12/30 The Delta Saints
12/21 Blackalicious Considered lords of the West Coast Underground, Blackalicious is an American hip hop duo from Sacramento, California made up of rapper Gift of Gab (born Tim Parker) and DJ / producer Chief Xcel (born Xavier Mosley). Gift of Gab, known as hip hop’s premier lyricist, flashes intellectually bent tongue-twisting, multisyllabic, and complex rhymes rife with allusion and metaphor, while Chief Xcel’s classic, funky beats hold down the groove. Blackalicious favors what hip-hoppers call the “positive tip” where lyrics are spiritual and uplifting rather than violent or misogynous. Like a lot of experimental alternative rappers, Blackalicious can be quirky and eccentric. Yet, for them, spirituality is a big part of the group’s music. They treat their rhymes not only as a piece of poetry, but as a play with the aesthetics of language in ways that represent the voice as a unique instrument in and of itself. 9:00 p.m. $15 early bird / $20 week of.

There is something sinisterly devout about the Delta Saints bayou rock — a dirty, grinding roots revival harnessing the brackish delta current into something gripping and bold. Alternating between raucous melodies and slow-burning odes to the devil, Ben Ringel (vocals / dobro), Dylan Fitch (guitar), David Supica (bass), and Ben Azzi (drums) haunt the stage with searing harmonica, howling vocals, swaggering bass lines and blazing guitar riffs, eerily punctuated with cacophonous New Orleans-inspired choruses. The Delta Saints are blooming into their musical career not as a pretty flower might, but more like a feral thunderhead. First finding their common ground as old-world-loving, good-bourbonswilling musicians in Nashville, their tours now include festivals such as Wakarusa, juke joints such as the House of Blues, and live shows from L.A. to Sweden, supporting the likes of Robert Randolph and the Family Band. The music beckons, commands, sways and magnetizes you through irreverent briny narratives and a sometimes dark emotional landscape that makes you dance all the harder. 8:00 p.m. $10 early bird / $15 week of.
1/2 Shook Twins Whimsical, enchanting and amusing, the Shook Twins bring an alluring Alice in Wonderland kind of magical strangeness to the indie folk-pop scene. Originally from Sandpoint, Idaho and now hailing from Portland, Oregon, the identical twins Katelyn and Laurie Shook evoke both angelic and mischievous qualities through their layered acoustic and electric instrumentation. Their ethereal sibling harmonies lilt over quirky tales from imagined superpowers to a befriended chicken named Rose, while their eclectic range in instrumentation includes banjo, guitar, electric and upright bass, mandolin, electric guitar, electronic drums, beatbox, glockenspiel, ukulele, banjo drumming and their signature golden egg. The unconventional sound becomes an inventive blend of folk, roots, groove and soul. Known
for their joyous live performances, the Shook Twins have shared the stage with artists including David Grisman, Carolina Chocolate Drops, JJ Grey and MoFro, The Indigo Girls, Crooked Still, and Elephant Revival. 8:00 p.m. $15.

1/10 Willy Porter
1/10 Willy Porter Lauded by musicians and music aficionados as a “maverick” and “genius” on the six-string guitar, Willy Porter brings the soul, swing and edge of the blues into a singer-songwriter’s consciousness. His lyrical wordsmithing wields knife-edge precision on his social commentary, straddling the delicate balance of universal messages told through ultimately personal tales. Quickly apparent is his depth, range and jaw dropping dexterity. Each well-rendered tale is driven with spit-fire percussive guitar strumming and fiery color chord picking. His music incorporates the flavors of New Orleans, Chicago and Boston as well as the styles of Paul McCartney, the Band, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. The songs on his eight albums sometimes drip with honey, other times they blaze across your consciousness, raw and stripped. A musician’s musician, Willy is also a consummate performer, witty and captivating, and is back on the Center stage by popular demand. If you had the bad fortune to miss his last show in Crested Butte, don’t repeat the same mistake twice. 8:00 p.m. $15 early bird / $20 week of.

1/25 Head for the Hills Rooted in the tradition of bluegrass, Head for the Hills is more accurately described as progressive acoustic / modern roots. Their neo-noir style pulls in influences of indie rock, jazz, hip hop, world and folk to stitch together fiery and precise songs of meta-fictional sea shanties, pop-infused newgrass murder ballads, and urbane lyricism with both twang and punch. Called “cutting edge” by their 2010 album producer, Drew Emmitt, the multifarious and improvisational music of Head for the Hills is forward-thinking, venturing into a myriad of sonic landscapes packing the house from their debut venue of Mishawaka to festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass and Wakarusa. Featuring Adam Kinghorn (guitar / vocals), Joe Lessard (violin / vocals), Matt Loewen (upright bass / vocals), and Mike Chappell (acoustic and electric mandolin), Head for the Hills has played with notables from David Grisman to Sam Bush and The Flaming Lips to Cake and is actively reshaping the definition of the genre. 8:00 p.m. $15 early bird / $18 week of.
2/9 Royal Southern Brotherhood In the South, where music is religion, two rock ‘n’ roll bloodlines tower above all others. In the saloon bars from Mississippi to Maryland, mere mention of the Allman and Neville Brothers casts a magic spell. Enter the iconic Cyril Neville — poet, philosopher and percussion master — the youngest of the four immortal Neville Brothers giving rise to both his family band as well as The Meters. Add Devon Allman on guitar, son of Gregg Allman, who has relented to his Southern heritage of soul-drenched blues-rock, bending it to be smooth, savage or seismic and always at fullthrottle. Winner of 2010’s Blues Music Award for “Song of the Year,” guitarist Mike Zito provides the counterpoint to his wingman’s rocking tendencies. The hip-shaking groove is bassist Charlie Wooton (who has played with the Woods Brothers) and drummer Yonrico Scott (who has hit the skins for the Derek Trucks Band). The result is tumbling three-part harmonies, hickory-smoked guitar riffs and two family styles stewing together in one super-spicy gumbo. 8:00 p.m. $15 early bird / $20 week of.

2/12–2/13 Leftover Salmon
2/12–2/13 Leftover Salmon Festivaaaal! The band is back. After an eightyear hiatus and the release of Aquatic Hitchhiker in 2012 that explores new sonic territory and is one of the best Americana albums of the year, Leftover Salmon swims back to its ancestral waters of Crested Butte, home of their first ever show. Formed in Boulder, Colorado in 1989, Leftover Salmon was one of the first bluegrass bands to add drums and tour rock & roll bars, making them a pillar of the jam band scene and unwitting architects of the jam grass genre. Brandishing both acoustic and electric guitar, bass and banjo they are: Vince Herman (guitar, mandolin); Drew Emmitt (mandolin, guitar, mandola, fiddle); Andy Thorn (banjo, National guitar); Greg Garrison (bass, guitar); Jose Martinez (drums, percussion). “This is one fish that has only gotten better with age. Fiery solos and elements of country, bluegrass, jazz and jam rock combine into a heady mix of feelgood tunes — and some that carry a hefty message, as well,” says CMT. Looking back over the past 25 years, the impact of Leftover Salmon is impossible to deny. 8:00 p.m. $30 early bird / $35 week of.
2/16 Mysto the Magi

His talent has won him awards such as Best Stage Magician and Best Close up Magician. Come be Mysto-fied! 4:00 p.m. $12 (adults), $8 (kids 12 & under), $25 Family Pack (1 Adult + 2 Kids).
2/19 The Duhks One of the most musically adventurous groups to detonate from the roots scene in the past decade, this Canadian acoustic band romps through soul, gospel, North American folk, Brazilian samba, old-time country, string-band, zydeco, jazz, Irish dance, and even punk, all energetically delivered with wild-eyed invention and spine-rattling groove. Hailed by The New York Times as artists at the forefront of the neo-folk movement, The Duhks blend these seemingly disparate genres into an irresistible ethnic stew that is simultaneously hauntingly traditional and innovatively modern. Having won the Juno Award for Best Roots & Traditional Album and a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album, The Duhks have earned admirers as diverse as David Crosby, Dolly Parton and Doc Watson. The Duhks are Sarah Dugas (vocals), Christian Dugas (percussion), Jordan McConnell (guitar), Leonard Podolak (banjo) and Duncan Wickel (violin). 8:00 p.m. $20.

3/9 Robert Randolph and the Family Band Robert Randolph’s unprecedented prowess on the pedal steel guitar has Rolling Stone calling him one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” Rising from his roots of playing in the Church of God where his art is deemed “sacred steel,” the virtuoso has now secularly captured the praise of literal legends such as Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and Santana, playing with them on stage and in 3/9 Robert Randolph and the Family Band the studio. While the iconic bending chords and complex riffs of the “lap steel” have enlivened his church since the 1920’s, it is Robert Randolph and the Family Band who have charged the musical style and instrumentation to the forefront of modern musical culture. Their distinctive mix of rock, funk, and rhythm & blues has earned them a rapturous response from a fervent, international audience. Their live shows explode with joy, freedom and energy, with Robert mastering the most complex instrument in the world and emitting a unique voice that is equal parts street-corner church and Bonnaroo. Dancing is mandatory — your body will demand it — as proven in unforgettable performances from festivals such as New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Austin City Limits, and Bonnaroo. The unique chemistry of the Family Band includes Robert’s actual family members Marcus Randolph (drums), Danyel Morgan (bass) and Lenesha Randolph (vocals) joined by Brett Haas (guitar). 3/19 Patty Larkin The Boston Globe calls her “an uncommonly articulate guitarist.” The New York Times hails her as “a mood-shaper,” comparing her to the best of Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams. Patty Larkin is not only a virtuosic slide guitarist, but also an imaginative and versatile vocalist, and riveting performer. Her newest compositions are richly contemplative tracks about solitude and togetherness, open vistas and spiritual quests. Her alto voice can be breathy and confiding, or tinged with the blues, delicate yet expressive. Artful and forward-minded songs probe her listeners to ask lofty questions, then bring them down to earth with gentle ache and sweet joy. A descendent from a long line of Irish American singers and taletellers, Patty is additionally armed with an English major and studies of jazz guitar at Berklee College of Music. Her over 25-year career has traveled from coffeehouses in Oregon and San Francisco to busking on the streets of Cambridge. 3/22 Christopher O‘Riley
3/22 Christopher O’Riley From his groundbreaking transcriptions of Radiohead’s True Love Waits album (which garnered the only four-star review ever given by Rolling Stone Magazine to a classical pianist), to powerful interpretations of repertoire and contemporary, Christopher O’Riley has redefined the possibilities of classical music. As a crossover artist he has found a tantalizing way to bridge pop and classical, spanning styles from Rachmaninoff, Beethoven and Chopin to Radiohead, Nirvana and Pink Floyd. His adaptations, Lisztian in scope and technical demands, are ingenious considering the harmonic intrigue of the originals, and exquisitely laced with an otherworldly elegance. Christopher has served as the host of the popular NPR music program From the Top for the past 10 years, has appeared with the philharmonic orchestras of Los Angeles, New York, Moscow and the Royal Philharmonic in London, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the symphonies of Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Baltimore, Philadelphia and San Francisco. He has traveled the globe from London to Paris to Berlin performing recitals and won awards in the Leeds, Van Cliburn, Busoni and Montreal competitions. 8:00 p.m. $25 early bird / $30 week of.

3/25 Eilen Jewell
WINTER SEASON
Country-flavored and blues-infused, Boston-based Eilen Jewell is a smart cookie with a heart of burnished gold and enough stories to keep even the rowdiest crowd hanging on her every word. Deemed the “Queen of the Minor Key” (with her latest album titled just that) her songs shed a haunting light on long shadows and dark corners. Its denizens seek refuge in padded rooms, abandoned automobiles and strong spirits. They defend their territory by any means necessary — weird voodoo, sawed-off shotguns, broken bottles. There is a gritty texture to her, a moody film noir atmosphere. Drawing on a connoisseur’s love of roots music and a writer’s eye for detail, Jewell fashions her musical vignettes with impressive economy. Each turn of phrase and chord change is executed with an élan that belies the measured precision behind it. With smoky vocals reminiscent of a cross between Billie Holida and Neko Case, and swinging rhythms, she sashays between jazz, country-gospel and box-car soul. The Boston Globe calls her “emotionally raw and riveting.” 8:00 p.m. $15 early bird / $20 week of.
3/29 Frequent Flyers® Called “amazing, transformational, stupendous, and eye-popping” the Frequent Flyers® spellbind with a stunning blend of modern and aerial dance, wowing you on a mesmerizing mix of suspended apparatus from silks to rope to lyra, even including stilts. Their showcases run the gamut from the Swing era to comic book heroes to vampires. They have hung from site-specific apparatus on buildings and invented their own. Artistic Director Nancy Smith has received top honors such as the Colorado Dance Alliance Cutting Edge Award and the Arts Innovation Award for Excellence in Dance. “Finely skilled dancers lift off the stage with ghostly grace and an otherworldly presence redefines the restrictions of a two-dimensional dance form. It opens up the doors of perception, both for the dancer and the spectator.” — The Boulder Weekly. 8:00 p.m. Adults: $25 early bird / $30 week of; Students (18 & under): $15 early bird / $20 week of. 4/4 Telluride Theatre Burlesque Sexy, funny, daring and delightfully scandalous, the Telluride Theatre brings its sellout Burlesque Show to Crested Butte. It was the Victorian Burlesque of London from the 1830’s to the 1890’s that inspired the famed American Burlesque. Dripping with music, ribald comedy sketches, and an ever-growing showing of skin, early 20th century vaudeville circuits of Burlesque were soon established 4/4 Telluride Theatre creating a debut venue for actresses such as Burlesque Fanny Brice and Mae West. The Prohibition Era marked the snuffing of the uninhibited atmosphere. Today’s Neo-Burlesque kicked off in New York and Los Angeles with a cult following in the 1990’s, full of nostalgia for the historic spectacle, focusing on the self-expression of the performer and the art of the tease. Telluride Theatre’s 2014 Burlesque Show focuses on the Tarot. Each act represents a different card in the deck — mysterious, sensual and telling. Let the women of Telluride Burlesque seduce you with a show of all varieties of Burlesque, plenty of pasties, boylesque, and of course — a lap full of surprises. 9:00 p.m. $20.

3/20 Muscle Shoals
3/20 Muscle Shoals Head down to the Bayou to learn about this magical music town and the sound that emanated from there, featuring Bono, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Located alongside the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals, Alabama is the unlikely breeding ground for some of America’s most creative and defiant music. Under the spiritual influence of the “Singing River,” as Native Americans call it, the music of Muscle Shoals has helped create some of the most important and resonant songs of all time. At its heart is Rick Hall who founded FAME Studios. Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, Hall brought black and white together in Alabama’s cauldron of racial hostility to create music for the generations. He is responsible for creating the “Muscle Shoals Sound” and The Swampers, the house band at FAME that eventually left to start their own successful studio, known as Muscle Shoals Sound. Greg Allman, Bono, Clarence Carter, Mick Jagger, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge and others bear witness to Muscle Shoals’ magnetism, mystery and why it remains influential today. 7:00 p.m. $10.
Laura Dekker knew more about herself at the age of 13 than most of us will learn over a lifetime. At that age, she was already fighting the government of her native Holland for the right to sail around the world — solo. With support from her non-traditional family (she was born on a boat in New Zealand and traveled by sea with her now-divorced parents for the first five years of her life), she won the battle and set sail on a grand adventure a year later at age 14. Her dream was “to be the youngest ever to sail around the world alone,” she sought to experience the remote and wonderful corners of the planet on her own. Much of this brilliant documentary captures Dekker’s own words with video she shot during the journey. But director Jillian Schlesinger weaves it together with her own footage, media reports and charming animation to tell the story of this precocious and lovely young woman, whose fascinating life has only just begun. 7:00 p.m. $10.
5/15 Spinning Plates A documentary about three extraordinary restaurants and the incredible people who bring them to life. A world-renowned chef competes for the ultimate restaurant prize in Chicago, while privately battling a lifethreatening condition. A 150-year-old restaurant in Iowa is still standing only because of an unbreakable bond with the community. And a fledgling Mexican restaurant in Tucson struggles as its owners risk everything to survive and provide for their young daughter. Their unforgettable stories of family, legacy, passion and survival come together to reveal how meaningful food can be. Please see www.cbfilmfest.org for film location details. 7:00 p.m. $10.

The Piper Gallery is an open gallery that serves as a vibrant home for local artists to display their work exclusively and affordably while helping to expand their careers. 11/1/13–1/3/14 Allan Ivy: “Gypsy Portraits”
Local professional photographer and owner of the Open Your Eyes Gallery in Gunnison, Allan Ivy exhibits a special show of portraits of the Romany and Gypsy people of the Appleby Horse Fair in Westmoreland, England. Appleby is the largest traditional horse fair of its kind in the world, established by Charter under the reign of James II in 1685. It has been an annual event since that time and is one of the largest remaining gatherings of Romany and Gypsy people. From 2004 to 2007 Allan gained coveted entry to the Appleby camp on four separate occasions, befriending many of the travelers who arrive in traditional horse 11/1/13–1/3/14 Allan Ivy: “Gypsy Portraits” drawn wagons. The magnificent results are intimate and vivid portraits of the Gypsy and Romany people, spectacular depictions of horse washing, and a grand pictorial preservation of one of Britain’s great traditions.
1/6–1/17 Crested Butte Community School: “Winter Art Show” Crested Butte Community School art students of local artist and teacher, Ben McLoughlin, display their talents in sculpture, drawing, painting, mosaics, ceramics, and photography. The pieces serve as representative icons of their first semester of class. For these 6–12 graders, the Piper Gallery serves as a place to learn how to hang their work, label it, and work within a space as well as be exposed to the elevated experience of an art opening. As a professional gallery space, it allows the students to see their work in an entirely different way. Come support the young artists of the community. Artist Reception: Thursday, January 9, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Free
2/1–2/12 Joseph Newton: “Did You Know…” Joseph Newton has been deaf most of his life. This experience has taught him to learn by what he sees. He considers the camera a tool in which he document time and space. The image can be simultaneously beautiful and ugly, what was new and shiny one day might be worn and decomposed the next, but each image has a speech to make. His abstract work makes each image a mystery. He uses each print as a painting, a sculpture, or a storybook, using the imagination of the viewer’s eye. The finished product is the quality of contrast, texture and color that draws the viewer into an experience rather than a fleeting expression. Artist Reception: Tuesday, February 4, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Free

3/17–3/30 Kathy Amen: “All the Pretty Horses & Things”
Kathy Amen’s magically colored silk paintings reflect her imagination and love for horses and all creatures of the earth. She receives inspiration through the environment, live subjects, photos, memories and spirit. Her paintings begin with a detailed drawing that is transferred to a finely stretched piece of silk, then painted with wonderful detail and artistry using the French serti technique of gutta, dyes and paints, creating a unique and beautiful piece of collectible art. Kathy’s work is contemporary yet whimsical with a message that speaks to each individual viewer. Artist Reception: Thursday, March 20, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Free
4/3 Stepping Stones: “Spring Art Show & Performances” Come see the entire Center recreated by the children of Stepping Stones. Each child is represented with a poster board of up to 12 past pieces, complete with author interviews (for, ahem, “professional” bios). Then revel in performances by budding actors from three to five years. Songs, dances, and even such productions as the “Three Piggie Opera” have lit the Center stage with sets all built by the children. Artist Reception: Thursday, April 3, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Free

Dawn to Dusk Golf Challenge 100 Holes of Golf?!?!?! Yes! Due to its continued outstanding success, the 100 hole survivor golf challenge returns as the new signature fundraising event! Join other zany golfers to play 100 holes of golf from dawn to dusk. It’s a fabulous day on the links where you will stun yourself at your athletic prowess, endurance and fortitude. How many of your friends can say they’ve played 10 holes of golf in one day? It will be a privilege to say you survived (plus, it’s really fun)! Save the date for Monday, August 25, 2014!
