THE FIRST SUNRISES OF MARGARITAVILLE® ST. SOMEWHERE
Cocina de Mar By Karisma Knowing Our Teams… Karisma Foundation: Avoid Injuries
EDITORIAL In this issue, I would like touch on the subject of the “digital transformation” that our organization is undergoing, as we are we currently investing in it, motivated by the imminent expansion planned for the upcoming years. And why is that? – Simply, to be fully prepared for the multiple challenges associated to being adequately equipped with everything that the postCovid 19 era has brought upon us. Namely, a maelstrom of new technological options, which have forced companies into an accelerated modernization process and development of new initiatives to become more competitive in our industry. Nowadays, guests expect new services available within the hotels, that allow them to enjoy a relaxing vacation without wasting any time, and to take full advantage of the hotels´ amenities while remaining “connected” to their normal life. However, it is important that we all understand that “digital transformation” may in some cases imply reworking products, processes, and strategies within the organization by leveraging digital technology. As such, it requires examining and reinventing most, if not all areas within an organization, its supply chain and workflow, its people´s skills, and the interaction process at the executive board and customer levels, as well as the value provided to stakeholders. For the time being, I would like to share with you some of the existing projects in our portfolio, which benefit our collaborators and customers alike. On one hand, we are upgrading our online learning platform or “LMS” (AcademiK) to cutting-edge levels, and on the other hand, migrating our property management system or “PMS” to the number one platform worldwide called Opera by Oracle Hospitality, backed by Infotech, the world’s leading technology consulting organization in the hospitality industry, where it holds the place of honor. AcademiK will be consolidated as a responsive, agile, and intuitive platform that will contribute to the continuous training of our Human Capital, and Opera Oracle Hospitality will lay the foundations for processes to be carried out based on best practices and offer the best experiences to our customers, allowing us to exceed their expectations.
I would like to invite you to join me in this fascinating world of “digital transformation”, to take our collaborator and customer´s experience to a higher level of interaction and satisfaction. Both projects place us at the forefront of up-todate technology within the “big leagues” of the hotel industry. We will also be communicating other digital technology projects that will allow us to continue improving as an organization. Your friend, DANIEL LOZANO L. Operations Vice president – Hotel Division at Karisma Hotels & Resorts. 2

PASSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Red Mangrove
MANGROVES AND WETLANDS Mangrove forests develop naturally in coastal areas, mainly at the mouths of rivers, in lagoons, estuaries, on flat and marshy lands that are partially and periodically flooded by relatively calm waters, and on islands or islets where there is no difference between high and low tides. Mangroves are halophytes, which are plants that have become especially adapted to thrive in ecosystems with saline soil and inundated conditions. Some say that the word mangle (mangrove) derives from a Guarani language word that means “crooked tree,” surely referring to the shape of the Rhizophora mangle species, whose long roots (similar to mosquito legs) afford its particular features. However, from the point of view of the ecosystem, mangroves are much more than a crooked tree, since mangrove forests harbor a great diversity of animals and plant species. Therefore, whenever we talk about mangroves as a general term, a large number of species must be included. When their leaves fall, they serve as food for a huge diversity of organisms, mainly shrimp, crabs and fish. Mangrove species in general have morphological adaptations that allow them to live in unstable soils, and morpho-physiological adaptations to tolerate saline and brackish environments, and to be able to exchange gases in substratum with low concentrations of oxygen. The roots of the mangroves are partially submerged in the substratum, with an aerial part that protrudes, and which is in charge of capturing part of the oxygen that they need to survive. In addition, mangroves have structures in their leaves called hydathodes, through which they can expel any excess salt. On the other hand, mangroves have reproductive strategies, such as featuring propagules that can float for long periods, and which germinate while still attached to the mother plant. Mangrove forests also serve as a great filter, since all the nutrients, sediments and substances that reach them from the mainland are absorbed, assimilated and metabolized by the thousands of microorganisms that coexist with the mangrove in such a way that these substances do not reach the sea. That is why mangroves are known as “the kidneys of the world”. This function of the mangrove is what generates the characteristic smell of methane in these areas. Wetlands, on the other hand, are floodable ecosystems that have aquatic or land species that tolerate large amounts of water.
THE JUNGLE Jungles are some of the tropical ecosystems with the greatest diversity of plants and animals. The abundance of rains causes tropical forests to always be filled with water. Water is important, since it helps to make the jungle’s soil fertile. This is possible because there are leaves, fruits and even tree branches that continually fall to create a layer that covers the ground. Then, the bacteria spring into action, which, aided by the humidity of the environment, rot the plant-based layer in a short time, and allow its nutritious substances to return to the soil and serve as natural fertilizer for new plants. This layer of dead organic matter is called humus. There are few regions in the world where climate conditions allow the development of jungles. These regions are located between the tropics and the equator. The areas between the tropics receive more solar energy than in any other part of the world, since the sun’s rays fall almost directly on them. This causes the temperature in the intertropical region to be higher than in the rest of the world. Due to this, the water heats up, evaporates, and rises towards the sky, where it cools down, forming a wide band of clouds that generate abundant rains. The two essential features that are vital for the jungle to grow are high temperatures and constant rains. In the areas surrounding our hotels, both in Mexico and in the Caribbean, there are tropical forests intermingling with other ecosystems (grasslands in the Dominican Republic, mangroves in Mexico and wetlands in Jamaica). In the jungle, there are two main layers: The first one is made up of shrubs, mosses and ferns. The second layer is made up of trees, which grow in search of light, forming large canopies that are joined together at the same level to create a “green roof.” Their bark can have bright yellowish or grayish colors, and can have vines and epiphytes growing on their branches. The jungle is considered the most diverse terrestrial ecosystem on the planet, and there are currently only two areas of well-preserved jungles in Latin America. The first is the Amazon jungle, in South America, in the area that has not yet been fragmented to create farmland. The second area with the largest tropical forest is located in the Yucatan Peninsula, which is in permanent risk of fragmentation and destruction. Among the wildlife species found in the jungle are the puma, jaguar, white-tailed deer, coati, gray fox and wild boar. The most common birds are the chachalacas, hummingbirds and parrots.

PASSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Coastal Dune
Dominican Jungle Beach Spider Lily
Shoreline Purslane COASTAL DUNES Coastal areas are made up of very diverse environments, some authors consider that, as a whole, these stretches of vegetation host between 10 and 30 million species of wildlife and plants. Beaches and coastal dunes serve as flexible barriers that absorb the impact of crashing waves during storms by shifting and adjusting their shape and position. Dunes are essentially reservoirs where sand accumulates during “normal” conditions, and is then released onto the beach and marine area during storms and hurricanes. After these events, and once again under “normal” conditions, the beach recovers, and the growth process of the coastal dunes begins again. However, the natural processes of the beaches and dunes conflict with the stationary coastal infrastructure. In addition, these areas harbor a significant biodiversity; they serve as nesting, feeding and resting areas for wildlife, and are the habitat of a large number of species, many of which fall into some category of conservation.
Seagrape
Chit Palm
Some of the plants that exist on the coastal dune of our hotels are the seagrape (Coccoloba uvifera), shoreline purslane (Sesuvium portulacastrum), scarlet cordia (Cordia sebestena), chit, or Caribbean thatch palm (Thrinax radiata), beach morning glory (Ipomoea pes-caprae), beach spider lily (Hymenocallis littoralis), among others.
Cenote Sac Actun
CENOTES, OR NATURAL SINKHOLES Cenotes are natural wells, with direct access to the groundwater. Its name comes from the Maya language ts’onot or dzonot. The cenotes are a widespread feature in the Yucatan Peninsula: They were formed, and will continue to form, thanks to the percolation of rainwater into the subsoil. This limestone bedrock is like a sponge that absorbs water when it rains. As the water seeps into the ground, the rock dissolves, giving way to fully or partially flooded caverns. Cenotes are formed when one of these caverns collapses, mainly due to erosion, revealing the groundwater that is found underneath.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
SMART HOMES
a benefit available for everyone The idea of a smart home usually sounds like something quite inaccessible, out of reach and even complicated for most people; however, the truth is that with today’s technological advances and cheaper technologies, countless household appliances and services can be automated in your home without the need to invest burdensome sums of money. What’s next? If you have already acquired a smart home hub, what’s the next step? It would be wonderful if you could walk up to your hub and say, “Alexa, make coffee!” and you could magically have a cup of coffee in your hands. Unfortunately, it does not work that way. What we must first understand is that intelligent assistants are merely that, assistants, and that they can only work with what they have within their reach. Assistants can’t serve you coffee if they don’t have a pot, water, coffee, and instructions, right? There are things that intelligent assistants can do without the need for special tools, for example, setting an alarm or a reminder, making a grocery list, calling a contact, and looking up information for you; just ask them what you need, and its done! What devices do intelligent assistants need to do other things? For starters, you must consider what you already have at home, surely some of the television sets that you already have installed have an Internet connection, and this makes them potentially Smart. Many times, modern television sets of famous brand names already feature applications that allow you to connect them with your Smart Hub, and to be able to give it commands such as, “Siri, turn on the TV in the living room”, “Ok, Google, change the channel from Total Play to ESPN.” In addition, you can program routines so that your television turns on at 7:00 am on your favorite channel. This, so far, doesn’t represent any additional cost.
You will then have to think about the things that you want it to do, but that are additional to what you already have at home. To achieve this, however, you will have to become familiar with Smart technology, and my recommendation is to acquire the following 3 devices: ·
·
·
Smart lightbulbs: Lighting is important, and it gives us security. Nothing is better than lying on your bed saying, “Alexa, turn off the light” or having a street light that turns on every day at 8:00 p.m. They can cost around USD $18 each, so it’s important to look for those that don’t require a branded Hub. Infrared Remote Control: Perhaps it is a gadget that not many are familiar with, but it is your best ally in this lifestyle. It is simply a universal remote control that can be placed anywhere in a room to control stereo systems, television sets, air conditioners, and almost anything that works with a “normal” remote control. They can cost USD$20, and a single one can handle several pieces of equipment in the same room. Smart Plug: It is an intelligent electric outlet that allows the turning on or shutting down of electricity in anything that is connected to the electrical current, for example, a fan, the coffee maker and even an iron. Why an iron? Well, have you ever wondered if you remembered to unplug your iron? So, this is the answer, if you are not sure, you simply open the Hub from your phone, and even if you are away from home, you can turn off your iron. Its price is around USD$20.00.
In summary, having a Smart home can cost less than USD$120, and it is not an investment that has to be made all at once. Devices can be gradually acquired and attached to the local Wi-Fi network of your home. You can then invest a bit more complex devices or with specific functions, such as cameras, motion sensors, locks, curtain rods, etc., your imagination is the limit.

KNOWING OUR TEAMS…
This time, we are pleased to introduce you to some of our colleagues from the different staff dining rooms. AZCANIO RIVERA GLADYS DEL CARMEN EMPLOYEE DINING ROOM MANAGER What do you like most about your job? To be creative by generating a balanced and healthy menu that most people like. On one hand, cooking is a passion and doing it every day makes me feel particularly pleased because I consider that a nice dish is something that will always be remembered. On the other hand, being a host, like when we have friends or family coming over, gives me that same satisfaction when I see all my co-workers coming into the staff’s dining room. What dish do you prepare that the staff at the hotel know that they cannot miss? I’m from Veracruz and I always include typical dishes of my home town, and that makes me feel proud of my roots and I’m happy to share my hometown cuisine.

What tips would you give someone who wishes to work in Karisma? My advice would be that this is a company that acknowledges all the ones that make an effort at work, and the ones who come back after working for another company, we are able to see that not many other companies give us what Karisma gives Us. I’m happy to be part of this GREAT FAMILY!
MARCO A. LÓPEZ DÍAZ COOK What do you like most about your job? To be able to show every day, through my work in food preparation, the love and passion that I have for cooking. To make sure that each diner, after eating what I prepared, has been able to enjoy great flavors, just as if it had been made at home. And that, day after day, the hotel’s staff will come into the dining room happily knowing that they will have a pleasant experience, since what they are about to receive has been made with great care and dedication. What dish do you prepare that the staff at the hotel know that they cannot miss? Creams are my specialty. Bringing a hot and liquid dish to your mouth at the beginning of a meal always creates a pleasant experience for the diner. In addition to the fact that this dish is very versatile, because it can be made from any vegetable, and it is very easy to combine with any other type of food.

FUNDACIÓN KARISMA
DIABETES EDUCATION Globally, diabetes is a pathology that is constantly increasing. Today it is estimated that there are 415 million people living with diabetes in the world and in 20 years there could be a 25% increase as a result of the incidence of overweight and obesity in the world. Karisma Foundation, A.C. for 5 years it has promoted actions to address this problem that today represents a great cost for public health in Mexico. Through different work methodologies to raise awareness about the importance of caring for people living with diabetes, the foundation has identified that the medical care of this population group requires much more than a medical control service to avoid complications associated with diabetes. the illness. Resistance to changing habits, daily hustle and bustle, lack of knowledge about possible complications associated with the disease, as well as poor nutritional training; they have been an important factor for people living with diabetes not to reach their glycemia levels. Beginning in 2022, Karisma Foundation, A.C. same life condition, this will allow you to know and identify the reaction generated by your life habits, physical, nutritional and emotional in the result of your glycemia. This strategy seeks to impact the quality of life of our collaborators, achieving control of their glucose, which allows complications associated with the disease, hospital admissions, disabilities or work disability, even resulting in the optimization of public health resources in Mexico. The educator has turned out to be a fundamental piece for the objectives of the foundation, since the collaborator feels identified with the peer, achieving a significant education through life experience. Gael García Mejía is a young leader in diabetes, from a community who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 16. He was a member of the Mexican Diabetes Association in Cancun since its inception, giving him the opportunity to receive proper education about his disease...Gael received a comprehensive education for years based on nutritional training for the correct balance of his food, which allowed him to have a great quality of life, and thus also optimize his resources for the control of his disease. Gael has received training from the Mexican Diabetes Federation and has helped as a leader in educational camps for youth and children. For 6 years he has actively participated in the health days of Fundación Karisma, A.C. as a volunteer and is a faithful testimony of quality of life through the excellent management of his condition. Since its inception, diabetes is a very expensive disease, its cost is increasing due to the development of complications due to poor control, so the only way to avoid this expense for families and for the country’s public healthis is to assume diabetes education.

KARISMA FOUNDATION
What is POSTURAL HYGIENE, and how can it help me at work? Postural hygiene is a set of recommendations and attitudes for the correct position of the body that will help us avoid certain injuries. Back pain can be reduced, and even completely eliminated, if we are able to practice good postural hygiene on a daily basis. That is why the Karisma Foundation has carried out mechanical/postural evaluations for the detection of chronic injuries related to the musculoskeletal system, which can cause discomfort, disabilities or physical impediments for the development of work functions. As a result of the evaluation and the detection of problems among the staff members that was carried out in Mexico, and with the purpose of providing support to the regulatory framework in occupational safety—some theoreticalpractical training was provided to raise awareness among employees about the importance of proper spinal hygiene, the implementation of mechanical loading and posture techniques to avoid injuries during the carrying out of their work, strategies for musculoskeletal strengthening, and tactics to improve flexibility through stretching exercises to improve the quality of life of our staff members. The integral well-being of our staff is vital for Karisma Foundation, A.C., and to honor this commitment, a collaboration agreement has been established with a comprehensive rehabilitation clinic both in Cancun and in Playa del Carmen, where both employees and family members can have access at preferential costs. For more information, you can go to your corresponding Human Resources office. In Karisma Foundation, A.C. our PASSION is to help!
