Celebrating the East River Valley as a Nationally Recognized Arts Destination! T H I S PA S T Y E A R , C R E S T E D B U T T E WA S C H O S E N by ArtPlace as one of America’s top twelve small town arts destinations for its high concentration of arts non-profits, core arts-oriented businesses, and workers in creative occupations. In other words, the initiative recognizes smaller communities in the country where the arts are central to creating the kinds of places where people want to live, work, and visit. Deemed by ArtPlace as “art-centric,” Crested Butte was described as “A town of less than 1,500 people in mountainous Gunnison County, Colorado … it is also home to a robust arts scene throughout the year.” In Gunnison County we know our arts actually robustly spread from Gothic to Gunnison. We believe that the collaborative efforts of the Arts Alliance played a strong roll in this ArtPlace recognition. The Arts Alliance of the East River Valley is comprised of 13 separate arts and cultural organizations throughout Gunnison County. These are the very organizations that provide visitors and residents the opportunity to enjoy music, theatre, dance, film, visual arts, children’s programs, and workshops. T H E A R T S A S A D E S T I N AT I O N Working Together to Further the Development of the Arts in Gunnison Valley THE ARTS ALLIANCE IS AN INFORMAL COLLECTION of the Gunnison Valley’s non-profit arts groups, and was resurrected by Center for the Arts Director Jenny Birnie in 2008. The Alliance meets monthly and allows our arts community the opportunity to communicate and coordinate our efforts. The Alliance produces this publication, The Arts Advisor, which is an all arts calendar distributed in hotels, crested butte galleries and at the chamber of commerce. The Arts Advisor is a key tool for developing the valley into an arts destination because it provides visitors a full view of the extensive arts amenities that our arts community produces. We believe that we will be more successful at attracting and reattracting visitors if we can provide them a well rounded experience. So instead of arts organizations competing for a limited local audience, the Arts Alliance has embraced the concept of a mutually supportive arts community, that we believe will make us more successful at bringing new audiences to the valley. In this vein the Arts Alliance has embraced the concept of event collaboration, and also in explicitly identifying events with the best potential to draw new visitors from larger population centers. To date the Crested Butte arts community has been perhaps less successful than some other ski towns, and the Arts Alliance is the organization that can change that. We have identified four events that have an obvious potential to draw new visitors. The Wine and Food Festival, put on by the Center for the Arts, receives strong out of valley patronage. The Crested Butte Music Festival brings international musicians to the Valley for an incredible sevenweek experience of classical music, a bluegrass festival, and world renowned opera. The Crested Butte Film Festival, as three successful film festivals in Telluride demonstrate, has

strong potential to draw new visitors. The Crested Butte Plein Air Invitational, executed by the Oh-Be-Joyful Gallery, with the Center for the Arts acting as a non-profit sponsor, is the largest top shelf plein air painting event happening in the US this year. The Invitational will draw many hundreds of painters, patrons, and national art magazine VIPs to Crested Butte beginning in early June — then in crescendo fashion to its Grand Opening on July 12th. In a time when the ski industry has obvious demographic and (at lower elevations) apparent climate challenges, the arts are an essential opportunity for Crested Butte to help itself. We have as much to work with as any ski town for developing ourselves as an arts destination. As a group the Arts Alliance has identified an agenda of first mutually supporting these four events, and then developing other new events with the ability to draw new visitors to our valley. We can bring a new and good audience here with cultural events, the method is demonstrated. In that spirit I ask you to support these events — by informing your out of town friends about them, or volunteer to help execute them, or patronize them yourself so as to help them grow. Consider sending this publication to your friends to entice them to come here for an event that would be of interest to them. If you have ideas or input that you would like to share with the local art community, the Arts Alliance is the place to do that. Let’s work together to further develop the East River Valley as a place that people come from far and wide to enjoy life. Please put your shoulder into supporting this outstanding offering of cultural events. SHAUN HORNE Co-Chair, Arts Alliance w w w. g u n n i s o n v a l l e y a r t s . o r g

A DEDICATED COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER: Partnerships developed by the Center with other arts and culture nonprofits creates a unique opportunity to create a true community arts center with co-located organizations sharing spaces and resources, creating efficiencies and providing extraordinary programs under one roof! WE HAVE OUTGROWN OUR CAPACITY: Staff offices, classrooms, meeting and work spaces, and indications point to further growth of our audiences. In order to continue to welcome newcomers and expand our programming, we see a need for a new facility with greater efficiencies and lower operating costs. THE EVOLVING NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY: The tremendous growth of our programs and significant needs of our community and non profit partners necessitates a larger building that promotes the most effective mission delivery. The Center also needs spaces that are accessible to those with special needs. INCREASED ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION: The vision that led to the construction of our first facility came from a small founding group who wanted to create a welcoming home for all who wanted to attend. In recent years our attendance has been growing by 15% each year. It is clear that we offer something that many are in search of — a true sense of belonging, opportunities to grow and share, and prompts to action for worthwhile causes. MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT IN THE ARTS: Beyond being open and welcoming, we have a commitment to greater engagement with and service to our community. We have been taking important steps in increasing this commitment, through our partnerships. INTIMATE YET IMPROVED SPACES: Our building project will also provide greater opportunities to serve, through increased availability of meeting spaces for community and social groups, a children’s museum, as well as providing an intimate yet improved space for arts and music performances, lectures, workshops, presentations, celebrations, and fund-raisers.

In 2013, the Center welcomed over 33,000 people through its doors for 624 separate events — 277 being produced by the Center alone. Of these, 57 were Center music presentations, 158 rental events for nonprofits, 136 rehearsals and six school events. The Crested Butte Dance Collective held 52 classes and 146 rehearsals serving over 650 dancers. The Art Studio conducted over 90 days of instruction to over 500 budding artists. In addition, the Crested Butte Wine & Food Festival served 750 patrons and Tour de Forks hosted close to 800 guests last summer featuring 18 nationally recognized chefs. The Center initiated a campaign for a new building in January 2014 with the goal of constructing a 25,000 square foot building at the current site. The overall project cost is $15 million and includes five years of funds for operation. We hope to open the doors in August 2017. Crested Butte is quickly becoming a world class arts destination and the Center is proud to be a leader in supporting the community in reaching this goal. The arts are a significant economic driver and a major draw for tourists to our community and surrounding Valley. Our goal is to build a new and lively facility that will offer activities and programs for children, youth and adults every day of the week. We have an identified need to build a facility that will effectively serve the community and future generations and the time to act is now!

A P R E S T I G I O U S I N V I TAT I O N Crested Butte Invited to Apply for the State of Colorado Creative Certification C O L O R A D O C R E AT I V E I N D U S T R I E S announced this Spring that eleven communities were invited to apply for the Creative District Certification Program and Crested Butte is in the running for this prestigious designation. As many as seven communities may be accepted as Candidates for Colorado certification. “The goal of this program is to help Colorado Creative Districts achieve the administrative structure, funding streams, community engagement process, strategic plan and staff structure that provide both financial sustainability and opportunities for economic growth,” said Margaret Hunt, director of CCI. Crested Butte is a quaint town of 1,500 people in mountainous Gunnison County, Colorado designated as a National Historic District with 246 buildings on the registry. A historic coal-mining town and now primarily a recreational tourist destination, it is also home to a robust arts scene throughout the year. Behind its historically colorful Victorian buildings are some of the finest restaurants and galleries in Colorado. Our vibrant mountain town is designated as the “official wildflower capital” of Colorado. Crested Butte welcomes visitors throughout the year with an amazing array of one-of-a-kind festivals, a multitude of cultural events, recreational opportunities and live performances that reflect the lifestyle, natural beauty and western traditions for the Colorado Rocky Mountains. In April 2013, ArtPlace named Crested Butte one of America’s top small town art places. This new initiative recognizes smaller communities in the country where the arts are central to creating the kinds of places where people want to live, work and visit. Designation was given because Crested Butte had the highest concentration of arts non-profits, core arts-oriented businesses, and workers in creative occupations among smaller towns in the U.S.

Crested Butte Creative District Crested Butte has been a magnet for artists for many years and the beauty of the natural landscape is unparalleled. It is a place of inspiration that attracts creative people with an entrepreneurial spirit. The proposed Crested Butte Creative District encompasses the historical district of Elk Avenue and extends to the Center for the Arts, the primary community arts center surrounded by parks space in the center of town. The proposed district includes 16 artist-owned studios and galleries, 3 co-op galleries, 10 Art Walk events yearround and 10 performance venues including independent restaurants, bars and coffee shops and numerous restaurants hosting exhibitions of local art. The artistic talent is extremely diverse and ranges from metal work and photography to hand blown glass and wood working and everything in between. Many renowned individual artists call Crested Butte home including award-winning filmmakers w w w. g u n n i s o n v a l l e y a r t s . o r g

and Emmy award winning television producers, architects, designers, published writers, actors, dancers, musicians, painters, photographers and chefs. KBUT community radio is a treasured cultural resource with local and national programming. Crested Butte is home of one of the nation’s top arts festivals with over 12,500 people in attendance each year. Now in its 42nd year, the Crested Butte Arts Festival features incredible art, fantastic cuisine, exhilarating entertainment, artist and chef demonstrations, children’s activities and an art auction. Crested Butte also features the 18th annual Crested Butte Music Festival with 45 events during a six week period in the summer. In 2013, the festival reached 8,026 people, constituting a 75% growth in three years. Programming includes an internationally recognized opera, the Marcello Giordani Young Artist Program, Bluegrass in Paradise (a two day bluegrass festival in July), and Gypsy Jazz in Paradise (a 3 day festival in August). The Crested Butte Film Festival, celebrating its 4th year in 2014, has experienced a 65% increase in attendance, serving over 3,300 patrons during the last weekend in September. The four day festival offers 59 events — films, children’s film programs, director talks — to inspire and educate audiences to spark creativity, cultural awareness, social and environmental change. A monthly film series is also offered throughout the year.

A Buzzing Corridor In the summer months, there are literally hundreds of arts and culture events and classes throughout the summer on virtually every day of the week in the Creative District. This creative corridor is continuously buzzing with amazing energy for opportunities for everyone — full time residents, tourists and second home owners. The Crested Butte Mountain Theatre is at the end of the proposed Creative District on 1st Avenue and has been offering community theater productions for the past 40 years. Other annual festivals of note include the Crested Butte Wine & Food Festival showcasing the culinary arts locally and regionally and the Crested Butte Plein Air Invitational which ranks among the finest pure landscape painting exhibits in the United States. Weekly farmers markets happen every Sunday in the district and feature the work of local artists though AWE Fest, a unique partnership with Artists of the West Elks. “Creative District certification feels like the next logical step for the Crested Butte community,” stated Jenny Birnie, Executive Director of the Center for the Arts. “Over the past ten years, we have experienced unprecedented growth in our programs, festivals and collaborations and we believe this is a perfect time to take a detailed look at ourselves, develop functional collaborations and stronger communication channels,” she added.
