Thoughts from the President by Jeremiah Malone
I
hope all is well in the New Year! We are already off to a fast start in 2021! I know I am ready personally for the world to have a little more normal pace. Covid-19 has affected us all here in the Tennessee Hereford Association. I know it has been hard on our senior members, but hopefully the end is near with a New Vaccine! 2020 has had its challenges! However, we are now stronger as an Association and a Nation at the end. 2020 Hereford sales were extraordinarily strong across the State and Nationally as well. I feel like that is a big positive heading into 2021. We hope that strong pace keeps up this spring and we are all able to get out to the THA Agribition Sale. We are so thankful that Wilson County has continued its support of all agriculture events at their facility. Tommy and Bobby tell me the offering is very strong and this could be one of our best sales to date. Only time will tell but let us all keep praying for the cattle industry and our Nation to hold strong. I know this will probably be my last letter to you as President of the THA. I want to thank our board for having faith in me to take on this role! I would like to thank all of you for your support as well! It has truly been an honor to serve in this role. I would like to personally thank Kay Coley and Glenda Rickman for keep the well-oiled machine working! Also, Kathryn Ingram for her hard work keeping this wonderful newsletter
going and profitable! Many associations would love to do what we do without losing money! The THA Family has been such a blessing to Candace and I, and we will never forget the kindness Y’all have given us!!

Editor’s Point of View by Kathryn Ingram
Covid 19 is still providing challenges during 2021. Events are being modified and/or canceled as we roll into the new year. Unfortunately, Covid has led to the postponement of our THA Annual Meeting. The board decided to have a mail-in ballot election for directors and have a meeting later on in the year. However, the Tennessee Hereford Agribition sale is still on. We may not be able to gather in fellowship and have a meal, but we can still have a cattle sale! We all have people that make us smile when you hear their voice. Billy Ashe is one of the people that will always bring a smile to my face and make my day a little brighter. Billy is a fountain of knowledge about the Hereford industry, I think many of you will enjoy the feature article about Billy and the development of Ashewood Farm. Tennessee has been fortunate to be well represented on the National AHA Board and the Junior board the last few years. We are now excited to have a Tennessean on the National Hereford Women (NHW) Board as well. I was able to have a Q&A session with Sally Wingler, a newly elected NHW Board member, to find out more about her responsibilities and the process of running for the NHW Board. The whole point of the cattle business is beef. Tennessee is continuing to make strides to put Hereford beef in the spotlight and make the Hereford industry more profitable for local pro-
ducers. The Tennessee Hereford Marketing Program had another successful sale with above-average prices last Fall. Johnny Woolfolk shared a report with all of the details. Competitive feeder calf prices increase the marketability of seedstock to the commercial producer. The board also decided to move forward with plans to have the 2021-2022 Directory in the August 2021 THA Newsletter. This edition will feature an expanded mailout. More information will be available in our April THA Newsletter. I want to thank everyone for your support during my six years on the THA Board of Directors. I will continue as the newsletter editor, but it is time to bring some fresh ideas and faces to the board.

Hereford Women of Tennessee Update by Joyce Ashe, President
C
ovid 19 took us all by surprise this last year. I hope that all have stayed safe and well. Because of the many cancellations, etc. We did not get to see each other as often as we wanted. Thanks to email and text we were able to perform some important jobs. We were able to sponsor Class 20, Junior Yearling Heifer, at the Tennessee Junior Show. Russ Woolfolk was the winner of this class.

Four very capable youth applied for the Hereford Women of Tennessee scholarship. We wish we had money to award everyone a scholarship. With much work on the part of our scholarship committee, Elizabeth Brasher of Decaturville, Tennessee was awarded the $500 scholarship. We did not have any applicants for Tennessee Queen this year. We would like to encourage the Juniors to apply to the Tennessee Queen and the scholarship. It is important that the mothers of these Juniors join the Hereford Women of Tennessee. The Hereford Women of Tennessee are proud to support the Tennessee Hereford Juniors. We are looking forward to a normal new year. Stay safe!

History, Economics, and Wisdom
—A conversation with AHA Hall of Fame Inductee Billy Ashe By Kathryn Ingram
The Ashe family: pictured (l to r) Will David and Patti (Ashe) Ashe, and Stratton Coleman, Billy and Joyce Ashe, April and Wes Ashe
B
illy Ashe, of Selmer, Tennessee, was inducted into the Hereford Hall of Fame at the American Hereford Association annual meeting in Kansas City, Missouri last October. This honor is bestowed on breeders who have made significant contributions to the promotion and advancement of the Hereford industry. Billy currently owns and operates Ashewood Farms in West Tennessee. His parents W.C. and Addillia Ashe started the farm with Polled Herefords in the 1950s. Billy returned to the farm after graduating from Oklahoma State University and serving in the Korean War. Billy is married to Joyce Ashe and has two children, Wes Ashe and Patti Ashe Coleman. Wes has joined his father in operating Ashewood Farms, where their focus is producing functional and genetically superior Hereford and Angus cattle. Billy contributes his desire to raise Herefords to many experiences and people from his youth. He thinks he chose Herefords because they were the breed he was familiar with and had an affinity for the purebred industry. Billy grew up around several prominent Hereford herds in West Tennessee. He mentioned that Troy Hair (Uncle of current THA Secretary Glenda Rickman) was a strong influence. He worked at Circle M Ranch after graduating high school and at Hull Dobbs Ranch in Walls, Mississippi, and Ft. Worth, Texas. Billy also gained a lot of exposure to many large-scale cattle operations in the southwest during his time at OSU. Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Winter 2021 • 12
Billy knew they had to have a competitive product with top genetics to attract customers when starting the herd. He purchased the best females he could afford and took advantage of new technology. Artificial insemination was in its infancy at the time Ashewood Farms was developing its new herd. His connections with the Hull Dobbs Ranch allowed him to get semen from top-end Hereford bulls. He believes this played a large part in “getting off to a relatively good start”. In the 1970s and 1980s, the show ring dominated the industry. Billy exhibited cattle at shows throughout West Tennessee and the southeast region. He used these shows to make contacts and develop a clientele. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he transferred emphasis to data-based information instead of just the top winning show bulls. Billy says his priorities changed from “the bull of the month club” to researching potential sires based on meaningful data. He puts a great deal of emphasis on bulls with high accuracies. He believes data provided by the National Reference Sire Program is one of the most useful tools a breeder can rely on. This population test helps him select bulls to improve carcass traits and calving ease in his herd. Billy feels his greatest challenge was carving out market demand for the farm. There were 2,700 breeders in the region, according to then AHA field man Gary Nichols, when Billy started his herd. It was a challenge for a family of modest means to compete in a crowded field. Eventually, the local sale barns recognized the quality of their feeder calves. The sale barn’s
manager recommended Ashewood bulls to local commercial cattlemen. This helped establish a commercial bull market for the farm. Billy Ashe has accomplished much in the cattle industry. He has had success on the farm, in the show ring, and in serving as a leader for local, state, and national associations. One of his most treasured awards was the 2018 John Bartee Distinguished Service Award from the Tennessee Cattlemen Association. Billy said John Bartee was a great friend, making this award special. In 1963, while still in his 20s, Billy was named the Herdsman of the Year at the Bluegrass National Hereford Show. In 1976 Ashewood Farms bred and showed the champion pen of 3 bulls at the Dixie National. He also had the 1980 Tennessee State Champion Bull and had a southeast show heifer of the year. Billy has served as a Tennessee voting delegate for the AHA Board of Directors for many years. He is proud that Tennessee has had two members serve as Chairman of the AHA Board during his tenure as a delegate and that the southeast quadrant is well-represented on the board. Billy played a role in the development of the Tennessee Hereford Marketing Program. This feeder calf sale, hosted by Tennessee Livestock Producers (TLP), gained national attention
Trask’s breeding management practices have been an integral part of his approach to making decisions throughout the years. At the close of our conversation, I asked Billy if he had any words of wisdom for the upcoming generation of Hereford breeds to have success and longevity in this business. He recommended that you determine what kind of program you plan to pursue (producing commercial bulls, show stock, etc.). He said “you can’t be everything to everything. Jack of all trades and master of none, those purebred breeders usually fade out.” He says not to expect instant prosperity. Building a brand and reputation takes time. He encouraged young breeders to get involved and stay informed. Be active in your breed association along with the local and state cattlemen’s association. Don’t get caught up in tunnel vision.
while Billy served as President of the Tennessee Polled Hereford Association. At that time feeder calves were being shipped from multiple states to TLP on sale day. The sale grew to near 1,300 head, almost filling the sale barn to capacity. Billy has worked to promote Certified Hereford Beef (CHB). He convinced Dusty Turner, manager of Supreme feeders in Kansas, to speak with National Packing Company about taking Hereford cattle during the early stages of CHB. This conversation led to contact with Greg Huffines, and the National Packing Company became contractors for CHB. Billy feels this is a great accomplishment because it benefited everyone with Herefords. Billy spoke about four men who served as mentors for him in the industry. He believes Robert Totusek, his livestock judging coach at OSU, helped him create the mindset to succeed. George Kleier, general manager of Hull Dobbs Ranch, went out of his way to help Billy learn about the cattle business. Odell Gelven, former manager of Ogeechee Farms and a National Polled Hereford Show judge, has been a friend to him since the early 1960s. Odell has served as an inspiration and guiding force. At 92 years old, he still calls Billy every six weeks to check-in. Finally, he says that Neil
Billy said the most important factor a new producer needs to focus on is profitability. He has noticed over the years that a lot of operations failed because they did not watch the cash flow. In the end, he says it all comes down to one thing “Sell them for more than it cost to raise them”.

Q&A with Sally Wingler, National Hereford Women Director by Kathryn Ingram
S
ally Hart Wingler of Christiana, Tennessee was elected to a four-year term to the National Hereford Women (NHW) Board of Directors. This is a distinguished accomplishment, and we are proud to have a Tennessee representative on this board. I recently had the chance to speak with Sally and asked her a few questions about her experience in running for the NHW board and her new responsibilities.
then gives their nominations for the board to be voted on at the National Hereford Women’s Meeting in Kansas City in October. The directors are elected from the four geographical areas of the United States. The board consists of 12 members representing the four geographical areas.
How did you initially become involved with Hereford cattle?
The mission of the National Hereford Women is to: promote Hereford Cattle, provide leadership & educational opportunities for Hereford women and youth, and to educate cattle breeders and consumers about Hereford cattle
I grew up on a registered Polled Hereford Farm in Pikeville. I am a third-generation Hereford breeder. I began my love for Hereford cattle at a young age. When I was old enough to join 4-H I started showing. I was an active member of the Tennessee Junior Polled Hereford Association. In 1987 I was the Tennessee Junior President. I became the 1987 Tennessee Polled Hereford Queen. I began college in the Fall of 1987 at Middle Tennessee State University where I majored in Animal Science. In December of 1987, I became a National 4-H Beef Winner. Can you describe your current involvement with Herefords? I guess you can say I have come full circle in my involvement with Hereford Cattle. Russ and I have two children, Foster, and Lauren, who are highly active in the Hereford cattle breed. This allows me to do what I love and that is being involved in the Hereford cattle industry. We have a small cow/calf operation, Cedar Forest Farm, in Christiana. We enjoy showing Hereford cattle on the local, state, and national levels. What motivated you to run for the NHW board of directors?
Can you give a brief outline of the contributions the NHW provides for the Hereford industry?
What will be your responsibilities for the board this year? I will serve in many capacities on many committees. Serving on the board obligates me to offer my time and talent to the National Hereford Women as we continue the growth of the Hereford breed and our youth. This year some of my responsibilities will include being on scholarship committees along with the National Hereford Queen program and various other committees. What are you looking forward to the most during your time on the board? I have discovered long ago that the Hereford breed is the greatest group of people with which to be involved. I cannot wait to spend the next four years promoting the Hereford breed and meeting all the new people as I travel down the road to “Come Home to Hereford”.
In 1989 I was elected to the National Junior Polled Hereford board of Directors. This was one of the greatest accomplishments for me. I was able to learn on a national level about Hereford cattle. I knew that one day I had high hopes of being involved in the National Hereford Women’s organization. I felt that the time was right for me to pursue the National board. Can you describe the process of running for the board? The organization was formed in 2009 when the two women’s organizations joined together. The National Hereford Women have a platform laid out when it comes to running for the board. You are required to complete an application which includes a short essay, resume, and letters of recommendation. This is then given to the nominating committee for review. The nominating committee

2020 THMP Premiums Soar into 3 Figures!! by John Woolfolk
H
ereford breeders from Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama that chose to participate in the 22nd Annual Fall THMP were rewarded with some of the highest rewards ever for participating in the THMP. This has been the goal since the first sale of trying to find a way to reduce or eliminate those frustrating discounts that are being placed on Hereford calves selling at auctions. The average weekly price for calves selling across the state, as determined by the USDA Market News, has always been the benchmark to determine the level of success which the marketing efforts are having toward eliminating discounts. The 2020 sale saw every weight group, except one, not only eliminate discounts, but return a premium above the state average price to consignors. Those premiums were topped by the $289.49 per head above market bonus offered for a group of steers weighing an average of 919 lbs and selling to UPI for $1.215 per pound compared to the weekly average of $0.90. Four groups of steers sold for $100 or more over the weekly average and the total steer consignment averaged $100.83 per head premiums. Heifers were in strong demand as well bringing as much as $165 over market and averaging as a group $87 per head. I hope that those THA members that are not selling calves through the THMP are finding markets as strong as this one continues to be.
