About The Center
WE’RE GROWING! In the past year we increased the number of people enjoying the arts by 26%. During 2014 The Center welcomed over 41,000 people through its doors in 50 Center presentations, 162 rental events (for non-profits such as the School of Dance, Music Festival, Avalanche Center, High Country Conservation Advocates, Search and Rescue and the Public Policy Forum), 163 rehearsals and eight school events. As each day passes, we are adding more classes, more workshops, more opportunities for the visual arts, more invigorating performances in the arts. Through all of this it is our vision, our mission and our values that guide our every move. PERFORMANCE ARTS: The Crested Butte Dance Collective held 176 classes, over triple that of last year, serving over 727 dancers, in addition to conducting 126 rehearsals on the Center Stage. Their annual sellout smash hit Move the Butte and revolving-themed fall production currently entertain over 1,500 dance enthusiasts. VISUAL ARTS: The Art Studio conducted over 170 days of instruction to over 900 budding artists at our satellite campus at 111 Elk Avenue, including private lessons, Paint Your Own Pottery
days and children’s programming. There were over 20 Piper Gallery and Art Studio shows for local and regional artists with over 4,000 art admirers and patrons showing up for Artist Receptions, ArtTalks and just browsing the galleries. That’s over 5,000 people enjoying the visual arts in just one year and a doubling of people taking advantage of our art class offerings. FILM: Through our partnership with the Crested Butte Film Festival we helped to offer 15 films to 1,648 film aficionados solely through the Monthly Film

Series, doubling from last year’s attendance numbers. During Film Festival itself, over 1,400 enjoyed events at the Center’s, while we helped to facilitate sales of 3,700 tickets to film events in other locations. CULINARY & VINTNER ARTS: As co-sponsors of the Crested Butte Wine and Food Festival we helped educate and entertain 912 oenophiles, up 162 from last year. Our annual fundraising series, Tour de Forks, hosts almost 800 epicureans in private homes with dinners prepared by the region’s accomplished chefs.

SUMMER SEASON TUE JUL 28 Nahko and Medicine for the People
WED JUN 10 Schiff Dance Collective: “The Untruth i Wore” This contemporary dance piece exposes the essence of our “truths” and their origin. Inspiring the work are conversations that arose from their Boulder and Denver communities stemming from the questions of: “How does what we believe about ourselves affect our lives?” “Where do these stories come from?” “Do they still serve us?” “How do we wade through all the information we are fed from birth to uncover our truth?” Answers transformed into a movement awakening exploring issues of tolerance, inclusion, kindness and collaboration while honoring the struggle of the process and the bravery required to undertake it. Called “stunning,” “a fresh look” and “powerful,” this moving evening is further complemented with opening pieces by the Crested Butte Dance Collective and the Crested Butte School of Dance. 7:00 p.m. Students (18 and up): $12; Adults: $20. Please visit the Crested Butte Dance Collective pages for information on Master Classes offered Tuesday, June 9.
TUE JUN 30 Hot Buttered Rum Hot Buttered Rum’s onstage chemistry fuels a veritable love fest during their live shows where a mindful recklessness gleefully emerges. The enduring camaraderie of these five best friends infuses their original songs, showcasing what Relix Magazine calls “stunning instrumental and vocal virtuosity.” The band’s three songwriters — Nat Keefe (guitar), Erik Yates (banjos, guitars, woodwinds) and Aaron Redner (fiddle, acoustic and electric mandolin) — spin tales about the good times, the bad times, and the roads in between, and belt them from the heart in three-part harmony. Combined with Bryan Horne’s athletic standup bass, and Lucas Carlton’s tasteful percussion, and you’ve got a special kind of bluegrass that is California’s own acoustic music. They’ve taken their show on the road from Telluride Bluegrass Festival to Bonnaroo to the High Sierra Music Festival playing with maestros from Phil Lesh to Chris Thile. 8:00 p.m. $20. FRI JUL 3 Pat Green This is the man you need when, like in his hit single “Carry On,” you are just tired of the city and want to ride through hill country with the ragtop down. Here, life of course has its troubles, but you are saved by angelic women and the harmony of music. Pat Green is simultaneously a Grammy-nominated hit maker with an outsider reputation, a Texas inspiration, and a mainstream country artist who can rock stadium stages with the likes of Gretchen Wilson and Keith Urban. An ace songwriter with 15 years in the recording business and ten albums, he’s co-written songs with artists from Willie Nelson to Jewel. Pat regularly sells out shows from Los Angeles to New York, including the Center for the Arts shows in 2012 and 2014. This year he’s coming with his full band — so be ready! 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 6/26: $40. Regular: $45.

SUN JUL 5 Richie Furay Band Musical legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Richie Furay is the formidable writer, guitarist and vocalist of the pivotal rock group Buffalo Springfield whose organic, home grown musical approach reverberated beyond the 60’s. The group, with famous members such as Stephen Stills and Neil Young, laid the groundwork for the folk-rock and country-rock genres that took root in the 70’s, serving as the foundational precursor to artists such as the Eagles and Jackson Brown. He comes to Crested Butte armed with his newest solo album, just released in 2015, and recent induction in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame for his work with Poco. VIP tickets available for $100 including early entry for premium seat choice and a Dessert Meet & Greet with Richie Furay after the show. 8:00 p.m. Regular: $40. TUE JUL 28 Nahko and Medicine for the People Nahko, an Oregon-native born mix of Apache, Puerto Rican, and Filipino cultures, first began using the unifying power and harmony of music to bridge the cultural gaps dividing his own psyche. He produced a public, musical journal of his journey toward personal, spiritual and communal healing, and Medicine for the People was born. Nahko describes the group more as an “massive empowerment movement,” using music to heal, make change, take action and spread awareness of how to live in harmony with Mother Gaia and each other. Upon release of their recent album, Dark as Night, Nahko and Medicine for the People blasted through the charts, becoming “#4 Top Alternative New Artist Album.” They’ve sold out shows from California to Colorado, toured with Michael Franti and Xavier Rudd, and are playing Wakarusa, High Sierra Music Festival, Reggae on the River, and opening for String Cheese Incident at Red Rocks. If you felt inspired by the Xavier Rudd concert last summer, come get some more positive juice with Nahko and Medicine for the People. 8:00 p.m. $30.

FRI JUL 31 The Soul Rebels The Soul Rebels grew up on the New Orleans brass band tradition. With lush and creative instrumentation they’ve taken that tradition and blended it with funk, soul, hip hop, jazz and rock. The eight-piece lineup boasts eclectic live shows, harnessing the power of horns and drums in the party like atmosphere of a dance club. Their weekly show at New Orleans’ Le Bon Temps Roulé consistently erupts with contagious, shout-along musical mayhem. Touring with Trombone Shorty in 2014, they’re joining Michael Franti for 2015 and have been a mainstay at festivals from Bonnaroo and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, to the Shanghai Jazz Festival in China, and the Java Jazz Festival in Indonesia. Through it all they’re staying true to the roots with grooves that celebrate life in the time-honored New Orleans style while solidifying themselves in the big brass elite. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 7/24: $20. Regular: $25. TUE AUG 4 Rising Appalachia Rising Appalachia is a genre-bending force of sensual sound that uses vocal harmony, lyrical prowess and diverse artistic collaborations to defy cultural clichés. Present day troubadours Leah Song and Chloe Smith draw from a melting pot of genres with influences of folk, soul, roots, world music and poetry, showcasing the alchemy of sibling harmonies paired with banjo and fiddle duets. Joined by Biko Casini (world percussion) and David Brown (stand-up bass, baritone guitar), Rising Appalachia plays folk standards, traditional hymns, old mountain odes, and activist anthems that pull equally from the swampy sounds of the bayou, the contemporary twang of the Appalachian Mountains, and the beat of a global rhythm. They redefine folk music as a truly living art, using it as a tool to spark cultural revolution. They have taken their sacred sound 3 on the road from The Edinburgh Festival Fringe to Burning Man, and X 87 4 won “Green Album of the Year” by the Huffington Post. 8:00 p.m. 7 – rg 349 ne o Early Bird through 7/28: $18. THU AUG 6 Amy Speace “What Amy Speace says — what she sings — she says with a confluence of poetry and honesty, of emotional specificity,” writes The New York Times. Amy Speace is one of the most heralded singers and songwriters of her generation, working for the past ten years under the radar of the mainstream music industry. She began her creative life in New York City in Shakespearean theater with fringe, experimental companies. A chance meeting with legend Judy Collins changed the direction of her life. She joined Judy on tour, subsequently recording her song “The Weight of the World.” She has appeared at Music City Roots and Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, among others, as well as performed with other singer-songwriters greats such as Nanci Griffith and had songs recorded by Red Molly. Opening Act: Tyler Hansen. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 7/30: $15. Regular: $20.

Considered insanely funny, his impeccable timing and weird branch of impish comedy has fans returning again and again. Las Vegas Sun said of him, “Don’t let the rational and mild-mannered shell fool you, Baxley can get as twisted as they come.” Joining Troy is ten-year Denver veteran Nathan Lund. A regular at Denver Comedy Works, Nathan has also opened for Dave Chappelle and been featured at Funny or Die’s Oddball Comedy Fest, the Crom Comedy Festival, and the High Plains Comedy Festival. TUE AUG 11 Tinariwen Life in the desert is resilient and strong, and the people are gentle giants among the sand, storms and sun. For the “Best World Music” Grammy-winning blues band, the desert is Tinariwen’s home, and their hypnotic and electrifying guitar rock reflects the complex realities of their native lands in North West Africa. They are Tuareg, descended from nomadic people who have wandered the dunes for millennia. After being discovered by Western musicians, their songs left the Sahara and were introduced to the world reverberating far from the dusty plains of Mali. For the last ten years, the nomads have performed at nearly every notable festival and venue around the globe, providing international audiences a taste of the aching beauty and lonesome pleasures of the Saharan Assouf. 8:00 p.m. $25.

SAT AUG 22 The Dustbowl Revival The Dustbowl Revival is a Venice, California-based, eight-piece collective that merges old school bluegrass, gospel, pre-war blues and the hot swing of New Orleans to form a spicy roots cocktail. Some call it string band-brass band mash up. It’s infectious, joyous music — a youthful take on time-worn American traditions. Named “Best Live Band in LA” by
The LA Weekly, each Dustbowl performance promises to be a white-knuckle ride through the history of American folk music. They won Independent Music Awards’ “Americana Song of the Year,” have opened for Rebirth Brass Band and Trombone Shorty, and travelled from the Strawberry Music Festival to High Sierra Music Festival. MON JUN 22 Rebecca Frazier and Hit & Run at Red Mountain Park in Crested Butte South Rebecca Frazier and Hit & Run earned their reputation as one of the tightest groups performing when they become the only band to win the top triumvirate of major bluegrass band contests at the Telluride Bluegrass, Rockygrass, and SPBGMA Festival Band Championships. Handspun yet motor-driven, their repertoire features original flatpicking guitar manifestos, ballads, folksy Americana, and barnburning originals coupled with the pure, pining — and at times exposed — soprano tones of a woman who has matured through seasons of heartbreak, loss and love. Beer & food: Tully’s General Store.
MON JUL 6 The Delta Saints There is something sinisterly devout about The Delta Saints’ Psychedelic Voodoo Rock and Roll — a dirty, grinding roots revival harnessing the brackish delta current into something gripping and bold. Alternating between raucous melodies and slow-burning odes to the devil, the Saints haunt the stage with searing harmonica, howling vocals, funk-laced bass lines, and blazing guitar riffs, all eerily punctuated with cacophonous New Orleans-inspired choruses and a newly induced hallucinatory haze. Be prepared to dance. Beer: Shock Top. Food: Sock It To Me.
MON JUN 29 Quemando Quemando spices up Alpenglow with the sultry sounds of salsa. With band members from Mexico, Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico, Quemondo conjures the true, authentic roots of this sensuous musical genre. The eight musicians energize the stage with instruments ranging from a Cuban style drum kit, timbales, congas, bongos, guiro, maracas, shakers, bass guitar, piano, trombone, bass trombone, tenor saxophone, flute, alto saxophone, trumpet and flugelhorn. A popular headliner at the Denver Jazz Festival, let Quemando transport you to those steamy southern climes. Beer: Great Divide Brewing Company. Food: Marchitelli’s Gourmet Noodle.
MON JUL 13 Seryn Nashville-based Seryn is gaining national attention for their use of traditional Appalachian folk and medieval choral hymns in non-traditional ways, their combination of spacey ambiance with strong choral harmonies, and their poignant pop sensibilities with driving rock drums and hints of shoegaze and electronica, all of which keep their sound progressive, relevant and emotional. NPR’s All Songs Considered named Seryn in their “Bands That Should Be Bigger” feature, and Paste Magazine called them “joyful,” ranking them as one of the best albums, performances, songs and bands of the SXSW festival. MON JUL 20 Roxy Roca Austin-based Roxy Roca is a nine-piece powerhouse of Southern Soul Funk with a James Brown showmanship, pure energy and raw aggression that explodes on stage with all cylinders. Inspired by the music of Motown greats from Marvin Gaye to Otis Redding, Roxy Roca fills the audience’s ears with trombone, tenor sax, alto sax, drums, guitar and the spirited vocals of frontman Taye Cannon. An official showcasing artist three years running at SXSW, the band has also appeared with B.B. King, Fitz and The Tantrums and Robert Walter. Beer: Palisade Brewing Company. Food: Marchitellis’ Gourmet Noodle.
MON JUL 27 The Railsplitters The Railsplitters scale new heights through an enthusiastic and contagious bluegrass with rapid tempos, unusual instrumentals and good-time breakdowns. Using powerful vocals, enchanting harmonies, and masterful instrumentals, The Railsplitters have the kind of raw power and abandon that can raise mountains and even a few eyebrows. Calling on genre influences from roots / Americana, country twang, 50’s doo wop, modern pop, and good ol’ fashioned rock ‘n’ roll, they won first place at the 2012 Pickin’ In The Pines in Flagstaff, Arizona and 2013 Rockygrass in Lyons, Colorado. Beer: Telluride Brewing Company. Food: Rotary Club. MON AUG 3 Colin Lake Seattle native Colin Lake’s passion and innate feel for roots music found fertile ground in New Orleans where his powerful vocal style and soulful touch on the guitar and lap steel owe heavily to countless blues greats. Yet Lake also captures the songwriter’s unique
musical vision, delivering penetrating lyrics with soul and gritty sincerity. Lake has opened for legends like Dr. John and performed at New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Austin City Limits Music Festival, the Key West Songwriters Festival and New Orleans’ French Quarter Festival. Beer: Bristol Brewing Company. Food: Teocali Tamale. MON AUG 10 Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds serve up a saucy sonic brew of seriously funky rock, blues, gospel, and soul that’s loud, fun and joy-inducing. Armed with nine musicians and an arsenal of harmonica, guitar, bass, trumpet, saxophones and drums, this New York based hard soul collective is rambunctious and righteous with boisterous horns and bluesy grit. Led by the passionate pipes and sassy swagger of Arleigh Kincheloe, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds have shared the stage with heavyweights from Gov’t Mule to Galactic at festivals from Bonnaroo to the Voodoo Music Experience. But the Kentucky-bred duo of Kris Bentley and Nick Jamerson more aptly name themselves “Appalachiadelicfolksoulrock’n’roll.” With Jamerson on an acoustic guitar and Bentley on a cajón drum, the two capitalize on their sparseness, delivering a raw yet powerful down-home sound that could only come from childhood friends. They boast multiple appearances at the Grand Ole Opry and headlined a sold-out show in New York City demonstrating that this pair has the maturity, confidence and capability to keep on rising. COME WATCH THE SPARKS FLY! The Art Studio and Vinotok host the First Annual Community Collaborative Iron Pour in Crested Butte during the Vinotok celebration. An Iron Pour is the creation of sculpture through the pouring of molten iron into molds. Both local and visiting artists gather to choreograph this intensely beautiful art. The week leading up to the Pour members of the general community (including kids!) may also create their own small iron sculpture by carving into sand “scratch blocks” which are then cast in iron at The Pour. For Artists: Artists are invited to Crested Butte to make work to be cast at the Iron Pour. Beginning Tuesday, September 8, artists have seven days at the Center for the Arts to create molds for sculptures. Iron Pour Director Jesse Blumenthal and Colorado Mesa University Professor Araan Schmidt are on site at The Center all week as a resource by hosting daily workshops and discussions, and leading novice and experienced artists through the mold making and sculpture creation process. If you have never worked in iron — now is your chance! Registration: Only 15 artist spaces available. Register before July 1 for $250. After July 1, spaces are $300. Registration includes all materials and space at The Center throughout the week. For Community Members: Community members can make iron sculptures of their own — and it’s easy to do! At any of the Scratch Block Carving Events you can carve your own design into a pre-made sand block. Once complete, bring it to the Iron Pour and watch the Iron Pour team heat iron to its liquid form and pour it into your mold. It is then cooled in a bath of water leaving you with your own amazing iron sculpture.

GALLERY SHOWS
THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS is proud to be the host of two galleries displaying the work of local and regional artists. Both galleries are free and open to the public for browsing. Art is available for purchase in both galleries and each artist has an opening reception for their show.
Piper Gallery is an open gallery that serves as a vibrant home for local artists to display their work exclusively and affordably while helping to expand their careers. If you’re at a performance at The Center, be sure to browse the Piper Gallery during intermission for the latest show.
Art Studio Gallery is a space devoted to art — from the tables that host a variety of art modality classes, to the walls and shelves that display the art of local artists and art instructors. Stop by the Art Studio Gallery during your strolls down Elk to peruse the current show.

MON JUN 1 – MON JUN 15 William Cameron: “Weaving the Void — Baskets in Space” This series of Baskets is woven from willow harvested around the Gunnison Valley. Traditionally baskets are woven from materials that are dried first, then used later after soaking them in water to reintroduce malleability and reduce the amount of shrinkage caused by drying. This series of baskets is woven from freshly harvested willow allowing them to be manipulated into organic forms that accentuate natural curves in the weave. These Vessels have extended spokes which sprout from the void and bring life and movement into static objects. The Baskets take on forms like that of sea creatures with tentacles stretching out as if to sweep particles back into their void. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: Friday, June 12, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. TUE JUN 2 – SUN JUL 12 Bailey Hosier & Laura Elm: “Life’s Little Intricacies” Bailey and Laura’s artwork draws onlookers deep into the pieces with their use of intricate designs. Both artists see value in bringing these beautiful, imaginative aesthetics into daily life. In this exhibition, encounter curious creatures staring out at you in the form of a coffee cup, or a fractal vortex beckoning you deep into a salad bowl. The magic is showcased via ceramics, drawings and jewelry. At the Art Studio Gallery. Artist Reception: During ArtWalk, Thursday, July 2, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. More details on shows, exhibiting artists’ bios and Artist Submission Guidelines can be found under “Visual Arts” then “Galleries” on the Center’s website.
MON JUN 15 – MON JUN 29 Blair Garth: “Colorado Colors” This collection of paintings was inspired by the artist’s love of color and the outdoors. Using a combination of acrylic paints, hand-printed papers, ink and graphite, Blair Garth illustrates the beauty of Colorado’s natural scenery in a uniquely vibrant art form. Aspen trees, magpies and wildflowers dominate these surprisingly complex canvases. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: Friday, June 26, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. MON JUN 29 – MON JUL 13 Sean Crossen: “The Abstract Life” Sean shows his abstract acrylic paintings on canvas. This show features new work influenced by artists such as Kandinsky, Lichtenstein and Henry Matisse. Artist Reception: Thursday, July 2, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. MON JUL 13 – MON JUL 20 Elizabeth Overholser: “Wildflowers from the Mountain Side” Bring the wildflowers from the mountainside into your home. Columbines, glacier lilies, paintbrushes, lupine and so much more! Elizabeth Overholser exhibits her quilted art interpretations of wildflowers found in the Crested Butte area during the summer months. Based on annual visits to the Upper East River Valley since 1974, Elizabeth produces functional art for people to enjoy. In addition to wall hangings, she makes items such as quilts and potholders, hoping her creations will be useful as well as make people feel good. At the Piper Gallery. The work is available for visitors to actually hold and turn the pages. She investigates the interplay of text and textures, using a mixed media approach in her journals. Her inspiration is her morning routine of coffee, a newspaper, and reflecting on the upcoming day. Hear Judith’s ArtTalk on her work, Tuesday, July 21 at 6:00 p.m. at The Art Studio. Laura’s current exhibition is a combination of new work in clay and painting. Functional vessels are layered with geometric patterning and calligraphic brush strokes. Dream Big! Dream in Color! This is how Laura approaches all her work. At the Art Studio Gallery. Artist Receptions: During ArtWalk, Thursday, July 23, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.; and during Super ArtWalk, Saturday, August 8, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. MON JUL 20 – MON JUL 27 Megan Craver: “Split Agriculture” Living in Colorado has an extremely short growing season. Last year the valley experienced only one hundred and thirty days between frosts. This short growth time is special. Megan’s current exhibition depicts farming, gardening, and the Colorado landscape. Many of the paintings incorporate the figure manipulating the landscape. There are also a few paintings that portray the barren winter to juxtapose the idea of growth. The works on display are oil and acrylic painted on plexi-glass, panel or canvas with hand-made frames. At the Piper Gallery. MON JUL 27 – MON AUG 3 Kathryn Barry: “Summer in Crested Butte” Kathryn Barry, aka Taffy, and her husband, Gary, have been spending summers in Colorado for the past 12 years, seven of them in beautiful Crested Butte. She is drawn to the area for the scenery, topography, flora and fauna that can be not only seen, but experienced while strolling, dancing, hiking, biking and painting. She has met wonderful friends to share and enhance these experiences. Kathryn takes great pleasure in trying to capture the magic of the area through the medium of oil paintings. She hopes that you will join her at her exhibit at the Piper Gallery to celebrate another wonderful summer in Crested Butte! At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: Thursday, July 30, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. MON AUG 3 – TUE AUG 18 Tierney Miller: “Moments Between” As a departure from her representational work, “Moments Between” is a select group of Tierney M. Miller’s recent Lyrical Abstracts and Color Field paintings. Light, color and movement fill the atmosphere of Miller’s work as she tackles her canvases boldly, directly and with intellectual vigor. The artist invites us to slow down and take a closer look at our surroundings, seeing their nuances and their beauty, to let go of “what’s next” in life, and, if

TUE JUN 2 – SUN JUL 12 Bailey Hosier & Laura Elm: “Life’s Little Intricacies” only for an instant, embrace “the now.” “Moments” calls into existence visual experiences — amplifying glimpses of fleeting impressions and emotions taken from the artist’s life experiences and travels translated into paint on canvas. Each of her works captures not only a visual interpretation, but includes the spiritual nature of a moment in time. Though outwardly simple and bold, Miller’s “Moments Between” is full of complexities. As one looks at the work, underlying subtleties emerge engaging the viewer in a visceral challenge to respond. The result is a group of deeply satisfying paintings. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: Thursday, August 6, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. TUE AUG 18 – MON AUG 31 Jennifer Jung: “Water, Earth & Sky” Oil landscape artist Jennifer Jung is honored to present her paintings of “Water, Earth, and Sky” to the Piper Gallery. Devoted to a style that is delicate, soft and realistic, she displays landscapes that capture the variety and beauty of this area. With compositions of expansive or intimate scenes, she loves to paint the fleeting moments of nature in the mountains — the dawn or twilight, the changing weather, reflections of the sky and trees. Her desire is to have an effect on the viewer with tranquil elegant landscapes that reveal the interplay of the three elements of water, earth and sky. At the Piper Gallery. If you don’t belong — what is it you long for most? What do you use in your life to ground you? How do you thrive as an outsider? This exhibit uses images to explore the way in which refugees have reconceptualized the nature of belonging. Through photos taken in various parts of the world, it highlights the way in which people survive and adapt and re-establish their lives within the paradox of the refugee condition — a permanent state of limbo. The photographer’s own journey is also documented through places and communities where she certainly did not belong, but in which she has found the greatest sense of self and connection to others. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: Saturday, September 5, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. ArtTalk by the artist following 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. MON SEP 14 – MON SEP 28 Becky Chappell: “The Great Outdoors” This show focuses on the light and color of the captivating outdoors from Becky Chappell’s hikes, walks and travels. It features not only the wondrous beauty of the Crested Butte area, but also other places that have their own unique beauty. The show includes many mediums including pastel, watercolor, and acrylic. NEW ARTS CENTER
New Center Building
THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS CONTINUES TO GROW with each passing year. In 2014 over 41,000 art lovers of all disciplines were served by The Center — attending concerts, dance and visual arts classes, film showings, wine seminars and culinary events. That’s a 26% increase from the previous year. The Crested Butte Dance Collective tripled their class offerings. Numbers of attendees to Art Studio classes and Crested Butte Film Festival events doubled in each realm. The Crested Butte Wine & Food Festival continues to grow, adding over 150 wine enthusiasts to its roster last year. The Center’s facilities must also grow to meet the demand on the arts services being provided. A plan is under way to remove the current 8,000 square foot Center for the Arts building to be replaced with a new building occupying 38,000 square feet. The goal is to break ground on a new building in May 2016 and to open the doors of a new Center in summer 2017. The Center for the Arts is the cultural hub of Crested Butte, the place where our community comes together. Please join us in making this building a reality for our neighbors, families, friends and visitors.
“The Center for the Arts is the ‘Front Porch’ to Crested Butte”
Theatre Improvements
Maintaining Community
Keep up with the technology of the times and make the experience even better. • The 300 seat, ADA compliant theater maintains The Center’s renowned intimate experience while extra seats allow for bigger acts and lower price points • Express yourself! Auditorium floor with removable chairs allows for greater freestyle dancing capabilities at concerts while a balcony offers seating for those who desire • State-of-the-art lighting, sound and visual equipment • The entire building will be energy efficient HVAC and LEED certified
Providing a space for meetings, classes and other gatherings is a crucial role The Center plays and a proven need in the community. Additionally, it is important to remember that a community includes children, and provide opportunities for them as well • Several multipurpose community spaces • 3,500 square feet for the Trailhead Children’s Museum with outdoor music garden
Rehearsal Space Rehearsals occupy 63% of the current Center, with fewer other options in the community. One of the major features of the new building is substantial additional rehearsal space to accommodate this need. • Three dedicated dance studios for the Crested Butte School of Dance and the Crested Butte Dance Collective • A music rehearsal room for use by the Crested Butte Community School for instruction and lessons
NEW ARTS CENTER
Key Features of the New Facility
Visual Arts While the theatre of The Center sets the stage for performances, it is in the Art Studio classes and Piper Gallery where students and budding artists can pursue their own creative explorations. • Three times the space for Visual Arts programs and a Clay Studio which have seen a doubling in attendance in one year • Enlarged Piper Gallery on the ground floor with improved natural light and outdoor patio access
Culinary & Vintner Arts The Crested Butte Wine & Food Festival and Tour de Forks events prove a desire to delve into the creative world of food and wine. • A catering kitchen for large events, Piper Gallery receptions and culinary demonstrations and classes
Recent Developments • Local builder, Crockett Farnell from Black Dragon Development, is the building Project Manager. His accolades include recently completing the Gothic Community Center for Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. • Spring held many community, staff and Town Council discussions to find the best location for the new building in relationship to the Town Park and the many park amenities surrounding The Center. The newly approved building site is directly north of the existing building, allowing The Center to continue operations during construction for all the various programs and rentals the current structure supports. Additionally, all parks will remain in their present locations while the pavilion and playground amenities will be moved just slightly.
Fundraising Updates • We are seeking a significant financial commitment from the Town of Crested Butte with a goal of having it solidified in early summer. • Over 100 conversations with Center supporters have yielded a total of $3 million raised to date. • This summer will be critical for our fundraising efforts and we hope that you will consider making a significant financial investment to our new building. To find out more or to contribute contact Executive Director Jenny Birnie at (970) 349–7487, ext. 2 or jenny@crestedbuttearts.org.

SUPPORT THE CENTER
There are many ways to support the Center!
AS THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS continues to grow programs in order to meet the needs of our diverse community and prepare for a facility expansion, we appreciate support at a variety of different levels. Operating The Center as an affordable community facility means that we must rely on contributions and fundraising for about two-thirds of our budget. We offer special fundraising groups to support The Center’s mission of offering engaging opportunities and educational experiences to enrich and expand the life of our community as well as a variety of volunteer opportunities. For more information on any of these volunteer or donation opportunities please contact Executive Director Jenny Birnie at (970) 349–7487, ext. 2. Donations may also be made through the Center’s website at www.crestedbuttearts.org.

Volunteer There are many ways to help The Center such as setting up for events, taking tickets, door security, welcoming visitors, delivering brochures, putting up posters, helping with social media, cataloging photographs and much more. If you would like to become a part of the vibrancy of The Center, consider volunteering your time. Ticket and workshop trades may be available in some instances.
Center Circle For The Center’s 15th anniversary season in 2003, the first group of Center Circle members made a commitment to make the first Winter Season happen. The membership in this group remains strong, providing the funds that enable us to plan early for the next Winter Season and to expand our programming. Center Circle members make a financial commitment to bring extraordinary artists to Crested Butte year round.
Founders’ Club The Founders’ Club plays a key leadership role in providing the Center for the Arts with a solid foundation for growing and sustaining high quality and progressive programs. They ensure the continuation of The Centers original vision — to be responsive to the needs of the community. By making a financial contribution, the Founders’ Club supports programs in the following areas: visual arts, adult education, children and youth programs, the Piper Gallery and world events and cultural diversity.

The Board of Directors plays a critical role in the success of the Center for the Arts. Their primary responsibility is to fulfill and promote the mission of the Center through leadership and sharing of expertise. This group of dedicated individuals sets policy, ensures resources, fundraises and attends regular board and committee meetings. Focusing on the goals of: Strategic Resource Development; Remarkable Human Resources; Extraordinary Mission Delivery; and Creating a Best-in-Class Facility, each board member serves as an ambassador in the community — instilling their passion for the arts by encouraging the community to get involved!
Support for Fundraising Events Our vital volunteers help fundraise over a third of the Center’s budget not only through Tour de Forks but also through a variety of auctions, feasts and private music events as well as the Crested Butte Wine & Food Festival. Volunteers help execute signature Center fundraisers, host events in their homes and provide other meaningful support. As a volunteer you experience wonderful opportunities to get to know new people, learn more about The Center, and truly help in a meaningful way towards a worthy cause.
