Hot water will be controlled at the touch of a button from any smartphone, tablet or PC. According to Accuflow founder Justin Mc Inerney: “Up until now smart home technology was limited to a very niche audience, mostly trade – but at Accuflow, we want to transform the home heating and water market by making it easy and affordable for everyone to see this incredible connectivity technology at work.” T: (RoI) 021 4966 248 or (NI) 0353 21 4966 248 E: info@accuflow.ie W: www.accuflow.ie Accuflow Founder and CEO Justin McInerney and Managing Director for Ireland, Ken O’Shea.
Surge in illegal gas work prosecutions The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) has reported a significant jump in the number of successful prosecutions against unregistered and illegally operating gas installers during 2015. The CER prosecutes individuals or companies for illegally undertaking gas works while not registered or falsely portraying themselves as registered when they are not. It is illegal to carry out work on gas within a home unless registered with Registered Gas Installers of Ireland (RGII), which oversees the work of Registered Gas Installers (RGIs) with respect to safety on behalf of the CER. In total, the CER received 53 reports of potential illegal domestic gas works taking place in Irish homes in 2015. The CER initiated criminal proceedings against these reports and secured 15 prosecutions against individuals or companies. Illegal activity can be reported anonymously visit www.RGII.ie or call 1850 454 454.

Renewable Heat Incentive
Industry calls for a long-term plan after RHI closure Shock announcement brings incentive scheme brought to an early close and puts jobs on the line…
C
alls have been made for the Government in Northern Ireland to work closely with the renewables sector to create a sustainable, long-term plan for the industry following the decision to close the highly successful Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme a month early. With increasing uncertainty over the longterm future of the industry, many businesses have already said they will, at the very least, have to cut jobs or in some circumstances close completely. The only sliver of silver lining is that the sector may be able to use the positive engagement created by the shock decision to ‘plan ahead’ and ‘box clever’ to make the most of the limited opportunities available. But that will be difficult, given the lack of any clear strategic plan by the Government. Lisburn-based manufacturer, Warmflow Engineering, said that, despite the setback, the company remained committed to the renewables sector. Richard Thompson, Technical Sales Representative, said, “Over the past number of years Warmflow has invested heavily in developing class-leading biomass boilers and ground-source heat pumps in anticipation of providing the market with a new generation of locally manufactured products. “During the short time that the domestic RHI was active, Warmflow products received strong support from the renewables sector, with gaining momentum. The announcement of the suspension to the RHI has been hugely disappointing to Warmflow and its customers. “Despite this setback we will continue to

support home-owners and installers who still wish to purchase our class-leading renewables products with or without the Government grant support.” Ryan Turkington, Managing Director of the Cookstown-based engineering company, Turco, said that renewables work made up 20% of his business but we would now have to focus on fossil fuels again. “We employ 35 people and we’ll probably have to lose seven or eight staff,” he said. “We’re a small business and that is very tough. We have cancelled jobs because customers won’t go ahead without the incentive. We’ve been making oil boilers for 30 years, so once again we’ll find ourselves flying the flag for fossil fuels. The RHI scheme encouraged the renewables sector and now it’s gone.” Peter Lonton, Business Development Manager at Waringstown installation company, Green Energy Technology, said it had to turn away about £1.5million worth of work due to the announcement. “We just couldn’t guarantee that we could meet the new deadline so we had to give back deposits or simply turn the work away,” he explained. “We work closely with Austrian manufacturer, Hargassner, with a boiler manufactured specifically for a particular project and thankfully they pulled out all the stops to get the work we had booked in completed in time. “But by one minute past midnight on February 29 we lost 60% of our business. It’s a massive blow but we haven’t been hit as hard as most. I know of at least four
companies who are simply shutting the doors as they can’t see how they will survive.” He added, “Around 95% of our customers come through our door because they want to save money and the RHI was a huge part of this. I hope the Government learns from this situation, which was poorly managed. “We can cope with low levels of grant funding or support but what we can’t deal with is the lack of clarity from Government and the uncertainty they have created. We monitor the performance of every one of our boilers and are in regular contact with customers but we fear that, as other companies close, the required maintenance of systems will be overlooked and we will be back to a situation where renewables are getting bad publicity. We are desperate for a long term strategy.”
FUTURE That lack of clarity has been highlighted by Michael Doran, Managing Director, Action Renewables, who said that it remains “unclear what the future policy is for renewable energy in Northern Ireland”. His colleague Mark Compston, Senior Project Manager for Action Renewables, echoed concerns about this uncertainty but said that the industry would continue to lobby the Government. “The oil and gas industry in Northern Ireland receives Government support and we want to see a level playing field with the renewables sector, particularly as there is now no real strategy in place to meet the 2020 renewables targets,” he said. “The concern now is that many of the companies

who diversified from oil and gas to move into renewables will now go back to fossil fuels and we will lose that skill base. “The RHI scheme was a victim of its own success and while no industry wants to rely on incentive schemes like this, we need to work with the Northern Ireland Executive to create a sustainable, longterm plan for renewables that builds on the appetite for this technology. “We will continue to look at the best practice of other regions, including the success of the renewables sector in the Republic of Ireland, and lobby the Government accordingly. We have an innovative renewables sector in Northern Ireland with people who are passionate about the industry, so we can’t lose that.” Maria O’Loan, Partner at legal firm, Tughans, said the change was not looking at the wider success of renewables in Northern Ireland. “This is taking a very short-term view. We have advised some of the leading green companies in Northern Ireland on best practice and have worked on the planning aspects of a number of large renewables projects. In our experience, the RHI scheme significantly boosted the industry and encouraged more people to consider renewables. “This has created a vibrant indigenous industry with companies carrying out important research and development work. We could now see both the skills and the investment that has created being lost.” Looking ahead, Maria believes that it is now up to the industry to take the lead. “Manufacturers, suppliers and installers need to box clever and create own

schemes and offer new ways that will allow customers to finance their renewables investment. I understand this could be complicated but given the success of renewables I feel it is an option worth exploring.”
Background Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Jonathan Bell shocked the industry when he announced that the RHI scheme would close on February 29 after a reported overspend of around £30million. Despite major concerns over job losses in the industry, the Minister was successful in his move to close the incentive schemes down early, with DUP and Sinn Fein seeing off opposition from the other parties to win the Assembly vote. In his original announcement, Mr Bell said that both schemes had been very successful, with the non domestic scheme, in particular, seeing “significant uptake during the last 12 months and more so in the run-up to the recent scheme changes introduced in November 2015”. He added, “However, this increased demand means the available budget for new applications has been exhausted. To meet RHI commitments for existing installations, significant levels of additional funding will have to be found from within the NI Executive’s budget for the next five years to address the current deficit. To prevent further overspend I must bring forward legislation to the Assembly to close both schemes to new applications.”

Company News - PLUMBMASTER - Haldane Fisher
Plumbmaster - your new plumbing and heating merchant introducing a new name in the plumbing and heating sector from a local company with a strong industry pedigree...
H
aldane Fisher has unveiled the company’s new vision for the plumbing and heating sector. Building on the strength of Haldane Fisher’s plumbing and heating division, Plumbmaster is the company’s new brand that will deliver an enhanced focus on the plumbing and heating sector. With its own dedicated trade counters, staff and delivery fleet, Plumbmaster’s nine branches across Northern Ireland will offer a superior service directly to the plumbing and heating sector. However, while it is a new name, customers will have the peace of mind that they are working with a company with extensive industry experience
and expertise. “We have been in the plumbing and heating business for over 50 years but our extensive research found that, when people think Haldane Fisher, they still think builders’ and timber merchant,” explained Ian Haldane, Managing Director of Haldane Shiells Group. “We want to change this mind-set in the plumbing and heating industry and we see this as a real statement of intent. “Through Plumbmaster we will be able to provide more of a specific focus on the plumbing and heating sector, with the aim of becoming the biggest independent plumbers’ merchant in Northern Ireland.”
A significant investment programme is already well underway, with the first Plumbmaster to be unveiled at Haldane Fisher’s Newry headquarters in March ahead of a company-wide roll-out to be completed in the next few months. In addition to new signage at Haldane Fisher branches, the company has also invested in an additional four vans to strengthen the dedicated delivery service already in place. There will be rebranding at the nine plumbing and heating trade counters across Northern Ireland with the majority of branches having a separate entrance for Plumbmaster customers. All staff will also have their own

“Through Plumbmaster we will be able to provide more of a specific focus on the plumbing and heating sector with the aim of becoming the biggest independent plumbers’ merchant in Northern Ireland, .” branded workwear. These changes will be backed by extensive marketing support, including the launch of a microsite ahead of the official launch of a new website in May, plus customer and supplier events in each branch. Most importantly, all these significant changes, however, will be backed up by a dedicated service that the company has worked hard to ensure is in place ahead of the official launch of Plumbmaster. “That was very important to us,” explained David Haldane, Managing Director of Haldane Fisher in Northern Ireland. “The launch of Plumbmaster has been in our plans for a number of years, but we wanted to ensure we had all the important pieces of the jigsaw in place first. “We already have the products and service,
so with the investment in the rebranding and the additional fleet, we have strengthened this further. But the most important emphasis was on having the right people. We have worked hard to get the right personnel in place and we have grown our team significantly over the last year. “This is all aimed at providing the best overall experience for our customers and we are confident that Plumbmaster will be a success.” With its own management structure, Haldane Fisher has made a number of significant appointments in the plumbing and heating division recently, including at senior management level. Eamonn McCarthy, who was appointed as the company’s Associate Director for Plumbing & Heating last April, feels that customers will be

the big winners of the change. “This is an exciting time for the company, and the launch of Plumbmaster was one of the main reasons why I joined Haldane Fisher,” commented Eamonn. “We have always been plumbing and heating specialists but the launch of Plumbmaster will take us to a new level. We have a really strong team in place – not just through the recent appointments but through the experienced staff who have helped build such a strong plumbing and heating division. “We are a locally owned business, which allows us to be more flexible and respond to customers quickly. We have the people, the products and the service already in place and, through Plumbmaster, we can now expand this further.”

Opening of new gas showroom, relaunch of the company’s website and the launch of Safe Solar develops a range of new services…
Safe Gas success continues as company expands
S
afe Gas continues to go from strength to strength with the company recently opening a new showroom, launching a new mobile-friendly website and expanding into the renewables sector. The changes are a long way from the company’s humble beginnings in the kitchen of husband-and-wife team Paul and Victoria Scott in 2004. The new showroom at 14a Carnmoney Road, Newtownabbey, showcases the latest gas fires, gas tumble dryers, gas hobs and gas boilers – all of which are supplied and fitted by Safe Gas to provide complete peace of mind. The range of gas fires includes a full range of contemporary and traditional designs suitable for a range of budgets and requirements. These solutions comprise gas fires for homes with and without a chimney and include ribbon fires, flueless gas fires, chimney fires, open flame fires, glass fronted fires, room sealed fireplaces, balanced flue gas fires, high efficiency gas fires. Showroom Manager, Perry Clements, is the latest addition to an experienced team that also includes Contracts Manager, Peter Lynch, and he is enjoying his role introducing customers to gas fires such as the Paragon Convector P1; Paragon 4 Series; Beckford Suite; Gazco Medium Marlborough Stove; Parogon P8 Modern Limestone Suite; Eko 55/30 Fire and Eko 50/70. The new showroom also displays the UC Living range of highly efficient tumble dryers. The opening of the new showroom has been followed by a revamp of the Safe Gas website to accommodate mobile usage and update the details of the gas appliance products the company provides.

A recent radio campaign to promote the opening of the showroom, alongside the relaunch of the website, has worked superbly well and secured a marked increase in customers.
SOLAR PV The expansion has continued with the introduction of a new service, Safe Solar. The company was recently accredited to carry out PV solar panel installations and has already completed its first projects. These moves have strengthened a professional service that is backed by an experienced team. Paul has more than 16 years of experience in the plumbing and heating industry and, along with Victoria, the couple’s expertise has enabled the company to build a strong reputation for providing a fast and reliable boiler service and repair service to clients throughout Northern Ireland. Paul explained, “As we became more established and recognised within the industry, this opened up a lot of new opportunities, including the opening of our new showroom and the launch of Safe Solar. Our main focus remains on ensuring our plumbing engineers are capable of completing the work to the highest standard and having the right office staff in place to help maintain the workflow coming in at a fast pace. This same dedication to a high quality service will also be in place in our new showroom and through Safe Solar.” Victoria added, “We will also build our business by recruiting apprentices. As a local, family-owned business we endeavour to bring employment and training opportunities to our surrounding
communities. We believe in growing our own timber by training out staff from the ground up through apprenticeship programmes and then further industry training as required. “The opening of our new showroom and relaunch of the website alongside the launch of Safe Solar will offer even more opportunities.”

Paul Stanfield, Director of Sales, Marketing and Customer Services, at firmus energy, explains, “We have been operating in Northern Ireland for ten years and have already reached the 1,000km milestone of pipes laid. Our investment of £100million in our network has brought natural gas to towns and cities which hadn’t previously been able to access this sought-after fuel. “Our latest extension has been granted in County Tyrone where we are starting to connect customers in the Moy, Benburb, Blackwatertown, Loughgall and Charlemont areas, with the potential for 1,500 properties to switch to firmus energy. “As we value the support of local Gas Safe installers who undertake regular training and inspections for natural gas, we have been running a series of briefings across Northern Ireland to update them on our exciting future plans and network extensions. We are keen to continue to invest in and connect more customers to our network – which is great news for everyone, and these briefings allow us to let Installers from the firmus energy South region of the network who installers know about our attended a briefing event to find out about the existing and new opportunities the company can offer. plans for the future.

Push and Press Technology
Janette Henwood, Market Manager for Push-fit Systems at Pegler Yorkshire looks at how a combination of push and press technology is becoming a system of CHOICE…
Like two peas in a pod – push and press offer a combined approach
I
t is clear that today’s installer is much more likely to opt for a system that provides cost and time saving benefits over traditional forms of jointing. Both quality metal push and press systems offer these benefits in abundance! And, while the plumbing industry continues to debate the merits of both metal push and press, there has been a notable rise in the amount of systems being installed that now benefit from a combined approach. Research undertaken by Pegler Yorkshire, has shown that there are many reasons as to what influences an installer’s decision as to their preferred system of choice. These range from education and tradition through to time and cost saving and no heat requirements. Quality and the reduced risk of system failures still remains the main priority and as such metal push and press fittings are leading the way. Press-fit has a reputation for being a high performing solution. Since its inception in the late 1950s, its popularity has been paramount to the success of many projects. Because there is no need to use heat and solder it is a very clean and fast jointing method. It doesn’t leave carbon deposits or flux so there is less risk of corrosion and time required to flush the system. On the other hand push-fit is relatively new in comparison – introduced back in the 1980s it was originally classified as a light domestic solution used in conjunction with plastic piping. But today’s metal fittings have advanced so much that push-fit is now being used on a full range of projects from small domestic to large scale commercial, including The Shard. The technological improvements of quality push-fit fittings means they are now compatible with a

variety of pipe materials and their range can easily dovetail with a wide choice from plastic to flexible metal, copper and even carbon steel. Compared to traditional methods the flameless installation offered by metal push or press fittings eradicate fire risk during the jointing process. It negates the requirement for a hot work permit and eradicates localised annealing from high temperatures. As well as potential fire hazards, traditional methods use flux and solder which can run inside the fitting. A metal push or press fit system does away with the need for additional substances in order to create the seal, therefore eliminating any flux deposits which can cause a corrosive build up and shorten the lifespan of a system. Plus, with no solder on the internal walls of the pipe and fitting, the system operates with a full bore and less time is required to rigorously flush the system on completion. Another reason as to why these two complementary methods of jointing have been preferred is the issue of working in confined spaces. It can be almost impossible to ensure a joint is made correctly, when using traditional techniques, if access to it is restricted. If the blowtorch for example, cannot be passed around the fitting completely there is a risk that jointing
is incomplete and a corresponding risk of leakage. Highly engineered quality modern systems now incorporate easily identifiable fail safe features such as Pegler Yorkshire’s XPress unique Leak Before Press design allows installers to instantly identify unpressed joints and Tectite’s patented TectSEAL, directional seals pre-lubricated for reduced insertion force and the provision of a reliable seal. Every installation will bring its own challenges but the key is being able to adapt. Today’s systems allow easy adoption of differing methods and products and offer a reliable and robust conclusion. Manufacturers are tuning into this combined approach and, according to the research by Pegler Yorkshire, there has been a significant upturn in the demand for press and push ended valves. There is now a variety of press, press union and push end connections penetrating the market which ensure installers are able to carry on adapting to their preferred installation method without compromising the overall system. Redring’s new Expressions Revive electric shower range has revolutionised shower installations, making them faster and easier than ever before…
A new era for showers A
s well as sharp looks and a full chrome accessory kit, Redring’s new Expressions Revive range is the only shower available that offers a series of well thought through features including 14 power and water connection options, an easy access back plate and a bespoke compression fit elbow that comes as standard. Whether working on a new or replacement installation, the latest Redring shower offers installers the most flexible option on the market, making fitting and connecting a breeze. Commenting on the range, Nick Mawby, Redring Category Manager, said, “At Redring, we understand the importance of how simple a shower is to fit and service, as well as the features and performance it has. We maintain an ongoing programme of listening intently to installers and going the extra mile to meet their needs, as well as producing products that make end-users smile.” Based on this feedback, the Expressions Revive range has been designed with Redring’s new ‘Smart Fit 2’ connection system which includes significant access within a large and uncluttered back plate. This provides installers with more ‘working space’ for easier connectivity as well as a multitude of cable and water pipe entry options to cover almost any situation. All of the showers in the range come with six ideally positioned and sized cable entry points and eight pipe entry points as standard to replace virtually any previous installation easily, with minimal disruption to existing pipework and décor. In addition, installers will also find that the new product offers ultimate flexibility by virtue of having dual terminal blocks, allowing electrical connection from either the right or left hand side. Redring is also the only manufacturer to include a free compression fit elbow in the box for extra convenience, as well

as 100% compatibility with all common push fit plumbing connector systems or compression joints in virtually any orientation. The Expressions Revive range also features matching fitting points to the last two generations of Redring Xpressions/ Expressions showers, as well as many models sold by others in the market – minimising any drilling or repositioning required. The aesthetics of the shower have also been carefully considered; the range is noticeably slimmer than the model it replaces, providing a compact and stylish showering solution which is perfect for all sizes of bathrooms, en-suites and enclosures. New chrome highlights further enhance the appearance, as does the inclusion of a full chrome accessory kit (riser rail, hose and handset) as standard and one that features Flexi-Kit functionality.
Separate elevated dials for temperature and flow control make the appliances easy to operate, and the push start/stop button offers simple ‘set and forget’ convenience which allows users to retain their preferred temperature and flow settings. The ‘Expressions Revive Plus’ models also offer phased shutdown to flush out any residual hot water at switch off, ensuring a safe starting temperature for the next user and reducing the build-up of limescale in hard water areas. Designed and manufactured in Britain at Redring’s state-of-the-art facility the new range features two models, Expressions Revive and Expressions Revive Plus, both of which come in 7.2kW, 8.5kW and 9.5kW variants. All the models in the range come with a full 2 year UK warranty. T: (NI) 028 3833 7317 or (RoI) 048 3833 7317 www.facebook.com/redring.solutions

Gerry Robinson from Sealux investigates current upstand seals for trays and baths and takes a look at where the market is heading…
Spec-up on your shower seals! C urrently, upstand seals most often take the form of an EPDM strip with a high tack adhesive bed pre-applied on one side that allows plumbers to stick the strip onto a shower tray or bath side wall before final installation against the adjacent walls (see Figure 1). The part of the EPDM strip that extends above the ledge is intended to be sandwiched between the tile and wall.
Codes of Practice There is no dedicated British Standard regulating the design or quality of upstand shower seals and, consequently, there is no recognised benchmark to determine the ‘fitness for purpose’ of products promoted in the market. Relevant British Standards dealing with the sealing of movement joints in wet and damp conditions are BS 5385 (Tiling) and BS 6213 (Sealants).
‘Stick-on’ EPDM strips have gained good traction in the market because, in the eyes of plumbers, they are affordable, simple to install and they prevent leaks. However, plumbers are not tilers, and the installation of EPDM sealing strips by plumbers has adverse consequences for tilers and best tiling practices. There are two clear issues, as highlighted below. The first relates to the suitability of EPDM as a waterproofing material in tiling. The second relates to the ‘stick-on’ installation method, whereby the strip membrane is bonded to the shower tray or bath side wall.
tile adhesives and liquid waterproofing membranes. Fleece-faced polypropylene and polyethylene membranes are favoured by tile adhesive manufacturers because their fleece-roughened surfaces accommodate good mechanical adhesion with these tiling materials. The butyl adhesive bed on ‘stickon’ strips can react with a sealant applied into the tile/ledge joint, changing it from a high tack adhesive to a stringy soft cream (see Figure 3). While Aquastrap is ‘best in class’ in having factory-applied sealant isolation materials that protect against reactive sealants, the bottom line is that EPDM/butyl adhesive upstand strips are not tiling-friendly products.
• Problem 1: EPDM and butyl adhesive EPDM is not a suitable waterproofing material in tiling because it has a low surface energy that limits adhesion with sealants,
• Problem 2: the ‘stick-on’ installation method Sticking strips to shower tray and bath side walls can create a range of difficulties for tilers who must integrate

Strips bonded across the rounded side wall corners of shower trays and baths do not readily extend into the adjacent 90° wall corners, which causes tile deflection (Fig. 2). Likewise, where shower walls are not built square, an engagement of the off-set strip with the shower wall requires it to be bent back over the joint, which can also cause deflection in the bottom row of tiles. Rounded ledge corners result in perimeter ‘canals’ developing over the butyl adhesive upper face. This ponding effect feeds capillary action up the shower walls (see Figure 4). ‘Stick-on’ upstand strips are installed by plumbers. Full responsibility for the waterproofing of tiling of wet areas over shower trays and baths should rest with one installer – the tiler. These material compatibility and installation issues are inherent in the ‘stick-on’ upstand strip design. To eliminate these problems, a paradigm shift in the product design and installation practice is required.
Game Changer As a leading designer and manufacturer of movement joint seals committed to improving the state of art, Sealux has developed an upstand sealing system called HydroHALT that eliminates all the aforementioned problems associated with ‘stick-on’ butyl adhesive upstand sealing strips. The HydroHALT design sets aside the use of EPDM, butyl adhesive and the associated ‘stick-on’ installation method in favour of a more innovative solution that is superior in material composition, offers greater installation versatility and higher product performance. HydroHALT combines a revolutionary upstand strip with Sealux-N and a backer rod. The HydroHALT sealing system complies with relevant best practices promoted in BS5385 and BS6213 in respect of the designing of movement joints to relieve built up stress; joint substrate preparation for sealant compatibility and adhesion; the proper selection and dimensional application of sealant; and the use of backer material to accommodate sealant flexibility.
Low Profile Shower Tray
A wide range of advantages g HydroHALT eliminates the material incompatibility problems and installation limitations associated with butyl adhesive stick-on upstand strips. Advantages of HydroHALT include – It can be installed by: • Plumbers during installation of new trays and baths (Fig. 5) • Tilers into existing joints around new trays and baths (Fig. 5) • Tilers over tray and bath ledges in refurb projects • Tilers over trays and baths with integral up- stands (Fig. 6) • Tilers around low profile shower trays as low as 6mm (Fig. 7). Other advantages of HydroHALT include: • It extends 100% into 90° wall corners – no tile deflection • It eliminates ponding under tiles – no capillary action • It accommodates deviating joint widths caused by off-square shower walls • It’s compatible with both liquid and mat tanking systems.

So much so, Stuart Turner has had the confidence to extend the Monsoon product guarantee to an industry leading five years as standard. There is no longer any need to worry whether the consumer or the installer remembered to register the pump details to get an extra promotional extension to a guarantee. This guarantee extension is now offered as standard with every Monsoon product sold and sets a new benchmark in the industry. The superb reliability of the Monsoon range of pumps allows Hevac to offer an industry leading five-year guarantee as standard.
MONSOON – PERFORMANCE WITHOUT COMPROMISE All products within the Monsoon range use ‘peripheral pump technology’ and, as such, they are often considered to be more ‘plumbing system friendly’. For example, they are far less prone to performance and reliability problems caused by the formation of air locks when compared with pumps using ‘centrifugal technology’. At the core of every Monsoon pump is a high performance electric induction motor. These don’t use carbon brushes which wear with use and therefore do not require any maintenance. They are ‘continuously rated’ and offer reliable operation without overheating. Essentially, every pump in the Monsoon range is designed to run 24 hours a day,

7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. In reality, a shower or whole-house pump is never required to do anything like that, but it does mean that a Monsoon pump will go on working reliably for many years to come. Some might call it over-engineered but Stuart Turner calls it ‘Engineered to Excel’. The pump heads and impellers used on all Stuart Turner Monsoon pumps are precision engineered from brass and extended life hard faced seals keep the motor separate from the water in the pump head, resulting in unequalled reliability. The high performance induction motor is rated for continual operation and requires no maintenance. The range includes variants capable of supplying pressures ranging from 1.5 up to 4.5 bar. Single and twin head options make the product suitable for pumping hot and cold water supplies independently or simultaneously, whilst ‘Standard’
and ‘Universal’ options are available for use in positive and negative head flow applications.
MONSOON – ONE OF THE QUIETEST PUMPS AVAILABLE All mechanical pumps will make some noise but minimising just how much noise they make is down to a combination of pump design, application specification, how the unit is installed and the characteristics of the environment in which it is installed. To this end, every Monsoon pump features heavy-duty anti-vibration rubber mounting pads and 300mm long flexible hoses featuring integral isolation valves. These simplify installation and also reduce vibration in the water pipes, making Monsoon pumps amongst the quietest available. In fact, independent testing at Salford University conducted in accordance with BS EN ISO 11203:2009 recorded a noise level of just 52.5 dBA – about the same noise level as a typical dishwasher.

WEBITE AND APPs
Baxi’s new easy-to-use toolkit app is set to save installers time and money, while its relaunched online trade area makes information easier to access…
Mobile toolbelt keeps installers ‘appy!
T
he free Baxi Toolbelt app has been developed in response to customer feedback which found that heating engineers would welcome the support of an app when they are out and about installing, repairing and servicing boilers. Available on iPhone and Android, the app offers a raft of tools that work offline, ensuring access whenever, wherever. Features include an error code look up tool to help with fault finding, a gas flow rate calculator and single and multi-drop gas pipe sizing calculators, with more tools to be added over the coming months. For phones that include an LED flash, the Toolbelt also includes a built in torch. The fault finder allows installers to navigate a complete list of error codes for current Baxi products, helping engineers to diagnose faults more quickly. For extra support, the app links to the Baxi technical helpline, connecting installers with expert advice at the touch of a button. The gas flow rate calculator works with metric and imperial meters and includes a
built-in timer. The gas pipe sizing calculators have been designed to be quick and easy to fill out, saving time and money. A built-in safety check means that installers will receive a notification when their gas pipe sizing and single drop calculations meet safety requirements. Plans for the future include a dedicated area for the manufacturer’s loyalty scheme, Works. Including a barcode scanner for quick and easy boiler and warranty registration, it will also offer the ability to complete free Gas Safe notifications, request service reminders and view Works account statements. Engineers that have already downloaded the app will automatically receive the updated version as and when it’s available. Paul Clancy, managing director for Baxi Ireland, said: “These tools can be used
without phone data or Wi-Fi – meaning an end to frustration with signal black spots. With a bank of essential tools on offer from the word go, it also offers us a fantastic platform that we can add to as time goes on, making it easy for installers.” The app is now available to download from iTunes or Google Play. anbra Fyffe Ltd, market leaders in the supply of plumbing and heating products in Ireland, is celebrating being the first Irish company to be awarded NSAI’s licence to use the Irish Standard Mark in connection with its new INSTANTOR® PEX-AL-PEX Multilayer Pipe and INSTANTOR® Press Fittings range. Awarded by the NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland), this certification is a genuine statement of quality and highlights Sanbra Fyffe’s ongoing commitment to the manufacture and supply of superior plumbing fittings. It also verifies that Sanbra Fyffe’s INSTANTOR® Press System conforms to EN ISO 21003, the defining standard and benchmark manufacturers strive to achieve in multilayer piping and press systems. Following two years of intensive product development and testing, the
INSTANTOR® Press System underwent a rigorous and thorough certification audit with the NSAI. The successful culmination resulted in the NSAI granting licence number 1.153.001 for International Standard EN ISO 21003 to Sanbra Fyffe. Commenting on the success, Noel Conroy, Commercial Manager at Sanbra Fyffe, said, “This is a great achievement for the company. Sanbra Fyffe are the only Irish company to be awarded a licence for this standard by the NSAI. “The industry has many similar product offerings that claim to be manufactured to the standard, but are not necessarily certified to the standard by a recognised Standards body. With our NSAI Certification, Sanbra Fyffe can differentiate completely from the competition. “The NSAI certificate provides proof for the builder providers, plumbing and heating stores and the plumbing trade as a whole that Sanbra Fyffe’s INSTANTOR® Press

System conforms to the EN Standard while underscoring Sanbra Fyffe’s reputation as the market leading supplier of quality plumbing and heating products in Ireland.” Noel also paid tribute to his Sanbra Fyffe colleagues involved in achieving the standard and thanked the NSAI for their cooperation with Sanbra Fyffe engineering and quality control staff during the testing and audit process. Sanbra Fyffe Ltd, part of the Northstone group, is committed to the supply of superior plumbing products, hence the company motto is ‘Quality without compromise’. The extensive range of plumbing and heating products provided by Sanbra Fyffe includes other brands of note, such as TUCSON® pumps, motorised valves and expansion vessels; EIRLINE® taps; IMMERTEC® immersion heaters; SANKEL® central heating chemical treatments; and LEISURE and RANGEMASTER sinks.
INSTANTOR® PEX-AL-PEX (PE-xB/ Al/PE-xB) is a multilayer pipe which combines all the advantages of metal and plastic pipe. The pipe is constructed with a double inner and outer layer of Silane method crosslinked polyethylene PE-xB, then bound by quality adhesive to a longitudinally TIG butt welded 100% oxygen tight aluminium layer. It is this aluminium layer that allows the pipe to maintain its shape after bending. Total hygiene and high corrosion resistance is ensured as fluids come in contact with the inner PE-xB layer only. Available in: Coils - 16mm x 100M, 16 x 500M, 20mm x 100M, 26mm x 50M, 32mm x 50M Insulated Coils - 16mm x 100M, 20mm x 50M, 26mm x 25M, 32mm x 25M This is a more cost effective pipe system when compared with conventional piping systems in that it requires less fittings than traditional methods. The metal core within the pipe means it can maintain its rigidity
under temperature when installed in hot water applications and with noticeably less expansion, an advantage when being used in exposed pipework in central heating systems. INSTANTOR® Press fittings are manufactured using the same highgrade CW617N brass as Sanbra Fyffe’s market leading range of NSAI certified INSTANTOR® Brass Compression fittings. Each fitting features stainless steel sleeves and two EPDM ‘O’ rings on each connection which, when pressed correctly, delivers a water-tight seal in seconds. Quick to install in three simple steps – Cut, Calibrate & Press, saving on time and costs as less fittings are required when compared with traditional plumbing methods. INSTANTOR® Press fittings are designed for use in sanitary water supply and heating systems and are available in sizes 16mm, 20mm, 26mm and 32mm.

ark Crawford has been appointed the new Area Sales Representative for Ireland by MD Ireland and he is relishing the new challenge. The company prides itself on internal promotion and Mark’s appointment is another example of this, as he takes over from Andy Erwin who has left the company to pursue a career outside the plumbing and heating industry. In fact, Mark has worked his way up the ranks at MD Ireland, joining the company eight years ago as a sales administrator before being promoted to Branch Supervisor last year. Those two roles provided the perfect foundations for Mark’s new position which will see him working directly with customers all over Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. “I’m really looking forward to this new challenge and to meeting our customers and seeing how we can make a difference to their business,” he said. “As Branch Supervisor, I have already worked with many of our customers, dealing with them on the phone or via e-mail, so it has been nice to be able to put a face to the voice.” Mark’s appointment has ensured a smooth transition for the company, with it being very much a case of business as usual. “The fact that MD Ireland has a history of

When he was researching how to cut the energy bills at his idyllic home outside Belleek, he opted for a tried and trusted manufacturer. “We have installed Warmflow products on retrofit upgrades all over Ireland so I was well aware that the company delivers in terms of a quality product and a great backup service,” he said. “When I started looking into new systems for my own home the first thing I wanted was a tried and trusted manufacturer and with Warmflow also being based locally and offering a great service, it all added up to a great package.” With additional land available to install the ground loops beside his home, Damien selected the Warmflow Ground Source Heat Pump. He has also added solar thermal and solar PV panels to the property, meaning his running costs for the heat pump are practically cost neutral. Damien added, “The overall efficiency of the Warmflow Ground Source Heat Pump is second to none and the inclusion of an inverter was very important, as I wanted to make sure the system was as efficient as possible. In terms of a quality product and a great service, Warmflow ticked all the boxes.” The project offered a slightly different challenge as it was a retrofit of an oil heating system but it was one that Warmflow took in its stride. “We were delighted to be working closely with Damien and that the system has proved

such a success,” explained Michael McGirr, Renewable Technical Sales Representative. “This project confirms that those looking for a highly efficient heat pump should look no further than Warmflow.” This also confirms that Warmflow has met the company’s original goal of designing a heat pump that is one of the most efficient appliances in its class. Independent tests have shown the efficiency of the Warmflow Ground Source Heat Pump to be 508% at B0W35. This means that for every 1kW of electricity consumed, 5.08kW of heat are produced. Under the new ErP Directive, the Warmflow Ground Source Heat Pump also has a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCoP) of A+++. Unlike most other heat pumps which produce heat at a fixed output, the Warmflow Ground Source Heat Pump makes use of the latest variable speed compressor technology to produce heat at the required rate. This gives the heat pump a wide output range and it automatically modulates within this range depending on the heat demands. To optimise the efficiency of the appliance it is equipped with the latest EC motor variable speed circulating pumps, which matches its speed to the hydraulic resistance and the heat demand of the system and extraction rate of the ground loop.
For ease of installation, all pumps and sealed heating system components are conveniently housed within the heat pump casing. This speeds up installation and minimises wiring and plumbing needed on site. The unit also has an inbuilt monitoring system, which monitors flow temperature, flow rates and system temperatures for easy commissioning. A dedicated wiring centre greatly simplifies connection to external wiring and sensors making this heat pump very installer and service friendly. The Warmflow Ground Source Heat Pump is part of a wider renewables range from the company that includes wood pellet boilers and solar thermal tubes.

Industry Digest - Latest News from OFTEC... Plumbing & Heating Magazine provides an insight into OFTEC Ireland’s work on behalf of the oil heating and cooking industry in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland…
First Solid Fuel Training Centre in Northern Ireland launched
T
he first OFTEC approved training centre in Northern Ireland to offer training and assessment for OFTEC’s Solid Fuel Installation, Servicing and Commissioning (Dry) certification has now opened at Micon in Lisburn. Micon Distribution LTD is a leading distributor to the fireplace and stove industry throughout the UK and Ireland and is offering the new course to technicians to provide greater support for retailers and installers within the industry. In conjunction with North West Regional College, the specialist course aims to provide candidates with the knowledge and understanding to install dry stoves which meet the requirements of building regulations and standards. The new training centre in Lisburn brings the number of centres in Ireland offering solid fuel training to two, with METAC already established in the Republic of Ireland. The courses are open to technicians wanting to demonstrate their competence to customers and offers a recognised qualifications and registration with a trade association with an excellent track record. With trendy solid fuel stoves in vogue at the moment, it is important that householders know the risks and understand the importance of correct installation and proper maintenance. New and replacement solid fuel combustion appliances must be installed in accordance with regional building regulations and manufacturer’s installation instructions. If they are not installed and maintained correctly they can present a dangerous risk to life and property. Registering with OFTEC and becoming a

‘Competent Person’ means a technician can demonstrate their competence to consumers. This certification allows consumers to have peace of mind as the technician has been trained, assessed and inspected in the field and is deemed competent to work on their heating system. Additionally, technicians have full insurance and are part of a trade association with a proper complaints procedure in place, should something go wrong. The technician also has access to free technical advice seven days a week, the support of local inspectors on the ground and the use of control documentation for the benefit of consumers. Micon will initially offer installers the OFT15108(D) - Installation, commissioning and servicing of solid fuel burning appliances (dry space heating) and propose to offer the OFT15-108(W) – Installation, commissioning and servicing of solid fuel burning appliances (dry space heating and hot water heating) later this year. Under each scope of registration, technicians can install, commission and service solid fuel fired stoves, room heaters and associated equipment and systems in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions, industry practices and standards, and legislative requirements. Micon is a family run business that has been
operating within the industry for over 30 years and is led by brothers Michael and Conor Farnan. Managing Director, Michael Farnan, said, “The next step for us was to ensure we had the support in place for our retailers and installers within the industry. Becoming an OFTEC Approved Training Centre enables us to provide recognised training and assessment of installers.” David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland Manager, added, “We are delighted to welcome Micon as an OFTEC training centre in Northern Ireland. Their offering of the solid fuel course will complement the current oil courses being run by centres locally and, along with METAC in the Republic of Ireland, fills a welcome gap in the solid fuel market. “For too long there has been a limited offering of solid fuel training in Ireland and we are delighted to be associated with proactive providers like Micon and METAC. “For OFTEC registrants who have completed a solid fuel course in recent years they can add on the solid fuel scope of registration from just £50 (€65).” Book your place on a solid fuel course. CASE STUDY – HAMILTON GAS PRODUCTS
The former Aer Lingus HQ building at Dublin Airport where three Rinnai HDC 1500i NG Condensing Water Heaters have been installed.
project success for Hamilton Gas Products and AirconMech Ltd…
Rinnai takes flight at Dublin Airport
W
ater heaters from Rinnai were specified for the refurbishment of Dublin Airport. Three HDC1500i NG Condensing Water Heaters have been installed at the newly refurbished Aer Lingus building, providing superior efficiencies and meeting the high hot water requirements. The system also includes one PLUS 500 Buffer (complete with accessories) and one common flue system to suit (200 mm flue with common header to suit). The system was designed, supplied and commissioned by Hamilton Gas Products and installed by AirconMech Ltd. Anthony Hayes is Technical Director at AirconMech Ltd, and was responsible for the full mechanical contract on the project. “The heaters supplied by Hamilton Gas Products were a small element of the project but an important one. The strategy we employed to install the heaters was an engineered solution with Delap & Waller, the project consultants, to the hot water provision on the project.” The hot water demand part of the design was, says Anthony, quite high. “They’re also very efficient in terms of space saving. Space was extremely tight so we had to try and devise a solution that was quite compact.” Rinnai offers some of the most energy efficient and cost-effective ranges of A-rated energy labelled appliances with load profiles to cover domestic to large industrial

applications, ideal for a large project like the Aer Lingus building at Dublin Airport. Non-condensing Infinity water heaters are ideal for the replacement market and the heavy duty condensing range, providing superior efficiencies for commercial operations of all sizes whether used to standalone or in Infinity Plus form, where banks of HDC units are combined to satisfy the high peak time demands of larger operations. The condensing process associated with the Rinnai HDC1500i internal water heater delivers up to 105% net thermal efficiency says Rinnai, which translates to significant energy savings when compared to their conventional counterparts. The product saves space, water, energy and time and applications are limitless. The HDC1500i boasts a compact design with internal and weatherproof external models and is also, importantly, renewables ready when you are - suitable for use as a temperature booster for solar thermal and heat-pump use. AirconMech also installed a 200mm flue with common header at the building. According to Rinnai, the common flue streamlines modular installation of its Infinity condensing continuous flow gas water heaters, making the whole process significantly more cost effective. Rinnai has also pioneered a common header flue system to streamline manifolded installations of its Infinity condensing continuous flow gas water heaters range.
Installation of the water heaters was challenging says Anthony. “The project required a lot of demolition works and it all happened in a very tight programme. Another challenge we faced was the fact that the demolition works weren’t straightforward and were quite complex. That led to areas not being released until quite late in the project so we only had a certain amount of time to get things done. “The building was an old, very large concrete building which made the demolition process an arduous one. In addition, the conversion aspect of the project was complicated. So small aspects of the job like that made the overall project challenging.” “The Rinnai water heater we installed is a great little machine. Coupled up with a buffer cylinder, they were able to meet the high hot water requirement demanded by the project. They really were the best fit for the project.” If you have engineers who need Rinnai training, e-mail rinnai-training@gasproducts.co.uk for more information. Service and experience from McCandless Plumbing Supplies

hile the plumbing and heating industry continues to change at pace, the two constants of experience and service continue to set McCandless Plumbing Supplies apart from the competition. Established in 1885, McCandless Plumbing Supplies has been in existence for over 130 years and that strong history in Coleraine remains as strong as ever. It is this solid foundation that has helped the company to go from strength to strength and now, as part of the Macnaughton Blair group, the branch at Lougestown Industrial Estate continues to flourish. This successful history is proof that the simple business ethos of good service delivered by knowledgeable staff makes all the difference, as Sales Manager, Eamonn Murray, explained. “We pride ourselves on great service and with such highly experienced staff, our customers know they can rely on McCandless Plumbing Supplies. “Many of our staff have over 40 years’ experience in the industry so we have been able to build strong relationships with our customers. We have customers who first used the branch when they were an apprentice and

are now nearing retirement age, showing the strength of our customer relationships. “The craic at the trade counter is great but, at the end of the day, we still have to deliver the products customers want at a price that is competitive. “There is a lot of competition in this area so keeps us on our toes and ensures we continue to provide the best service possible.” That service is backed by a strong stock of products from the market leaders in the plumbing and heating industry. This diverse product range is required as McCandless Plumbing Supplies has a varied customer base, ranging from DIYers and self-builders through to plumbing contractors of all sizes. Yet, for a company with a tradition dating back over a century, there is nothing backward looking about McCandless Plumbing Supplies. “We have strong relationships with our suppliers so, by working closely with the manufacturer’s reps or taking part in training courses, we work hard to keep up with the latest innovations and changes within the industry. “That is where the experience of our team
really helps, as our customers know they can rely on us for advice and guidance. With the industry moving at such a pace that we have become a vital information source for customers.” McCandless Plumbing Supplies also benefits from being part of the wider Macnaughton Blair group which has six plumbing and heating branches across the province. As contractors are now moving outside their traditional localities for work, this cross-branch service is an area of growing importance. This inter-company working extends to the company’s neighbours at Lougestown Industrial Estate, with a Watershed Bathrooms showroom and a branch of Jacobs Building Supplies next door. Both these companies are also part of the Macnaughton Blair group and are seen as an added extra by customers. “We have crossover between all three branches and the recent refurbishment of the Watershed Bathrooms showroom has helped boost trade. We all work together very closely to help our customers.” T: 028 7034 4422 W: www.macblair.com

St Clare’s Abbey Primary School, Newry MECHANICAL CONTRACTOR
A new name with an experienced team, Gilmore Engineering Services successfully completes the company’s first contract…
A first for Gilmore Engineering Services
G
ilmore Engineering Services has successfully completed the mechanical contract at the new St Clare’s Abbey Primary School in Newry. The company was only established in January 2015 and this was the first project that Gilmore Engineering Services successfully secured. “We are very proud to have been awarded this contract and I hope that is reflected in the high standards of work we have delivered at St Clare’s Abbey,” commented Managing Director, Andy Gilmore. “This has really got us up and running and, while it isn’t the first project we’ve completed, the fact this was the first job we won marked a significant milestone for us. As a Newrybased company it also means a lot to have this success on our doorstep.” While the company may be a new name in the industry, the fact that this project ran so smoothly is a reflection of the experience that Gilmore Engineering Services can offer.

Andy has been in the industry for over 27 years and he has built a strong team around him. “We have built a very strong team and we are growing all the time,” said Andy. “We can call upon a lot of experience within the team but, at the same time, we are also a very forward-thinking company and we’re willing to adopt new technology alongside more traditional methods.” Working alongside Felix O’Hare and Company - the main contractor on the project - Gilmore Engineering Services provided a state-of-the-art mechanical solution for this £5million new-build primary school and nursery school. The project brings two former schools together onto one site. St Clare’s Primary School and St Colman’s Abbey Primary School previously operated on two singlegender sites. Now the opening of St Clare’s Abbey Primary School and Nursery marks the beginning of a new era.

Catering for 400-plus pupils and comprising 15 classrooms, including special needs accommodation, the new school incorporates school meals accommodation, an assembly/sports hall, office accommodation and a separate twoclassroom nursery. The mechanical contract delivered by Gilmore Engineering Services reflects the modern facilities of this new school. In addition to the domestic hot water system, the company installed an oil-fired boiler underfloor heating system, ventilation and air conditioning, and rainwater harvesting. The mechanical system also includes CO2 monitoring and is connected to the overall Building Management System. “Overall, the project ran smoothly,” added Andy. “The kitchen facilities are state-of-theart and required a lot of focus, while we also had to deliver a separate plant room for the nursery school but, overall, we didn’t face anything that gave us any real headaches.”
Winning the St Clare’s Abbey PS contract started the ball rolling for Gilmore Engineering Services and, since then, the company has made the most of its border location to secure work across both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. These projects have included work on factories, schools and universities, with Gilmore Engineering Services capable of working in the new build, retrofit and maintenance sectors. “It has been an exciting first year in business and we are looking forward to building on this success,” concluded Andy.

St Clare’s Abbey Primary School, Newry Underfloor heating
With over 125 years’ experience, these underfloor heating pioneers have added another education project to a growing portfolio…
Experience and quality from Willis
W
hen it comes to education projects there is little that Willis Heating & Plumbing needs to learn. Established in 1887, the company has been in business for over 125 years and was one of the first pioneers of underfloor heating technology in the province. Since establishing a relationship with Wirsbo in 1995 (which then changed its name to Uponor), Willis Heating & Pllumbing has installed in excess of 2.5million metres of Wirsbo/Uponor PEX20 pipe in Northern Ireland. The strength of that relationship was again on show at St Clare’s Abbey Primary School in Newry where Willis Heating & Plumbing designed and installed an Uponor underfloor system to the ground floor and first floor of this new-build school. “The project involved around 3,000sqm of Uponor PEX20 UFH pipe along with 16 manifolds, so it was a sizeable project,” explained Ian Steele, Director, Willis Heating & Plumbing. “With our experience on education projects we didn’t face anything out of the ordinary at St Clare’s Abbey and we are delighted to add this to our growing portfolio of school projects. This was also the first time we have worked with Gilmore Engineering and after such a positive

experience we are looking forward to building on this relationship.” The BBA-certified Uponor PEX20 is the ideal underfloor heating pipe for a variety of floor structures in the commercial sector, so it was perfect for this project. The BBA certification is a factor that has proved a vital ingredient for product manufacturers to help ensure acceptance with specifiers, building control, local authorities and insurers. Being able to deliver flexibility on each project while still ensuring quality is one of the key factors behind the success of WIllis Heating & Plumbing. “We pride ourselves on offering customers peace of mind and, with our long-standing relationship with Uponor, we know we can provide that,” added Ian. “People may opt for cheaper alternatives but, for us, it is all about the quality of the product. For that reason, we remain committed to only installing systems that will stand the test of time. Uponor’s 25-year product guarantee offers this peace of mind.” A look at the company’s project portfolio alongside Uponor further highlights the strength of this relationship. In addition to a wide range of National Trust projects such as Temple Of The Winds, the recently
refurbished Mount Stewart, Castleward, and the award-winning Giant’s Causeway Visitors’ Centre – Willis Heating & Plumbing and Uponor have worked on iconic projects such as the Lyric Theatre, Ulster Museum, Grand Opera House, the Royal Victoria Hospital and the almost completed NI Hospice. This is in addition to work in the education sector, where Willis Heating & Plumbing and Uponor have worked on projects at every level from nursery schools right through to universities. These projects have been provided as part of a complete service, with Willis Heating & Plumbing providing technical advice, full design, CAD drawings and quotations as well as the full installation and maintenance service from an experienced, loyal team with a combined work experience in the field approaching 200 years and a combined work experience of the technical/office team in excess of 100 years.

Our complete range allows for the entire installation from the riser to the tap,” explained Warren Smyth, Uponor Specification Manager for the UK and Ireland. “That’s exactly what we delivered on this project. We supplied a wide range of diameter pipes and fittings right up to four inches and including the riser modular fittings in the plant room, so this tested the complete range to the full.” This versatility is just one of the many reasons why more contractors are turning away from traditional copper and steel and opting for Uponor MLCP. For Andy Gilmore, Managing Director of Gilmore Engineering, the speed of

installation and the ease of use were two key factors when choosing Uponor MLCP. He said, “Using the Uponor range provided us with complete uniformity in all the pipework, which helped not only when sourcing the materials but also made for a cleaner, faster installation. Not having to worry about a Hot Works permit is also a huge advantage, and the 25-year warranty provides us with complete peace of mind. It all adds up to a lot of advantages.” With all of the benefits of copper and none of the disadvantages, MLCP enabled a quick installation at St Clare’s Abbey PS without compromising on quality, allowing the build and the construction to be completed on time. The modular fittings allowed for fast and safe installation of the larger diameter pipes, with minimal numbers of components stored on site. MLCP is also form stable, allowing the smallest possible bend radius, a reduced number of connections and, as a result, reduced liability. Crucially, this allows it to be bent into shape according to the build requirements. “We provided full training to the team from Gilmore Engineering Services and we find that, once customers see how easy it is to use, they are more than happy to convert
to MLCP,” added Warren. “Uponor MLCP combines all the advantages of metal and plastic pipe systems without having to deal with the disadvantages of having to worry about issues such as a fluctuation in copper prices and theft from site. The aluminium core of this five layer composite pipe prevents oxygen ingress, reduced expansion rates, and, due to the product’s full WRAS approval, it also fulfils all hygienic safety requirements needed for safe tap water installation. The excellent long-run behaviour has been tested and confirmed by certification bodies all over Europe. From an installation perspective, it couldn’t be simpler. Connections can be made within seconds with the patented Uponor press system which produces permanent watertight press, clamp and compression connections. Complicated connections such as welding or soldering are now a thing of the past.

Boiler cashback schemes should be supported with effective system protection says John Vaughan, CEO at ADEY Professional Heating Systems…
It is important to adopt a best practice approach to heating system maintenance and protection.
Boiler cashback scheme must adopt best practice
T
he recently announced London boiler cashback scheme serves as a reminder that homes in Northern Ireland are eligible under a similar initiative and that this has been extended until March 31. The scheme is open to owner-occupiers whose household income is less than £40,000 and who have an inefficient boiler at least 15 years old. The grant of up to £1,000 is available to help with replacing an inefficient boiler with a more energy efficient condensing oil or gas boiler; switching from oil to gas; or switching to a wood pellet boiler. Funded by the Northern Ireland Executive, the scheme has been highly successful to date, with more than 18,481 old and inefficient boilers being replaced. It was given a cash injection of £2million in 2015 to extend it for another year, helping homes to become more energy efficient and also reduce annual energy bills. However, John warns that if these new boilers are fitted to dirty systems and aren’t properly protected by quality magnetic filtration and chemical water treatment, their performance will quickly deteriorate and the scheme will fail to deliver the long-term energy, cost and environmental goals expected.

“While boiler schemes are to be welcomed and provide an opportunity to highlight energy inefficient boilers, without adopting a best practice approach to heating system maintenance and protection, they will ultimately be unable to make a lasting impact on domestic carbon emissions,” he says. “For example, if a new A-rated boiler is fitted to a system that hasn’t been cleaned and is contaminated with black iron oxide sludge as a result of natural corrosion, its efficiency will quickly be reduced by as much as 12-15%. According to research, the presence of just 5kg of sludge within the system, which is not uncommon, reduces radiator heat output by up to 36%. To recover lost heat output, home-owners will naturally turn up the thermostat or use extra heating resources, resulting in more energy use to treat the symptom and not the cause. “Our MagnaClean filters have been independently proven to save up to 6% on household carbon emissions and energy bills year on year. The Energy Saving Trust also estimates that using a premium chemical inhibitor can increase boiler efficiency by a further 3% and prevent up to a 15% reduction in the effectiveness

NEW SYSTEM FILTER FROM WORCESTER, BOSCH GROUP OFFERS FLEXIBILITY AND EASE OF INSTALLATION…
Worcester launches all-new Greenstar System Filter
W
orcester, Bosch Group, has unveiled a brand-new Greenstar System Filter, designed to make installation and servicing simpler than ever before. Available in 22mm and 28mm variants and developed with the help of over 200 heating engineers, Worcester’s new accessory has been engineered to allow a bi-directional flow, enabling it to be installed anywhere along the return circulation pipework between the last radiator and the boiler. This flexibility, added to the accessory’s sleek appearance, allows for a neater finish within the home. For further ease of installation, the Greenstar System Filter’s isolation valves can be activated using a single 90° turn, with red and green indicators showing when the filter is in operation. The design of the new Greenstar System Filter has been optimised by the inclusion of a wide top opening, which allows over 500ml of inhibitor fluid to be added without the need for injection. The removable lid has been designed to prevent over-tightening and damage to the O-ring seal, while a bottom drain valve and detachable body means that the filter can be cleaned thoroughly during a service. Crucially for the long-term protection of the heating system, a larger powerful internal magnet safeguards the boiler and wider system components by capturing
the contaminants often found within dirty system water, such as iron oxide and magnetite. Meanwhile, a separate internal mechanism harnesses nonmagnetic contaminants, such as flux and solder. With research having proven that a clean and well-protected heating system can help support reduced gas consumption (saving home-owners up to 6% on their heating energy costs), Worcester’s new filter is a must for home-owners looking to benefit from reduced bills, increased comfort, and a longer boiler lifespan. Martyn Bridges, Director of Marketing and Technical Support at Worcester, Bosch Group, commented, “The launch of our new Greenstar System Filter means we can now offer an accessory which is as attractive from an installation point of view as it is to the discerning home-owner. The market for system filters is growing rapidly, which is largely thanks to increasing awareness of the impact they can have on system performance, longevity and overall fuel efficiency.” T: Ray McClay on (NI) 07767 432567 or (RoI) on 0044 7767 432567. Dedicated servicing, maintenance and spare parts now offered by a combination of exclusive merchants and trained Saturn installers…
Saturn Heating - spreading the word throughout Ireland
N
ow with the help of regionally exclusive merchants, Saturn Heating, is building an exciting network throughout Ireland with dedicated Saturn installers. This new approach has allowed the firm to bring its stainless steel oil boiler solution to every corner of Ireland. A combination of well-known merchants and specially trained Saturn installers (as showcased on the map opposite) means Saturn Heating can offer dedicated servicing, maintenance and spare parts throughout Ireland with exceptional response time for home-owners. Through its network of merchants, the firm has been able to hold several breakfast mornings around the country which have showcased the energy-saving attributes of the NHC Stainless Steel boiler along with the long service life it also boasts. According to Saturn Heating, when plumbers are looking for a top quality product it is important they have the opportunity to learn about Saturn Heating NHC Stainless Steel Oil Boilers. “It’s also important for us that merchants throughout Ireland become part of the Saturn Heating family to bring this product to all plumbers,” says Stephen Duffy, Saturn Heating Technologies. “It is quite incredible when you think that most of the condensing oil boilers on the market today use a combination of mild steel and stainless steel to produce their heat exchangers,” Stephen continues. “All condensing boilers produce a condensate or vapour that is highly corrosive and so not generally suited to mild steel. The Saturn NHC uses an all stainless steel high efficiency heat exchanger that is designed to handle the corrosive condensate. The NHC is also the only boiler to include a neutralising filter and trap to treat the corrosive condensate.” The resulting NHC condensing oil boiler range is like no other oil boiler on the market. Saturn Heating Technologies is confident that the NHC range will deliver a long service life, save Irish home-owners money and inspire people to think about this type of product before they have one installed in their home. Struggling to find quality water treatment products and techniques that protect heating systems from corrosion and limescale? Daniel Cheung, UK Trade Marketing Manager for Sentinel, gives his top tips on achieving reliable system protection…
Be smart about protection
P
ermanently preventing corrosion and limescale and all of the associated problems such as inefficiency, cold spots, premature parts replacements and boiler breakdowns is achieved when high quality protection products are introduced. System protection is also important with regards to compulsory energy labelling for boilers as it will help to maintain energy ratings for boilers, components and systems. Additionally, proper water treatment will help to keep boiler manufacturer warranties intact since many are dependent upon suitable protection procedures having been undertaken, such as inhibitor dosing. Unfortunately, corrosion and limescale are not limited to heating systems that have received no system protection; both occur in systems with inadequate system protection or where protection has been compromised. A statistic from a major boiler manufacturer states that approximately 87% of all boiler call outs are to boilers without correct water treatment. Many installers have first-hand experience of delivering – quite unintentionally – poor system protection, despite using inhibitors and system filters. This is likely to be due to introducing poor quality products which are unable to offer sufficient protection from corrosion and limescale. Sadly, not all protection products available deliver reliable results. Inhibitors, for example, are high in number, ranging from low-cost white label to premium brands. Are they all the same? In short, no. Inhibitors are subject to only one standard, BuildCert, which is a minimum quality benchmark. As a result, there are many inhibitors on the market that fail to deliver sufficient levels of protection, offer the correct pH balance, or protect all metals found in the system. Where low quality inhibitors are used,

corrosion and limescale can still result, often quickly and aggressively. For reliable inhibitor protection, installers are best advised to check the boiler installation manual for recommendations – boiler manufacturers are keen to promote maximum system protection so only endorse tried, tested and trusted brands and products. The inhibitor should also exceed the BuildCert standard and protect all types of metal. To ensure that inhibitor levels are sufficient to deliver adequate protection, a quick inhibitor test kit can be used. These test kits will confirm, within moments, whether a system is properly protected. To back up inhibitor protection, heating engineers should also consider fitting a filter to the system. This will ensure that, should a system fall foul of corrosion or debris for any reason, particulates will be removed from the circulating water. Importantly, the filter should be able to remove both magnetic and non-magnetic debris from system water (not just magnetic debris). Unfortunately, filters that rely on magnetic technology
alone are unable to filter out non-magnetic particulates. Furthermore, they can become covered in debris over time, losing their effectiveness, while many modern, compact magnetic filters have smaller magnets, meaning less particulates can be captured. Hydro-cyclone filters, on the other hand, do not rely on magnets and are able to capture both magnetic and non-magnetic debris from circulating water. These work by accelerating system water within the filter, expelling both magnetic and non-magnetic particulates from the water flow into a collection chamber below where it is ready to be simply flushed from the system. So when it comes to system protection follow the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple & Smart) approach; use high quality, boilermanufacturer endorsed products that exceed minimum quality standards and protect all system metals and always clean, protect and maintain heating systems for long-lasting, reliable protection. Neil Gaffney, Managing Director at Vokèra Ireland, talks about the advantages of adding heating controls to a home…
I
nstallers and home-owners are increasingly looking for ways to make their heating systems more efficient and provide them with energy and cost savings. If installers can make a boiler as efficient as possible by using no more fuel than is necessary whilst ensuring the property is kept at comfortable conditions, they can provide cost savings on energy bills. This is great news for home-owners and provides an opportunity for installers. By installing controls, installers can provide an effective way of making a boiler more efficient and they are simple to use when you know how. By incorporating controls into the heating system, installers can also provide property owners with better energy performance ratings for the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s Building Energy Rating (BER) Certificate, the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) or the European-wide Energy Related Product (ErP) Directive. Under ErP legislation, adding controls to a heating system can make it more efficient and will improve the energy rating. The ErP Directive has split controls into eight groups with each one adding an efficiency percentage to the space heating system rating. Each control class equates to a certain percentage uplift in system efficiency – eg a Class VI weather compensating

control and room thermostat will add 4% efficiency to the heating system. Take, for example, the Unica i32 combi boiler, which boasts a seasonal space heating efficiency rating of 94%. By following the ErP Directive guidelines, adding a weather compensation sensor and modulating room senor (such as Vokèra’s 711 OpenTherm RF programmable room thermostat) to a the Unica i32 gives a 4% efficiency uplift, taking the whole package to 98% space heating efficiency. This equates to an A+ energy rating and makes it one of the most efficient boiler and controls combinations available on the market. To achieve greater energy efficiency, homeowners and installers should consider the latest generation of Wi-Fi enabled smart thermostats. These provide up to Class VIII control, which gives an impressive 5% increase in space heating efficiency. For example, the new BeSMART thermostat from Vokèra will provide Class VIII control via an OpenTherm compatible Vokèra boiler. It is an internet-connected, multi-zone control that can manage up to eight different areas – Class VIII demands three or more zones to be created so BeSMART can far exceed the requirement. It is extremely easy to use and has its own App, which is available on both iOS and Android and works on a smartphone, tablet
or on a desktop computer via an internet browser. This means that users can set conditions wherever they are in the world. Using Class VIII controls will uplift most systems to an ErP A+ energy rating for space heating. By simply adding weather compensating control to a boiler, installers can achieve an increase in the efficiency rating. By using BeSMART, installers can offer their customers, with an OpenTherm compatible Vokèra boiler, weather compensation control in two ways. Option one is to install a physical sensor outside which, if placed correctly, will monitor weather conditions accurately and change the temperature settings accordingly. The second option is to use the BeSMART App and tell it where the boiler is located geographically. The App will then use an online weather service to define the ambient temperature. This is a huge benefit if an outdoor sensor cannot be used or placed in the right position to work correctly. Weather compensation is an important element in helping home-owners operate their heating systems more efficiently and reduce costs. KAMCO ADVISES ON THE IMPORTANCE OF ANNUAL CORROSION INHIBITOR CHECKS FOR HEATING SYSTEMS…
Annual boiler service? Don’t forget to check the inhibitor concentration!
W
e have all seen how the guarantee on new boilers has been increased to as much as 10 years, albeit with some conditions and small print. No doubt the extended guarantees are a result of intense competition between the boiler manufacturers, but they are fast becoming aware of the downsides of offering such long guarantee periods. Modern high efficiency boilers have smaller waterways that are more easily affected by any debris in the system water, and boiler manufacturers are stressing that the long guarantee is conditional on the heating system being thoroughly cleaned when the new boiler is installed. They are also concerned that the system water stays that way, and there is a drive from the boiler manufacturers to promote a check of corrosion inhibitor level when the annual boiler service is carried out, to ensure

that the inhibitor level is high enough to prevent corrosion and the formation of boiler blocking debris. Kamco, and other water treatment manufacturers, have been in discussions with the boiler companies to jointly promote an annual inhibitor check as part of best practice. You can quickly check whether a heating system has the correct treatment of Systemsafe-DM, or Systemsafe-DM Concentrate, with Kamco’s Systemsure water analysis test kit, which works with both Kamco inhibitors. As well as checking whether or not the system has been treated with the correct level of corrosion inhibitor, the Systemsure water analysis kit also enables engineers to make an immediate determination of the
quality of system water, allowing them to understand the causes of problems and to select the appropriate treatment to prevent future problems. T: (NI) 01727 875 020 or (RoI) 0044 1727 875 020 E: info@kamco.co.uk W: www.kamco.co.uk

NEW EMPHASIS ON STYLISH BATHROOM AND KITCHEN HEATING WITH DECORATIVE RADIATORS FROM STELRAD…
New focus from Stelrad with Aqua Series
S
telrad, a leading name in the heating sector, has been providing quality radiators and towel rails across the UK and Ireland to suit all price brackets. The combination of high quality manufacture, reliability, ease of installation and countrywide availability has always set Stelrad radiators in good stead, and now it’s developing a new stance – particularly with radiators targeted at the bathroom and the kitchen. One of the major trends in the radiator marketplace is the selection of standout radiators that make a statement in these two vital rooms in the home; not the same radiator that is used in the living room and bedroom, but a special decorative or designer radiator that adds to the ambience and says something about the room in which it is mounted. Stelrad has offered a range of decorative and designer radiators for the bathroom and kitchen for many years, but with the recent launch of its new Aqua Series, it is taking this increasingly important marketplace head on. Stelrad believes that a radiator shouldn’t simply be functional - it should add aesthetic appeal to the room in which it is installed, and to that end it is now offering a range of highly reliable, high-performance, good-looking radiators to grace any bathroom or kitchen under its Aqua Series branding.
Precision curves and fine tubes define the Wave.

The new Aqua Series includes a number of kitchen and bathroom products that have been available previously from the company, but now includes a number of new products, as Stelrad builds its targeting of this increasingly important market. The Decorative collection includes the classic towel rail, the STR towel rail, the hugely popular Caliente and Concord towel rails and the ultra-slim Esprit. The Designer collection welcomes the Vertical Ultra (a vertical version of the topof-the-range Vita Series radiator range); the part screen, part radiator, Excel; the beautiful Arc and Wave designs (with precision curves and fine tubes); Vistaline (an elegant design with neat, slim tubes),
Ellipse featuring C-shaped tubes; and the ever popular Optia range (featuring its unique shelves for stacking towels). One of the new trends in radiator purchasing in recent months has been the huge interest in the colour options available now. Many of Stelrad’s radiators are available in up to 35 different colours – ideal for interior designers or home-owners looking to see their radiators either blend in or contrast with the décor in the home. There is a delivery lead time associated with coloured radiators, but when built in to a redecoration schedule it is not a major inconvenience, with delivery for bespoke coloured radiators being around six to eight weeks. Installer incentives
2016 will see an extensive advertising campaign along with new incentives for installers…
Strong support for gas installers from Calor
C
alor has launched a 2016 advertising campaign offering home-owners who switch to gas home heating real value and improved home comforts. This February and March, home-owners across Ireland will see and hear Calor’s message of a free boiler for new customers across TV, press, radio and digital advertising. The company will also be holding home energy roadshows across the country to talk to home-owners about all the benefits of switching to a LPG home heating solution – from cosy central heating, hot water on demand, real flame fires, controllable gas cooking and efficient gas tumble drying. As well as engaging with home-owners across the country, Calor is also offering installers an attractive range of incentives for working with them in identifying new domestic business opportunities. “We know that the first person a customer speaks to for advice about making the switch to LPG home heating is often the installer,” commented Oliver Kenny, Regional Sales Manager at Calor. “As a skilled professional in the local area, their opinion is of great value for a customer looking for information on installing gas central heating in a home which lies off the natural gas grid. Relationships with installers are a crucial part of our business, so we work hard to ensure we are offering marketing support and incentives that mean Calor Home Energy installers have the resources they need to bring Calor to their customers.” Calor Home Energy installers also benefit from the extensive experience and knowledge of the Calor team and their local Calor sales representative, as well as support throughout the switching process. Installers who want to help their customers make the switch to Calor can be sure of support from one of Ireland’s leading LPG suppliers. Sean McBride, OFTEC Ireland.
Sean McBride from OFTEC Ireland explains the importance of becoming OFTEC registered and the struggles facing the organisation…
Fighting the good fight
Y
ou’d think that an association that places the utmost importance on issues like national safety, competence and environmental concerns would have the backing of Government and other relevant authorities. Not so with OFTEC, the trade organisation that represents manufacturers, suppliers and training providers while also managing a competent person registration scheme for technicians who install, commission and service oil, solid fuel and renewable heating and cooking equipment. OFTEC has been fighting an uphill battle for the past few years in trying to gain Government recognition. Sean McBride, OFTEC Ireland, explained, “A system for the regulation, certification, ongoing inspection of the work and assessment of competence of individual trained natural gas installers exists in Ireland yet homes heated by oil and solid fuel have the majority share of the home heating market. Why are individuals using oil or solid fuel not entitled to the same level of competence when they have a new boiler installed or serviced? “Stoves are now very fashionable and we are aware that many DIY installations have taken place that may not meet current building regulations – “We see this as a high risk area and have asked both the
Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and the Department of Environment to legislate on this issue making registration with a recognised trade body mandatory, similar to the gas sector - but to date, our pleas have fallen on deaf ears.” Registering with OFTEC and becoming a ‘Competent Person’ means a technician can demonstrate their competence to consumers. The consumer then knows that the technician has been trained, assessed and inspected in the field - deemed competent to work on their heating system. The consumer has the satisfaction in knowing that the technician has full insurance and is part of a trade association with a proper complaints procedure in place should something go wrong. The technician has access to free technical advice seven days a week, the support of local inspectors on the ground and the use of control documentation for the benefit of consumers. OFTEC’s current scheme applies to oil, solid fuel and renewable technologies. Notwithstanding the serious lack of Government support, Sean’s been much luckier when it comes to local authorities. “When I came on board four years ago, I began approaching local authorities. Wicklow County Council was the first
local authority to register in the Republic; they will now only tender out work to OFTEC registered technicians. Cork City Council has also come on board, as has Cork County Council. Leitrim, Sligo, Louth and Monaghan have also recognised the benefits and will only contract out to OFTEC registered technicians.” Sean’s role in OFTEC is very much on the ground, working with technicians and drawing on his own years of experience in the trade. “I started out as a plumbing apprentice and served my time with a fantastic local business in Skerries. I worked in England for six years and when I came back I set up my own business but, unfortunately, when the downturn hit, it went pear-shaped. “If someone had said to me five years ago I’d be in the position I’m in today I wouldn’t have believed them. Once the business went, I got into retraining and started teaching oil installation to technicians to bring them up to a standard. When the OFTEC position came up, I took it and I haven’t looked back since.” He added, “There are a number of training centres offering the oil training course and it takes approximately 4 -5 days to complete and pass your assessments. It’s a huge commitment and I have a lot of respect for those people who make the

Sean McBride (centre) with his OFTEC colleagues David Blevings (left) and Norman Armstrong.
decision to register with OFTEC.” Sean says there’s a large proportion of people out there who are not registered or trained but are working on oil boilers. “This is a concern, as a lot of guys are ‘cleaning boilers’, not servicing them and the consumer is unaware of the potential danger that may exist if the technician is not using a flue gas analyser to check for CO spillage and may be missing out on better efficiency settings if the boiler is not set up correctly. “Modern condensing boilers are advanced pieces of heating equipment and a technician needs formal training and a working knowledge enabling them to install and service them correctly. “There are also some very good people out there who maintain a duty of care to the customer but don’t see why they should be registered with OFTEC and that’s because we’re not a legal requirement like RGII and RECI. At the moment we have around 600 registered technicians but we also have about 1,600 people sitting on the fence, waiting for Government to make it mandatory and come on board.” Carbon Monoxide is, of course, a concern with oil boilers and stoves, and Sean is currently dealing with a Carbon Monoxide issue on a stove in Cork. “There appears to be a lack of
communication and understanding between what the building regulations stipulate and what the local authorities say. If someone rings me and says I have a problem with an installation, I have to check to see if the installer is OFTEC registered. If he is, I can help the householder, if he’s not I can only advise them to go to the local authority building control officer. The officer will refer to the building regulations that apply but has no power to get involved with the installer to put any problem right and will advise the householder that it is a civil matter and they can’t get involved. It really is a serious situation.” It might be an uphill battle and a very slow process but Sean hopes the Government will come on board eventually - “It probably won’t be for five or six years but I’m hopeful they will follow the lead set in Great Britain where they have a competent persons scheme for oil and solid fuel. Northern Ireland is talking about a competent person’s scheme in 2019/20 and I hope Irish legislators will follow.” Sean believes Ireland requires anywhere between 4,500 and 5,000 OFTEC registered technicians. “We are noticing a bit of a turnaround at the moment, with technicians coming back to us and wanting to be registered with OFTEC. This is down to the local authorities demanding OFTEC
registered technicians. The majority of technicians are coming back due to the commitment they have. They want to provide a quality service to the customer and they’re passionate about their work. So it’s moving in the right direction but we’d be a lot happier if it moved a bit quicker.” Property management companies are also starting to use OFTEC registered technicians but insurance companies have proved difficult to deal with. “We’ve had communications with insurance companies in relation to specifying OFTEC technicians only and reducing house insurance premiums for installations/ servicing work carried out by competent persons but to date we have had a negative response.” Sean believes that, as an industry, many consumers (and installers) have become complacent when it comes to maintaining safety and environmental standards. ” Sean believes that, as an industry, we’ve become complacent when it comes to maintaining safety standards. “We always think we know what we’re doing. As it stands, anyone can go into a merchant, buy an oil tank, drag it home and put it in. I’ve seen oil tanks connected with garden hoses. That has to stop.” When Sean isn’t taking calls from technicians or investigating incidents of CO, he likes to hop on his motorbike and blow off some steam. “I’ve been motorbiking for 20-odd years. When I had my own business I was involved with road racing and I sponsored a motorbike in that. I also enjoy a bit of gardening so between that and my family, I’m kept busy.” Sean and his wife have two kids - “My daughter Megan is going to do beauty therapy in a college in London and my son Danny is in Sydney. He’s a plumber over there. He had to go abroad for work because, at the time, there was just nothing here for him.” For Sean and OFTEC, 2016 is all about pushing awareness and calling for Government support. “This year is already proving extremely busy as technicians continue to come back to us and we maintain our awareness campaign. “It’s a rewarding job but also one that’s very frustrating but we’ll continue to highlight the important issues and keep on asking the government why they refuse to do anything about them.”

ingspan Titan, a global leader in Energy Storage Solutions, has just unveiled the very latest concept in slimline oil tanks. The new ESSL2000 has been designed to offer safe and secure heating oil storage at premises where space is limited and access restrictions may apply. The totally enclosed, bunded tank has a total footprint of only 2m² and was developed following consultation with key industry partners, including installer partners, oil distributors and heating oil consumers. “The ESSL2000 has one of the highest storage-to-footprint ratio of any oil tank on the market, so customers with limited space can now significantly increase the amount of oil they can store on-site,” said Adrian Gatford, Kingspan Titan Sales Director, GB. “What’s more, its slimline profile makes installation quick and simple, enabling contractors to manoeuvre and fit the tank into narrow spaces.” Titan EcoSafe tanks represent the most advanced range of integrally bunded oil storage systems available within Europe, and are designed to satisfy the needs of commercial facilities that require secure, fuel storage. They are also renowned for their robust construction and durability, which together with the integrated bund, helps safeguard oil supplies and prevents oil spills or ground contamination. Along with these attributes, the tanks feature a lockable lid for extra security. The ESSL2000 is the latest addition to

Gary Perry, Technical Director at Altecnic, raises concerns about an increase in substandard, non-compliant products flooding the market…
Substandard safety relief valves flood market
N
on-compliant products create problems for everyone in the industry, and with a recent flooding of the market we all should be concerned. In particular, we have seen a sharp increase in the number of plumbing professionals reporting issues after specifying substandard Safety Relief Valves (SRVs). Although, at first glance, the SRVs look like accredited products, on closer inspection these so called ‘looky-likey’ products are made of low grade materials which cause them to fail quickly after installation. An investigation by Altecnic’s technical department showed that these looky-likey safety relief valves are manufactured from low quality brass, and are likely to fail before the valve discharges at its set temperature. The plastic is also not suitable for hot water conditions and becomes brittle, causing damage. The metal is not suitable for wholesome water and can lead to the contamination of the main drinking supply. It is not only substandard materials that are causing major issues. Inferior manufacturing mean these SRVs are difficult to install, with poor calibration causing valves to discharge early or, even worse, too late. There is absolutely no room in the industry for unaccredited SRVs. These valves are a

crucial safety device, defending a system from overpressure which can turn a normal water heater or heating system into a potential domestic bomb. If one of these valves fails, the implications for both the user and the installer could be disastrous, especially if the plumber has installed a non-compliant product. In response to the increase in nonaccredited products available on the market, Altecnic has recently launched its new Triple A awareness campaign: ‘Accredited.Authentic.Altecnic.’ As responsible manufacturers, we are raising awareness amongst plumbing professionals about the importance of only specifying fully accredited and compliant products which meet WRAS, Buildcert, Kiwi and TMV approvals. The law clearly puts the responsibility of compliance in the hands of the installer and pleading ignorance is not a defence in the eyes of the court. By looking for Altecnic products on merchants’ shelves, plumbers can be assured they are choosing equipment that has been rigorously assessed and meets all current legislative requirements which legally covers them and represents the safest and best value option for their customers.

New Business Development Manager for Stelrad in Ireland
The Real Value Consortium
Energy storage project shows ‘real value’ An Irish consortium led by Glen Dimplex has set up a major EU-funded home-energy project called RealValue. It’s expected the results of the project will be felt over the next three years and they are expected to have a significant international and economic impact. Funded by Horizon 2020, a total of 1,250 homes in Ireland, Germany and Latvia will have Glen Dimplex electrical storage systems installed in them as part of the project. The aim is to demonstrate how these small-scale energy-storage systems can provide benefits to the whole electricity supply chain, from generation to distribution and from suppliers down to the consumers. The entire energy supply chain is working together on the project, from ESB Networks to Intel (the heating system in the home will be controllable from an app) and from EirGrid to SSE Electricity. The RealValue project has a total of 13 partners on board, including energy economists from UCD and businesses from both the public and private sector. The results of the project can be divided into two parts, between the customers running their home off the electricity grid and then the industry, which is supplying the energy and ensuring its distribution. Gas Networks Ireland’s 2016 Network Development plans As part of its 10-year Network Development Plan (NDP), Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) has sent a questionnaire to selected market participants so that the organisation can gather information for the preparation of the forthcoming NDP. Each year, GNI must make reasonable assumptions about the evolution of gas production, supply, consumption and exchanges with other countries for the NDP, which the questionnaire helps facilitate. The CER is asking persons or undertakings who consider themselves to be actual or potential system users and who have not been contacted by GNI at this stage to make themselves known. A CER consultation on GNI’s draft 10 year NDP will commence in July 2016. In the interim, any requests to be contacted by GNI regarding its questionnaire may be sent to dlindsay@cer.ie

Barnardos centres to save €30k in energy savings annually Ireland’s largest children’s charity, Barnardos, has received a donation and grant aid of €275,000 from SuperValu and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), to improve the energy efficiency of its family care centres around the country. The funds have allowed 22 centres in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Westmeath, Offaly, Carlow and Tipperary to make much needed upgrades to boilers and heating controls, roof and cavity wall insulation, low energy lighting, and air-to-water heat pumps. It’s estimated that this will save the charity approximately €30,000 a year in energy costs. T: (RoI) 01 808 2100 or (NI) 00353 1 808 2100 W: www.seai.ie
