everyone for their generosity.” Shine supports sufferers of spina bifida and hydrocephalus and their families, and was selected by firmus energy’s CSR committee as its charity of the year in early 2015. Along the route of the pipeline, more than 90% of major industrial businesses have converted to natural gas, with firmus energy now servicing more than 76,000 commercial and residential customers across the Province, and completing around 4,000 new connections each year. Paul added, “It was a very special

JOHNNY GOODE, COUNTRY MANAGER, IDEAL BOILERS EXPLAINS THE COMPANY’S FOCUS ON MANUFACTURING WITH INSTALLERS IN MIND…
Ideal Boilers made for installers I deal Boilers has been manufacturing in the UK for over 100 years and over this time has developed a comprehensive range of award-winning and reliable products for global markets, ranging from New Zealand to Turkey, designed with the installer and home-owner in mind. In addition, the company has been designing and producing Logic boilers specifically for the Irish market for over 35 years, and has had the No.1 selling boiler for the past three years. Ideal has developed the Logic System IE range of boilers, designed to address the specific needs of Irish installers - namely a low system pressure market.
LOGICAL SOLUTION The Logic System IE range benefits from being an ‘A’ rated appliance on the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland HARP (Home-heating Appliance Register of Performance) data base and, being easy to install, provides a simple and reliable solution for a wide variety of domestic systems. It includes a water flow sensor, fitted into the internal flow pipe assembly, to eliminate nuisance lockout and permit operation at low system pressures. The range is available in a choice of four outputs (15, 18, 24 and 30kW) and benefits from a lightweight design, concealed connections at the base and no compartment ventilation requirement, which means it can be conveniently fitted out of sight in a standard kitchen cupboard. Siting and installation are simple and hassle-free through a simple
telescopic flue option, push and clip flue turret connections and a wide range of alternative fluing solutions. The Logic System IE is fully modulating down to 4.8kW, includes boiler frost protection, half gas connection and precommissioned gas valve, and comes with a five-year parts and labour warranty as standard. Weather compensation kits are also available. It has a digital display and simple diagnostics, making problem-solving easier for householders and installers alike.
IN VOGUE In addition to the best-selling Logic System IE range, Ideal has developed the award-winning Vogue range, recently recommended through Facebook for
installer Allen Hart of CCH Leeds. He asked the 600+ industry members of his Facebook group Gas Chat, which 40kW combi boiler they would fit in their own house, with quality being the most important thing, and was impressed by the number of responses and comments recommending the Ideal Vogue. The Vogue boiler came out on top with over 25% of votes, recommended by more than 40 installers and receiving almost 400 comments about its outstanding reliability. Installers also shared their positive experiences of the boiler, with one saying “Vogue is the way to go”. Allen wanted the opinion of other gas engineers as they “know what they are

talking about.” He said, “The installation was quick and easy, everything about it makes it easy. The 10-year warranty was a key factor - it gives peace of mind that it’s going to be reliable and if there are any problems, Ideal is just a phone call away. “I like the quality of the boiler – as an engineer I look at the quality of the internal components, such as the stainless steel heat exchanger and brass parts. I’d definitely recommend the Vogue to other installers - it’s one of the best boilers I’ve ever fitted and I have it in my own house, which I think says it all really.” Allen recently joined forces with Ideal to put together a video for other installers and their customers, outlining his desire to install the best quality boiler in his own
home and explaining why he chose the Vogue. As part of the company’s ongoing commitment to giving installers all the tools they need to grow their business, the video can be viewed on Ideal’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/user/IdealHeatingLtd
BENEFITS In addition to the benefits highlighted in the YouTube video, installers can pick up additional servicing work from the home-owner-friendly service reminder on the boiler’s display, which installers can programme their phone number into, and which also displays full diagnostics for ease of fault finding. Installers also benefit by registering their
boilers through Ideal’s loyalty scheme, Installer Connect, with each Vogue being worth up to €30. Installer Connect is one of the most rewarding loyalty schemes in the industry, with features and benefits tailored specifically for installers. Points can be redeemed on whatever best suits the installer, from work wear and training courses, to High Street vouchers, city breaks and more. Installer Connect also facilitates the registration of Energy Credits (ranging from €275 to €450 per Ideal boiler, depending on controls used) as well as giving installers access to the exclusive Marketing Toolbox. Ideal Boilers are available through Irish distributor and warranty agent, Davies Ltd (based in Dublin).

Major growth leads to announcement of new Boucher Road store and two branch expansions…
Bassetts splashes out on new Belfast showroom
B
assetts has announced the autumn opening of a new store within the heart of the thriving Boucher Road retail area in Belfast, alongside showroom expansions in two of its local branches in County Londonderry, following a period of significant growth for the company. The new store opening will exclusively showcase Bassett’s high quality range of bathroom and tile designs in a unique designer showroom setting. In addition, expansions to the North West branches include new showroom openings at both locations, with Bassetts Coleraine doubling in size with the addition of a new bathroom showroom and the L’Derry branch launching the company’s first ever tile studio. The announcement marks a significant milestone for the leading local business which will soon boast a network of 14 branches across Northern Ireland. Managing Director of Bassetts, Alan
Wright, commented, “We are delighted to announce our plans to open a Boucher Road showroom in the coming weeks, alongside extensive branch expansions in L’Derry and Coleraine. Despite the difficulties that many national retailers may be facing in the home improvement market, our bathroom, plumbing and heating business has gone from strength to strength. In recent months, we have seen an increasing number of homeowners choosing to renovate or improve their homes, with 44% of homeowners fitting a new bathroom in the last three years. “A further half of all home-owners in Northern Ireland are also predicted to renovate their homes this year and that is a key reason why we are expanding our showrooms and opening a new Belfast store to meet an increasing demand for exclusive, high quality, affordable products. “The number of new homes being built

Northern Ireland Housing Executive has signed a contract with Saliis Ltd to install solar photo voltaic (PV) systems at 1,000 Housing Executive homes across Northern Ireland. The project is based on the ‘rent a roof’ model, in which tenants could save up to £200 per year on their energy bills. Turner & Townsend, the global programme management and construction consultancy, has been appointed to provide cost management services for two paediatric outpatient and urgent care satellite centres being developed by the New Children’s Hospital in Dublin. Leading multi-service provider, the Precision Group, is celebrating the company’s most successful year on record, with a record £10 million turnover following an intensive period of restructuring, investment and acquisitions.
Potential for district heating in Dublin city A major study by Dublin’s energy agency, Codema has found that there is huge potential for the roll-out of district heating in the city, with over 75% of the areas analysed deemed suitable for this type of heating system. The Dublin City Spatial Energy Demand Analysis is the first such detailed study to be carried out on the potential for district heating for the city, which involves the delivery of heat to numerous buildings across the city via a pipe network from large, highly-efficient renewable or sustainablyfuelled heat plants. The report found over 140 small areas with very high heat densities suitable for a district heating network, all of which are located within 2.5 kilometres of the city centre. It also identified potential waste heat sources which could feed low-cost heat into a district heating network, thereby reducing heating costs and increasing efficiencies. The heat demand density is highest in areas where there is high commercial activity but there are also many residential areas in the city that are deemed very suitable for district heating schemes. Along with district heating, the report analysed the potential for incorporating renewable energy sources such as geothermal, wind and solar energy in the city. The Dublin City Spatial Energy Demand Analysis is the first city-wide study of its kind to be carried out in Ireland. It aims to connect traditional city planning with effective strategies for sustainable energy so that specific areas can be targeted and the use of renewable energy sources in the city can be assessed. OFTEC NEWS
OFTEC IRELAND NEWS... OFTEC IRELAND WORKS HARD ON BEHALF OF THE OIL HEATING AND COOKING INDUSTRY. PLUMBING & HEATING PROVIDES AN INSIGHT INTO WHAT THE TEAM HAS BEEN UP TO…
New solid fuel training and assessment courses OFTEC technicians have seen a rise in the number of trendy stoves installed in the home and are now increasingly being called upon to install and service solid fuel appliances. OFTEC has responded to the latest trend by developing a bespoke solid fuel training and assessment course. A pilot of the new course was held recently at METAC in Ireland, and the OFT15-108(D) and OFT15-108(W) are now available for solid fuel installers. A number of counter hand courses have already been run at METAC, and plumbers merchants and solid fuel retailers are now ready to promote OFTEC registered solid fuel installers. If you install or service solid fuel appliances you could benefit from this registration. If you are already OFTEC registered and hold an equivalent qualification, you can add the solid fuel scope for only £50 or €65. OFTEC is currently establishing a new solid fuel register of qualified heating technicians that merchants can promote to consumers. To apply for OFTEC’S registration scheme or for more information visit www.oftec.org.uk/technicians/apply-for-solid-fuel-registration
Industry unites for Carbon Monoxide awareness OFTEC is once again working to raise awareness of the dangers of Carbon Monoxide throughout Ireland. During October, OFTEC supported the annual Carbon Monoxide Awareness week in the Republic of Ireland. OFTEC is also throwing its weight behind Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Month in Northern Ireland in November, in association with the Health & Safety Executive (HSENI). David Blevings, OFTEC Ireland Manger said, “Carbon Monoxide is traditionally associated with gas appliances. However, our technicians have noted that there is very limited awareness in Ireland of the risks posed by other fuels. “We are issuing advice to consumers across Ireland reminding them to use an OFTEC registered technician for all home heating installation and service work tstandards.” W: www.carbonmonoxide.ie W: watchout.hseni.gov.uk/index/carbon-monoxide.htm
OFTEC and members promote a pro-oil message Several Irish manufacturing members have worked together to promote a pro-oil message to consumers, reminding them that “oil is cheaper”. The campaign brings together Grant, Firebird, Warmflow, Kingspan and Harlequin, and is supported by Riello. The pro-oil advert appeared in the Belfast Telegraph in October in the home heat supplement. It is proposed that this marketing committee will look at pushing out the “oil is cheaper” message across the island of Ireland in 2016 and build into a bigger and better campaign to retain oil customers and promote the benefits of upgrading to an oil condensing boiler.
Re-certification package launched With the five-year anniversary of the OFT10 suite of oil assessments upon us, OFTEC’s training department has just designed a re-certification package for technicians re-taking oil assessments. Covering re-certification for the OFT10-101 (pressure jet), OFT10-102D/W (vaporising), OFT10-105E (appliance/system installation) and the OFT10-600a (tank and supply installation), the package will mean spending less time in a training centre, allowing technicians to get back to work more quickly. The re-certification package went live from September 1, and to find details of your local approved centre please visit www.oftec.org/Technicians/ OftecApprovedTrainingCentres

Before joining the Register, he worked for Bord Gáis for 38 years. “I began my career in Bord Gáis as a gas fitter and held various roles over the 38 years, including inspection manager and technical training manager.” Moving to RGII was a natural progression for William. “Registration was on a voluntary basis when I was inspection manager at Bord Gais but then moved onto the new regulations body (RGII), so really it was the right time to move on.” William is the second generation Wilson with a passion for safety in the gas industry. His father, also called William, clocked up 52 years in Bord Gáis before retiring.
“My father was 13 when he began his career at Bord Gáis. Like myself, he started his career as a gas fitter and finished as a training manager. It really was lovely to follow him into the gas industry. It was a great career then and I believe it still is.” William was 16 years of age when he followed in his father’s footsteps by joining Bord Gáis as an apprentice gas fitter. “For my first four years I was employed by Alliance & Dublin Consumers’ Gas Company, as it was then referred to. I was a supervisor in the conversion to natural gas process in the 80s. After that I became a training manager, looking after all the technical training for gas fitters and contractors both on the distribution side and the installation side.”

With so few apprentices being taken on right across the industry, William believes this is about to change. “I think at one stage plumbing apprenticeships were up to about 600 per year; this dropped down to about 50 at the height of the recession but I think it’s starting to pick up again. We at the RGII are currently looking at facilitating an apprenticeship scheme for gas installers. Gas Networks Ireland (as Bord Gáis Networks is now known) is also starting to take on apprentices again. We’re looking at the age profile of our Registered Gas Installers which is probably top heavy. A lot of them will be retiring in the coming years so we need some young blood coming in to take over that side of work.” The current Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week is the fourth year of the campaign. As in previous years, the aim of the campaign is to highlight the fact that carbon monoxide (CO) can and does, kill. “The advertising campaign went very well. I think people are becoming much more aware of it. As a member of the Technical Standards Committee TC2 for gas installations, we’ve included in IS 813 - our national standard for domestic gas installation - the requirement to fit carbon monoxide alarms when fitting flueless or open flue appliances. The
building regulations also now require carbon monoxide alarms to be fitted in all new builds, so there’s definitely more awareness around the issue. “I’ve noticed with Registered Gas Installers that they’re promoting the use of carbon monoxide alarms and, where required, they’re fitting them to conform to the standards.” The carbon monoxide awareness campaign stresses that any fossil fuel can cause carbon monoxide – coal, turf, oil, gas or even wood. On average, six people in Ireland die every year as a result of unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning. Prevention through the competent installation and regular maintenance and servicing of fuel burning appliances is crucial, and this is something the RGII is very keen to promote. “Prevention is obviously better than cure. By having your gas boiler and gas appliances correctly installed in well ventilated areas, properly repaired and serviced annually by Registered Gas Installers (RGIs), the risks of exposure to CO poisoning are greatly reduced. An audible carbon monoxide alarm should also be installed where the fuel burning appliances is fitted and another within 5 meters of the bedrooms.” It’s not just the RGII that’s involved in
the awareness week; it’s supported by organisations across the energy sector and related industries as well as safety and public health bodies including the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), Gas Networks Ireland, Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC), National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) and major Irish energy retailers. When William isn’t spending time with his wife Colette and their two children Simon and Lauren, you’ll most likely find him on the racetrack. He has been involved in racing motorcycles and mentoring younger riders since 1974. “I run a race team and have two young riders who race for me. I also race a 350 Honda Classic myself and have a Kawasaki 650. We race on all the national circuits like Mondello, Bishops Court and Kirkistown and I also race in all the road races like Kells, Skerries, Killalane, Walderstown the North West, the Ulster Grand Prix etc.” Luckily, William has only had two minor crashes in his career. “I’ve certainly been lucky in that I’ve only come off the bike a couple of times. The adrenalin rush is incredible. When you’re racing and the roads are closed you can get up to incredible speeds. There’s nothing like it!”

Gas leak detection for boiler rooms in commercial and industrial properties from Modern Plant…
Excellence in gas detection
N
atural and LPG gas are the most widely used fuels for heating commercial and industrial property. In the event of an undetected leak it can present an explosive risk leading to structural damage, the loss of life and an expensive waste of fuel. Most boiler plant rooms are usually unmanned and, therefore, any leak could go undetected for quite some time. An automatic gas detection system will provide early warning of a gas release during unmanned periods. Boiler plant rooms are designed with ventilation to ensure that there is an adequate supply of combustion air. The ventilation also assists in reducing the build up of any flammable gas concentration. However, this cannot be guaranteed. It is for this very reason that gas detection systems should be installed. Modern Plant represents Medem (UK), a company that designs and builds gas safety systems suitable for use in boiler houses and plant rooms. There are a number of specifically designed systems currently available - single or two channel (AGDS2em), four channel (AGDS-4), multi-channel (AGDS-MC) and their multi-function solution (SEC-B) which not only offers multi-sensor leak detection but pressure proving, electrical isolation and auto re-start after power failure. The AGDS-2em is a gas detection system designed for use in boiler houses and pellet stores. Up to two low voltage sensors can be connected for the detection of natural gas, LPG or carbon monoxide. In the event

of a high alarm from one of the sensors, the system will isolate a connected control valve. It can also be used for CO monitoring of pellet storage rooms. Low alarm indication is also given. Panel controls include ‘Mute’, ‘Reset’ and ‘Emergency Stop’ buttons. Remote emergency stop buttons can be fitted and a fire alarm connected to close the gas valve when activated. High alarm change over relay can be used to control remote indications or connect to a BMS system.
SENSORS The AGDS-4 is a gas detection system designed for use in boiler houses and plant rooms. Up to four low voltage sensors for the detection of natural gas, LPG or carbon monoxide can be connected to the panel. In the event of a high alarm from one of the sensors, the system will isolate/close any connected valve. Low alarm indication is also given. Panel controls include ‘Mute’, ‘Reset’ and ‘Emergency Stop’ buttons. Additional remote emergency stop buttons can be fitted and a fire alarm connected to close the gas valve when activated. High alarm change over relays can be used to control remote indications or connect to a BMS system. The AGDS-MC gas detection system has been designed for use in a variety of applications. Up to 16 low voltage sensors for the detection of natural gas, oxygen depletion, LPG or carbon monoxide can be connected to the panel. In the event of a high alarm from one of the sensors,
the system will isolate the gas supply by closing a connected valve. A pre alarm indication is also given. The LCD will display appropriate information about alarm situations and detector status etc. High alarm change over relays can be used to control remote indications or connect to a BMS system. The product is also available in a “nonlatching” mode for the control of ventilation systems i.e. indoor car parks on CO detection. The SEC-B is a multi-function solution designed for boiler rooms that offer gas proving, gas detection, electrical isolation and auto-restart after power failure. The SEC-B has been designed to accept a multiple of gas detectors including natural and LPG gases along with carbon monoxide. Isolation of gas will occur upon detection of the target gases at prescribed levels. Using the patented differential pressure proving method, the system checks the gas pipe work and appliances in a boiler house for gas leaks. It also monitors for low pressure and over pressure without opening the solenoid valve, making it the only truly safe method of proving available. The SEC-B can auto reset after an electricity supply failure when used in boiler room applications. This enables a building heating system to restart without manual intervention, minimising the chance of frozen pipes and a cold building. OWEN WILSON, NETWORKS SAFETY MANAGER AT GAS NETWORKS IRELAND BELIEVES THE PUBLIC IS FINALLY REALISING THE DANGERS OF CARBON MONOXIDE …
Getting the message across
P
art of Ervia, Gas Networks Ireland ensures that over 673,000 homes and businesses receive a safe, efficient and secure supply of natural gas, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The company owns, operates, builds and maintains the natural gas network in Ireland, and connects all customers to the network. It also transports natural gas through its 13,000km pipeline network. With pipelines in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man, Gas Networks Ireland transports gas on behalf of suppliers and shippers to over 23,000 businesses and almost 650,000 homes. For the past 11 years, Owen Wilson has worked in safety and he currently holds the position of Networks Safety Manager at Gas Networks Ireland. He is responsible for the company’s occupational health and safety teams and also manages its public safety advertising campaigns. “We run five campaigns, including Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week,” said Owen. “We also run a campaign highlighting what to do if you smell natural gas, and a smaller campaign called ‘Dial before you Dig’, which highlights the dangers of underground gas pipelines. Only last year, we also launched a campaign that focuses on the dangers of meter tampering. Owen believes that Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week is doing its job and getting the message across. “We’ve been highlighting the dangers of Carbon Monoxide for over 10 years, and what we’ve seen is a relatively high awareness of its dangers. Each year we do an annual public consumer awareness survey and every time we do it we ask the question, are you aware of the dangers of Carbon Monoxide? Results show that over 90% of respondents are. However, when we ask more detailed questions we discover much lower levels of awareness. People know it’s dangerous, but they don’t know why it’s dangerous.” The current high profile campaign is driving home the message. “We believe the public has started to realise that all fuel causes Carbon Monoxide. The idea that only gas produces it has been a popular myth for years, but that’s changing now. The number of people who have a Carbon Monoxide

“Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week is doing its job and getting the message across.” alarm is also rising,” said Owen. Owen is a civil and structural engineer by profession. Originally from Aberdeen, he entered the oil and gas industry as a consultant. “I spent eight and a half years working as a pipeline and sub-sea engineering consultant for some of the major oil companies over there. I married an Irish woman and moved to Ireland to work for Bord Gáis Networks, as it was called at the time,” he added. With a long-standing interest in pipelines, Bord Gáis Networks was the obvious choice. “It’s a very varied role,” continued Owen. “My team and I deal with a huge range of things, from everyday budgets to going out on sites and inspecting contractors, carrying out risk
assessments and investigating accidents.” If you had told Owen as a graduate he’d be involved in making an ad about an animated singing canary, he may not have believed you. “The advertising campaigns are one of the more diverse parts of the job which I really enjoy. The process of making adverts, for example, Tommy McAnairey the singing canary, highlighting the dangers of Carbon Monoxide, is absolutely fascinating. It’s a very different line of work but there are things you can take from it and implement into your own role.” T: (RoI) 1850 200 694 or (NI) 00353 66 9791962 E: networksinfo@gasnetworks.ie W: www.gasnetworks.ie

STEVENSON & REID REFURBISHES COOKSTOWN BRANCH TO LAUNCH LATEST STUDIO BATHROOMS SHOWROOM…
Studio Bathrooms capture the look
S
tevenson & Reid has opened its latest Studio Bathrooms showroom, following a major refurbishment at its Cookstown branch. Modelled on the highly successful Studio Bathrooms at the company’s Ballymena branch, the Cookstown showroom is the latest enhancement to the offering from this leading plumbers’ merchant, which reflects a significant investment by the company to keep it at the cutting edge of the industry. “The new showroom provides a stunning showcase for our extensive range of bathrooms,” said Paul Maguire, Showroom Manager. “There are 18 full-sized bathroom settings, all completely fitted out, to give
customers a much better idea of what their dream bathroom will look like. It’s very helpful for people who find it hard to visualise the finished look. “Built to full-size dimensions, each pod is like opening the door to a bathroom which looks just like it would in a home. It’s a good concept to enable us to show customers the end look. “We have also added a working display section which enables customers to actually see how the products work - while they are browsing round the displays they can look at a shower or a whirlpool bath in action, or even see how the waterproof TV works.” The refurbishment has also enabled
Stevenson & Reid to extend its range of tiling, with a brand new display area dedicated to presenting an easily viewed selection to help make buying decisions easier. With such a well-stocked showroom, the new refurbishment brings added benefits to plumbers who can now direct their customers directly to the new Bathroom Studio, to allow them to see the wide choice on offer and help them visualise how a welldesigned bathroom can transform a home. Located just 100 yards from the town centre, the Cookstown branch is easily accessible and now offers a one-stop-shop for anyone wishing to install a new bathroom. g

tevenson & Reid is a company that knows how to meet a range of needs for a diverse customer base. However, this isn’t a case of the company being a ‘jack of all trades, master of none’. On the contrary, it is more a perfect example of providing an array of specialists services to the highest standards – a fact Stevenson & Reid is proud of. A lot of this success comes down to the fact that Stevenson & Reid is a family business and one of the independent plumbers’ merchants in Northern Ireland. This independence provides an unrivalled degree of flexibility when compared to the multinationals. The fact that the company has almost 40 years’ experience in the industry and boasts seven branches across the province speaks volumes about its strength.
But as well as offering a high level of service at competitive prices to installers, the company also has the expertise to offer contract support for large domestic and commercial projects. The contracts team is based in the Belfast branch has worked on projects across Northern Ireland, Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland, including schools, hotels, hospitals, leisure centres, shopping developments and social housing. The contracts team specialises in distributing quality, cost-effective solutions to meet all contract requirements, regardless of the project size or demands of the specification. Introducing GLO+
S
een by many as the benchmark in underfloor heating, GLO has just got even better, with the launch of GLO+, available from bathroom, heating and tile specialist, Bassetts. The system is fully compatible with all domestic, commercial and renewable applications - gas condensing boilers, oil condensing boilers, air source heat pumps, bio mass and geo thermal heat pumps – and is perfect for new builds, extensions and renovations. GLO+ uses the latest underfloor heating design system on the market. Improvements include increased accuracy and ease of installation, as it allows areas to be allocated to certain manifolds within the design programme. A printed schedule gives a breakdown of each of the manifolds (eg room type, number of circuits, pipe spacing etc), with a full AutoCAD systems drawing now available for commercial projects. Good design is the key to performance and this is where GLO+ is competitive, offering value for money and return on investment through optimised performance with longterm economies. GLO+ uses only best quality PeX-A pipe, manufactured to DIN EN 4726 with an EVOH oxygen diffusion barrier to DIN EN 12318, and carries a 50-year guarantee. Every

circuit has an individual flow meter, allowing the system to be hydraulically balanced, and this extra control results in optimised performance. GLO+ floor heating systems are designed for comfort and economy, and have the effect of reducing draughts normally associated with conventional heating systems. As a minimum, the system provides individual temperature control in every room, but it also offers a range of weather compensation control systems to suit most buildings. Since floor heating is installed under the floor surface there are no hard edges or high temperatures to bump into or fall against. These features have resulted in floor heating being the system of choice in nursery schools and homes for the elderly, where ‘low surface temperatures’ on heating appliances are a legal requirement. Again with safety in mind, GLO+ floor heating system uses low voltage controls eliminating risk of electrical injury at room thermostats and manifolds.
CONTROLS The GLO+ control system is one of the most up-to-date systems on the market. With the option of internet controls, users can operate the system via their iPhone, iPad, windows PC, Mac and many more applications. GLO+
room thermostats can be hard wired or wireless and are self-modulating, meaning that the flow in the underfloor heating circuits is continually optimised, based on the needs of that room. This provides better comfort and efficiency than other manufacturers using on/off technology. GLO+ is the only system on the market that uses this technology. WITH ERP IN FULL SWING, NEIL GAFFNEY, MANAGING DIRECTOR, VOKÈRA IRELAND GIVES AN OVERVIEW OF THE NEW SYSTEM LABELLING PROCEDURE AND HOW CONTROLS FIT INTO THE NEW LEGISLATION…
Controlling ErP C
ontrols can provide installers with an effective way of making a boiler more efficient and, more importantly, improve the energy performance rating under ErP. Following the introduction of the European legislation, boilers are now required to have energy performance labels, rated from G to A+++, clearly visible on the product to show customers how efficient they are. When installing a boiler, installers need to create an energy label for the whole heating system via a fiche. To achieve a B rating, the whole system (or package) needs to reach above 82% efficiency, over 90% for an A rating, and to reach an A+ the complete system needs to provide an efficiency rating of 98% and upwards. As manufacturers will have to supply the energy efficiency figures for their products, calculating the whole system efficiency will be as simple as adding together the different percentages of the components used in the system to generate an overall figure. The total will then translate into a single energy performance rating for the whole heating system. The ErP Directive covers all products that consume energy, such as boilers, heat pumps, solar thermal etc. By adding controls, the whole system can be made more efficient and will improve the rating. Controls will not carry an ErP label but they have been split into eight groups under the directive, with each group adding an efficiency percentage to the space heating system rating. Each control class equates to a certain percentage uplift in system efficiency - for example, a Class VI weather compensating control and room thermostat will add 4% efficiency to the heating system.
CONTROL CLASSES The control classes are broken down as follows: • Class I: On/off room thermostat. The package/system space heating uplift = 1% • Class II: Weather compensator control, for use with modulating heaters. The package/system space heating uplift = 2% • Class III: Weather compensator control, for use with on/off output heaters. The package/system space heating uplift = 1.5%

• Class IV: TPI room thermostat, for use with on/off output heaters. The package/ system space heating uplift = 2% • Class V: Modulating room thermostat, for use with modulating heaters. The package/system space heating uplift = 3% • Class VI: Weather compensator and room sensor, for use with modulating heaters. The package/system space heating uplift = 4% • Class VII: Weather compensator and room sensor, for use with on/off output heaters. The package/system space heating uplift = 3.5% • Class VIII: Multi-sensor room temperature control, for use with modulating heaters. The package/system space heating uplift = 5%. By combining one of these eight groups of controls, installers can create an uplift in energy efficiency for home-owners. Take for example the Unica i32 combi boiler, which boasts a seasonal space heating efficiency
rating of 94%. Under the ErP Directive, adding a weather compensation sensor and modulating room sensor (Vokèra’s 711 OpenTherm RF programmable room thermostat) to the Unica i32 gives a 4% efficiency uplift, taking the whole package to 98% space heating efficiency. This equates to an A+ energy rating, and makes it one of the most efficient boiler and controls combinations available on the market. The addition of even simple controls to a heating system can provide home-owners with reduced energy and costs, while offering installers a business opportunity to sell controls with a new boiler. If everyone understands how controls can help energy performance ratings and can demonstrate these savings, it is easier to pass on the benefits. hen first established in 1974, Hevac gained an immediate reputation for the diversity of its product portfolio, and especially for the quality of the products from the marketleading brands the company represented. Over the years this reputation has been further strengthened because of the continuous addition of new product lines and additional suppliers. De Dietrich, the world-renowned manufacturer of pioneering heating technology solutions, is a typical example. A symbol of quality since 1778, De Dietrich is committed to the development of Sustainable Comfort®, the objective of which is to create innovative heating systems that consume less energy and preserve the environment. As exclusive De Dietrich distributors in Ireland, Hevac has forged a very strong relationship with the company, thereby making a wealth of innovative product, and technology, available on the Irish market. As part of that knowledge transfer process Hevac runs regular in-house training seminars for both installers and consultants, and also takes them to the De Dietrich Training School in Mertzwiller, France. The objective is to enhance their general boiler knowledge and skills but, more specifically, to improve their understanding of condensing systems, condensing applications, and water treatment for condensing boilers.

orcester, Bosch Group has developed the easiest and most cost-effective way for installers to offer their customers the very highest efficiency levels. The European Commission’s decision to award an uplift of 4% in efficiency for the addition of a combined weather and load compensation control to a system means that it is now much easier for plumbing and heating professionals to create an A+ rated system. Previously, the required 98% efficiency rating would have been achievable only through the complex and costly combination of a number of different products; a boiler, a controller, a 400-litre thermal cylinder and 4m2 solar thermal panels, for example. However, Worcester is constantly attempting to find new ways of refining its products, and the high efficiency of its latest generation of combi boilers means that this is now possible through the combination of just two products installed in one simple system. Each of Worcester’s Greenstar i, Greenstar Si and CDi Compact combi boilers boast A-rated status, with guaranteed efficiency levels of 94%. In other words, thanks to the premium efficiency levels of Worcester appliances, the addition of a control offering a 4% uplift is all that is required to achieve the 98% heating efficiency necessary for an A+ rating. Developed through extensive feedback from installers and end-users, the new Greenstar i boasts improved heating and hot water outputs, alongside a host of other features, such as a larger condensate siphon, a pre-assembled wall frame and a new digital rolling text display.

FULL CONTROL In order to achieve this 4% uplift in efficiency, a control must meet the criteria listed in Class VI of the ErP Directive controls classification. This means a control must use a weather compensator in collaboration with a room sensor, taking temperature readings from the outside and the inside of a property to calculate the optimum temperature at which the boiler should be fired. Last year, Worcester added the Wave smart thermostat to its extensive product portfolio, offering installers the chance to integrate sophisticated heating and hot water controllability into homes nationwide. The Wave combines a room thermostat and programmable control in one stylish unit, with a free and easy-to-use app allowing
home-owners to take complete control of their heating and hot water systems, wherever they might be. Launching the Wave made Worcester the UK’s only manufacturer to offer a Weather and Load Compensating room thermostat with internet connectivity to offer a 4% uplift in energy efficiency. This provides heating engineers with the easiest and most cost-effective way of delivering an A+ efficiency system to homes up and down the country through the combination of just two products. This incredibly simple but remarkably efficient heating and hot water solution not only ensures that creating an A+ rated system is simpler than the costly fitting together of a number of separate products, but also makes better financial sense for home-owners too - helping to reduce installation time and cut costs on energy bills for years to come. Saturn Heating that merchants throughout Ireland become part of the Saturn Heating family. “It is quite incredible when you think that most of the condensing oil boilers on the market today use a combination of mild steel and stainless steel to produce their heat exchangers,” said Stephen Duffy of Saturn Heating Technologies. “All condensing boilers produce a condensate or vapour that is highly corrosive and so not generally suited to mild steel. The Saturn NHC uses an all-stainless steel high efficiency heat exchanger that is designed to handle the corrosive condensate. The NHC is also the only boiler to include a neutralising filter and trap to treat the corrosive condensate.” Saturn Heating says the resulting NHC Condensing oil boiler range is like no other oil boiler on the
market. The company is confident that the NHC range will not only deliver a long service life and save Irish home-owners money and energy but that it will also inspire people to think about this type of product before they have one installed in their home. Saturn Heating is also planning to release a new outdoor boiler in January 2016. The NHC Boiler uses an all stainless steel condensing heat exchanger, the only one of its kind available on the market today. Saturn NHC Condensing Oil Boilers also have intuitive controls that can be remotely located in the home to allow simple and energy-efficient management of the boiler and its controls. Available through the company’s merchant network from January 2016 onwards, this more aesthetically pleasing solution will bring consistency across the Saturn brand, with all of Saturn solutions finished to the highest standard, reflecting the build quality on the inside, on the outside. Supreme design from Firebird
L
ooking to preempt future European efficiency and NOx emission targets, Firebird has unveiled what is claimed to be the most energyefficient domestic oil fired boiler on the market. The new Enviromax Blue Supreme is a condensing boiler that features a low NOx MHG burner and a patented heat recovery unit to improve combustion and maximise energy efficiency. The Blue Flame technology is achieved by atomising heating oil at high pressure before it is mixed with pre-warmed air and ignited. Hot combustion gases are then re-circulated through the burner blast tube through a specially designed slot which in turn concentrates the burner flame in one area and reduces the overall NOx levels. The result is a flame that produces soot-free combustion along with reduced consumption of heating oil and low emission levels. For flexible replacement of existing installations, the boiler features four trappings (two on each side) while maintenance is made easier by digital controls that provide fault diagnostics and operational history, as well as operating as an anti-cycling device and preventing pump overrun. The boiler is available in three models – kitchen, boilerhouse and external heatpac, with two fixed outputs, 20 and 26kW. Rated the most efficient boiler in Europe, and No.1 by The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) the Firebird Enviromax Supreme is futureproofed and already ErP-ready to meet these new regulations. Firebird also offers an extensive range of other high-performing Enviromax condensing oil boilers, boasting SEDBUK Band A efficiency, and delivering up to 25% savings in fuel consumption, compared with non-condensing boilers. Alongside its renowned oil fired boilers and back boilers, Firebird offers a wide range of additional products, including solar thermal systems, biomass boilers, range cookers and multi-fuel inset stoves, designed and manufactured using the latest heating technology from its base in Cork. DAMIAN DELANEY, TRAINING MANAGER AT BAXI POTTERTON MYSON, EXPLAINS WHY IT’S WORTH INVESTING IN SPECIALIST TRAINING…
Training: invest to impress
B
oiler product training – offered free by most leading manufacturers – should really be regarded as part and parcel of an engineer’s working life. But the generic paid-for courses on offer can also pay dividends. Courses of this type enable engineers to expand their knowledge on different types of boilers. This often results in an increase in efficiency and profitability for their business, so can actually be considered an investment. As a day’s training means taking a day away from work, engineers should research what’s on offer to ensure the course they choose will be worthwhile. For instance, check how practical the course will be, and find out about the trainer’s credentials, course flexibility and class size. Topic-wise, there are many options to choose from, from low carbon technologies to central heating controls wiring. Three of our most popular courses are on how a combi boiler works, multi-meter training and boiler diagnostics. A boiler training course will help heating installers to fully understand how all the components and functions of a boiler work together. It will examine how a boiler differs to other gas appliances, its installation requirements, commissioning process, the operating sequence, and the function and operation of the principal components. Heating engineers, installers and maintenance engineers who require a greater understanding of electrics would benefit from attending a multi-meter training course. Courses are designed to ensure attendees can confidently use an electrical multi-meter, carry out preliminary electrical safety checks and component electrical tests, identify faults and isolate circuits safely. Finally, attending a boiler diagnostics course will enable an installer to diagnose and remedy faults through following logical paths and by analysing a boiler’s sequence of operation. All our trainers are former heating engineers, and our courses are designed to be practical, interactive and flexible, with the training groups purposefully kept small. Vaillant showcases the future of housebuilding with integration of hybrid systems Vaillant is helping to showcase how future homes can afford to integrate renewable technologies with a pioneering project in partnership with Wienerberger, a leading provider of wall, roof and landscaping innovations. The project is the first e4 brick house and was officially opened at BRE’s prestigious Innovation Park, as part of the park’s 10th anniversary celebrations. The home, which features a Vaillant aroTHERM hybrid system consisting of a gas boiler and air source heat pump, will be the first to be assessed to BRE’s new Home Quality Mark, which was launched earlier this year at Ecobuild. The house utilises a fabric first approach using a clay building envelope and the concept can be used for a wide range of sizes and typologies. Installed by Matrix Energy Systems, Vaillant’s ecoTEC pro boiler will meet the home’s hot water needs, while the aroTHERM air source heat pump will provide the space heating required, which is being delivered through a combination of underfloor heating and radiators. Vaillant’s aroTHERM hybrid system combines the reassurance of a traditional boiler system with the cost-saving credentials of an air to water heat pump. Uniting both technologies, the aroTHERM hybrid incorporates a unique controller system which works based on the homeowner’s individual energy tariff. Have you got a smart technology solution for Building Energy Ratings? The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), in co-operation with Enterprise Ireland has called on innovative companies to develop smart technology solutions to help make Building Energy Ratings (BER) more informative for homeowners. Funding of up to €150,000 is available under the competition titled ‘Small Business Innovation Research’. Smart solutions, such as advanced mobile technology, can help make BERs a more influential factor in property purchase and rental decisions, and also better inform home upgrade opportunities. Valid for 10 years, a BER certificate also gives builders, developers, vendors and landlords an incentive to upgrade the energy performance of the building by giving visible credit to superior standards. Solutions are expected to go well beyond the current BER certificate and advisory report and should include recommendations for clever use of mobile technology in influencing consumer behaviour. They may relate to single home BERs and/or comparators to national datasets. Full details are available on eTenders http://bit.ly/1QCz3LH

SMART CONTROLS
GREGG COLE, VAILLANT’S COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR, DISCUSSES BEST PRACTICE GUIDELINES ON SPECIFYING SMART CONTROLS, AND ADVISES INSTALLERS ON HOW TO REMOVE ANY BARRIERS TO SALE…
“The Vaillant vSMART control can also be retrofitted to any Vaillant eBUS appliance.”
There’s smart… then there’s vSMART
A
s the ‘Internet of Things’ flourishes, smart heating systems are growing in popularity as consumers seek extra functionality in their home appliances. As such, installers must be able to confidently specify the right control for the job. Enthusiasm around the idea of the ‘Internet of Things’ has grown considerably in recent years, driven by mobile access to the internet, coupled with the rapid growth of smartphone ownership; industry experts predict the number of connected devices could be anywhere from 20 billion to 100 billion by 2020. As a result, home-owners expect all of their devices to talk to each other to add value to what were previously mundane objects; this even extends to heating systems, which can now be controlled remotely through smart controls and apps.

FOLLOW US ON:
CONNECTING WHAT COUNTS Specifying a control is much like specifying a boiler - it’s clearly important in both cases to understand what motivates the customer to purchase. Considering these factors will help you to decide on the right control and explain the benefits that will interest your customer the most, increasing the chances of success when upselling. Installers can ask themselves a couple of questions to identify which type of control is most suitable for the home-owner. 1 How comfortable is the home-owner with technology? Most app-based controls have a simple, intuitive interface so only require a basic technological knowledge to operate. As an example, Vaillant’s vSMART simple installation wizard is controlled by moving sliders between yes/no answers, or selecting times and dates from a drop-down menu. However, there are other options which do not require a smartphone app, but still have many intelligent features, such as weather compensation. The Vaillant VRC 470f is a great example. 2. What lifestyle factors will influence the decision? Many people today lead very fluid lifestyles, especially young professionals, which traditional on/off controls may not be suited to. For example, if a home-owner often arrives home at different times, or is required to travel with work at short notice, an appbased control is the ideal solution. While the control adapts its settings to the homeowner’s schedule, this can be overridden away from the home via the app, to avoid
heating an empty home if they expect to arrive home late. If an app control is not appropriate, there are varying levels of intelligent control that are available, depending on the flexibility required. Mid-range options, such as the Vaillant VRT range, are suited to homeowners who want more control over their thermal comfort and energy efficiency, but whose schedules are more static.
REMOVING THE BARRIERS Controls have varying set-up times and complexities. Choosing one which requires a smaller scope of work, shorter set-up time and fewer wires, will be less intimidating to a customer who is undecided about purchasing a control. From an installer’s perspective, the benefits are clear - less time on one job means more for the next. As reassurance, and for familiarity for installers, the control brand’s heritage can also be an important factor. The new vSMART control is built with Vaillant’s 140 years of experience in heating, hot water and renewables behind it, which is a strong selling point for home-owners interested in efficiency, savings and comfort. The Vaillant vSMART control can also be retrofitted to any Vaillant eBUS appliance, allowing you to accommodate a homeowner’s desire to have the most up-to-date controls on the market. ALTECNIC LEADS THE WAY WITH THE NEW 533H, PART OF ITS MARKET-LEADING RANGE OF DOMESTIC AND SEMICOMMERCIAL PRESSURE REDUCING VALVES…...
Altecnic puts the pressure on with new PRVs D
esigned for domestic and semicommercial applications, the series 533 range of pressure reducing valves from Altecnic has received a great response from the industry since its recent launch. As part of Altecnic’s 533 range, the WRAS approved 533H benefits from an increased working temperature of 80°C and maximum inlet pressure of 16 bar, improved flow rate, quieter operation noise and EN1567 certification. With its ability to safely reduce and stabilise high-pressured mains water and prevent excessive outlet pressure of both hot and cold water, the high-performance PRV is part of Altecnic’s Triple A campaign, ‘Authentic, Accredited, Altecnic’, aimed at raising industry standards and promoting the use of fully certified and accredited products. “Mains water is increasingly being used instead of traditional low-pressure gravity fed systems,” explained Mark Mogey, OEM National Sales Manager, Altecnic. “The higher pressure associated with this means plumbers and installers should ensure they’re only installing fully accredited, high performance PRVs, such as the 533H – otherwise, in the event of failure, they can be held wholly responsible.” The introduction of the new 533H will also enhance what is already a popular product
in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. “This has proved to be a highly successful PRV and is well established in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland,” Mark added. “But we never rest on our laurels at Altecnic and, despite the success of this product, we are always looking at ways to improve. “The introduction of the 533H recognises the demands faced within the industry and provides a solution. With WRAS approval and EN1567 certification, it also strongly endorses our campaign to educate installers about the benefits of certified and accredited products.” Designed as a one-piece cartridge to allow easy maintenance and servicing, Altecnic’s 533H PRVs also have in-built filters to trap harmful debris. Using proven diaphragm construction, the valves also successfully maintain constant outlet pressures under flow and no flow conditions.
BENEFITS Another new innovation from the UK’s leading supplier and manufacturer of quality plumbing equipment is the pre-payment compatible HIU that is helping to cut and simplify the installation of pre-pay HIU systems. Designed to save time and money, Altecnic has upgraded the HIU firmware and
added a connection on the HIU’s integral controller to allow for direct wiring, or via an optional module, to third party prepayment systems. In operation, isolation of the primary system is now achieved by the already existing HIU integral electronic control valves. This means that the motorised valves, normally installed externally to the HIU, are no longer required. Designed with installers in mind, the integration is offering multiple benefits. Installation costs are reduced by upwards of £95 as the external motorised valve does not have to be specified and installed. It is also easier to fit, with fewer joints and potential leak paths. Building on its market-leading compact and stylish design, the HIU takes up less space within an apartment and can be installed in a smaller area; the wiring has also been simplified and it is now possible for all cabling to be out of sight. As well as being easy to install and commission, Altecnic’s HIU pre-payment system also offers significant benefits to landlords. Designed to provide increased tamperproof protection, the pre-payment valves are installed within the HIU behind a lockable and insulated cover, therefore giving tenants no opportunity to access the system, which could affect the accuracy of their credit reading.

Right every time! James Bell, Brand Director at SharkBite, discusses how an expanding range in brass and chrome push-fit fittings is ensuring installers have the right fitting to hand every time...
W
hile some plumbing and heating installers continue to use the traditional methods of soldering or compressing pipes and fittings, increasing health and safety legislation and insurance requirements are influencing a shift in the market towards flame-free push-fit solutions, with many added benefits for installers and their customers. Many installers will have experience with plastic push-fit fittings but regulations prevent their use in certain applications, particularly in close proximity to a boiler. In comparison, SharkBite’s slimline metal push-fit solutions provide installers with unrivalled flexibility and durability for almost any type of installation; fitting easily within cavities, products can be rotated for use in confined spaces. Being slimmer they are also easier to insulate. SharkBite plumbing solutions are the only fittings range on the market compatible with five different types of pipe, helping installers work smarter and more efficiently than ever before. In addition, as no heat is required to create joints there is no need for a hot works permit, providing a major advantage from a health and safety and insurance perspective.
that metal push-fit fittings and valves with SharkBite technology are twice as fast to install as press fittings; three times faster than Compression fittings and four times quicker than End Feed. Translated into real-time savings, one installer reported a saving of three hours’ labour on a combi boiler installation, releasing them to get to their next job. With around 1.2 million boiler installations completed every year, the potential timesaving across the industry is huge.
Trusted and secure Millions of SharkBite’s brass pushfit fittings and valves have been used by plumbers in all kinds of domestic and commercial systems, precisely because they are secure and watertight, providing confidence for the customer in the completed job. They are all fully demountable and can instantly be re-used, further reducing time, cost and waste in the event of an error or requirement to make changes to the system. Importantly, these fittings also enable quick, permanent repairs, even in wet conditions so there’s no time wasted in draining down a whole system.
Quick-fit fittings Being able to use just one range of fittings and connections for any domestic or commercial hot and cold water application has multiple advantages. Time-saving is the biggest benefit, with research showing

The benefits of innovation The development of these metal pushfit fittings and valves is about providing installers with a robust product choice, designed to save a considerable amount of
installation time. It’s this that inspires the product development team at SharkBite to keep innovating and extending the range. A style preference for chrome fittings to be used where surface mounted pipework is required is reflected in SharkBite’s new Chrome plated range. But it’s not just about looks; slimline, WRAS approved and with ultra-low lead DZR as standard, the fittings are safer and easier to insulate than alternatives. All SharkBite chrome plated fittings have been electroplated prior to the o-ring being inserted, which means the body is totally free from any harmful residual chemicals and resistant to the kind of component degradation that occurs when plating is applied later in the finishing process. This is the attention to detail in design and manufacture that’s giving a growing number of plumbers – worldwide – the confidence to pack their vans with just a single range of fittings and valves, with the versatility to have every requirement from 10mm – 54mm covered. Latest product in successful range of electronic water booster systems from DAB Pumps…
New e.sybox MINI launched
T
he final step in the development of the e.syline range, DAB Pumps has now introduced the new e.sybox ‘MINI’ electronic water booster system designed to guarantee the right pressure to meet water demands in the home. DAB now presents added value solutions for installers and families alike. For installers, the new design means simple and quick installation - just one third of the time normally needed for domestic installations - while families are guaranteed significant savings, a large reduction in operation noise and the certainty of just the right pressure in the right place throughout the home. E.sybox mini is now even more practical with ultra-compact dimensions. Above all in the houses of today, space is precious and there is the tendency to reduce the technical area to a minimum, which furthermore is not always concealed from sight as it used to be. The e.sybox mini thus stands out as a discreet and stylish furnishing element, proving to be highly popular with clients, as proved with e.sybox receiving the important award IF 2013 for design. As with the other models, e.sybox mini can also be installed horizontally or vertically as required. An all-in-one, out-of-the-box solution, E.sybox mini does not require any additional components for installation. It is made up of a multi-stage, self-priming pump, electronic control inverter, pressure and flow sensors, adjustable

high resolution LCD display and in-built expansion vessel. The water-cooled motor, protective casing, vibration damper feet and electronics that modulate the motor RPM on the basis of the set pressure (set point) and requested flow rate, make e.sybox mini extremely quiet compared to traditional pump models and vibration-free. For water in the bathroom, washing machine, kitchen sink, irrigation system, and any other device using water in the home, e.sybox mini guarantees constant delivery of water at the right pressure, making all annoying low water pressure problems a thing of the past. The launch of the ‘MINI’ is the latest development in the e.sybox water pressure boosting pump range that was launched by DAB Pumps last year. Using ergonomic design and cutting edge technology to bring a ‘plumb and play’ dimension to installation, this range saves time, money and costs. It can be fitted vertically or horizontally on its anti-vibration mountings or onto a wall-mounted bracket. The e.sybox enables plumbers to reach flow rates of well over 12 litres/min and up to 120 litres/min. Plumbers also appreciate the fact that the unit can be
installed with copper and plastic pipes, adding more flexibility to the install. The unit’s clever design also means it also has variable positions for inlet and outlet pipework and can be plugged directly into the mains electricity supply. The LCD high-resolution display is adjustable for easy reading and the user-friendly interface makes it possible to access performance information and customise the main settings. The e.sybox carries a three-year guarantee. Energy efficient, the pump’s variable speed motor operates from 0.3kW to 1.5kW, providing a powerful performance. E.sybox is self-priming down to eight metres and the variable speed motor means the pump increases and decreases flow as demand dictates, saving unnecessary energy use and the associated cost of a fixed speed pump. The e-HM series is built on the advanced hydraulics of Xylem’s reliable e-SV vertical multi-stage product line, which was introduced in September 2010. The e-HM series has a maximum flow rate of up to 127 gpm. A balanced impeller reduces axial thrust by 40% and a 20% thicker stainless steel pump body enhances durability and increases reliability. Reduced thrust and thicker pump bodies result in longer bearing and component life, which help to reduce the customer’s total cost of ownership by up to 30%.

Two separate trials prove that Tectite makes plumbers’ lives easier – and slashes installation times…
Tectite passes the test! R
igorous testing has shown that Pegler Yorkshire’s innovative Tectite push-fit system can cut installation times by up to 75% without sacrificing durability and versatility. In separate trials, world-renowned construction business Balfour Beatty and market-leading pipework company MEP Solutions compared the Tectite solution with two more traditional methods, namely threaded joint and press-fit. Using Tectite fittings, MEP’s installers were able to create a prefabricated module containing three separate services four times faster than when using the threaded joint method. Tectite’s flexible, easy-to-use system also proved twice as quick as press-fit. What’s more, Tectite passed MEP’s durability examination with flying colours. The module survived a 500-mile trip around the roads of the UK without picking up a single leak – despite minimal supports being attached in construction to ensure it would receive rough treatment. Balfour Beatty’s results were similarly impressive, with the Tectite push-fit system cutting the installation of a similar module from 1 hour 17 minutes using press-fit to 1 hour flat. “When we were asked to create a prefabricated module using only Pegler Yorkshire Tectite fittings, it was a relief to discover that these were readily available to use,” said Ray Barclay at MEP. “Also noticeable was the consistency of the fitting

sizes – this makes life easier for offsite manufacture. “The ability to simply pick up a part and push it in place reduces the need for any of the typical jointing methods, which not only increases the speed of production but also reduces injuries and eradicates crimping errors and the cost of buying and maintaining crimping tools.” As well as reducing installation times, Tectite brings many advantages over traditional methods. Its wide range of fittings is compatible with a variety of materials – including copper tube, PEX and PB pipe, carbon and stainless steel – and its valves can be rotated for ease of access. Some demountable Tectite fittings can even be swapped out once installed, thus futureproofing any installations and massively reducing the cost of repairs. And, because Tectite fittings are so easy and safe to use, only one installer is required, increasing productivity and freeing up staff to work on other jobs. Pegler Yorkshire has also recently added three new sizes to its Tectite sprint range which opens up this trusted solution to yet more applications. “Tectite Sprint combines the best of both worlds for contractors and installers,” said Tectite Product Manager, Janette Henwood. “Not only is it a robust, high-performance system with a long working life, but it is also
“Not only is it a robust, high-performance system with a long working life, but it is also quick and easy to install. quick and easy to install. “Thanks to the new sizes introduced by Pegler Yorkshire, more contractors than ever can benefit.” Designed to be as slim and attractive as possible, the copper and brass jointing system represents metal push-fit in its purest form. Consisting of only a handful of components, Tectite Sprint requires no hot work, flux or specialist tooling – making it clean, simple and up to two-and-a-half times faster to install than traditional joints as proven in the recent trials by MEP and Balfour Beatty. The ultra-versatile rotatable joints make the system ideal for use in tight spaces and awkward corners, as do the compact design and low profile. Sanbra Fyffes instantor plumbing fittings range has been awarded renewal of its NSAI certification …
Top marks for Sanbra Fyffe Ltd
S
anbra Fyffe Ltd, market leaders in the supply of plumbing and heating products in Ireland, is celebrating the renewal of its licence to use NSAI’s Irish Standard Mark in the manufacture of its Instantor range of brass compression fittings. Awarded by the NSAI, this certification highlights the company’s commitment to the manufacture and supply of superior plumbing fittings, and states that Instantor conforms to I.S. EN 1254-2. In September 2015, the Instantor range of brass compression fittings underwent a rigorous and thorough certification audit with the NSAI to International Standard EN 1254-2. This resulted in the renewal of Sanbra Fyffe’s original licence number 1.8.1 in connection with the manufacture of Instantor fittings. Sanbra Fyffe is the only Irish supplier and the only Irish manufacturer to achieve the NSAI standard on compression fittings up to and including 2”/54mm. The I.S. EN 1254-2 certificate was formally presented to Noel Conroy, Commercial Manager of Sanbra Fyffe by Sean Balfe, NSAI Director of Sustainability and Built Environment at the NSAI headquarters on October 12, 2015. Commenting on the success, Noel Conroy, said, “This is a great achievement for the company. Since the introduction of new building regulations, a heightened

awareness of standards and the importance of using quality products in construction, this certification serves to assure our customers of Instantor’s quality, durability and total reliability. “Sanbra Fyffe is the only Irish company to be awarded this certificate by the NSAI for fittings up to and including 2”/54mm. The industry has seen so many Irish importers in recent years offering fittings with a stamping reading EN 1254-2 on their products. With NSAI certification up to 2”/54mm, Sanbra Fyffe can differentiate completely from certain other competitors’ misleading claims. “The NSAI certificate gives builder providers, plumbing and heating stores and the plumbing trade as a whole the confidence and reassurance that Sanbra Fyffe Instantor products conform to the EN Standard. At the same time, it endorses Sanbra Fyffe’s reputation as the market- leading supplier of quality plumbing and heating products in Ireland.” Noel paid tribute to his colleagues involved
in achieving the standard and thanked Sean Balfe and Martin English for their cooperation with Sanbra Fyffe engineering and quality control staff during the certification testing process. Part of the Northstone group, Sanbra Fyffe Ltd is committed to the supply of superior plumbing products, hence the company motto ‘Quality without compromise’. The extensive range of plumbing and heating products provided by the company include other brands of note, such as Tucson Pumps, Eirline Taps, Rangemaster and Leisure sinks. M&E CONTRACTOR Galgorm resort & Spa, Ballymena
Completion of new multi-million pound extension and Ireland’s first outdoor thermal spa village didn’t faze this expert m&e team…
JBE ensures no stress at Galgorm Resort and Spa
G
uests at Galgorm Resort and Spa were able to relax in a stress-free environment due to the expertise of the team from JBE Mechanical Electrical on this latest multi-million pound expansion. Working on what is the first outdoor thermal spa village in Ireland, JBE Mechanical Electrical not only faced a tight schedule but also had the additional challenge of ensuring the company’s work didn’t affect the guests.
Overall, the project involved the construction of a four-storey extension to the hotel, along with a new indoor swimming pool, associated spa facilities and outdoor thermal spa village. This major project was completed while the hotel remained fully operational, with minimal disturbance to the guests and staff. The extension has created an additional 48 bedrooms which included family rooms,
corner suites and also the breathtaking Signature Suite that boasts 1,300sqft of pure luxury and a furnished terrace complete with private hot tub. Also included is a 20m indoor leisure pool surrounded by a polished pebble floor; the Relax Orangery; a Snow Cabin complete with powder snow and ice crystals, which is maintained at a chilly -7 to -15°C; a Sanarium; and the Elements Spa Café. Meanwhile, the new outdoor thermal

spa village incorporates a wood-fired ecofriendly riverside tubs; yoga studio on raised stilts; sauna; steam room; relax area; cabins and showers. This work was in addition to areas such as changing rooms, reception, kitchen, plant and store rooms, as well as three main corridors and a lift. JBE has also recently completed the new laundry building and electrical switch room. As Kevin Cottrell, Mechanical Contracts Manager at JBE Mechanical Electrical Limited, explained the experience of the company was reflected on this project. “For most people, going to the Galgorm is a relaxing experience but for us it was all about focusing on the job at hand,” he said. “The project involved high specification M&E requirements throughout which presentated a potential delay to the completion. However, we managed this in a professional manner. Clear communication, procurement
and leadership allowed us to achieve such high standards on this prestigious project.” One of the main challenges was the overall logistics involved in keeping the hotel fully operational. The major issue regarding this was the installation of two new high-efficiency boilers – a feat that had to be achieved without disruption to the hotel’s existing heating. “The extension meant that the plant room was effectively split in two so that made the installation of the new boilers more challenging, particularly given the fact that we had to switch over to the new system without causing any undue problems to guests.” JBE utilised as many off-site pre-fabrication techniques as possible and introduced a series of night shifts to make the installation as efficient as possible. Once these new boilers were in place, changeover of the two
systems went successfully within the rigid time constraints. “It was a case of keeping any shut downs to a minimum and ensuring they affected small sections of the hotel for a short duration. We had to liaise closely with the hotel’s management, and it worked well.” John Blair, Managing Director of JBE Mechanical Electrical, stated, “The level of expertise was clearly demonstrated to ensure that this project was completed on time, defect free and within budget through extremely high levels of organisation, communication and engineering skills that were delivered by both our staff in-house and site personnel.” JBE Electrical Mechanical will continue work at Galgorm Resort and Spa, with the company also signing a three-year maintenance contract for both new and existing services on site.

GAS SERVICES Galgorm resort & Spa, Ballymena
Experience of Newry-based company comes to the fore to ensure a smooth transition of gas services at luxury hotel…
EB Gas delivers high quality service
T
he addition of a new extension at the luxurious Galgorm Resort & Spa meant that EB Gas Services had to find the right balance between keeping the existing hotel and spa running without disruption and ensuring work remained on target in the new section. “The initial challenge was the total shutdown of the existing complex to facilitate the rerouting of services to allow for new build extension,” explained Kevin Byrne, EB Gas Services. “We had to do this without disrupting guests, so we carried out an overnight purge and relight of all existing plant and kitchens.” With all the current services rerouted, the next focus was on delivering supply for the new extension, which then had to be incorporated into the existing system. Kevin added, “Whilst building work was in progress we overcame the difficulties of maintaining the supply between old and new, as most of the pipework installation was either welded or fused.
“The addition of a new CHP and laundry facility meant further tap-ins to pipework and the supply of sub meters, controls and leak detection. “Overall, the biggest challenge was the logistics of the project and ensuring that we caused as little disruption to guests as possible. The success of this was very much down to our superb relationship with the M&E contractor, JBE, and I feel this partnership approach worked superbly well. “We are delighted with the finished project and to have worked on such a prestigious job as the Galgorm Resort & Spa.” The completion of this luxurious hotel and spa project continues the success of a company that was established in 1966 as a domestic gas centre that sold bottle gas and domestic gas appliances. From this base, EB Gas has developed into one of the largest gas service and installation companies in Ireland. The company is registered with both Gas
Safe and RGII, enabling EB Gas Services’ installation engineers to work throughout the UK and Ireland. All engineers have a wide variety of qualifications allowing them to carry out complete installations, including pipework and equipment commissioning. Kevin added, “We have a highly experienced team that can look after every aspect of your project. Our engineers are fully qualified, while we also have a knowledgeable sales team who can offer advice on all aspects of gas installation. We also offer a design service for both catering and heating applications, and our sales team is supported by a technical service team which is highly regarded throughout the industry.” The company’s original LPG distribution and appliance centre is still in operation. EB Gas also carries a wide range of spare parts for domestic, catering and commercial projects for both the end user and trade. These spare parts include regulators, valves, leak detection systems and interlock systems for commercial catering applications.

RINNAI OFFERS INSTALLER SUPPORT WITH HELP ON SYSTEM LABELLING FOR COMPLIANCE WITH ENERGY LABELLING DIRECTIVE…
Rinnai welcomes transparency of Energy Labelling Directive
R
innai, designer and manufacturer of the Infinity range of continuous flow gas-fired water heaters, has welcomed the implementation of the Energy Labelling Directive on September 26, as it scores ‘A’ ratings on all its water heaters. “Energy labelling of product offers transparency to specifiers and end users who will now have a clear guide for choosing the most efficient units available,” said Chris Goggin, Associate Director of Rinnai UK. “Rinnai brings to market the most extensive range of ‘A’ rated appliances with load profiles ranging from small domestic models to XXL sized industrial units,” he continued. “The ‘A’ rating applies to when a unit is in use – ie when fuel is being used – and, as an ‘A’ rated Rinnai unit only uses fuel when water is being drawn, the energy label cements our reputation for efficiency, as continuous flow water heaters suffer no
standing losses with storage counterparts.” When Rinnai water heaters are paired with solar thermal and the latest intelligent controls are used for ultimate heat recovery, even higher efficiencies can be achieved. Rinnai is also set up to offer installers expert help with system labelling; for example, installers will be responsible for creating the labels for those installations that combine a water heater with renewables. The Energy Related Products (ERP)
Directive, incorporating Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives for water heaters (Lot 2) means that water-heating products sold in the UK need to meet minimum energy performance criteria in order to be legally placed on the market, and require an energy label. DR NEIL WATSON, ADEY’S TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, DISCUSSES HOW THE MANUFACTURER DELIVERS A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CHEMICAL WATER TREATMENT, WITH THE INSTALLER AT ITS HEART…
Innovation drives product development
W
ith the arrival of MagnaClean in 2003, ADEY Professional Heating Solutions revolutionised the sector and is now Europe’s No.1 manufacturer of magnetic filters. Although ADEY is relatively new to the chemicals market, thanks to considerable investment in our research and development laboratory in Kent, we have been able to create our own chemical formulations which are rigorously tested to ensure they not only meet, but surpass BuildCert CIAS standards. The benefit of having our own laboratory at our research centre means we have full control over what goes into the chemicals. Perhaps even more crucially, it allows us a greater understanding of how chemical formulations work together and ensures that we can be specific about using the right balance of ingredients to get the best performance; a process we refer to as ‘smart chemistry’. For example, this approach enabled us to create a range of cleaners and inhibitors that complement each other to achieve the best results. Using ‘smart chemistry’ we’ve been able to ‘design in’ key product developments to our MC+ range to ensure that it stands out against our competitors. Our MC3+

Cleaner protects vulnerable metals (such as aluminium) in the heating system, during the cleaning process. This means that it can be dosed up to a month in advance of flushing, significantly reducing the time on site to complete the MagnaCleanse flushing process. The time-saving benefit of being able to leave a chemical cleaner in a system is hugely important, as it gives installers a clear advantage. Once the installer has been out to see a property and identified that the heating system needs cleaning, using RAPIDE MC3+ Cleaner they are able to dose the system there and then, in just 20 seconds without the need to drain down or reduce system pressure. This starts the cleaning process immediately, rather than having to circulate the cleaner for an hour or so with the heating on when the engineer comes back to flush.
BENEFITS FOR ALL As well as clear benefits to installers, ADEY’s range of chemicals has advantages for boiler manufacturers as well. We have developed our MC1+ Protector to treat 125 litres of system water, or up to 15 radiators, because research has shown that more than 25% of typical heating systems are in excess of
100 litre capacity. A single dose of MC1+ Protector, however, treats 97% of all typical heating systems in the UK. Any boiler manufacturer can be happy that if an installer is using ADEY’s chemicals, and adding one bottle per system (as is often the ‘rule of thumb’ regardless of system size), it is far more likely to be correctly dosed than if a product formulated for only 100 litre systems has been used. This keeps the warranty intact and reduces the risk of problems or breakdown in the future. The complete control ADEY has over its own chemical formulation development means we’ve been able to adapt our MC1+ Protector to include elements that compensate for a certain amount of cleaner residue left in the system. This is something which we believe is unique in the industry. Furthermore, given that we also manufacture our own products, we test every single batch we make to the BuildCert CIAS Performance Standard before it is released to market. This means that our customers can be assured of product performance consistency. T: Noble Distribution Ireland (NI) 07980 983708 or (RoI) 0044 7980 983708 E: info@adey.com W: www.adey.com

MEETING REQUIREMENTS FOR DOCUMENT M OF THE BUILDING REGULATIONS 2010 IS A MORAL OBLIGATION, SAYS SHARON MCKENNA, SALES & MARKETING DIRECTOR OF BARWOOD PRODUCTS...
The importance of DOC M packs
C
ontractors and installers should not be tempted to source lower cost products that might compromise the integrity of the Doc M Pack and run the risk of failing to meet the approved document requirements. The whole point of the practical guidance is about providing public toilet facilities for disabled users that make it as easy for them to go to the loo as it is for non-disabled people. The Approved Document exists to protect less mobile people. It can simply be the wrong height/projection of a toilet pan that makes safe transfer from wheelchair to the toilet difficult and potentially stressful. BS8300 provides more detailed guidance to supplement the Approved Document M and sets out the Code of Practice required for the design of buildings and their approaches
92 | PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE
to meet the needs of disabled people. To ensure compliance to this Code of Practice and Building Regulation, specifiers should consider the following: • Correct height of toilet pan for wheelchair transference. The top of the seat ring on the WC pan should sit 480mm from the floor. • Correct projection of toilet pan and seat ring for optimum wheelchair positioning. The projection should be 750mm from the back of the wall. • Cisterns should have a flushing mechanism positioned on the transfer side of the WC. • Hinged drop-down support arm should be located on the open side and should extend 50mm to 100mm beyond the front of the WC.
• A basin that allows a mixer tap to be positioned closest to the user to eliminate the need to stretch (and potentially fall) to hand wash. • Backrest on low- level toilet suites. • CE marked sanitary ware with Declaration of Performance (DoP). Barwood Products is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of bathroom products for the less-abled and special needs market and has specialised in this sector for nearly 20 years. PLUMBERS GIVE THE SEAL OF APPROVAL TO INNOVATIVE PRODUCT RANGE FROM MACDEE WIRQUIN…
T
he innovatively designed Macdee Wirquin range of water saving products proved a popular draw for installers and merchants attending the twoday Plumbing and Heating Trade Event in Belfast. Over 100 visitors came onto the stand to find out more about the products’ unique features that help save water, money, space and installation time. “It was an excellent show, where the products were well received,” reported Jim Brennan, Wirquin Business Development Manager for Northern Ireland. “Plumbers particularly loved the awardwinning Macdee Motion universal dual flush siphon. It fits all lever-operated cisterns, so it’s the only one they need to stock in their van. The Macdee Slim shower waste was also popular as it will fit under even the flattest of trays avoiding, most of the time, the need to dig under the floorboards. “We enjoyed welcoming everyone onto the stand to chat about their plumbing problems and offer innovative solutions to help them to get the job done right first time,” said Jim.
WATER SAVING The large range of WRAS approved flushing mechanisms and delayed action inlet valves by Macdee Wirquin can help home owners and businesses to save water as well as money on their utility bills. The awardwinning Macdee Motion universal dual flush siphon is not only height adjustable, making it fit all lever operated cisterns, but it has a large selection of flush volume settings allowing the end-user to save water. Contrary to the traditional diaphragm, the robust, flapper type system will not wear, and thus enables the product to be guaranteed for ten-years. The Jollytronic no-touch flush valve with eco-stop flushing technology also enables the user to determine the duration of the flush by hovering their hand over the infra-red sensor for a flush as long as is required (even more flexibility over a full or half flush). The Jollyfill inlet valve range, which works with the Macdee Motion and the Jollytronic, provides water-saving delayed action and can save up to 0.4 litres per flush. It can be installed whilst in situ, adapted to various cistern heights, and has a unique clutch system to prevent breakage if overtightened.

Wirquin – saving time, money, space and water SPACE SAVING Macdee Wirquin understands that contemporary designs and extra storage space are important to many home-owners. In line with the current trend of the low profile shower, the Slim shower waste is only 58 mm deep with a silicone membrane guaranteeing higher flow rates than standard requirements. The universal All In One Bottle Trap fits under any sink or basin outlet and its compact design, including the 50mm water seal, is space saving, quick to install with no need for tooling, and complies with standard regulations. The Senzo membrane trap is also extra flat to save space under any sink or basin and can be easily installed in a horizontal or vertical position.
TIME SAVING With the latest bathroom trend for minimalistic design, the new Chrono WC wall hung frame is the innovative solution for the end user and installer alike. This self-supporting frame can be installed single-handedly with up to a 50% timesaving, thanks to its innovative automatic pan connection system, a pre-installed double-skinned cistern, simple height adjustability, and push plate system with automatic adjustment for mounting on a variety

When only the real Saniflo deal will do n Saniflo MD, Tim Pestell, (pictured) is keen to reiterate that only a product with the Saniflo branding is the real one. “We are really proud of our heritage in the macerator market in the UK,” he said. “Saniflo were the first to bring the product to the UK market and we’re by far the market leader. We accept that there are competitive products out there and we understand why they would want their product to be aligned with our brand, but we really need industry professionals in the merchant sector not to try and pass off a nonSaniflo product as one of ours.
