MA INTERNATIONAL FASHION BUSINESS

Year Book 2013 - 2014

The MA International Fashion Business is a taught course examining key sectors of the industry from a global perspective. A focus on management, marketing, and industry practice provides an understanding of this exciting and complex industry. The course includes a work placement opportunity. It is aimed at people with design or business related backgrounds who wish to become managers or entrepreneurs.

Course Leader: Alexandra Hanford

The MA International Fashion Business (MA IFB) recognises that there are people working within the industry or wishing to enter the industry, who have gaps in their knowledge and skills that would inhibit them acquiring new and more advanced skills to develop their career. You may be a student or working in the industry. You may have a design background and you wish to develop your commercial and strategic understanding or you may have a business background and wish to explore and develop your creative skills and understanding. A distinctive feature of the MA International Fashion Business is that it is designed to close the gap between an art and design MA and be a Business MSc. It will enable you to learn about all aspects of the international fashion industry; design process, manufacturing, sourcing, retail and promotion alongside management and creative subjects. The fashion industry is a complex blend of the creative and the commercial, The MA IFB teaches these subjects in an holistic and integrated manner so that the knowledge and skills you acquire reflect how they will be applied seamlessly within the industry. Another distinctive feature of the MA IFB is its application and reference to the industry and actual business practice. This will be achieved through a variety of activities including speakers from the industry, simulated work projects and reflection on work experience. For graduates with limited fashion industry experience there is an optional; 2 day x 10 week work placement at PG Cert stage with an industry partner in the region. You will have the option of progressing to the PG Dip or exiting with a title PG Cert Fashion Means Business. You will study alongside students from across the world with a variety of experiences and skills, this will enable you to build networks and learn within an international context. You will be taught by a broad range of specialist lecturers from the university and industry. There are International and UK study trips within the course and these are designed to enable you to see different parts of the industry at work and understand the variety of approaches to the same proposition that exist within the fashion industry.

ABOUT IFB

I studied Fashion Design in Beijing and I have been a Fashion Designer in a Womenswear company for four years. I found that all sectors of the fashion industry are interconnected and an excellent design is underpinned by a comprehensive understanding of all sectors. The previous experience of studies and works equipped me with basic knowledge in fashion design and fashion industry, and naturally placed me on the path to higher academic pursuits. I choose MA International Fashion Business in Nottingham Trent University because this major offers high quality education resources, a wide range of subjects as well as the industrial heritage and influential reputation of fashion in UK. During the design work, I have learned to use fur materials for Womenswear design meanwhile I have the opportunity to visit the Kopenhagen fur auction, fur farms and fur design studio in Denmark. I was intrigued by the uniqueness and the historical fashion of fur so that I continue to do further and systematic study of the fur industry and the fur fashion brand in my dissertation research. As the knowledge about fur I have achieved from fur fashion design to fur business, I hope I can specialise and play an important role in this particular field. Besides, through increasing advanced knowledge and experiences, I hope I will open a new professional stage, for the purpose of better qualifying for the all-round talent in fashion industry.

Chapter 2: Literature review 2.1 I n t r o d u c t i o n Literature review includes various concepts, models as well as the theories on brand loyalty, consumer behaviour and cultural perspectives that help to understand consumer behaviour. In addition, the past studies concerning subjects such as industry development, cultural perspectives, retail environment, sociological change and men’s purchasing behaviour have been reviewed critically to understand the difference between the western and western males in the use of cosmetics. Moreover, the social factors that influence the buying behaviour of men have been detailed. Hence literature review in general attempts to address the main goal of the study and address the various questions developed in the previous chapter. 2.2 Cultural Perspectives A number of factors derive the increasing change in consumer habits and men’s purchasing patterns such as internet, media exposure and the rising income globally. According to researcher, culture can have a great influence on the men’s buying behaviour and the cultural values also influence the consumer behaviour. Moreover, researcher presented evidence that ethnic groups have different cultures and values, hence they have different consumption patterns. This is because when consumers purchase a good, they do so to fulfil a certain need which is influenced significantly by their belief system and culture. Moreover, cultural environment impacts on how people behave, live and their actions. Cultural values differ across nations which explain why there are variations in the consumption of male cosmetics between countries. The cultural perspectives can be explained using the views of Hofstede based on dimensions such as power distance, uncertainty avoidance and individualism.

Hi, guys, I am Lily Mu, a girl from China. When I got to UK last year, I was totally attracted by the fresh air, blue sky and the most important thing, the freedom life attitude. I am so happy that I have a chance to enjoy one-year time here. Happiness is a journey, not a destination. I try to enjoy the good and the bad things happened to me during the year, and always keep it in heart of being with hopes. In my MA course, I meet difficulties, learn to deal with problems, and I do enjoy it. I think I do make a right decision to study in Nottingham Trent University. The time I spent with my classmates and my teachers brings me a best memory, and I really appreciate being one of the students of International Fashion Business. Also, I have to thank to my tutor, Alex Hanford, who always gives me patience, suggestions and courage in study and life, which are so important to me.

My name is Zhang He, my friends call me by my English name Bex. I come from southern parts of China, Hunan province, which is a nation with long history of culture. The name Hunan means ‘south of the lake’ and the province extends southwards from the vast Dongting Lake. From Zhangjiajie to Langshan, Hunan is blessed with world-class natural heritage. It’s also home to historical cities, cultural relics, colourful folklore and beautiful scenery, including Dongting Lake, Dongjiang Lake and Hengshan Mountain. My family consists of my father, my mother and myself. Before that, I studied BA (Hons) Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles at Nottingham Trent University. At present, I am a mater student at Nottingham Trent University and majoring in MA International Fashion Business. My main interest is fashion business, and I would like to work for an international fashion corporation after I graduate. I study English hard to help me fulfill my ambition. My hobbies are swimming, drawing and traveling. I have traveled a lot in China, Europe and I have visited the United States. I often watch travel programs on TV. I am interested in foreign cultures and fashion design. For those of us that choose art, it is not a career or a hobby, but a passion, a way of life. Meanwhile, I hope that I can establish mine own brands in the future.

My life is based around two passions: fashion & FASHION. Having been an avid follower and creator of fashion for several years, and moreover as a person who believes one’s career must also be one’s passion, it was perhaps almost inevitable that I would gravitate towards this fascinating industry in my professional life. Yet although there are many different areas of the fashion world within which one can seek to build a successful career, for some time now my sights have been set firmly on one specific area, namely fashion business. The art and craft of fashion has always captivated me, and just as I have dedicated much of my life to exploring the fashion world. Throughout MA international fashion business course, I loved the challenge of both of these different types of work, and have felt my theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to fashion business come on in leaps and bounds over the past year.
