GLOBAL WELLNESS DAY Karisma: Socially Responsible Company New projects from the hand of Margaritaville®

EDITORIAL INDEX Reflecting these days on the events we all went through in the year 2020, I definitely consider that we’ve taken a giant step forward, leaving behind any bad memories, as I see the enthusiasm among the staff working at every business unit the various countries, completely united, working hand in hand with one another, and, mostly, as always, giving their heart and spirit of service that distinguishes us, in order to rise up.

We’ve developed a powerful resilience and to rebuild on the foundations we’d already established so well. Thus, I’ve no doubt that we’ve recovered the path to success, and we shall continue to move along that path to prosperity not just as a company, but in our homes and communities, as well. We’ve made great progress in our technological systems and expertise, in order to link good practices and acquired expertise as a knowledge base practices, which, no doubt will aid us in facing new challenges in the future. Our cultural heritage of development and adaptation to change, which has allowed us to remain organized, to continue building new paths to success. It is almost impossible to think that without all of you wouldn’t have been able to reestablished so quickly in the market, even long before our closest competitors. So, on behalf of the whole organization and my own, I wish to thank you for your solidarity, sharing these words by Dr. Patricia Cabrerizo, faculty teacher from Innova Teaching School:

The Evolution of the

GOURMET INCLUSIVE VACATION PROGRAM The GIVC program was officially launched in early 2008. In that very same year we began creating our “GI University Training” for travel professionals and started building our very first Online Portal for Travel Agents. We had such a great response to the program launch that we decided a celebration was in order! Hosted at El Dorado Royale, over 350 people were in attendance including travel agents, tour operators, press and staff members. Today our GIVC event is one of the most coveted in the industry and each year we’ve had to raise the bar to make it even better and more memorable. The production from our agent partners was over 30,000 in the first year and has since grown to an average of 115,000 room nights each year.   It was the first program of it’s kind and today, remains as the only one with a fee for agents to join. Soon after it’s launch, the program earned top industry accolades including Travel Weekly’s Gold Magellan Award for best loyalty program. Major hoteliers have implemented similar programs in order to remain competitive. Our program has since evolved to include niche market specializations such as weddings and romance, new digital tools

By Irene Barbosa

including our 4th version of the Travel Agent Portal as well as Diamond levels with additional benefits for our top producers. In order to help support our expansion, we also launched unique versions of the GIVC program for the Mexican and UK markets.   The GIVC program has continued to expand it’s offerings by providing exclusive cash earning programs such as ExPres and Cash In Your Points and by paying the highest comission in the industry to this day. All of these initiatives with the intention to give travel agents more reasons to book our hotels.   Even after 14 years we are going strong and it all comes down to the experience the GIVC and their guests have at our hotels. By working together with the operations team we were able to continuously evolve, creating unique exclusive added values and experiences for the agents to promote. If it weren’t for our passionate team at each and every hotel, we could have not come this far. Starting from the welcome amenities to the procedures we’ve had in place for all these years which are carried out so seamlessly to ensure that they are made to feel welcome and very special at Karisma Hotels.

®

With over 750 GIVC members today, this innovative travel agent loyalty program is proof that team work pays off!

PASSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY

THE WATER CYCLE

1. Water capture

2. Extraction

Water is a basic resource for life. All processes we carry out in our homes, work centers, and those carried out by the people who produce and generate the services and products we consume, need water. Unfortunately, water is a finite resource, that is, it can run out, and we are currently seeing some regions suffer already due to a shortage of life-sustaining water. Our hotels are no exception; we need water for our guests too use, to prepare food, to fill our pools, for the spa, for the Kids’ club, and for the restrooms we use. In fact, every process we go through on a daily basis at our hotels and offices depends, both directly and indirectly, on a regular supply of tap water. When it fails, we face serious problems and our ability to continue to provide excellent services suffers. But, how does water come to our work centers? In some of the business units operated by Karisma Hotels & Resorts opera, water comes through the municipal services and leaves through the drainage system back to the municipal services. Such is the case at the offices, the Nickelodeon Hotel Punta Cana, Azul Beach Resort Negril and Allure Chocolat hotels.

3. Purification

4. Distribution

At other business units, water availability from the municipal services is not available, so it must be extracted from the phreatic mantles and made fit for human consumption by the hotel. Obviously, doing this also makes the hotel responsible for treating used water before its final disposition in order to avoid contamination of the soil. Such is the case of all hotels in the Mayan Riviera Maya, Mexico, which have extraction wells and waste water treatment plants. In order to understand what the water cycle looks like a little bit better, let’s consider the following figure. 1. Water capture: When it rains, water flows too rivers, lakes, lagoons, and the sea, and it also permeates underground rivers. 2. Extraction: Water is extracted from its natural media by means of pumping systems, in order to start its usage cycle. In the case of the Karisma hotels in Mexico, extraction wells produce deep mantle saline water. Every hotel has the number of wells needed to cover its demand, and order to have them, they must have all legal permits by the National Water Commission (CONAGUA).

Environmental calendar AUGUST-DECEMBER

5. Use

3. Purification: Saline water extracted from the underground cannot be used without being treated, so it must be channeled to an Inverse Osmosis Plant, where it is purifies as it passes through filters and membranes, eliminating excess salts. 4. Distribution: every hotel has a complex hydraulic network that guarantees that water will reach all areas. Part of that water goes through heating cycles so that rooms, the laundry, and the kitchens will have hot water available. 5. Use: Guests bathe, swim in the pools, brush their teeth; chefs wash food, cook; stewards wash dishes and leave kitchens squeaky clean; public areas wash hallways; and Housekeeper mops rooms and wash restrooms… In a nutshell, we all use water throughout the day at the hotel. 6. Drainage: When we finish using it, water leaves through the drainage to pumping sumps, and from there it is taken to the Waste water treatment plant or, as it’s called among friends, the PTAR (initials in Spanish). 7. Treatment Plant: At treatment plants, through chemicals and/or biological substances, water is treated to remove from it all contaminants, chemicals, pathogens that can cause diseases, and

organic matter. Out of this process, two main products result: Muds (all solids carried by waste water, which were already treated at the plant) and grey (solids-free, treated water). The whole process must also have been approved by CONAGUA. 8. Injection well: Part of those grey waters, that is, water already treated, is returned to the system where it originated (aquifer) and is injected into deep wells. 9. Irrigation: The other portion of grey waters go through an additional treatment process, from where it is channeled to be used for irrigation purposes. This portion of the water is considered recycled and it is very important for the maintenance of the gardens in our beautiful, exuberant hotels. 10. Muds: Solids, once dry, can be integrated into compost along with earth and vegetable matter (pruned bushes or vegetable kitchen remains) and that mud can, after a few weeks, be reused as soil for the gardens. If it isn’t taken to compost, it must be removed by an authorized company for processing. Aside from guaranteeing a supply of water, if carried out correctly and without fault, this process keeps us from being fined or

8. Injection well

penalized, and even most important, we avoid contaminating our ecosystems. How can we uphold a healthy water cycle in our hotels? 1. Use only as much water as you need, avoid waste at all costs. 2. Observe all installations, if you detect a leak, report it immediately; don’t wait until gallons and gallons of water have been wasted. 3. If you work in the kitchen, DO NOT POUR OIL OR FAT DOWN THE DRAIN! They turn into solid lard that clog pipes, cause water to backflow and, if it reaches the Treatment plant, it kills the bacteria in charge of treating the water and causes contamination. 4. If you work on the pools and apply retro washing operations, do only what is necessary, don’t let it run on. 5. If you are a chef, remember that defrosting under a water jet IS FORBIDDEN. 6. If you use any chemicals in your job, do not pour them down the drain; check the technical data file to see which is the best way to handle each substance.

9. Irrigation

10. Muds

Contributing to a healthy water cycle helps us ensure we will never want for this resource, it also guards us from negative legal issues and allows us to comply Sustainable Development Goal 6, intended to “Guarantee the availability of water and its sustainable management and healthy treatment for all”.

IT: TECNOLOGÍAS DE LA INFORMACIÓN

Technology in the “new normal”

ONLINE SHOPPING, IS IT SAFE? Definitely, as a consequence of all health measures and protocols resulting from the post-Covid19 era, the way we conduct our daily activities needs to be adjusted in order to fulfill said guidelines and ensure the safety of end users, preventing unnecessary exposure and possible spread of the virus. It is there, precisely that good and servicepurchasing platform technologies from the comfort of one’s computer at home over the Internet, and with the possibility of having products delivered at home efficiently comes into play. However, the question among customers and suppliers is: “Are these portals safe for both parties?” The main platforms that have experienced exponential growth in their operations since the first quarter of 2020 are: Amazon, Mercado Libre, Rappi, Uber, and Domino´s, apart from, and congruently with, the current trend that shows new and diverse options, such as: Cornershop, Didi, Linio, Walmart Pick-up and/or delivery, among others. But, ¿how to know if a platform is safe? Here are some recommendations to conduct operation reliably and satisfy your needs?

By Juan Carlos Carrillo – IT Corporate Director

1. The page must contain clear information: In order to make sure that an online store or supplier is reliable, it must show a direct telephone line or chat app to contact the supplier, which will enable you to physically locate it or a telephone number where you can call those offering a product in order to solve any doubts or question. 2. Information concerning all products must be clear: On the page you should find the weight, color, measures, and other specifications of the products you’re planning to purchase, apart from providing different means of payment; a reliable page must include not only the option of paying with a credit card, but also bank transfer, Pay Pal and, if possible, payments in cash. This last option is pretty reliable since it ensures payment against reception of the product. 3. Loof for a devolution policy: To identify an online store or supplier as reliable, it must provide information on a devolutions policy in case you don’t like the product, apart from allowing you to track your delivery, indicating time and date of arrival.

4. Check the store reputation: Always check people’ comments about other users’ experiences with the platform. This can give you very valuable information on what to avoid or what the best way to use the platform is.

Conclusion: Despite being available in the market for more than 10 years, platforms or online stores are viable options offering a chance to purchase goods and hire services from home and office. To avoid inconveniences and bad experiences we need only consider the recommendations listed above and enjoy the benefits of technology in the so-called “new normal”. Happy shopping!

The current situation with COVID-19 has led women to put aside their gynecological health, prioritizing other illnesses associated to possible complications in case of infection, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, etc. The public health systems around the world have prioritized the treatment of other illnesses and have contributed to increasing the gap in women’s health medical attention. Fundación Karisma, A.C., concerned for the health of our collaborators, designed a program to provide free, private medical attention to women with uterine myxomatosis, endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding, ovarian cysts, and mammary gland diseases. This program benefited 84 women who received medical attention from specialists and will continue to be followed up on in private, aiming at improving their quality of life.
