Gauteng government outline plans to create 600 000 jobs by 2019
THE Gauteng government will outline plans to create 600 000 new jobs by 2019 and to increase spending on township manufactured products and services. Economic Development MEC Lebogang Maile will outline this when he presents his department’s budget vote in the Legislature in Johannesburg on Monday. As South Africa’s industrial and economic hub Gauteng has not escaped from the country’s cur-
will be about R42 million by 2019 that we are going to invest as provincial government. The question we need to ask ourselves is what the value of the investment we make is and how many jobs are we creating. And as I say we need about 600-thousand jobs to keep up.” He says through the newly adopted Provincial Economic Development Plan they intend not only to save jobs but also deal with the bottle necks in the manufacturing and services sector such as retail and call centres. Maile says they are also attending to challenges facing local businesses in townships such as space for working and ensuring their products access local and African markets. “Nigeria with the premier, we’ve been to East Africa, will be consolidating SADC, been to Namibia and message is we need to focus on intra-Africa trade. We need to start trading together. “Our intra-Africa trade is sitting at between 12 and 14% that’s too little. Our economies are still highly dependent on other continents when we have about a billion people on our continent.” Working with the private sector Maile says they will train about a 150 black industrialists. These individuals will be mentored to run their own firms to manufacture equipment used in the mining, agriculture and construction sector. Next week Maile will report back on the work done to revitalise the township businesses. CITY POWER CUSTOMERS REMINDED OF AMNESTY DEADLINE
MMC calls on the poor to register for ESP benefits THE City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, has called on all the city’s indigent residents to register or re-register for the recently launched, much improved and more accessible Extended Social Package (ESP). The City is on a drive to update its indigent register and is calling on all eligible individuals or vulnerable citizens – including the unemployed, the elderly and people with disabilities – to register or re-register to enjoy the ESP’s basket of benefits. The benefits include water, electricity, refuse removal and property rates rebates. The move is in line with the City’s pro-poor agenda being spearheaded by the Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba, who addressed the importance of the ESP in fighting poverty during his State of the City Address in May. Speaking during an Open Day at the Roodepoort City Hall in Region C on Thursday June 22, MMC Phalatse encouraged indigent residents to attend the citywide workshops so they could be better informed about the ESP. “Open days and regional community workshops will take place at [a number of] venues for new

Limpopo Tourism Agency all out to attract tourist
LIMPOPO Tourism Agency (LTA) is pulling all stops in making sure that the province become the country’s tourism destination. NAKAMPE LEKWADU was there to write and take the pictures LTA made their message clear during their recent Media Colloquium which was held at Euphoria Golf and Lifestyle Estate in Modimolle outside the province’s capital, Polokwane. Andrew “Druza” Dipela, the LTA chairman didn’t mince his words when speaking about the province’s strategic position and cultural diversity which alone makes it a must visit. “As the province, we have a number of factors that can any given time give us an advantage of redirecting the money-spending tourists into our province. This is the only province in the country that boast of a rich culture, heritage and arts from its own local diversity cultures such as the Tsongas, Pedis and the Vendas. More advantage to us as the province is that we are also the only province in the entire SADEC region that is surrounded by three countries such as Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe,” said Dipela. Dipela pointed out that it is not a secret that the province is doing well as in terms of attracting thousands of visitors over certain long weekends, however that does not mean anything as most of them are not spending money as it is supposed to be as most of them are either coming back home for holidays from their work places while some are coming for church services at the Zion Christian Church in Moria “The current statistics of visitors in our province shows that most of them are the so called VFP, abbreviation for the Visiting Friends and Politics
who are mostly visiting for things such as funerals, weddings and church purposes and on the process they don’t spend as we expect them,” explained Dipela. Dipela’ sentiments were echoed by the LTA’s interim CEO, Thapelo Kotsedi, saying: “The province of Limpopo has everything that most tourists need. In terms of segmentation, Limpopo boasts of Mega Conversation, Golf & Gaming, Family & Recreation, Hunting & Safari and many more. We are even more the luckiest province to be boasting of Waterberg region as the most richly game farming area in the entire Southern Hemisphere.” As LTA, continued Kotsedi: “We are also encouraging the domestic tourism, and that via partnering with the department of education and local municipalities. As part of our intervention, as LTA we are also going to make sure we Identify and Promote some Tourism Attractions while at the same time promoting the Rural/Township Tourism.”

The World Cup was a learning curve for SA Wheelchair Basketball Team
SOUTH African Under-23 men’s wheelchair basketball head coach, Allen Mtatase says his team, Amawheelies learned a lot from this year’s Men’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship experience, despite disappointing results. Playing in the world tournament against eventual Champions Great Britain, Germany, Japan, USA and France, the team suffered defeats in their first-round outings of International Wheelchair Basketball. But the national team coach insists that the learnings Amawheelies have taken on and off the court, during the tournament held in Canada, will stand them in good stead for the future. Mtatase said: “It has been a good opportunity to measure our progress and face teams that we do not play against normally and this can only make us better and assess where we are as a team and where we aim to be. “Obviously, the boys will be disappointed but will learn from the experience and for sure it has been
good to participate in the competition and we are grateful to our sponsors Sasol for enabling us to get here and compete.” Nozipho Mbatha, Group Brand Marketing Manager at Sasol mentioned the great strides the team has made since the start of the championship. “I am confident that the team will bounce back from this,” says Mbatha. “Throughout their championship, you could see the team growing in confidence and learning from their opponents. The most important thing now for this team is settle back home and use the learnings from the World Championship to grow into a formidable team. As the only African representative at the World Championships Amawheelies finished in position 12 from the competing teams and will be holding their heads up as they go back to their respective teams to get down to work. Mbatha adds: “We at Sasol are delighted that the team got to this competition, most importantly
Limpopo still to be represented by two clubs in the elite league FOOTBALL fanatics in the province of Limpopo have a reason to smile as they will be still represented by two clubs in the Absa Premiership, WRITES SEKABA MAAKE. This after Baroka FC managed to overcome fellow Limpopo side, Black Leopards and Stellenbosch FC in the crucial Promotional Play-Offs to retain their elite league status. Bakgaga as the Ga-Mphahlele based-side are fondly known found themselves participating in the energy draining three-clubs play-offs after their poor performance that saw them finished 15th position on the log. Baroka’s road to retain their status was however not a smooth one after they suffered some early
nightmares when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Stellenbosch away in Cape Town but only to regroup in their next match when they beat crosstown neighbours, Black Leopards 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. The Kgoloke Thobejane’s mentored side went on to beat Stellenbosch 2-0 at the same Polokwane venue before they were held to a goalless draw away to Leopards in their last play-offs match. Sad news however is that the province has lost one of its club in the National First Division, Magesi FC who did not survive the competition in their maiden season. More sad even was that Dolphin FC who were expected to perform and earn promotion to the NFD via the recent ABC
that through our partnership with WBSA – we were able to afford people with disabilities with opportunities such as these ones to compete not only in the African continent, but also in the international stage.” Despite the setbacks, team captain Musa Dlamini saw value in participating in this tournament. “If we want to be better, it helps to play better teams and that’s what we took from these championships,” says Dlamini. “As a team, we got a chance to see how other teams play and learn from watching and playing against them. This whole experience has helped us a great deal and it is now up to us to showcase what we have learnt as we go back to our teams back home.” Team Great Britain were the eventual winners after defeating Turkey at the 2017 World Under-23 Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Championship. Australia secured a place on the podium by a victory against Japan.
Motsepe League national play-offs which took place in East London, Eastern Cape did not live up to expectations. Black Leopards remain the only club that will be representing Limpopo in the NFD next season.

Baxter who has since been replaced by former Cape Town City coach, Eric Tinkler leaves United after not so bad season after having led the club to a 5th position finish and winning the Nedbank Cup was a cherry on top of a successful season. As for Pirates, 2016/17 season was their worse season which they would love to quickly forget, even worse after they failed to qualify for the top 8 after their 11th position finish on the log.

Against an old saying that goes: “Lightning can’t struck twice at the same place.” This final match,
was a replica of what happened in Limpopo’s capital, Polokwane at the Peter Mokaba Stadium when United beat the same Pirates in the Ke Yona Cup with the Baxter as the same coach. This is Baxter’s third time to win the Nedbank Cup after having won the competition while he was still with Kaizer Chiefs in 2008. Since his appointment as Bafana Bafana coach, Baxter has guided the team to their first ever victory over Nigeria in an official match.
