Welcome to Our Summer Season! The Arts Alliance of the East River Valley is comprised of 14 separate arts and cultural organizations that spread from Gothic to Gunnison. Through these organizations visitors and residents can enjoy outdoor concerts, theatre productions, dance performances, film, festivals, art festivals, lectures, opera, music festivals, chamber music, symphony, children’s programs and exhibits, gallery walks, visual arts workshops and exhibits Crested Butte Music Festival — showcasing local and nationally recognized artists. American String Quartet With literally hundreds of events and classes throughout the summer, on virtually every day of the week, the Arts Advisor Magazine is designed to help you navigate this incredibly rich palette of opportunities. This is your comprehensive guide and planning tool to the arts from June to October. Here you may immerse yourself in a weekend workshop in plein air painting, attend an outdoor concert, or peruse the talents of local artists. There are events especially for children, teens and adults. You can be an experienced aficionado or a “never-ever.” So whether you are visiting for a week or staying for a lifetime, there is an event, class or workshop that will call to you in these pages. Artists of the West Elks (AWE) aspires to unify, enrich and educate novice, emerging and professional artists and art lovers by encouraging and challenging them to develop to their full potential. AWE nurtures artists in an atmosphere of mutual respect and provides opportunities to network, exhibit work and share knowledge. We are located in the West Elk Mountains area of Colorado, including Crested Butte, Gunnison, Lake City, Paonia, and the surrounding areas.

The Crested Butte Arts Festival, celebrating the visual, performing and culinary arts, is a non-profit arts organization which hosts the annual arts festival on Elk Avenue in August. Now in its 40th year, the awardwinning, juried festival features 175 national and international artists as well as fantastic cuisine, exhilarating entertainment, artist demonstrations, chef demonstrations, children’s activities, and an art auction. In addition, the festival gives back to the community in the form of art education and outreach programs in the local schools as well as art specific sponsorships. In the past five years, the festival has granted more than $40,000 to local arts events and organizations.

The Center for the Arts is home to popular signature events and a wide variety of indoor and outdoor attractions. Visitors young and old enjoy a year-round schedule of live music, dance and theater performances as well as art exhibits, speakers and much more. The Center for the Arts strives to enrich and engage the community by fostering artistic expression and cultural experiences in Colorado’s Upper East River Valley. CRESTED BUTTE DANCE COLLECTIVE (970) 560–9485 | www.crestedbuttearts.org/cbdancecollective The Crested Butte Dance Collective is a group of dancers, choreographers, and artists who have come together to build community and inspire self-discovery through dance. The CBDC supports and encourages the dancing spirit in every person through educational classes, community events, and performances. The Dance Collective annually creates the sell-out smash hit Move the Butte and Vinotok's Celebration of the Harvest Mother in addition to capturing the spotlight at other parades, festivals and events.

The annual festival runs Thursday, September 29th, through Sunday, October 2nd, just as the aspens are turning. Make this a great weekend getaway of films, discussion, and culture in stunning surroundings. Films include documentaries, features, and shorts, including Academy Award nominees, films from Cannes and Sundance, as well as other unknown gems. Attending the festival is fun and easy. We provide an open avenue for creative expression through community participation in all aspects of theatrical productions and foster the growth of theatre as an art form through high-quality contemporary, classical and original productions. The Crested Butte Mountain Theatre, home of the Mallardi Cabaret in the historic Old Town Hall at Second and Elk, offers a diverse season schedule of plays, adult and children’s workshops, youth programs, film and musical events throughout the year for the benefit of residents and visitors to our community. The Festival opens on July 4, and features more than 40 performances in symphony, opera, chamber, bluegrass and jazz over six weeks. The spectacular line-up consists of more than 150 artists from around the world, including award-winning performers and musical legends.

CRESTED BUTTE SCHOOL OF DANCE (970) 349–5686 | www.dancecrestedbutte.org Crested Butte School of Dance is a community-based educational organization now in its 30th year of offering classes for students ages three to adult in jazz, tap, ballet, belly dance, hip hop, creative movement, and contemporary dance. Classes are held at the Pump Room studio in Crested Butte and all students and faculty perform in the recitals held in May.

CRESTED BUTTE WRITERS CONFERENCE (970) 349–9296 | www.crestedbuttewritersconference.org The Crested Butte Writers Conference is hosted every June by the Crested Butte Writers, a dynamic and diverse group of people bonded not by location, but by the love of mountains and the written word. We share a strong commitment to furthering an educational, open, supportive, and creative writing community for writers. All are welcome. In 2012 at the conference there will be 12 presenters ranging from beloved locals, to publishing professionals, and bestselling and award winning authors. June Art Camp & Science Camp at The Studio at The Trailhead A day camp for kids ages 5 to 12 designed to make kids think, problem solve and exercise their creative minds, all while having a blast painting, sculpting, drawing and designing! Independent Study for Ceramic Artists

A pre-kindergarten drop-off program in art and science for children ages 3 to 5 years. Kids explore various mediums such as painting, drawing, ceramics, chemistry, biology, and engineering while developing their natural creativity and acquiring confidence in exploratory endeavors. This time provides an opportunity for adult ceramic artists who no longer want the structure of a class, but want to work independently with clay during open studio hours. JUNE 3, 10, 17, 24 Science on Sundays at The Trailhead Join resident scientist and Creative Director, Kelly Frimel, for an adventure in hands-on discovery and experimentation. With the scientific method as a guide, Kelly engages scientists in weekly experiments that test a variety of scientific and mathematical concepts. JUNE 3, 10, 17 Poi Workshops All ages — explore the mind, body, and spirit through object/gravity manipulation. Find your inner balance and show your true physical mandala through poi. Spin weights around a center point in concentric circles guided by specific geometric patterns. This skill is fun and easy to learn, so come and learn basic principles such as; poi mentality, balance, smoke and mirrors, planes, interpretative/ecstatic, glow/flow basics, with the opportunity to play with fire if you like after each class! Clay Creators (7 to 10 year olds) Students will learn hand building skills such as pinch and coil pots, and will use slab techniques to create mugs, piggy banks, vases and bowls. JUNE 5 Crested Butte Writers: Writing Together Do you like to write? JUNE 6–JULY 18 Evening Wheel for Adults The art of throwing clay on a potter’s wheel is a fun skill for producing functional and artistic ceramic works. Sessions include centering, throwing, trimming, handles, cylinders and bowls, shaping, decorating, glazing and firing. This class accommodates a range of abilities and interests of students, including the use of slips and altering wheel thrown pieces. Glaze Your Own Pottery This family-friendly activity is designed for kids of all ages. Each participant will choose a piece of pottery to design and paint with glaze. We’ll fire your pieces and you can pick them up within the week. Kids under 6 please bring an adult partner. Dansummer Dance Intensive

JULY 16–20 Street Art: Speed Painting and Graffiti for Middle & High School Students Instructor John Meckes focuses on the everchanging and sometimes controversial world of grafitti and street art. BluOrbit is an instrumental Funky Soul-Jazz group from Telluride, Colorado. They routinely throw down non-stop groove and improvisation, stating Funky Soul-Jazz themes. Vitek Kruta presents “Contemplating Forms,” exploring the interaction of forms, space and perception. Vitek Kruta is a professional artist, muralist, art restorer, designer and teacher. His work has been featured in exhibitions in former Czechoslovakia, France, Germany,United States and Canada.Mr. Kruta was trained in Old-World techniques of Fine and Decorative Arts in Czech Republic and Germany, where he attended schools and worked as restorer of historical buildings, castles and churches before coming to the United States in 1991. Since his arrival to USA, Mr. Kruta continues his carrier as freelance artist, designer and art restorer, teacher, instructor and consultant for various public and not for profit organizations and groups, schools and business associates. Precious Metal Clay (PMC) Jewelry Crafting Workshop Taught by local artist Mary Tuck, this is like no other jewelry workshop! Precious metal clay, PMC, is a crafting medium, with the consistency of polymer clay, that is comprised of very small particles of metal (in this case silver). The “clay” is used to form beautiful pendants, rings, and earrings for jewelry pieces. Once the clay has been shaped to the user’s liking, it is fired in a tabletop kiln.
