Design: georgmuehlmann
Georg Mühlmann wurde am 22. Februar 1961 in Innichen geboren, wo er von unberührten Wäldern umgeben, seine Kindheit und Jugend verbrachte. Es waren dies seine ersten Spielplätze und hier wurde auch sein Verlangen geboren, die Formgebung des Holzes selbst zu definieren. Die ursprüngliche Ausbildung zum Holzschnitzer hat sein ausgezeichnetes Vorstellungsvermögen gesteigert, weshalb seine Objekte – bis ins kleinste Detail durchdacht – lange vor der definitiven Zeichnung und der Fertigung des Prototyps abstrakt entstehen.
Georg Mühlmann befolgt das Credo, dass weniger mehr ist und auch wenn auf Materialverbindungen, Proportionen und Ästhetik sehr viel Wert gelegt wird, verliert er niemals die Funktionalität aus den Augen.
Heute steht der Name georgmuehlmann für Möbel-Design und DesignMöbel, die in einem, sich fließend in die Landschaft eingefügtem Gebäude in Jenesien, einem Bergdorf hoch über den Dächern von Bozen im Herzen Südtirols, entstehen.
Das Unternehmen georgmuehlmann wurde 1985 gegründet; die DesignWerkstatt georgmuehlmann besteht seit 2009.
Georg Mühlmann é nato il 22 febbraio 1961 a San Candido (BZ), dove ha passato l’infanzia e la gioventù circondato da boschi sterminati. Erano questi i primi luoghi di gioco e qui nacque la sfida di definire lui stesso la forma del legno. Ha quindi iniziato la sua attività lavorativa con ottimo successo come esperto intagliatore di legno, ma poi ha scoperto la falegnameria che lo ha ammaliato e – nel 1985 – incentivato ad aprire una bottega propria. Dal 2009 la falegnameria georgmuehlmann si trova a San Genesio, un paese sovrastante la città di Bolzano nel cuore dell’Alto Adige. L’edificio si inserisce armoniosamente nel paesaggio circostante ed è divenuto un laboratorio di design legando il nome georgmuehlmann strettamente al design di mobili e ai mobili di design.
Georg Mühlmann tiene conto che tanto più accuratamente vengono curati i dettagli, tanto meno si rischia di sovraccaricare un oggetto lasciando al cliente più spazio di gestire le proprie emozioni. Sebbene l’estetica abbia un ruolo importante, la funzionalità di ogni pezzo non viene mai trascurata.
La ditta georgmuehlmann venne fondata nel 1985, il laboratorio di design nel 2009.
Georg M端hlmann was born in San Candido on February 22, 1961, where he grew up surrounded by pristine forests. This endless stretch of green became his first playground and subsequently the place that inspired him to transform wood into something with new shapes and structures. He therefore started his training as a woodcarver but was soon captivated by the woodworking business, and so went on to open a workshop of his own. The georgmuehlmann woodworking lab is located in the small mountain village of San Genesio overlooking the city of Bolzano, right in the heart of South Tyrol in northern Italy. The construction harmoniously fits in with its surrounding landscape. Today, the name georgmuehlmann is closely linked to the concepts of designing furniture as well as designer furniture, and brings with it the notion that less is more.
The more meticulously the details are taken care of, the least likely is an object going to look overburdened, granting customers the right amount of space to manage their feelings. The emphasis placed on the combination of materials, proportions and aesthetics to create sophisticated pieces never overrides functionality.
The company georgmuehlmann was founded in 1985 and the woodworking design lab in 2009.

Alpha Alpha ist ein besonderer Blickfang als Ablage für Zeitschriften oder Musik-Notenbücher, die in diesem stabilen Aktenkoffer einen würdigen Platz finden. Außerdem können im Aluminiumrohr, welches das Taschengelenk bildet, einzelne Notenblätter knickfrei aufgerollt verwahrt werden. Anlässlich der nächsten Musikprobe kann Alpha dann einfach als Aktentasche verwendet werden und die Unterlagen sind stets griffbereit. Die Innentasche aus Leder ist mit einem Reißverschluss versehen.
In qualsiasi salotto Alpha attira l’attenzione: funge da portariviste e da porta spartiti, che trovano posto nella sua tasca interna in pelle. Se invece si vogliono custodire singoli fogli di musica si arrotolano e si inseriscono nel tubo in alluminio anodizzato situato alla base di Alpha, e in occasione delle prove di musica potrà essere usato come elegante e originale valigetta 24 ore con gli spartiti sempre a portata di mano. L’inserto in pelle può essere chiuso con una cerniera lampo.
Alpha is an eye-catching feature in any living room: both a magazine rack and a sheet music holder with an internal zip up pocket in leather in which to store away one’s music scores. Frédéric 1810 Schlicht jedoch anspruchsvoll. Ob es nun ein Tisch für acht, sechs oder gar zehn Freunde sein soll – jeder Wunsch kann erfüllt werden. Dabei sind es vor allem die rundgeformten Eckverkleidungen mit Öffnung für den Tischfuß, die dem Tisch eine ganz besondere Note verleihen. Diese Erinnerung an Musiknoten stand auch Pate für den Objektnamen: Frédéric Chopin, geboren 1810. Sein Minutenwalzer ist wohl eines der schönsten Klavierstücke, die man sich erträumen kann.

Amedeo 1884 is a set of furniture suitable for all those who appreciate objects and finishings of a refined, elegant, classic and therefore timeless nature. The comb joints respect the traditional crafting methods, while the understated design and the grain of the local chestnut wood arouse the emotions of whoever watches them: they are in fact reminiscent of the works of art of Amedeo Modigliani, who was born in 1884.

Melk-i Schlichtheit schafft Schönheit und Tradition Innovation. Deshalb hat georgmuehlmann die traditionsreichste alpenländische Sitzgelegenheit, den Melkschemel, neu interpretiert. In einem typischen Holz der Alpen, der Zirbe, deren ätherische Öle das Allgemeinbefinden positiv beeinflussen. Melk-i, dessen minimalistisches und originelles Design die Fachwelt überzeugen konnte, wurde u.a. mit dem renommiertesten internationalen Design-Preis, dem red dot award: product design, ausgezeichnet.

Lo sgabello originale Melk-i è realizzato in legno di pino cembro, tipico legno dell’arco alpino, regione di provenienza anche dello sgabello per la mungitura, al quale ci siamo ispirati creandolo. Stare seduti su Melk-i giova alla muscolatura e alla colonna vertebrale. Gli oli essenziali del cirmolo hanno un’effetto tranquillizzante sul sistema cardio-vascolare. Melk-i, per via del suo design pulito e il beneficio salutare è stato premiato con il red dot award: product design.
Simplicity creates beauty, tradition creates innovation. With Melk-i georgmuehlmann tried to keep in memory the oldest and most traditional seating of the alpine region, the milking stool. In addition, the essential oils off the Swiss pine, of whose wood Melk-i is made, slows down the pulse rate, stabilizes circulation, has a calming effect and generally increases well-being. The minimalist and original design of this ergonomic stool has persuaded the red dot jury, too. This prestigious design award was assigned 2013 to georgmuehlmann.

Melk-i Ein traditioneller Gebrauchsgegenstand wird zum Design-Objekt Konkret wuchs die Idee 2011 anlässlich einer Tagung an der Freien Universität Bozen (Italien) heran, bei der Stühle aus aller Welt vorgestellt wurden – ein typisch Südtiroler Stuhl aber fehlte. Nachdem der Melkschemel wohl zu einer der ältesten Sitzgelegenheiten dieses ursprünglichen Bauernvolkes zählt – wird er doch bereits in der Zeit der Minnesänger als Gebrauchsgegenstand erwähnt – lag es für Georg Mühlmann nahe, diesen in einem typischen Holz des Alpenraumes, der Zirbe, »salonfähig« zu machen und durch ein ansprechendes Design zeitgemäß neu in Szene zu setzen. Dass dabei in der Design-Werkstatt von georgmuehlmann nicht nur ein optisch mehr als ansprechender Schemel entstanden ist, sondern ein Gesundheitshocker rundum, dessen wohltuende Eigenschaften sich sowohl auf den Körper als auch auf den Geist auswirken, verdanken wir der Kreativität von Georg Mühlmann. So lockert das Sitzen auf Melk-i die Wirbelsäule, stärkt Lenden- und Beinmuskulatur und die Harze und ätherischen Öle des Zirbenholzes tragen zu einem verbesserten Raumklima bei, senken die Herzfrequenz, regulieren den Kreislauf und haben nachgewiesener Weise eine bakterizide Wirkung. Und der alte Melkschemel wird wohl vor dem Vergessen werden bewahrt.

Melk-i Lo sgabello per la mungitura viene trasformato in un oggetto di design Lʼidea di realizzare una sedia tipica dellʼarco alpino nacque nel 2011 dopo la partecipazione di Georg Mühlmann a una relazione tenutasi presso la Libera Università di Bolzano intitolata: »Le sedie del mondo«. Quale sedia, quale forma sarebbe in grado di rispecchiare la tradizione altoatesina con la sua gente così legata alla natura, rude, le cui radici sono saldamente radicate nellʼalpicoltura? Certamente solo una seduta molto antica, nominata già nel medioevo dal più famoso poeta in medio alto-tedesco, W. von der Vogelweide: lo sgabello per la mungitura. La sfida stava nel fatto di trasformare la seduta lignea formata da un piatto e una sola gamba in una sedia da scrivania dal design pulito e intramontabile mantenendo nel contempo il carattere dellʼoggetto iniziale. E solo un legno poteva essere idoneo per la realizzazione di questo sgabello: il pino cembro, legno tipico dellʼarco alpino i cui oli essenziali sono molto preziosi avendo un effetto tranquillizzante sul sistema cardio-vascolare. Oltre a ciò stare seduti su Melk-i giova alla muscolatura che viene rassodata e alla colonna vertebrale che viene resa più elastica. Melk-i A milking stool is transformed into a design object The idea to produce a traditional chair preserving the memory of the Alpine region came to Georg Mühlmann following a conference held at the Free University of Bolzano (Italy) in 2011, named »Chairs of the World«. The aim was to effectively represent the tradition of South Tyrol, as well as its people, so undeniably tied to the harsh nature and historic alpine farming culture of the region. Only one type of chair proved ancient enough to fulfil this aim: the milking stool, cited as way back as the Middle Ages by the most famous Middle High German lyric poet, Walther von der Vogelweide. The greatest challenge lay in transforming a flat piece of wood with a unique central leg into an ergonomic desk chair with a clean-cut and timeless design, respecting its primordial essence. Melk-i was therefore crafted using Swiss pine, a wood typical of the Alpine region where the milking stool originates. Its resins and essential oils have a calming effect on the cardiovascular system and contribute to a general sense of well-being. Melk-i also relaxes the spine while strengthening the muscles of the back, legs and stomach. The mix of traditional and modern lifestyle elements most definitely prevents this design item from becoming obsolete and makes it appealing to a wide range of people.
