Nottingham is one of the oldest cities in Britain which has antique urban areas a long history. In the middle ages, Nottingham was an important commercial and industrial city. Being the centre of the textile industry, famous for lace products. Nottingham is known as the hometown of lace.
At first, because consumer groups aim to be noble, the material used for lace was pure silk with only two colours, white and black. With the industrial revolution, the production of lace made by machines was gradually accepted by consumers. Good quality lace made in Nottingham is still the best choice for a niche customer. Nottingham is famous for decorative patterns and good designs. But due to the decline of Britain’s textile industry, the time for Nottingham as a global lace manufacturing and trading of centre has gone. The Lace Market, which is not far away from the Old Market Square in downtown was the trading centre. Even though the Lace of Nottingham trading Market exists no longer, the influence of lace is still there. In November 2011, artists designed a rubber template for Nottingham contemporary art center which is located in Nottingham county with printed Victorian decorative patterns highlighting the lace history of Nottingham. It shows the history of fashion.
During the same year, the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding lace was designed and produced in Nottingham. There are many small in-home handmade workshops producing this kind of emotional appeal which is full of interesting and complicated beautiful patterns. In Nottingham, even many places are named after lace, thus we can see the status of lace in people’s life. For most women, lace with beautiful decorative pattern is their love. These small beautiful lace shops on the street make them have the feeling that it is the happiest time to stay there forever.
