The Year of Partnership 2011 WAS AN EXCITING YEAR OF DEVELOPING KEY PARTNERSHIPS with progressive community arts organizations in order to expand the offerings at the Center. These joint ventures support our mission of being a community arts center that offers engaging opportunities and educational experiences to enrich and expand the life of our community. In 2011, the Center for the Arts and the Crested Butte Dance Collective joined together in a new partnership in which the Center serves as the fiscal sponsor. For the Center, partnering with the CBDC fulfills a goal of helping a community program to grow. As the Center looks to its upcoming facility expansion, being able to provide improved rehearsal space for an organization such as the CBDC has always been a driving force for the plan. 2011 also marked the inauguration of a dedicated visual arts space and expanded visual arts program. The Art Studio at the Center for the Arts (ASCA), located at 111 Elk Avenue, offers an enticing selection of instructional and experiential activities to attract both accomplished, as well as aspiring, artists. For 25 years the Center has worked to make art available to all in order to educate, inspire, enrich and expand an individual’s experience. Throughout its history the Center has featured programming in live music, theatre, comedy and visual arts. These new partnerships allow the Center to expand its offerings to a higher degree in order to meet the growing needs of our community. 2012 marks 25 years of the Center “bringing the arts to life” in

Crested Butte. Since its beginnings from a county garage, the Center remarkably transformed into an arts facility, and now designated by the Town of Crested Butte as a “community arts center,” the Center for the Arts has served as a welcoming “home for arts and culture” for residents and visitors in the Gunnison Valley. Throughout this 25th anniversary year, the Board, Staff, and pARTners are delighted to offer an array of engaging opportunities and educational experiences to enrich and expand the life of our community. The Center for the Arts Board and Staff continue to focus on longerterm critical improvements to the current facility intended to ensure this remarkable commitment to visual and performing arts in the Gunnison Valley for the next 25 years. Recognizing and appreciating that the arts are integral to the economic vitality of the region, we genuinely welcome your engagement, participation and active support of these crucial efforts. On behalf of the Board of Directors, members of staff, and myself, I want to express our sincere gratitude for the many generous contributions and critical investments in the arts and culture in Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley from the Center’s friends and donors during these many years. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of such a dynamic and generous community.

JENNY BIRNIE Executive Director

Center for the Arts and The Studio Art School Team Up with Expanded Programming

Crested Butte Dance Collective Aerial Workshop, Winter Season 2011 Photo by Nathan Bilow

CENTER FOR THE ARTS AND THE STUDIO ART SCHOOL have joined forces to create The Art Studio of the Center for the Arts, or ASCA. The Studio Art School closed its location next to Clark’s Market and now offers its adult visual arts programming through this new location in partnership with the Center, and its children’s programming through the Trailhead Children’s Discovery Museum in Mt. Crested Butte. Melissa Mason, proprietor of The Studio Art School, manages the physical space at the new ASCA; works collaboratively with the Center on program design; hires and manages instructors; and provides the technical artistic equipment. Mason, who designed and implemented visual arts programs at three other schools including the Slate River School and Crested Butte Academy, is also a member of the Arts Alliance and the Visual Arts ad hoc committee of the Center’s Board of Directors. The committee’s goal is to assist the Center in developing a new vision for the visual arts in the community, and to provide feedback on the expanded facility plan related to the visual arts spaces. The Center brings its non-profit mission of offering engaging opportunities and educational experiences to enrich and expand the life of the community to the mutually beneficial partnership. Additionally, the Center is offering financial, marketing and professional support to the ASCA. “What we’re accomplishing together is so much more than I could ever have done on my own,” says Mason, “The visual arts in this valley is igniting. Working with the Center and the Arts Alliance is allowing the big picture visions to actually begin happening.” The Center for the Arts’ number one goal is to be recognized as a “best-in-class” facility for visual and performing arts. Its stated Values are to provide art for everyone; to add creativity, innovation and diversity to the life of the community; and to extend accessibility to art through diverse programming. Now, with the new partnership with The Studio Art School, and its incredible roster of workshops, classes and lectures, those visions are becoming a fast reality in the visual arts. “We are only able to have limited offerings of visual arts because we don’t have the space in our current facility,” says Jenny Birnie, Executive Director for the Center, “Opening the new space on Elk Avenue with The Art Studio allows us to grow our adult visual arts programming in preparation for the Center’s expansion.” Throughout the year, ASCA plans to provide a The Art Studio of Center for the Arts, variety of eight-week classes in ceramics; Day of the Arts Workshop, Summer 2011 photography; painting; drawing; printmaking; Photo by Nathan Bilow graffiti, spray paint and modern street art; crochet and knitting; sewing; jewelry making; and Meet the Masters classes which combine art and art history instruction. Also available will be single session workshops, private lessons, private parties, events for local organizations, Women’s Retreats, Guest Artist Lectures, Community Critique Sessions, Continuing Education for Local Artists, and Apprenticeships and Continued Visual Art Education for Youth. The Shared Artists’ Space memberships, or SAS, also continues at ASCA. Here, local artists may use the ASCA for their own projects with 24-hour, seven day a week access; personal storage for supplies and works in progress; access to the potter’s wheels and other ceramics supplies; and use of the kiln. Memberships are $85 per month or $80 per month when signing up for the entire year. Artist and ceramicist Laura Elm is the Managing Artist for the SAS. As a working studio, the ASCA will also have gallery sales as part of its storefront where patrons may purchase local art. “This is step one of a five-year plan the Visual Arts ad hoc committee is working on,” says Mason, “The Art Studio is becoming a team player in the broader picture of bringing people to the valley for visual arts. We see this area becoming a visual arts mecca. Getting people excited about this type of programming paves the way for the Center’s planned expansion.”

CENTER FOR THE ARTS CRESTED BUTTE FINDS A DANCE PARTNER IN 2011, CENTER FOR THE ARTS and the Crested Butte Dance Collective joined together in a new partnership that promises the community a continuing world of exposure and opportunity in this expressive body art form. The Crested Butte Dance Collective (CBDC) seeks to inspire selfdiscovery, create interpersonal connections and build community through movement and dance through education, performance, community partnerships and professional development. The 100% volunteer fueled organization was founded by K.T. Folz, Adge Marziano and Joan Grant and is supported with over 70 volunteers. “When we have access to dance and can share in that dance with our community, it allows us to be connected to ourselves and to each other through a universal language and culture,” explains cofounder KT Folz of her passion to provide dance opportunities to the community. The CBDC’s commitment to make dance available to everyone, regardless of social or economic status, age, gender, or artistic or cultural background, fits perfectly into the Center for the Art’s own values and mission. For 25 years the Center has worked to make art available to all in order to educate, inspire, enrich and expand an individual’s experience. Throughout its history the Center has featured programming in live music, theatre, comedy and visual arts. Dance has always been an important part of these diverse offerings as well. Education, community outreach and inclusiveness are at the core of both organizations. For the Center, partnering with the CBDC fulfills a goal of helping

a community program to grow. As the Center looks to its upcoming facility expansion, being able to provide improved rehearsal space for an organization such as the CBDC has always been a driving force for the plan. “The Center’s board and staff are pleased to join forces with such an outstanding group like the Dance Collective. We are excited to assist them in growing their programs and performances that inspire artistic expression for so many people in our community,” says Jenny Birnie, Executive Director for the Center. In the partnership, the Center is the fiscal sponsor of the CBDC. As such, the Center is responsible for community outreach, fundraising, marketing, grant writing, sponsorship building, ticket sales and budget maintenance. The CBDC is responsible for providing the community with new dance modalities with corresponding instructors; and creating choreography, conducting rehearsals, and managing technical requirements for productions. Both entities will collaborate on dance program development. While the Center is in charge of managing the funds of the CBDC, these accounts will be kept separately so that those wishing to donate to the CBDC may do so through the Center. “Jenny and the Center for the Arts board are giving the Dance Collective an opportunity of a lifetime,” says KT, “Their support will allow us to grow much faster and gives us an opportunity to focus on the creative aspects of dance. We are grateful for this chance they are giving us and plan to make them proud.”
