Wind sector to benefit from data centre boost
W
ith Ireland’s data centre boom set to continue, The Irish Wind Energy Association believes high-tech data centres could boost the Irish wind sector and add hundreds of megawatts to electricity demand. In a recent report by the Association, head of the IWEA Kenneth Matthews said Ireland’s renewable energy credentials are key when it comes to attracting high tech companies to Ireland, while renewable energies and particularly wind are set to play a significant part of the country’s future recovery. Apple Corp’s recently announced intention to build a new data centre in Athenry, Co Galway continues the trend of big technology companies setting up in Ireland. It’s hoped that the €850million centre will be powered entirely from renewables and according to a new study by Pöyry, a consulting and engineering consultancy, using wind energy to meet electricity demand from data centres will reduce electricity prices in Ireland for both domestic and industrial consumers.
A
n information session on two of Firebird Heating Solutions’ latest products proved illuminating for Firebird engineers and service team members who travelled to the company’s premises at Forkhill, Newry, from across Northern Ireland and the north east region of the Republic of Ireland to attend the event. Those present received valuable information and technical details about the new Enviromax Blue boiler, rated as the most efficient boiler in Europe on HARP and SEDBUK databases, and the new Blue Flame Enviromax boiler. Firebird is a leading manufacturer of heating solutions, including oil boilers, solar thermal and stoves. Both of the new condensing boilers use blue flame technology and are available from all Firebird stockists. T: (NI) 028 3088 8330 or (RoI) 026 45253 E: sales@firebirduk.co.uk W: www.firebird.ie

ormer Phoenix Energy Services apprentice, Michael Dempsey, from Islandmagee, has addressed a conference focusing on attracting young people into Northern Ireland’s advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors, telling his story of how his apprenticeship opened up opportunities for him. Research commissioned by the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) established that the advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors rank low on the list of careers that young people are interested in pursuing. That’s the issue 60 delegates gathered to discuss at the ‘Engineering a Better Tomorrow’ conference, which was hosted by SEMTA and Energy & Utility Skills, in collaboration with the Department for Employment and Learning. DEL Minister, Dr Stephen Farry, said, “My department is working with employers, other Government departments and our local colleges and universities to put in place a range of actions aimed at addressing employers’ engineering skills needs.” Since completing his apprenticeship, Michael has taken up the full-time position of Emergency Service engineer with Phoenix Energy Services. Duncan Whelan, Operations Manager at Phoenix Energy Services, commented, “The delivery of an apprenticeship qualification requires direct teaching, employment, onsite training, and the commitment of the individual apprentices in order to make sure they achieve high standards and valuable transferable skills.”

Ballyclare resident makes SMART decision to connect to natural gas…
firmus energy welcomes first Ballyclare home-owner to network
A
nne Crawford is celebrating being one of the first home-owners in Huntingdale, Ballyclare to have taken advantage of natural gas, which is newly available in the area, and is now enjoying the efficiency and convenience of the fuel. Taking the decision to switch to natural gas from oil now gives Anne and her family access to a SMART heating system, providing a more energy-efficient, cosy home with instant hot water at any time of the day. Anne, who lives in the Huntingdale Manor development in the town, commented, “We are delighted with the difference that the switch to natural gas has made to our home. It feels warmer than ever and during the recent heavy rain and gales, it was lovely to just curl up on the sofa and enjoy the cosy surroundings! “We took the decision to convert as our oil boiler was almost 25 years old and we were ready for a change as it hadn’t been efficient for a number of years. With natural gas recently becoming available in our area, many of our neighbours were talking about it and it sounded too good to ignore. “Now that we have it in our home, it has surpassed our expectations and we can really notice the difference. Our house heats up so quickly and it is great to get back the extra space in our garden as we were able to remove the oil tank. We are looking forward to making use of this once the summer hits!” Anne added, “We opted for the SMART

heating system which allows us to remotely control and manage the settings, so one of the extra benefits that we are really enjoying is the ability to control our heating from our iPad. “This means that we can turn our heating on and off from anywhere in the world! This is particularly handy when we are about to head home from a cold day out and can ensure the house is toasty and warm just in time for us getting back. It would be great if I could just organise it to have the tea ready for us too!” Paula Simpson, from firmus energy, said, “We are delighted that Anne and her family are enjoying the many benefits of natural gas and we look forward to connecting even more homes in the area to our convenient, low-cost energy. “With her SMART system, which includes a highly-efficient condensing combi gas boiler, Anne can set the temperature in each room to suit her requirements, which means less energy is wasted throughout her home and more money is saved. Being able to control the system remotely, from any partnered SMART device, is a massive benefit for any householder and will help Anne’s family home to be more energy efficient than ever before. “The robust heating system was fitted to a very high standard by one of our local gas registered installers, Gary Chapman. Water pressure is always high for the showers and the filtered mains water
throughout the house gives appliances a longer lifespan. The Baxi Platinum Combi boiler also comes with a ten-year parts and labour warranty which is one of the best in the industry, so it also is a great investment for Anne.” Sharon English from Baxi explained, “We are delighted that Anne chose a Baxi Platinum Combi boiler. At over 90% efficient, she is getting more heating and hot water for her money, saving her money on her fuel bills, and the ten-year warranty will give her extra peace of mind. We are proud to have designed boilers that are straightforward to install and service for heating engineers and simple to use for householders.” Anne concluded, “I would recommend firmus energy natural gas to other householders in the area without a shadow of a doubt. The connection process was very quick and efficient with minimal disruption. “We are really seeing the advantages of the system in terms of saving money on our heating bills each month, which is partly due to the lower-cost fuel but also because our system is now so energy efficient.”

olv Group has responded to an emergency in the company’s own offices – with SharkBite playing an integral role in the rescue operation. With a boiler failure on the coldest day of the year at Solv Group’s Belfast headquarters, the company needed a swift solution to get it back in operation as quickly as possible. As mechanical, electrical and environmental services experts, Solv Group had the expertise – and industry contacts – to solve the problem quickly and opted for a new Worcester Bosch boiler along with the new SharkBite range. “It is a great endorsement of SharkBite to have a company as successful as Solv Group selecting this product,” explained Garth Walsh, Product Manager, Northern Ireland, for Reliance Worldwide Corporation (UK) Ltd. “Solv Group was one of the first companies to recognise the advantages of using SharkBite so it is great to see them follow this through by using it at their own offices.” Stephen Kane, Managing Director of Solv Group, said it was a simple choice. “We’ve been using SharkBite on both domestic and commercial projects, so when we had issues with our own boiler it was an obvious choice,” he said. “The time element

is a major factor and SharkBite is simple and easy to use. The fact that you don’t need hot work permits is also a major advantage from a health and safety and insurance perspective. Overall, SharkBite ticks all the right boxes.” Solv Group has led the way with introducing SharkBite into domestic and commercial projects and the success the company has enjoyed is reflective of a growing trend within the industry for contractors to opt for this push-fit solution. Contractors, specifiers, architects and installers alike have been experiencing the benefits of SharkBite -the world’s most versatile, easy to fit, secure and watertight brand of push-fit plumbing fittings and valves. This innovative range is suitable for a wide range of applications within both hot and cold water systems in domestic and commercial projects. The key reason behind this success is its versatility, with SharkBite offering the plumbing solution for any installation with just one range of fittings required for four types of pipe! All the valves are fully demountable and can be reused instantly, further reducing time, cost and waste during installations or when making repairs or extending a SharkBite system.
Once pushed into the fitting, the sharp stainless steel teeth of the internal grab ring bite into the pipe, gripping it tightly and never letting go. The specially formulated material of the O-ring compresses to create a perfect water tight seal. With no solder, flux or heat required, SharkBite is ideal for use in listed buildings or sites where flamed jointing is not permitted. Stuart Harron, RWC’s Regional Sales Manager for Ireland, concluded, “We are delighted with how well SharkBite has been received in the plumbing and heating industry and are building on that success all the time. “We were always confident SharkBite would impact on the industry and we are working hard to highlight the benefits of this range.” T: Stuart Harron, Regional Sales Manager for Ireland, on (NI) 07909 532133 or (RoI) 0044 7909 532133. opper Industries prides itself on being ahead of the curve and when it comes to working within the lucrative renewables sector, this dedicated manufacturer has developed a product portfolio to meet every need. As more and more domestic, commercial and industrial projects utilise the advantages of renewables, installers are looking for hot water cylinders, calorifiers and combination units that meet the specific needs of this market – and that is where the attention-to-detail by Copper Industries is making all the difference. The company’s dedicated research and development team has created a range of Pods that have been designed to meet specific requirements while also being versatile enough to work with various fuel types – a necessity when working in the renewables sector. Added to this is the company’s bespoke service that is ideal for challenging projects. Here’s a closer look at some of the key products within this range:
Hothead The Hothead stratifying cylinder is suitable for both domestic and commercial applications. It combines the traditional approach to hot water storage with an innovative new internal heat exchanger , designed to encourage thermal stratification in the stored water. This provides the user with a faster

response to their hot water demands. One of the major advantages of this technology is how effective it works with solar panels, ensuring that every last ray of sunshine is utilised and the heat converted quickly and efficiently. The high efficiency heat exchanger coil tubing used in the Hothead has been certified up to 130oC and 28 bar and is suitable for use with a number of glycol and antifreeze mixes commonly used in renewable technology applications.
MaxiPod Ideal for multi-fuel situations, MaxiPod works by reversing the function of the primary (heating) and secondary (domestic) waters. The key difference between a conventional hot water cylinder and a MaxiPod is the primary source which holds the water that circulates through the radiators and underfloor heating in the building. This system allows renewable energy sources – such as solar, heat pumps and wood burners – to contribute to the heating and hot water of the building. Not only is each MaxiPod manufactured from tried and tested materials but it boasts an exemplary safety record and offers a long lifespan. It is also 100% recyclable, adding to its environmental credentials.
COVER STORY – COPPER INDUSTRIES
SolarPod With 30% of the payback from a solar panel system coming directly from the hot water cylinder, the SolarPod makes sure you get maximum payback. Copper Industries’ twin coil and triple coil SolarPods are specifically designed to work in conjunction with domestic heating systems and are manufactured with either twin or triple independent coils. One or two coils are designed to transfer heat from an independent heating source – for example, transferring heat from a central heating boiler or solid fuel boiler to the water in the solar cylinder - and the solar coil, which is manufactured from high efficiency finned tubes with a large surface area, to transfer heat from the solar panels into the solar hot water cylinder.
Bespoke biomass buffer tanks Copper Industries extended the company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing premises last year to significantly increase the company’s capacity to provide bespoke products such as the biomass buffer tanks. This bespoke range of handcrafted tanks is aimed at the commercial and industrial sectors, with some up to 50,000 litres in capacity. They have already been successfully installed in
projects across the UK and Ireland, including in the education, leisure and health sectors.
Solar thermal packages The solar thermal package from Apricus and Copper Industries incorporates vacuum solar collectors and a Hothead hot water cylinder. The Apricus vacuum tube solar collector is a highly efficient solar hot water heater which is particularly suitable for northern climates such as the UK and Ireland and it works perfectly with the Hothead. The curved absorber inside each vacuum tube means that the Apricus system collects energy from early morning until evening, maximising the potential of this collector in our climate conditions and making it one of the most efficient products available. All these products highlight the dedication to the renewables sector provided by Copper Industries and as well as benefiting from quality products, customers can also avail of a complete design service. In addition, Copper Industries holds the internationally recognised ISO 9001 quality assurance accreditation while all products are manufactured in line with British Standards and best practice governing the production of stainless steel and cylinders.

MARTYN BRIDGES, WORCESTER’S DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT, TELLS US WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE MANUFACTURER’S LATEST GAS-FIRED BOILER – THE GREENSTAR i… STAND
All ‘i’s on Worcester’s new boiler
W
ith the i Junior installed in as many as one in every 20 UK homes, the legacy established by the Greenstar i Junior gas-fired combi undoubtedly makes it a hard act to follow. However, Worcester is always striving to bring technologies to market that are not only more efficient than their predecessors, but also simpler to install. Keeping feedback from both heating engineers and home-owners in mind, we’ve developed the new Greenstar i - and the end result offers a number of features addressing a number of the current challenges facing the heating industry. Following the general customer requirement of higher hot water flow rates, we have worked hard to increase the output of our new boiler, improving the rates of each variant. We’ve also extended the range of outputs on offer with the i System boiler series, which will ultimately permit installers to buy a boiler more precisely suited to the requirements of each individual hot water and heating system. The introduction of the ErP directive means that, from August 1, all boilers must meet certain additional criteria, one of which is that
14 | PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE
the circulating pump fitted within the boiler must be of a low-energy type. These pumps, like a low-energy light bulb, offer the same performance while consuming less energy which, when you consider that 23 million homes could have pumps operating on 50-70W rather than 100W and above, offers the potential for a significant collective saving.
BENEFIT The well-documented issue of frozen condensate was one we sought to resolve, and each new Greenstar i boiler will benefit from a large condensate siphon as standard, allowing installers to reintroduce externallyrun condensate pipes. Not only will this avoid unsightly pipes in the kitchens where 60% of boilers are fitted – but we’re confident that it will also help to save money, averting the risks involved in disrupting expensive kitchen worktops and cupboards with a drill. At Worcester, we’re always looking to make the job of an installer that bit easier, and another key feature of the new Greenstar i is that certain internal components are easier to get to, and thus service or repair.

PLUMBING & HEATING TRADE EVENT DUBLIN
Both the expansion vessel and the fan are now located much more conveniently, meaning that it is no longer necessary to take the boiler off the wall in order for the vessel to be replaced, while installers can access the fan without having to break or disturb the combustion chamber seal. Finally, the new product will benefit from a clear and user-friendly new interface, specially designed to offer a more direct interaction with the boiler for installers and home-owners alike. Rolling text explains the action of the operator as well as the boiler function at that exact time, while the interface will guide installers through the requirements of the Benchmark checklist – rendering log book completion a great deal simpler. The close relationship we have with our installers enables us to put them front of mind when developing new products, and it’s largely thanks to their feedback over the last 10 years that we’ve been able to develop our new boiler. ADEY COMPETITION ADEY’s best practice approach makes perfect heating spring cleaning
A
DEY Professional Heating Solutions believes now is the perfect time for installers to be urging customers to include a central heating system ‘spring clean’ as part of an annual home maintenance regime. Installers know that to promote healthy and efficient central heating systems, regular maintenance is key. But there are many householders that aren’t aware that most common central heating system problems can be fixed simply by draining and
cleaning the system. With less demand for heating during the warmer months, checking your customers’ heating systems in spring, and making sure it is working efficiently, means they can be confident it is safe, reliable and cost-effective. A full system flush using ADEY’s MagnaCleanse can remove virtually 100% of the suspended sludge and other non-magnetic debris in just one pass. As most of what enters the filter is retained, it prevents the sludge and debris from entering and damaging the boiler and circulating around the heating system. The flush could take as little as two hours to complete and is up to two-thirds quicker than a traditional power-flush.
To promote healthy heating systems, ADEY Professional Heating Solutions has teamed up with Plumbing & Heating Magazine to offer one lucky installer the chance to win its fast and effective flushing process, MagnaCleanse, as well as ADEY’s premium quality chemicals, MC1+ Protector and MC5 Cleaner. ADEY encourages installers to use its MagnaCleanse process as part of a four-step best practice approach to heating system maintenance. This award-winning method includes: • A heating ‘spring clean’ with the introduction of a premium cleaner, MC3+ or MC5 RapidFlush. • A full system flush using ADEY’s MagnaCleanse process. • Installation of a MagnaClean filter. • System dosing with MC1+ Protector to provide ongoing protection.
For a chance to win, simply answer the following question: How quickly could a full central heating system flush take to complete using ADEY’s MagnaCleanse process? A) Six hours
B) Four hours
C) Two hours
Please send your answer, along with your name and contact details, to marketing@adey.com by Sunday 31 May.

VAILLANT EXTENDS ITS SUPPORT FOR INSTALLERS...
New service line and app from Vaillant
L
eading heating and hot water specialist Vaillant is extending the support it offers to installers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Installers in the Republic of Ireland can now benefit from a new dedicated service line whilst Vaillant Advance members in Northern Ireland can take advantage of its enhanced masterTEC app. The new local rate service line offers installers in the Republic of Ireland instant access to Vaillant’s team of technical experts, meaning those working with new or old Vaillant products can benefit from the team’s expertise on technical issues regarding installation and servicing. A new version of Vaillant’s masterTEC app has also been launched in conjunction with the company’s new industry-leading Advance loyalty scheme. Available to those working in Northern Ireland, the app gives installers everything they need to advance their knowledge, earnings and business. Specifically developed for one-off installers working with the company’s range of ecoTEC boilers and other technologies, the masterTEC Apple iPhone app provides instant and easy access to a range of tools and documents. Furthermore, Vaillant Advance members can benefit from additional functionality, including the ability to register an install for its guarantee and Advance credits by simply scanning the boiler’s barcode. The masterTEC installer app is built around three core functions:
www.plumbingmag.com
FOLLOW US ON:
• Registrations Exclusively available to Advance installers, this function allows the user to scan the barcode of the boiler they have installed, to instantly register its guarantee and Advance credits. Connectivity at the point of registration is not necessary as data is automatically uploaded as soon as the phone has a 3G/4G signal or a Wifi connection. • Knowledge base A hub of technical information and documents, including product information, technical tables, and optimised user, installation and spare parts manuals that allow the user to navigate directly to the section needed, and the option to contact a local spare parts stockist who stocks that part, directly from the page. Users can also tag content as favourites for quick access. • Savings calculator A helpful sales tool for all Vaillant installers to use when discussing potential savings when upgrading to a new Vaillant boiler. The calculator allows the installer to demonstrate both fuel and carbon savings according to the house type, size, age and the heating source being replaced. Additional functions include the ability for Advance installers to keep track of and use their credits, full contact details for key Vaillant departments, and an area where installers can sign up to the Advance programme. Mark Derbyshire, Vaillant Commercial Director, commented, “At Vaillant we are committed
to providing real business benefits and tools to all of our customers, which is why we are delighted to be enhancing the support we can offer to installers both in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. “By introducing our new dedicated service line in the Republic of Ireland and enhanced masterTEC app for Advance installers in Northern Ireland, we are able to provide our customers with all of the technical, administration and sales tools that they need on site, at the touch of a button. “In addition to digital versions of our full suite of sales and technical literature, the app features a savings calculator for installers to use when guiding customers through the purchase decision, and – for Advance installers - the ability to automate much of the registration process. “We encourage all of our customers to take advantage of our new offerings to see how we can help them to maximise their working day.” Installers in Northern Ireland can now download the masterTEC app from the Apple App Store by searching for ‘Vaillant masterTEC’ whilst technical support and advice is available to installers in the Republic of Ireland by calling Vaillant’s technical team on 015360827 for installation and servicing support. OFTEC IRELAND NEWS... PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE FINDS OUT WHAT THE HARD WORKING TEAM AT OFTEC HAVE BEEN UP TO ON BEHALF OF THE OIL HEATING AND COOKING INDUSTRY…
OFTEC helps secure £2million extension to boiler replacement scheme
O
FTEC and its local members were among those organisations in Northern Ireland that called for an extension of the highly successful Boiler Replacement Scheme and was therefore delighted when, in March, Social Development Minister, Mervyn Storey, announced a cash injection of £2million to extend the initiative for another year. This is good news for both Northern Ireland householders and the plumbing and heating industry, as the scheme had been due to come to an end on March 31. Since the scheme was launched in September 2012, almost 20,000 boilers have been replaced, and more than 2,000 installers have carried out installation work, which has helped to boost the industry and the wider economy. OFTEC registered technicians have seen a strong uptake, with an overwhelming response from local householders and a big seal of approval in particular for condensing oil boilers, representing over 70% of those new boilers installed to date. David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland Manager commented, “This is a great opportunity for local installers. Over the last two years
T
the scheme, managed by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, has been very successful and it is significant that the majority installed are new condensing oil boilers, which reduce energy costs and improve energy efficiency.” The DSD initiative also continues to benefit local technicians who are undertaking boiler installation work. It is important to note that by advising your customers to switch to a modern oil condensing boiler, they could save over £200 per annum in oil costs.
Deadline looms on control of pollution regulations for commercial oil tanks
O
FTEC is urging commercial operators to ensure that their oil tanks meet the requirements of the Control of Pollution (Commercial Oil Storage) Regulations, Northern Ireland, which initially came into effect on March 20, 2010. Many may be at risk from a hefty fine of up to £20,000 by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, if their oil storage does not comply. The regulations require secondary containment (bunding) to be provided to all nondomestic oil storage tanks above 200 litres capacity or above 3,500 litres capacity if domestic by December 31, 2015. David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland Manager, said, “Transitional arrangements have been in place for almost five years, and as the deadline looms we are keen to ensure that commercial operators are aware of their requirements and that they can rely on an OFTEC registered technician to assess and provide advice what is needed to make their existing oil storage comply with the regulations.” Registered technicians are advised to contact their commercial customers as soon as possible to ensure they are compliant.

Energy usage data is just a click away with Quadlog
C
&F Quadrant’s Quadlog is continuing to prove hugely successful in both the public and private sector. Providing an easy yet effective method of monitoring energy and water usage, Quadlog has been specifically designed to analyse data in a clear and simple format, allowing customers to have an understanding of their consumption patterns, so that corrective measure can be implemented to ensure immediate savings. This innovative hardware and software solution has already helped numerous organisations reconfigure their energy usage and, in some instances, highlight unnecessary wastage. This has been particularly effective in sourcing issues during set ‘alarm’ periods when buildings are not occupied, with waste caused by, for example, leaking taps or wrongly programmed heat controls, being highlighted thanks to Quadlog’s monitoring and reporting systems. Key to this is how end-users, such as building maintenance officers or facilities

ADVANTAGES • Monitor your energy and water consumption and use the data to make cost-cutting savings. • Software allows data to be visualised to highlight consumption, cost and emissions. • Day+1 data collected every 30 minutes, keeping you up-to-date with the latest information. • Safe and secure accessibility from any computer with an internet connection. • Machine-to-machine data means that Quadlog links to the strongest signal in each area. • Dedicated service provides site surveys, hardware installation and secure data storage and visualisation. • Energy Services Team monitors data for anomalies. • Data access can be controlled at various levels, ranging from the supplier and regional office through to key clients.
WATER MONITORING management companies as well as the building’s owners, receive the information. All the energy usage data collected by Quadlog can be easily accessed through a secure website, with customers able to use their own dedicated username and password. The consumption data is securely stored on C&F Quadrant’s own servers and is automatically updated with results. These updates are compiled in easy-toread reports highlighting the levels of energy usage for the allotted time period. As more and more data is collated, reports will also include comparable data from previous months and years. As well as monitoring energy consumption, this data can also be used to compare your energy and water usage with your bills and, where required, to collate accurate CO2 usage levels for companies who have to pay a CO2 levy. Data can be displayed in various time periods and can be viewed as kWh, cost or KgCO2. Monthly and cumulative monthly data graphs are also available with the option to set a percentage target based on
last year’s consumption, which is updated automatically, so you can see how you are performing against last year. Quadlog is a cost-effective solution that is suitable for a range of projects, including hospitals/healthcare, retail, education, manufacturing and commercial premises. Quadlog is already successful working within a number of education and health estates, with the system working across multiple buildings. The first private sector clients have recently had Quadlog installed in their buildings and have already reported savings based on the data collated. All Quadlog installations are carried out by C&F Quadrant’s competent engineering team, meaning customers can be assured that the installation is carried out safely and that the system is correctly configured to provide the essential information. When working with gas, the C&F team has been trained to work within Zone 0 hazardous areas. Joule ireland showcases the company’s manufacturing prowess with the design and development of a new solar dynamic hot water cylinder...
HeatBank - the dynamic solar solution
J
oule Ireland has launched a new ground breaking hot water solution that provides a complete, all-in-one cylinder package for installers. HeatBank is a hybrid solar dynamic hot water cylinder. An innovative solution to meet hot water needs, it is suitable for both domestic and commercial applications. Developed and manufactured by Joule Ireland, HeatBank has been specifically designed to provide the highest levels of performance to meet the end-user’s hot water requirements for just €0.77 per day. However, from an installer’s viewpoint, the HeatBank cylinder is a dream to work with. This stainless steel cylinder is suitable for both vented and pressurised systems and, thanks to its compact size, it is easy to handle. However, Joule Ireland has also taken into consideration the challenges that installers face when installing hot water systems. With this in mind, the company has created a solution that is as easy to install as any standard hot water cylinder. To begin with, there isn’t any requirement for roofing works. This is because the engineers at Joule Ireland worked tirelessly to package all the system components within the actual cylinder, thus massively reducing installation times. The unit is also pre-charged and precommissioned in the Joule Ireland factory, eliminating any additional headaches for installers. Other advantages of HeatBank include: • • • • • • •
25 year warranty Hot water needs for just €0.77/day 430% efficiency Compact size Easy to install Stainless steel cylinder Suitable for vented and pressurised systems
The innovative features of the HeatBank cylinder once again highlight how Joule Ireland continues to place a focus on developing solutions that meet the needs of both installers and end-users. “From a design and running cost perspective,

A look at the work by Maurice Stevenson Ltd and the mechanical team during the restoration of this National Trust property…
Meticulous care and attention at Mount Stewart
he restoration of any building offers a series of challenges, but when you are working on a project that is in the public eye, the scrutiny is ten-fold. Throughout the restoration of Mount Stewart House, the National Trust property remained open to the public, with the construction team – including mechanical contractor, Maurice Stevenson Ltd – becoming a tourist attraction in their own right. The painstaking restoration of the Grade A Listed National Trust property aimed to restore the elegance and charm of the house when it was the home of the 7th Marchioness Edith, Lady Londonderry and her family in the early 20th Century. However, for Maurice Stevenson Ltd the challenge was to find the perfect balance between remaining true to the original building while also introducing some of the latest technology. The company’s role was not just focused on the provision of heating and hot water for the building but also on

systems to control the temperature within each room in order to protect the priceless items. As a heritage project, the building itself also offered a series of challenges, with the company having to carry out work in several phases, all with meticulous care. To begin with, limited space for pipework and duct routing, alongside the electrical services installation, meant the works within the building were complex. But Maurice Stevenson Ltd took the lead in services coordination and, through the use of the company’s 3D modelling software, the team was able to mitigate any issues before the works commenced on site. The company carried out detailed surveys in advance to understand the existing services installations, while also putting in place a series of contingency plans to put systems back into operation, if required. This process was further assisted by a strict impact assessment to pre-plan shutdowns, which was also implemented

within Maurice Stevenson Ltd’s permit to work system. The project consisted of a LTHW heating upgrade together with new mechanical ventilation systems throughout. The air plant was selected with the emphasis on energy efficiency, and the BEMS installation was tailored to ensure plant was constantly monitored and only enabled when environmental conditions dictated. This was particularly important, as conditions had to be carefully regulated to protect the various artefacts. As the building remained operational, Maurice Stevenson Ltd carried out a strict impact assessment to pre-plan shutdowns. This planning process was backed up by best practice techniques aimed at maintaining quality. Peter Devlin, Site Engineer, Maurice Stevenson Ltd, said, “Training also played an important part in this and we attended workshops with the specified manufacturers of plant and materials for
the project. This gave us the opportunity to provide input on installation methods and techniques and allowed us to collectively agree on procedures to ensure installation excellence.” Maurice Stevenson Ltd also carried out a detailed commissioning process on the project. “It was our view that commissioning actually started on day one of the project,” added Peter. “Our Contracts Manager together with our Site Foreman devised a detailed commissioning programme that systematically scheduled the various mechanical installations with timescales identified against each item. The works were certified in a phased approach above and below ceilings, and the client was invited to site at an early stage to witness all elements of commissioning. “This is all part of the overall service we provide and we are delighted to have been able to showcase this on such a prestigious project as Mount Stewart.”

UNDERFLOOR HEATING MOUNT STEWART rESTORATION
UNDERFLOOR HEATING SPECIALISTS ADD MOUNT STEWART TO A PRESTIGIOUS LIST OF NATIONAL TRUST PROJECTS COMPLETED BY THE COMPANY...
Willis Heating & Plumbing is up to the challenge
W
hen you have been in business for over 125 years, new challenges can be hard to come by so it is ironic that it was a heritage project that put Willis Heating & Plumbing to the test. “From both a design and installation point of view we were really put to the test at Mount Stewart,” explained Ian Steele, Director at Willis Heating & Plumbing. “There was never an option to install an underfloor heating system using screed while the flooring itself wasn’t your standard joist set-up so we had to be creative.” These design issues were matched by installation challenges that included having to locate the UFH manifolds some distance away from the rooms the
systems operated in while also having to contend with limited accessibility and space. All this was on top of having to work within a heritage project and the challenges this brings. To overcome these issues, Willis Heating & Plumbing utilised the advantages of Uponor’s heat emission plates. This product range has been specifically designed for timber floor applications and the system provides a lightweight design combined with a shallow construction, making it perfect for projects of this kind. The success of this project marks another National Trust project for Willis Heating & Plumbing, with the company having worked on Temple Of The Winds, Springhill Barn, Casteward, and the award-winning Giant’s Causeway Visitors’ Centre.

Altecnic launches Pressure Independent Control Valves
A
ltecnic continues to demonstrate the company’s on-going commitment to product development with the launch of a new range of pressure independent control valves. The Series 145 Pressure Independent Control Valve (PICV) provides the perfect balance between straightforward installation and performance. It is a device composed of an automatic flow rate regulator and a control valve with actuator. The Series 145 PICV can adjust flow rate and keep it constant in the presence of changing differential pressure conditions of the circuit in which it is installed. It is able to maintain the Iow rate of the thermal medium at a constant level, even when the differential pressure conditions in the hydraulic circuit to which it is fitted vary. The Iow rate value can be pre-set manually and/or controlled using an actuator. Flow rate is adjusted in two different ways: • manually on the automatic flow rate regulator, to restrict the maximum value, or • automatically by the control valve in combination with a proportional (0–10 V)
or ON/OFF actuator, in accordance with the thermal load requirements of the section of the circuit to be controlled.
The Series 145 PICV is supplied complete with connections for upstream and downstream pressure test ports for checking of operating conditions. The device can be used in air-conditioning systems. In terms of installation, it also offers versatility, regardless of whether it is being used with an actuator or not. To begin with, the easy-to-install valve features reduced dimensions and compact lines to make it easier to handle. The Series 145 PICV has also been designed to function with a proportional linear actuator. When controlled by a regulator, the valve can modulate the flow rate in accordance with the system thermal load. As an alternative to a proportional linear actuator, the valve can also be controlled with an On/Off type thermoelectric actuator for simpler temperature control logic. The valve without actuator can be installed in any position while, with an actuator fitted, it can be installed in any position except upside
down. The Series 145 PICV also includes the latest materials to ensure the highest performance standards. The valve body and headwork (2) are made of a dezincification resistant alloy while the springs, control stem and piston are in stainless steel. The use of these materials prevents corrosion while guaranteeing accuracy and reliable performance over time. The materials are also compatible with glycols and additives, which are often used in the circuits of air-conditioning systems. Gary Perry, Technical Director at Altecnic, commented, “We remain committed to bringing new innovations and products to the market, and the launch of the Caleffi Pressure Independent Control Valves. “By combining high quality materials with our vast industry experience, we are able to design products that meet the needs of the industry, both in terms of speed and ease of installation and thereby deliver the high standards of performance that customers expect from the Altecnic brand.” T: (NI) 01785 218208 or (RoI) 0044 1785 218208. Integrating old and new technology to save on fuel bills
I
t is predicted that the use of central heating plants and associated technology will be an area of focus for local authorities and social housing associations in a bid to reach energy-saving targets and prevent more people entering fuel poverty – and installers are set to play a huge part in not only fitting, but also educating customers benefitting from these systems. The traditional method primarily chosen for multi-occupancy or district heating has been through decentralised systems with individual gas-fired boilers but, while this system is effective, it can be prone to many problems. Centralised district heating schemes are increasingly being recognised as an alternative that can provide many benefits for customers and property owners in addressing these problems and fuel poverty. As a district or central heating system delivers heat and hot water to more than one building or dwelling in which the heat comes from a central source, a variety of power generation or renewable energy sources can be used, such as biomass or wastes. Ideal projects for district heating are high-rise buildings, dense urban areas with high and low-rise housing currently using electric heating or an existing heat network, as well as public buildings such as hospitals, universities, office blocks, and new-build urban developments, promoting the code for sustainable homes. These systems are now realising the benefits of an integrated HIU which provides optimum fuel efficiency and end-user comfort. In general, HIUs connect individual units to a heat network with a centralised heat source, providing the space heating or domestic hot water requirements whilst helping to balance the network. They can be used in conjunction with the latest data capture technology, which allows smart reading of individual energy and water

usage, giving more precise billing control to consumers. The development of HIUs has revolutionised the approach to delivering heat and hot water and, while not a new concept, the latest products from Pegler Yorkshire offer a range of features that leave many older systems looking obsolete, including a ‘no demand no flow’ solution. The latest designs of HIUs facilitate a balanced system that delivers consistent performance, irrespective of variation in hot water demands or how far the units are from the plant room. Used in combination with a CHP, these HIUs offer many benefits over decentralised systems, such as improved energy efficiency, while also allowing the integration of data monitoring. Customers will benefit from in-home displays which provide live energy consumption statistics, allowing them to see and understand their own energy usage. Furthermore, the new range of HIUs by Pegler Yorkshire now provides a simple selection process. There are three types available, suitable for all applications, and all provide installers with ease of fitting and maintenance.
CONTROL While this technology continues to grow, there is still a need for additional forms of energy control. With a reported 11 million homes missing out on energy savings due to inadequate heating controls, the importance of British-made TRVs and programmable TRVs cannot be overlooked. These are easily integrated within a domestic heating system, whether stand-alone or delivered as
part of a central heating plant. It is essential for the future of energy reduction in the UK that installers have knowledge and understanding of how to save energy and integrate devices, products and systems with whatever central heating system they are installing. In support of this, BEAMA has launched ‘Control Your Home’ campaign, encouraging the heating industry to work together to help consumers reduce their heating bills through better control of their heating. The campaign offers information that will support installers when advising their customers to fit controls. ompelling new research commissioned by ADEY Professional Heating Solutions reinforces the case for magnetic filtration as the most effective means of filtration involved in maintaining and protecting commercial heating systems. A 12-month study undertaken by the UK’s leading manufacturer of the Queen’s awardwinning MagnaClean filter, has just been released to the heating sector. It shows significant performance benefits in terms of sludge/magnetite capture and energy savings when compared with conventional methods of filtration for commercial systems. Tests compared MagnaClean with a dirt separator and basket filter. Results show ADEY’s MagnaClean Commercial filter is up to 80% more effective in capturing damaging magnetite system sludge than these other forms of filtration, and at least 30% more energy efficient. “We’ve been developing this technology for more than a decade, and while the wider heating sector is now embracing magnetic filtration as best practice, commercial

heating specifiers have been calling for detailed evidence to support our claims,” explained ADEY’s Business Development Consultant, Peter Sullivan. An independent consultant designed and built a test rig to carry out the research, which has taken more than a year and cost nearly £100,000. Results show that a 2” MagnaClean collected 1.52kg of magnetite during a two-hour cycle at a flow rate of 27m3/ hr. By comparison, a 2” basket filter with an 80-mesh basket collected just 0.02kg, while a comparable dirt separator collected 0.31kg of magnetite under the same flow conditions. In a further highly significant finding, the pressure loss across the fully laden MagnaClean Commercial filter was 53.8% and 68.1% more effective than the dirt separator and basket filter respectively. g The installation of a MagnaClean Commercial filter is paying dividends at Fairfield Health Club in Bedfordshire, part of the Bannatyne’s fitness empire. When two of the club’s large boilers broke down, an emergency replacement was required while all facilities remained in use. Although two new ACV 230kw boilers were installed seamlessly, cleaning the entire 6,000 litre heating system beforehand was impossible without huge disruption to members. Without effective maintenance, this would leave the new boilers at risk of immediate corrosion from dirt already inside the system, potentially causing costly damage in the longer term and limiting their lifespan. A partial system flush was carried out within the plant room and a good quality chemical protector, ADEY’s MC1 Protector, was added to help prevent corrosion and limescale deposition. Despite already having a dirt and air separator installed on the flow, magnetic and non-magnetic debris was still passing through the system. As part of an ongoing preventative approach to maintenance, a MagnaClean Commercial was installed to capture virtually 100% of system debris, preventing it from circulation. After just one month, MagnaClean Commercial captured and removed significant levels of black iron oxide sludge and debris from the system - far more than expected. This prevented damage to the new boilers without the need for any disruptive maintenance. The magnetic filter continues to provide ongoing preventative maintenance.

NEIL GAFFNEY, MANAGING DIRECTOR, VOKÈRA IRELAND OFFERS ADVICE ON HOW TO SECURE CUSTOMER LOYALTY…
Rewarding loyalty L oyalty is important to every business. Making sure your customers return and recommend your services is an objective many companies endeavour to meet. So how do you engage with your customers and secure their loyalty? One of the best ways is by developing and running a wideranging loyalty scheme. In our view, a successful loyalty scheme is about supporting and strengthening an existing business relationship with customers. We believe that the more relevant the interaction we have with our customers, the more we can help them, and the more they will enjoy working with Vokèra. This is why we have launched our new Affinity loyalty scheme across Ireland. The aim of the Vokèra Affinity scheme is to help installers and make their everyday working lives easier. By signing-up for the scheme, installers not only receive points for their Vokèra purchases, but they can also register a Vokèra boiler for warranty and register for their Affinity points by completing just one online form using the codes on the Affinity leaflet in the boiler box there’s no paperwork. In recent years, business practice has changed for installers, and mobile

technology is having a huge impact on our personal and our business lives. Research we conducted revealed that 97% of installers have smart phones and 77% use installer-focused apps. This development in technology and access means many installers are now operating in an ‘always-on’ business world. Our research told us that this should be reflected in the design of Affinity, so that the scheme could be easy to access, 24/7, from whichever device they were using. As a result, the backbone to Affinity is a new platform of accessibility that allows our customers to engage quickly and easily with the scheme, bringing them closer to Vokèra and the business benefits on offer. The new Affinity scheme ensures that we keep pace with these changes, enabling faster and more direct communication with our customers via the dedicated Affinity website or the new Vokèra app, available on iOS and Android devices. Whether you are looking at the Affinity website or Vokèra app, the layout is the same and extremely easy to use. The survey involved almost every public body in Northern Ireland – including local councils, education boards and NHS trusts - and found that whilst all public bodies in Northern Ireland claim to pay their tier 1 contractors within 30 days, there is a lack of clarity as to when the 30 days starts from. There is evidence suggesting that the 30 days commences from the date when payments were authorised. One firm in Northern Ireland had to wait 252 days for payment for payment to be authorised. Just over 50% of public bodies surveyed do not have measures in place to track payment performance in the supply chain – and 85% hold monies back from payments (known as retentions). Almost 75% of public bodies admit to using cash raised by retentions to supplement their working capital or as an investment pot. Approximately £60 million is being withheld by the public sector in Northern Ireland from – for the most part – small firms. In light of the findings, SEC Group Northern Ireland has developed a six point action plan to improve payment and prequalification practice. W: www.secgroup.org.uk

The future of the Gas Entry Tariff Regime
T
he Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) has published its draft decision on the future of the Gas Entry Tariff Regime in Ireland. The report sets out the regulator’s ‘minded to’ decision regarding the gas tariffing methodology to be applied from this October. According to the CER, this new methodology will calculate the network transmission tariffs for entry onto and exit off the Gas Networks Ireland system. It will replace the current regime which recovers the costs associated with the interconnectors separately from the assets at Kinsale and the onshore part of the system. The Draft Decision also includes a proposal to allow a discount entry from storage facilities in Ireland.

Addressing the issue of movement, caused by natural settlement and drying out of building materials, the CM Seal Tanking Kit provides a waterproofing solution that ensures the shower enclosure or showering area above the bath remains 100% waterproof. Not only does this product seal the ledge of the shower tray or bath in the event of movement, it also waterproofs the entire walls above the shower tray or bath, which effectively ties the shower tray or bath to the wall, ensuring that any water ingress in the showering area finds its way into the tray or bath. ouseholders in the Republic of Ireland who want to undertake energy efficiency improvements can now benefit from a boost in the level of grants available under the Better Energy Homes Scheme. The new grants are available for wall insulation (cavity, internal and external), attic insulation, solar thermal heating, high efficiency (> 90%) gas or oil-fired boilers with heating controls and heating control upgrades. The grants are available to privately owned homes constructed before 2006. Homeowners must use a SEAI registered contractor and applications must be approved by SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) before works commence. “We’re encouraging more contractors to register or come back to the programme,” said John Randles, Head of Delivery at SEAI. “To qualify, contractors need to submit tax clearance certificate, insurance details and a completed registration form – details of which are available on our website.” T: (RoI) or 1850 927 000 E: betterenergyhomes@seai.ie W: www.seai.ie/betterenergyhomes

A new initiative to help unemployed construction workers get jobs in the sector is also aimed at boosting apprenticeships…
Plumbing apprentices on the rise
A
longside the Department of Social Protection, the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) has just launched a campaign that’s aimed at helping unemployed construction workers find employment in the sector. The campaign will highlight the numerous services the Department provides to businesses to boost employment, while firms will also be put in contact with experienced workers keen to get back into the industry. Former construction workers still make up the largest segment of unemployed people in Ireland. The latest reports show there are approximately 80,000 jobseekers from the construction industry on the Live Register, 66% of whom have been unemployed for one year or longer. Programmes including JobsPlus, Jobs Ireland Recruitment Service, JobBridge and EmployAbility Service are now available (at no cost) to help employers take on new, experienced workers and buck this trend. It’s no surprise that the number of people entering into construction apprenticeships over the past few years has been alarmingly low. The good news is that the most recent statistics paint a more optimistic picture, with numbers most definitely on the rise. In 2014 the number of new apprentices rose by 660, with over 2,100 new apprenticeship registrations taking place in the course of the year. The big increases were in plumbing, electrical and carpentry; plumbing experienced an increase of 77 apprentices, growing by 32% to 318. “These apprentices are in domestic plumbing and also in the larger M&E companies,” said CIF Director General Tom Parlon. “We’re constantly encouraging our members to take on apprentices and it’s good to see the numbers growing. The industry will need to see that increase continue in 2015 and beyond if we’re to meet the expected demand for construction activity in the coming years.” The CIF is currently pushing for a new incentive which would further boost the numbers of apprenticeships in the industry. Tom added, “We’re hoping that the JobsPlus programme will soon include incentives for employers to take on more apprentices. A lot of the people likely to take on apprentices are smaller players and if our

social house building ramps up, as promised by the government, then we’re certainly going to need those skills.” According to Tom, the typical small firm in the construction sector is reluctant to take on apprentices. “An employer will take on an apprentice for four years but the serious lack of confidence in the sector means there’s a reluctance there to take on someone for four weeks never mind four years. So to encourage the smaller player, we’re hoping that an incentive will be provided which would mean that for the first two years an employer would get between e7,500 and e10,000 if they take on an apprentice. That’s a very attractive incentive and would, we believe, help to further boost numbers and drive the sector. We’re pushing very strongly for this to go through.” Tom believes the industry will benefit from new blood and will perhaps create new ways of working. “We feel that a lot of the skilled people in the sector are getting that bit older. New apprentices are a great way of freshening up the industry. We also feel
that there’s been a substantial bias against trades and skills over the past few years. “The industry took a hiding in terms of jobs and activity levels and its reputation was battered. It wasn’t deemed an attractive place to work. I think that’s changing now and already we’re seeing a big increase in the numbers applying to do construction related courses from the CAO.” The latest figures show that employment in the construction industry grew by a total of 13,100 in 2014, meaning construction was responsible for 45% of the additional jobs created throughout the economy. With the sector now expected to enter a period of sustained growth, the CIF is encouraging construction firms in Ireland to start taking on apprentices again and indeed workers who wish to return to the sector. Tom said, “We need to futureproof our sector. It’s crucial that the industry plays its part in ensuring skilled workers are there to meet the demand we fully expect to see.” T: (RoI) 01 406 6000 or (NI) 00353 1 406 6000 E: contact@cif.ie W: www.cif.ie

APPROVED INSTALLER NETWORK SYSTEM FROM SATURN OFFERS EXTENSIVE TRAINING AND SUPPORT…
First-class installer training service from Saturn Recent installer training carried out by Saturn Heating.
S
aturn Heating products are exclusively distributed through a network of approved professional installers throughout the UK and Ireland, and to help ensure a high quality installation and maintenance service through the life of the product, the company provides extensive training to installers. The Saturn Approved Installer Network system offers definite advantages to installers, with leads generated by Saturn Heating passed on to local installers. It also allows Saturn to control and maintain the high standards the company is renowned for, not only in its product range, but also in installation and servicing, which also benefits home-owners. To become an installer on the Saturn Approved Installer Network, a specific training course must be completed. On qualifying, they will then be approved to install, commission and service the Saturn NHC stainless steel oil boiler range. “By insisting on our own training, we can offer added assurance to home-owners that they will receive a high quality installation service that we can stand by, and also a full service back-up throughout the life of the product,” said Stephen Duffy, of Saturn Heating. As part of a global organisation, Saturn Heating has been making its mark with
heating professionals since 1978, manufacturing for markets across Europe, Asia, America, Canada and Russia. A key selling point for installers, when it comes to choosing Saturn Heating products, has been the company’s launch of Ireland’s first range of all stainless steel condensing oil boilers. The NHC boiler uses an all stainless steel condensing heat exchanger – the only one of its kind available on the market today. Other innovative features include intuitive remote control with multiple management functions to control the boiler from within the home, providing simple and efficient management. “Eco-friendly and highly efficient, it’s no surprise the NHC stainless steel condensing boiler is popular on such a global scale,” said Stephen. “Our NHC boiler is unique. We are confident that it will save home-owners money and energy, in addition to enjoying a long service life. It’s the only boiler that includes a neutralising filter and trap to treat the corrosive condensate.” T: (RoI) 042 969 2032 or (NI) 00353 42 969 2032 E: info@saturnheating.net W: www.saturnheating.net

GAS SAFE REGISTER IS COMMITTED TO FINDING AND COMBATTING ILLEGAL GAS WORK…
The benefits of being Gas Safe Registered
G
as Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are registered to work safely and legally on boilers, cookers, fires and all other gas appliances. Having replaced CORGI gas registration in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, its main focus is to improve and maintain gas safety to the highest standards. Gas Safe Register works to protect the public from unsafe gas work through a dedicated national investigations team, tracking down individuals working illegally; educating consumers and raising awareness of gas safety; investigating reports of unsafe gas work; and regular inspections of Gas Safe registered engineers. By being a registered engineer, your status is evidence to your customers that you are working legally and that you are competent and safe to work with gas. It also means that you have an increased business profile, as
Gas Safe Register receives over a million enquiries a year from customers looking for registered engineers. As a registered engineer, you receive complete online support for you to manage your registration and renewals, and access updates and safety alerts. Furthermore, you have direct access to the Register’s complaints and appeals procedures. To register, you need the relevant qualifications and evidence of your competence for the areas of gas you wish to work on. Unlike CORGI, Gas Safe Register is not responsible for the development and setting of competence for registered gas engineers. Instead, Gas Safe Register receives confirmation from certification bodies when you have passed your competence assessments – as defined and set by industry – and then puts you on the register so you can legally work with gas.
“Gas Safe Register receives over a million enquiries a year from customers looking for registered engineers.” It is Gas Safe Register’s role to ensure that engineers apply their skills – its team of inspectors check that engineers’ work is safe and has been completed in accordance with industry standards. ErP CHANGES
JEFF HOUSE, REGULATORY MARKETING MANAGER AT BAXI, EXPLAINS HOW THE NEW ERP DIRECTIVE WILL AFFECT INSTALLERS…
ErPthe countdown is on The European Union’s Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives for space heaters and combi-space heaters (more commonly known as the Energy-related Products – or ErP – Directive) will come into force across Europe on September 26. ErP aims to drive carbon emission reductions and help us achieve our 2050 targets, in turn creating a more sustainable, efficient future for all. And with heating being the largest energy user in the home, it‘s easy to see why it is needed. In short, the legislation is made up of two parts - the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Regulations for Lot 1 (space heaters and combi space heaters) and Lot 2 (water heaters). This means two things:
1
Ecodesign will ensure any product that doesn’t meet certain efficiency requirements will not get a CE mark and will therefore not be legally available for sale in the UK.
2
The Energy Labelling requirement will mean that each space and water heater will come with an efficiency rating and label, from A+++ to G. When it comes to gas boilers, the scope is limited to domestic and commercial products with an output lower than 400kW. All boilers supplied by the manufacturer after August 1 must be ErP compliant, and from September 26 they must be supplied with an energy label and fiche. One of the biggest changes will be the labelling system, requiring an energy label to be supplied with the boiler and also a label when a whole system is installed, depending on the components used (ie boiler, heat pump, controls, etc). The installer will need to calculate an efficiency figure for an entire heating system, inclusive of the boiler, heating controls and water heater, to generate a system efficiency figure. This must then be added onto the ‘package label’ to complete the installation.
“The directive will provide a greater opportunity to sell packages of heating systems, rather than just a single element.” www.plumbingmag.com
FOLLOW US ON:
Jeff House.
This means a change in process for the installer, which should also be seen as an opportunity. The directive will provide a greater opportunity to sell packages of heating systems, rather than just a single element – for example, selling controls and added eco-features to provide consumers with an optimum-efficient solution. Installers will need to fully understand what they can and cannot install legally under ErP, as well as the installation requirements of high-efficiency products. They will also need to go beyond the traditional remit to become more of an ‘energy advisor’, providing informed and extensive advice to customers on the most suitable and efficient solutions which are compliant and will help them the save most energy.
THE FUTURE ErP will bring with it new challenges for everyone, and mean new things to learn and extra responsibility for the busy installer. However, it will also bring many positives – making it easier to see which products are most efficient, encouraging consumers to choose more efficient options and, in turn, bringing new opportunities for the installer. The good news is that many leading manufacturers are already one step ahead and have plans in place to help installers each step at the way. Baxi has been including ErP in its training sessions since last year, in a bid to help installers understand and be prepared. So, with less than six months to ErP, here at Baxi we’re ready – the question is, are you? The CIRI registration board.
It’s voluntary right now, but the Construction Industry Register Ireland (CIRI) is set to become mandatory. Chairman, Hank Fogarty explains the benefits of registering and why firms should be thinking about it now rather than later…
CIRI – are you signed up?
S
ince its establishment in April 2014, over 700 companies have signed up to the Construction Industry Register Ireland (CIRI). The benefits of CIRI have been well documented; companies who register are proclaiming their competency and underlining their expertise in delivering quality services to the industry, while at the same time participating in a new way of operating within the Irish construction sector. The register - which is currently voluntary but is set to become statutory within 12 months - requires construction companies, sole traders and builders to comply with the building regulations and an industry code of ethics. To qualify, firms must prove they are tax compliant and they must also meet the health and safety regulations relating to the construction industry. Companies must also commit to undertaking continuous professional development and attend a CIRI induction course. “People seem to accept that regulation is a good thing and that there should be bars to entry to our industry,” said Hank Fogarty, Chairman of CIRI. “The only possibly negative reaction I would expect from firms is in relation to CPD requirements, but education has to be a big part of it. It’s essential that we improve the efficiency of the industry.” All firms involved in the construction of a

project - be it contractor or heating and plumbing merchants - are being encouraged to sign up and begin the process now, rather than waiting until it becomes mandatory. “They are the companies who will be signing the ancillary certs, so the sooner they understand the process and get up to speed with it, the better it’ll be for them,” said Hank. “We think that, by the end of this year, any meaningful player in the sector will be registered on CIRI or will have isolated themselves by their absence.” So how does a firm go about registering? The first port of call is the CIRI website. Hank explained, “The application form is available online. The process takes longer than people imagine, certain criteria must be met. A safety statement and a tax certificate must be provided. Firms must prove that they are registered for VAT and they must have a minimum level of insurance.” Currently, over 1400 people have commenced the process. “We’re finding that some firms are submitting their applications and they’re claiming a bit more of a project than they were actually involved in,” Hank continued. “The guy who hung the doors at Lansdowne Road could claim he was involved in the build. To counter this, we’re constantly revising the application form so we know a firm’s exact participation in a project.” Firms will need to re-register 12 months
after their initial registration. If there are no material changes to an organisation, the process won’t be as rigorous. After three years, a total review will be required. The biggest mistake that companies are making when undergoing the process is not attending their inductions. Firms are also falling down when it comes to describing projects they’ve been involved in. Hank added, “Until companies have their certificate of induction, we can’t register them. Some companies find it very difficult to describe a project they’ve been involved in, in terms that we can understand. An inability to articulate their skills and expertise is a problem, so we’re sending these firms away to complete the form properly.” Registering your firm on CIRI costs e600. According to Hank, design offices would like to have all their sub-contractors and contractors registered on the basis that it is evidence they have checked their competency. He concluded, “So already, pressure is coming on small firms to make sure they’re on the register, or the architect won’t put them on their tender list. That’s going to be a huge influencing factor, and that’s why firms need to register now or risk losing out on work going forward.” T: (RoI) 01 406 6094 or (NI) 00353 1 406 6094 W: www.ciri.ie

Robin Jackman, Sales Manager at Saniflo Ireland, talks about the attractive and not so attractive - products that, when combined, can create the dream bathroom…
How macerators and pumps help create clever bathroom designs
T
he ability to have a cloakroom, en suite or full bathroom anywhere a water supply can reach has completely changed the way we view bathroom design. This is all possible thanks to the introduction of macerators and pumps to the UK and Irish market, originally by Group SFA and now known as Saniflo. Without these macerators and pumps, far fewer home-owners would have been able to add value and convenience to their period dwelling. In addition, commercial applications allow hotels, guesthouses, public buildings, hospitals, care homes, schools, nightclubs and more to also create bathroom facilities almost anywhere on their premises. A macerator or pump is available that allows you to create a bathroom facility almost anywhere a water supply can reach. What’s more, all this is generally possible without major rework to floors, making the whole process fairly swift and smooth. Today there’s a wide range of macerators and pumps on the market, with some new additions from Saniflo coming during the next few months which will give even greater scope to commercial applications. In addition to the macerators and pumps which allow you to use any sanitary ware,

brassware, furniture and tiles, it’s also possible to create a bathroom anywhere a water supply can reach using a range of sanitary ware and shower trays and shower cubicles specifically designed for non-mains drainage facilities. Let’s look at a fairly typical domestic scenario. A family wants to convert a garage into a bedroom with en suite bathroom. The main water supply is easy to connect but the soil stack is on the other side of the property meaning direct access to mains drainage requires major heavy groundwork, which the family wants to avoid from a cost, time and hassle point of view. If the en suite is to contain a WC, basin and shower, for example, then there are multiple choices of Saniflo products that can serve the purpose perfectly. The Saniplus, for example, is a one-stopshop solution to creating the perfect en suite, including an inclusively designed en suite. This quiet macerator pump is a simple, quick solution that takes the waste from a WC, a wash basin and a power shower – and a bidet if required – and then pumps it through 22mm small-bore pipework, vertically up to 5 metres or horizontally up to 100 metres, or a lesser combination of both. This means there’s no obstacle if the

en suite you need to install is located on the other side of the property or at the bottom of a long garden. With the Saniplus, waste from the WC is dealt with automatically when the WC is flushed. Waste water is drained by gravity from the shower, bidet or basin to the Saniplus through inlets on either side of the unit. If you are creating an inclusively designed en suite then you can place the WC and the Saniplus anywhere in the room, giving you great scope for flexibility of product selection and bathroom design. A wide selection of downloadable brochures explaining all product information clearly in plain English is available on our website. In addition, our in-house technical team are there to give advice on installation and to help you identify the best product for the job whether it’s a pump, macerator or shower cubicle you are looking for. And if you need one, we have a nationwide network of official Saniflo engineers who are available to answer every query and provide the best aftercare on the market. he Powerbox’s simple design means it’s ideal for washrooms in high traffic areas such as airports, hospitals and hotels to offices and public institutions. The new product’s self-sustaining power model and low maintenance design also makes it perfect for projects where mains electricity is absent or unreliable; it also helps attain difficult to achieve green standards such as LEED, BREEAM and Estidama. Grohe’s technology uses the faucet’s own water flow to drive a turbine, concealed in a small box installed below the basin. This converts the energy from the flowing water into storable electric energy which then powers the faucet’s infrared function. Just 60 seconds of the water running delivers and stores enough energy to power the mixer for 24 hours. The electronic faucet only delivers the water required, thereby minimising waste. With seven possible settings, it can also be further tailored to meet the needs of the project and its users without wasting a drop.
SAVINGS The Powerbox is the most efficient power harvester in the business, with a storage capacity that allows 100 hours of use from just 260 seconds

of water flowing. No energy from the mains is required to power the unit, which means no electricity bills to pay. No mains electricity will, of course, cut bills, but the design of the product will also save on running costs. The Powerbox operates maintenance-free for 10 years and is simple and fast to install. According
to Modern Plant, all these benefits are also matched by design excellence. The Powerbox can be used with three different faucet styles – these include Grohe’s Europlus E, Europlus Cosmopolitan E and the Cold water fitting Euroeco Cosmopolitan E. POLYTHERM HEATING SYSTEMS HAVE 16 YEARS OF BESPOKE UNDERFLOOR HEATING DESIGN AND SUPPLY…
Polytherm at the forefront of design and innovation
P
olytherm Heating System was formed in 1999 from the success of the underfloor heating division of its parent company, Hevac Ltd. Since then Polytherm has continued to be at the forefront of underfloor heating design and innovation. For Polytherm staff, customer satisfaction is the primary goal. When the company receives plans from a home-owner, an installer, mechanical contractor, merchant, consultant engineer, or architect, Polytherm’s design engineers and CAD technicians will respond with an initial design and open a dialogue to find out what will best suit the project at hand. Once the team know these requirements, they produce mechanical and electrical drawings to match the final design. If assistance is required prior to installation, a site visit can be easily accommodated. Polytherm’s engineers are also available over the phone, if technical support is required, or if a customer has any questions about underfloor heating. Once the system is installed, a commissioning engineer is available to call out to the project.
ENERGY SAVING Since the introduction of the Building Energy Rating certification, everyone buying or renting property has become aware of the costs of heating that property. Using Polytherm Heating System’s custom designs, homeowners and building operators can benefit from reduced running costs. Using DEAP software, a 1,300ft² house using a heat pump as the primary heat source was able to achieve an A3 BER rating simply by using Polytherm underfloor heating. The same
Polytherm’s Heattrack low profile panel system.
house using a standard radiator system would attract a 25% efficiency penalty for space heating and fail Part L compliance. Polytherm systems get the most from your wet central heating systems, including oil, gas or solid fuel boilers and are excellent for typical installations where a mix of heat emitters are used, such as underfloor heating on the ground floor and radiators on the first floor. Polytherm’s underfloor heating system comes into its own when used with lowgrade temperature sources, like condensing boilers and heat pumps. As the system only requires a low-flow temperature between 35°C and 45°C, Polytherm can exploit the higher efficiencies that condensing boilers and heat pumps can achieve. Further savings can be achieved by using Polytherm controls. The company’s extensive range and knowledge of controls means that your home or place of business will always be at the temperature you desire. From dial thermostats to internetready smart controls, Polytherm has got the product for you. Its intelligent controllers learn the characteristics of your building, meaning no more cold floors in the morning, or high energy bills. In fact, using smart controls can save you up to 30% versus standard controls. For underfloor heating in existing buildings
where floor to ceiling height may be an issue for traditional systems, Polytherm offers Heatrack – a low profile panel system. This enables installation on joist floors and existing concrete floors, increasing the useable area within rooms by removing radiators from external walls.
Key factors for underfloor heating design • Polytherm’s Multilayer pipe is specifically manufactured for underfloor heating applications. • Polytherm’s engineers will select the correct manifold set-up for your heat source. • Polytherm’s engineers will design a solution based on the thermal resistance of the floor covering. • Polytherm’s underfloor heating takes advantage of radiated heat transfer so that lower, more comfortable room temperatures are utilised. • Polytherm’s underfloor heating system components are backed by the company’s guarantee, working together for ease of operation.

Uponor launches thinnest ever UFH system to heat up retrofit installations in record time…
Thinnest UFH system from Uponor
D
espite the fact underfloor heating (UFH) has been identified as the top ‘aspirational feature’ by homeowners*, installing it into existing properties has always proved to be a major obstacle for installers and end-users alike; with customers often having to sacrifice room height, or pay a premium to have floors re-laid. In order to address this issue, Uponor has launched its Minitec UFH system – the thinnest system on the market. With a finished installation height that can add as little as just two centimetres to any floor, Minitec can be quickly installed on top of existing screed or tile floors with minimal application preparation required. What’s more, the Minitec system’s proximity to the surface significantly reduces both floor heat-up times and temperature change, providing the same level of comfort at a much lower operating temperature compared to other retrofit heating systems. The water-based system can be fitted by just one installer and uses adhesive panels with raised foil naps and prepared grooves to guide the pipe loops, which can be laid at both 45° and 90° angles depending on requirement, across the floor. The pipe can simply be ‘clicked’ into place

by the individual installer, avoiding the need for any specialist stapling installation tools, and then connected to the manifold as with any traditional underfloor heating system. Self-adhesive edging strips in I and L profiles, as well as doorway mounting kits, are also included in all Minitec kits. Once laid, the system can be covered by a floor-levelling compound. As the adhesive tiles feature punched holes, the compound can be spread evenly and firmly bond with the foil. The entire installation is just 15mm in height and once the compound has dried, which could take as little as just 24 hours, then the required floor covering can be laid. Warren Smyth, Uponor’s Business Development Manager for Ireland, said, “Underfloor heating has finally shed its tag as a luxury product solely reserved for the newbuild properties. Given its low operational temperature requirements, it is one of the most energy efficient heating technologies on the market – especially if partnered with an air or ground-source heat pump – and homeowners are now realising the long-term cost saving options on offer, as well the added comfort factor. “However, retrofitting an underfloor heating system has typically presented a number of issues which nearly always result in either a
lengthy – and therefore costly – installation process, or a noticeable loss in room height. With Minitec, we’ve introduced a product that can be installed directly onto an existing floor by just one technician, and adds just two centimetres to the room’s floor height. “We believe Minitec will allow installers to embrace the rise in demand for retrofit UFH installations, but on a much better time scale. Similarly, existing home-owners will be able to enjoy the many benefits of a UFH system without the inconvenience of a long installation process or noticeable loss in room height.” Uponor’s Minitec system operates using 9.9 x 1.1mm PE-Xa pipe and 1120 x 720mm floor panels. Minitec is available from leading plumbing and heating merchants across the country. ANTON INTRODUCES NEW FIXED PRICE ANNUAL SERVICE COST AND EXPLAINS THE IMPORTANCE OF SERVICING AND CALIBRATING YOUR FGA…
Improved turnaround and customer satisfaction with Anton
A
nton is often asked why Flue Gas Analysers (FGAs) need an annual calibration. The reason is that your analyser is used to set up various appliances in your customers’ homes and work places. If they are not set up correctly, the appliances will not be running at their most fuel efficient or, worse still, they could be spilling high concentrations of potentially lethal Carbon Monoxide gas into their surroundings. The annual calibration of your FGA ensures that the tool you use to do this job is within specification and is as accurate as possible. The HHIC states in its guidance on using an FGA for the commissioning of newly installed appliances that this work should only be done using an analyser with an up-to-date calibration status and British Standards BS:7967 and BS EN:50379 both call for the same. Ask your Gas Safe Register or RGII Inspector if it’s okay to use an FGA outside of calibration and guess what he or she will tell you! In short, you should not be using a flue gas analyser without an in-date calibration certificate. Ever! Any work or reports carried out with an out-of-date FGA will be invalid and useless. Because of this, Anton has significantly invested in its flue gas analyser service department to provide customers with a

faster, more efficient and simple way to get their FGAs calibrated and serviced. It is also making the cost of servicing and calibrating your Anton flue gas analyser clearer and more cost-effective over the life of the instrument. Steve Couper, Anton’s General Manager, said, “The investment in our modern service department has meant we’ve been able to dramatically improve the turnaround times on our FGA servicing already, but we’ve found even bigger improvements in the time taken to return instruments to customers by removing the quotation process. “The biggest delays were due to the quotation process and gaining customer approval on the work to be done. Now, our new fixed price annual service cost means most instruments will be serviced and returned without the delay of quotations/ approvals. “This new simple pricing concept has many advantages - you know exactly what it will cost you to service and maintain each year and it reduces the time you are without your analyser each year. By servicing your instrument regularly, you ensure it is compliant and fit for purpose and that it retains its full five-year warranty.”
To help safeguard users of Anton FGAs from the risk of using an out-of-calibration instrument, Anton’s policy is for all its analysers to prevent use of the safety-critical FGA functions once the calibration due date has passed - ie the FGA functions of the analyser lock out once the calibration due date has passed. The instrument gives you a warning message on the start-up screen when it’s within one month of its calibration due date. The calibration due date is on the calibration label on the instrument and printed on every report, so you get plenty of warning to arrange to send the instrument back to Anton, drop in at your local merchant or send to one of the Anton Approved Service Centres to get it serviced annually. Steve added, “We feel this change to fixed price annual servicing is a really positive step to help support our customers, to give them great value when servicing their flue gas analysers. It also gives peace of mind and transparency regarding the ongoing maintenance costs, as well as improving the turnaround time to get the instruments back to the engineer who needs it most.” T: (NI) 0870 428 0075 or (RoI) 0044 870 428 0075 E: service@anton-group.com W: www.anton-group.com

Understanding all the figures
A
few months ago, HHIC celebrated 10 years of condensing boilers in the UK market, which now has over 16 million condensing boilers out of a total population of around 24 million - and 99% of all new domestic boilers are condensing. By coincidence, April 2015 was the first anniversary of Technical Bulletin TB143, requiring engineers to commission and service condensing boilers with approved, certified electronic Flue Gas Analysers (FGAs) and demonstrate their competence to use an FGA via CPA1 assessment (now incorporated in CCN1).
FAQS The three most frequently asked questions we receive as an FGA manufacturer relate to combustion ratio; typically:Q. What does ratio actually mean? A. Ratio is the relationship between Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) when these two gases are measured in a flue. Field-based research clearly demonstrates that there is less need for a full strip-down service (burner/combustion chamber in particular) on appliances with a ‘good’ ratio – but the final decision is always left to the competency of the engineer. However, ratio is not the full story. Professional engineers should know about other parameters displayed by modern FGAs to increase their confidence that an appliance will remain safe until its next inspection/service. You also need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use your skills and experience to assess each situation and the overall condition of the appliance and its installation. If in doubt, ask. An FGA cannot tell you that a boiler’s case
www.plumbingmag.com
FOLLOW US ON:
seals are cracked or perished, or if its condensate trap needs cleaning. Q. How is ratio calculated? A. Ratio is flue gas levels of Carbon Monoxide (CO) in parts per million (ppm) divided by flue gas levels of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in ppm (COppm/CO2ppm) – most FGAs calculate this automatically. Flue gas CO2 levels displayed in percentages are easily converted to ppm, as 1% CO2=10,000ppm. So, if a boiler emits 350ppm CO and 9% CO2 (90,000ppm), its ratio is 350/90,000=0.0039. Please remember that FGAs either directly measure Carbon Dioxide (CO2) or Oxygen (O2), calculating CO2 values from the fuel being used. FGAs measuring O2 must know which fuel is being used, so make sure you check its setting – when in doubt, ask. For example: an analyser measuring 5% oxygen will calculate CO2 readings as 9% for natural gas, 10.6% for LPG and 11.8% for light oil – big differences that might confuse you. Q. If ratio is within specification, should anything else be checked? A. For natural gas, TB143 requires that CO levels must be less than or equal to 350ppm and the combustion ratio must be less than or equal to 0.0040. However, you need to follow boiler manufacturers’ instruction manuals. They usually have lower CO and ratio limits than TB143 and some require you to take CO2 readings. Although TB143 doesn’t require CO2 levels to be measured, you must take care because if the boiler manufacturer’s instructions are not available, the following situation might occur - we previously explained that a gas boiler emitting 350ppm
CO and 9% CO2 (90,000 pm) has a ratio of 0.0039 (350/90,000) – in other words, close to TB143’s limit. If the same boiler emitted 350ppm CO with a displayed ratio of 0.0030, TB143 is satisfied, but CO2 levels would be 11.5%, perhaps 1.5% higher than required by its manufacturer. So what’s the problem? Most boiler manufacturers use excess air (λ) as a measure to ensure that enough oxygen (O2) is present for safe combustion under a wide range of operating conditions. Excess air is calculated by dividing oxygen in normal air (20.9%) by the sum of 20.9% minus O2 measured in flue gas then converted to a percentage – most FGAs calculate this automatically. For example, an analyser measuring 5% O2 in flue gas will calculate excess air as 31%. As 10% CO2, excess air is 18.9%, but at 11.5%, CO2 excess air is just 3.39%. Is this a big enough safety margin? Most appliance manufacturers would say not. The appliance might be too close to the tipping point where a small change in operating conditions could cause CO levels to rise dramatically with potentially disastrous results. Don’t take the risk – if in doubt, ask. To conclude, even if the ratio is within specification you should always look at actual CO2 and excess air levels calculated by your FGA to make sure the boiler is operating safely and within the specifications required by the manufacturer – if in doubt, ask. NOW MORE THAN EVER IT PAYS TO CONSIDER THE USED VAN OPTION…
Quality used vans from Bridge Commercials

hat’s the message from local van specialists, Bridge Commercials. But then there’s nothing new in that, it always has been the message! But as Director, Patrick Winter, explained, more and more individuals, and indeed companies, are paying attention. “And it’s not just the small and medium-sized companies that are taking advantage of the situation,” explained Patrick. “The larger companies are also going for the valueformoney option. In the last couple of weeks we have received an order for 22 used vans from a single source. “By opting for the quality used van option this company has saved themselves thousands and thousand of pounds. Even with a single van transaction you are talking major savings.” The change in buying habits has provided Bridge Commercials with a tremendous boost. “Our throughput is actually up 60% on the previous year,” confirmed Patrick. “When the recession first began to take hold sales were

greatly down for everyone as people just weren’t updating or replacing their vans. More was simply being asked of the vehicles that they owned. “But now the realisation seems to have hit home that the used van option is a quality move that provides major cost savings, and the demand for quality used vans is being further boosted by the recent hike in the price of new models available on the market. “The price of new vans has shot up quite considerably in the last few months and even companies who previously only ever bought new are reconsidering their position.” Patrick added, “As a company we specialise in supplying high quality vans in excellent condition. Knowing that each of our vehicles undergoes a rigorous servicing and
inspection process adds peace of mind as well as exceptional value!” So what’s proving most popular in terms of price range? “At the moment our customers are looking for quality used vans in the 6,000 to 10,000 price bracket,” said Patrick. “And the good news is we can deliver on that.” For further information contact Bridge Commercials by telephoning +44 (0)28 9268 9000 or log onto www.bridgecommercials.co.uk

our uninterrupted decades of work, dedicated to producing cutting-edge technology for water handling, are being celebrated by DAB Pumps this year with the launch of yet another exciting new product. These 40 years of innovation have culminated in the creation of Genix. Boasting exceptional reliability, it provides just the right solution where drainage of domestic appliances is required, but where no pipes can be installed, or when there are no gravity pipelines. Genix has been designed by DAB Pumps to reduce maintenance to a minimum and avoid the problems of having a bath whenever you like, but at who knows what cost and with how many problems. For 40 years, DAB Pumps has been synonymous with reliable technology for water handling and has created a system that ensures optimal comfort, both for installers and users. For installers, this product ensures easy access from the exterior to the motor enclosure, which is, in turn, simple to remove, as is the integrated electronic board and highly reliable and precise pressure switch. The motor shaft is also easily released by simply
removing a cap on the exterior. A fixing device facilitates installation, and a wide range of accessories can be supplied to simplify fitting, such as couplings, elbow connections and clamps. The tank is completely sealed and therefore leak-free. Genix has been designed to receive waste water from a WC combined with a wash basin (Model 110) and from a shower and bidet (Model 130), enabling the creation of a complete bathroom, wherever required. For users, DAB Pumps has worked with its engineers to minimise the noise of the shredder, which works inside the tank to ensure correct ventilation. The ergonomic design, without sharp edges, enhances the appearance and simplifies cleaning in the bathroom. As testimony to quality, Genix is approved by LGA, and all units are tested according to the most rigorous current standards, providing bathrooms wherever you want, hassle free. Take a closer look at the electric boiler solutions for an excellent alternative to gas or oil…
No gas – No problem!
E
lectric boilers have existed in one shape or form for a considerable number of years. However, only recently, in relative terms, they have been designed to operate like gas or oil system boilers. The latest designs of electric boilers, for example the Fusion Comet, include the circulating pump, expansion vessel, automatic by-pass, auto-air vent, magnetic filter and temperature sensors incorporated within the boiler itself. They also have in-built fault finding diagnostics and engineer’s commissioning control panel. With substantial areas of Ireland having no access to natural gas and, with a considerable amount of these heated by old oil-fired boilers or antiquated electric storage heaters, electric boilers are considered to be an excellent alternative to these heating systems. So what’s the difference between a gas system or oil system boiler and an electric boiler? Obviously the main distinction is the type

of fuel required to heat the water within the boiler. However, notwithstanding this, there is very little difference. The pipe-work, radiators and controls are identical to that of a gas or oil central heating system. In addition, no flue is required, therefore the boiler can be installed almost anywhere within the property and when operational is 100% efficient. There is also no mandatory annual inspection of electric boilers – although a periodic inspection and service is advisable. The inspection would include checking pressure, filters and electrical connections. One of the popular misconceptions of electric boilers is that they can only supply heating to small flats. Outputs of electric boilers on single phase electricity can be up to 14.4kw i.e. 49,000btu’s. Care should be taken when specifying high output electric boilers, as not all domestic properties can accommodate such high electricity loads. A typical specification for a three-bedroom, 1980’s type property would involve a 12kW Electric Boiler and 150 litre cylinder however
The Comet 150 indirect electric boiler system.
a heat loss on the property should be performed to confirm boiler output. The Electric Heating Company now supplies a range of central heating and hot water packs that include the Comet or SlimJim Electric Boiler, a direct or indirect unvented stainless steel cylinder plus controls. These packs are available in various combinations of outputs and capacities and are competitively priced. To reduce installation time and as a further assistance to the busy installer, the company also supplies the above packs with pre-plumbed cylinders. New products, extended warranties and the Triple A campaign for ‘Accredited Authentic ASSURED’ products will take centre stage in Dublin…
Quality and service from Altecnic W ith more than 25 years working closely with plumbing and heating customers in Ireland and Northern Ireland, leading manufacturer Altecnic continues to make its mark as a reputable and trusted brand. Placing quality and service at its core, the company is working hard to raise awareness for the importance of installing only certified and accredited plumbing and heating products. In 2014, Altecnic embarked on a campaign to highlight its Triple A stamp for ‘Authentic Accredited Assured’ - which continues to emphasise the increasing problem of substandard ‘looky likey’ products flooding the market. Altecnic will be using Ireland’s Plumbing & Heating Trade Event in Dublin as a platform to highlight these messages to the market, plus introduce the latest addition to its Dirtmag range and the news on the extended warranty of its Reflex Expansion Vessel. National Sales Manager, Mark Mogey, said, “These are exciting times for Altecnic in Ireland. With a record number of our tried, tested and trusted products being sold, our range is continually evolving and we plan to unveil additional products throughout the course of the year. “Our parent company, Caleffi, is recognised as being the market leading manufacturer within the HVAC market and we are also

fortunate to have a very successful relationship with IMIT, supplying its mechanical thermostat range. “Both of these brands complement Altecnic’s commitment to delivering well manufactured, high quality products which have been through the rigorous assessment processes needed to gain full accreditation. “Altecnic has established an excellent reputation across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland over the past 25 years, and we plan to carry on building on that reputation by implementing a number of initiatives which are aimed at supporting and rewarding the future of plumbing in Ireland.” Part of the company’s plans is to support the next generation of heating and plumbing professionals. Altecnic is continuing to sponsor colleges in Northern Ireland and will be announcing the winners of its search to find the Heating and Plumbing Apprentice of the year, a competition which is taking place between colleges that run plumbing and heating qualifications. As well as highlighting its Triple A campaign, Altecnic will be showcasing DirtMag IQ Prime, the latest addition to its comprehensive range of magnetic dirt and air separation products for domestic and
commercial systems. Manufactured by Altecnic’s sister company, Caleffi, the new addition is made from a mixture of brass and effective composite materials, offering a cost effective option without compromising on the functionality and effectiveness that Altecnic customers have come to expect from the existing range. In addition, Altecnic will be announcing the extended warranty covering its popular Reflex Vessel. Proven to last longer and perform more efficiently than traditional air filled vessels, Reflex will now be covered for five years. “We will also be showcasing the Caleffi 533h Series of WRAS approved Pressure Reducing Valves that now operate up to 80°C, plus our tried and tested Caleffi Thermostatic Mixing Valves accredited to the highest regulations of TMV2, TMV3 and WRAS,” Mark added. The Altecnic team is inviting visitors to discuss the accredited product range, see the working model of DirtMag, find out more about product development and enter the company’s competition to win an iPad. Efficiency and reliability with John Guest’s plumbing solutions

his year’s Ireland’s Plumbing & Heating Trade Event in Dublin will see John Guest promoting its extensive product portfolio, including the iconic JG Speedfit brand. For more than 50 years the John Guest group of companies has been manufacturing push-fit fittings, pipe and plastic plumbing systems to a wide variety of industries and applications, such as drinks dispense, plumbing, pneumatics, compressed air systems, water purification, drinks vending, automotive and telecommunications. Headquartered in West Drayton, the company has a global presence with offices in Europe, Asia, North America as well as Australia and New Zealand. Invented by John Guest, the now famous ‘Super Speedfit’ tube connector concept was introduced to the UK market in 1974. The new product was able to reduce assembly times to a few seconds with an instant tube-coupling system, which needed no tools for making a connection or disconnecting. subtly hidden behind the John Guest push-fit concept, the uniqueness of each JG connector lies within its high reliability of performance, longevity of service and suitability for all sorts of industries. adequate installation. Soldering copper joints involved the use of numerous tools such as blowtorch, heavy-duty pipe cutters, solder, emery paper, flux, etc. Such an installation process not only entails a high level of competency, but is also very slow, posing a certain health hazard on the plumber and allowing minimal flexibility if the system needs to be altered at any given time. Accommodating a vast array of industries, the plastic push-fit has come a long way from an idea to a unique and truly innovative solution, with John Guest making and selling more push-fit fittings per year than anybody else in the world. The billions of John Guest fittings currently in use around the globe on a wide variety of application types have gained the brand worldwide recognition as the industry’s best. show. A piece of mandatory EU legislation applicable in 28 EU countries, it will govern the ecodesign and energy labelling of space and water heating products. In layman’s terms, Europe has decided that the time has come for gas boilers, oil boilers and heat pumps to carry energy labels similar to that appearing on household appliances, such as washing machines, tumble dryers etc. In an effort to define minimal levels of efficiency, the labels will include energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and levels of noise. Europe has ruled that all boiler manufacturers must fit a low energy modulating pump into system boilers and combination boilers, where previously a

basic circulating pump would suffice. The largest consequence of this is obviously the cost at production level. A cost so substantial, that it has led to a very significant price increase from all manufacturers of gas and oil boilers. All the low-energy modulating pumps are more than double the cost of a standard circulating pump, which means the factory cost increase becomes a large percentage of the total value of the boiler. The hidden cost that goes unnoticed is the huge project behind the scenes to re-code all products for re-launch under ErP, redesign wiring and introduce the new component into production. The increased labour costs alone at factory level to administer this project are staggering. Every single product code will change as an ErP version becomes available. New literature, barcoding,
communications etc are all adding to a very big investment in conforming to an everchanging Europe. T: (RoI) 05677 55057 or (NI) 00353 5677 5507 W: www.vokera.ie

isitors to Ireland’s Plumbing & Heating Trade Event, Dublin will be able to find out more about the innovative multiPANEL range. multiPANEL is a 9mm WBP plywood core wall panel, bonded with a choice of 32 laminate finishes. It is simply bonded to the wall and connects together with aluminium sections which are silicone sealed. During 2014, multiPANEL was installed in over 125,000 homes. Fitters like using multiPANEL because it is quicker to fit than tiles while end users love it because it simply wipes clean, with no visual deterioration. multiPANEL saves a lot of time and money in comparison to tiling, and is a more hygienic solution with nowhere for dirt or mould to gather. The same could be said for PVC panelling, so why use multiPANEL instead of PVC? Well, here’s a few reasons why:

product, and better for fixing into. Joints – PVC cladding is usually 250mm or 1m wide, resulting in multiple vertical joints, and/or joints within a 1200mm shower enclosure. multiPANEL is 1200mm wide, with a precisely engineered, and barely visible ‘hydro-lock’ T&G joint. Aesthetics – advances in laminate production over recent years have seen an exciting array of textured, sparkle, pearlescent and iridescent finishes,

The 38c Modena HE comes with all the same superb features as the 27kW and 32kW combi models but is still a recordbeating compact size and light weight at just 600 x 400 x 350mm and 33kg. That’s a massive 38kW for a mere 30mm extra depth and 1.5kg extra weight. “The size and weight of this boiler for such high performance leaves the competition standing,” said Ferroli’s Sales Director John Moran. “A comparison of the key features of the Modena HE 38c against other 38kW boilers on the market sees the Modena way out in front. Extensive flueing options with a reach of up to 60m allows for increased flexibility when replacing older boilers and only four moving parts means it is highly reliable and easy to maintain. All Modena HE boilers come with the choice of a 7, 5 or 2 year warranty for complete peace of mind for both customers and installers alike. “The 38kW model is what our installers have been asking for,” John added. “Their customers have been so satisfied with the reliability, performance and affordable price of the Modena boilers they’ve been putting in that it’s become their boiler of choice, but until now they couldn’t specify a Modena

ES takes a strong foothold in the Irish market
A
fter enjoying many years’ success in the Scandinavian market, ES (Nordic AB) - a leading manufacturer of Swedish renewable energy products - established a presence in Ireland in 2009. From the outset ES set out to do things differently. The ES brand of products will not be found in traditional supply chains. Instead, ES supplies its systems on a case-by-case basis directly to the home owner, business owner, plumber or developer. In all cases the ES team consults directly with the client, architects and/or engineers to design the most appropriate system solution for each application, regardless of whether it’s a simple domestic retrofit, commercial project or a full housing development, “While this process is quite labour intensive on our side, it allows us to design the optimum systems to achieve real life efficiency and comfort,” explained Karl O’Connell, Director. “This strategy allows us to perfect the finer details of a system, which can make the difference between an average system and a great one.” ES has implemented a strict

strategy to propel the company to be the market leader of renewable energy products in Ireland. The first strategy was to establish the quality, efficiency and value offered by ES through the domestic retrofit market, while the second strategy was designed to gain market share in the domestic development sector. To achieve this, ES brought in industry experts to the company’s existing team of engineers. As a result, ES now boasts an unequalled team of system specifiers and designers as well as a market leading customer service department. With these specialised departments, ES now offers the new build market a fully comprehensive package from system design right the way through to commissioning. The third strategy was designed to deal with possibly the most difficult issue within the renewable energy arena commercial retrofit. However, together with its trade experts and market leading products, ES has now completed a variety of large commercial project which have achieved outstanding results. New Irish product set to transform the heating industry

RG Awareness has launched a revolutionary patented central heating manifold, the NRG ZONE. The NRG ZONE was developed with support from the SEAI and EU and is set to transform the way heating systems are both designed and installed. “The variety of exceptional heating equipment available on the market today is immense,” explained Adrian Fahey of NRG Awareness. “However, in many cases these appliances are not achieving their true potential in real life installations. Condensing boilers are not condensing, retrofitted heat pump systems are not achieving the savings they should be and so on. The reason for this is that each energy efficient product requires a specific set of conditions to achieve their true potential.” NRG Awareness set out to design a single

Adrian added, “The NRG ZONE solves a variety of issues being faced in today’s efficient heating industry. By utilising the NRG ZONE, even the most complex heating systems can be designed in a matter of minutes. The unit allows for the seamless integration of heating appliances and the division of the heating system into both heating and hot water zones. “The unit creates optimal conditions for all heating appliances, as it separates the flow, bypass and return water volumes in the system. to each appliance, and so maximising its efficiency.” The benefits of the NRG ZONE are universal. System specifiers can design safe and efficient systems in a matter of minutes, product provider’s equipment will achieve maximum efficiencies in real life installations, installers can now install energy efficient systems in a timely, cost effective manner and the end-user will experience the true efficiency of the system. The NRG ZONE is available directly from NRG Awareness in a variety of sizes to suit applications from domestic installations right the way through to large commercial projects.
