PSL in full support of Sundowns

THE Premier Soccer Leagues has thrown its weight behind African club champions, Mamelodi Sundowns who has since departed for Japan to join other continental club champions in the FIFA Club World Cup. The Brazilians are the first South African side to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup. They will play their first match this week against the winner of the match between Japanese J-League winners, Kashima Antlers and Auckland City. The League has joined the rest of Africa in wishing the South African domestic champions luck in Japan. PSL acting Chief Executive, Mato

Madlala said: “There is lot of significance in the journey Mamelodi Sundowns is embarking on. It is a special moment for Southern Africa and of course our League. The participation in the FIFA Club World Cup will undoubtedly bring South African domestic professional football in the spotlight. We trust that Mamelodi Sundowns will represent us well and replicate the form that saw them win the CAF Champions League trophy. On behalf of all the members of the National Soccer League, we would like to wish Mamelodi Sundowns the best of luck.”

Ajax rises

WHAT a difference a week makes for Ajax Cape Town, who have managed to lift themselves off the foot of the table with three wins in a row, the latest a scrappy 1-0 success at home to Lamontville Golden Arrows. New coach Stanley Menzo is understandably delighted, but wants a big finish to the year to move the club well away from the drop-zone going into the festive season break. And they will feel they have a chance to do that with matches to come at bottom side Highlands Park (December 14, away), Bloemfontein Celtic (December 17, away) and inconsistent Chippa United (December 21, home). “Results have sparked belief and confidence within the squad, we still have a long way to go, but things are looking good going forward. We need to extend our boundaries every week, create our next challenge, build and see where we end up. Ajax have managed back-to-back clean-sheets, including against African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, and Menzo says this stout defending is key to their future success.“As long as you keep clean sheets you will have a point at least, so if you create one or two chances a match and score one of those you are likely to get a good result. “It is very important that we keep things tight at the back like we have done in the past two games.”-Backpage TXT

Irvette van Zyl crowned at 10

ALTHOUGH Irvette van Zyl also had experienced a lot of disappointments this year, she could smile broadly last week when the winning cheque was presented to her for her achievements in the SPAR Grand Prix. It’s been the best of years, it’s been the worst of years for Irvette van Zyl. But the positive side of 2016 was foremost on Thursday night, when Van Zyl collected her third SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge Grand Prix award at a glittering ceremony at Emperor’s Palace. Van Zyl, who gave birth to her first child in September last year, had a great start to the year. She appeared unstoppable, winning every race she took part in. That included the SPAR women’s races in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban. She was selected to run the women’s marathon at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and eve-

rything seemed to be going swimmingly. But at the Olympic Games, her world came crashing around her ears. She developed a stress fracture in her foot, and had to withdraw from the marathon. “I was devastated. I didn’t finish the marathon at the London Olympics, because of an injury, and I wanted to make up for that by doing well in Rio. I am not normally prone to stress fractures, so this was a terrible blow. After going to two Olympic Games, I still can’t call myself an Olympian,” said Van Zyl. Van Zyl came back from Rio and started intensive rehabilitation, but she was unable to take part in the

Pretoria SPAR Challenge. “I was really worried – I was on top of the Grand Prix table, but I was worried that one of the Phalula twins could overtake me,” she said. Van Zyl eventually started training again a couple of weeks before the last and deciding Grand Prix in Johannesburg. On race day, she put any doubts about her fitness to rest, leading from start to finish and winning the race in record time to clinch victory in the Grand Prix by 21 points.

0th SPAR Grand Prix awards

It was her third Grand Prix victory, putting her on a par with Rene Kalmer, who also has three Grand Prix titles to her name. Van Zyl previously won in 2010 and 2011. Last year’s winner, Lebogang Phalula was second, with 79 points and Christine Kalmer was third, with 70. Van Zyl collected a cheque for R160 000, Phalula took home R53 000 and Kalmer R32 000. “I am so happy to have won the Grand Prix. It has helped to make up for

my huge disappointment at the Olympic Games. I want to thank SPAR for all they have done for road running. The Grand Prix has been going for 10 years now and it has added an extra dimension to the SPAR Challenge races. The thought of the very generous prize money is a great incentive on those cold winter mornings when you really don’t want to get out of bed and train,” said Van Zyl. SPAR Group Marketing Executive Mike Prentice said SPAR was very proud of the Grand Prix and the achievements of the top runners. “The SPAR Grand Prix, which allows

our top end athletes a chance to compete for year-end glory, complements each of the SPAR Women’s Challenge races and over the past 10 years has elevated the series to one of the biggest athletics brands in the country,” said Prentice.-recordeast.co.za Meanwhile Sports Focus and Spar are giving away Spar Shopping Vouchers worth R1 000 to six lucky readers. To stand a chance to win, answer the question below: Who won the 2016 Spar Women’s 10km Challenge Grand Prix? Send your answer, name and contact details to Sportsfocus@lenakacom.co.za The competition ends at mid-day on Friday, December 9 and winners will be notified telephonically on Saturday, December 10.

TOYOTA GAINS A NEW TOYOTA South Africa Motors (TSAM) last week announced that it will be the new headline sponsor to the WARRIOR race series at an adrenalin-packed launch, held at the Battlerush Adventure Centre in Bryanston, Johannesburg. Spanning eight events across five provinces annually, with up to 8000 participants per event, the WARRIOR series can rightly stake its claim as South Africa’s largest and most challenging obstacle course race. Obstacle Course Racing, dubbed OCR, requires competitors to overcome a variety of physical challenges whilst traversing rugged terrain on foot. The obstacles range from shoving inordinately heavy objects around a course to crawling through implausibly muddy trenches. The WARRIOR race burst on to the OCR scene in 2013, after which it quickly rose to become South Africa’s most highly anticipated obstacle course race, thanks to its boundarypushing and innovative human obstacles. “The upcoming Toyota WARRIOR series promises to be Toyota’s muddiest sports partnership to date,” says Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing for Toyota SA. “Toyota has always valued sport as a means of connecting with our audiences, and we’re amped to get our hands dirty (literally) by venturing in to the OCR sphere. The Toyota-WARRIOR partnership extends beyond the traditional corporate sponsorship, and will feature a number of experiential elements at upcoming WARRIOR races. A good

example of this is the fleet of new Toyota vehicles that will form part of the WARRIOR convoy responsible for erecting race obstacles on challenging off-road trails. Another highlight is that winners of the Black Ops Elite race will drive off in the latest model Toyota RAV4, to keep until the next race. In addition, Toyota owners attending events will be treated to prime parking spaces, and have an opportunity to test drive Toyota models “The toughness and ruggedness of the WARRIOR race terrain is the ideal playground for our off-road and crossover vehicles, providing the perfect showcase for models such

as our RAV4, Hilux and soon-to-bereleased C-HR crossover. But more than that, the WARRIOR race aims to promote active and healthy lifestyles, and encourages participants to overcome challenges that put mind, body and spirit to the test. It’s therefore the perfect fit for our brand as Toyota strives to enrich lives by moving people, no matter how challenging the circumstances,” adds Crompton. To supplement its WARRIOR race sponsorship, Toyota has further struck a unique vehicle sponsorship agreement with the KeyHealth Nevarest Team, which were identified as one of South Africa’s leading OCR

Over and above OCR, the team specialises in a variety of disciplines including mountain biking, canoeing, trail running, triathlon and duathlon events. In addition to donning Toyota-clad race kit at all upcoming adventure races, the sponsorship agreement has been structured in such a way that it enables young athletes to own and drive Toyota vehicles of their choice. Datsun Go+ panel van is idea

DATSUN has made its intentions to take the vibrant market by storm clear with the recent launching of its Panel Van, Datsun GO+ This stylish panel van is ideal for small business owners who are looking for a city runabout that is capable of moving anything from flowers, catering supplies, to a range of other small to medium sized parcels. A trip to Limpopo few days ago was received by admires with mixed feelings as most argued that this was

way too smart to be a panel van, more so because of its four-door design that resembles any sedan cars. Nevertheless, Datsun Go+ is ideal for young entrepreneurs as the car is suitable for both work and leisure. Driving across the province of Limpopo and certain portions of North West around Hammanskraal areas, its performance at both take-off and running was out of this world and it was not surprising to see some other road users frequently asking infor-

mation about the car, ranging from its retailed price to fuel consumption. Datsun Go+ offers a whopping loading capacity of 542 kilograms, and has a loading volume of 3.4m3. Easy access to loads is offered through the two rear doors on both sides, and the high opening rear hatch, for those quick deliveries and pick-ups. A solid partition separates the cargo area from the driving compartment. The divider is topped with a sturdy mesh grill, that ensures

Smith boost for Boks for Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup

IN what can be regarded as a massive coup for the Springboks, legendary former South African cricket captain Graeme Smith has agreed to join them for the Nelson Mandela Legacy Cup match against the Proteas in a player/coach capacity. The T20 match, which takes place at PPC Newlands in Cape Town on Thursday, is sponsored by Prepaid24.com, a strategic business partner of Blue Label Telecoms and an online retailer of its prepaid services. And to add to the festivities, Blitzbok captain Philip Snyman and his 15 counterparts from the participating teams in this weekend’s HSBC Cape Town Sevens will in attendance, with a couple of fun activities planned for the dinner break. Tickets to the Sevens will also be given away at the cricket Smith’s inclusion is the final piece in the Bok puzzle for this highly anticipated match – almost two years to the day since the rugby players beat their cricketing counterparts by five wickets at the Wanderers, thanks mainly to 62 runs by Victor Matfield and three wickets apiece by Damian De Allende and Willie le Roux.

Pat Lambie, who will captain the Boks on Thursday, said he will lean heavily on Smith’s experience against the high-flying Proteas. Smith captained the Proteas in 101 Tests and is the most successful Test captain in cricket history, with 50 victories. “We can’t wait for the challenge and although we know the Proteas will be confident going into this encounter, we can hopefully make a good contest of it,” said Lambie. “To have Graeme as part of our team is a massive boost and he will definitely play a key role for us with the bat and ball. His International T20 batting average is just shy of 32 and his off-breaks will come in very handy on the Newlands pitch. “Our technical analysts have been hard at work in the last few days to see if we can find any weaknesses in the Proteas’ armour, but that is easier said than done and we’ll just have to rely on our skills and experience on the day. “Many of our boys have not played since they left school, but we’re still aiming to upset the odds and make it an enjoyable day for all involved at arguably the prettiest cricket ground in the world.”

Blitzboks keen to continue Dubai form in Cape Town

SPRINGBOK Sevens captain, Philip Snyman, feels there is room for improvement and that even a better effort will be needed if they want to defend the HSBC Cape Town Sevens title from a number of strong challenges next weekend. The HSBC Cape Town Sevens will be played in the Cape Town Stadium on 10 and 11 December and after their solid performance in Dubai, where the Blitzboks won the Emirates Dubai Sevens title, Snyman feels they still need to improve in a number of areas. “We are far from the best we can be. We did well on the weekend and played a very good final against Fiji, but there are a number of areas we can improve on this week going into Cape Town.” It was Snyman’s first victory as captain of the team and he felt it was an important one for the squad. “It is always nice to have some continuity and confidence going into a tournament and we have some of that now. That is good, but we also know we can and must improve if we want some results this weekend.” Springbok Sevens playmaker and leading points’ scorer with 1144 points, Cecil Afrika, said the team members are keen to play in Cape Town. -www.sarugby.co.za
