A Spectacular Summer Season!
2012 MARKED 25 YEARS of the Center “bringing the arts to life” in Crested Butte! Since its beginnings from a county garage, remarkably transformed into an arts facility, and now designated by the Town of Crested Butte as a “community arts center,” the Center for the Arts has served as a welcoming “home for arts and culture” for residents and visitors in the Gunnison Valley. Throughout this 25th anniversary year, the Board, Staff, and pARTners offered an array of engaging opportunities and educational experiences to enrich and expand the life of our community including: • Eight memorable evenings of free music in Town Park through the 20th Annual Alpenglow Summer Concert Series including the March 4th Marching Band with over 2,000 patrons on July 2nd! • The sold out performance of country icon Pat Green • Witnessing the gastronomic knowledge and edible prowess of local chefs at the 9th Annual Chefs on the Edge competition • Experiencing an intimate evening of music with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Richie Furay • A vast array of dance offerings through a unique partnership with the Crested Butte Dance Collective • The first of many years of successful partnership with the Studio Art School in offering outstanding visual arts programs at our new annex located at 111 Elk Avenue Thank you for joining us in celebrating the 25th anniversary by attending events at the Center, enjoying the glorious mountain vistas and musical refrains of Alpenglow, savoring the delights of Tour de Forks, and honing your artistic talents at the Art Studio! As we look forward to the next 25 years, the Center Board and Staff continue to focus on longer-term critical improvements to the current facility and pursue thoughtful development of the two-facility plan intended to ensure this remarkable commitment to visual and performing arts in the Gunnison Valley for the next 25 years. Recognizing and appreciating that the arts are integral to the economic vitality of the region, we genuinely welcome your engagement, participation and active support of these crucial efforts.

The Crested Butte Dance Collective held 23 classes on the Center Stage serving over 430 dancers and earned $5,000. The Art Studio conducted over 90 days of instruction to over 830 budding artists at our satellite campus at 111 Elk Avenue. These classes garnered $21,000. Summer Season ticket sales were at $12,435 as folks enjoyed everything from bluegrass to funk to modern ballet. Our rental partners for the summer included the Crested Butte School of Dance‘s Spring production, a Youth Council Movie Fundraiser, Crested Butte Mountain Theatre‘s Urinetown, Crested Butte Film Festival films, Crested Butte Music Festival, Public Policy Forum‘s and the Crested Butte News Candidates Forum, among others. It‘s a busy place at the Center these days.

FALL / WINTER NEWSLETTER 2012–2013 5
Chefs on the Edge, 2012 Photo by Nathan Bilow
SUMMER IS THE SEASON FOR THE MAJOR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS to help support all of the inspiring and innovative events and classes the Center produces. As the Center continues to grow programs such as visual arts through the Art Studio of the Center for the Arts and the Piper Gallery, and dance through the Crested Butte Dance Collective, to meet the needs of our diverse community, we need support on a variety of levels. Operating the Center as an affordable community facility means that we must rely on contributions and fundraising for about two-thirds of our budget. This year we raise our hats to Gloria Kern who spearheaded Tour de Forks and the new Survivor Golf Challenge throughout the summer. Her determination, passion and creativity was an inspiration for everyone who believes in the Center‘s mission and wants to see this important community facility not only survive, but grow and thrive into a nationally recognized best-in-class facility. The numbers stack up, and in these economic times, every dollar counts. With 18 Tour de Forks events, nine of these completely sold out. All told after expenses were paid, Tour de Forks hosted 506 attendees raising $47,080 for the Center. Chefs on the Edge (with 85 attendees) raised $12,200; Motown (with 175 attendees) $19,400; and the Survivor Golf Challenge $8,000. With an extra push from Gail Digate in the President‘s Investment Letter we raised another $26,251. At the end of the summer all of these events cumulatively raised $112,931. Woo hoo! The words “thank you” are simply not enough to express the gratitude for Gloria and all of her volunteers, the volunteers of pARTners, each and every one of you who attended an event, bidded on an auction item, and brought a friend along. The Center couldn‘t offer any of its amazing program without your help. Everyone involved should feel proud.

Welcome Heidi Bogart, Development Director Heidi Bogart and Betsy Sherratt, Wilder on the Taylor, Tour de Forks Fundraiser Photo by Nathan Bilow
HEIDI BOGART CAME TO LOVE THE ARTS through her Grandmother. As a young girl, she attended the symphony, the opera and ballet in San Francisco. The arts became a childhood passion. Now as an adult, Heidi wants to make sure that her son, Brewer, had these same opportunities. It was a natural fit for Heidi to come to the Board of Directors of the Center, where she volunteered for two years. There, she served on the Strategic Resource Committee, working to cultivate donors and produce effective fundraisers. “It was two years of job training,” she laughs, as her next evolution into the Center was to become the new Development Director. As the owner of Interior Visions, and former co-owner of the Bacchanale Restaurant, Heidi knows what it takes to employ good time management — a skill well worth having in the bustling environment of the Center. Working with customers gives her the social graces to create smooth relationships with people. A journalism major from University of Colorado, she excels in communication. With all of her business experience, she is able to easily reach out to her

fellow business owners. A resident of the valley since 1994 she is well rooted in the community. With Interior Visions in Crested Butte, but living on a small ranch in Gunnison, Heidi feels lucky to have connections to both ends of the valley. One of her life's loves, her horses, take her up some of her favorite haunts like Mill Creek when she's not working to grow the Center. She and her husband, Scott (owner of Pinnacle Construction), revel in the family time they have together like skiing on the hill with their son. Helping the Center stay financially sustainable is a tough roll as funding from grant sources becomes less and less available. Parameters of arts grants don't often include rural communities like Crested Butte., Heidi explains. “We're up against a very challenging situation,” she admits, “We really need our individual donors to do what they can. We're doing everything we can to find those sources of income. But we want our local donors to know that we really need and appreciate them.”

The Arts & Economic Prosperity IV study provides compelling new evidence that the nonprofit arts and culture are a $7 million industry in Gunnison County — one that supports 171 full-time equivalent jobs and generates $463,000 in local and state government revenue. Nonprofit arts and culture organizations, which spend $3.4 million each year, leverage a remarkable $3.5 million in additional spending by arts and culture audiences — spending that pumps vital revenue into local restaurants, hotels, retail stores, parking garages, and other businesses. By proving that investing in the arts and culture yields economic benefits, Arts & Economic Prosperity IV lays to rest the misconception that communities support the arts and culture at the expense of local economic development. In fact, communities that support the arts and culture not only enhance their quality of life — they also invest in their economic well-being. HAVE YOU ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT YOU COULD DO to help the Center keep its doors open in offering diverse program to the entire community? Don't feel you are able to make a large financial investment? The Friends of the Center Loyalty Program is an inexpensive way for you to help support the Center. These donations help sustain programming such as Alpenglow, our free summer concert series; provide affordable rental rates of our facility for other non-profits and community organizations; help keep ticket costs as low as possible for nationally touring presenters. To extend our gratitude, participants in the Friends of the Center Loyalty Program will receive a variety of ticket specials, lower prices on classes and programs, and special values from local businesses. Your involvement in this program provides an investment in the future of the arts in our valley and helps the Center for the Arts continue to thrive. We are a place where the community unites in cultural experiences and celebrates many talents — experience it!
