’ action save time and allow for safe installation.

Before…Typical 3 zone wiring connection

FOLLOW US ON:

Designed for on-load isolation, Klik allows individual motorised valves to be removed for maintenance, without affecting other heating controls on the circuit. Maintenance testing and installation tasks can be carried out speedily and safely. All plug-in connectors are factory pre-wired and sealed. In addition, each plug-in connector is colour coded so as to indicate which heating or hot water zone it relates to. Programmer and thermostats are wired into a Klik marshalling box which can cater for up to three zones. The marshalling box has seven copper bus bars, each dedicated to specific tasks: • Room stat 1 • Room stat 2 • Cylinder stat • Permanent live • Neutral • Earth • Switched live out The plug-in connectors are designed similar to a key, and only Zone 1, for example, will activate when the relevant Klik connector is attached to the marshalling box (hence the importance of the connector colour coding). Another advantage of the key type plug-in connector is that it is impossible to misconnect the various zones at the marshalling box. Each marshalling box has a fourth connection point. This is where the blank connector is fitted, and is done for safety reasons. However, the great advantage of the fourth connection point is that this is where loop impedance and RCD testing can be performed, using appropriate testing equipment (nearly all makes of test meters are suitable for use). All plugs are factory pre-wired using the CTC motorised valve actuator plug-in cable, in Hager’s UK manufacturing facility. This plug-in cable is designed for use with

Chronotherm’s CTC brand of motorised valves. The range consists of a quick release actuator and valves suitable for either imperial or metric sized copper pipe. The actuator is also equipped with a Power On LED and comes with a white cover. Heating Klik was launched onto the Irish market early last year and has been demonstrated at trade shows during 2015. Klik is currently being used on sites in Dublin with great success. T: 01 410 5756 W: www.chronotherm.ie

“The Klik product exceeds relevant standard requirements and also allows for compliance with IEE wiring regulations and safety regulations.”

Building designers require systems and processes that are not only easy to use once implemented, but easily designed, easily installed and easily commissioned, as more time on site means escalated costs. The future of building design is currently impacted by both urbanisation and technological change. People need to reconsider their use of resources at both an individual and societal level. In addition to thinking about material choices and energy ratings, building designers and specifiers need to think about creating spaces that are more efficient, ambient and harmonised. Lighting controls, for example, are used in lighting design projects to achieve a high-quality energyefficient lighting system. Specifying a layered, daylightintegrated lighting and control system gives the occupants full management of the lighting while providing appropriate lighting levels, minimising glare, balancing surface brightness, and enhancing the surrounding architecture. Ultimately, it is in the best interest of specifiers and building designers to select products that will make the lives of installers and end-users easier.

APP-BASED TECHNOLOGY It cannot be understated how important commissioning is to the ultimate success of a lighting control system. If a lighting control system is not commissioned, it may result in greater energy consumption than a building without any controls at all. Commissioning is defined as the final adjustment, calibration, and tuning of the various components after they have been installed and the space is occupied. This process requires the participation of the building owner, a commissioning agent, the lighting designer, the electrical engineer, a manufacturer’s representative and building maintenance personnel. Klik LCM is programmed via the KlikLink app, offering unrivalled potential for tailored lighting requirements. Stand 36 MEGGER STAND CONTACT: MARK JOHNSON

At this year’s Electrical Trade Show in Dublin, Megger is exhibiting a wide range of innovative test equipment, all of which has been specifically designed to make life easier, safer and more profitable for electrical contractors. Highlights include the new MFT1701 range of multifunction installation testers, which incorporate valuable extra functions, and also the PAT100 range of portable appliance testers that are ideal for carrying out low to medium volume testing in offices, shops, business units and similar environments. To meet the requirements and budget of every electrical contractor, Megger’s new multifunction testers are available in three versions. The MFT1711 is a cost-effective choice for routine installation testing and includes advanced features like automatic RCD testing and true RMS voltage measurement that were previously only available on more costly instruments. The MFT1721 is an excellent option for contractors whose work includes three-phase systems and solar power installations, while maximum versatility and convenience is provided by the top-of-the-range MFT1731. This tester not only has advanced facilities for measuring earth resistance but also internal memory for storing test results and support for convenient Bluetooth downloading. Reliable, robust and compact, the PAT100s feature a tough construction. They have been designed with hardened, scratchproof glass to protect the display, and have also been equipped with rubber armouring for the cases, making them safe to use for both experienced users and those in training. Visitors to the show will be able to see the entire range of testers – which are currently available in three models – PAT120, PAT150

and PAT150R. All are complemented by a new smartphone/tablet app, which is available for Apple and Android devices. The app provides a concise guide to PAT testing, including risk assessment, determining retest frequency, and cable calculations for extension leads.

COST EFFECTIVE PAT120 is a cost-effective option that provides all of the functions needed to carry out tests on the vast majority of commonly encountered portable appliances. It features pre-programmed test groups with fixed pass/fail limits for testing Class I and Class II appliances, as well as extension and power leads. The use of test groups means that the instruments carry out the correct sequence of tests automatically, with a minimum of

operator intervention. Not only does this simplify testing, but it also reduces testing time and guards against errors. For users who need to test an even wider range of portable and fixed equipment, the PAT150 offers all of the functions of the PAT120, plus many others. The additional functions include tests for 10 mA and 30 mA portable RCDs, and separate tests for continuity, insulation, leakage and SELV equipment, all of which can be accessed rapidly via the quick-test button. With the PAT150, mains-powered leakage testing is also supported, and live-circuit measurement is available for testing the mains supply and socket polarity as well as for measuring voltages up to 300 V ac. Experienced users can quickly and easily adjust test group pass limits and test durations to suit special requirements, and the resistance of the bonding leads can be nulled to minimise measurement errors. Also on show is Megger’s latest range of invaluable accessory products, like MPU690 proving units for use with two-pole voltage testers, PSI410 phase sequence indicators, and MST210 socket testers. Throughout the exhibition, experts from Megger will be on hand to provide advice on the selection and use of portable test equipment, and to answer questions relating to visitors’ own test and measurement applications. Stand 5 BROTHER STAND CONTACT: gerry quigley Independent research conducted on behalf of print and technology specialist, Brother reveals that many electricians and contractors have come unstuck due to issues with labelling. The study, conducted by market research specialist, Rainmakers CSI, revealed the top six problems with unsatisfactory labelling for organisations as: 1 Errors in the use of equipment on site. 2 Breach of internal company policies. 3 Breach of health and safety standards. 4 Errors in testing, accreditation or documentation of equipment. 5 Non-compliance with requirements of their insurers resulting in invalid insurance cover. 6 Confusion during evacuation drills or emergencies. The research found that 78% of electricians affix labels at work but, despite suitable technology being available, 45% still handwrite them. Use of labels has significantly increased over the past three years, with nearly 50% of electricians and contractors expecting to do more labelling in the next three years than they do at present. In addition, technology was found to be important for electricians as 93% use a smartphone at work, with 62% using work-related apps, and 28% relying on new technology to help meet latest industry regulations. Self-printed labels offer a more professional finish, better quality and more durability, as well as the opportunity to personalise with their company logo, name or contact information, which 30% of contractors said they use all of the time. Gerry Quigley, Brother Ireland said, “Signage and labelling is crucial to the smooth running of a business and helps organisations with health and safety by avoiding breaches, errors and non-compliant pitfalls. The results have found that technology is essential for the majority of electricians who can benefit from Brother’s free Cable Label Tool app, which enables electricians to print directly from their smartphone and tablet - perfect for working on site. Due to the increase of labelling expected and the fact that over two fifths of labels are still handwritten, our technology is designed to streamline the labelling process for electricians and contractors to make it quicker and easier, hassle-free, clear and concise.” Brother’s PT-E550WSP device produces compliant labels for electricians and contractors in line with wiring regulations. Each label has a clear identification to help with electrical installation and maintenance. The device links to Brother’s free Mobile Cable Label Tool app which creates robust labels for telecom, data and electrical installations. The cloud-based hub provides up-to-date design templates and electrical symbols, making it easy for the user to produce compliant labels. The PT-E550WSP is currently on special offer, including four tapes, and is available from electrical wholesalers nationwide. T: 01 2411900 E: sales@brother.ie W: www.brother.ie *The Rainmakers CSI research was conducted between August 2015 and March 2016 in the UK, France, Germany and Italy with market opinion leaders and experienced users. In total, 1,024 professionals were interviewed about their business, their printers and labelling, their thoughts on propositions and brands, and their purchasing behaviours.
