SKILLS’ SHORTAGES HIGHLIGHTED IN DKM REPORT Commissioned by the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) and carried out by DKM consultants and SOLAS, a recent report has stated that construction activity could potentially generate a requirement for 112,000 jobs up to 2020. The report also states that construction could become a €20billion industry by 2020, ensuring plenty of new opportunities for the electrical industry. According to CIF Director General, Tom Parlon, the report sets out the required number of employees and apprentices to sustain desired activity levels as set down by Government policy. “We will continue to work with the Government and its agencies, such as SOLAS and the Education and Training Boards, to deliver skilled employees and apprentices

through innovative initiatives,” he said. “It is critically important to get the message to young people, and those who have emigrated, that there is a significant number of quality careers across all the trades and functions in construction companies.” The recession saw numbers working in construction decline by almost 180,000 by Q1 2013 to just 35% of the numbers employed at the peak (2007), explained DKM Director Annette Hughes. “The industry is concerned that, as activity ramps up quickly, there will be a lag in the necessary skilled workers in the labour market and amongst those coming out of fulltime education and training to meet the demand over the medium-term,” she added. CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY CAN ADD 75,000 JOBS BY 2020

Cera Slevin, Manager of Solar and Storage for ESB Generation and Wholesale markets, with Terra Solar co-founder, André Ferno.

ESB INVESTMENT TO DEVELOP IRELAND’S SOLAR CAPACITY ESB has invested €2.5million in Irish solar company, Terra Solar, to accelerate the development of solar energy generation in Ireland. Terra Solar and ESB have the potential to deliver over 260 megawatts of electricity generation capacity from solar energy, which would power over 50,000 homes every year. According to Cera Slevin, Manager

of Solar and Storage for ESB Generation and Wholesale Markets, the investment will see the future development of multiple solar PV farms within Ireland, which will result in a lower carbon footprint and contribute to increased energy production from renewable resources. W: www.esb.ie or www.terrasolar.ie

According to the CIF, the construction industry can generate 75,000 jobs, deliver infrastructure projects worth over €26billion and create 25,000 houses per annum if the right policy framework is put in place. CIF President, Michael Stone made these comments at the recent CIF annual conference where attendees also heard from expert speakers. According to Michael Stone, research undertaken by the CIF, Solas and DKM consultants indicates that the industry could create an additional 75,000 jobs by 2020 in the delivery of Government’s housing and infrastructure strategies. He added, “These jobs will be generated by the 30,000 plus enterprises in construction – 99% of which have under 10 employees, that are dispersed across nearly every community in Ireland.” The CIF President also said that the global construction market is estimated to grow to $15trillion by 2030, with the Irish industry set to capture these opportunities which will generate jobs and growth and also increasing exports significantly. WORKERS SIX TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DIE FROM SUICIDE THAN FALLS Suicide kills six times as many construction workers as falling from heights, according to mental health charity, Samaritans. The issue was raised at ‘Forgotten Issue’, a seminar organised by the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA); the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA); and the CIBSE. The three industry bodies and Samaritans agreed that the seminar should be the start of a major initiative to address mental health issues across the building engineering sector.

COVER STORY – SATURN LED

ANOTHER GAME CHANGER FROM THE LED SPECIALISTS AS THE EVOLUTION OF THE COMPANY’S PRODUCT RANGE CONTINUES…

Four-midable new catalogue from Saturn LED E volution is part of the DNA at Saturn LED and the company has again introduced another industry game changer with the launch of another new catalogue. Such is the level of new products being added to the Saturn range that Volume Four of the Intelligent Lighting catalogue arrives just a year after the launch of the last version. Incorporating a wide range of new products alongside firm favourites, Volume Four provides customers with an insight into an extensive range of lighting suitable for almost every application.

The new Saturn LED Catalogue Volume Four

This consistent evolution of the Saturn LED product range is combating the plethora of cheap, low-quality LED luminaires that have deluged the UK and Irish markets. In contrast, Saturn LED only offers quality, with all LEDs incorporating CREE, Philips or Tridonic components and superb warranties. Throughout the new catalogue, the recurring theme is quality and, given the diversity of the range, this means that this quality can be applied across various projects. Saturn LED consistently delivers quality, innovative and costcompetitive LEDs for the commercial, industrial and domestic sectors, and this extensive product range is only available through leading electrical wholesalers in the UK and Ireland.

The company also delivers on price. As one of the few independent distributors within the UK and Ireland distribution markets, Saturn’s strong procurement process, coupled with a focus on service, enables customers to benefit from highly competitive pricing across the company’s product range.

The final - yet still vitally important aspect of working with Saturn LED is the high level of service. With a dedicated Irish Distribution Centre outside Dungannon working in conjunction with Saturn LED’s distribution facilities in Chelmsford, the company has both the UK and Ireland covered. What this means is that customers can now select from a greater array of products while also enjoying a great service. With the two distribution centres now in place, all orders placed before 6pm will be delivered anywhere in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland the next day. The launch of the new catalogue marks another important step forward, as the evolution at Saturn LED continues. Already, the company is working closely with its sourcing office in Shanghai, China, to develop the latest LED solutions, and, in anticipation of this product expansion, work is now underway on Volume Five of the catalogue. PEOPLE PROFILE

A FEW WEEKS INTO HIS NEW ROLE AS AREA SALES MANAGER, PAUL MCGARRY, IS ENJOYING A HOST OF NEW CHALLENGES AT RITTAL…

Life in the fast lane P

aul McGarry has enjoyed a varied and rewarding career in the electrical industry, and that journey continues with his recent appointment to Rittal as Area Sales Manager for the Connaught, North Midlands and border counties region. Just a few weeks at the company so far, Paul’s enjoying his new role. “I’ve been out of this sector for a while, so to come back and see some of the old faces and renew old relationships has been great,” he said. Paul’s career began with him obtaining a qualification in Control Systems and Electrical Engineering from DIT Kevin St, and continued with a role in ABB Drives & Motors, which continued for six years. Prior to joining Rittal, he worked with a panel builder and within the electrical wholesale sector, after relocating back to the west of Ireland, where he completed a degree in Business Studies at IT Sligo. Daily duties at Rittal vary from account management and business development to supporting accounts in the Industrial Enclosures (IE) nclosure side of the business. “At Rittal, there are distinct business units for products in Industrial Enclosures and Systems (IE), IT Enclosures and Systems and Climate Control.,” he explained. “Determining new routes to market for each of our business units is also a large part of my new role.” A typical day involves liaising between customers and Rittal’s internal sales/support people, and interacting with the other sides of the business, whether that’s the custom manufacturing division in Germany or the EPlan Engineering design software side of the business in the UK. Exploring new business opportunities with wholesalers or panel builders is also part of Paul’s new role. In the business for 20 years, Paul has seen his fair share of changes in the sector. The most recent recession was, he says,

extremely tough. “I was made redundant during the height of it and had to reinvent myself. I worked for myself for a while, as a contract Sales Engineer/Agent for companies that I previously had dealings with. It was difficult; hats off to any man or woman who sets up their own business in this country. The support for people who make the decision to go out on their own just isn’t there. The local enterprise office will do their best for you but it’s very difficult to get established and gain traction.” Despite the upswing in the sector, Paul says investment in infrastructure would go some way to helping areas outside Dublin gain momentum. “It’s time that investment in jobs and infrastructure became less Dublin centric and the revitalisation of the rest of the country, in particular the Northwest, commenced in earnest. Investment in a motorway to Sligo, for example, would be very positive, not just for the west of Ireland but also for the rest of the country. There’s certainly a lot more positivity around the country than there was, and that’s something I’m seeing all the time. However, there is still a lag between the west and east coast which needs to be addressed by government.” Customers at Rittal include panel builders, electrical wholesalers and some larger customers in manufacturing and IT. Founded in Germany in 1961 by owner, Dr. Friedhelm Loh, who is still leading the organisation,

Paul attributes the firm’s success and longevity to its ability to innovate. “As the industry has evolved, so too has the company. Innovation in different areas like climate control has ensured we stay relevant and to the forefront of the market. Climate control products are a major part of our business now. We’ve essentially gone from a product manufacturer to a system solution provider for industrial, IT, utilities, pharma and manufacturing sectors.” Rittal is part of the Freidhelm Loh Group which employs over 10,000 people globally, has 13 manufacturing sites, 58 subsidiaries and reported a turnover of €2.2Bn in 2015 “We might be a big company, but we’ve managed to maintain a local focus. Wherever I’ve gone over the past six weeks, people have said the support they get from us is second to none. That’s something to be very proud of. We intend to maintain that local presence as the market continues to evolve and develop.” When he’s not working, Paul holds a Club Officer role in Ballina Stephenites GAA Club and is a First Aider/CFR-C with St. John Ambulance. Any time that’s left is spent running after his 21-month-old son James. “It’s certainly a busy time in Rittal for me right now and James makes sure he gets his share of attention too. He keeps me on my toes!” T: (RoI) Paul McGarry, Area Sales Manager, on 059 918 2100 or 087 633 0833 or (NI) 00353 599 182 100. W: www.rittal.com/ie-en

HMS CAROLINE - CASE STUDY

WILLIAM COATES SAILS INTO FRESH WATERS WITH UNIQUE M&E SERVICES INSTALLATION ON HMS CAROLINE…

William Coates gets on board for historic ship’s restoration

M

&E engineering services company, William Coates, has been involved in many diverse projects over its long history, but perhaps none more so than a recent contract to complete the M&E services on board the historic HMS Caroline, at Alexandra Dock, Queen’s Road, Belfast. The ship is the last remaining British WW1 light cruiser still afloat (and the sole survivor of the Battle of Jutland). The National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) and the Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment have worked as partners to restore and interpret HMS Caroline through a £11million refit to launch it for a new life as a floating museum. As a result, the public will now be able to enjoy a unique experience, visiting the restored engine rooms and crew spaces, as well as newly introduced

interactive stations, classrooms, event spaces and a café. William Coates was proud to play its part in this historic restoration and refurbishment, employed by main contractor, Blu Marine, to look after the mechanical and electrical services installation. “It was a big project to undertake,” said Gareth Holden, Electrical Project Manager at William Coates. “We hadn’t carried out this type of installation before – there aren’t many of them about. We hadn’t worked with Blu Marine before either, but they’re a very professional company and were a pleasure to work with. At William Coates, we like to continually develop our skills and add to our already extensive portfolio. Working on HMS Caroline has certainly ticked both boxes and allows us to tackle similar jobs,

HMS CAROLINE - CASE STUDY

should they ever come up in the future, with even more confidence.” William Coates completed a comprehensive M&E services installation on the iconic HMS Caroline. This included mains distribution coming from the dockside onto the ship and terminating in a new mains switchboard. General power was supplied throughout the ship - including power supply to the interactive displays - as well as general and emergency lighting. The old drill hall space was converted into what is now the main audio-visual space. “Intelligent lighting was installed there to compliment the video presentation, but also to enable the lighting to be adapted when the space is used for other types of functions,” explained Gareth. “The main engine room is also a great space with lighting and sound interaction.” M&E services were further installed for the catering facilities in the mess area - an industrial kitchen fit-out to allow outside caterers to be able to use appliances such as portable ovens.

UNIQUE CHALLENGES “It was an interesting project to work on, with some unique challenges,” continued Gareth. “First of all, the ship had be stripped right back because of all its modern add-ons over the years. We were directed not to take any paint off, as it dates back over 100 years and is of historic interest, so we had to work around that as best

we could without causing any damage.” The biggest challenge for the team from William Coates was being able to facilitate the vision of the experts from the National Museum of the Royal Navy - keeping the authenticity of the restoration while carrying out a modern services installation. “It meant that we had to hide a lot of things, such as the modern ventilation and air-conditioning pipe and duct work, which would otherwise have looked out of place in a historical context,” said Gareth. “It took a bit of trial and error, making modifications as we went along, and that meant that the job took longer than normal, which was an additional pressure as there was a tight schedule on this project – the ship had to be ready in time for the 100 years commemoration of the Battle of Jutland, in May. “We started work in November, and because of the nature of the job it was very labour intensive, so we brought in additional people to ensure that we made the deadline. It certainly wasn’t a run-of-the-mill M&E project but, overall, the job went very well indeed.” HMS Caroline has since been towed to a dry dock in the H&W Shipyard in Belfast in order to undergo hull conservation work before opening once again to the public. The public attraction has received a five-star rating from Tourism Northern Ireland and will be returned to Alexandra Dock in Belfast Harbour in February 2017.

Dedicated to high standards William Coates Ltd was formed in 1963 and has grown to become one of the leading mechanical and electrical building services and facility management contractors in the UK and Ireland. With a team of highly qualified and motivated electrical and mechanical professionals, the company is committed to understanding customers and their requirements, executing projects safely to the highest level of quality possible. Its core philosophy of quality, value, service and delivery, enables the team to focus on project completion on time, within budget and carried out to the highest possible standard. This ethos has played a major role in ensuring long-term repeat business, which has been fundamental to the company’s continued success.

More apprentices as industry recovers

ith this year’s budget focused on stimulating the construction industry and, in particular, housebuilding, recent statistics pointing to a rise in the numbers taking up apprenticeships are to be welcomed. The Louth and Meath Education Training Board (LMETB), for example, recently reported a surge in apprenticeship numbers at their Regional Skills and Training Centre in Dundalk. National reports suggest that the number of new apprentices are set to double, with the biggest surge in trades linked to construction. Electrical apprenticeships account for 30% of the new apprentices registered in 2016 in Louth and Meath, with carpentry and joinery the second most popular. Commenting on the numbers, Elma McMahon from LMETB’s Regional Skills and Training Centre, said, “The majority of apprentices

registered in Louth and Meath are employed in the traditional crafts associated with building like carpentry and electrical work. “Together with plumbing and motor mechanics they form almost 70% of the total number of apprenticeships registered with LMETB. However, non construction-based crafts are also gaining in popularity and we are seeing increases in the number of non-traditional trades like pipefitting, metal fabrication, electrical instrumentation and refrigeration.” The figures from LMETB’s database are showing a return to the apprenticeship model as an entry route to work for school-leavers. There are 191 new apprentices to date in Louth and Meath, giving a total number of 643 current apprentices registered with LMETB. The Donegal Education and Training Board (ETB) are also reporting a rise in apprenticeships. Three hundred people are undertaking apprenticeships in Donegal, a figure that’s set to increase over the next two years. In an effort to further boost apprenticeship numbers, the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) is continuing its work with many of the Education and Training Boards across the country to provide short skills courses for people on the live register with construction experience (estimated at around 60,000). The CIF has

also established a website portal – www.apprentices.ie – aimed at companies and students interested in pursuing a construction apprenticeship. A new Government plan is also aiming to increase the number of people registering for apprenticeship and training schemes. The Action Plan for Education sets out a target to create 100 new apprenticeship schemes and 50 new traineeship programmes by 2020, as well as increasing access to work experience for higher level students. The move is designed to ensure there is adequate training for job opportunities in growth areas of the economy in the years ahead, rather than the traditional reliance on apprenticeships in construction. Minister for Education Richard Bruton said the changes would see 50,000 people registering for apprenticeship or trainee schemes by 2020, as well as a 25% increase in the number of higher level students who have access to work experience. The projected number of apprenticeships at the end of this year is 11,025, with the expected number of traineeships expected to stand at 47,489. Visit the new CIF website portal at www.apprentices.ie for more information about companies and students interested in pursuing apprenticeships.

SPARKSAFE

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SELF-CERTIFICATION AND THE ELECTRICAL LICENCE TO PRACTICE SYSTEM? CHARLOTTE BAMBER, SYSTEMS & COMPLIANCE DIRECTOR AT SPARKSAFE LTP, EXPLAINS…

Self-certification and Third Party accreditation

E

lectricians are obliged to inspect, test and certify the electrical safety of wiring systems that they install, repair or alter. This process is sometimes referred to as self-certification. The obligation to carry out (initial, periodic and minor works) certification of electrical systems is based upon the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the BS7671 Wiring Requirements for Electrical Installations.

THIRD PARTY ACCREDITATION Many client organisations and individual customers strengthen this trust-based, self-certification process by specifying an independent, quality control measure. A number of approved, third party accredited scheme operators provide this service. Examples of such organisations include the NICEIC, NAPIT and ELECSA. An examination of the quality and standards around the electrical certification process is central to the objectives of most third party accreditation organisations. The focus of third party accredited scheme operators tends to be on the practices, procedures and the skilled person/s who certify electrical test data in accordance with the BS7671 Wiring Requirements. Typically, scheme operators carry out inspections aimed at assessing the renewal of the electrical contractors approved status. • SCOPE: The procedure includes, but is not limited to, the scrutiny of forms, certificates, insurance details, training records for the qualifying supervisor/s, calibration of instruments, and other desk top checks. One or more on-site visits may be included in the inspection. The (on-site) visit is usually linked to the schedule of test results belonging to current and/or past jobs.

20 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

“SparkSafe Licence to Practice system examines, verifies and assesses the competency of the electrical contractor’s complete manual workforce.” • LIMITATION: Central to third party accreditation of the self-certification process is the competency of the person (Qualifying Supervisor) who supervises the gathering and certification of the electrical inspection and testing data. The procedure does not formally assess the qualifications or competencies of the electrical contractor’s wider direct and/ or indirect manual workforce. Typically, only one or a few key workers designated as Qualifying Supervisors are subject to a suitable assessment of competency. • BENEFIT: Outside of an approved third party accredited membership scheme, electrical selfcertification is based upon a trust system. Many client organisations and individual customers insist on the added protection and quality improvement measure that is offered by the services of accredited scheme operators.

LICENCE TO PRACTICE Where third party accreditation concentrates on a few specialist workers (ie Qualifying Supervisors), the SparkSafe Licence to Practice (LtP) system examines the individual competencies of the many workers who carry out the practical installation tasks. These are the workers who install and connect the electrical containment, wiring, equipment, accessories, power and lighting systems. The electrical Licence to Practice system examines, verifies and assesses the competency of the electrical contractor’s complete manual workforce. This extends to those who are also indirectly employed by the electrical contractor. In comparison to third party accreditation, this is what SparkSafe LtP covers:

FOLLOW US ON:

www.elecmagazine.com

SPARKSAFE

• SCOPE: The SparkSafe LtP system provides online visibility of the electrical contractor’s workforce by individual licence type. This means that the qualitative weighting of the planned and actual workforce can be viewed, and subsequently monitored, in line with the programme, type and scope of individual client projects. • LIMITATION: The system does not seek or intend to duplicate or replace the existing third party accreditation provisions. • BENEFIT: Connecting competency with contracts is at the core of the SparkSafe LtP system. Better workers produce better outcomes. In the electrical industry, ignorance is not bliss. Licence to Practice empowers responsible and discerning clients with the means of raising the quality and improving the standards of electrical installation work that they have commissioned. Project managers are provided with a very useful resource that enables them to swiftly and conveniently determine the numerical and qualitative composition of the electrical contractor’s workforce by licence type.

SUMMARY Third party accreditation of the self-certification system includes an annual assessment of the few operatives who are employed to certify electrical inspection and testing outcomes on client projects. The absence of such a service would mean a dependence upon the inherent weaknesses of a trust-based system. The electrical Licence to Practice system, by contrast, addresses the competency and identity of the many workers who install, fit, connect, repair, alter and maintain the electrical requirements of the client. A top-down, bottom-up, quality improvement measure is available to those client organisations that choose to specify and apply these different but complementary systems.

JIB and SparkSafe LtP - what is the difference? JIB

SPARKSAFE LtP

The JIB proposition is based upon an established plastic card system. The card is a vehicle for carrying an operative’s identity, grade, occupation and health and safety credentials. Many new occupational JIB card types have come into existence. However, with regards to electrical installation, there are five main occupational card types - apprentice, helper, electrician, approved electrician and technician. Each card is linked to designated pay rates and corresponding levels of responsibility, as defined in the JIB Handbook. From the client’s perspective, the relevancy of the JIB card lies with the following:

In contrast, the SparkSafe Licence to Practice (LtP) system makes innovative use of online technology. Plastic cards are replaced by online profiles that provide the name and photographic identify of the worker, as well as the worker’s licence type, membership number and expiry date. In Northern Ireland, the LtP arrangements by client demand, places a firm obligation on those who apply for a QE licence to evidence the achievement of the latest of BS7 671. The strength of the online SparkSafe Licence to Practice system lies with the following:

• Demand for the card at the gate: The client may oblige the electrical contractor to produce an individual card to prove evidence of electrical competency for each worker. • The possession of the card by the person: Lost, forgotten, out-of-date and fake cards feature in the challenge of the system in the modern era. • Management of card by the main contractor: The plastic card system relies upon paper-based management and control systems. In the UK, the JIB does not require ECS cardholders to possess an accredited qualification covering the latest edition of BS7671.

• Demand for the card at the gate: An independently verified competency and photographic identity check for each worker is available 24/7 online to key stakeholders from inception to final handover. • The possession of the card by the person: Issues of fake, lost and forgotten cards are replaced by the online system. The electrical worker has a unique membership number and online licence type, matched to their identity, qualifications and experience. • Management of card by the main contractor: The online system minimises administration costs and management time associated with recording and checking the contractor’s workforce composition.

Learning more about Licence to Practice

M

ain and electrical contractors from across Northern Ireland took up the opportunity in October to learn more about the audit requirements and functionality of the new SparkSafe Licence to Practice system. The attendees received an update on the development of the system and a demonstration of how it works. Derek Thompson, Chief Executive, ETT, said, “The basis of compliance with the new system is set out by the Central Procurement Directorate in PGN 01/16. We strongly recommend that main contractors and electrical sub-contractors engaged in

Public Sector tendering, take time to read and understand these requirements.” For further information on the SparkSafe system, and to access the ‘How to Guides’, visit www.sparksafeltp.co.uk. Each guide explains the system step by step, providing tips and advice on managing projects and making connections with electrical workers.

CASE STUDY - BLACKPOOL COMMUNITY CENTRE, CORK

SOLAR PANELS AND LED LIGHTS ARE PROVIDING A COMMUNITY CENTRE IN CORK WITH SERIOUS ENERGY SAVINGS AND SETTING AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHER LOCAL GROUPS…

Setting the standard T his year, Blackpool Community Centre in Cork made the brave decision to invest in energy-efficient measures that would see the group pay off its investment in the technology within seven years. The installation of solar PV panels and the addition of LED lighting has also helped the centre play its part in tackling climate change. With the help of a Better Energy Communities (BEC) grant administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the energy-efficient measures are beginning to prove their worth, and the centre is being hailed as a model for other local groups across the country. Blackpool Community Centre plays an important role in the town offering medical services, educational classes, an over-60s club and a youth centre. Mark Cronin is the honorary secretary at the centre and one of

the initial advocates for the introduction of energy-saving measures at the facility. As a member of the Green Party, Mark is acutely aware of climate change and its effects. “The idea of reducing the centre’s energy consumption was a consideration, as was the idea of saving money through reducing our energy consumption,” he said. “Without the money-saving aspect, the idea probably wouldn’t have developed as quickly.” Mark was familiar with the BEC scheme, having used it previously for his own home. Despite this, he and the team at the community centre came up against a brick wall. “Our initial application was turned down. It was only when we came under the umbrella of NCE Insulation in Cork that we were successful. Really, it was through their hard work that we secured funding

and without them, I don’t think the project would have gone ahead,” he said.

INSTALLATION NCE Insulation is one of the biggest community-based installers of energysaving measures to households in Ireland. The company prides itself on helping home-owners to combat fuel poverty, improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs, both economically and environmentally. With NCE’s help, the community centre received a 40% grant, with the remaining 60% provided by the centre itself. “We’re hoping that once the savings kick in, the solar panels and LED lights will start to pay for themselves,” said Mark. Approximately 28 LED light fittings were installed by Daniel O’Leary last March, a local electrician from the area. Before the solar panels were installed, the centre

€25million will be made available in 2017 for more BEC scheme energy-efficiency upgrades.

saved approximately 15% on its energy bills, thanks to the new LED lighting. With the solar panels working in tandem with the LED lights, Mark is hoping for significant energy savings. “We’re hoping that the solar panels will give us 10,000kwh. We’re taking a very cautious approach to what we think we’ll save – publicly we’ve said we’ll make 40% savings but I would expect it to be more.” A display panel on the energy converter - located in the youth club - shows the amount of energy that the solar panels are producing on a daily basis. “We’re inviting schools to come down and see for themselves what the solar panels are capable of achieving.”

SOLAR Solar Electric installed the solar panels last August. “When I started investigating who could carry out the installation, I noticed that a lot of companies are involved in installing the panels that use water,” said Mark. “Not so many install the purely electric solar panels. That’s partly why we went with Solar Electric in Wexford, a company that had carried out the largest solar panel project in Ireland. The work was

completed in three days, there was no inconvenience, and the firm was extremely efficient.” Efficiency is guaranteed for 25 years with the solar panels. “A total of 39 panels were installed,” explained Mark. “Within a year I’ll have all the figures, but I can say for certain that we’ll get our money back. Even with the weather we’re having at the moment and the shorter days coming in, I know we’ll be in a much better position, energy-savings-wise, in a year’s time.” Visiting the community centre recently, Denis Naughten, Minister at the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment, said, “We’re hoping that people will look at projects like this and realise that it makes sense. People can see that this is not halfbaked or cracked — it does save money. Energy prices will continue to rise. That’s the trajectory. We need to be far more energy-secure in this country. “We have good renewable energy sources and we need to concentrate and support those. This all makes sense from a consumer point of view — it makes homes far more comfortable to live in, it reduces the energy bills, but it also

protects us in relation to the long-term effects of climate change.” In Cork, the North Cathedral, Ballyvolane Fire Station, Blackpool Shopping Centre and car park, UCC, Leisureworld in Bishopstown and council housing at Ardbhaile and Glenamoy in Mayfield have all benefitted from an estimated €3million investment in energy-efficiency projects — insulation, LED lighting or solar panels — under the BEC scheme during the year. Around the country, the scheme has supported 300 community energy-efficiency projects over the last five years, with more than 15,000 homes and hundreds of community, private and public buildings receiving energyefficiency upgrades. The Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment has confirmed that €25million will be made available in 2017 for more BEC scheme energy-efficiency upgrades to over 2,600 homes and almost 300 community and commercial facilities. THE BEST WAY TO BE COMPETITIVE IS TO FOCUS ON SAVING THE TIME THE JOB TAKES, NOT ON TRYING TO SHAVE A FEW PENNIES OFF THE COST OF THE GOODS YOU INSTALL, ARGUES TIMEGUARD MD ANDY DOUGLAS…

Make it easy W hen you quote for a job, customers will either have been asking friends and family or Google, what they should expect to pay, so you might not have much room for manoeuvre. So you need to work smarter, by investing in goods that are quicker and easier to install. Word of mouth is powerful, and spreads faster than ever these days. It’s taken on new dimensions with internet sites that rate traders and local neighbourhood forums. The world will soon know if you’ve installed duff products, whether the job was fitting a fused spur for £50/e56 or rewiring a family home for £5,000/e5,558. You simply cannot afford the risk of being associated with failing products. The best way to boost your productivity and profitability is by minimising the time it takes to do, and avoiding altogether the need ever to go back and put a bad job right.

WORKING FASTER You’ve probably got a good idea how long a task should take, based on experience, but I’d like to suggest that you look again at some of the routine jobs. Our focus on the installer market has included a determination to design products that you can fit much faster.

Refinements like bigger wiring blocks, replaceable cable knock-outs, glands shaped for UK’s oval cables, or putting all the wiring in an outdoor light’s back box so that the heavier floodlight can be clipped on in seconds, all give you time (as do wall brackets that won’t remind you of trying to build flat-pack furniture). Squeezing extra functionality like timing and RCD protection into standard back boxes, so that you only need to make a simple wire-for-wire replacement, have been another great leap forward, pioneered by Timeguard. Of course, quality counts, and key things to look out for are how many years the manufacturer has been prepared to guarantee the goods for, and that they are tested and rated to do the job you have in mind. For instance, lower-quality PIR switches might not have been tested with the LED inrush currents associated with their rating. At Timeguard, we were among the first manufacturers to highlight this problem and give a clear indication of tested LED ratings on the boxes.

WORKING SMARTER Looking inside the box pays dividends – especially if there’s no information on the outside. It will show you how easy and quick (or hard and seemingly-endless)

wiring anything from a PIR to a porch light up is going to be. For instance, putting all the wiring in the back box is another way we help to give you precious time. It’s obviously going to be much easier to wire in a small back box and then simply clip on the heavier light and reflector unit, than battle with the whole system at the top of a ladder. By pre-fitting PIR or photocell sensors to the wiring blocks, we turn installation into even-quicker plug-and-play. This year, we’ve added even-larger wiring blocks to our latest range of LED lighting, with an extra terminal available for looping out. Ever had to start again because you made the wrong knock-out? Why not choose Timeguard products with replaceable knock-outs, like our Weathersafe Vision outdoor sockets. Captive screws are always a good idea too – check out our new LED range for an example of that. In summary - fit kit that’s been designed with a focus on what you, the installer, need in terms of reliability and easy installation. You’ll benefit from good reviews and endorsements, and maybe even a shorter working day. T: (NI) 020 8452 1112 or (RoI) 0044 20 8452 1112 E: sales@timeguard.com W: www.timeguard.com

BPS 35TH ANNIVERSARY

PROTECTING PROPERTIES – AND LIVES – ACROSS THE UK AND IRELAND, BPS HAS CEMENTED ITS POSITION AS MARKET LEADER IN THE FIRE AND SECURITY MARKETPLACE…

Building Protection Systems (NI) Ltd - 35 years and counting

T

he year 2016 has been a stellar one for Building Protection Systems (NI) Ltd, as it celebrates 35 years of success in business as an independent specialist. During those years, BPS has grown to become the largest independently-owned specialist electronic fire and security services company in Northern Ireland. “We’re a local independent, offering a personal service,” said Managing Director, Calvin Adams. “Providing both new build solutions and maintenance contracts for companies throughout the UK and Ireland, we can procure and deliver on projects of any size, from £200 up to £2million, supplying everything from fire detection systems to specialist electronic protection devices, such as pool drown alarms. “We offer design assistance to consulting engineers, design and build project teams, and PFI consortia. Plus, we currently provide

supply and installation services to most notable M&E contractors in the SME and multi-national project marketplace, as well as providing aftercare service and maintenance. “We are fully accredited and have worked with all the major contractors in Northern Ireland across a broad spectrum of work, but with particular specialism in the healthcare sector,” continued Calvin. “We’re the ‘goto’ people – customers come for one-stop provision of fire and security solutions and we are proud of the fact that a lot of our business comes through word of mouth recommendation. “Without a quality, experienced, and dedicated workforce, we couldn’t provide that high level of service expected by our customers. Their continued dedication, and commitment to the success of BPS is greatly appreciated, as is the continued loyalty of our many customers over the years.”

THE JOURNEY Building Protection Systems was established in 1981 by Philip Cunningham and David McCombe as a fire alarm service organisation. In 1985, BPS was appointed Zettler UK Fire Systems’ agent for the island of Ireland, which remained the case until Zettler was purchased by Tyco in 1996. This was the start of the BPS specialism within the health sector, as Zettler Fire Systems was successful in providing new fire systems for a number of Northern Ireland hospitals. As a supplier, commissioner, and maintainer of fire detection and alarm systems, BPS was successful in developing many longterm customers, a number of whom are still customers today. As a ‘go-to’ choice of fire alarm specialist for major project works and large service contracts, BPS became the preference of many customers in Northern Ireland.

“I believe we are currently the best F&S specialist in Northern Ireland, always striving to remain competitive whilst embracing new technologies, and providing a service ahead of others.”

BPS 35TH ANNIVERSARY

Top team BPS has recently added to its team of dedicated professionals with some new appointments Andrew Craig, Service Manager; Oswald (Ozzy) Gordon, Projects Manager; and Connor Rodgers, Technical Sales and Business Development. The admin team has also been enhanced with the appointment of James O’Brien as Procurement Coordinator; and Siobhan McMahon and Stacey Nelson as Service Coordinators. Thirty years as a Key Partner with Morley-IAS Fire Systems by Honeywell was recognised at the BPS 35th anniversary night with a presentation from Tony Green, UK and Ireland Sales Manager, Morley IAS by Honeywell (left), to BPS Managing Director, Calvin Adams.

Helen Stone and Linda Riddell joined BPS in 1989, and are still contributing greatly some 27 years later. In late 1999, Calvin Adams joined the company as Sales Director, after spending 16 years as an M&E consulting engineer with some of the most respected M&E practices in the province. Coinciding with Calvin’s appointment, BPS recognised that a more sustainable approach for expansion was to diversify into the associated field of security systems. “This, together with our proven strength in fire systems, was a strategy which was to signal our growth to becoming one of very few specialists capable of undertaking some of the most significant new projects in the field of fire and security systems in Northern Ireland,” said Calvin. “Together with our continuing success in securing and retaining significant service customers, it contributed to our successful journey in growing to what we are today.” After ‘buying in’ to take a

minority shareholding in BPS in 2000, Mark Gillespie and Calvin completed a management buy-out of BPS in 2002, with Philip and David retiring from the company. BPS had at that time 22 employees. Clive Kinnear joined BPS in 2001, strengthening the company’s ability to design and sell new integrated security systems, together with the design of fire systems already catered for. BPS has continued to grow, becoming a company with a peak employee number of 50 team members. Mark retired in April 2015, leaving Calvin in sole ownership of the company.

INDEPENDENT “We remain an independent company, privately owned but with the buying power of a multi-national, and with most of our competitors’ being multi-national organisations – this is a fact we are hugely proud of,” said Calvin. “We have a desire to be the best at what we do, and I believe we are currently the best F&S specialist in Northern

Ireland, always striving to remain competitive whilst embracing new technologies, and providing a service ahead of others. “We do not rest on our laurels, but constantly seek continual improvement, an ethos we are now extending into the UK mainland, recently taking an address in Hertfordshire as a launch pad for the next step in BPS’s growth. We have already secured significant projects in London, Nottingham, Bristol, and Aberdeen - not forgetting our continuing success within our core market in Northern Ireland. “As well as Morley IAS Fire Systems by Honeywell, other key distributorships were secured over the intervening period, such as Inner Range Integrated Access Control and Intrusion System, and Honeywell Security and Video Systems. These, combined with last year becoming a Gent by Honeywell Systems Integrator have cemented our position as market leader in the fire and security marketplace.”

SERVICE MANAGER, Andrew Craig. “I lead the service team, ensuring our service level agreements and key performance indicators are at the top end of what our extensive customer base expects and deserves. My job is made easy by the skills and qualities of our coordination team and service technicians.” PROJECTS MANAGER, Oswald (Ozzy) Gordon. “I plan and manage the delivery of all labour and material aspects of what we do, in terms of new fire and security project works. I have a team of dedicated senior field engineers who lead the highly skilled field technicians and ensure we deliver projects to the level of quality which meets or exceeds customer expectations.” TECHNICAL SALES & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, Connor Rodgers. “I am charged with developing new customer business opportunities for the company from both a fire and security and sales and service perspective.”

CASE STUDY – FANE VALLEY, MOIRA

NEW HEAD OFFICE FOR PROGRESSIVE AGRI-FOOD BUSINESS INCORPORATES A COSTEFFECTIVE LIGHTING SOLUTION…

Hilclare lights up Fane Valley

H

ilclare Lighting has carried out a lighting upgrade at the headquarters of Fane Valley in Moira. The farmer-owned co-operative is now one of Ireland’s most progressive agri-food businesses, with interests in red meats, porridge oats and breakfast cereal, feed compounding, agricultural supplies, and renewable energy, operating across Europe. Working with Stephen Clarke Consulting Ltd, Hilclare Lighting designed a bespoke solution to meet the specific lighting requirements of the company while also keeping energy costs to a minimum. “When considering a lighting upgrade, reducing future energy costs is now as important as the initial investment,” said Steven McMurray, Hilclare Lighting’s Project Engineer for Northern Ireland. “Our extensive range allows us to meet a wide range of requirements but, just as importantly, we can combine this with a cost-effective design.”

This project included a number of LED solutions such as Seville, Destello and Cataluna. A range of low-profile recessed modular luminaires with a back-lit LED light source, the Seville LED Panel is suitable for use in many interior applications including offices, hospitals, hotels and retail areas. They proved the perfect fit at Fane Valley where they were installed alongside the attractive, low-profile design of Cataluna LED. Simple to install with either ceiling or suspension mounting, this range comes with a wide range of LED wattages. The new Fane Valley board room is lit using the dimmable Destello range. This adjustable LED gimbal in a square recessed bezel is also suitable for use in foyers, display areas and other areas in commercial buildings and retail shops. The Fane Valley project also included lighting from the Bandera, Destello, Hachero1 and Perez ranges.

“When considering a lighting upgrade, reducing future energy costs is now as important as the initial investment.”

Bandera downlights are a range of recessed wide-beam LED downlight luminaires, suitable for use in foyers, meeting rooms, corridors and other areas in commercial buildings and retail shops while the Destello is an adjustable LED gimbal in a recessed bezel that offers a range of recessed, individually adjustable, LED display luminaires. The surface-mounted Hachero1 are not only decorative but, thanks to the range’s adaptability, come with many diffuser, finish and light source options that can be tailored to the project’s requirements. The Perez range is an economy IP65 corrosion-resistant luminaire, designed to be surface, suspension, trunking or cable tray mounting. “This was a straightforward project for us but only due to the fact that our extensive range is able to meet so many different requirements,” added Steven. “On projects such as this - where you have to consider a lot of various requirements – that can make all the difference.”

CABLES

JASON HALLAM, TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION MANAGER, CPN-CUDIS ANSWERS SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FLYING NEUTRAL AND FUNCTIONAL EARTH CABLES ON SINGLE-POLE CPN RCBOS… A. No, only live is disconnected, and this applies to most other manufacturers. However, CPN offers a range of RCBOs for all applications.

Flying cables FAQs Q. Why do some RCBOs have no functional earth? A. RCBOs do not have to have a separate earth connection to meet the standard EN61009. The UK seems to be one of a very few countries that have a functional earth facility. Eventually, with the CPN single-pole RCBs, you may see the functional earth facility disappearing.

Q. What is the fly small functional earth cable for? A. This is used in the event of a loss of neutral during an earth fault giving the RCBO reference to earth. At least one incident of loss of neutral supply is reported each day in the UK. Q. What colour should the functional earth cable be? A. In most cases this will be cream/ white. Q. Can I extend functional earth cable? A. Yes, this is not a problem. Q. Can I group the functional earth cables when connecting into the earth box? A. This is plausible but we would recommend that they are connected to the earth bar with the corresponding circuit for clear identification.

CPN offers a range of MCB-sized RCBOs for single-phase applications up to 32A.

Q. Can I shorten or lengthen the flying neutral cable? A. Yes. If shortened, ensure that the end is correctly terminated – eg with a boot lace ferrule – before connection is made into the neutral bar. If the neutral flying lead is required to be longer, ensure that you select an adequate splicing crimp which is properly insulated, and that the same CSA of cable is used.

www.elecmagazine.com

FOLLOW US ON:

Q. Can I cut off the functional earth cable? A. No, this is bad practice. Even though testing of the RCBOs, as required by BS7671, will be fine, we, as a manufacturer would not recommend this as the RCBO has been type-tested and certified with the functional earth attached. Q. Do CPN single-pole RCBOs which are used in consumer units and distribution boards disconnect neutral?

Q. Can I use single-pole RCBS for caravan parks and marinas? A. No, single-pole switching of the live conductor only, and not the neutral, does not meet the requirements as set out in BS7671 Regulation 708.553.1.13 for caravan parks, and Regulation 709.531.2 for marinas and similar locations. When using RCBOs for these applications, a double-pole RCBO, which disconnects live and neutral conductors, must be used. This would also apply to three-phase applications in these locations. Q. Can I mount RCBOs horizontally? A. Yes, this is most common in threephase distribution boards. Q. Why doesn’t CPN offer a 50A or 63A RCBO? A. CPN is working towards higher current RCBOs. Having a high current rating, in such a compact space, with a neutral supply, has its challenges. Q. Do I have to disconnect the cables (eg the functional earth and neutral cables) when carrying out an insulation resistance test? A. Yes, we need to remember that insulation resistance testing is for the installation only and not the protective device. Subject to voltages used, this could cause damage to the electronic component within the RCBO if not disconnected.

GOING FORWARD RCBOs are getting smaller and more compact. CPN offers a range of MCB-sized RCBOs for single-phase applications up to 32A, providing you with some welcome space in your enclosures. CPN also offers double-pole RCBOs, which allow the switching of live and neutral up to 32A in B and C curve for applications such as marinas and caravan parks, along with the traditional double polesized RCBO. uring the winter months we spend much more of our time indoors due to darker evenings and colder weather. However, daylight has the ability to invigorate and promote a sense of wellbeing, so interior lighting with adjustable output and colour temperatures should be a serious consideration. In the Enlite Edition 4 catalogue, there is a luminaire that changes colour and dims at the push or rotation of a button. The PolaCX colour switching and dimmable downlight is ideal for creating the perfect mood or environment. It works with a standard rotary dimmer switch, so the colour temperature can be adjusted as required. A colour temperature of 2700K

AWARDS

IRISH COMPANIES MAKE €100MILLION IN ENERGY SAVINGS AS THIS YEAR’S AWARDS AGAIN DEMONSTRATE THE COMMITMENT TO CUT ENERGY COSTS…

Winners unveiled in SEAI Awards E

Pictured (from left) are Tim Lucey, Chief Executive, Cork County Council, winner of The Public Sector Award; Paul Walsh, Campus Ireland Energy Lead, J&J Ireland, winner of the coveted Leadership Award; and Kevin Barry, Dell EMC, winner of the Large Business Award at the 2016 SEAI Sustainable Energy Awards. Pic:Naoise Culhane.

ntrants to this year’s Sustainable Energy Awards show Ireland is on the right path to reducing carbon emissions. Presented by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and sponsored by Enprova, the 2017 Sustainable Energy Awards have once again demonstrated the commitment Irish companies have when it comes to reducing energy costs and CO2 emissions. Amongst this year’s winners were Cosgrave Developments who scooped the Buildings Award for the development of super energy efficient homes. These homes include a district heating system, payas-you-go billing and Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems with a special device to incorporate a load management module to allow home-owners to maximise electricity output on site. This helps reduce energy bills and energy usage and also minimises dispatch to the grid. In addition, homeowners can use a remote control option on their smart phones to control their heating from anywhere in the world. The Innovation Award went to DaysE for the creation of a ‘Donate As You Save’ fundraising model which uses energy savings as a means of raising funds for energy projects in non-profit organisations. The model facilitates the transfer of energy savings and/or energy credits from donors to charities; the donations are then used by

the charity to implement energy upgrades to reduce their energy bills and running costs. The Community Award went to Camphill Communities of Ireland for their Better Energy Communities project, which involved energy upgrades to 78 projects including commercial, residential and community buildings. These measures included biogas electricity generation systems, biomass boilers installations, solar panels and a wind turbine. The annual energy savings have been estimated at €300,000 which is equivalent to a 20% reduction in energy use. Also a winner on the night was Cork County Council, which walked away with the Public Sector Award. As the first local authority in Ireland to develop and implement an Energy Management System that’s fully certified to ISO 50001, the council has managed to create a template that will undoubtedly be implemented by other local authorities. J&J Campus Ireland won the big award of the night – the Leadership Award – for reducing CO2 emissions between four Johnson & Johnson Irish-based companies by 20% by the year 2020. Speaking on the night, Jim Gannon CEO, SEAI, said, “€100 million is the highest figure for collective savings made by companies since the Awards began 13 years ago. As CEO of SEAI, I am immensely

proud of the successes achieved by the finalists in bringing innovative solutions to energy management. The organisations here are not only leaders domestically but globally and I commend all those who took part in the Awards on their energy achievements and encourage them to keep the momentum going and inspire others to take action.”

The ECI Lighting team outside their new Belfast premises – (from left) Paul Jackson, Area Manager; Steven Gregg, Telephone Sales/Stores; Peter Brady, Sales Director; Conor Trainor, Telephone Sales/Stores; and Denise McNicholl, Administration Manager.

NEW PREMISES, GROWING STAFF AND CONTINUED PRODUCT EVOLUTION HIGHLIGHTS A RANGE OF POSITIVES IN WORKING WITH THIS LEADING LIGHTING DISTRIBUTOR…

Belfast expansion benefits ECI Lighting’s customers T he growth of ECI Lighting has continued with the company opening new premises in Belfast and expanding its team in Northern Ireland. After outgrowing the company’s former premises at North City Business Park, ECI Lighting has now moved to Duncrue Industrial Estate, opening a new trade counter, complete with lighting displays. However, the big addition is the expanded warehouse facilities that have enhanced the stock levels available to customers. “Our focus is all about customer service and now that we have more than doubled

the size of our warehouse we are able to react even quicker to meet customer needs,” explained Paul Jackson, ECI Lighting Area Manager who heads up the Belfast team. “Our former premises simply weren’t big enough to meet the growing demand for our products and we have been searching extensively over the last two years to find the right location. With our new location so central to a wide range of electrical wholesalers and with so many contractors coming in and out of the area we have already noticed an increase in business, so

the location has provided us with an even stronger foundation.” ECI Lighting continues to look ahead with optimism and, in addition to the company’s continuing product evolution, ECI Lighting is also expanding its personnel. “We have added one new member of staff to the Belfast team and we want to recruit more, specifically on the specification aspect of lighting,” added Paul. “At present our lighting design is carried out by our team in Dublin but we are keen to offer that service in Belfast and will soon be actively recruiting to fill this role.

“These are exciting times for the company and we are confident that our product range and service will continue to prove to be a winning combination.”

Quality that stands the test of time

“These are exciting times for the company and we are confident that our product range and service will continue to prove to be a winning combination.” ECI Lighting has clearly worked hard to find the much sought-after balance between quality products and competitive prices. “That is very important to us and something we pride ourselves on,” said Paul. “While there is a drive to the bottom regarding price, our focus is on the longerterm, with proven products that last. Value for money is the most important aspect.” While the company’s direct route to market is via electrical wholesalers, ECI Lighting works closely with electrical contractors and consultants to provide bespoke solutions for their lighting needs. The customer can then nominate their preferred electrical wholesaler to supply the product range. “We have an extremely strong relationship with the leading electrical wholesalers and we value that relationship,” said Paul. “With our increased warehouse capacity we can now enhance our service to

wholesalers. We have such an extensive range we can meet the requirements of almost every application and we can even tailor the package to work within a strict budget.” With price, availability and product quality all accounted for, ECI Lighting can also add experience to its service package. Area Manager Paul Jackson has been with the company for six years while Steven Gregg joined two-and-a-half years ago and he was joined by Conor Trainor earlier this year, with the pair working on the trade counter and warehouse. They are ably supported by Denise McNicholl who has worked with ECI lighting since it opened in Belfast. The Belfast operation is part of an allIreland network that includes offices in both Dublin and Cork, providing a lighting service you can trust. Paul concluded, “We’re here for the long haul and the opening of our new warehouse and the addition of new staff shows that we are moving forward with confidence.”

Established in 1960 as the Electrical Company of Ireland, ECI Lighting has stood the test of time. With offices in Dublin, Belfast and Cork, for over 55 years the company has provided the industry with recognised leadership, knowledge and expertise in the area of lighting design and supply. ECI Lighting introduced the Prelux LED range as an own-brand solution to meet the increasing demand for affordable, high-quality, energy-efficient fixtures. Incorporating the most advanced energy-saving technology, the Prelux range has gone from strength to strength over the past few years and now boasts over 100 models for a broad range of applications. However, this not the only product available from ECI Lighting, with the company representing major names such as: • Ares • Bega • Belid • Deltalight • Florian Light • Fumagalli • Glashutte Limburg

• Lucente • Megaman • Nobile • Orbit Lighting • Prelux LED • Regent • Roxo Lighting • Venture Lighting

These products are available through the company’s strong partnerships with all the leading Irish electrical wholesalers, with ECI Lighting also offering lighting design services to enhance its enviable service package.

ETT believes that customers will benefit from a “better and faster” approach to achieving their objective, of gaining one or more of the industry approved Level 3 qualifications. Chris Walker, ETT, commented, “There

are two advantages for our customers when choosing EAL. First of all, the online exam requirement for the initial verification award is reduced from two exams, to one. Secondly, the online exams, are open book. That means you can bring Guidance Note 3 into the exam with you. ECS EMPLOYER PORTAL ALLOWS YOU TO MANAGE ALL YOUR OPERATIVES’ CARDS IN ONE PLACE…

New employer portal eases ECS card admin

C

ompanies that employ a number of staff with ECS cards are benefitting from a new system that eases the process of multiple card applications. The ECS Employer Portal, launched by the JIB, allows companies to manage all their operatives’ ECS cards in one place. Initial card applications and renewals can be processed via the portal, along with the facilities to view all ECS cards registered to a company and their expiry date, upload documents directly as part of the application process, and monitor the progress of an application. The portal also complements the online ECS Health & Safety System, and will display the outcome of a health and safety assessment as soon as the result is available.

www.elecmagazine.com

Boulting Group was one of the initial employers to use the portal. “Previously, we spent a lot of resources around paperwork, forms, cheques and queries - it was extremely time consuming and not very cost-effective,” said Labour Administrator, Eileen Grantham. “The portal is saving us time and money – it’s more efficient, user friendly, and turnaround times for cards are much faster. It’s allowed us to minimise queries and deal with issues more effectively than before.” The portal is a free to access and is best suited to companies which have more than 10 members of staff with an ECS card. JIB members can also secure a discount on the ECS card fees by using the portal. W: www.ecscard.org.uk/portal

CASE STUDY – DUBLIN AIRPORT

THANKS TO A RANGE OF ENERGY EFFICIENT INITIATIVES, THE AIRPORT HAS BEEN GRANTED ISO 50001 CERTIFICATION…

Energy takes off at Dublin Airport

T

he result of two years’ hard work, Dublin Airport has been recognised and rewarded for the quality of its energy management and efficiency systems. Achieving the ISO 50001 Certification brings the airport that bit closer to its target of improving its energy efficiency by one third within the next three years. ISO 50001 Certification is an International Energy Management Standard (EMS) that establishes systems and process necessary to improve energy performances including energy efficiency, use and consumption. The award was made by Certification Europe, the world’s leading accredited certification body, in relation to energy management system certification. Dublin Airport Asset Care Campus Manager, Martin McGonagle, said the award demonstrates exemplar energy performance at the airport. “We are delighted to receive this certification which is the culmination of two years’ hard work and great team work, led by the Asset Care department and supported by many departments at Dublin Airport. “Achieving this standard will support us on our journey towards achieving an energy improvement target of 33% by 2020 as part of the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2009 and Public Sector Energy Partnership Programme.”

“Achieving this standard will support us on our journey towards achieving an energy improvement target of 33% by 2020.” www.elecmagazine.com

FOLLOW US ON:

In order to receive the certification, Martin and his team implemented a number of energy saving measures at the airport, including: • Lighting retrofit of Terminal 1 with LED energy efficient lighting. • Smart lighting control installed in car parks allowing for lighting to be adjusted to occupancy profiles. • Pumps replaced on potable water system resulting in more efficient pumps. • Main boilers upgraded in Terminal 1 and campus areas with energy efficient burners. • Operation schedules revised and tighter control of the Building Management Systems (BMS). • Awareness initiatives carried out throughout the year across the campus. In other good news, Dublin Airport has also been shortlisted for an Aviation Award in the category of Aviation Sustainability & Environment. The award recognises the achievements of organisations that have introduced measures to reduce CO2 emissions, fuel consumption, carbon footprint, noise abatement. Winners will be announced on December 7, 2016. The team at Dublin Airport will continue to introduce energy conservation measures now and into the future. Just some of the measures planned for the near future include a project to replace the long term car park surface lighting with low energy LED lights; the installation of solar PV at the reservoir site; a replacement of the existing high mast lighting with low energy LED lighting; and the installation of a new smart

metering system to track performance and identify opportunities for improvement and allow the airport share detailed profiles with its customers. “We have been managing energy at Dublin Airport for many years and continued success requires a long term, planned approach that involves anyone who can impact or influence energy use. The standard has helped us to embed energy management throughout the organisation from design to end user”, said Martin.

Benefits of ISO 50001 and why it’s worth it • Reduced greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions and carbon footprint • Increased knowledge of equipment efficiencies. • Informed decision-making processes from system design through to operation • Increased energy awareness among staff members at all levels • Structured approach to the Right First Time methodologies • Improved corporate image and credibility with all stakeholders and customer • Enhanced security of energy supply as you will have identified your energy risk exposure in areas within the organisation and commenced processes to reduce them • Improved operational efficiencies and maintenance practices

WORKFLOW MANAGEMENT

REACT IRELAND STREAMLINES WORKFLOW PROCESSES AND IMPROVES BUSINESS PERFORMANCE THANKS TO WORKPAL…

Mobile workflow management solution from WorkPal

O

ne of Ireland’s leading full-service providers for property insurance claims, React, has benefited from using WorkPal, an awardwinning software solution from Barclay Communications for mobile workflow management, reporting, tracking and invoicing. “React has a team of fully trained technicians and provides a 24-hour emergency response service. All of the heaters carrry an energy rating of A+. The Plusheat range is perfect for projects that want effective heating that also looks good and from a contractor’s perspective, the good news is that this range is easy and simple to install. All this comes with the added incentive of costeffective heating that is a clear alternative to more traditional methods. The Plusheat range provides eight main options –

• Mirror – This versatile heated mirror can be used in bathroom, bedrooms, salons etc. The use of titan glass maximises the heat output. It is available in different sizes and designs including a circular and backlit LED option. No condensation will form on the mirror and this will eliminate damp and mould.

• Aluminium – In terms of both range, width and positioning options, Plusheat’s Satin Aluminium heaters are the most versatile and flexible panels on offer. Operating at a fraction of the cost of traditional heating, they offer superior design and comfort levels. The panels can be used in both domestic and commercial environments. They can be flush or surface mounted to the wall or ceiling and also come in a variety of colours and sizes. Bespoke designs can also be offered such as a personalised picture on the heating panel.

• Power Heater – This range is specifically designed to heat space that requires a more powerful direct heat such as internal areas with high ceilings, such as warehouses, factories or external applications. Water resistant to IP65, the Impact Power Heater has a proven track record in difficult-toheat or expensive-to-heat situations. With no maintenance or servicing, its stylish, contemporary appearance provides savings of up to 42% against alternative forms of electric heating.

• Glass – Glass is an excellent medium for infrared heaters and operates at a fraction of the cost of traditional heating. The Plusheat range of glass infrared heaters are both stylish and elegant, offering an unsurpassed heat output. Available in three panel sizes – 450, 600 and 900 watts – the Plusheat Glass range provides high output infrared heating and consistent thermal comfort. This is on top of the designer-inspired elegance.

• Underfloor heating – Infrared carbon underfloor film technology is combined with the best of modern nanotechnology and a simple AC power connection. Only 70% of the area to be heated needs covered and the speed and ease of installation keeps costs to a minimum. Suitable for under all wood, laminates and carpeted floors, this range can also be used on screed flooring with tiles or lino coverings.

BUDGET REPORT

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SEVEN YEARS, THE GOVERNMENT HAS PLACED CLIMATE CHANGE AT THE FOREFRONT OF IRISH POLITICS. BUT WILL THE MEASURES OUTLINED IN BUDGET 2017 DO ENOUGH TO HELP IRELAND MEET ITS LOW CARBON TARGETS?

New measures to make Ireland even greener! T his year’s budget saw Minister for Finance Michael Noonan and Minister for Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe address the challenges posed by climate change for the first time since the recession began. Several measures were outlined that are intended to help Ireland meet its target of a low carbon economy but concerns have been raised by some groups who feel these measures don’t go far enough. As part of Budget 2017, the Government has announced that it will spend over €100million on energy projects in 2017 with the aim of reducing our carbon emissions by 116,000 each year and supporting 3,000 jobs. Plans to expand energy efficiency and renewable energy programmes across the country at a cost of €24million were also announced, while €500,000 will be invested in a forum to discuss best climate practices. There’s some relief for home-owners too; €7million has been allocated to a new Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme, and €2million will be given to the Better Energy Homes Scheme to support individual householders in making energy efficiency improvements to their homes. The Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) has indicated that the design consultation paper for the Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme should be issued prior to the end of 2016 and that a scheme may be operational by Q3 2017 (this scheme was first announced in 2013). A €4million Better Energy Communities Scheme

and a €8m Warmth and Wellbeing pilot scheme for people living in energy poverty were also announced. Other measures designed to meet the challenge of climate change include the following: • A relief from vehicle registration on electric vehicles for five years, as well as extending the relief for hybrids for two years. • Drivers of large vehicles will be encouraged to switch from diesel to natural gas. • All solid fuels that have a biomass element will gain a relief from carbon tax. • €50million in capital spending will be spent on the Renewable Heat Incentive, better energy grants as well as the electric vehicles subsidy. • The Green Low-Carbon Agri Environmental Scheme (GLAS) will increase to €211 million. Although the Government has acknowledged it will not reach its goal of retrofitting one million houses by 2020, this year will, however, see an additional 25,000 homes insulated. While all these measures have

been largely welcomed, the Government has been criticised for failing to go the extra mile and for not implementing initiatives that would go much further in helping the country deliver on its EU 2020 renewable energy target. Green Party leader, Eamon Ryan, pointed to a lack of funding for new public transport projects and for no new initiatives to set Ireland on the path to being a clean economy. Other groups have derided the Government for failing to include incentives to reduce consumption, waste or pollution and for not considering mandatory feed-in tariffs for renewable energy producers. Support tariffs for Irish solar and offshore wind development, which could go much further in helping the country deliver on its EU 2020 renewable energy targets, have also been called for since the Budget 2017. Opinion is split on whether these climate change measures go far enough but it seems everyone is in agreement that they’re a step in the right direction. Whether it’s a step that has come too late remains to be seen.

CABLES

WITH SUBSTANDARD CABLES CONTINUING TO MAKE THEIR WAY INTO THE SUPPLY CHAIN, IT’S VITAL THAT INSTALLERS BUY FROM RELIABLE MANUFACTURERS SUCH AS CLYNDER CABLES…

Quality guaranteed with Clynder Cables

ontractors and distributors need to be more vigilant and proactive to ensure that they avoid the hazard of substandard cable within the cable supply chain, according to the ACI. Contractors should look for BS or other relevant standard numbers, to ensure that their cable choice has a reference number or UK cable code and to check the number of cores and nominal cross sectional area, says the ACI. It is also important to detail the order with quantity and lengths of cable required and to note the manufacturer’s details for every drum to help with traceability. protection, and they should always check for the correct cable mark. Clynder Cables has over 30 years of experience in the supply of UKmanufactured industrial electrical cables to the UK, European and international markets, specialising in single core cables, such as its famous Tri-rated cable. The company holds both UL and CSA accreditations to ensure reliability through high-quality products with consistent colour and short lead times. Tri-rated cable is a flexible PVC cable that is flame retardant and can be used in high

working temperatures. It is used for switch control in relay and instrumentation panels of power switchgear and also for purposes such as internal connectors in rectifier equipment, motor starters and controllers. Overall Achievement Award

BIM

VINCENT BYRNE, PROJECT ENGINEER AT SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC IRELAND, DISCUSSES THE BENEFITS OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING (BIM)…

The benefits of BIM B uilding Information Modelling (BIM) is changing how buildings, infrastructure, and utilities are planned, designed and built. The move from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to BIM has been heralded as an evolutionary advancement in buildingdesign technology. This new approach promises to turn building plans into virtual libraries of equipment data and requirements – including, for example, product specifications, electrical connections and clearance requirements. BIM software provides a robust framework for building out complex 3D representations of building systems, and it has already had a significant impact on the electrical contracting industry.

BENEFITS FOR ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS

TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED

The main aim of the BIM strategy is to reduce waste and create a more efficient programme delivery. This should improve the contractor’s margins and reduce contractual conflicts as it breaks down the work silos and promotes collaborative working environments. There are numerous economic gains and other efficiencies on offer through the use of BIM. A number of the cost-saving examples have been centred around clash detection and waste reduction, both at the design stage and construction. Going forward, there will also be financial benefits in the facilities management of the building, thanks to defined maintenance and repair cost reduction.

The driving technology behind BIM is more advanced when compared to other IT related design tools such as 3D modelling. Of course, 3D modelling and clash detection form an important part of BIM, but BIM is much more than that. BIM Level 2 is a set of coordinated information which is both geometric and data centric. It is produced in a collaborative way across all of the disciplines and trades, and delivered in an electronic format. Recently, Schneider Electric partnered with BIMobject, Europe’s largest digital content management system for BIM objects. This partnership provides engineers, architects and designers with access to a range of Schneider Electric products through the BIMobject Library.

THE FUTURE The industry as a whole is just beginning the BIM journey, with many still needing to get on board. Those who are not BIM-ready, or not actively using it, may well start to find that their pool of potential projects starts to dwindle. However, Ireland has a window of opportunity to capitalise on the success of its domestic programme and to become an advocate of BIM on a global scale. By embracing BIM, we can enhance the global image of Irish designers, contractors and product manufacturers as a whole, and drive industry-wide growth opportunities for all involved. BUSINESS BOOMS IN LITTLE ISLAND AS ELECTRICAL WHOLESALER UPGRADES TO LARGER, PURPOSE-BUILT FACILITIES IN A NEW LOCATION…

Eastern Electrical Cork opens new premises

E

astern Electrical in Little Island, County Cork, has a lot to celebrate at the moment. Moving from a small facility to larger, purpose-built premises in a much more convenient location in Little Island has proven to be a smart move for the branch. As well as maintaining its core customer base, staff have seen an increase in customers who are keen to check out the diverse range of products available at the busy trade counter. In turn, the 18 members of staff are well equipped to deal with even the most obscure customer query, such is the level of training that all staff receive. Paul O’Brien has been manager at Eastern Electrical in Little island since 2004. He began his career as a sales rep in the branch in 2000 and, since then, has seen significant changes in the industry. “In 2008 and 2009, we had a very tough time,” he said. “The construction industry was in the throes of the recession, and that

downturn had a big impact on us. “In 2008 we were fortunate to be taken over by EWL. Their business model suited the culture we have here and allowed us to take the pain that came with the recession. By the time we got to 2010, we had the basic fundamentals in place to allow us to start growing again. Since then, we’ve grown year on year and have gone from eight people in 2009 to 18 today.”

NEW START The branch’s success has led to its recent move to a modern 18,000sqft facility in the Euro Business Park in Little Island - a move that’s certain to allow Eastern Electrical Cork to continue to grow and prosper. The old premises were 11,000sqft and the difference, according to Paul, is enormous. “We fitted out the new place from scratch and received a lot of input from Jon Bloom, Edmundson Electrical’s Property Manager,

as well as all staff. Being part of EWL also meant we were able to benefit from their expertise. Everyone, from sales to admin, put their tuppence-worth in to come up with something that we’re very proud of. “The larger, more modern premises has boosted the morale of the staff and we’re also getting a great response from customers and suppliers to the new trade counter. We’ve always had a very wide spectrum of customers who require a very diverse range of products, so it’s crucial that we maintain that product range and ensure all staff members continue to receive the highest level of training.” Given the diversity of the customer base, that knowledge base is a necessity. Eastern Electrical Cork services all sizes of electrical contractor/installer, as well as FM companies and the MRO departments of every type of Industry in the bustling, vibrant, local Cork area.

rom commercial and domestic to industrial, all facets of the industry are catered for at Eastern Electrical in Little Island. “We have a motto here – ‘If electricity goes to it or through it, we do it’. You never know what the next customer walking through the door will ask for, so we prefer to maintain a large, varied range of products at all times, as opposed to a limited range,” explained Paul O’Brien, Manager at Eastern Electrical, Cork. Paul says one of the most popular products at Eastern Electrical at the moment is LED lighting, along with energy-efficient heating. “A great success has been the appointment of Pat Neville as our lighting engineer. With over 20 years’ experience

and high expertise, Pat provides an add-on local service to our customers by delivering bespoke lighting solutions,”said Paul. A major strength of EWL and, therefore, Eastern Electrical is its commitment to satisfying the demands of its customers with high-quality, innovative and cost-effective ‘branded’ products sourced from the world’s leading manufacturers. Constantly adapting to the needs of an ever-changing market has ensured that Eastern Electrical provides the products that the market requires. Paul added, “We are more of a solution provider than just a product provider. We avoid the race to the bottom ranges and, instead, we try to offer best value for money products from established suppliers that provide the best long-term solutions for our

customers.” Through excellent customer service, Paul and his team have developed trust with their customers. “The most important aspect of our job is ensuring the customer is satisfied with both the service and the product,” he said. “If they’re happy, they’ll come back to us again and again. We’re proud of the fact that we have a lot of repeat business.” This repeat business is thanks to a team who embrace the culture here and go that extra mile for their customers. Close relationships with customers have also been developed and have created an element of trust that’s hard to replicate in other wholesalers. All this is backed up with an excellent delivery service covering most of Munster.

The best of both worlds at Eastern Electrical

eing part of the larger EWL group doesn’t mean that Eastern Electrical Cork is unable to forge its own way. EWL - known as Edmundson Electrical in Northern Ireland - operates a highly decentralised business philosophy that allows its local managers to make allimportant business decisions and fine-tune the business’ offerings to the particular needs of its locality. That allows staff in Eastern Electrical in Little Island to offer unbiased advice to find the best solution to customers’ specific needs. Services include knowledgeable technical advice to help customers choose the right product; reliable and fast local delivery service; emergency out-of-hours telephone cover; and a vast, diverse stock of wellknown electrical branded products ready and waiting for customers to choose from. Each and every customer can be sure they’ll be treated with the utmost respect and

courtesy with the emphasis on service, from a knowledgeable and dedicated staff, and competitive pricing. Manager, Paul O’Brien, attributes the success of the trade counter to its staff. “If you want to be successful you must look after your staff - who in turn will look after the customers,” he said. “You often hear a lot of lip service from companies saying their staff are their most important asset, but I think here at Eastern Electrical Cork we truly have a culture and environment that seems to bring the best out of people. “We’ve built up important and long-lasting relationships with customers and it’s gratifying to see them coming through the doors excited to see how we have laid out the new trade counter and sales office. “We’re not afraid to diversify and offer the customer something new, and that’s why we continue to be successful. It’s a challenging place to work, but I’m told by

the staff that they enjoy it!” Staff members include Phil Browne, who was part of the original team who opened the first location in Sitecast Industrial Estate in 1980. “Phil has been a major part of the education and development of new staff members, especially over the last few years. He’ll be retiring next year after 37 years and will be sorely missed,” added Paul. “Roy Cremin, Service Manager and Joe Horgan, Sales Manager, have also been part of Eastern Electrical Cork for nearly 20 years, and they’ve both been of huge support to me over my time here as manager.” Other staff include Gordon Coffey, Evan Horgan, Siobhan Kelly, Kevin Long, Ken Morgan, Ryan Monaghan, Paul Naughton, Pat Neville, Gavin O’Callaghan, Eric O’Leary, Tom O’Neill , Anthony Ronan and Patrick Walsh. LEADING ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR FINDS THE RIGHT BALANCE DURING THIS COMBINED RESTORATION AND NEW BUILD INSTALLATION PROJECT…

Educational excellence from Mac Electrics

T

hey say that every day is a school day and for Mac Electrics that was quite literally the case during a recent education project in Belfast. The company has earned a reputation for excellence in education project recently, having completing around 10 such projects in the last two-and-a-half years. That experience was put to the test during work at Belfast Royal Academy with Mac Electrics having to seamlessly integrate the old with the new. The £4million investment was part of the Government’s School Enhancement Programme and the project included the construction of a new two-storey building to provide purpose-built accommodation for music and learning support together

with the extension and refurbishment of the Jackson building which provided new dining facilities, HE accommodation and toilets. It was that balance between the new build and working in the Listed Building that proved the biggest challenge for Mac Electrics. “Working in the Jackson building offered a lot of different issues and was certainly a lot less straightforward than the new build section of the project,” explained Philip McBirney, Contracts Manager at Mac Electrics. “Restoration projects require a certain skills set but with a Listed Building you have to be additionally respectful of the structure.” The fact that this project incorporated the

latest technology, such as audio-visual touchscreens, energy efficient lighting and fire and security systems, also created a problem. “The existing voids were not created for this high level of service, so it was a bit of balancing act overall. Also, the wiring didn’t always follow the plans that we had and, as the school was operational, we had to ensure that we didn’t just pull the plug and turn the lights off on students and staff. “We are experienced in working in these environments, however, and were able to find suitable solutions to these issues.” As Philip mentioned, the school being fully operational during the project also placed an added emphasis on health and safety and planning. “Health and safety is a priority on every project but having so many pupils and staff on a live site increased the risks overall, so we had a specific plan to deal with this,” he said. “In addition, we also had to be mindful of not disrupting the normal school day so had to carefully plan ahead. For example, we had to think carefully about any work that created a lot of noise or when we scheduled in deliveries. We understand the importance of a flexible approach and of working

closely with the main contractor and the client to ensure the works programme runs smoothly.” This attention to detail is one of the reasons why Mac Electrics is so successful and that is clear to see when you take a closer look at the high standards of finish delivered at the Belfast Royal Academy. From the new recording studios in the music department through to the new dining facilities, Mac Electrics worked closely with main contractor, Felix O’Hare & Co, to create a truly modern school environment. “The finishes are all of a high specification and when you look at the new dining hall, complete with a coffee dock, it is hard to imagine that this is actually a school,” concluded Philip.

This reputation has, more recently, been expanded into the Republic of Ireland. The company is known for its specialist services and its ability to work closely with the main contractor, to ensure projects are completed on time and on budget. EXPERIENCED TEAM FROM NIAVAC PROVIDES BESPOKE AUDIO VISUAL SOLUTIONS TO MEET THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF AN OPEN-PLAN RESOURCE AREA AT BELFAST ROYAL ACADEMY…

Top marks for Niavac N iavac Ltd, the largest independent audio visual (AV) integrator in Northern Ireland, provided a bespoke solution for the Belfast Royal Academy project. “We offer professional full-service AV solutions, including design, installation, maintenance and rental to an extensive customer base within the corporate and public sector in Northern Ireland, and more recently in the Republic of Ireland,” said James Conlon, Niavac’s Managing Director. The company’s growing event division also provides high-quality technical support to organisers of large conferences, award ceremonies, exhibitions and events. “Locally-founded in 1958, we moved to purpose-built £2million premises in Belfast during our 50th year to prepare for growth in the business,” said James. “This included a dedicated showroom with demonstration areas displaying end-to-end solutions with

state-of-the-art technology. It has been described as one of the leading facilities in the UK and Ireland by visitors and customers alike.” Growing year on year, Niavac now has a team of 25 employees, which includes a comprehensive sales, design and installation team.

CLEVER SOLUTION School requirements specified that Belfast Royal Academy needed to be able to use its open-plan resource area for various activities, including teaching, presentations, parent/ teacher evenings, and also as a dining area. “Flexibility, and the ability to use each area individually, or as one large open plan room, was very important to the school, so we proposed installing two Clevertouch interactive touch screens for teaching Niavac is the NI partner of Clevertouch, which is the UK no1 best seller in the

education market,” explained James. “Presentation is via a Hitachi 5500 ANSI lumens WXGA projector, which creates a 2.6m wide image on the ceiling recessed projection screen. This screen is operated using an RF remote control. Control of the projector is via a simple-to-use eight-button keypad. Also, a 60” semi-commercial display is installed in the canteen area that has the ability to show TV via a terrestrial aerial. “The sound installation consists of a PA system which provides the school with three zones of background music. There are also individual volume controls and a wireless handheld microphone. “We pride ourselves in the work we do for our clients, and with strategic innovation leading to a growing client list over the years, the company has reinforced its title as Northern Ireland’s leader in AV solutions. We continue to invest to stay ahead in an up-and-coming marketplace,” added James.

Cabling BELFAST ROYAL ACADEMY

Supportive cabling solutions from S&S Communications

S

&S Communications used Sterling CAT6 cable, modules and patch panels for the structured cabling/data at Belfast Royal Academy. “Our job entailed terminating the modules, which are the data outlets in the rooms,” said Robert Byrne, Sales and Marketing Executive. “We sorted, dressed (tidied) and terminated all the CAT6 cables in the comms room cabinet and also tested each of these points with our Fluke Networks DTX-1800 Cable Analyser, providing a certificate which activates the cable warranty. “Our work also involved labelling each outlet according to its cabinet location.

“The job was carried out over four phases in different areas and included rooms in the main block, canteen, classrooms and offices. All the cables in the first and second phases went to the same main cabinet, while cables for the third and fourth phases went to their own cabinets.” S&S Communications specialises in installing and supporting network voice and data cabling, providing an infrastructure to support all communication requirements. “Whether it’s a new network installation or an upgrade on an existing network, our team is more than capable of providing efficient and reliable services to get the job completed,” added Robert.

TOOLS

BAHCO LEADS THE WAY WITH THE NEW ‘SLIM’ 1,000V INSULATED SCREWDRIVER FOR CONFINED SPACES…

Bahco’s new ‘slim blade’ screwdriver solves old problem

B

ahco designers have solved an old problem which electricians have wrestled with for years - how to reach sunken screws and spring elements in especially confined spaces, safely and easily. Not only is the blade of the new ‘Slim’ 1,000V insulated screwdriver, manufactured by Bahco, 30% narrower than others, but its ergonomic handle is slimmer too. With many 1,000v screwdrivers, the insulation often obstructs and prevents access to low-lying fasteners. Bahco’s ‘extra slim’ solution reduces the blade diameter by using integrated protective insulation. The new screwdriver also enables a higher transfer of force with less effort, while its ergonomic features protect even the toughest hands from the risk of muscle strain or injury. Safety has always been a

top priority for Bahco. All the brand’s insulated screwdrivers are water bath tested at 10,000v to ensure safe working at 1,000v, fully meeting the IEC 60900 standard. The quality of the ‘Slim’ screwdriver blade exceeds current standards relating to hardness by 130% and, in relation to torque strength, by 200%. Several materials, each with individual properties, are used to make the ergonomic handle. A resistant plastic is used for the core, ensuring that the blade is held securely, even under high strain. A softer material is used for the coloured zones, providing high frictional resistance and allowing the transfer of high forces, resulting in less screwdriving effort being required.
