WELCOME LETTER Hello readers

Well, autumn’s here already! We hope you all enjoyed the summer (soggy as it was, in parts!) and the tentative return to something that resembles normality. Fingers crossed rates of COVID-19 will remain manageable and we’ll continue throughout autumn and hopefully into the festive season with much more freedom to spend time with those we love doing the things we enjoy. There’s no doubt that these past 18 months or so have been a challenge but there have been some silver linings amongst the clouds and, as Christmas approaches, we can hope for better times ahead. Providing there’s no return of restrictions, this autumn it’ll be nice to enjoy some of the traditions that we missed out on last year, such as Halloween and Bonfire Night. The ‘Halloween House’ on Rawson Green will be opening again this year on 31st October for their wonderful Halloween walk through. Each year, homeowners Gary and Lesley transform their front garden (at 17 Rawson Green, Kilburn DE56 0LN) into a spooky trail that’s open to all and, in doing so, raise hundreds of pounds for Children in Need. After the event was cancelled last year due to lockdown, expect something truly spook-tacular this year! It’s open from 4pm and all are welcome. Bonfire Night this year falls on a Friday and there are a number of organised local displays that weekend. If you’re planning a bonfire party at home please do take care and be safe – and remember to check for hedgehogs who may be nestling in the bonfire pile before you light it! Also, be mindful that many pets (and some small children) aren’t keen on fireworks so limiting your fireworks parties to that weekend only can help towards minimising their distress. Don’t forget, daylight saving time ends on 31st October, so you’ll need to put your clocks back an hour… which means an extra hour in bed! This also means that it will be darker earlier on, so remember to wear reflective clothing and carry a torch when you’re out and about in the evenings. The summer evenings of sitting in the garden

enjoying a drink in the late evening sunshine may be over, but there’s still enjoyment to be had from wrapping up warm and toasting marshmallows over a fire pit! Our beautiful local countryside looks even more stunning during the autumn months, when the leaves begin to turn giving an array of rich colours to the landscape. There’s nothing nicer than a refreshing walk on a crisp autumn day … and if it happens to end in one of our lovely local hostelries then that’s even better! Talking of which, we’d like to thank The Queens Head in Little Eaton for kindly providing a two course meal for two as the prize for this issue’s Crossword Competition – and, of course, there’s the usual bottle of Champagne up for grabs in our ‘Champagne Sudoku’ competition, too. There’s also a Wordsearch Competition in this edition - you could win a signed copy of ‘Sarah-Jane’s Secret’ a book written by local award-winning author Janet Scaife and set in Milford. Cosy Autumn Getaways in the UK Our summers may be temperamental, but there’s no doubt that the UK excels when it comes to cosy autumn staycations. With ongoing uncertainty about holidays abroad, campfires under the stars, crisp forest air and cosy log cabins sound like an appealing alternative. Short Story I-Spy “Maggie, wake up!” Suzette nudged her friend urgently. “Look out the window at that woman over there!” “Are we there yet?” Maggie grunted drowsily, rubbing her eyes. “Of course we’re not!” Suzette snapped. “We’re miles away.” After several choruses from the back row of ‘The Wheels on the Bus go Round and Round’ the wheels had suddenly ceased turning. “Emergency roadworks,” the coach driver had announced dryly. “Looks like we’re all just going to have to be patient before we can play with our buckets and spades.” Maggie had promised her a fun day trip to the seaside. Just a short coach ride, she’d said, where they could amuse themselves with travel games and chat. Then Maggie had promptly nodded off the moment the coach left the station and all Suzette had seen so far was grass verge, petrol stations and road signs. Right now they were bumper-to-bumper through a nondescript village, no glimpse of the sea in sight. “Just look at her over there.” Suzette prodded her finger at the window. “Isn’t she the spitting image of that woman?” “What woman?” Maggie adjusted her glasses and followed her gaze. “You mean that woman over there trimming her hedge?” “Yes, her,” Suzette insisted. “Wait until she turns round, then you’ll see what I mean.” The woman continued to trim the hedge, oblivious to her captive audience. “It’s her, isn’t it?” Suzette said excitedly. “That woman, oh you know, she used to be the treasurer for the dramatics society, it’s on the tip of my tongue.” “Oh,” Maggie nodded, “you mean Mrs Newton-Dainty? Yes, she had a coat like that.” She yawned. “But didn’t she pass away five years ago?” “That’s what we were told, but you know what, Maggie,” Suzette frowned, “I always thought there was something suspicious about it, didn’t you?” “Not really, she was very frail,” Maggie shrugged. “I thought she had a good innings to be honest.” “But it was sudden, wasn’t it?” Suzette remembered now. “And I’d just given her my deposit for the Christmas meal.

I never did get that back.” “Good grief,” Maggie snorted. “Trust you to think of something like that!” “But here she is now,” Suzette raised her eyebrows, “trimming her hedge, bold as brass!” “Suzette, are you seriously suggesting she faked her own death?” Maggie helped herself to a mint. “For the sake of ten quid?” “She might be one of those con artists,” Suzette’s eyes widened. “Manoeuvres herself into a position of trust and then, poof, vanishes with her ill-gotten gains.” “But we went to her funeral,” Maggie protested. “I thought it was very moving.” “Empty coffin,” Suzette nodded sagely. “Easy to pull off, with a backhander to the right person.” “She’s got a double garage,” Maggie observed. “Must be a lot of Christmas meal deposits paid for that.” She tapped sharply on the window as the coach crawled forward. “What are you doing?” Suzette gasped in horror. “Trying to get her attention,” Maggie said. “Then we can wave at her.” “Don’t!” Suzette slunk low in her seat. “She’ll know we’re on to her.” “And then what?” Maggie laughed. “Set her underworld connections onto us?” “I don’t know!” Suzette shrugged, exasperated. “Pull your hat down anyway.” The woman put down her hedge trimmers and turned round, revealing herself to be not a woman at all but a teenage boy. “Oh, it isn’t her,” Suzette said flatly. “I have to say,” Maggie waved gaily at the boy as they drove past, “that was the most exciting game of I-Spy I’ve ever played.” By Jackie Brewster

Post a Letter Today! World Post Day is marked on the 9th of October. This is the date when the Universal Postal Union was established in 1874. We are so used to communicating via modern means – text messaging, mobiles and emails – that we miss out on the joy of the good old-fashioned letter. Time saving and convenience have been prioritised over meaningful connection. How many ‘friends’ do you have on social media? How many of them are you regularly in contact with? Sending a letter, card or gift shows true thought and care towards the recipient. Writing a letter, buying a stamp and then walking to the post box all takes effort and energy. This effort could even be appreciated years later. I recently discovered letters I wrote to family whilst studying (this term is used very loosely) at university. It transported me 20 years back in time.

So why is it still important to handwrite letters?

It’s good for your mental health According to one study, reading and writing is good for your health. It can slow the rate of cognitive mental decline by up to 15%. Letter writing keeps you mentally alert. Daily writing works your brain which increases your ‘cognitive reserve’. This effectively helps ward off dementia. What was the last letter you received in the post? Another reminder to return overdue library books? Or is that just me? Receiving a handwritten letter will be the highlight of someone’s day. Sure to bring a welcome smile, the effort of letter writing will definitely be appreciated.

It focuses us in the moment Sending an electronic message takes hardly any time. We can message on the move – and many of us do. Whilst taking the kids to school or walking the dog. We are ultimately distracted from life. Writing a letter requires us to set aside quality time to sit with pen and paper. It focuses us on the current moment giving us time to pause. We are more conscious of what we want to express. It prompts us to think about the reader We are no longer casually posting a picture of our dinner on social media. We are engaging in a relationship with a particular person. We consider how they will interpret our words and the value of our message. Whilst writing a letter, we are connected to the person we are writing to. It improves our writing skills Let’s face it, some people rarely pick up a pen. When they do, they can’t remember how to physically write. They have been glued to screens and laptops for so long it really is becoming a forgotten art. The act of writing is slower. This means we are more aware of our errors; it’s not as easy to delete them. We are forced to think carefully before we put pen to paper. It encourages honesty I’m sure we’ve all experienced sending a message, regretting it and hastily pressing ‘delete for all’. This can’t happen with a letter. The written word has more staying

Just a Thought... You Did That on Purpose

Do you remember having childhood disagreements where a teacher would utter that most cutting statement, ‘You did that on purpose’? You would then leap to the defence of your actions citing 173 reasons why this absolutely was not the case and hoped you would not have to wait it out, sat for an age in the naughty corner! I have often thought on those Halcyon days with a greater degree of wisdom than I had at the time (age will do that to you). I think that we were supposed to feel that doing something with intent and therefore ‘purpose’ was something negative. I understand that was probably because the intent in question was to put glue into Melanie Smith’s hair (32 years too late but, sorry!) However, as we have grown older (not ‘up’ – that’s optional and I have opted out!) I think we rather fear living ‘on purpose’.

We have desires and dreams that smoulder in our soul but when we dare to consider adding intention to this heady mixture with the outcome of a purpose, we simply stop and put the lid back on that package of possibility. Maybe we need to tap into our childhood vim and vigour when it comes to really going for something in our adult lives. So next time you find yourself musing over whether to change career, run a 5k or buy that Penny Farthing (I still want one) I want you to close your eyes, take a deep breath, visualise the splat of the glue in dear Melanie’s hair and GO FOR IT! Live your life full of intent and absolutely ‘On Purpose’. If you don’t, there will be a seat waiting for you in your favourite corner…

And never the twain shall meet. • Separate appointments with a financial advisor, but not one either of them has recently started dating on the quiet. • A top ten list of recipes for one, or ready meals for one, depending upon skill, aptitude and access to condiments. • A skydiving voucher (refundable) to experience something scarier than the end of a relationship. This one does contain a parachute.

Beer West Coast IPA The beer style known as India Pale Ale, or IPA for short, has its own distinct history and origin. As the British Empire expanded further east into India, they found the climate unsuitable for brewing the country’s traditional ales. As a precaution to keep the beer flavourful during the months-long journey from England to India, the beer was treated to an abundance of hops, far more than the typical recipe would allow. This new bitter ale was a hit, and eventually the beer became lighter and easier to drink while still packing that hop punch. As the American craft beer scene blossomed in the 1980s and 1990s, this new wave of breweries sought to redefine forgotten traditional European styles, including the IPA. Over time, American IPAs evolved into their own subgroups. One of the most popular IPA styles in recent years is referred to as the West Coast IPA. West Coast IPAs are notable for their big tropical and citrus fruit aromas. The malt base is relatively mild, giving those bright fruit notes prime billing and expanding from the smell into the flavour. There is no balance here — West Coast IPAs are all about the hops. The mouthfeel is light to moderate and the finish is crisp and dry. The slightly aggressive alcohol percentage (6 to 8 percent) is masked by the orange, pineapple, and papaya flavours. Great examples include what many claim to be the best of type: Russian River – Pliny the Elder (8%) A true leader in the hop-wars of the west coast, Pliny the Elder hits you over the head with hoppy bitterness and manages to smooth the rough edges out enough to become an enjoyable brew. Pentrich – Mark it Zero (8%) Imperial West Coast IPA hopped with Simcoe and Chinook.

NEIPA The New England IPA is a relatively new style originally brewed out of Vermont. It showed up on the beer consumer radar around 2011, but it was not until after 2015 that the style really exploded and became one of the most sought-after styles. The style supposedly began 14 years ago with an IPA called the Heady Topper, brewed by The Alchemist brewery. Brewer John Kimmich experimented with an IPA recipe, deciding not to filter nor pasteurise the beer – both common methods used to extend a beer’s shelf life. This resulted in a thicker IPA with microscopic compounds, enzymes, and cultures that added both flavour and aroma. Customers started to recognise it for its distinct taste, aesthetic appearance which was unusually murky, almost like orange juice; hence it’s nickname, the hazy IPA. Neon Raptor – A Few Moments Later (7.2%) This is a soft, almost spongy New England IPA with Simcoe, Amarillo and Columbus hops. It’s citrusy and yellow and great to share with neighbours. Verdant – Even Sharks Need Water (6.5%) Simcoe, Citra and Galaxy combine with a super-fruity house yeast strain to make a classic New England IPA – just a hint of bitterness, and a balance of sharper citrus fruits to stop the tropical aroma being too sweet.

Word on Wine Hopefully we will be enjoying an Indian summer when you read this, and we can still enjoy a glass of chilled white wine. The wine I would like to introduce to you is Torrontés. This is becoming the signature white wine variety of Argentina. The variety is believed to be a descendant of an indigenous grape variety from Galicia in north-west Spain, although there is no genetic evidence of this. A lot of people have emigrated from Galicia to Argentina over the centuries, but the wine produced in Spain is different from the Torrontés wine of Argentina. The Torrontés grape in Argentina is suited to being grown in the dry, high altitude areas with long dry summers producing a wine with pure fruit flavours. A lot of Torrontés, which produces a fragrant, overalcoholic and sometimes bitter wine, is blended with other white grape varieties to produce easy drinking wines. However, in a few cases, with care, the wine can produce an easy drinking wine on its own. One good example of this is the Vinalba Torrontés 2020 from the Valle de Uco area of Mendoza in Argentina from Majestic Wines. This is a 100% Torrontés unoaked wine with pure fruit flavours of white peaches, lychees and pears. The vines are, on average, 10 years old and, due to the dryness of the region, are grown 950m above sea level in the foothills of the Andes mountains. They use low frequency irrigation to keep the vines alive but also control growth vigour and sun exposure to produce high quality grapes. The grapes are harvested in late March by hand in small trays to prevent damage. The grapes are then meticulously sorted before being pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks using specially selected yeasts, and is temperature controlled between 14 – 16ºC. The juice is macerated on the skins for 8 hours.

Indonesian Chicken with Buckwheat Noodles A hearty meal in a bowl, lightly spiced and packed with nutrient-rich vegetables. This dish contains a wealth of anti-inflammatory ingredients including ginger, garlic and turmeric together with immune-supporting shitake mushrooms and coconut. Buckwheat noodles, also called soba, are a nutritious staple in Asian dishes. Preparation time: 15 minutes Marinate: at least 1 hour Cooking time: 18 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1 lemongrass stalk, chopped Handful of coriander leaves 1 small onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 cm piece of root ginger, grated 1 tbsp coconut sugar or honey 1 tbsp tamari soy sauce 1 tbsp fish sauce ½ tsp turmeric 1 tsp garam masala 400ml coconut milk Salt and pepper 4 skinless, boneless chicken thighs or 2 chicken breasts, cut into large chunks 1 tbsp coconut oil or olive oil 1 red chilli, deseeded and diced 1 bunch of pak choi cut into strips 100g mangetout 4 shitake mushrooms, sliced 60g cooked buckwheat noodles or rice noodles Handful of bean sprouts 2 spring onions, chopped

Nutrition per serving: 394kcal, fat 16.5g (of which saturates 7g), carbohydrate 29.2g (of which sugars 24.1g), protein 32.3g. Method: Place the lemongrass, coriander, onion, garlic, ginger, coconut sugar (or honey), tamari soy sauce, fish sauce, turmeric, garam masala and coconut milk in a blender and process until smooth. Pour over the chicken. Season with a little salt and pepper. Marinate for at least one hour. Heat the coconut or olive oil in a wok or frying pan. Drain the chicken, reserve the marinade and stir fry the chicken for 2-3 minutes. Add the chilli, pak choi, mangetout and mushrooms and cook for a further minute. Add the marinade and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the chicken is cooked. Toss in the noodles. Sprinkle over the bean sprouts and spring onions to serve.

Dovedale is very popular with walkers and can become overrun with visitors on the valley floor path, especially on the southern section from Thorpe to Milldale. However there are other options and this Peak District walk goes some way to avoiding the crowds! By staying with the high ground on either side of the dale one can enjoy the views in peace and also better appreciate the excellent White Peak scenery en route. The Route 1. There is a large car park a few hundred metres south of Thorpe Cloud (grid ref. SK146508) where there are toilets and a cafe. Leave the car park and head north along the lane, turning right over the first footbridge with the first objective – the shapely summit of Thorpe Cloud – in view. The old path has been diverted to assist with

renewal/erosion work and the approach is now from the east over a longer and easier line. The summit of this small top is soon reached and provides a good vantage point for the next stage of the walk. 2. Head off the summit down the steep path towards the stepping stones over the River Dove. Go through the gate and follow the main path for a few hundred metres north. Then turn right to head up the side of the dale on a clear rising path that takes you to the top of Lover’s Leap. The crowds have now been left behind and, apart from a short busy section at Milldale, you will have the landscape to yourself for much of this round. 3. After enjoying the view at Lover’s Leap turn east. Take the clear path that heads towards Moor Barn and continue on the waymarked route to reach a right of way that goes north (grid ref 160518) to Bostern Grange Farm. Continue through the farm to follow a farm track forking left almost immediately to stay on a northerly course across fields. At the path junction (grid ref 149541) ignore the path heading directly to Milldale, instead opting for the slightly more circuitous route

over Shining Tor. This offers a very pleasant approach to the hamlet of Milldale providing an excellent taste of the northern half of Dovedale. Note that Milldale can be very busy especially during holiday weekends, which is in complete contrast to the outward high level section of the route. 4. In Milldale, cross the bridge and take the path (signed but half hidden by the toilets) that leads steeply uphill and south along the western bank of the Dove. There is a warning notice about the path being impassable after heavy rain and this should be heeded if the river is high. The path is muddy in places (but offers a quieter route to the main path on the eastern side of the river) and leads to Hall Dale - an excellent example of a dry valley. 5. Stay on the west side of the river to reach Ilam Rock where a path climbs steeply up through the woods. There now follows a pleasant high level walk along the western rim of Dovedale to reach Air Cottage. Turn west to Ilamtops Farm and south on a signed right of way to reach Bunster Hill. There are many paths in this area but it is best to aim due south to reach a col between Bunster Hill and a small outlying top. From here, the onward route to the Izaak Walton Hotel and the car park becomes obvious. Even on a busy weekend when the Thorpe Stepping Stones and Milldale are bustling with people, you can enjoy a quiet walk away from the crowds by following this route. Footnotes: Athlete’s Foot In the warmer temperatures of the summer and autumn months we are more likely to suffer from Athlete’s Foot which is a fungal infection. Fungi love warmth and moisture the exact conditions inside our shoes or boots particularly in hot weather, although sandal wearers can quite often suffer as well, due to the skin becoming dry and losing its protective oils. The main symptoms of the condition are itchiness and a feeling of intense heat on the feet. A red scaly rash may be visible particularly between the third, fourth and fifth toes on one or both feet. There is often a painful stinging sensation if we try to scratch the affected area and, in severe cases, cracked and peeling skin which is prone to further infections. Good hygiene is very important to treat the condition and also to avoid it spreading. Stay on top of your vitamin D levels This super nutrient not only strengthens your bones and dampens inflammation in the body, but it also staves off colds and flu. Recent research has shown that if your levels are low you are 36% more likely to catch a cold. As vitamin D is classed as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, we definitely don’t get much of this over winter. 2. Strengthen your gut The microbes in your gut not only help your body digest your food, but they regulate your metabolism and immune system. In fact, 70% of your immune system is in your gut. Eating fermented food (bio-live yogurt, miso, kimchi, kefir) is a great way to boost your gut bacteria, along with popping a good probiotic. This is definitely on my further education list as I firmly believe this is the key to overall health.

4. Sleep Getting enough sleep is crucial for a cold-free winter and also for speedy recovery. Having recently had a cold I can vouch for this. Lack of sleep increases the levels of cortisol (stress hormone) in your body; this will definitely take its toll on your immune system. 5. Zinc and vitamin C When you start to feel run down, reach for zinc and vitamin C. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, fresh fruits and vegetables and should be part of your winter regime. Zinc is found in fish, poultry, legumes, nuts and seeds, and can help curb flu-like symptoms and also shorten the duration if you do get the dreaded flu. The Best Used Electric Vehicles For those looking to make the switch to electric on a budget, plug-in power doesn’t have to break the bank. Electrification is taking the car world by storm and battery-powered vehicles are really starting to surge in popularity. A knock-on effect of this is that more EVs are entering the used car segment, so let’s look at some of the options. Nissan Leaf – £5,000 This well-sized electric car has been on sale for quite some time now and a £5,000 budget will get you a very early model. Though it won’t offer the longest range, it provides a great EV entry point.

Britain’s Quirkiest Bonfire Night Celebrations November is the month for firework displays, when adults and children gather together to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ as fiery fountains erupt, Catherine wheels spin and rockets light up the night sky. It’s a fun family event, but our 21st century firework displays seem like pretty tame stuff when compared to the bonfire festivities enjoyed in times gone by. Fire festivals have been held for thousands of years but the practice of marking 5th November with bonfires and fireworks began as a rowdy celebration to mark the deaths of the conspirators who tried to blow up England’s parliament in 1605, with activities calculated to make any modern-day health and safety officer run for cover. While it’s no bad thing that firework displays are now controlled and regulated to avoid accidents, some of the devil-may-care spirit that was once the hallmark of November 5th seems to have been lost. However, there are certain parts of the UK where risk and excitement are an essential part of the enjoyment. Anarchic fun in Sussex Welcome to Bonfire Night in Lewes, Sussex, where the smell of burnt gunpowder is always accompanied by a faint whiff of anarchy. It’s a night of celebration that promises activities that are – to quote the website lewesbonfirecelebrations.com – “not suitable for very young children … the frail or if you have breathing problems.” Each year this bonfire event turns the normally sleepy town of Lewes into a heady combination of raucous street bands, rowdy processions, heaving crowds and huge effigies – usually in the form of hated public figures of the day – made for the sole purpose of being consigned to the flames amidst cheers, jeers and cat-calls. The town uses Bonfire Night as an opportunity to uphold the traditions of free speech and to remember the dead, particularly the seventeen Protestant martyrs who were burned at the stake in Lewes between 1555 and 1557 under the reign of ‘Bloody Mary’ (Queen Mary I). Their martyrdom is marked annually by a procession of 17 burning crosses. Tar Barrel Racing in Devon Another place you might prefer to avoid on Bonfire Night

if you are of a nervous disposition is Ottery St. Mary, in Devon. This tranquil West Country town changes character on the night of 5th November, becoming the stage for a perilous and fiery race through the streets. Only those who were born in ‘Ottery’, or who have lived there for most of their lives, are allowed to take part in this exhilarating and risky spectacle, which involves setting light to huge wood and iron barrels soaked in tar. The contestants then carry the burning barrels through the town at great speed. Some families have been taking part in the races for many generations and almost 10,000 people turn up each year to cheer them on. Up Helly Aa Another quirky UK fire festival takes place at the end of January and has been successfully banishing the winter gloom for residents of Lerwick in Shetland for almost 140 years. This day-long festival, a celebration of Viking roots, sees a thousand local male ‘guizers’ – clad in fancy dress and carrying flaming torches – follow a specially-made Viking galley along a route through the town. The climax of the celebrations is the ship’s fiery send-off to Valhalla. As in Lewes, there’s a spirit of satire and mischief in the air, with sketches poking fun at local figures and a large number of ‘guizers’ dressing in drag. These celebrations – tapping into our primitive feelings about fire as something to be loved, feared and respected – are a powerful way of bringing communities together. Although no-one would want to return to the days when members of the public could be injured when activities got out of hand, it’s good to know that some UK communities are still prepared go to such lengths to let their hair down and celebrate together. Gardening Garden Trends – What’s Hot and What’s Not Passion for gardens has probably never been greater. Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions that we were all obliged to follow, outside spaces have taken on a whole new vibe. The trend for utilising even the tiniest of outdoor areas is probably here to stay – at least for the next few years. Many of us have created garden ‘rooms’, where the inside flows into an outdoor kitchen and dining area. The lines between indoors and out have blurred. It is no longer unusual for people to install outdoor fridges, cookers, storage, food-preparation surfaces and, of course, seating. The latter will probably include a dining table with chairs but also an outdoor lounge with comfortable furniture. Sometimes this can take up most of the garden, but hopefully there will be some attractive planting to provide screening, perhaps a soothing water feature and definitely a firepit so that everyone can stay outside during the evening. Gardens need life But is this impressive display of luxury any good for gardens? Paving over lawns and restricting planting to very limited zones isn’t great for biodiversity. Beware of creating a desolate, cheerless space with little life to be found. Most people love the softness that plants bring to hard landscaping, therefore every opportunity should be taken for prioritising plants over paving. Ideally, we should aspire to create a garden that can perform many functions. A seating place amongst the planting enables us to enjoy it to the full. Above all else we should make provision for wonderful plants

that will attract pollinators, provide structure, movement, scent, colour and soak up the excesses that the sky deposits. Plants absorb pollution, they clean the air and produce oxygen. Just relax by some lush planting and see how it makes you feel – plants really are good for us. Allow a little rewilding in your garden and consider it a compliment when spiders and insects populate your space. Don’t be tempted to prune your hedge every time it grows beyond the picture-book rectangle. Try to change the way you see things and avoid the concept of a tidy garden. These can be hostile places in terms of nature. What’s been trending in gardens over the last two years? • Al fresco dining, often with built-in appliances and heating and even a retractable canopy. • The concept of extending interior decor into the garden, decorating gardens with lanterns, ornaments, colourful accessories, rugs and cushions. Some even sacrifice kitchen dressers, sofas and throws in a bid to make a bold outdoor statement that creates a cosy space. • Grow-your-own. At least fourteen per cent of adults in the UK are following a meat-free diet. Almost half the population now grows fruit and vegetables at home. Not only is it fun and rewarding, but it can be completely chemical-free too. • Dry stone walling, gabion walls using wire baskets filled with stones, rocks and boulders are all increasing in popularity. These contemporary features combine style with function and they provide wonderful nooks and crannies that are valuable for wildlife. • Porcelain garden paving is the surface of choice for a growing number of householders. Porcelain can look like stone but is less porous therefore it doesn’t turn green quite so easily. It’s long-lasting, tough, slip-resistant and contemporary. • Sowing seeds and planting for wildlife. There has been a record demand for wildflower and other seeds over the last eighteen months, with sales increasing more than 600 per cent. By Caroline Knight

Heroic dogs with skills that save lives While technology offers some amazing new ways of tracking down lost people and animals, there are many rescue scenarios where dogs’ natural skills have proven infinitely superior to high-tech gadgets. Here we look at the way their unique abilities are being harnessed to save lives. ‘Newfies’, superdogs of the sea Possessed of unusual strength and resilience, Newfoundland dogs were highly valued by Canadian fishermen, who also prized their calm and loyal nature. With their muscular build, thick coats and webbed paws, Newfoundlands are completely at home in the water. At Portishead Marina near Bristol, a charity called Newfound Friends makes the most of the Newfies’ remarkable talents. The dogs not only work in children’s hospices as therapy dogs, they also take part in sea rescues and rescue training, showing off their skills at festivals across the UK. Ellie Bedford, a volunteer and trainer with the charity, told the TV channel Beastly: “No human can do what these dogs can do. I’m a lifeguard myself and I would struggle to tow two people, whereas these guys can pull in ten people.”

Bear was brought up in a domestic setting, but with his high energy levels and obsessive/compulsive behaviours it quickly became clear that he was never going to be a family pet. Fortunately an animal conservation charity spotted his potential after he was abandoned by his owners. “He was a very high-energy young adult and apparently ate the whole flat he was living in,” his trainer Romane Cristescu told the Australian Geographic magazine. Ironically the qualities that made him unsuitable as a pet have made him the perfect rescue dog. Romane puts Bear’s previous bad behaviour down to boredom, commenting: “his worst nightmare is to be left behind when you go to work.” However, once the dog started his koala detection training, he showed an outstanding ability to locate suffering animals. Raising rescuers’ spirits Bear rescued a hundred koalas that would otherwise have died in the blackened and burned-out landscape of the Australian bush. In addition to this impressive record, he has also played an important role in keeping his human team-mates’ spirits up.

A bad start for Bear Today many different breeds are used in search and rescue operations, but the victims they search for are not always human. The terrible bushfires in Australia displaced and killed up to three billion wild animals, including thousands of koala bears. During an epic

Property Matters Don’t Delay, Act Today! Things Always Take Longer Than You Think We’ve noticed over the years that homeowners want their extension finished and ready for the summer, or by Christmas – and you can understand why. Unfortunately, however, most homeowners start to think about things a couple of months too late. We get calls in early January from customers wanting a summer completion when they really needed to start the ball rolling in November or December. Similarly we get calls in the height of summer when Easter is a better bet for a Christmas completion. Here’s why: 1. Design lead in – even in these times any designer worth his salt has some work on his books. Be suspicious of someone who can start right away. At least two weeks lead in is reasonable. 2. Survey and design time – Your designer needs to make a measured survey of your house, then discuss your needs and wishes, draw up a design and amend it a couple of times until you’re happy with it. This can easily take two to three weeks.

3. Planning application – The finished design will often require planning permission. If it goes smoothly this can take up to eight weeks. 4. Production drawings – You should always wait for planning approval before proceeding with the more detailed technical drawings as these can be difficult and expensive to change should the planners require any amendments to the layout. These drawings can take another two weeks to produce. 5. Building Regulations approval and tendering – You can run these concurrently, but they will both take more or less another three weeks. 6. Construction phase – Depending on the size and complexity this can vary from 6 weeks to 6 months, but on average most extensions are built in ten to twelve weeks. This gives you a total of between six and seven months from start to finish. So, don’t delay! If you’re planning on an extension that is going to require planning approval, give us a call today in readiness for completion in the summer months. The Diary of a Local Mum Any Dream Will Do

Have you ever looked at your kids and wondered what their future holds? What they’ll do when they grow up, where they’ll go, the adventures they’ll have, what they’ll achieve? Many children’s dreams change throughout their young lives – and, let’s face it, will continue to change throughout adulthood, too (if I’m entirely honest I’m still not sure what I want to do when I grow up!) others seem to be born to follow a particular path, loving to dance, sing or showing a particularly inquisitive mind or caring nature from being tiny tots. As wide-eyed toddlers, your children may want to be astronauts, pilots, firefighters, zoo keepers, explorers. As they grow and discover more about the world they may be inspired by those they meet to become nurses, teachers, vets, scientists or musicians. They may harbour ambitions to be an Olympian, travel the world, make films, take photographs, write books or create art. As teenagers, they may well acquire a desire to be a You Tuber or a professional gamer, both of which are apparently now viable career options… But, as parents, what should we do with these dreams? Encourage them no matter what, or rein them in with a healthy dose of realism to prevent future disappointment? We inevitably want to protect our kids and, in doing so, it’s tempting to shield them from potential failure. It’s hard not to meddle when you think their dreams are improbable or impractical, but you don’t want to rain on their parade and squash their ambitions before they’re even given a chance. Imagine looking back and realising you’re the reason they didn’t follow their heart? Did Charli D’Amelio’s parents advise her to stop wasting her time on TikTok? She’s now got several million ways to prove them wrong! Even if it doesn’t work out maybe we need to let them fall in order to learn how to get back up again?

It’s also difficult not to let our own experiences, regrets, mistakes or dreams influence the way we encourage or advise our kids, but sometimes we just have to bite our tongue and watch them take their own journey, with our full support and encouragement regardless. It’s true that not everyone will manage to accomplish their heart’s desires but by following a certain path and doing the things they enjoy, hopefully they’ll find happiness and fulfilment along the way. I recently heard an interview with stand-up comedian Chris Ramsey, which really resonated. He said his parents encouraged him to have a backup option, in case comedy ‘didn’t work out’. He refused, saying that would have given him a reason to give up … which, given his TV appearances, sell-out tour and award-winning podcast, he clearly didn’t. He had his sights clearly set on success and claims the ‘fear factor’ of having no other option drove him when times were tough. I would probably have advised the same as his parents, but his comments made me rethink my stance. If he’d trained in something else ‘just in case’ would he still have a sell-out stand up tour? Possibly not. I do believe that, if you want it enough, most people are capable of most things (obviously there are certain caveats, but generally speaking!) and I tell my kids “Don’t believe anyone who tells you you can’t.” I was thrilled to hear cyclist Mark Cavendish echo this exact sentiment in a recent interview after coming back from illness to win the green jersey in this year’s Tour De France, storming to victory in four stages and bringing his overall total to a record equalling 34 stage wins. He well and truly silenced his doubters by proving them wrong. So, whatever your dreams are kids, you go and chase them. They’re your dreams and there’s nothing too big or too small. Whether you want to open a café, climb Everest, fix cars or become Prime Minister … follow your heart and know I’ve always got your back.

Belper School Monster in the Village This is a snippet of Belper School student Herbie Gribble’s upcoming fantasy novel that he is in the midst of creating. In this extract, in the fantasy world, our protagonist finds himself lost in the forest, after wandering off before the harvest festival. Now he faces an unseen and unknown foe… Movement. In the bushes. Rustle. Rustle. Nothing. And then the smell hit Dig, like a rotten carcass left out in the summer sun, it invaded his nostrils. He stumbled back away from it, trying to get as far as possible until he fell over a log and landed on his back. He lay there, in the dark, he knew not for how long, but as his terror began to slowly eek away, he became acutely aware of the lack of noise. The village lay silent in the distance, most of the lights out or dimmed and whatever had been hunting him seemed to have left. Rising to his feet, he made his way through the trees towards the last glimmering lights. As he began to draw near, he smelt the same rotten smell but magnified as though it lay upon the whole village. The sky was still black and there was miasma in the air. The stars still shone down but the stench of death lay heavy on the air. Reaching the edge of the treeline he stopped dead in his tracks, the houses of the village were in a state of decay, wood was rotting, and stone walls were falling apart in a state of disuse. There was not a sound to be heard apart from that of a building collapsing in the distance as its supports gave way. Of the villagers there were no signs and the lights Dig had seen seemed to have long since gone out.

Walking slowly past the decaying houses Dig found himself in the centre of the village. Strewn about the ground next to one of the still smouldering bonfires were bones. The bleached skulls of the men and women he had known stared up at him as he stood there stupefied. There was no flesh left clinging to their bones and they were not charred by flame. Dig then remembered, of the stories he heard in the inn that told of horrors that were once men. Horrors that feasted on people’s flesh and wore decay about them like a cloak. He looked away and turned to the looming cliff and there, almost indistinguishable stood a monster. It was faceless and stood like a person but yet was horribly different from one. The same low groan-that-was-a-screech reverberated off the cliff wall. It had no face, no sign of there ever being eyes or a nose however a mouth cut across its face like a scar. Surrounded by crimson blood and filled with needle teeth. He blinked and it had gone, the groan-that-was-a-screech cut short. Dig stood where he was for the rest of the night, expecting at any minute a cold, hard hand against his throat. It never did come. When the golden eye bathed the land in light the next day, he finally overcame his paralysis. Looking around the village Dig found nothing he could use, if not for the embers in the fires it would seem as if the village had been abandoned decades ago. As the eye reached its zenith Dig decided there was nothing left there for him. He could act upon his dreams of seeing the world, although the reason of his departure was not as he imagined it would be. Setting his back towards the granite wall he left his village for good, knowing that its people now lived only in him and in the heavens with the Dragons. By Herbie Gribble, Year 11

Parenting Teaching Kids to Be Savvy Savers Most of us have made mistakes with money at some point. Help your children to avoid the same financial pitfalls by giving them the knowledge and skills to build on in the future. Teach them the value of money Rather than buying your children sweets each week, give them pocket money, some of which they can use to buy sweets and some of which they can save for a bigger treat. It’s good for children to earn at least part of their pocket money by doing chores. They’ll learn that money doesn’t come for nothing and be less likely to waste it. To make life easier, you could use an app and debit card like RoosterMoney or Go Henry, which were created to help children get to grips with their finances and earn money through chores. Help them to budget Encourage children to save up for something they really want rather than just waiting for Christmas or their birthday. You could start by explaining how much they’d need to save each week to achieve their goal. Younger children tend to need quicker results, so start with a small goal that can be achieved in a few weeks rather than months. Give them responsibility Part of appreciating the value of money is learning through mistakes. It’s tempting to step in and stop your child from spending their pocket money on things that you know they will quickly discard. Offer advice but let them make their own decisions on low-value

items. They may well then think twice next time they want to buy a blind bag or an expensive Tshirt. When older children are ready, you could give them more responsibility for budgeting for the things they need by giving them an allowance for clothes, school dinners, travel expenses, toiletries, days out and so on, and helping them to work out a monthly budget. Again, they can earn more through chores if they want to save up for high-value items. Discuss money Don’t be afraid to talk about money with your children. You could share how much you’re setting aside each month for next year’s holiday for example, and talk about your own experiences with money. You can also help your child to see that, while it’s good to shop around for the best price, cheap doesn’t always mean best value. However, try not to make your child worried about family finances. It’s fine to talk about not being able to afford something or how you’re saving up for a big purchase, but you don’t want your child to lose sleep worrying that you won’t be able to pay the bills. Local History Belper People of the Past

Fanny Finnerty Hall 1866 - 1909 If you happen to go for a stroll in Belper Cemetery, the gravestone of Fanny Hall can hardly escape your notice. This impressive memorial stands in the central area opposite the funeral chapels and commemorates Fanny, her husband Albert and their son Henry. Fanny Finnerty spent her life among travelling show people. She was born in Birmingham in 1866 and her father was a confectioner and a showman. At 5 years old she was with her family in Chesterfield lodgings and the next information I could find was when Fanny married Albert Hall at Duffield Church in December 1888, as shown on their marriage record.

Like her father, her new husband was described as a confectioner whose own father Henry was the landlord of The Grapes, but the Halls were also showmen and very much involved in the funfairs which travelled round the Midlands. In 1891, after their first child Nelly was born, the family were in a caravan in Derby where Albert ran a rifle shooting saloon. The Hall family partly owned the fairground site at Derby’s Morledge where Fanny and Albert lived with other travelling showmen. Co-owners of the site were the Proctors (of Belper Fair fame) and the two families were close and connected by marriage. 1901 finds Fanny and Albert living in a caravan at West Bars, Chesterfield and by now they had three children Nelly, Henry and Ernest. Albert was again running a rifle saloon. Fanny would have been extremely busy helping her husband in the fairground business, most likely keeping accounts and organising their lives on the move as well as bringing up their three children.

Tragically their son Henry died at the age of 16. On the grave stone he is described as “a jewel lent to us”. Fanny died a year later at the age of 43, her life was all too short and life-expectancy at that time was not high, but who knows? She might have died of a broken heart after losing Henry. By 1911 Albert had settled down in Belper with his two remaining children as landlord of the Nag’s Head on High Pavement, following in the footsteps of his publican father. If the family wanted to give Fanny and Albert a splendid memorial, they achieved their aim.

It stands close to the path, my attention caught by its light-coloured stone and her name in full view. There must be many women like her who lie in unvisited graves and I don’t want her to be completely forgotten for who, as a child, has not enjoyed a visit to the fair? Next to Fanny’s grave are other members of the Hall family who have been fairground people for hundreds of years. Today Halls are still in Derbyshire with the Merry Go Round café, amusements, fish and chips, coffee, donuts and sweet shop in Matlock Bath. Belper is inextricably linked to the fair and if anyone wants to know more about this aspect of our history there will be a new book in the autumn. I am looking forward to “Belper’s Fairground Heritage” by Neil Calladine who is our town’s By Viv Scott own local historian of fairs and show people.

2019 brought a new story to life: The One Meant to Last, a romance touching on reincarnation, set in England, Vietnam, America, and Spain. A year later I wrote Owls on the Bonnet, a different kind of romance for me concerning dementia. My stories are all fiction, but this was one I felt I needed to write. My mother had died a year before I began writing it and she had dementia, an awful illness that takes a person away but leaves their body behind. I feel the act of writing that book was very cathartic for me and something I had to do.

Looking for the love that seems to have evaded her life, Sarah-Jane gets friendly with local farmer’s son, Terry Miller. But fate is not kind and Sarah-Jane finds herself looking after her brothers, and fighting to keep them all together when the local bobby takes an interest and the authorities get involved. Sarah-Jane loses the battle and finds herself alone, her only real friend the local wise woman who lives close by. When she thinks things can’t get any worse, Sarah-Jane finds herself pregnant, and the father of her baby is going to marry someone else. All alone in the darkness of night, she gives birth to a daughter, but is illprepared. In desperation she makes a decision, little knowing how it will change her life. But everything has its price and Sarah-Jane finds herself in a position where she has to keep one very big secret, or lose everything. Janet Scaife Bio. In 1991 I won The Romantic Novelists’ Association New Writer of the Year Award with my first novel. That was the beginning. I had always wanted to write but had never felt I would be able to do it. Then one day I told myself, if you don’t try, you will never know. I went to Woolworths at the bottom of King Street in Belper and bought the cheapest typewriter I could find, then a pack of paper from Frearson’s. Then I went home and began writing. Those first few pages were done over and over again, and I was soon returning to Frearson’s

for more paper. But I soon got into the habit of getting one page to run on to another and far less got ripped up. After winning the award my career took off and I wrote several sagas for Transworld under their imprint Corgi books, all set locally in Derbyshire. But unfortunately, ill health began to get in the way. Arthritis had affected my spine and sitting for long periods had, quite literally, become a pain in the backside. My writing began to suffer and I gave up. Several years, and medical procedures later, I began to think about having another go. If James Bond can say ‘Never say Never’, so can a 68-year-old gran who has remained at age 31 inside her head. She is 72 now, but that is only a number and the one that matters is still the one inside her head. It was 2017 when I published what I call my first second chance book, Aphrodite’s Child, a romantic saga set in Cyprus. The follow-on, Casanova’s, was published in 2018.

This year my fifth ‘second chance’ book has been published: SarahJane’s Secret. For this I have returned to the family saga set locally in Milford in the 1950s. I was born in Milford and lived there until I married, except for a couple of years between ages 6-8 spent in Allestree, where I now live. The story begins in 1950, a decade I remember well. I chose the cottages that once stood on Swainsley to set the beginning of the story, where my childhood friend Pat lived. They pulled the cottages down somewhere around 1963. I have lived in Allestree for the last 32 years now, in the house where I lived when my first book got published and where I am still writing, and will continue to do so, hopefully, for some time to come. A customer changed her broadband account to BT. The first email she received was from ‘BT’ indicating an issue with her payment details and a link to her ‘account’. It looked very convincing. As we knew there was nothing wrong with the payment, it alerted us this was a phishing email. The sender’s address looked unusual too. It could have been a very different ending. Do not click on a link unless you know you have instigated it, better still, log into your account in the usual way online, and not via a link. The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Pauline Ewins of Belper. Pauline was nominated by Jessie Mayes and the team at Leaders in Belper: “We would like to nominate ‘our lovely Pauline’, who lives near our office. We worked with Pauline briefly a few years ago and ever since she has popped into branch with treats (bless her soul). She calls in every week with cakes, bakes and sweet treats. She also gave our branch manager a beautiful drawing which he was truly touched by. When we had a power cut, she delivered homemade sandwiches as she was worried staff would go hungry and, during lockdown, she often checked on us to see if we needed anything (even if we said ‘We’re ok, thank you’ she’d still bring us some shortbread or chocolates!). The lady is a true treasure, such a kind-hearted soul and we would love to say thank you for her continued kindness throughout the years.” Jessie Mayes and the team at Leaders Nominate someone to receive the next bouquet.
