2 | Welcome

Welcome to the Winter Season! The Americans for the Arts recently conducted a study in Gunnison County entitled “Arts and Economic Prosperity.” This study uncovered that arts and cultural organizations and their audiences generated $7 million within the county in 2010. The arts support 171 local jobs. Through going out to eat before a show, staying in a lodge, or even buying a souvenir or new outfit for the evening, over $3.5 million was generated in ancillary spending. For visitors, 41.8% of them stated that attending a cultural event was the primary reason for their visit. This means that if a county does not provide a variety of artistic and cultural experiences, it will fail to attract the new dollars of cultural tourists. The arts mean business. Robert Lynch, President and CEO of the Americans for the Arts, opens the study by saying, “Understanding and acknowledging the incredible economic impact of the nonprofit arts and culture, we must always remember their fundamental value. They foster beauty, creativity, originality, and vitality. The arts inspire us, sooth us, provoke us, involve us, and connect us. But they also create jobs and contribute to the economy.” The Arts Alliance of the East River Valley is comprised of 14 separate arts and cultural organizations that spread from Gothic to Gunnison. These are the very organizations that have produced the astounding figures of the study while contributing to the beauty, creativity, originality and vitality Mr. Lynch refers to. It is these organizations that provide visitors and residents the opportunity to enjoy music, theatre, dance, film, visual arts, children’s programs, and workshops. With literally hundreds of events and classes throughout the winter, on virtually every day of the week, the Arts Advisor Magazine is designed to help you navigate this incredibly rich palette of opportunities. This is your comprehensive guide and planning tool to the arts from December through May. Here you may immerse yourself in a weekend workshop in outdoor photography, attend a play or musical event, or peruse the talents of local artists. There are events especially for children, teens and adults. You can be an experienced aficionado or a “never-ever.” So whether you are visiting for a week or staying for a lifetime, there is an event, class or workshop that will call to you in these pages. The Arts Alliance invites you to immerse yourself in our vibrant communities, bursting with artistic talents. Use the Arts Advisor to diversify your stay in the area. Or, as a resident, support a thriving industry that not only helps you expand your personal horizons, but contributes to the economic sustainability of our communities as well. We hope you will agree that the Gunnison Valley is an incredible destination for the arts. Be inspired and uplifted by what you experience and learn. Embrace your own creativity. Feed your soul. DECEMBER 27–29 Crested Butte Mountain Theatre: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever Everyone agreed that the six Herdman kids were the worst kids in the world. They lied, they stole, they hit little kids, they talked dirty, and even the girls smoked cigars. Sunday School was a safe haven for the other children because the Herdmans never went there. But when the Herdmans show up one Sunday looking for chocolate cake, they hear about the Christmas pageant and decide they want to take part. To the dismay of everyone involved, the Herdmans land the main parts in the play. Although everyone expects a disaster, the Herdmans bring a fresh interpretation to the Christmas story, a story they had never heard before. Written by Barbara Robinson. Doors at 7:00 p.m. Curtain at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $15 adults, $13 members, $10 students. Mallardi Cabaret Theatre, Second & Elk, Crested Butte. (970) 349–0366. www.cbmountaintheatre.org.

Arts Calendar January | 13 DECEMBER 28 Precious Metal Clay Jewelry Crafting This is like no other jewelry workshop! Precious metal clay, PMC, is a crafting medium with the consistency of polymer clay that is comprised of very small particles of metal (in this case silver). The “clay” is used to form beautiful pendants, rings, and earrings for jewelry pieces. Once the clay has been shaped to the user’s liking, it is fired in a tabletop kiln. During the firing process, the binder in the PMC burns away, incredibly leaving a 99% pure silver piece. Once out of the kiln, the piece can be burnished for shine or intentionally tarnished with liver of sulfur, which is capable of creating a rainbow of metallic colors on the surface of the silver from golds, greens, blues, and violets to pure black. No experience is necessary, and students familiar with PMC and those who are new to the medium are both encouraged to join this workshop. Private lessons also available. 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. $85 includes all materials. The Art Studio of the Center for the Arts, 111 Elk Ave., Crested Butte. 349–7044. crestedbuttearts.org. (970) 349–7044. wwwcrestedbuttearts.org. Tim O‘Brien In Tim O’Brien’s music, things come together. The uncanny intersection of traditional and contemporary elements in his songwriting, his tireless dedication to a vast and still-expanding array of instruments, and his ongoing commitment to place himself in as many unique and challenging musical scenarios as possible has made him a key figure in today’s thriving roots music scene — and well beyond it. O’Brien’s presence — be it as a bandleader, songwriter, mentor, instrumentalist, or vocalist — has been strongly felt not only in his own rich music, but in the many recordings of his songs by such artists as the Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, Dierks Bentley, Nickel Creek, Kathy Mattea, the New Grass Revival, and the Seldom Scene, and in his recorded collaborations with Steve Martin, the Chieftains, and innumerable others. Most recently, O’Brien has been performing before capacity crowds in the band of Mark Knopfler, who described O’Brien as “a master of American folk music, Irish music, Scottish music — it doesn't matter; a fine songwriter and one of my favorite singers.” 8:00 p.m. $35.
