BATAVIA PARK DISTRICT FUN GUIDE SPRING 2021

Page 1

Programs are subject to change due to COVID-19. Please visit bataviaparks.org for current information.

Dear Residents: While there isn’t a playbook for this pandemic, we know our community stays strong when we stay connected! We are here to serve you and your recreational needs indefinitely.

A Message from Our Executive Director

At this time, pending any executive orders from the Governor, we are planning to open the Hall Quarry Beach this spring! We will be celebrating 100+ years of splashing good times! The season begins May 29 and will look a lot different than in years past (page 53). Due to the pandemic, we are taking extraordinary safety measures and must limit the number of people at the beach during any given time. Residents will have first priority for reserving designated time slots for daily admission. As a result, we will not be offering season passes this year; therefore Aloha Week will go on hiatus until next year. Sign up for one of our fitness classes now (pages 21-23) so you’ll be in swimsuit shape when temperatures rise! From virtual programming and small-group classes to enhanced cleaning and safety measures, we are working around the clock to modify our operations and programming to comply with the Kane County Health Department and Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines. I am proud of my team that is working diligently to make sure the infrastructure of our parks, facilities, and programs remain safe so we can provide you with the opportunity to recreate during the pandemic. Parents who need daytime supervision for their child during the remote learning school days can turn to our Bulldog Crimson/Gold Camp for a structured recreational enrichment program. This camp is designed for ages Kindergarten through 6th grade from 7:30 am – 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday (page 17). We are offering beginners pickleball and Kubb lessons for adults (page 30) and a host of different classes like chess, magic, and performing arts classes for children. One of our fastest growing youth sports programs is Girls Softball designed for 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U teams (page 29). We invite you to stay active and connected with us by visiting the Batavia Virtual Recreation Center at bataviaparks.org. On the east side of town, Hamlet Park will be receiving a facelift. Residents voted for their choice of playground equipment and selected one that features multiple climbing structures and a small scale merry-go-round that will provide countless hours of fun. Be positive, test negative!

Allison Niemela, CPRP Executive Director

Hall Quarry Beach 52 | Spring 2021

Hall Quarry Beach is an award-winning facility of the Batavia Park District!

Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former stone quarry now owned by the Batavia Park District. It has been used as a swimming facility since 1920. The story began over 150 years ago in 1842, when a limestone quarry was opened on the west end of town and Batavia received the name “Rock City.” By 1860, nine quarries were in operation, and one of these quarries sat on an acre of property along the Fox River. More than 150 men mined limestone from the quarry until it was so deep and wide that water began permeating onto the floor of the site. Soon enough, six ponds were formed that were fondly known as ‘old swimming holes.’ By 1920, the Quarry was purchased by Frederick Beach. Beach donated the quarry to the Batavia Township, and they converted the six ponds into one swimming area. This area was named the Frederick H. Beach Park and Pool. Fast forward to 1969, when the Batavia Park District formed and the property was then transferred to the Park District and later renamed. Today Hall Quarry Beach features a sand bottom swimming area covering 60,000 square feet which includes islands, slides, and a diving area. There is a playground and plenty of picnic tables as well. Come visit the beach that Batavia built!.

T

he rich history of the city’s past is housed in the Batavia Depot Museum, which is a cooperative effort between the Batavia Park District and the Batavia Historical Society. The museum is in a restored Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy railroad station, which was built in 1854 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. There are two floors of exhibits on local and state history to explore, as well as a 1907 caboose! The Gustafson Research Center, in the lower level of the Depot Museum, houses the Batavia Historical Society’s archives. Researchers have access to Kane County court records, Tri-City directories, cemetery records, obituary indexes, local church records, probate and court records, historical books, photograph files, local business catalogs, and more. For additional information on the Museum and its collections, check out the Batavia Historical Society web page at www.bataviahistoricalsociety.org.

Spring & Summer Exhibit March 1 – August 1 Heart and Hustle: Batavia Sport Heroes Come out and root for our hometown team! This exhibit showcases Batavia athletes, coaches, and fans at the center of the action. Exhibit highlights include the careers of Batavia natives such as Ken Anderson, quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals from 1971-1986 and coach for the 2009 Super Bowl XLIII champion Pittsburgh Steelers; Corey Williams who played professional basketball for 12 years in Luxembourg, Switzerland and Belgium and now works for ESPN as a men’s college basketball analyst; and Sharron Moran who toured with the LGPA from 1967-1977 and currently gives lessons at the Bird Golf Academy in Palm Springs, California.

Exhibit Opening Reception Join Depot staff for a special viewing of Heart and Hustle: Batavia Sport Heroes on Friday, March 5 from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Depot Museum.

Cup Check Please: A Scholarly Talk on a “Jocular” Subject It turns out that the athletic supporter was actually invented in Chicago in 1874 by C. F. Bennett. Ellie Carlson, a Chicagoan tried and true and manager of The Chicago Salmon Vintage Base Ball team, will explore and illustrate the changes and some of the more unusual versions of this athletic wear that seem nearly insane to modern sentiments. There is positively no modeling of jock straps by anyone during this presentation.

policies

• All refunds will be issued in the form of a check when a refund application is approved before the class starts. Checks are processed by the Batavia Park District front office bi-monthly and sent via mail.

Non-Resident Fee Policy The Batavia Park District residents make a significant contribution to the operation of the park district via property taxes. The boundaries were established with the formation of the park district in 1969. A copy of a map showing the park district boundaries is printed in the brochure and available at the park district office. Persons living outside the park district boundaries may be required to pay an additional fee to register for programs.

Electronic Signature Readers: Electronic signature readers have been installed, which will eliminate the need for you to complete a paper form every time you register. The electronic reader will capture your signature and confirm that you’ve agreed to the liability waiver and release of all claims. Signatures will stay on file for 12 months, and after that time you will simply stop in to sign the waiver again. If you are a regular phone-in customer, we will need to capture your signature in person in order for you to do subsequent registrations by phone. Online registration will not be affected by this new procedure.

WAIVER & RELEASE

batavia park district waiver and release of all claims Important Information The Batavia Park District (the “Park District”) is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participant’s safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for the program/activity must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in any activities. You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or adequately skilled for recreational activities. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

Warning of Risk Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity. Depending on the particular activity, certain risks and dangers may exist due to inclement weather, slips and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, lack of safety equipment, inadequate or defective equipment, failure in supervision and instruction or officiating, and premises defects. It is impossible for the Park District to guarantee absolute safety.

Waiver and Release of All Claims and Assumption of Risk Please read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and participating in the Program(s), you will be expressly assuming the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all claims for injuries, damages or loss which you or your minor child/ward might sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with and associated with the program(s)/activity(ies) (including transportation services, when provided). I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risk of physical injury to participants in the program(s)/activity(ies), and I voluntarily agree to assume the full risk of any injuries, damages or loss, regardless of severity that my minor child/ward or I may sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with or associated with the program(s)/activity(ies). I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in this program/activity against the Park District, including its official, agents, volunteers and employees (hereinafter collectively referred as “Parties”). I do hereby fully release and forever discharge the parties from any and all claims for injuries, damages, or loss that my minor child/ward or I may have or which may accrue to me to my minor child/ ward in any way associated with the programs(s)/ activity(ies). I have read and fully understand the above important information, warning of risk, assumption of risk and waiver and release of all claims. If registering on-line or via fax, my on-line or facsimile signature shall substitute for and have the same legal effect as the original for signature. I understand that my child/ward or I may be photographed or videotaped while participating in a Park District program. I give permission for photos and video images of my child/ward or me to be used to promote the Park District’s recreation programs. Such photos and video images remain the property of the Park District.

TRI-CITIES SOCCER TEAM

COMMUNITY

SUCCESS

The Tri-Cities Soccer Association (TCSA) was founded in 1977 to provide a fun and healthy environment for area youth, from 4-18 years old, to play soccer. Today, it has grown to be one of the largest independent youth soccer organizations in Northern Illinois with great support from the local park districts. We offer families three levels of participation: ReCReATionAl, ClASSiC and PRemieR. Get started in early childhood by joining our Hand in Hand program, TCSA’s pre-school recreational program for 4-5 year old participants. RECREaTiOnaL team play begins in our U6 division (kindergarten) where small sided games ensure a positive learning experience and lots of time with the ball.

For more information on TCSA’s offerings, please visit our website at www.tcsa.net, or call 630.377.1101.
