Karolinska Institutet offers ten global programmes, taught in English and with an international focus. The programmes proactively incorporate an interactive teaching model that emphasises informal and close contact between students and teachers and facilitates the active participation of students.
Education and research at Karolinska Institutet is mainly conducted on two campuses: the northern Campus Solna and the southern Campus Flemingsberg. Karolinska Institutet also has an established cooperation with several regional health care organizations.

Since 1901, the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine. There are regular opportunities for students to hear and see Nobel laureates in action, by attending their lectures or seminars on campus.
For matters of the body and soul, the Student Health Centre, student gyms and other sport and leisure facilities are open to all students, and there are ecumenical prayer/contemplation rooms on both campuses.

Strong research environments at Karolinska Institutet
BIOMEDICUM Karolinska Institutet is investing heavily in new buildings to meet future needs of research and education. One example is the Biomedicum, an ultramodern laboratory building for experimental biomedical research that opened in 2018. Becoming one of Europe’s largest laboratories, it facilitates the sharing of experiences, ideas and technologies across scientific borders. The investments at Karolinska Institutet is part of the development of the Hagastaden district with a new university hospital, flats and offices.
SciLifeLab The Science for Life Laboratory (SciLife-Lab) on the Karolinska Institutet campus in Solna is a national resource centre for high-throughput bioscience with a focus on genomics, proteomics, bioimaging and bioinformatics. SciLifeLab was created jointly by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm University, Uppsala University and Karolinska Institutet. EPIDEMIOLOGY Sweden is in a unique position for the pursuit of epidemiological research thanks to our long tradition of personal identity numbers, access to national demographic and health registries and uniform provision of high quality healthcare. This enables research to be conducted on very large populations. The world-class resources for epidemiological research available at Karolinska Institutet include the Karolinska Institutet Biobank, longitudinal cohorts such as the Swedish Twin Registry and an expanding expertise in biostatistics. This puts Karolinska Institutet at the forefront of epidemiological research internationally.
BASIC AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH Research at Karolinska Institutet is conducted in 22 departments, most of which are situated within or adjacent to Stockholm’s teaching hospitals. he Bachelor’s programme in Biomedicine gives you extensive knowledge of the biology and pathology of the human body, with understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying major global diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, allergies, infections and dementia, as well as knowledge of their diagnosis and treatment. You will be trained in an active research environment and have contact with the front-line of biomedical and clinically oriented research through lectures, seminars, laboratory practices and projects. he programme will give you extensive contemporary knowledge of and a strong foundation for independent work within molecular medicine. Developing skills in scientific communication, biomedical research literacy, and bioethics are also important aspects of your studies. lobal health combines knowledge and expertise from various disciplines including public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, sociology, anthropology, and environmental and political sciences. The subject area provides a platform for research, education and information about the health challenges the world is facing, particularly population groups burdened by poverty. The programme at Karolinska Institutet follows this approach and focuses on how research can contribute to meet these challenges. As the requirement for knowledge on global health has increased in many working environments, this master’s programme will not only help graduates to open doors internationally, it will also provide them with the skills needed to work at local level. Molecular Techniques in Life Science
O
ur understanding of the human body on a molecular level has in recent years advanced dramatically, and has led to the development of a number of new therapies and diagnostic tools for the effective treatment of diseases. The mission of the Master’s programme in Molecular Techniques in Life Science is to prepare students for a professional research career in this area – to advance the fundamental understanding of the human body and its diseases on a molecular level, or use the knowledge to develop novel diagnostic tools and treatments.

The programme is a unique collaboration between Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University, in the environment of Science for Life Laboratory, Stockholm. Nutrition Science Pursuing sustainable future health for all
"I learned about nutrition from various perspectives - its relation to climate, physical activity, biomolecules, digital health, and many more."
T
hroughout history there has been many claims regarding the role of diet on our health. During more recent decades, there has been a tremendous development in the field and the nutritional knowledge has increased substantially. The Master’s Programme in Nutrition Science aims to increase the student’s skills in working independently in the field of nutrition on scientific grounds. Areas covered in the first semester of the programme include how different types of studies contribute to the knowledge which forms the basis for diet and physical activity recommendations, while also considering sustainability aspects. In-depth knowledge of molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying the impact of diet on the organism is also included. Assessment methodology for dietary intake, physical activity and fitness, focusing on understanding the validity, applicability and evaluation of the results is also dealt with. Methods for preventing disease and promoting healthy dietary habits and physical activity, e.g. by using internet and mobile phone technology, are also covered in the first part of the programme. Global perspectives and comparisons are included in all courses. The second semester consists of a degree project comprised of 30 credits. Here the student has the opportunity to choose a project to study in-depth, depending on his or her background and interest, in various fields of nutritional research. For example, the project can be molecular, physiological, clinical, epidemiological or public health-oriented.

Analytic tools for a global context

he Master’s programme in Public Health Sciences offers you the possibility to develop a scientific approach and a good theoretical understanding of Public Health Sciences as well as for the chosen specialization in Public Health Epidemiology or Health Promotion and Prevention.

Both tracks provide advanced studies in epidemiology, biostatistics as well as methods outcome evaluation of interventions. Common courses also include concepts and theories in Public Health Sciences, qualitative approaches and project management. The track in Public Health Epidemiology has a further focus on applied epidemiology in order to develop the skills to describe, analyse and reflect upon a variety of public health issues and to critically review epidemiological studies. For the track in Health Promotion and Prevention the emphasis lies on applying methods for health promotion and preventive actions in order to develop skills in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating health interventions at both individual and structural levels. Graduates are well prepared for several positions in the private and public sectors, particularly with authorities responsible for environmental and health issues, both in Sweden and abroad. T
he Master’s Programme in Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) within Karolinska Institutet, has evolved since 1976, when it was one of the first toxicology programmes to be offered in the world. The programme is unique in its cohesive focus on toxicology and health. Studying toxicology is a way of learning how to understand various mechanisms of toxicity and how to assess health risks associated with the use of chemicals in our daily life. Knowledge and training in toxicology will give you the opportunity to contribute to a future promoting safe and sustainable chemical, pesticide and drug use. The programme has an emphasis on toxicological testing and research, modes of action, and health risk/ safety assessment using problem-based learning and real-life cases. The programme utilises its close connection with high-quality research and risk assessment work, and collaborates with the private sector, national authorities, as well as with scientists at departments within and outside Karolinska Institutet.
