SAT DEC 30 The Lao Tizer Band Contemporary jazz group, The Lao Tizer Band, is driven by an explosive mix of jazz, rock, classical, jam band, Afro Cuban and world rhythms. Rising to the top of the world-fusion genre, this scintillating five-piece, multi-cultural band creates dynamic instrumental music rich with fresh melodic, harmonic and improvisational possibilities. Their intensity, expansive arrangements and exciting soloing won them a nomination for “Jazz Group of the Year,” while band leader Lao Tizer was nominated as “Best New Jazz Artist.” 6:00 p.m. Early Bird through 12/23: $35. FRI JAN 5 Jackson Melnick & His Band THU DEC 28 An Evening with Trout Steak Revival Since winning the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, Trout Steak Revival has skyrocketed through a steady stream of awards and accolades including being named by Westword as “Best Bluegrass Band” in 2016 and 2017 and nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2016 “Momentum Band of the Year.” They blend folk, indie, bluegrass and roots into their own style of Americana evoking a down-toearth sound with a wholesome message. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 12/22: $20. Singer-songwriter Jackson Melnick was raised in Crested Butte. Now performing as Jack Gwydion, his music speaks to the modern day and timeless mysteries of the heart with Dylan-esque lyrics and a seriousness that exhibits a power far beyond his years. His debut LP, At the Foot of Heart’s Mystery, has a warm, vintage feel, reconciling the city and the forest, the road and the home, questions on the mind of anyone living in the modern world with an ancient soul. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 12/29: $15. SAT JAN 20 The Victor Wooten Trio Revolutionary bassist Victor Wooten is a master of intricate jazz melodies, R&B arrangements and groove-inducing funk. A groundbreaking innovator, he employs unconventional drum licks, solos, blazing percussive chops, and wild explorations of melody, nuance and phrasing to his bass. As a founding member of Béla Fleck & the Flecktones he won five Grammy Awards, has been honored three times by Bass Player magazine as “Player of the Year,” and is included in Rolling Stone’s “Top 10 Bassists of All Time.” Ages 13 and up. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 1/13: $40. FRI FEB 2 Head for the Hills Rooted in the tradition of bluegrass while actively reshaping its definition, Colorado-based Head for the Hills defies expectation in the worlds of progressive acoustic and modern roots. Their neonoir style incorporates rock, jazz, hip hop, world and folk, stitching together cutting edge songs that bridge the divide between past and future acoustic music. Venturing into a myriad of sonic landscapes, their multifarious and improvisational music has quadruple-crowned them “Best Bluegrass in Colorado.” Ages 13 and up. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 1/26: $20. SUN FEB 11 Zoso Experience the golden era of rock and roll legends Led Zeppelin. Zoso is the longest tenured, most critically acclaimed tribute band of one of the most influential musical powerhouses in rock history. Chris Robinson boasts a long, historic and seismic career as one of rock music’s most prolific and successful songwriters and frontmen. The band brings shimmering acid-Americana to the world, firmly establishing CRB as the new standardbearers of the psychedelic roots torch. Their live shows reel with freewheeling improvisational chemistry, an expansive sense of space and texture, dense sonic worlds and good ole’ Saturday night boogie. An Evening with
Engaging in “live phrase sampling” or “looping,” Keller Williams uses an armory of technical toys to create samples on stage, then layers them on top of one another. The end result is a hybrid of alternative folk and groovy electronic, a genre Keller calls “acoustic dance music” or “ADM.” Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, and singing solo, Keller crosses boundaries of rock, jazz, funk and bluegrass. With no two shows ever alike, and nothing pre-recorded, his unpredictable performances are the stuff of legend. Ages 18 and up. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 3/1: $45. Regular: $40

The Father of Newgrass and King of Telluride, legendary mandolin master Sam Bush has long since established himself as bluegrass royalty. His stylistic innovations have changed the course of bluegrass and roots music alike. The sheer ferocity of his playing and the brilliant suppleness, ease and warmth of his vocals have earned him a suite of honors including a “Lifetime Achievement” from the Americana Music Association; four International Bluegrass Music Association “Mandolin Player of the Year” awards; and three Grammys heralding talents from best album to best performance. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 3/7: $60. Southern blues-rock guitar wizard, vocalist and songwriter Tinsley Ellis is among the blues world’s most revered, respected and well-travelled. With his arsenal of molten licks, melodic riffs and rousing, intense solos, he’s a guitarist’s guitarist, taking his cues from greats like B.B. King and The Allman Brothers, while sharing the stage with legends and contemporaries from Buddy Guy to Widespread Panic. He won “Rock / Blues Album of the Year” from Blues Blast Magazine. Multi-instrumentalist quintet Elephant Revival mesmerizes with their earthy rhythms, eclectic influences, and rich instrumental brews of rootsy Americana, Celtic, gypsy and folk. Here you find the moan of the blues, the lyricism of the folk ballad, the elegant bones of the chamber piece, the bluegrass punch. As a Rocky Mountain ensemble Nature is both a real and metaphorical touchstone in Elephant Revival’s work, their commitment to community and the environment evident at the core. FRI MAR 30 Mark Rapp Group Distinguished jazz trumpeter Mark Rapp approaches his craft with adventure and risk. A superb interpreter of the standard principles of jazz, he styles his compositions with a variety of flavors and formats, pioneering compelling grooves and sultry nuances with unordinary approaches and a seemingly endless array of ideas. A composer, arranger, didgeridoo player, recording and touring artist, he has earned a spot as “Top Emerging Trumpeter” from DownBeat Magazine; been awarded “Artist of the Year” by Jasper Magazine; and spotlighted on NPR. 7:00 p.m. Early Bird through 3/23: $20. THU DEC 21 Crown Heights This is the true story of Colin Warner who was wrongfully convicted of murder and spent 20 years in prison, and how his best friend, Carl King, devoted his life to proving Colin’s innocence. Elle-Marja, 14, is a reindeer-breeding Sámi girl — an indigenous, Scandinavian race that has been the victim of ethnic bigotry and systemic cultural suppression in Norway, Sweden and other Nordic countries. Taken from her home and sent to a state school, as she is exposed to the racism of the 1930’s and race biology examinations in her classroom, she starts dreaming of another life. To achieve it, she has to become someone else and break all ties with her family and culture. Told in flashback, Sami Blood is a beautiful, haunting film, anchored by a startlingly accomplished lead performance. Starring Lene Cecilia Sparrok and Mia Erika Sparrok. MON MAY 21 Dirtbag: The Legend of Fred Beckey Fred Beckey is a towering figure whose innumerable first ascents cemented his legacy as one of the greatest climbers of all time. Dirtbag: The Legend of Fred Beckey looks back at this singular life, following the nonagenarian climber over the last decade as he’s slowed but never stopped doing what he loves most. Beckey, like so many people of great accomplishment, is a controversial figure, having alienated fellow climbers by stealing their routes (and even their girlfriends). While the film delves into those peccadilloes, it is ultimately an affectionate portrait of a remarkable man in the sunset of his career. Running time: 95 minutes. 7:00 p.m. $10

Hollandaise, best known with Eggs Benedict, also goes well with asparagus. Bechamel, a traditional white sauce, is perfect for lasagna, and can be used to create a sauce mornay, used in macaroni and cheese or potatoes au gratin. Espagnole, a brown gravy, is the base for classic demi-glace. Court-bouillon is a poaching liquid with wide application.
