A COLLABORATION PROGRAMME WITH INTERTRADEIRELAND IS RECOGNISED AS WORK WITH GRADUATE, ANTHONY O’CONNOR, AND THE DUNDALK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY CREATE AN EXCITING NEW PROTOTYPE…
Copper Industries secures Exemplar status for innovation
C
opper Industries has become one of five companies from across the island of Ireland to be awarded ‘Exemplar’ status by InterTradeIreland at a prestigious event held in Carton House in Maynooth. The award recognises exceptionally high levels of innovation and collaboration between a company, a graduate and an academic as part of InterTradeIreland’s FUSION programme. InterTradeIreland is the cross-border body that supports SMEs with funding, information and advice and helps businesses to identify and develop trade and business opportunities across the island. FUSION, its technology transfer and innovation programme, partners companies north and south with a third-level institution and provides them with the specialist expertise of a high calibre graduate, who works directly in the organisation, to deliver a new product or process improvement project. Alongside Toomebridge-based Copper Industries, the companies acknowledged included Novegen Ltd, Dublin; Complete Laboratory Solutions, Galway; Aspira Ltd from Cork and Tyrone Fabrication, Ballygawley. Between them, the five FUSION
Copper Industries has been recognised by InterTradeIreland for the development of a prototype, electrically heated cylinder with a built-in control system.
Exemplar companies have reported sales of more than £1.5million and made savings of over £65,000 during their FUSION projects, with projected sales of upwards of £5.75million and savings of £466,000, over the next three years. Copper Industries has already made a name for itself as a company that thrives on innovation, as showcased by the manufacturer’s market-leading range of hot water cylinders, calorifiers and combination units. Through FUSION, Copper Industries employed graduate, Anthony O’Connor, and benefitted from the services and support of Dundalk Institute of Technology. The collaboration enabled the design and development of a prototype, electrically heated cylinder with a built-in control system. This product is now aimed at the domestic market, particularly where oil -fired central heating is not suitable. It is important that we recognise their success, which we hope, in turn, will encourage other SMEs to participate in the FUSION Programme, to improve their productivity, increase their revenue potential and to create real jobs for graduates. I am delighted to congratulate all of our Exemplars on their achievements and I wish them every success in the future.” The award is the latest example of Copper Industries’ commitment to excellence. MAGNETIC FILTER
THE TRIPLE-ACTION APPROACH OF THE REVOLUTIONARY MAG ONE MAGNETIC FILTER WILL HELP COMBAT SLUDGE TO CREATE A MORE EFFICIENT HEATING SYSTEM…
Grant’s innovative Protection for central heating systems
I
n addition to providing reliable, efficient heating solutions for home-owners throughout the UK, Ireland and internationally, leading boiler manufacturer, Grant, has developed the perfect solution to help protect central heating systems with its revolutionary ‘Mag One’ magnetic filter. Grant’s Mag One triple-action filter is highly efficient and identifies and collects all types of non-ferrous debris and magnetite within the central heating system. Mark Eccles, Grant NI explains, “Every central heating system should have a magnetic filter fitted as this will help to prevent breakdowns by helping to reduce magnetic and non-ferrous particulate – or sludge – as it’s often referred to.” Sludge is formed from dirt, water and iron oxide particles. Even small amounts of sludge in a heating system can dramatically decrease its efficiency, causing cold spots in radiators and reducing the lifespan of the boiler. “Designed to reduce the amount of sludge in the heating system, the Grant Mag One can provide many benefits to home-owners, as it can extend the life of the boiler. In addition, it reduces iron deposit blockages in the heating system, and can improve and maintain central heating efficiency which can help to
18 | PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE
reduce home heating bills,” adds Mark. The Grant Mag One is suitable for use with new central heating systems and can be retro-fitted to older ones during boiler replacement or upgrade. “We receive a lot of positive feedback from plumbers and plumbing and heating merchants about the effectiveness of this product. In terms of emptying the filter, this is very straight forward and is normally done by the plumber during the annual boiler service,” Mark concluded. Key Features of the Grant Mag One magnetic filter include: • Filters magnetite and non-ferrous debris • Simple to install • Easy clean, easy drain design • 12000 Gauss Neodymium magnet • Triple action filtration • Installation/ servicing date wheel • Complete with 28mm- 22mm reducers • Full bore flat face 28mm chrome isolation valves • 120°C max working temperature • Manual air bleed • 500ml dosing capacity • 360° installation
Grant’s Mag One offers triple-action protection.
The easy-to-use release tool.
• 6 bar max working pressure • Supplied with spare sealing washers and O-rings • Heavy duty POM filter for non- ferrous material • Hose adaptor for remote draining • Suitable for all heating systems up to 36kW (larger systems use two in a parallel circuit) • Compatible with all system inhibitors and glycol solutions For further information on the Grant Mag One Magnetic Cleaner T: (RoI) 057 9126968 or (NI) 0800 0443261 W: www.grantengineering. ie or www.grantni.com

avin’s HepvO waterless trap won’t lose its seal due to siphonage, evaporation, leaking or movement and because there’s no water, it won’t gurgle. The elastomeric membrane is fixed inside a rigid body, preventing the seal from becoming dislodged. HepvO stops foul air from entering the building but admits air into the pipe system, making it suitable for branch pipe ventilation. It can be installed vertically or horizontally, delivering exceptional performance where conventional traps could leave you high and dry. HepvO has been extensively tested and is resistant to common chemicals such as cleaners and detergents containing sodium hydroxide and solvents. It’s dry self-sealing valve offers a number of benefits for both the professional installer, end user and system designer. • HepvO actively eliminates negative pressure within the waste system by opening and allowing in fresh air until a state of equilibrium with atmosphere is reached. It subsequently closes to reseal the waste system and

prevent foul air release. This means that the venting of the waste system, or the inclusion of an air admittance valve in the waste system, is no longer necessary; • Unlike water seal traps, HepvO is not affected by siphonage and will therefore not allow the escape of foul air into the living space from drain or sewer; • HepvO allows discharge water to pass easily through, regardless of the volume; • It allows the placement of a greater number of appliances together on fewer discharge pipes without compromising the performance of the sanitary discharge system; • HepvO operates silently and is not subject to “gurgling” noises typically associated with siphonage and indicative of a breech in the water seal barrier; • The HepvO valve promotes hygiene, particularly where an appliance is infrequently used. HepvO differs from conventional traps, which can dry out or hold water which can become stagnant causing the emission of smells and enhancing bacterial growth; • The HepvO valve will perform

under back pressures which are 10 times greater than those experienced in a typical soil and waste system. The HepvO self-sealing waterless waste valve is suitable for use as a replacement for water traps in waste drainage and for branch pipe ventilation. HepvO is available in 32mm and 40mm with a small range of accessories - knuckle adaptors, running adaptors and tundish kit (32mm only). We offer style as well as quality, and our customer service is second to none.” In 2014, the company opened a 5,000sqft showroom at its distribution centre in Dublin, with the purpose of allowing consumers, installers, specifiers and retailers to engage with the company’s extensive product offering as part of their decision-making process. Richard said, “It was a significant decision and investment for us, but undoubtedly it has enabled us to focus more on demand creation for our products with each of our target sector customers.”

he mechanical installation at a prestigious apart-hotel complex in the heart of London has displayed all the key attributes of working with Pegler Yorkshire. Working with sub-contractor, CHC Group Ltd, based in Craigavon, Pegler Yorkshire provided assistance at every stage of the new Marlin Apartments at Westminster Bridge Road, close to Waterloo, the London Eye, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. The varied range of products offered by Pegler Yorkshire supported sustainability and building performance objectives whilst also being able to sustain a modular design system. As well as working on the design and installation aspects of the project, Pegler Yorkshire also provided the Warranty Plus guarantee that gives a 25-year guarantee. George McGuire, Pegler Yorkshire’s Area Sales Manager for Northern Ireland, said, “We have successfully worked with CHC Group in the past and we were delighted to be involved in another prestigious project with them. “We worked on this project from the initial design stages to provide value engineering solutions that incorporated our Tectite, Xpress and valves solutions. We also provided

complete training for the installation team and, for added peace of mind, the Warranty Plus guarantee.” While the heat is on for installers to meet strict deadlines, the heat-free installation method of the Pegler Yorkshire range was another of the key factors for the product range being selected by CHC Group. “Speed is a big factor,” explained Mark Rainey, Senior Mechanical Estimator at CHC Group. “Without having to worry about Hot Works permits, we were able to install a quicker, cleaner system. “We used the Xpress Carbon and Copper systems as well as Tectite for anything lower than 54mm and, as we have found in the past, these products are quick and easy to install. “Being able to combine this with all the peace of mind we get from Warranty Plus is another reason why we opt for Pegler Yorkshire. We already receive great support, but having Pegler Yorkshire complete the commissioning of the system and providing a 25-year guarantee of their work is a major plus.” T: (NI/RoI) George McGuire on 0044 (0)7912 406 101 or Billy Ritchie 0044 (0)7734 401 976 W: www.pegleryorkshire.co.uk

Brendan Coghlan (second from right) who has recently retired as Commercial and Operations Director at BSS Group pictured with (from left) Brian McAdam, Branch Manager; Jason Warnock, Business Director; and Pat Kelly, Sales Director.
FOLLOWING THE RETIREMENT OF BRENDAN COGHLAN, BSS ANNOUNCES TWO NEW APPOINTMENTS…
BSS Group takes a step forward
C
ustomer satisfaction is at the heart of new promotions at BSS Group - a leading provider of pipeline and heating solutions. BSS Group has two branches in Ireland - Belfast and Dublin - and to further consolidate the company’s leading position within the Irish industry, two key managerial roles have been filled in-house. Jason Warnock has been promoted to Business Director, while Brian McAdam has been promoted to the role of Branch Manager. The pair will work alongside Sales Director, Pat Kelly. Leaving behind a wealth of experience, Brendan Coghlan, Commercial & Operations Director, also recently retired from BSS Group. Before taking up the Business Director position, Jason held the role of Branch Manager from 2004 to 2016. Jason is now tasked with driving the business forward, growing the existing business and looking for new opportunities in the marketplace. “We’re based in Dublin, but given the buoyant market, both in Dublin and around the country, we are keen to
30 | PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE
expand the operation to offer a more seamless service. Moving forward, we also want to ensure customers are aware of the vast range of products that we stock. “We feel that there’s a huge advantage to the personal touch, so 2017 will be about reinforcing our commitment to customer service, which is something that we continually aim to improve.” BSS Group also maintains an important presence online, with much of the company’s business carried out via its website. Before his promotion to Branch Manager, Brian McAdam held the position of Key Accounts Manager at BSS Group for 14 years. New responsibilities include the day-to-day running of the branch which comprises internal sales, transport, warehousing and health and safety, to name just a few. Although his new role means he won’t be on the road as much, Brian is still responsible for maintaining business with the major contractors. “Performance-wise, 2016 was extremely positive for BSS Group. We
expect business to be even better this year and we’re actively looking at new products that will enhance our offering to customers and fit into the existing range that we provide.” Both Jason and Brian say the Dublin market is currently thriving, with lots of activity also happening around the country. The pharmaceutical sector in Cork is performing well, while the water business industry continues to provide steady work for the company. With the acquisition of Pegler & Louden in 2003, BSS Group has positioned itself very strongly in the commercial industrial market. Sectors serviced by the company include pharmaceutical, power, water treatment and petrochemical. Through a knowledgeable staff and an extensive product range, the firm has the ability to diversify and move into other sectors. Meanwhile, the emphasis is very much on maintaining existing business and keeping an eye on the marketplace to take advantage of any opportunities that may arise. AUTOMATIC AIR VENTS
AVAILABLE FROM ALTECNIC, THE CALEFFI PREMIUM QUALITY RANGE OF AAVs OFFERS UNRIVALLED EFFICIENCY WHEN IT COMES TO INSTALLATION...
Superior quality at the right price
A
ltecnic, part of the Caleffi group of companies, offers a leading range of Automatic Air Vents (AAVs) that are used in heating and air conditioning systems to continually remove air from the system without the need for manual intervention. Excessive air within a system can cause rust and pump damage to say nothing of excessive noise, reducing the accuracy of control valves and the performance of heating and cooling equipment. One of the most important functions of Caleffi AAVs is to release air as the system is being filled with water and then automatically isolating, preventing water loss and wastage from the system. Caleffi’s AAVs, including the market-leading RoboCal, are WRAS approved products. Although it is a badge of quality, WRAS approval clearly demonstrates compliance with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations or Scottish Byelaws because it is granted directly by representatives of the water suppliers and is,

“AAVs minimise the hassle from callbacks to site.”
therefore, accepted by every major water supplier. AAVs are typically installed on sealed systems and enable air to be vented with minimal hassle for the installer when commissioning or the user as part of routine maintenance. From the installer’s point of view, not only does the AAV reduce the need for manual venting while commissioning (ie filling) a new system but it also minimises the hassle from call-backs to site. Furthermore, Altecnic AAVs are available in a wide range of sizes, from 3/8” to DN150 and are easy to fit with screwed and fast-fit compression versions. AAVs are not to be confused with air separators. Separators can be fitted directly next to a boiler and they remove air by forcing it into larger bubbles that can then be removed by an AAV. The skill is to site an AAV where it will do the most good, and this is where Altecnic provides the options and solutions that make this easy for installers. As one of the pioneers in the
market, Altecnic produces AAVs that have been tried and tested in commercial and industrial applications with a long track record of success. Commenting on the range, Mark Mogey, National Sales Manager, said, “Altecnic AAVs are a high quality, easy-to-fit solution to reducing the time it takes to commission a sealed system. Additionally, they cut down on potential call-backs to site and make a system faster to service in the future. All of this is backed by Altecnic’s marketleading service and by approved, accredited products.” T: Chris Reilly, Country Manager, on (NI) 07825 393 605 or (RoI) 0044 7825 393 605 E: chris.reilly@altecnic.co.uk W: www.altecnic.co.uk

LOYALTY SCHEME
INSTALLERS PRAISE THE BENEFITS OF BAXI’S LOYALTY SCHEME ALONG WITH NEWS THAT THE ECOBLUE WARRANTY HAS BEEN EXTENDED FURTHER…
Baxi loyalty scheme Works!
J
ust over a year since it was revamped, it is clear that Baxi Works – the company’s loyalty scheme – does exactly that! Designed using feedback from installers, Baxi Works offers a wider range of benefits for loyal installers. In another boost, Baxi has extended its market-leading warranty offers in Northern Ireland on its EcoBlue range until December 31, 2017*. Once they have installed a boiler, Baxi Works installers in Northern Ireland can set up automatic, personalised service reminders for home-owners, helping to secure repeat business. At the same time, NI installers can complete free Gas Safe notifications, register warranties, and claim loyalty points in just a few simple steps. Baxi Approved Installers can also benefit from same-day engineer call-outs for in-warranty boilers. Finn Grehan, also known as ‘The Gasman Cabra’, has been a registered installer of Baxi boilers for the past 20 years. Extremely simple to install and popular with customers thanks to their efficiency, Finn installed many Baxi boilers in 2016. “The loyalty scheme is fantastic. It gives us a few bob back which we use for Christmas or birthday presents in the office. It’s very easy to use and we can always depend on excellent back-up from Baxi; everyone is happy!” Finn also offers a free five-year warranty on all Baxi products. “We very rarely have any warranty issues on Baxi boilers which is down to the quality of the product. But even if we were

to, I know that I would have a replacement Baxi product on site within two or three hours. That’s the level of care we receive from Baxi and it allows us to ensure our customers are happy.” The same positive response is being found with installers in Northern Ireland. David Harper, of Ballygowanbased David Harper Plumbing & Heating, said, “You can quickly scan in the barcode with your smartphone and set up the warranty and service reminders. It’s quick and simple to use and reflects a professional service for my business. “I’ve only been installing Baxi boilers for about six months and I’m very impressed with them. Some boilers have become over-complicated, but Baxi’s are simple to install and service. With Baxi Works, I see the loyalty points as an added extra. The most important thing is quality, and Baxi has that in abundance.” In addition to these benefits, registered installers also have access to the Baxi Works website, which includes an exclusive error code look-up function complete with installer

The package of benefits also brings together a number of online initiatives, including the ability for consumers to review an installer on the Baxi website, and the option for the installer to hide their details if their diary is busy or they are away from the business. The Baxi Works website also includes a new dedicated discussion forum where members can share hints, tips and advice with fellow installers, and an information hub where members can order and download marketing collateral including literature and van livery. C&F QUADRANT AND JOHN LYNN P&H LTD COMPLETE THE FIRST INSTALLATION IN NORTHERN IRELAND OF THE NEW UNICAL XC-K OIL CONDENSING BOILER…
A first for Unical in Northern Ireland
T
he first installation of the new Unical XC-K oil condensing boiler in Northern Ireland has been successfully completed. The impressive new boiler was supplied by C&F Quadrant and installed by John Lynn Plumbing & Heating Ltd to replace a system at Mid-Ulster District Council’s offices in Cookstown that was around 40 years old. “Energy efficiency was the key factor in this project and the Unical XC-K ticked all the right boxes,” explained Damian Lynn of the Cookstown based contractors. “We have worked closely with C&F Quadrant in the past and we have always found them to be a knowledgeable and reliable supplier. “This was the first time I’ve ever installed a Unical boiler and I was very impressed. I will happily install them in future.” With energy efficiency so central to the success of the project, the Unical XC-K oil condensing boiler proved the perfect choice. The project had to meet the requirements of the ErP regulations and with Unical’s certified efficiency of 109% and a four-star CE efficiency class rating (according to according to 92/42/CE Directive), it easily met this prerequisite. As a large water content, stainless steel, condensing boiler, Unical XC-K is available in 12 different models (from 124 to 2160 kw) and is an excellent choice when, for installation reasons, it is necessary to use a large water content condensing boiler. The metals used for the boiler are of very high quality, with the outer shell manufactured using high-resistance carbon steel. The tube bundle is selfcleaning, thanks to the natural washout that the condensate produces for gravity. The Unical offers very high saving and seasonal efficiency, thanks to the adoption of fan-assisted modulating burners and to the hydraulic connection, prearranged for two return connections

(high/low temperature). While this is the first oil installation in Northern Ireland, the Unical range is already proven across Europe in some of the harshest environments, including Siberia. C&F Quadrant has an exclusive distribution agreement with Unical to distribute the leading Italian manufacturer’s range of commercial boilers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Michael Clarke, C&F Quadrant, commented, “Unical is a tried and trusted name and we are delighted to see the first installation of the Unical XC-K oil condensing boiler be completed so successfully. There’s a lot of interest in this boiler and we are confident we will

O
ver 50 installers attended the recently held course on Carbon Monoxide in Metac’s training centre in Mountrath, Co Laois. Speakers on the day included Eamonn Smyth, Advisor in the Building Standards Section at the Department of Environment, Community & Local Government; Sean McGinley, Safety Manager at RGII; George Tracey, Fire Officer and MD at The Soot Doctor Ltd; Tom Meehan, Technical Sales Manager Ireland at Ei Electronics; Liam Doyle, Chairman, RGII; and Charlie O’Neill, Heating Engineer Supplies. OFTEC Ireland’s representative, Sean McBride, was on hand during the day to explain the purpose of the event. “We want to ensure that our technicians are equipped with the appropriate training to deal with a CO incident in the correct and safest way. We all know that it only takes two or three minutes for CO to kill us. Our technicians need to be aware of the signs to watch out for and they also need to ensure they’re wearing their own personal CO alarms. Too many technicians are neglecting to wear them; so we really need
40 | PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE
to underline their importance.” As an industry, we are far too complacent when it comes to CO awareness, says Sean. “As an organisation, what we don’t want is for a family member to call us after a fatality and ask us why the technician wasn’t wearing a CO alarm or why he wasn’t trained in CO safety.” Local authorities are already seeing the benefit of using registered technicians and understand the benefits, and protection, that control documents offer. Several local authorities now specify OFTEC registered technicians for oil and stove installation and service work. OFTEC has also been working to gain Government recognition for oil and now solid fuel technicians for several years, and it looks like there may be light at the end of the tunnel. Eamonn Smyth from the Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government, who attended and spoke at the CPD event has, Sean says, been receptive to the idea of pushing forward and recommending competent persons through local councils.
“We want to ensure that our technicians are equipped with the appropriate training to deal with a CO incident in the correct and safest way.”
Sean said, “The problem we face at the moment is getting the numbers up. It’s a chicken and egg scenario. I believe that the Department of the Environment is trying to assist us but without significant numbers on our registration scheme they have a problem recommending OFTEC technicians in case there is not the countrywide coverage. “We know there are sufficient technicians available who have completed the training and we need them to register. “If you have a valid solid fuel qualification contact us now for free registration and Sean and the team at OFTEC will continue to push hard to make sure OFTEC registered technicians are recognised as competent persons to install and service oil and solid fuelled appliances across Ireland.” OFTEC T: (ROI) 01 864 5771 (NI) 048 91 862 916 W: www.oftec.org E: enquiries@oftec.org METAC T: 00353 (0) 57 875 6540 W: www.metac.ie E: info@metac.ie

THE VISION - HOW IT ALL STARTED
M
Thumbs up for MacBlair’s new corporate branding A ‘HERE TO HELP’ POLICY HAS UNIFIED THIS SUCCESSFUL COMPANY UNDER ONE NAME…
42 | PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE
acnaughton Blair has unveiled a new look, but the process has been about so much more than just new signage and uniforms – as customers to the company’s MacBlair Plumbing branches and Watershed Bathrooms and Tiles showrooms have been finding out. The introduction of the striking new blue and yellow brand has been rolled out over a number of months across all the company’s eight plumbing branches in Northern Ireland alongside a new thumbs-up and ‘Here To Help’ message. Peter Kearney, CEO of Macnaughton Blair, explained, “Our biggest challenge has always been communicating to our customers the extent of our branch network and the many benefits that this offers. “We have grown quite rapidly through acquisition and always had a policy of maintaining local goodwill by retaining the name of the acquired business. However, as we have grown, that

has made the job of promoting the company as a whole a lot more complex. “Unifying under the MacBlair brand means we are now able to effectively communicate our many strengths and, ultimately, our customers will be the real beneficiaries.” The rebranding process has helped highlight the plumbing and heating services available at eight of the company’s branches and also the seven Watershed Bathrooms and Tiles Showrooms. Both now sit alongside the 15 builders’ merchants and other specialist services that include MacBlair Civils and MacBlair Hire. The launch of the new branding is the final piece in a complex puzzle that
has included an upgrade of all the company’s branches as well as an extensive programme of staff training. Brian McAuley, Merchanting Director, said, “Once we decided to rebrand all our branches under one name, we undertook an assessment of the business to identify our strengths and weaknesses. The focus was on ‘What is MacBlair?’ and this journey helped highlight the many positives that we offer. These are now being communicated more effectively to our customers.” While the changes have clearly made the company more DIY friendly, it has not been at the expense of trade customers. The opposite is, in fact, true. Opening hours have also been

adjusted to meet trade demand, with all branches opening from at least 7.30am, with three of the larger branches (Antrim, Duncrue and Boucher) now opening from 7am. Extended Saturday opening hours have also been introduced. A new-look website showcases the company’s extensive product range and services. Peter concluded, “Every member of staff took part in customer training under our ‘Here to Help’ programme where we set out the expectations of the service we want to provide. What this process has showed us is the real passion, experience and knowledge that our colleagues demonstrate across all our branches, and we have no doubt our customers will respond to this.” www.macblair.com

Natural success of MacBlair Plumbing
M
acBlair Plumbing is one of a number of specialist services and product offerings that are being showcased under the company’s new branding. Once seen as an added extra, this aspect of the company has grown organically but strongly over the years. As a result, it has now been placed alongside MacBlair Civils, MacBlair Hire and Watershed as notable subbrands to the main MacBlair brand. There are eight MacBlair Plumbing centres implanted in MacBlair branches – Antrim, Bangor, Belfast Boucher, Belfast Duncrue, Coleraine, Cookstown, Eglinton and Larne. Of these, MacBlair Coleraine (formerly McCandless Plumbing & Heating) has its own standalone facilities.

“Our plumbing services have simply grown organically to meet the demand in each local area,” explained Brian McAuley, Mechanting Director. “MacBlair Plumbing Coleraine is a good example of our success and the same can be said at Duncrue, Eglinton and Bangor. But all our branches are growing organically. It is all part of the added value we want to offer our customers.” As with all the products on offer at MacBlair Plumbing , the service is backed by a strong stock from market-leading manufacturers. This diverse product range is required as MacBlair Plumbing attracts a varied customer base, ranging from DIYers and self-builders through to plumbing contractors of all sizes.

With a growing number of contractors from right across Northern Ireland travelling to work in the North Down area, the clear recognition that the branch – which was formerly known as Bangor Supply Co – is part of the MacBlair network has led to a boost in trade. INDUSTRY NEWS
AN EXTRA 11,800 PLUMBERS ARE NEEDED TO FUEL THE FAST-GROWING CONSTRUCTION SECTOR UP TO 2020…
Calling all plumbers
A
new report commissioned by the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) and carried out by DKM consultants in conjunction with SOLAS indicates that construction activity can sustain an additional 112,000 jobs up to 2020, with an estimated €17.8billion worth of projects in the pipeline in 2017. The ‘Demand for Skills in Construction to 2020’ report comes in the wake of a new website (www. cifjobs.ie) launched by the CIF. The new jobs portal is targeted at people who left Ireland during the recession and who may be thinking about coming back home in light of the upturn in the construction sector. Demand for different professions and trades for the next three years has also been identified in the new DKM report. Approximately 11,800 plumbers, 15,200 electricians and 30,800 carpenters and joiners are needed up to 2020. “We are asking Irish people with construction experience who have left Ireland to consider returning to take up a role in construction,” Director General of the CIF, Tom Parlon, said. “Over the next three years, this report estimates that we will need 112,000 additional workers in construction to deliver on the ambitious targets set out in the
52 | PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE
Government’s €43billion Capital Programme, the Rebuilding Ireland Strategy and in meeting the increasing demand from Foreign Direct Investment companies for specialist buildings.” The report also refers to the number of apprentices that are needed to sustain activity in the sector. In 2015, the number of Solas apprentice registrations for plumbers totalled 290; in 2006, 1,500 plumbing apprentices were registered. Commenting on the lack of apprenticeships in the sector, Mr Parlon said efforts to increase numbers are ongoing. “We will continue to work with the Government and its agencies such as SOLAS and the Education and Training Boards to deliver skilled employees and apprentices through innovative initiatives. Critical to this will be getting the message to young people and those who have emigrated that there is a significant number of quality careers across all the trades and functions in construction companies.” In 2015 the value of turnover in the construction industry was around €13
billion, representing 6.2% of economic activity (GNP), down from almost onequarter of the economy at the height of the last boom. There were 136,900 persons directly employed in Q2 2016, 6.8% of the total employed workforce. The severity of the construction recession saw numbers working in construction decline by almost 180,000 by Q1 2013 to just 35% of the numbers employed at the peak in 2007. Construction recorded the fastest rate of employment growth in the period since, gaining 39,200 jobs at a rate of around 1,000 per month. RENEWABLES NORTHERN IRELAND
RHI
Is it the end PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE TALKS TO ACTION RENEWABLES MANAGING DIRECTOR, MICHAEL DORAN, TO FIND OUT IF THE RHI SCANDAL HAS SOUNDED THE DEATH KNELL FOR THE SECTOR…
T
Michael Doran, Action Renewables Director, pictured with Mary Rossiter, Vayu, is hoping the renewables sector in Northern Ireland can weather the storm of RHI.
he renewables industry in Northern Ireland may have been hit hard by the fall-out from the RHI scandal, but the strength of the technology and skills means it can recover in the long-term, according to Michael Doran, Managing Director of Action Renewables. While the term renewables has become challenging within political circles, Michael believes that, sooner, rather than later, the focus will have to return to the sector. In the meantime, his concern is that the industry faces a difficult two years. “RHI has caused significant reputational damage to the renewables industry in Northern Ireland. If you look at the all the manifestos from the main political parties you won’t see one mention of renewables or climate change. The Department has been under so much pressure because of RHI that there isn’t a policy on renewables or climate change,
RENEWABLES NORTHERN IRELAND
of the road for renewables? and that has been the case for over a year now. “Also, entrants to the ROCs scheme in Northern Ireland are set to finish in March, we don’t have a feed-in tariff and there is no longer RHI. As it stands, there is nothing new coming forward for the industry from Government. “Unfortunately, most people don’t have a good opinion of renewables. It’s been packaged as a rip off of the public purse. As a result, our need to move away from our reliance of fossil fuels has been lost.” Despite the doom and gloom, Michael believes there are still some positives within the industry. As he points out, the many negatives of RHI are on the way the system was run, not on the technology itself. “The target for RHI was to get us from 2.8% to 10% of renewable heat generation by 2020. It was hitting around 7%, so it was well on its way to meeting that target,” Michael explained. “We are asking questions about whether the 2020 target has now been abandoned. It is clear that the technology is not at fault, but the delivery of RHI.” There are concerns about the loss of skills, experience and the renewables supply chain but Michael feels that the industry has met pressures like this in the past and can do so again. “The plumbing and heating industry has done well with renewables in Northern Ireland
but you are going to see a hiatus in the next two years. That is going to affect our skills base and our supply chain, and we are unlikely to see many new companies or new innovations come into the sector. “But much like the construction industry has had to do, renewables companies in Northern Ireland may have to look to the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain for work until we come through what is undoubtedly a difficult time. “There will be opportunities in the Republic of Ireland in 2018 through their Renewable Heat Incentive scheme, while renewables are still very much in demand in Great Britain. Even in Northern Ireland, there will still be a demand for servicing wood pellet boilers, for example.” The growing success of different renewable technologies is also set to play its part in the re-emergence of the industry in years to come. “Look at solar PV. Its capabilities are almost on parity with how we are generating electricity at the moment. Hydrogen production plants are another area where we expect to see growth, while there is also growth in both small scale and large scale electricity storage, so there are opportunities out there. “From our perspective, Action Renewables is opening new offices in Dublin, where we will focus on developing new work
and services in the Republic of Ireland. We’re also involved with ROCs trading in Great Britain. We feel we need to keep going and search out new opportunities so that we are prepared for when renewables return properly in Northern Ireland.” He added, “I think it will be about two years before that happens. The technology is moving at such a pace that we may not need such a strong incentive package
“When the time is right, we will have the opportunity to start again from a blank page and restart with objectives that are sensible and that will work. That will be a great way forward” for renewables by then. What we will definitely need, however, is a vision for our long-term energy supply and how we get past our over-reliance on fossil fuels. “The RHI issues are a major speed bump on the road, but I don’t see this as the end of the road for renewables. When the time is right, we will have the opportunity to begin again from a blank page and restart with objectives that are sensible and that will work. That will be a great way forward.” T: Action Renewables on (NI) 028 9072 7760 or (RoI) 048 9072 7760 E: info@actionrenewables.co.uk W: www.actionrenewables.co.uk

REGULATIONS
THE CER HAS EXTENDED THE REGISTERED GAS INSTALLER SCHEME TO INCLUDE NONDOMESTIC GAS WORKS...
CER widens scope of Registered Gas Installer Scheme
I
n a move that is intended to provide installers with a mechanism to demonstrate that they’re competent and trained, the CER is to progress a new regulation that will ensure non-domestic gas works can only be legally carried out by a non-domestic Registered Gas Installer (RGI). This new regulation will improve public safety and give confidence to consumers that the installers are competent, insured and subject to inspection to ensure their work is undertaken to the required standards. There will be a cost associated with the introduction of the scheme like there is on the domestic regulatory scheme. However, such costs will be regulated by the CER. According to the CER, the definition of non-domestic gas works is all works relating to natural gas and LPG installations in commercial and public access buildings at maximum operating pressures not exceeding 5 bar and industrial gas installations at maximum operating pressures not exceeding 0.5 bar, from the point of delivery up to and including the appliance(s) in non-domestic premises. This includes all

works related to the installation, removal, repair, servicing, maintenance or replacement (or any combination of the foregoing) of gas fittings covered by I.S. 8201. This definition was decided upon by the CER after public consultation and discussions with industry stakeholders. The CER also identified a number of exemptions from the definition of non-domestic gas works; these will be kept under continuous review when the regulatory scheme becomes operational. The CER is to create four registration categories of installer in the non-domestic scheme for those working in the following areas: • Gas pipework • Heating appliances and boilers • Catering and laundry • Power generation The next step will involve the CER engaging with the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment and publishing this information note to update stakeholders on the steps leading to the implementation of the nondomestic regulatory scheme. The CER will also provide an expected timeframe for the

introduction of the scheme. A media plan to promote public and industry awareness of the new regulatory scheme will also be introduced in due course. The steps that have been, or will be, taken by the CER are as follows: • The creation of a working group and subcommittees to engage with industry stakeholders on appropriate entry requirements and competency assessment; • The development of a core training qualification, with separate modules for each installer category and a five-year assessment methodology; • The development of an inspection and assessment program; • The creation of a non-domestic gas works certification system; • The extension of the CER’s remit to include regulation of non-domestic gas works by progressing the new regulation in consultation with the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment as required by Section 9(G) under the Electricity Regulation Act 1999, as amended. with the latest weather and load compensation technologies. These intelligent features give a control the ability to adjust the boiler’s performance in line with the room temperature and local weather conditions, meaning they can boost the efficiency of a system (by up to 4%, according to the ERP directive). There are a variety of these highly-advanced controls available to suit the needs of all home-owners. Internetconnected devices, such as the Worcester Wave, allow those with busy lifestyles to switch their heating systems at the touch of a button from anywhere in the world. Others, like the Greenstar Comfort range, provide the same ‘smart’ performance for those with more stable routines. Of course, the efficiency benefits of a top boiler and control can be lost if the system itself is not kept in tip-top condition from one year to the next. Research has proved that a well-protected heating system can significantly
reduce gas consumption by up to 6%, so it is vital to ensure that the water, which will circulate through the boiler is clean and stays clean. In this light, a magnetic system filter will go a long way to helping this cause. The unique design of Worcester’s Greenstar System Filter gives it a host of benefits that should make it as attractive to installers as it is to their customers. Available in 22mm and 28mm variants and developed with the help of over 200 heating engineers, our latest accessory has been engineered to be installed anywhere along the return circulation pipework between the last radiator and the boiler. This flexibility, added to the accessory’s sleek appearance, allows for a neater finish within the home. MACERATORS
FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS TO MAKE THE ADDITION OF AN EN SUITE BATHROOM A SIMPLE PROCESS…
Saniflo - a step-by-step installation guide The Sanislim.
A
typical scenario for the installation of a Saniflo macerator is the addition of an en suite bathroom or a cloakroom in a domestic property. When converting spaces, such as lofts, basements and cupboards, to new bathrooms it is often the case that the existing drainage infrastructure isn’t within the proximity of the conversion. In this case, a Saniflo macerator can be installed with small bore pipework to discharge the waste to the nearest soil stack. A range of Saniflo macerators can be chosen depending on the job in hand. A typical en suite will require a unit that can take waste from a WC, a basin and a shower. The Sanislim is a popular model that can handle waste from multiple appliances - including the highest output showers. The following is a step-by-step that can be followed when fitting the majority of domestic macerators.
www.plumbingmag.com
STEP-BY-STEP: 1 Unpack the box, layout all individual items and instructions and check all items are present. 2 Fit the elbowed, non-return valve on to the top of the macerator. 3 Attach the hose clips, flexi-pipe and pan gasket on to the Saniflo and cable tie them. 4 Using an axe saw, cut the top of the plastic pipe on the top of the unit to expose the hole for connection to the basin. 5 Place the unit behind the toilet – or behind a de-mountable wall if the unit is to be obscured from view. Fasten the hose clip to the pan spigot. 6 Plumb the basin waste into the macerator unit. 7 Connect the small bore, discharge pipework from the macerator to the soil stack, ensuring there is a sufficient fall to the soil stack after the initial rise. 8 Connect the electrics to an unswitched fuse spur*. 9 Manually and visually check all the wastewater inlet connections and joints, including the pan

gasket connection 10 Turn on the water and electrical supply to the macerator and test it by throwing sheets of toilet paper into the bowl to ensure it is pumped away. 11 Run the tap while checking all connections for water tightness. The macerator should pump away the washbasin waste. Reflush the toilet. 12 Demonstrate the system to the customer, highlighting correct usage, and hand over the relevant stickers and guarantee card. A Sanialarm may also be fitted to the Sanislim pump. This has a level pressure switch that triggers an alarm fixed on the top of the Sanislim if the volume of water exceeds the maximum allowed level. The alarm emits a continuous warning sound, until it is switched off and the problem is rectified. T: (RoI/NI) 00353 (0)46 9733077 W: www.saniflo.ie *electrics to be tested by competent electrician

STUART MCWHINNIE, ENGINEERING MANAGER OF THE FIREBIRD HEATING GROUP, LOOKS AT THE HISTORY BEHIND BLUE FLAME TECHNOLOGY AND HOW IT IS BEING UTILISED TO NOT ONLY MEET, BUT EXCEED, THE NEW LEGISLATIVE REQUIREMENTS OF THE ENERGY RELATED PRODUCTS (ERP) AND ECODESIGN DIRECTIVES... Firebird Heating’s Blue Supreme uses tried and tested blue flame technology.
Blue flame technology the way forward!
A
ny major shake-up to an industry is usually brought about by a significant change in legislation. This is no different for the heating industry, where the greatest impact is still to be felt with the second phase of the Ecodesign Directive (EU813/2013) not far away. New requirements on flue gas emissions state that, from September 2018, harmful NOx emissions from domestic oil boilers must not exceed 120mg/ kWh. Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions is the general term that relates to the release of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and the chemically related colourless gas Nitrogen Monoxide (NO). These gases are released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned. The high temperatures produced during the combustion process result in high levels of Nitrous Oxides being liberated, which medical evidence suggests can lead to health problems when found in excessive concentrations. As well as being responsible for the destruction of vegetation, these gases are known to be a major contributor in the formation of acid rain, due to their water solubility. When in high concentrations, these potentially harmful by-products of the combustion process are
64 | PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE
thought to contribute significantly to global pollution. The limit on NOx emissions produced by oil boilers is outlined in the Ecodesign Directive. This legislation governs the design and performance of energy-using products to reduce the amount of energy consumed and the subsequent impact on the environment. The Ecodesign Framework Directive is a European initiative put in place to address climate. The initiative forms part of Europe’s commitment to transform itself into a high energy-efficient, low carbon economy and achieve its 20-20-20 target to lower carbon emissions by 20%, increase energy efficiency by 20% and increase the share of renewable energies by 20% by 2020.
HISTORY A common assumption is that Blue Flame technology has only been developed in response to these pending changes in legislation, when in fact it has been used throughout Europe for over 30 years. It is widely understood that the principle is based on knowledge taken from the space industry. The first Blue Flame burners used by Firebird were developed by German manufacturer, MHG Heiztechnik GmbH. Firebird

has worked in partnership with MHG for many years and together developed the first mainstream Blue Flame oil condensing boiler - the Blue Supreme Range - in Ireland, which has been available for over three years. Utilising the revolutionary third generation MHG blue flame burner, application figures from the field have shown NOx levels produced to be as low as 65mg/kWh - nearly half the 120mg/kWh limit for 2018. The burner is also fitted with the latest Siemens digital control box providing full diagnostic information to the maintenance engineer. CASE STUDY
THE ROS MÓR DEVELOPMENT IN BALLYNEETY, CO LIMERICK HAS ACHIEVED PART L COMPLIANCE THROUGH THE UTILISATION OF A GAS BOILER AND SOLAR THERMAL RENEWABLE SOLUTION...
Achieving Part L compliance with natural gas
N
atural gas with a solar thermal solution has satisfied Part L compliance in Co Limerick by combining a condensing gas boiler with a solar enhanced hot water and heating system. Installed using traditional construction and plumbing methods means the on-site plumber can install the system without having to employ the services of any third party specialist fitters. A 91.0% efficient gas-fired condensing boiler from Glowworm (supplied by C&F Quadrant Ltd) with standard size radiators was used for the development. The heating system was installed using traditional elements so there was no need for the use of expensive aluminium radiators. Time and temperature zone controls have been achieved by a simple time-clock and thermostats within the system. This, in conjunction with a 300-litre, stainless steel water cylinder, makes this solution one of the most economical systems on the market. The fan-assisted SmartRad in a common area provides free solar thermal energy; this reduces the space heating load while at the same time contributing to the renewable thermal heat requirement. A natural gas fire in the living room is considered a secondary heating system. The renewable energy contribution is rated as 10 kWh thermal renewable energy per m2/ year. At Ros Mór, the houses in this development have varying
68 | PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE
orientations. For properties facing south and south-east/ west, three flat plate collectors are required. For those facing east/west, four flat plate collectors are required. Ros Mór easily complies with the thermal renewable energy contribution requirement of 10 kW/h per m2 per year with a thermal equivalent of 18.81 kWh per metre squared per year. To meet the performance coefficients/carbon performance coefficient (CPC) <0.46 energy performance coefficient (EPC) <0.4, natural gas is used as the primary heating system combined with other renewable technologies. This comfortably meets Part L Building requirements for EPC <0.4 and CPC <0.46 with 0.357 for CPC and 0.389 for EPC. Unique selling points for the home-owner include: • Running costs – this system contributes up to 70% of all hot water requirements, meaning the running costs for the homeowner are considerably less than that of older more traditional space heating hot water installations. • User-friendliness and aesthetics – the control panel has two simple settings allowing the home-owners to easily select their chosen heating controls for the specific time of year. Just like a traditional gas boiler, the elements of the NuTech solution installed in the house are unobtrusive and compact.
“The plumber can install the system without having to employ the services of any third party specialist fitters.”
A 91.0% efficient gas-fired condensing boiler from Glow-worm (supplied by C&F Quadrant Ltd) with standard size radiators was used for the development.
• Life cycle and maintenance – servicing a gas boiler is a simple process which is performed on an annual basis by one of the many 2,500 Registered Gas Installers (RGIs) around Ireland, traditionally ensuring a prolonged life cycle of 20-25 years. UNDERFLOOR HEATING
MAKE THE MOST OF UFH BY COMBINING IT WITH THE SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN SCREED FROM RTU…
Energy efficient screed for underfloor heating
U
sing Ultraflo® liquid floor screed with underfloor heating systems, means the time taken to increase room air temperature can be much less than using traditional methods such as sand:cement screed. RTU first introduced Ultraflo® liquid floor screed into the Irish market nearly 10 years ago, but this technology has been proven to be successful throughout Europe for over 25 years. Ultraflo® is a calcium sulphate, hemihydrate liquid floor screed designed to comply with BS EN 13813: 2002. Being a pump applied, non-cement based material it can be installed up to 10 times faster than traditional floor screeds due to its virtually self-levelling and selfcompacting qualities. It also has the advantage of allowing light traffic after 24 hours, which is aided by the much thinner screed depth required, a benefit for any project. With minimal drying shrinkage, and a reduced risk of cracking, the need for movement joints are also reduced.
Ultraflo® fully encapsulates underfloor heating pipes.
SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN The University of Ulster conducted a study comparing the heat responsiveness of RTU Ultraflo® liquid floor screed with traditional sand: cement screed and the results were quite outstanding. Ultraflo® liquid screed is shown to have a much faster heat responsiveness with underfloor heating than sand: cement screed, with the room air temperature increasing by 10°C within 3 hours as opposed to 9-and-a-half hours it took for traditional sand: cement screed. Benefits of Ultraflo® include: • Minimal drying shrinkage, less than < 0.02% - which is at least 3 times less than cement based screeds. • Ultraflo® has excellent thermal conductivity - due to the selfcompacting nature it can fully encapsulate the underfloor heating pipes allowing no air pockets to form. • Movement joints need only be considered where the floor area exceeds 1000m2 or where the

floor becomes elongated and an aspect ratio of 1:6 is exceeded. Movement joints should also be considered across doorways and when used with underfloor heating systems, movement joints should be considered between different heating zones. • Ultraflo® can be force dried after 7 days to help the drying process when used over underfloor heating pipes. – not subject to cracking or • As Ultraflo® is not a cement based product it does not require a 28-day hydration period and thus can be force dried after 7 days having no detrimental effect on the floor such as cracking found in cement based products. • Ultraflo® can be installed with improved speed of up to 10 times faster compared with traditional sand:cement screed.

HYDRONIC UNDERFLOOR HEATING ISN’T JUST FOR NEW BUILDS. SEAN LEONARD, REGIONAL SALES MANAGER AT MYSON EXPLAINS HOW TECHNOLOGY HAS OPENED UP NEW POSSIBILITIES IN THE SECTOR...
Underfloor heating - more solutions than ever before

W
e can now site hydronic underfloor technology almost anywhere, on upper floors and in existing properties, as well as in new builds. However, underfloor isn’t only used in isolation. Around 30% of the project enquiries that we receive involve the use of underfloor heating in combination with other technologies such as radiators. It has become very commonplace to install underfloor on the ground floor while radiators are often chosen for the upper floors. Underfloor heating allows the end-user to use ready sourced single room packs which provide the installer with everything they need to install a screed floor hydronic underfloor system in one purchase. This is a cost effective and simple solution to getting a single room equipped with underfloor and is also proving popular for extensions and conservatories. However, new build is certainly not losing any ground as developers are starting to consider underfloor more frequently as a routine option. Underfloor heating is easier to install in solid or screeded floors which are mostly found on the ground floor, often in new build properties. Hydronic pipe is laid in a looped pattern on insulation above damp proof and protective

layers which cover the sub base. The pipework is anchored using a suitable anchorage system such as Myson’s Tackernail fixing system before a screed is laid over the pipework to complete the installation. We also have an option for the floating floor which has a low thermal mass and a swift response time to changes in temperature. Here, the hydronic pipework is laid in an aluminium diffusion plate within grooved extruded polystyrene panels, with the grooves spaced at 200mm intervals and pre-grooved turning channels for the pipework. Retrofitting hydronic underfloor heating is now much easier thanks to a thin 18mm thick Microboard which carries the hydronic pipe, such as Myson’s PexCellent pipe. Some of the biggest technological advances over the past few years have been in the efficiency
of pumps and in advanced controls, such as Wi-Fi and Touch controls. Myson’s Touch 2 Wi-Fi controlled thermostat includes geo location, smart start technology and 24/7 programming. It is now far more possible to install underfloor heating on upper floors, but not everyone will want that, so there is a good chance that underfloor heating will be part of a total solution for many customers. It is wise to source your other heating products as well as your underfloor heating system from a manufacturer which provides and understands other forms of heat emitter and how they can work successfully with underfloor. UNDERFLOOR HEATING
A RELATIVELY NEW NAME IN UFH IS GROWING AT A FAST PACE ACROSS IRELAND…
Solfex turns the heat up on underfloor
T
he growing success of the Solfex underfloor heating range is down to the quality and innovation of the product range. The high-quality range not only includes water-based underfloor heating but electrical heating systems and the hugely popular, patented overboard Warmboard system. “Our solutions provide flexibility, and that is one of the key reasons they are so popular,” explained Ben Perris, Sales Director, SBS (Sustainable Building Solutions) incorporating Solfex Energy Systems. “We have a selection of systems to suit all scenarios, including residential and commercial sectors and for both existing and

new build projects. They also work with suspended floors, floating floors, low profile over floor and screed applications. “All our systems can be connected to modern thermostats that can control the whole property or individual zones and can also be controlled from your phone using our App. We also provide a complete design service to ensure you make the most out of our range. We feel this is a fundamental part of our service and something that is essential for installers.” The popularity of the Solfex range is reflected in the growing success of the patented WARM-BOARD. It utilises a 15mm or an 18mm high density dry
screed board which acts as a heat conducting surface transferring the heat from the pipes to the heated floor above. With its low build up height and ease of installation WARM-BOARD is ideal for most underfloor heating scenarios and is suitable for all floor coverings. Solfex underfloor heating products are available at PTS branches in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. UNDERFLOOR HEATING
JORIS SMET, DIRECTOR, SMET BUILDING PRODUCTS OFFERS SOME ADVICE AND INFORMATION ON LAYING SCREED FOR UNDERFLOOR HEATING SYSTEMS…
Trouble-free screed laying in combination with UFH systems
T
he design and installation of screeds are governed by a series of standards which must be adhered to ensure trouble-free screed laying. These standards include BS EN 13813 – ‘Screed material and floor screeds - Screed material – Properties and requirements’; BS 8204-1 – ‘Screeds, bases and in-situ floorings. Concrete bases and cementitious levelling screeds to receive floorings – Code of Practice’; BS 8204-7 – ‘Screeds, bases and in-situ floorings. Pumpable self-smoothing screeds – Code of Practice’; and DIN 18560 – ‘Floor screeds in Building Construction’. While screed can be installed using three main methods - bonded, unbonded and floating (heated or unheated) screed construction - the specification will vary depending on the requirement for its load bearing capacity, durability, surface-levelling requirements, final floor covering, time-frame and environmental impact. Heated levelling screeds are generally laid in conjunction with proprietary UFH systems as floating screeds over thermal insulation, with the heating pipes secured in position following the manufacturer’s instructions. Cementitious levelling screeds
should be laid at the thicknesses recommended in BS 8204 Part 1, 6.4.3c - 75mm minimum or 65mm for domestic applications - unless otherwise specified by the UFH system manufacturer. Part 7, applicable to cementitious and calcium sulphate based self-smoothing heated screed constructions, states the thickness of the screed in section 6.4, which is 40mm minimum for commercial and 35mm minimum for domestic applications. Care should be taken to ensure a minimum cover over the heating pipes of 25mm for a calcium sulphate based screed or 15 mm for a cement based screed. Historically, floor screed failures have resulted from the interaction of heated screed with their final covering. The failure to check on moisture and the consequent installation of coverings on an overly wet screed has serious implications for the durability and longevity of the floor. The maximum permissible residual moisture (measured using a CM tester) is 2% for cementitious screeds and 0.5% for calcium sulphate screeds. However, it’s inevitable that the lengthy drying times required for traditional screeds are frequently at odds with
tight construction programmes and deadlines. Depending on their coat thickness, standard cementitious screeds need between four and ten weeks to achieve the prescribed 2% CM moisture content. The drying process may be accelerated through the use of specially designed binder mixes or Rapid-Set Systems suitable for the production of cement screeds. Available from SMET, these Rapid-Set Systems include products such as Rapidur B5 rapid-set screed binder and Rapidur FE 678 self-levelling screed (a ready-to-use dry mix), which produce screed floors suitable for use with UFH systems with dramatically reduced drying times, allowing early final floorcovering. Indeed, the use of these new products means that tiles may be installed in as little as 24 hours (Sopro Rapidur FE 678) or three days (Sopro Rapidur B5). This has the result of speeding up the entire screed-laying process, allowing quick access to follow-on trades. If you are a flooring contractor and wish to discuss these ‘next generation’ solutions or you have a job to lay in combination with UFH, fast-track or otherwise, contact the screed specialists at SMET.

DEALING WITH WATER DAMAGE CLAIMS ON A DAILY BASIS, PROPERTY CLAIMS LOSS ASSESSORS (PCLA) ADVISES PLUMBERS ON HOW TO DEFEND LEGAL CLAIMS AGAINST THEM…
Plumber protection
A
ccording to the firm, if a house is new or has been replumbed, PCLA is being advised by insurance companies that they may take a legal recovery action against the plumber in the case of a water damage claim caused by a leaking pipe. The statute of limitations is a time limit which outlines the length of time whereby insurance companies are ‘statute barred’ from claiming against plumbers; in property, it is six years. PCLA advises plumbing companies to be limited rather than a sole trader (however further legal and accounting advice will be necessary). PCLA carries out a lot of court work and recommends that plumbers keep a good diary. Under your appointments list, the company advises as below:
• Ensure you have the correct contact details and address for the client. • Fully describe all works you were asked to carry out. • Keep a record of all tests, eg did you pressure test the pipe/ installation and how long did the test last once the job was complete? • PCLA has seen numerous situations where people throw their bags into an attic/hotpress area, which can cause leaks. Keep a note of attic and hot press contents if working in these areas. • Keep a record of payment as it is a client’s acknowledgement of satisfaction. PCLA advises and protects plumbers who are part of its referral network. Plumbers who refer work to PCLA will also receive a referral fee.

Pressure Reducing Valves dynamic vs static CONFUSED BY DYNAMIC AND STATIC PRVS? GARY PERRY, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, EXPLAINS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO AND LOOKS AT THE OPERATING PRINCIPLES BEHIND PRVs...
P
ressure Reducing Valves (PRVs) are a frequently misunderstood product. Their operating principle is simple enough; they limit the incoming pressure from a mains supply or a boosted supply within a building. Their purpose is equally obvious – limiting high-pressure water that can seriously damage components in a heating and potable water system which can lead to damage or even burst pipes and seals. So a PRV reduces the pressure to a required value, but what frequently causes confusion is the difference between dynamic and static pressure. Static pressure is the pressure in a body of water when that water is at rest. Static pressure control is therefore the maintenance of a set pressure within a system when there is no demand, i.e. no flow. This is particularly useful for single point of use outlets, especially where protection is required due to low pressure rating of, for example, washing machines and showers. Dynamic pressure, in comparison, is the static pressure of the body of water but it also includes the momentum of the fluid in motion. Therefore, dynamic pressure control is the maintenance of a set pressure within a system when the water is moving. The key difference is that a dynamic PRV will only control the pressure when water is moving. If there is no demand the pressure can creep up without regulation. Static control on the other hand will keep pressure constant even when downstream demand increases.
80 | PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE
HOW PRVS WORK In theory, the PRV operating principle is simple. A spring pushes an obturator in the PRV, thus opening the valve. Pressure from downstream pushes the diaphragm and obturator upward in the PRV, closing it. When there is downstream demand, pressure below the diaphragm reduces and the spring forces the obturator downward to allow water to flow through the valve. The higher the demand, the greater the pressure decrease under the diaphragm and the greater the flow through the valve. This is dynamic pressure control. When downstream demand decreases, the pressure below the diaphragm increases, balancing the force of the spring and closing the valve at the required setting for the target downstream pressure. This is static pressure control. Caleffi PRVs from Altecnic are manufactured to the highest quality standards to comply with the latest European and UK water regulations, including WRAS Approved Product status. Altecnic offers a broad range of PRVs to meet the needs of the installers, from domestic 15mm compression to commercial DN300. Other features include the easy-to-use dial-up settings of the 535 and new 535H ranges, ideal for semi-commercial and industrial applications.

A COMMITMENT TO HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTS AND COMPETITIVE PRICES IS STILL IN PLACE AFTER 30 YEARS…
Three decades in Dargan for McCaig Collim
M
cCaig Collim is celebrating 30 years of success at Dargan Crescent in Belfast with the same focus, commitment and dedication displayed as when the company first moved into the purpose-built facilities. One of the first tenants in Dargan Crescent, this highly respected distributor for the heating, pipeline, insulation and ventilation industries moved to what was Belfast’s new enterprise zone in 1986 after outgrowing its original premises at Greenwood Avenue in Belfast. The company moved to Dargan Crescent on a tide of optimism.
Over the next three decades, McCaig Collim has faced many challenges and changes. However, the central themes of quality products and competitive prices have remained in place and are very much seen as a legacy of the company’s founders. Company founder, Bob Collim’s son Neil, is the Managing Director and he is proud of the fact that McCaig Collim’s original principles remain very much intact. “My father and the other company founder, Norman McCaig, both had a very specific way of doing business and that was based on building strong relationships
with customers alongside a great service,” he explained. “High quality products sold at competitive prices is key to this and it is something that remains central to everything that we do. “The industry has changed massively since we moved into Dargan but by keeping to those principals we have been able to meet challenges head on.” The proof of this can be easily quantified, with McCaig Collim’s Dargan Crescent facilities a hive of activity, with the company’s own fleet constantly revolving in and out of the service yard alongside many of its loyal customers.

A company that has grown up together
A
s a family-owned and run company that boasts staff averaging at least 15 years’ service with the company, McCaig Collim is one of those rare companies where loyalty is not only encouraged, but it is rewarded. Established in 1969 by business partners Norman McCaig and Bob Collim, the company started life in a small warehouse located behind a house in Greenwood Avenue. The two business partners, along with Company Director, Jim Barbour, used this base to steadily build the company, but following Norman’s move to become a
full-time artist, Bob took over the company from his business partner in the early 1980s. By 1986, the Greenwood premises were too small, so the company moved to its current base at Dargan Crescent in Belfast. That same year, Jack Lewers joined the company to help build the sales of steel pipe and fittings. At present, the family link remains in place, with three of Bob’s sons involved. Neil is the company’s Managing Director while Ian is a Director and Tony heads up the spiral ducting workshop. Up until two years ago, there remained a link to the McCaig family, with Norman Johnston – Norman
McCaig’s nephew – retiring from his Sales Manager position. The vast majority of a nearly 30-strong staff are also longserving, with, for example, Joyce Green, Karen McClenaghan and Billy Bell all marking more than 25 years each. “This business was my father’s fifth child and was treated like a member of the family,” said Neil Collim. “But he always stressed the importance of looking after your staff and that is something that we still feel is very important.” Many of the staff - including Neil joined McCaig Collim straight from school and their commitment has helped develop a strong company.

PIPEWORK, HEATING, VENTILATION AND INSULATION PRODUCTS MEET THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF QUALITY…
Impressive product range matched by excellent service McCaig Collim has established itself as the leading independent supplier to the mechanical, heating, ventilation, pipeline and insulation industries in Northern Ireland. That has been achieved through the strength of the company’s extensive yet high quality product range available through the impressive 40,000sqft facility at Duncrue Crescent. This extensive range includes pipeline, climate control, pumps and heating and ventilation products which are supplied either at the Belfast trade counter or through the company’s fleet of lorries that deliver throughout
Northern Ireland daily. Jim McCalmont, Sales Manager at McCaig Collim, explained that the company closely monitors the quality of the product range. “That is very important,” he said. “We have a hard-earned reputation for supplying reliable products. “Every customer wants to find the right balance between quality and price and we have based our product range on those two factors. “We only represent manufacturers who are market leaders in their sector. We have developed these relationships over many, many years and that is reflected in the
level of service we are able to deliver to our customers.” However, an impressive product range means little without service. Jim added, “We hold extensive stock levels in Belfast so we can ensure a quick turnaround of orders. “That’s the same if you are coming direct to the trade counter or receiving a delivery from one of our five lorries and two vans.”

company can only be successful if everyone is pulling in the same direction and that ethos is clear at McCaig Collim. After nearly 50 years in business and 30 years based at Dargan Crescent, it is clear that the company holds the right ingredients for success. But a continual development of the product range and a focus on developing new opportunities highlights that this success isn’t taken for granted. Mark Thompson, Sales Representative, explained, “I always say that we are all part of Team MCC. I may be the one out
on the road meeting customers face to face or it could be the sales team working directly on the phone, but we can only do our job with confidence if there is trust that we can deliver. “Customer service is paramount and it is good for us to know that we have the full support of a well-run team behind us, from the administration through to the stores.” He added, “The wealth of experience we have in-house is a vital element of our service. “It may be clichéd, but you are only as good as your last sale. There is a lot of competition out there, so we know that we have
to keep working hard to meet the needs of all our customers.” The fact that the company works with all the leading plumbers’ merchants in Northern Ireland alongside the main M&E and other specialist contractors speaks volumes. That trust has been extended beyond the province. “Many contractors have had to look beyond Northern Ireland for work but due to the trust they have in us, we have remained an important part of their supply chain. That has brought new challenges on delivering products into Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland but we have successfully met these.”

CIF: MAKE 2017 THE SAFEST YEAR ON IRISH CONSTRUCTION SITES
CHINA INVESTS IN IRISH ENERGY MARKET China has made its first investment in Ireland’s energy market, with the European arm of its state-owned nuclear development company China General Nuclear (CGN) agreeing to buy 14 wind farms from Irish renewable energy group Gaelectric. The Irish firm will continue to manage the assets, which include seven wind farms in the Republic and seven in the North, on behalf of CGN. Of the 14 wind farms, 10 are operational while the remaining four will be by the middle of 2018. Gaelectric still has more than 500MW worth of wind and solar-generated renewable power projects in the pipeline. Chief Executive, Barry Gavin, said, “This agreement allows us to support the group’s balance sheet, paying down debt and creating the foundations for our other operational and development interests in the renewable energy sector, including a near-term development pipeline across wind, solar, biomass and energy storage.” T: (RoI/NI) 00353 1 643 0800 - W: www.gaelectric.ie
NO TAKE-UP OF LEAD PIPE REMOVAL GRANT Despite the availability of a grant to replace lead pipes, only a handful of householders have applied for the scheme and plumbers say they have had virtually no requests to carry out the work. Irish Water says its €370million plan will “not achieve significant benefits” if householders do not replace the last section of pipe running through their garden and house. Grant assistance may have to be ramped up or the work carried out for free if householders continue to take no action. The grant covers 80% of the cost of the work, up to a maximum of €4,000 for households with an income of €50,000 or less and 50% of the grant worth up to €2,500 for households with an income between €50,000-75,000. The Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHCI) said its members had little or no inquiries about replacing lead pipes, either under the grant scheme or independently.

BOILERS
NEIL GAFFNEY, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT VOKÈRA IRELAND, EXPLAINS HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO HAVE HIGHEFFICIENCY CONDENSING BOILERS REGULARLY SERVICED…
At your service I nstallers know that regular servicing is vital to ensure a boiler is running safely and efficiently but for customers, it’s not always at the top of their priority list. Barely any attention is paid to heating systems during the warmer months of the year, but by encouraging their customers to have regular services, installers can spread their work out and have a constant supply of work across the year. These regular services also give installers the opportunity to carry out any maintenance required or upgrade to a newer, moreefficient model. Manufacturers build a variety of features into their boilers to make it even easier for installers and their customers to know when a service is due. For instance, Vokèra’s Vision range actually counts the hours it condenses, up-to 2,500 hours, and then displays a ‘service required’ code. Vokèra also builds an AutoStop feature into most of its boilers, which is perfect for
local authorities and housing associations and is activated using a key fob device. Designed to help landlords carry out their legal obligations of annual gas safety checks, the Autostop function will notify the tenant that action is required, one month prior to the annual gas safety check being due. If the tenant fails to arrange a gas safety check, the boiler will go into standby mode until it can be reset during the annual inspection. It is not only within the boilers themselves where manufacturers help; they also run training courses to ensure installers are aware of key features and all the latest technological changes so they can service boilers effectively. Vokèra runs regular workshops for groups of around eight individual installers and also sessions for a number of installers from one company, or one-to-one training. The oneto-one training is particularly popular for customers installing and maintaining a specific Vokèra product range as the time is

As an industry, we need to work together to completely change the typical attitude of homeowners who so often ignore the need for boiler servicing. We should be promoting servicing as an essential requirement in much the same way as we view the need to get our cars serviced regularly in order to keep maintenance bills down, help avoid any surprises and increase the value of the car when it comes to selling it. WATER TREATMENT AND PROTECTION
RICHARD THOMPSON, AREA SALES MANAGER FOR IRELAND AT FERNOX, OUTLINES THE IMPORTANCE OF FILTER TECHNOLOGY AND CHEMICAL WATER TREATMENT WHEN MAINTAINING A BOILER’S EFFICIENCY AND LIFESPAN…
The future of maintenance
T
he modern gas condensing boiler is significantly more efficient, reliable and safe than its predecessors. However, as modern boilers have evolved to become smaller, their internal components are also smaller and the narrow waterways means they are more vulnerable to damage from contaminated system water. Therefore, they are particularly at risk from the build- up of circulating system debris, scale and sludge. The accumulation of corrosion deposits generally within the system means that the boiler has to use extra energy and fuel to enable the central heating system to reach the desired temperature, making the system less efficient and more expensive to run. When sludge or scale enters the boiler itself, it can become trapped and can ultimately cause a blockage resulting in the premature failure of a boiler and costly repairs. As such, it is important for the boiler to be protected against blockages. One of the most effective methods is to use inline filter technology to capture and contain any circulating material for safe removal. For the best possible results, it is vital to seek a filter solution that can capture and contain both magnetic and non-magnetic debris. Outlined as best practice by leading boiler manufacturers, installing a system filter, such as the Fernox TF1 Omega Filter, alongside the use of an inhibitor, can help maintain the efficiency and reliability of a system whilst guarding the boiler against

damage from debris. Precision-engineered, the TF1 Omega Filter consists of a nickel-plated brass body and incorporates the use of a powerful, Neodymium magnet with Hydronic Particle Separation (HPS) technology. Optimising flow trajectories, this unique combination results in marketleading levels of debris capture and superior system protection. Designed for installers, the filter is extremely flexible and can be installed horizontally or vertically on 22mm, 28mm, ¾” or 1” pipework in both flow directions. It can also be positioned at a 45° angle if required – making it fast to install even in the most confined or awkward spaces. Additionally, depending upon installer preference, the TF1 Omega Filter is supplied with either high-quality valves or a slip socket connection. Furthermore, when used in combination with Fernox Filter Fluid+ Protector, the filter becomes even more effective. Combining Fernox Protector F1, to prevent the formation of scale, corrosion or sludge within the system, and an active dispersant to continuously detect, lift and deliver debris to an inline filter – it can have a significant impact on overall efficiency and system protection. The evolution of boiler technology has resulted in superior efficiency and reliability, however at the same time – this has unfortunately introduced an increased vulnerability to sludge, debris and scale. DESPITE THE REFERENDUM RESULT, A NEW SURVEY HAS SHOWN THAT EUROPEAN PRODUCTS ARE STILL VIEWED AS THE BEST…
Purchasing attitudes remain intact post-Brexit
W
ith 76% of people surveyed thinking that the country of manufacture is an important factor when it comes to purchasing, a recent survey, carried out by Giacomini, has explored the attitudes toward manufacturing and revealed some interesting post-Brexit insights. When asked if the country of origin was checked before purchasing any building or HVAC supplies, just 19% said that they never check – a statistic which demonstrates the importance of a products’ origin when making decisions about purchasing. 83.5% of respondents to the Giacomini survey said they prefer to buy products from a European manufacturer, with just 8% saying that they wouldn’t ever buy a product if they knew it was made in Europe. The survey also focused on more specific issues within the HVAC industry and asked respondents if heat interface units have made converting offices into residential properties more achievable. An overwhelming 84% agreed, which reinforces the noticeable growth that Giacomini has seen since regulations surrounding planning permission were altered, meaning that
Class B1 offices could be converted to Class C3 residential dwellings without the need for specific planning and development permission. Giacomini UK is the UK division of the Italian company, Giacomini, one of Europe’s largest producers of plumbing brassware and radiator valves and prides itself on its products being made to the highest specification at the company’s sophisticated manufacturing facilities in San Maurizio d’Opaglio, Italy. Matt Lowe, Managing Director of Giacomini UK, commented, “PostBrexit, attitudes towards all the EU
were always going to be interesting and our survey gave us some fascinating insight into mindsets and purchasing decision making factors. It would appear that people are now more conscious of where products come from, but that EU products are still thought to be the best – despite the outcome of the referendum!” For more information about Giacomini, visit www.giacomini.co.uk or contact Warren Smyth, Technical Sales Engineer for Ireland on (RoI/NI) +44 (0)7557 941553 or by emailing warren.smyth@giacomini.co.uk

PUSH-FIT FITTINGS
PUSH-FIT FITTINGS DO NOT REMOVE THE NEED FOR A PLUMBER SAYS LEE FLOOD, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF QUALITY AT JG SPEEDFIT, WHO WEIGHS UP THE BENEFITS OF USING THESE SIMPLE SYSTEMS
Plumbers still required T he increase in popularity of simple-to-use push-fit fittings has given rise to the belief that a specialist skill is not required to install them. This has led some in the industry to believe that the art of plumbing is becoming obsolete, but this is not the case. It is important to acknowledge the role soldering will always have in the industry. There is no hiding
from the fact that plumbers will always be required to solder some components in a plumbing system. However, taking advantage of quicker and easier-to-install systems, like push-fit fittings, shows that the two products or methods are compatible. The design of a push-fit connector is not just compatible for joining plastic to plastic. Pushfit fittings are designed

to lock any two pipes together – the material of the two pipes does not have to be the same. If the pipe is free of score marks, the push-fit fitting can twist and lock into position to ensure a secure connection, showing that the system is compatible with both plastic and copper. All plumbing professionals have their own techniques and preferred tools and there is no doubting the growing popularity of push-fit fittings in
the industry. Push-fit plumbing systems are reliable and do not remove some of the skill associated with plumbing. As with any profession, it depends on the product that is used. What is clear is that push-fit plumbing systems should not be discounted or seen as a basic option, but rather adding value to customers and the end user. fter scoring success at the award-winning IFA National Football Stadium at Windsor Park, William Coates Ltd has made a splash at the new Olympia Leisure Centre. Located in the shadow of the impressive new stadium – it shares a roof with the new West Stand – the new-build project is much more than the traditional swimming pool and sports hall it has replaced. Instead, the Belfast City Council facilities form part of a new sporting and community hub, with the Olympia Leisure Centre combining leisure facilities such as gym, swimming and sports hall with exciting new offerings including a day spa and coffee corner. Run by GLL, the Belfast City Council-owned facility was part funded by the former Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) as part of an overall contribution of the Windsor Park redevelopment. Just as the company did at the redeveloped national football stadium, William Coates Ltd worked closely with main contractor, O’Hare & McGovern, on the Olympia Leisure Centre, with the two projects overlapping at one stage. The fact that William Coates was already familiar with the site put the company in the driving seat

in terms of the on-site logistics but, overall, these two projects were completely separate. The new Olympia Leisure Centre replaced the existing facilities, with the former building being demolished to provide car parking and free up space for the final stage of the project, which involves the creation of a new boulevard, play space and 3G pitch. For the Olympia Leisure Centre, William Coates Ltd completed an extensive list of work, ranging from fully modulating boilers, high efficiency pumps and rainwater harvesting to pressurisation units, air-handling units and a Building Management System (BMS). The new centre features two swimming pools, a 120-station gym, a spin studio, a main sports hall,
exercise studio, day space, coffee shop and meeting rooms in addition to staff facilities. With all the various individual requirements for each element of the new complex, William Coates Ltd had a veritable jigsaw puzzle to complete. Adrian Campbell, Mechanical Contracts Director at William Coates Ltd said, “We pride ourselves on our ability to work closely with the project team to provide value engineered solutions. This is particularly important at the planning stage but was brought even more into focus due to the wide range of different functions within the building. “In a way, there we had a lot of mini projects going on under the one roof but we also had to look at the bigger
picture and consider how they would blend together. We enjoy challenges such as this.” The ability to control the heating and cooling elements of the building was central to the project, with energy efficiency right at the heart of every decision. Aesthetically, areas such as the gym have more of an industrial look, with exposed services and steel beams meaning it wasn’t a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ for the mechanical installation. Adrian believes the company’s wideranging experience helped ensure that the Olympia Leisure Centre project ran smoothly. “By being involved in the early stages of the project, we were able to put that experience to good use,” he explained. “We already had good

FUTURE Following the dual completion of the IFA National Football Stadium at Windsor Park and the Olympia Leisure Centre, William Coates Ltd is clearly fighting fit and the company is set to continue to make great strides forward this year. Further expansion within the GB market
“Over the years, we have worked closely with Belfast City Council, and the Olympia adds to our growing portfolio of leisure facilities and services. “ is set to be coupled with a return to carrying out projects in the Republic of Ireland as well as a continuation of high profile projects in Northern Ireland. Managing Director, Paul Dickson, explained, “Firstly, we are delighted to have completed the M&E services at the new Olympia Leisure Centre, which follow on from our work at Windsor Park. Over the years, we have worked closely with Belfast City Council, and the Olympia adds to our growing portfolio of leisure facilities and services.
“These two projects have played a major role in the continued expansion of the company over the last three years. “Our turnover has grown significantly, with projects having been completed in Northern Ireland and across Great Britain. eliance Worldwide Corporation (RWC) has used its expertise to provide a range of energy saving products for the new Olympia Leisure Centre. The company’s pre-plumbed timeflow shower panels and Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs) have already been successfully installed at the impressive Bangor Aurora Aquatic and Leisure Complex and the redeveloped Kingspan Rugby Stadium in Belfast, and they proved perfect for this impressive new facility. The RWC panels offer ease of use combined with high levels of water efficiency and reliability, not to mention simple access for maintenance and servicing. The ergonomic operation

and aesthetically pleasing design of the showering devices were also an important factor. The panels have recently been improved with the addition of an antibacterial self-sealant system to fight against the ingress of external bacteria into the system. The TMVs offer an additional level of health and safety protection, which is particularly important on projects such as this. RWC also supplied the company’s new shutdown packs for the washrooms. Using low profile ceiling mounted PIR sensors, the packs, as the name suggests, shutdown the water supply when the washroom is not in use. Not only does this enhance water efficiency, but it can also avoid leak damage.
Finally, the system also attracts BREEAM points. Stuart Harron, Sales Director, Ireland, at RWC said, “We worked closely with the consultant and contractor to provide advice on the location of the TMVs to help combat legionella and bacteria growth in line with the latest regulations while the addition of the new shutdown pack is a particular bonus for a project such as this which has a BREEAM target to meet.”

ohn J Doyle Ltd was responsible for the design, supply and installation of the Dinak flue system at the new Olympia Leisure Centre in Belfast. This project involved the installation of one common header flue designed for the six condensing boilers. The DWJ + DWhp2 flue is perfect for condensing applications such as this site, as the flue system must deal with condensate and over pressure. The company also designed and installed the CHP flue system.
John Doyle, Managing Director, explained, “Having a manufacturer like Dinak who’ve invested in having all their products tested by TUV gives us the confidence we need, especially now flue systems must be capable of low temperature/high temperature, over pressure and condensate. “Also, the experience of our own in-house design engineers and experienced installation teams alongside our software and technical ability ensures the system is designed and installed correctly.”

RADIATORS
WITH RADIATORS ACCOUNTING FOR OVER 90% OF HEATING SYSTEMS IN THE UK AND IRELAND, STELRAD REMAINS AHEAD OF THE GAME WITH ITS DECORATIVE RANGE…
Decorative radiators - the quiet heating revolution
T
here is something of a quiet revolution taking place in homes across the UK and Ireland. Despite the choice of other options, radiators are still the emitter of choice for well over 90% of the heating systems in the UK and Irish market. However, the big change is that the radiators that are now being selected are tending to be more stylish. With its radiators providing outstanding performance, high outputs and easy installation, it’s clear to see why Stelrad is the UK and Ireland’s number one brand.
is as inexpensive as possible, expects the radiator they buy to be aesthetically pleasing, to have rounded edges and an excellent paint finish. Stelrad’s most basic radiator offers all those things, and now even Stelrad’s Low Surface Temperature (LST) radiators in its Safety Series and the Radical in the Energy Saving Series are extremely sleek and good looking. With the ease of installation of a Stelrad radiator, and its competitive price, it’s easy to see why installers recommend and are happy to work with Stelrad products on a day-to-day basis.
WHERE IT BEGAN The bathroom was the first room in the home to benefit from something a bit more special, with the Classic Towel Rail being the first non-standard response to heating in a home. Stelrad responded to this demand and introduced the Aqua Series, which offers a selection of decorative and designer radiators for the bathroom. This preference for tall, elegant, designer radiators has now spread to the kitchen. Yet the days of a radiator being a purely functional heating emitter are long gone. Even a person looking to buy a radiator that

ADDED PROFIT OPPORTUNITY Installers have recognised that the wider selection of options available to them adds a real business opportunity. By recommending decorative radiators, rather than a standard radiator, they will have happy and satisfied customers who get stunning looking radiators. But the outcome is a better return on the job, with a standard mark-up on a more expensively priced design of radiator. So everyone is happy – installer and the customer. of design options to meet the home-owner’s and the installer’s preferences. There’s added value, more choice, more style and an unbeatable service when you choose Stelrad radiators. Building APPRENTICESHIP NUMBERS ARE STILL LOW BUT NEW CIF PRESIDENT DOMINIC DOHENY PLANS TO CHANGE THAT. HE TALKS TO P&H MAGAZINE ABOUT BOOSTING REGIONAL GROWTH AND WORKING WITH GOVERNMENT TO TRANSFORM THE SECTOR...
D
ominic Doheny is an excellent choice for President of the Construction Industry Federation (CIF). Having worked in the industry all his life (initially as a Quantity Surveyor and currently as joint Managing Director at John Flanagan Developments), he has weathered more than one construction downturn and is well positioned to guide the sector towards recovery and longevity. Originally from Tullamore in Co Offaly, Dominic believes that supporting regional construction companies to deliver housing and infrastructure outside the Greater Dublin Area is the key to survival. “Currently housebuilding, particularly outside Dublin, is simply not viable. Housebuilders are not getting access to finance at the right terms and infrastructure funding is at a record low. The CIF will be tackling this issue head-on in 2017. We will be carrying out

on solid foundations a study into the availability of finance and sharing our findings with the Government. There are many regional businesses across Ireland at present that are being left behind by the economic recovery.” Dominic says it is these businesses that have a huge contribution to make to our communities and economies. “We are experiencing a time of great transition within construction, and I believe that the prospective growth that we look set to witness up to 2020 should benefit the entire industry.” According to DKM Consultants’ latest report, achieving targets set out in the Government’s Public Capital Programme would see the construction industry grow from €15billion to €20billion by 2020, generating around 110,000 jobs. “This could be a great period of growth and opportunity if we are supported in the same way that Ireland’s food, med-tech and financial services industries have been over the past 30 years. We currently have to engage across six Government departments who all impact on our sector. Not one of these departments has a construction industry remit. That is why we need a Minister that has direct responsibility for our industry.” Support from the government would help ensure the construction industry has the capacity to deliver throughout the coming decade. “We need to ensure that we have continuity in investment as this

will help attract more people into the industry, along with attracting those that have emigrated back home.” Collaboration will be the difference between a sector on the upswing and one moving at half speed. An ambitious strategy for construction, similar to those established in the food and financial services industries, would result in a dynamic economy and society with connected and thriving regional businesses that provide opportunities for individuals to work and live in these communities. “The price of inaction on this is a continuing housing and homelessness crisis, the decline of rural Ireland and a congested capital, choking under the weight of producing almost 50% of Irish GDP.” With the construction sector set to grow by 9% annually up to 2020, DKM’s new report has stated that 11,800 plumbers are needed to fuel this surge in activity. But with apprenticeship numbers still so low, where will these plumbers come from? According to Dominic, the CIF is focused on attracting young people into the industry to ensure recovery isn’t hampered by a skills shortage in the medium-term. Ongoing work with the Government and agencies such as SOLAS, the Department of Education’s Skills Planning and Enterprise Engagement Unit, and the Education and Training Boards will help turn the issue around and ensure skilled professionals are available to get the job done.
“We need skilled workers coming on stream to meet this demand. This is why we have set up the apprentices website, to help young people who are looking for an apprenticeship connect with Ireland’s leading construction companies. So far, we have had an excellent response from industry to the initiative and a number of successful appren, tices. However, we are also concerned about the chronically low levels of female apprenticeships and will work with SOLAS and others to address this.”
“We are experiencing a time of great transition within construction and I believe that the prospective growth that we look set to witness up to 2020 should benefit the entire industry.” According to the CIF, approximately 2000 new apprentices started in 2016. However, the construction industry is committed to increasing this number to an annual rate of 4,000. “The issue of apprenticeships is one that has gone on for too long in the industry and needs to be addressed if we are to move forward and ensure the sector continues to recover and grow.” T: 00353 (1) 406 6000 E: info@cif.ie W: www.cif.ie

competent person scheme in Ireland
In response to an article referring to an increase in emergency call-outs to stove-related domestic fires and an increase in CO incidents linked to poor stove installation, The Irish Times published a letter by OFTEC calling for a mandatory competent person scheme in the Republic of Ireland. OFTEC highlighted that solid fuel and oil users have very little protection in Ireland and minimal opportunity for redress should an installation not comply with building regulations. This is in stark contrast to gas and electrical work which is regulated by the Commissioner for Regulation. OFTEC argues that this needs to change to ensure all households are safe and to decrease the number of dangerous incidents.
Free Solid Fuel registration OFTEC continues to push the importance of using competent persons for oil and solid fuel installation works and servicing. SOLAR ENERGY COMPANY TO CREATE 60 JOBS IN DUBLIN
NEW ORDERS INCREASE AT END OF 2016 According to the Ulster Bank Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index, the Irish construction sector ended 2016 on a positive note, with activity continuing to rise sharply amid a faster expansion of new orders. The rate of job creation and growth of purchasing activity remained substantial, and firms were strongly optimistic that activity would increase further in 2017. Commenting on the survey, Simon Barry, Chief Economist Republic of Ireland at Ulster Bank, said, “Firms remain optimistic about the coming year with almost two thirds of respondents expecting further growth in activity in the coming 12 months. While a notable late-year pick-up in input prices points to increased challenges on the costs front, positive sentiment about the year ahead is being underpinned by signs of improving conditions in both the construction sector itself and the wider Irish economy.”
CER ADVISES REBATE FOR PEOPLE ALREADY USING WATER METERS According to the Commission on Energy Regulation, plans to install more water meters should be “parked” but not “abandoned” to allow for the future full rollout of the equipment. Energy Regulation Commissioner, Paul McGowan, also said the system should be given a special tax rebate to encourage others to sign up. He added that, despite the fact 25% of homes across the country are still without meters, spending should be spent on other areas. Meanwhile, the energy regulator has confirmed that, while the Commission is in favour of postponing further water meter installations, it has not yet conducted any cost-benefit analysis of this for the taxpayer. While opponents of water charges would welcome an end to the installation of further water meters, it is not clear how a mooted free water usage allowance could be provided to people without some way to check how much each household uses.

STUDY SHOWS POTENTIAL MARKET FOR EPC IN IRELAND A report has been carried out by Dublin energy agency, Codema, showing that energy efficiency upgrades carried out through an Energy Performance Joe Hayden, Codema. Contract (EPC) can contribute significantly to Ireland’s energy targets. However, a lack of knowledge about EPC in general is preventing the uptake of new projects nationally. Codema’s Executive Engineer and author of the report, Joe Hayden, said, “What the report highlights is a huge opportunity to retrofit thousands of buildings across the country and to guarantee the energy performance of these buildings using the EPC model, which is tried and tested in many European countries.” For more information on the report, visit http:// guarantee-project.eu/

INDUSTRY INSIGHT
TWO NEW REPORTS HAVE HIGHLIGHTED ISSUES SURROUNDING QUALITY STANDARDS IN THE PLUMBING AND HEATING INDUSTRY…
New report confirms fears over CE Marked products

Concerns over gas engineer training
R
esearch commissioned by the Gas Industry Safety Group (GISG) and the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) has found an alarming disparity in the level of training provided to gas engineer students in the UK. The work was undertaken in light of an increase in unsafe gas work from recently qualified engineers, with, according the Gas Safe Register, volumes up from 1% to 5% leading to growing concerns that some training appears to focus on passing assessments rather than really testing job competency. The research, involving in-depth interviews with newly qualified gas engineers, included questions relating to course lengths, theory and practical components in course content, assessments, industry placements and mentoring opportunities. The research revealed particular unease expressed by some interviewees that training had been too short. Concerns were also raised about the apparent willingness of some training establishments to keep training failing students until they passed the assessments, regardless of how many attempts taken. THE GISG and IGEM have now called for the Government and industry to undertake a review to establish minimum standards of training across all gas engineer training programmes. recent report by the European Commission has highlighted how unscrupulous manufacturers and importers are flouting the CE Mark regulations. Yvonne Orgill, Chief Executive of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association, said, “Consumers throughout the UK are being duped into purchasing goods which they genuinely believe to be up to standard and safe to use. But, in fact, because they don’t know where they were made and who made them, they could be spending hardearned cash on sub-standard and illegal products. The new report confirms what we have been saying for years and action needs to be taken for the public good.” BMA members have embraced the Harmonised European Standards that mean bathroom products must have the CE Mark fixed to the product, instruction literature, or packaging. “Our industry is being adversely affected and consumers could be being put into harm’s way,” added Yvonne. “We will continue to be very vocal about the problem and highlight the issues.” www.bathroom-association.org
