Modernism is a philosophical movement that, along with cultural trends and changes, arose from wide-scale and far-reaching transformations in Western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the factors that shaped Modernism were the development of modern industrial societies and the rapid growth of cities The main style of modernism is form, follows, function. There were many modernist periods such as de stijl, Bauhaus, Futurism, Vorticism, Cubism, Surrealism and Dada. The modernist believed in designs that symbolised the 21st century.

Postmodernism is the term used to define a society which has evolved due to technological advances. As a result of this modernisation, society has been able to redefine the concept of arts by implementing a combination of artistic styles which collaborate the mixture of old and new architecture. In the late 20th-century style and concept in the arts, architecture, and criticism, which represents a departure from modernism and is characterized by the self-conscious use of earlier styles and conventions, a mixing of different artistic styles and media, and a general distrust of theories.

Typography is used in our everyday lives, from hand writing a letter to a shop sign board. I have looked into the typography used in my home town Burnley. Burnley is known for its cotton mills and old factories and buildings, so I have looked at buildings with typography engraved into the stone and the use of typefaces, point size and leading. I find it fascinating how the style of type has changed over the years from painted hand made sign boards to high tech digital printed sign boards with the simplest typefaces to get the message across. I have also looked at typography on vehicles, home windows and even on products, such as skips and building sites. I have come up with a concept to look into typography and see how I could re - create some existing examples of typography and still give a strong or clear message to the person reading the type. I have looked at range of type styles such as hand rendered type, shop fronts and even graffiti and the way they use typefaces and give it a twist of they own. I find my home town is a good place for this project as it has a range of different areas such as old type engraved into building or a old shop, to the new modern areas such as shop fronts to directional signage. As Burnley is the “Most Enterprising Area� in the UK, I feel they will be a lot of improvements not just in the town but the way people get the message across specially using typography.

For Earth Artefact I have decided to make a mobile App but on a iPad, The app will have all sorts of information on. It will include sound, videos and photos. It will go into detail about various topics and have sections covering everything that is going on at the moment on earth. It will help the user about our way of life. For the design side of this concept I designed a poster showing people the ipad that will be sent into space with a few photos of the page layouts of the App, I have designed the inner pages and the actual App.

TYPEFACE NOPQRSTUVWXYZ NOPQRSTUVWXYZ NOPQRSTUVWXYZ When producing a typeface, I looked into many different characters. I especially looked at the patterns and shapes of a letter and how they fit together as a group. I then produced this typeface. I really like the line quality and how
some lines over lap each other. I feel this typeface would work really well in lots of different settings such as on a signboard, posters and on other documents.
