EDITORIAL / BY GIANCARLO TININI

The start of the CIK-FIA European Championship and the

forthcoming CIK meeting in Geneva – during which we will discuss with the International Federation some of the aspects of the promotion of our sport, inspired some of my thoughts. Our opinion is that a lot of interventions are needed to put drivers needs and cost cutting at the heart of regulations and promotion choices. For example, regarding costs we will ask a different and more transparent management of tenders regarding tyres and fuel, calling for lower costs for drivers and sponsors. We will also ask a cut in entering fees and in free practice ticket costs, but we believe that reducing the number of International races is a necessary measure to increase the number of drivers and teams that can afford to be present. This would also favour a relaunch of national championships (that are currently crushed under the weight of more than 20 International rounds such as WSK races, Trophies and CIK-FIA Championships) and a wider diffusion of OK engines. We will propose a rethinking of the KZ activity, as the present numbers do not justify a European Championship featuring 4 rounds. From a technical viewpoint, we will call for some changes to the current front fairing regulations, asking some more careful interventions by stewards to better evaluate racing episodes. Alongside the usual in-depth analysis of the racing activity and on our products, I am pleased to signal two events in which CRG will be protagonist: the Academy Grand Prix Kart Scholarship in China and the Rental Kart World Contest, that will take place in Italy in October. In the GPKS Championship, together with our partners, we will try to train the next generation of Chinese drivers, while the Rental Kart meeting will be an international event underlining our direct commitment to this important market segment. I wish you all a very pleasant reading.

This service for customer teams and linked brands, as Zanardi and DR, represents the opportunity to save time and money at the track, but especially to offer the drivers and their families and partners a top level service area and it is very appreciated. It is the most important agonistic event in international karting, together with the OK Junior, OK and KZ World Championships that will take place in September. The first international races of the year, especially the WSK programme, were useful for the CRG Racing team to be prepared in the best way, aiming to confirm last year’s great results, when the CRG colours dominated with the titles achieved from Hiltbrand in the OK and Federer in the KZ2. The CRG teams expectations Glenn Keyart (Team manager): «The 2017 European Championship will be very demanding, as there are more races than in the past, moreover some tracks are new and we will have to make an extra work with the drivers from the technical point of view. The environment inside the team is very positive, we worked hard in the first races of the year to be prepared and competitive and also our drivers made an excellent work. I think they are ready to achieve important results».

> Flavio Camponeschi, KZ2 <

Flavio Camponeschi (OK): «In the last year I dedicated myself exclusively to the KZ, but together with the technical staff and Giancarlo Tinini we decided to move to the OK, as there was a need of experience in this category, after that the new regulations reduced the drivers’ minimum age and many new young drivers from the OK Junior came in. My work during the weekends, besides aiming to the best possible result, will be also supporting the technicians with the set-up and the developments in view of the World Championship in September and the new homologations».

results. In the OK Junior, the CRG official drivers will be Henrion, Bortoleto, Gomez, Munding, Karmanshachi and the young Luca Giardelli, but also Sagrera and Haverkort will have great ambitions. In the OK, the most unexpected news at the Championship’s eve is the decision to line also the experienced driver Flavio Camponeschi, who showed all his potential at the WSK in Sarno. Together with the Roman driver, the CRG Racing team will have Hauger, Bradshaw, Janker, Alatalo, Meyer and Rosina. In KZ, the star is the World Champion Paolo De Conto, with his team mates Prosperi and Torsellini, whilst there are great expectations for CRG Holland with the Jorrit and Stan Pex brothers. The KZ2, instead, will start the 1st round in Les Mans.

WAFEPROJECT

Killian Meyer (OK): «In the first races of the year I made a lot of experience and my performances improved more and more. There a wonderful feeling with the team and I am ready to make an excellent championship». Donar Nils Munding (OK Junior): «Last year I only raced at National level, so this will be my first time competing in a European Championship with an official team, so my first goal will be qualifying among the 34 finalists. In the first races of the year I improved and learned a lot from the team’s technical staff, so I hope I will be able to achieve good results very soon. I can’t wait to start this new experience».

RACING TEAM / REVIEW ON THE AGONISTIC ACTIVITY

A positive start of the season

CUNAPHOTO.IT

An intense international race programme characterized the start of the season and the CRG Racing team confirmed to be at the top in all the categories

The main meetings of the international karting season get underway in May, with the start

It was an intense start of the season for CRG technicians and official drivers, especially committed in the technical development. Moreover, many tests were made for the tyres employed in each national championship, in some categories different from the past season. The Racing team work’s goal is also collecting useful data for future homologations (scheduled for the end of the year) and sometimes it required sacrificing the best performance to collect the needed data. The first races of the season were also a shakedown for the technical staff,

of the CIK-FIA European Championship, this year on 5 rounds, then the most important event in September with the KZ, OK and OK Junior World Championships. But even though the important races are only beginning, the first part of the season was nevertheless very demanding for the CRG Racing division, with the WSK races (Champions Cup and Super Master), the Winter Cup and Margutti Trophy.

10

> Paolo De Conto, KZ2 <

that was changed in some divisions with new entries, and especially for the drivers. About this, the regulation change on the minimum age access in the OK and OK Junior classes, contributed to the debut of many young drivers coming from 60 Mini in the OK Junior and many others from OK Junior to the OK. For instance, drivers as Bortoleto and Gomez, who already showed a great potential, entered the CRG official team coming from the 60 Mini, but they still need to make experience to reach their 100%.

The same is for Bradshaw, Meyer and Hauger, at their first year in OK. Nevertheless, the balance in terms of results is still positive, with many podiums and some significant victories, that place CRG among the potential protagonists of the 2017 agonistic season. The expectations and the premises are excellent, also in view of the international Rotax and X-30 races, where the CRG chassis are the most numerous and competitive. Also the national championships started very well, with the first results achieved in Spain and Germany.

RACING TEAM / WSK CHAMPION CUP

Supremacy IN KZ Stan Pex, Flavio Camponeschi and Jorrit Pex take it all in Adria’s KZ2. Gillian Henrion very good second on the podium of OK-Junior. CRG on top also in 60 Mini with Alfio Spina taking the win for Team Gamoto

CRG is definitely still up there. The Italian

his brother Jorrit as Camponeschi was fifth, the three young CRG drivers have been unbeatable in the Final. This result confirmed the supremacy of the Italian outfit in KZ, as happened in 2016 when Paolo De Conto won the World Championship and Fabian Federer the International Super Cup KZ2. Among the other drivers of CRG works team, Taymour Kermanshahchi was 11th and Alessandro Giardelli was relegated to P20 by a 10s time penalty.

outfit started season 2017 as the unquestionable protagonist of the first racing weekend of the year: the WSK Champions Cup held in Adria. CRG has dominated KZ2, took a podium in OK-Junior and then another victory in 60 Mini with Team Gamoto.

MAGNIFICENT TOP THREE FOR CRG IN KZ2.

CRG has claimed the whole podium of KZ2, with a top three led by the new enfant prodige Stan Pex, KZ 2015 European Champion Flavio Camponeschi and 2015 World > Henrion Gillian (333), Evann Mallet, OK Junior < Champion Jorrit Pex, all on CRG-Tm. CRG drivers have been cheered also by Max Verstappen, who has followed all the racing action in Adria. After the pole position secured by Flavio Camponeschi, and the red-hot Prefinal when Stan Pex had the upper hand proceeding

another good podium in OK-Junior thanks to the brilliant French 2015 Champion of Cadet Gillian Henrion, who was at the debut in OK-Junior with the Italian Outfit. The French driver closed his

effort in P2 behind the Russian Morozov. The German Marius Zug of team RL-Competition could have achieved a lot more, as he has been among the main protagonists of the weekend and won the Prefinal ahead of Henrion and Gomez, before ending fourth in a Final that he also led. Jose Antonio Gomez also put in a great race ending sixth, after a great Prefinal, while the Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto was seventh. Another CRG protagonist could not shine as he would have deserved in OK-Junior though. The French Evann Mallet had in fact to retire from the Prefinal due to a spin, after being among the quickest in qualifying (second quickest) and in the heats, where he ended fourth.

The INTERVIews Stan Pex, KZ2, first: «Really happy, it is great to start the year with a win. I think we have a good chance to run a strong season. The chassis has been perfect and the engine was really good as well, because all of us in top three were on TM, I am happy and I think straight to the next races. It looks good for this year». Flavio Camponeschi, KZ2, second: «It was good. Only in the Prefinal we had some small technical issues. We fixed them ahead of the Final and found the right balance I was therefore very fast. I am disappointed for the start, I had to get away from P5 due to the result of the Prefinal and I lost some ground trying and close in on the leader. At the end I was the quickest, I also set the fastest lap of the race. Had I started on a better position, I could have certainly fought for the victory».

HAUGER FORCED TO RETIRE IN OK’S PREFINAL.

An unespected retirement in Prefinal due to a problem to the spark plug stopped CRG’s Dennis Hauger run in OK. The Norwegian had been previously shining in his debut race as he set the pole position and completed very good races in the heats. CRG’s colors in this category were defended by the Finn William Alatalo, who ended in a good P14, and by Matteo Nannini, who run a good race but was slowed down by some setup problems first and by a 10s time penalty then, which made him slip down to the final P27. The victory in this category went to Pedro Hiltbrand, who secured the title of World Champion last year with CRG. Michael Rosina could not qualify in Prefinal.

Jorrit Pex, KZ2, third: «The Final was quite a hard race for me, we tried something in the setup and it didn’t work out really well. The pace has been really good for the whole weekend, only in the final the pace was not good enough to take the win. I realized this quite early in the race and I knew I had to fight for the podium as the win was not possible anymore. That’s what I did».

ALFIO SPINA WINNING 60 MINI WITH TEAM GAMOTO. The very young Alfio Spina on

CRG-Tm run by Team Gamoto has scored a stunning victory in 60 Mini. His team mate Luca Giardelli was among the quickest and fought for the victory until the closing stages, crossing the line in P4. Top ten finish for Saood Variawa of CRG Holland, seventh, and Gamoto’s Adam Putera, ninth.

RACING TEAM / 22ª WINTER CUP

PODIUM WITH DE

CONTO AND HAUGER Paolo De Conto secured the second place in KZ on CRG-Tm at the 22nd Winter Cup, as did Dennis Hauger in OK, after fighting for the victory. The young Alfio Spina took the win in Mini Rok with Team Gamoto at the end of an exciting final

CRG put in a great performance at the Winter Cup of Lonato, fielding a big and

competitive driver lineup in all categories. The strongest results came in the end mainly in KZ2, where Paolo De Conto secured the second place, and in OK with another second place claimed by a surprising Dennis Hauger. The victory of Mini Rok went to the very quick Alfio Spina and to team Gamoto. KZ2, DE CONTO PROTAGONIST. Reigning World

Champion Paolo De Conto did his best to take the KZ2 win at the 22nd Winter Cup on CRG-Tm, race that had an exceptional highly-ranked entry list of 89 international drivers. Unfortunately, De Conto had some hiccups in the heats and in the Final he had to put in a great comeback, closing his effort right in the slipstream of the winner Jemery Iglesias. Had De Conto started a bit higher up than from the eighth spot of the grid, the end result could have certainly been different. “After qualifying that did not go very well and the incident in the final heat – declared Paolo De Conto – the end result has been positive. I am very happy on how things went this weekend, as I kept increasing my speed. If I had started the Final higher up the grid, I could have fought for the victory. But I am fine with this result. This is a good start to the season.” Among the other CRG finalists of KZ2, Flavio Camponeschi confirmed his place among the front runners ending sixth, team

SRP’s Fabian Federer had to settle for P9 due to an incident after being among the absolute quickest on track. Mirko Torsellini put in strong races but lacked a little bit of speed before being handed a 10s time penalty for the incorrectly placed front fairing in the Final. Simo Puhakka run a solid weekend all the way up to the Final, where he was stopped by an incident during the first lap. The Spanish driver Enrico Prosperi had an unlucky debut and could not qualify for the Final due to a series of issues, as happened to Alessandro Giardelli and Marco Valenti that accumulated some delay in the heats. HAUGER RULING IN OK. The Norwegian driver of CRG Dennis Hauger has been dominating OK on CRG-Parilla, despite this being his first season in OK following last year’s debut in OK Junior. Hauger found his place among the main protagonists also in this category, fighting equal with more experienced drivers. In the Final he also managed to get the lead, before being pushed down to P4 and then climbing up again to P2, engaging a battle for the victory. He put in a great performance, closing his > Paolo De Conto, KZ2 < race right in Travisanutto’s slipstream, as the latter led a Zanardi kart back to the victory. Regarding the other CRG finalists of OK, the Spanish Kilian Meyer was 14th, Michael Rosina 19th and Callum Bradshaw 21st, while William Alatalo had to retire from the race.

MUNDING, GOOD DEBUT WITH CRG IN OK-JUNIOR.

CRG’s youngsters of OK-Junior displayed great speed, but could not get the most of their competitiveness in the end. The best was the German rookie Donar Nils Munding, who recovered all the way to the final P13, leading the French Evann Mallet. Gabriel Bortoleto had an excursion at the start and closed his race in P29. This was a real pity as the Brazilian had been shining in the heats and Super Heat. The Spanish driver Jose Antonio Gomez could not qualify for the Final by just one point.

The INTERVIews

STANDING APPLAUSE FOR SPINA IN MINI ROK.

Paolo De Conto, KZ2: «We’ve been fast for all the weekend, despite some tests we had to carry out as it was interesting making them in the race context. In the Final we could have won, we had an extraordinary pace but in the end we couldn’t manage to make the crucial overtake. But we are very happy with our performance and potential».

Alfio Spina and Team Gamoto have been shining again in Mini Rok. The Italian won a photo-finish Final by only 0.01s, exciting spectators. The very young Spina completed a great comeback at this Winter Cup, as he recovered from P18 after heats to the second place of Super Heat, a result that granted him a third row start in the Final. Spina recovered the remaining positions early in the Final and then managed to fend off the Russian Bedrin. Among the best drivers, Luca Giardelli of Team Gamoto ended 11th.

Dennis Hauger, OK: «I’m happy because after only 3 races I am already among the fastest drivers in the OK and today, thank to the fantastic work made by the team and our engineer (KVS), we could have really won. Travisanutto is more experienced and in the last 2 laps he didn’t leave me any space, even if I was faster, so I preferred not to waste a whole working weekend and bring home a 2nd place for our moral and the awareness of our potential». Gabriel Bortoleto, OK Junior: «I am happy and angry at the same time: happy because we were very fast during all the weekend, disappointed as in the Final start an accident deprived me of the possibility of making a nice race and fight for my first podium in the OK Junior».

> William Alatalo, OK <

Alfio Spina (Team Gamoto), MINI: «This victory with the Rok engines is very important for me, for the team and also for CRG, as it comes right after the one in Adria at the WSK with the Mini engines and different tyres, so it means that driver, team and chassis are very competitive».

RACING TEAM / WSK SUPER MASTER SERIES ROUND 1

In 60 Mini a whole

CRG podium

The first round of the WSK Super Master Series in Adria has been spoiled by bad weather. Jorrit Pex ended on the podium of KZ on CRG-Tm. The other CRG drivers stopped by incidents instead. Team Gamoto centered a one-two-three in 60 Mini

The opener of the WSK Super Master Series at the Adria Karting Raceway has taken place

ago at the WSK Champions Cup when Jorrit Pex closed his effort behind his brother Stan Pex and Flavio Camponeschi. This time around the top two went to Anthony Abbasse and Bas Lammers. Regarding the other CRG drivers, Flavio Camponeschi had to settle for P14 after the eighth place in the Final, one week after the mentioned great performance. Paolo De Conto suffered a series of problems in Prefinal and Final and had to retire due to a failure to the drive chain. Alessandro Giardelli also had to retire, but he was happy on finding his place among the finalists despite being at the debut in the shifter category, as the British driver Taymour Kermanshahchi. Stan Pex had to retire due to an incident in the opening lap after closing the Prefinal in P2. Similar fate also for polesitter Simo Puhakka.

in a very difficult weekend. The circuit was soaked with unceasing rain during the three days of the event and in the final it was close to impracticable conditions. CRG obtained positive results in Adria, but a different weather could have ended with a better result for the drivers of the Italian outfit that is well represented in all categories. JORRIT PEX ON THE THIRD STEP OF THE PODIUM IN KZ. The strong Dutch driver Jorrit Pex

managed to secure another podium for CRG in KZ on CRG-Tm, at the end of a final that has been made chaotic by the heavy rain. He put in a bold race and claimed the third step of the podium, as did one week

SEVERAL RACE INCIDENTS IN OK. Several contacts

and spins characterized the race of CRG drivers in OK, after the great speed shown in qualifying. Dennis Hauger – fourth in Prefinal, managed to cross the finish line only in 19th, while Michael Rosina was 21st and Davide Lombardo 23rd. The Spanish driver Kilian Meyer, the British Callum Bradshaw and Matteo Nannini could not qualify for the final stages due to some problems in the Prefinals.

The INTERVIew Jorrit Pex KZ2: «Difficult conditions today for everyone, I struggled a bit as but I think most of the drivers did, and in the end I am really happy because we are back on the podium again. Two races and two podiums, we keep going and try to go to higher steps instead of third. The start of the year is good and we can to do even better in the next races».

BIZZOTTO SHINING IN OK-JUNIOR. Team

Morsicani’s Leonardo Bizzotto has been the best of CRG drivers in the Final of OK-Junior and crossed the line in fifth place. The Spanish driver Ayrton Fontecha was handed a 10s time penalty ending his debut race with the works team in P20, while the Malaysian Nik Zamir Zakwan was 22nd. The French Gillian Henrion had to

retire after he confirmed the good performance shown in qualifying and in the heats with the 10th place in Prefinal. A similar fate characterized the race of the Spanish driver Jose Gomez (12th in Prefinal). The French Evann Mallet and the Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto could not qualify for the Final instead. FULL HAUL IN 60 MINI FOR CRG GAMOTO. Great results for CRG arrived from 60 Mini thanks to the excellent performance of Team Gamoto’s drivers, that managed to lock out the podium of the Final. The closing race was in fact won by Fabio Spina, who repeated the victory scored at the WSK Champions Cup. Luca Giardelli secured P2 after leading the race early on, while Malaysia’s Adam Putera completed the podium. The top three drivers were all on CRG-Tm.

BITTER WSK FOR CRG DRIVERS IN LA CONCA A series of unlucky episodes and some incidents prevented CRG drivers to get on the podium in the third round of the WSK Super Master Series at the International Circuit La Conca on March 19th. Spina 1st in 60 Mini but then penalized

A series of unlucky events stripped CRG

turn had run a great Final B ending sixth. Stan Pex and Taymour Kermanshahchi retired early from the Final. Alessandro Giardelli could not find his place among the finalists due to a retirement in Prefinal A. Paolo De Conto did not take part in this race due to a snowboarding incident in the days before the round of La Conca.

drivers from the podium in the third round of WSK in La Conca. In KZ, Flavio Camponeschi ended his race in eighth place leading Jorrit Pex. An incident in OK’s Prefinal took the Norwegian polesitter Dennis Hauger > Kilian Meyer, OK <

HAUGER MISSING OUT ON THE FINAL IN OK.

Dennis Hauger had to unexpectedly retire from Prefinal B of OK due to an incident at lap one. This did not allow him to take part in the Final, stripping the race from one of the certain protagonists of the category, as the Norwegian had set the pole position and won one heat. In the Final, Meyer, who was sixth in Prefinal B ahead of Davide Lombardo, lost some ground and had to settle for P16. Lombardo lost even more ground and > Jose Antonio Gomez, OK Junior <

off. The Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto best of OK-Junior in sixth place. Alfio Spina crossed the finish line of 60 Mini on top, but was later on issued a penalty. CAMPONESCHI EIGHT IN KZ. Flavio Camponeschi

turned out to be the best of CRG drivers in the Final of KZ on CRG-Tm. He was eighth proceeding Jorrit Pex, as the latter had been protagonist in qualifying and in Prefinal B where he clinched the third place, but could not give his best in the Final. The Dutch driver of CRG Holland Benjamin Tornqvist Persson recovered well up to the 13th place leading the Finn Simo Puhakka, who in

closed his effort in P24, while Bradshaw had to retire at lap one after the eight place he secured in Prefinal A. BORTOLETO THE BEST OF CRG’S LOT IN OK-JUNIOR.

The Dutch Kas Haverkort of team CRG Keijzer has been one of the quickest drivers throughout weekend in OKJunior and confirmed his speed with the victory of Prefinal A. Unfortunately, the Dutch driver started the Final from the outside lane and was involved in an incident at the first lap. The Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto put in a great race instead, and clinched a sixth place in > Nik Zamir, OK Junior < Prefinal and confirmed it in the Final, at the end of a nice run. The Spanish driver Ayrton Fontecha was 12th, the German Marius Zug of RL-Competition was 13th, the Spaniard Jose Antonio Gomez 18th and the Malaysian Nik Zamir Zakwan 21st. The two French drivers Gillian Henrion and Evann Mallet had an unlucky weekend instead and had to retire from the Prefinal, therefore not qualifying for the Final.

ALFIO SPINA STRIPPED OF THE VICTORY IN 60 MINI. The most spectacular Final of the weekend was

unquestionably 60 Mini’s. The race was tight from lights to flag and team Gamoto’s Alfio Spina crossed the line on top, recovering all the positions from the starting P5. Spina managed to get the lead of the race in the closing stages and kept it all the way to the flag, crossing the line leading Minì and the Norwegian team mate at Gamoto Martinius Stenshorne. At the end of the race, a penalty surprisingly hit Spina and relegated him out of the podium. The motivation for this stewards’ decision is the partial detachment of the front fairing, a measure that once again has penalized spectacle on track. The victory was therefore inherited by Minì and the second place by Stenshorne. The other team Gamoto’s driver Luca Giardelli ended within the top ten in sixth place, while the South African Saood Variawa of CRG Holland was ninth. Spina was relegated to P12 leading the Russian driver of Gamoto Miron Pingasov.

RACING TEAM / WSK SUPER MASTER SERIES ROUND 4

CRG IN SARNO FOR THE WSK CLOSER The International circuit Napoli of Sarno has staged the fourth round of the WSK Super Master and provided CRG works team with several important indications, ahead of the forthcoming CIK-FIA European Championship

The closing round of the WSK Super Master Series ended with several unlucky

occasions and recovered from two issues in the heats, the spark plug cabling and the front fairing, that lost him some ground. The front fairing rule also handed Stan Pex a time penalty in Prefinal at the end of a good race that saw him crossing the finish line in fourth position. The Dutch driver recovered well in the Final, but was unfortunately stopped by an incident. Alessandro Giardelli also put in a good performance up to Prefinal, but could not make it through to the Final due to a penalty. The Dutch driver of CRG Holland Benjamin Tornqvist Persson ended the Final within the top ten in P9. Jorrit Pex was the most highly ranked CRG driver in the championship, as he ended sixth behind Lammers, Hajek, Abbasse, Iglesias and Ardigò.

racing episodes hitting CRG works team’s drivers at the International Circuit Napoli of Sarno, but the Italian outfit managed to collect very positive indications in terms of speed and performances in all categories. The WSK round of Sarno has been particularly important eying the CIK-FIA European Championship that will kick off from Sarno in two weeks time for categories KZ, OK and OK-Junior. CRG took this weekend as a further chance to test several technical solutions. JORRIT PEX AND DE CONTO AMONG THE QUICKEST IN KZ. The best result of CRG drivers in KZ was obtained

by Jorrit Pex, who ended the Final in fifth place, while Paolo De Conto was sixth, but showed a good pace in several

productive of CRG’s lot in OK, ending seventh at the end of a good comeback. Flavio Camponeschi was unfortunately forced to skip the final stages due to a trivial technical problem he experienced at the beginning of his Prefinal, but the Italian driver of CRG has been very quick in a category he had not been racing in for five years. He has been among the absolute quickest in qualifying heats. Camponeschi is now awaited at the International CIK-FIA races. A technical problem has also stopped the Norwegian Dennis Hauger in the Final, when he was putting in a strong race that would have made him climb higher up in the charts. A technical problem prevented the Spanish driver Kilian Meyer to qualify for the Final, as happened to Michael Rosina and to the Colombian Lorenzo Alborta Paredes. The Championship was won by Novalak. CRG’s Bradshaw was 17th and Hauger 18th.

slipped down from P3, while Fontecha took a P4 that was only a tenth shy of the third place. Bortoleto closed his effort in 14th place. Among the quickest of the category, the German of CRG TB Racing Team Hugo Sasse was eighth. Luca Giardelli ended a nice race with a good P12. The French Gillian Henrion was 22nd at the end of a tough weekend instead. The German Donar-Nils Munding and Luca Griggs of team Morsicani had to retire from the Final, while the Spanish driver Jose Antonio Gomez could not go beyond Prefinal. The Championship was won by Rosso, while Bortoleto was 14th and Fontecha 18th. ANOTHER GOOD RACE FOR SPINA IN MINI.

Team CRG Gamoto has been competitive once again in 60 Mini with its very young drivers. Alfio Spina could not put in the winning sprint in the closing stages of Sarno’s Final though, but he completed a strong race nevertheless. Spina had to settle for P6, leading some other protagonists of team Gamoto: namely, the Russian Miron Pingasov and the American Nikhil Bohra. The Dutch driver of EGP Racing Team Ean Eyckmans also displayed a good shape ending the Final in 12th place. Spina closed the championship in fourth place, behind Minì, Bedrin and Antonelli.

STRONG RACES FOR FONTECHA AND BORTOLETO IN OK-JUNIOR. The Spanish Ayrton Fontecha put in a good

performance in OK-Junior. He managed to slide in the main protagonists of the Final in a tight and exciting race, that also saw CRG’s Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto among the leading group. In the closing stages of the race, Bortoleto unfortunately

RACING TEAM / THE INTERVIEW

Luca AND AleSSANDRO

GIARDELLI

Both of them official drivers of the CRG Racing team (Alessandro in KZ2 and Luca in OK Junior), they are living their educational experience in karting, supported by a passion for motorsport that involves all the familY

The family created by Sandro Giardelli and

our track makes the difference. We have several clients coming from Switzerland since we are not far from the border and the Como Lake is a very appreciated touristic venue. We are proud of having introduced so many youngsters to karting. They started to race on indoor tracks in the traditional races. Our sons actively contribute to the family business, Alessandro and Luca are really appreciated for their driving advice and this gives our company a further advantage, as we also run a karting school». «I passed down to my family my passion – Sandro Giardelli states – and now we have two quickly growing drivers in our family. Initially we relied on a team, but then we created our own. We honestly could not match the competitiveness shown at high levels and, when we had the chance to meet Giancarlo Tinini and his wonderful family, we took the decision to become part of their works team. We are happy on this choice as CRG has become our second home since the beginning». «We were a bit disappointed by the approach we had with the karting world – Sabrina Giardelli continued – and this is why we tried to directly manage a racing team of our own, but the

his wife Sabrina is a real racing family. A passion born by chance, as often happens, became a full time job with the creation of one of nicest indoor tracks in Italy in Colico by the Como Lake, and continued with the racing team for the two sons Alessandro and Luca. Both are now competing for CRG. Alessandro is successfully contesting KZ2 while Luca OK-Junior, as he comes from a positive experience in Mini with team CRG Gamoto. The family includes also the older daughter Giada that mainly manages the indoor track, and the younger Lisa – Luca’s twin – that follows her brothers on the racing tracks. «We are successfully running our track by the Como Lake – Sabrina Giardelli tells us – and even if we are far away from big cities, we are happy for the turnout, that is increasing as

challenge was too big and results depended too much on external factors». You ended up choosing CRG. What attracted you? “Well, definitely the prestige of the company, its great champions and organization – Sandro Giardelli admitted – moreover, Alessandro had fallen in love with CRG’s KZ kart and therefore the choice was rather obvious». «From my side – Sabrina Giardelli added – the decision was taken when we got to know mister Tinini and his family. That is when I made my mind up. Everything else took the back seat. We loved their transparency, the organization and the competence of mechanics. The team and Tinini family convey a great passion for motorsport. We are relaxed, knowing we are in good hands now». You took two quite important steps with CRG. Alessandro switched from Junior to KZ2 and Luca made his debut in Junior from Mini at only 12. «We are happy on these choices – Sandro Giardelli confirmed – and, after the natural early fears shared by the two kids, I can say that now they are at ease and very happy. I think that karting is a great school for children, it makes them grow and gives them responsibility. Compared to football, that is a team sport and therefore someone risks to get towed, karting is an individual discipline and this creates the perfect conditions to improve all the time. What is important to us now is to see how serene our sons are. This year we will be competing in international championships, which is another big thing for all of us».

How does miss Sabrina live this sporting adventure? «First of all, I am where my family is and here I feel comfortable. This excitement is contagious, and I fully support my sons. Sometimes I am not sure on if I am doing the right or wrong thing, but I think it is fine like this. Obviously I am quite apprehensive. I try not to make it show, but with two sons in different categories I virtually cannot take a break. I am happy for them if they run a good race, but I am always worried for their safety». You took part in the Formula Medicine programme. What do you like about it? Sabrina Giardelli: «The kids are very happy, they met very professional people. Alessandro and I have been at their headquarters in Viareggio, we had a good experience there and we will be back soon. We have a lot of commitments to reconcile, amongst which school and education, which is important for both our kids. We already had some sessions with Formula Medicine and we will go back there as soon as possible». What are objectives and plans for the future? Sandro Giardelli: «Alessandro will certainly run another year in KZ and then we will see. He already run a test on a car but it is still early days. Luca just started in Junior, therefore he has a long way in karting ahead. Future objectives are to make them both compete in motorsport, that is our next challenge. Alessandro run a Formula Renault test, that was a gift from his sister Giada. He had good fun, but he is now fully committed to karting».

Gillian Henrion is one of the most interesting

and promising French young drivers of International karting. The French Federation (FFSA) follows him closely and included him in their formation and training programme, supporting him in his career. Also CRG’s racing division bet on him, as they chose him and made him an official driver in the OK Junior class, in order to achieve important results in the WSK and CIK-FIA races. Gillian was in evidence in the youth categories in France and, last year, he was one of the best rookies in the OK Junior European Championship in Portimao. The trust and support of an important factory as CRG represents for him the opportunity to learn and grow up, but especially to aim for the same important results that one of his idols achieved with CRG: Max Verstappen. And since the first race, the WSK Champions Cup, he met the expectations, achieving an excellent 2nd place. The relation with CRG born since he was in youth categories in France, through the team CRG-KCM, with whom he won the 2015 Champion of France title in the Cadet class, after an early start when he was only 6 years old, as he tells us: «The first time I jumped on a kart, it was in the Oberlin rental track in Nancy, then I received my first racing kart for

Christmas when I was 6 years old. That’s how it all began, thanks to my dedication and my family’s support». Which are you best memories of the first races? «The first positive results arrived already in 2012, when I was the best rookie of the Minime category in the Alsace-Lorraine Championship. Then I won the regional title an year later, and in 2014 I became the National vice Champion before moving to the Cadet class and win both the French Championship and the French Cup with the CRG-KCM team in 2015. The French Championship victory in Essay in 2015 is the best memory I have until now». And which failure did you have to face? «Perhaps my worst race was at the DKM in Genk last year... it ended with an accident». How is your relationship with the CRG team? «In the past I used to race with private teams and joining an official team is a new experience for me. For sure it is an important opportunity as we have great technical equipment,

both regarding the chassis and the engine, with the Iame and KVS’ support. But it is also an opportunity in terms of image and formation, thanks to many experienced technicians that teach me a lot every day. CRG’s racing team became like a family: there is a peaceful environment and we all work together in harmony. I really feel well». How is your relationship with the other drivers? «We all have a common goal: winning. Nevertheless we respect each other and we have an excellent relationship, exchanging information and data. RACING TEAM / THE INTERVIEW

GAMOTO

The Gamoto team is one of the most winning in the Mini category and, thanks to its technicians’ experience and specialization, it shaped many young talents that moved to the CRG official team

Modern karting has undergone

important developments in the recent years, in terms of professionalism and competitiveness of all its sectors, which led to the organization and foundation of highly specialized teams. This was unthinkable in the past, but it is very actual now. Team Gamoto – the CRG satellite team dedicated exclusively to Mini – is an example of this process. Category Mini features an always wider presence of very young drivers aged from 9 to 12 and in Italy it found a fertile ground and an important international space, with drivers joining from all over the world. Gamoto is a Sicilian company founded by Vincenzo Gatto, the acronym in fact adds the initials of the owner’s surname to the suffix “moto”, which stands for motorsport. In a few years, it became the synonym of young karting talents. The team is characterized by the exclusive presence in Mini, through a project that also involved Vincenzo’s son Salvatore (aka Toti), who has an important karting experience featuring the participation to European and World Championships and motorsport’s Formula 3 and Formula Masters in his past. The experience acquired in several decades with CRG has now become business strategic and very formative for young drivers that, according to current regulations, can switch to motorsport at 15 years of age. «We have always appreciated an outfit like CRG – Toti Gatto stated – since the times of Kalì Kart. When we started this new karting programme in 2009, we decided to focus on Mini with the important support of CRG in a strengthened partnership. Our role is

to train the young generation of drivers preparing them for their future at CRG». «Back then – Vincenzo Gatto continues – CRG did not have a junior team. We put ourselves fowrard to CRG President Giancarlo Tinini to take care of this sector with the creation of a CRG team dedicated to Mini aimed at introducing drivers to higher categories. This is exactly what we did. Results have been promising since the beginning, for us as well as for CRG, and several young talents have successfully started their karting career in the factory team». What are the strengths of CRG’s racing product you employ? Vincenzo Gatto: «Definitely reliability. It is a high end product that is constantly updated and developed, thanks also to the advice of my son Toti, who works on the chassis and to the availability of the factory to follow our proposals. Giancarlo

Below, Vincenzo (on the left) and Salvatore Gatto owners of the Gamoto Team, CRG’s satellite team specialized in the 60 Mini category.

CRG Gamoto Team official drivers

Tinini’s interest has always led to the fast update of chassis that is required keep up with the racing world and always have a better product. We can honestly say that CRG and our team have reached an extremely high competitiveness in Mini, which led to very positive sporting and commercial outcomes. We are really happy on contributing to this success and we believe we can improve thanks also to the dedication of my son Toti». What is your relationship with CRG works team? «Our advantage – Toti Gatto added – is that we have a direct interaction with CRG racing department and engineers to timely perform any change that might be needed. CRG is a big company, but it continues to be very flexible and this is of paramount importance to us. We have mutual trust, which in the end goes to the benefit of both parties». Who are the most talented drivers you managed? «This is a tricky one! – Toti Gatto answered – We had a lot of young talents in the recent past. Not to hurt anyone, I’d say that we were recently impressed by the progress made by Muizz (i.e. Bin Abdul Gafar Muizzuddin), because most probably nobody would have bet on a 9 years old coming from Malaysia. Muizz left his mark in Mini, then in Junior and now in OK. Martinez, Marseglia and Hauger won quite a lot with us, and so this year Spina has won five of the seven run races so far! Among the emerging drivers, I would also mention Bortoleto, who is now in OK-Junior with CRG, and Mallet, Gomez, Giardelli… a good number of drivers that now are in higher categories have been in our team». Vincenzo Gatto completed the reasoning: «So far we

have provided a lot of drivers with a good chance to shine. I believe that some of the 15-20 kids we trained in the past few years and some that are currently racing with us from all over the world, have what it takes to be successful. This is also due to CRG that provides us with a great technical support». What is the secret to always be on top in such a competitive category that is also full of competitive teams? Vincenzo Gatto: «I think that the secret of this success goes down to the fact that we run a family business, therefore we can address chassis or engine problems directly and quickly. My son takes care of chassis, while I work on the engine. We exchange ideas and sort any issue». «What my father said is absolutely correct – Toti Gatto concluded – but I would add that part of the winning aspect is also due to the way we manage the team. We have been involved with this category for several years now and we acquired a good understanding of the fact that these kids need to be followed all around, including the emotional side of things. These young drivers are not all equal, some need more attentions than others. Parents also need to be listened to and managed carefully. I believe our secret hides here too: being patient, knowing how get our way around and when to say the right words. Serenity and patience are our secret. We obviously want the best for our drivers. If they win we are happy, but if they do not deliver we cannot wait to get back on track to improve. This is our life, we have always been in motorsport and we have a winning attitude. We never give up. We could lose a race, but we are always ready to counter charge in the following one».

MANFRED Brandl FROM PRESPO MANFRED Brandl FROM PRESPO, IMPORTER FOR GERMANY PRESPO IS ONE OF CRG’S MOST SUCCESSFUL OPERATORS, THANKS TO AN EFFICIENT ORGANIZATION ABLE TO WORK IN ALL THE MARKET’S BRANCHES

We met Manfred Brandl, Prespo’s

key man, a company that has been importing CRG’s products for the German market since 1996. Prespo represents one of the sector’s excellences, as it is organized in a rational way in order to be close to the needs of every market branch, from the top level racing to the hobby one. From the commercial and customer care point of view, a strategic role is played by the e-commerce activities, that allowed Prespo to become a well-known dealer even outside German boundaries. How is the commercial and sporting structure organized? «The key of our success is the network and the organization. The circuit of Lonato is located

less than 1km away from the factory and it is the main testing venue throughout the year for CRG Racing team (as well as for the other main teams on the international scene), due to the its logistics, but also to the important indications it always offers. We run a test in Lonato to appreciate the main technical features of the Road Rebel KZ chassis with the help of Marco Urbinati at the telemetry and that of the KZ coordinator Arnaud Kozlinski. I won the KZ World Championship on this chassis, which has also won several other international titles. It has been one of the commercially most successful CRG products for years now. The approach we use in testings moves from a standard setup configuration devised according to our experience on the testing venue, which we little by little tune to suit the track conditions at best.

Paolo De Conto, CRG works driver in KZ, together with the engineer and CRG Racing team telemetry expert Marco Urbinati.

The test described today took place in March 2017 with good track conditions (dry and good grip levels), but low track temperatures ranging from 8 to 14 degrees Celsius. We used Bridgestone tyres and in the first stint we used a low ride height (on the front and on the rear), M 20 axle of 1040, standard front linear bearings, camber 10, 3° toe-in angle and 3 front spacers. We also used standard magnesium hubs and a Tillet racing seat. The Road Rebel chassis in this configuration suits most of the race tracks and, most importantly, all rubber. Behind the wheel, its two main features are evident since the beginning: a great efficiency under braking and high cornering speed and flow. The most heavy breaking point in Lonato is corner 3, as reported by telemetry that shows a decrease in speed from 124 km/h to 45 km/h in only 18 meters in little over a second.

PRODUCT / TEST ON THE TRACK Such a strong move does not upset the entering of the corner and the chassis keeps well its forward momentum as shown by telemetry data comparing lateral acceleration and speed. A linear lateral speed without big changes indicates that the chassis has an excellent balance; this is a very important point as it will allow us to keep a constant race pace and to get the most of the engine torque. In the first stint, we posted several 47’’2s, which is a very good performance in itself, considering that the pole position time at the Winter Cup 2017 was 46’’745s and that my 46”887s was worth the seventh quickest time. In the second stint, we made the changes we always recommend to our customers: add 1° to the front and increase the track by moving one spacer. These adjustments improved the corner entering, but made us lose some cornering speed and handling. We therefore went back to 3 spacers and adjusted the snyper to a 2° load for the third stint. These settings provided the best balance of the chassis and allowed us to set the quickest time of the day in 46’’950 on used tyres. In this session, we recorded the fastest corner speed in the high-speed turn one (entering speed 136 km/h and 103 km/h throughout) and the excellent flow of the chassis kept the engine always above the 9.850 rpm mark, allowing us to focus on gear ratio choices and carburator settings to set up the engine at its best. The good chassis balance allowed me to try and take the “double” left-hander leading to the new

Paolo De Conto and his mechanic Omar Valbusa.

THE WORKSHEET CRG technicians and drivers write down all chassis setup and engine configurations on a worksheet during every testing session. These data are then processed and compared to telemetry readings and keep track of the whole work done. This is a very handy logbook to be quickly effective in on track interventions, taking decisions based on all the available information.

50

chicane in fourth gear, down-shifting to 3rd only within the corner, hence carrying more speed through. Data collected at the end of the day were very interesting and useful, as they highlighted once again that the Road Rebel chassis is very effective and quick even without any special adjustments, which allows the driver to focus on that fine-tuning often making the difference. The test has also confirmed the winning quality of the pairing of the chassis with the TM engine unit.

TELEMETRY The Italian company Starlane is CRG’s technical partner for telemetry. On track, Marco Urbinati is the engineer in charge of data acquisition and processing. He was present at this test of Lonato and obtained useful information from the collected data. The first graph highlights two useful pieces of information to assess the behaviour of the chassis and its handling: gears used in the fastest lap (46”950) and lateral acceleration. The yellow dashed line is lateral acceleration (top lateral G force is 2,2G in Lonato), which is a very important parameter as it allows technicians to evaluate the front and rear grip, traction and braking effectiveness. The more this line is constant and without spikes, the more effective and balanced the chassis is. The second telemetry screen reports some data collected in the fastest lap and, in particular, they highlight the great handling at the “double” left-hander, where rpms never fall below the 9.850 mark, allowing the driver to apply throttle at the end of the corner making the most of the engine torque. Legend: engine revolutions (red), speed (yellow), cornering

data showing (white) and lateral acceleration (green). Current data acquisition systems like Starlane used by CRG racing team allow also not very expert drivers and technicians to evaluate these parameters and the discussed points can be useful to understand what are the elements to keep into account to devise a correct chassis setup.

was like a school, and as all schools it was a training period of his life. His future was already written and he knew that. At 14 years of age he had one objective clear in his mind: becoming a Formula 1 driver. All kids competing on karts share that dream, but he had the advantage of knowing he would have made it a dream come true. «When Lewis Hamilton got on the International karting scene – Giancarlo Tinini recalled – he was racing in England with Top Kart. One day Domingos Piedade of AMG, that had a partnership with us to create a karting junior team, called me and asked if it was possible to field another young driver alongside Nico Rosberg: that was Lewis Hamilton. From that moment on, the famous team MBM was created at CRG – standing for Mercedes Benz McLaren, which gave us a lot of satisfaction».

What kind of karting driver was Lewis Hamilton? «Lewis was unquestionably a very talented driver, and that was adamant since his first races. He had skills above the average. With us he won the European Formula A Championship and the World Cup in 2000, having the upper hand on very strong rivals as his team mate Nico Rosberg, and “though” clients of the likes of Colin Brown and Robert Kubica. Lewis started season 2001 with us, but – under Ron Dennis’ wing – he then received a call from motorsport, and we know where he climbed since. Lewis was a very mature kid, he had it all figured out in his mind, knowing very well where he wanted to get to. His main drive was the desire to win, he had a competitive spirit in all what he was doing, no matter if he was running, on the onewheel bike or playing football. STORIES / CRG CHAMPIONS as is normal for kids of their age. It was good to see such a pairing, but when they put the helmet on, things changed: both wanted to emerge... as later on happened in Formula 1, things were no different compared to back then. Their story started with karting and ended in Formula 1, but never changed».

HIS career Lewis Hamilton’s career started on karts. He won the Cadet British Championship at 10 years of age. He got in Ron Dennis’ good books since the beginning and became part of McLaren’s Young Driver Development Program. Following further victories in the British Cadet, he continued his karting career with the British team Zip Kart on Top Kart-Comer. Lewis moved to CRG in 2000 to compete at the international level thanks to AMG’s Domingos Piedade. Lewis Hamilton became part of the Italian team alongside Nico Rosberg, and team MBM – acronym of Mercedes Benz McLaren – was built within CRG with Dino Chiesa directing the two fifteen years old drivers. The team has been active in 2000 and 2001. Lewis Hamilton won the European FA Championship in 2000 leading Nico Rosberg, and the World Cup in Motegi (Japan). At the end of year 2001 he moved to motor racing in Formula Renault. Lewis Hamilton won the 2003 British Formula Renault, 2005 Formula 3 and 2006 GP2. In 2007, he was the first black driver of Formula 1 making his debut with McLaren and challenged team mate Fernando Alonso and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen for the title until the closing round in Brazil. In 2008, Lewis Hamilton took his maiden Formula 1 Championship. In 2013 he moved to Mercedes and won again the Formula 1 Championship in 2014 and 2015. He was second in 2016 when his team mate Nico Rosberg took his maiden title.

How is Giancarlo Tinini’s relationship with Lewis Hamilton? «Our relationship has always been very good, as that with his dad Anthony and the whole family. We had mutual respect without any hidden agenda. I recall when he came to Lonato with his younger brother Nicolas and Nico. We had a great time together. In that test in Lonato everybody was stricken by the love and care Lewis showed for his brother. That is another aspect of Lewis that not very many know».

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, team mates in CRG.

MediaPortal Daimler AG

Hamilton has been more successful than Rosberg though... «Their racing style was different. Lewis was more resolute, and I believe this is why he has been more successful. Nico was always close, he never gave up. Just to exemplify Lewis’ motivation, he managed to win the European Championship despite running basically with a plastered arm due to a domestic incident and was crying for the pain. His determination was impressive, you knew that when he put the helmet on, he got off to take the win, without compromise. If you look back at his World Cup race in Motegi (Japan) you can see all his grit and wish to win. In Formula 1, Lewis has put the same grit and determination of the karting days on track. Some others were flat on karts and they stayed the same in Formula 1».
