25 Years of Creativity, Inspiration & Collaboration

THERE IS NO OTHER TIME LIKE SUMMER that truly demonstrates the Center for the Art’s evolution as a community gathering place.

The free summer Alpenglow concert series is one of the most perfect expressions of the Center’s goal of art for everyone. Every Monday evening an entire community, guests and all, convene on the lawn to shake the worries and cares away.

Through collaboration creativity blossoms and there are few places where this is more evident than in the Center’s partnerships with the Crested Butte Dance Collective and Art Studio. From fire spinning with the Dance Collective to plein air watercolor workshops with the Art Studio, you have the opportunity to fully engage your creativity. Through new collaborations with the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival and the Crested Butte Arts Festival, you’ll find artistic opportunities even beyond our four walls.

The Piper Gallery is the only public space in town where an artist may turn the spotlight on their art alone. Affordable and open to all, artists further their careers by garnering valuable experience and exposure in displaying their work. Oils, photography, multimedia, and acrylics are just some of the talent this summer.

This summer’s concerts range from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Richie Furay, to country smash hit artist Pat Green, to the funk-driven percussion and world beat of Eufórquestra. Our facility also hosts the Crested Butte Music Festival, Crested Butte School of Dance-Dansummer, Public Policy Forum, Crested Butte Mountain Theatre, and Crested Butte Film Festival in their community events.

No matter what your fancy, everyone can find a home for their creativity in the Center. Join us this summer to celebrate our long history of making and sharing art together.

Musical legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Richie Furay is the formidable writer, guitarist and vocalist of the pivotal rock group Buffalo Springfield. With famous members such as Stephen Stills and Neil Young, they laid the groundwork for the folk-rock and county-rock genres that took root in the 70’s, serving as the foundational precursor to artists such as the Eagles and Jackson Brown. 6:30 p.m. General seating is free. VIP Private Seating with appetizers, cash bar and private bathrooms $100 or $200 when combined with the Tour de Forks private Meet and Greet event on July 5.

Founder of Liz Claiborne Accessories, celebrated fashion designer and philanthropist Nina McLemore speaks on “Women and Philanthropy.” Nina served as Chair of the Center for Women’s Business Research and Fashion Group International and is a Founding Member of the Committee of 200, Women Corporate Directors. She founded the Nina McLemore Collection in 2003 of designer clothing for executive women and community professionals. Following her talk will be a trunk show of some of the favorites from her collection with 20% of the proceeds being contributed to the Center. 4:00 p.m. Free.

9/8 Grant Farm

Come celebrate the gastronomic knowledge and edible prowess of local chefs at the culinary game show of Crested Butte. With limited groceries, only basic cooking implements, and a one hour time limit, chefs will be forced to flex their cooking muscles when the Secret Ingredient is revealed. Emcees Mike Marchitelli of the Gourmet Noodle and Peter Maxwell of Maxwell’s keep the crowd entertained and informed. This is an event for the rowdy foodie, served up Crested Butte style – on a boisterous platter of enthusiasm. 6:00 p.m. $20.

Grant Farm is a country-disco, roots-rock, booty-shakin’, jam-tastic phenomenon conceived by Tyler Grant and Andy Thorn from the Emmitt-Nershi Band.

Frontman Tyler is an internationally recognized guitar virtuoso with first-place winnings from the National Flatpicking and MerleFest Doc Watson Guitar Championships. Partner in crime and multi-instrumentalist Andy joins with his aggressive and melodic banjo. They are rounded out by Chris Misner on drums, Adrian Engfer on bass, and Sean Foley on keyboards. 8:00 p.m. $15.

In “Survivor Golf” participants raise $2,500 in pledges that they can play 100 holes of golf. Event complete with breakfast and appetizers following by Chef Ben Breslauer of the Club at Crested Butte. Hosted by Ren and Gloria Kern.

This seven-member percussion and horndriven powerhouse fuses afrobeat, reggae, dub, funk, rock, soca and highlife with traditional sounds from Cuba, Brazil, West Africa and beyond.

The high-octane concoction becomes a cutting edge brew that ignites dance floors and melts world genres into one harmonic mix. With three albums and a solid national presence through festivals such as Wakarusa and NedFest, Eufórquestra with their self-termed “Afro-Caribbean-Barnyard-Funk” has become highly contagious.

8/30 Elephant Revival The instrumentally dextrous Elephant Revival play everything from djembe and electric banjo to musical saw. Their flexibility goes even further with originals that snap and sparkle with elements of traditional balladry, ScottishCeltic fiddle, psychedelic old-time indie rock, rustic Americana, world beat, ’40s’50s jazz and hip-hop. 6/10, 7/1, 8/26 Beginner & Intermediate Hula-Hoop Dancing Come and enjoy learning hula-hooping techniques and tricks that will “wow” everyone you know! Students will learn the core and off-body techniques of hooping that will build a solid foundation to use in hoop dancing. The movements taught here will strengthen the major muscle groups of the body while challenging the mind. The practice of hoopdance opens the upper back and chest, increases balance and flexibility and is a fun cardio workout. Includes warm ups, trick instruction, freestyle flow to music, blind-folded exercises and stretching routine. Instructor: Lealyn Poponi. 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. $20 / $15 in advance per class.

6/22, 6/29, 7/6 Poi, Awareness, & the Art of Flow Explore the mind, body, and spirit through object/gravity manipulation. Find your inner balance and show your true physical mandala through poi. Spin weights around a center point in concentric circles guided by specific geometric patterns. This skill is fun and easy to learn, so come and learn basic principles such as: poi mentality, balance, smoke and mirrors, planes, interpretive/ecstatic, and glow/flow basics with the opportunity to play with fire if you like after each class! Instructors: Nolan Hapeman and Sharon Reimer. 5:00 p.m.

6/30 Introduction to Stilt Walking Come have a blast learning how to stilt walk! Do it just for fun and then maybe choose to join us on one of our many stilt walking adventures such as the Center for the Arts and KBUT’s 25th Anniversary special Alpenglow celebration with MarchFourth Marching Band, the 4th of July Parade or Vinotok. 7/13, 7/14 Dance in Nature Workshop — Crested Butte & Taylor Canyon Held at Tony’s Trail on the Upper Loop and Taylor Canyon, this class incorporates elements of aerial dance, rock climbing, and modern dance. Use natural features to create a short dance piece to music. In the height of the Crested Butte wildflower season, be inspired to connect to your authentic movement in nature. On the second day of the workshop, friends and family are invited to watch the dance piece. Advance registration required. 9/4, 9/6, 9/11, 9/13 Beginner Aerial Dance Series Learn how to climb the aerial fabric, move with grace on the aerial hoop and trapeze. 7/16–7/23 Robin Parker & Nancy Dickins, Oil Paintings “Southern Strokes: Two Arkansas Women Paint the Rockies” showcases two Arkansas women in their plein air paintings focusing on the light, color and shadow of Crested Butte and the south of France. 7/23–7/30 Vitek Kruta, Acrylic Paint on Panels “Contemplating Forms,” explores the interaction of forms, space and perception where Vitek’s fuses his training in Old World techniques of fine and decorative arts with his eclectic variety of painting styles. Paint your own pottery seven days a week with ready-made pieces. Mugs, bowls, wine glasses, plates, children’s figurines and more available.

Price depends on piece and ranges from $5–$55.

The Studio will feature rotating local artists with gallery show openings each Artwalk night. On the last Thursday of each month stroll through the galleries of Crested Butte to experience local art and speak with the artists while enjoying appetizers and libations. Shared Artist’s Space The Shared Artist’s Space (SAS) is an affordable place to work on your art and a community of artists to work with.

Membership includes: access to studio space seven days a week; personal storage for art supplies and works in progress; access to potter’s wheels, slab roller, wedging table, and basic ceramics tools and supplies; use of kiln, access to a community of artists, and the potential to show and sell your work at ASCA.

Telluride Ah Haa School for the Arts instructor Kathy Hirsh teaches the always important basic drawing skills and learning to see shape, value, edges and color through the study of still life. She’ll discuss composition, how to start, doing thumbnails, underpainting and the all important — when to stop. 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. $25 + $8 materials fee.

Join master potter and professional artist Laura Elm and learn painting techniques to create a gorgeous, one-ofa-kind vase inspired by local Crested Butte wildflowers. Vases are handthrown by Laura. 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. $65 (includes materials).

Bring the art of painting to life on the Lobar stage every Tuesday night in July.

Watch the pros paint to music while splattering paint across your own canvas with expert instruction from the rotating roster of featured painters. Each participant (who is 21 years of age) will be supplied with libations while painting.

A dynamic conversation with artists about their medium, what it means to them, and their creative process. For practicing artists to find some of their own inspiration and art aficionados to learn more about the inner workings of an artist’s mind. July 20: Ceramicists Laura Elm and Donna Rozman. 7/12 Wildflower Greeting Card Collage* Utilizing various papers, fabrics, digital images, and more, create a one-of-a-kind set of greeting cards in this wildflowerinspired multimedia collage workshop with local artist Laura Elm. 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. $55 (includes materials).

7/13 Hand-Painted Flour Sack Towels* Local artist Gail Sovick teaches using fabric paints to on a set of flour sack kitchen towels with one-stroke silk painting techniques and heliographics (a process by which the sun “develops” fabric paint) to create simple, elegant designs of wildflowers. 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. $65 (includes materials).

7/14 Wildflower Batik* Taught by local artist Gail Sovick, learn an ancient art form utilizing wax resist and colorful dyes. Leave with a unique creation to use as a wall hanging, fabric for a sewing project, or a handmade gift. 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. $75 (includes materials).

7/16–7/20 Street Art: Speed Painting & Graffiti for Middle & High School Students Learn the history of street art and wellknown grafitti artists like Banksy with instructor John Meckes while working with design concepts, drawing, stenciling, spray painting, and speed painting to develop your own styles. 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. $200 (includes materials).

7/17 Dragonology: A Family Art Workshop Learn the real art of practical magic, through drawing, collage, mixed media where mythical beasts and fairy creatures come to life on paper. Taught by local professional artist Laura Elm. 1:00 p.m.

7/26 Painting From the Soul Touch Painting. Instructor Becky Chappell leads students to get in touch with what their body and soul want to say by meditating with music, then painting those experiences with fingers on paper over paint. 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. $45 (includes materials).

8/4 Precious Metal Clay Jewelry Crafting* Precious metal clay, PMC, is a crafting medium with the consistency of polymer clay infused with very small particles of silver. Instructor Mary Tuck teaches participants to form pendants, rings, and earrings, before firing them in a kiln where the binder burns away leaving a 99% pure silver piece. 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. $85 (includes materials).

8/10–8/12 Ripple: A Women’s Restorative Art Retreat Instructors and artists Melissa Mason and Ivy Walker lead this women’s retreat through the theme of “Following the Inner Impulse: Creative Play and Art in the Landscape.” This restorative retreat steeped in the visual arts allows time and space to connect with one’s inner visions and express them in a supportive environment. Designed to awaken and foster women’s innate creative energy, our methods help women make a connection to the self to create a positive shift in personal creative growth. 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. $450 (includes materials, catered snacks and beverages).

9/2 heART + LAND: Creating Transformative Artworks in the Landscape With local artist Ivy Walker participants use mixed media and natural elements, participants to explore creating temporary art in the landscape.

TOUR DE FORKS EVENTS ARE THE DELECTABLE, signature fundraising series for the Center for the Arts. Throughout the 20 Tour de Forks events of the summer, food and architectural enthusiasts visit a variety of private homes and dine on epicurean delights from accomplished chefs.

One evening may feature an historic ranch rife with history, alive with the breath of a simpler past. The next evening you’re on a sunny deck watching the alpenglow fade as the Slate River meanders past you. One day is reserved for adventure, as you hike through fields of wildflowers before being treated to a well deserved lunch.

Globally trained chefs prepare an exotic array of fine food from French to Italian to Asian. Your meals range from a casual outdoor feast inside the cozy interior of a teepee to an elegant, candlelight dinner in a home perched above town. One event might feature a fashion show, another an opportunity to rub elbows with musical legends and listen to a personal concert.

With a vision to be a captivating and welcoming place to nurture the arts, the Center offers over 120 performances to over 26,000 people every year. This would not be possible without the support garnered through Tour de Forks. The Center must raise close to 60% of its operating budget each year through fundraising events and contributions, and Tour de Forks is the cornerstone of this effort. With every sip of wine or every tantalizing taste of meticulously prepared cuisine, Tour de Forks participants help achieve the Center’s goal of providing art for everyone.
