OUR STORY

“You can’t get much farther away from the world’s troubles than this high-altitude hideaway, located in one of the most remote parts of the Rockies.” GREG SLOAN, USA TODAY

W

elcome to the heart of southwest Colorado… a gem in the Rocky Mountain treasure chest. Situated away from the drone of the interstate highway buzz, the Old West flavor of Gunnison County remains to this day. Ranches are worked, and you see cattle instead of condos on the horizon. Here folks can choose to get away from the trappings of a busy day-to-day life in some of the most beautiful country in America’s lower 48. Given the fact that Gunnison has a 109-year-old college in Western State, and Crested Butte is a rising mountain resort with colorfully clad Victorian storefronts, there is a certain surprising sophistication to these towns. Cultural opportunities ranging from world-class opera to award-winning theatre, live bands and nationally renowned lecturers are available any time of the year. Outdoor recreation is also found year-round on epic trails, clear rivers and lakes, abundant winter snow and scenic, uncrowded roads. Enjoy this publication and make sure you find time to visit our very special place in Colorado. Gunnison County includes a lot of real towns that are tied to the pioneering spirit and iconic features of the great American West. These 1880s mountain towns welcome you anytime of the year with their own brand of Western hospitality along with Mt. Crested Butte, incorporated in 1974 as the base village town of the ski resort. Each community has something special that sets it apart, yet it’s the sum of their parts that make us Colorado Pure & Simple. This is a place where the youth of Western State College of Colorado join in with families and old timers to invite visitors to stay awhile and get to know life at a slower pace.

Glimpse into our towns

BLUE MESA AT CURECANTI NATIONAL RECREATION AREA

GUNNISON is the county seat and with wide treelined boulevards, it’s a wonder it wasn’t selected as the capital of Colorado, as was once the plan. A college and ranching town, the community embraces the arts and recreation as much as it does intellectual pursuits and the beauty found in a large herd of cattle grazing in the high mountain grass. Home to Colorado’s oldest rodeo, Cattlemen’s Days brings it right to the top for nine full days to celebrate the real West. There’s also Blue Mesa, Colorado’s largest body of water and icon feature of Curecanti National Recreation Area; the 5-acre Pioneer Museum with its collection of 72 antique and classic cars; and the Gunnison Valley Observatory. In addition to the 8,000 acres of trails at Hartman Rocks Recreation Area, there’s also the Whitewater Park, Recreation and Aquatic Center, Jorgenson Event Center anchored by an indoor ice rink and Gunnison Arts Center. 1

OUR STORY

gunnison county

ALMONT is at the crossroads of Highway 135 and County Road 742 and the confluence of two scenic rivers. The Taylor River comes down from Taylor Reservoir through the Taylor Canyon before it meets up with the East River that flows from the north. The controlled release on the Taylor provides some of Colorado’s best whitewater rafting from early spring through the middle of September. The Gunnison River is formed in Almont, and there begins the second largest tributary to the mighty Colorado River. These rivers, along with Blue Mesa are known for trophy trout in stretches of Gold Medal waters. As a matter of fact, Gunnison County currently holds state records for rainbow, brown and lake trout and Kokanee salmon.

bungee trampolines, climbing wall and 18 holes of miniature golf that turns into an ice skating rink in winter. The Park expands further in winter providing an exhilarating, lift-served tubing hill! Alpine skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts revel on more than 1,100 acres of some of Colorado’s best snow served by 16 lifts and all of the amenities one would expect from a world-class ski resort. In addition to spectacular views of the Elk Mountains in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area, another beautiful feature of Mt. Crested Butte is the Mountain Garden. Maintained by the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, this incredible venue is ideal for the picture-perfect wedding and any special occasion.

CRESTED BUTTE is 131 years old and shows its age in a good way! As Colorado’s eighth largest National Historic District, the evidence of its roots are inescapable.Visit the Mountain Heritage Museum (and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame) to get the details of how this coal mining base camp town polished up into the gem that it is today. In 1990, state legislators deemed Crested Butte and the surrounding area the official Wildflower Capital of Colorado. This town has a vibrant charm and energy that comes from the people who live here (and those who visit, too). In 2008, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) named Crested Butte one of its “Dozen Distinctive Destinations.”“Crested Butte is a delightful hidden gem that offers a rare mix of beauty, history and adventure,” says NTHP President Richard Moe.“Filled with endless recreation opportunities no matter the time of year, this authentic mountain town is arguably one of the most charming vacation destinations in the Rockies.”

GUNNISON COUNTY is also home to some real beautiful diamonds in the rough. Take MARBLE for example. While the town is located 45 miles a bit north and west of Crested Butte in the northern part of the Gunnison Valley, it is worth the trip. It lies at the foot of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass and Raggeds Wilderness Areas in the beautiful Upper Crystal River Valley and is home to the famous Yule Marble Quarry. Travel County Road 12 (Kebler Pass Road) in nonwinter months and Highway 133 in the winter. While there, a high clearance four-wheel vehicle can take you up to the CRYSTAL townsite to view one of the most photographed areas in the state, the Crystal Mill.

MT. CRESTED BUTTE is a true mountain town nestled at the base of Crested Butte Mountain. With its mixture of architecture from the past and the new, blending into the history of the area, the center of attention is Crested Butte Mountain Resort. In summer, the base area turns into a flurry of activity with disc golf, epic mountain biking, live music on the outdoor stage and scenic chairlift rides (take your bike up with you) that offer a variety of hiking terrain and beg for a picnic! The newest attraction is the Adventure Park where visitors enjoy the 2

GOTHIC, an 1880s silver boom/bust town is home to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, operating as a center for research and education in the biological sciences since 1928. PITKIN is an 1880s mining town located 28 miles east of Gunnison. A visit there provides a real taste of the mining history of the area. Follow the Quartz Creek along County Road 76 through OHIO CITY, traveling the scenic route of the old Denver & South Park Railroad line. Enjoy historic Victorian and Georgian architecture with many of the original buildings still standing and in good repair. Continue on County Road 765 (Cumberland Pass) in the nonwinter months to the “wicked little town of TIN CUP” and learn about the colorful history of another great Western mining town. Books and information can be found at the General Store.

Gunnison County is 3,260 square miles (2,086,400 acres) with right about 14,000 residents, which works out to about 150 acres each. So, we’ve got plenty of space for you and the family, friends, dogs, horses, mountain bikes, kayaks, fishing gear, skis, snowmobiles, boats, jeeps, tents and campers that you care to bring. However, it just so happens that we don’t have any space whatsoever for a big shopping mall. Go figure. Almont Crested Butte Crystal Gothic Gunnison Marble Mt. TIPS FOR VISITORS

Gunnison County is a special place to those who live here and visit. We invite you to work with us to help ensure that it continues to be enjoyed for generations. And while you are here, be sure to get the most out of your visit by following some of these simple suggestions.

GunnisonCrestedButte.com

Use vehicles responsibly: stay on designated routes and out of closed areas. Leave no trace: remove all evidence of your visit so others will find it as beautiful as you did. Respect other visitors: share the land, minimize noise, keep pets in control and drive safely on narrow roads. Keep wildlife wild: do not feed them, move quietly through the woods and around streams, and enjoy them from a distance. Respect private property: know where you are and have legal access to places you want to enjoy. Have a safe trip: changing weather and difficult terrain can pose hazards. Use sunscreen, carry an ample water supply, snacks, outerwear; and stay within your capabilities.

unplug & recharge

unnison County truly has a laid-back atmosphere, making it a unique place to unplug and recharge. Cool, clean Rocky Mountain air and a lifestyle of pure fun and simplicity welcome you. Here, you will find an abundance of professional athletes and likely more health and wellbeing practioners per capita than anywhere else in the country! These locals represent a small sample of those who choose to live and raise their families in a place where health and wellness are a priority. As people of all ages focus on healthy lifestyles for the well-being of spirit, mind and body, it has expanded beyond traditional Western practices and includes many other modalities, all of which can be found here. A local association of health and wellness professionals, Crested Butte/Gunnison Wellbeing Connection, makes it easy to be introduced to healing arts alternatives with year-round offerings as well as many local studios. We invite you to participate and feel the difference.

I

n fact, Gunnison County has long celebrated originality with four art events gracing our calendar for multiple decades: 39th annual Crested Butte Arts Festival, 38th annual Gunnison Art in the Park, 23rd annual The People’s Fair and Marble/marble XXII (a marble sculpting symposium). The beauty is that this is only the beginning when it comes to intellectual and artistic discovery. For example, we like to tell stories about ourselves at the Gunnison Arts Center’s annual Sonofagunn theatrical production. We mix a little out-of-the-box with our classical tunes during the Crested Butte Music Festival’s “Have a Beer with Beethoven” held in a local barn. Newgrass great Drew Emmitt calls Gunnison County home, and we attract the likes of Robert Earl Keen, Aspen-Santa Fe Ballet and the Colorado Symphony Quartet to name a few. Find yourself tapping your toes and expanding your mind in Gunnison County.

You’ll find festive atmospheres and tasty treats at the weekend farmers’ markets. There’s produce, baked and home-canned goods, prepared foods, art and more!

If you haven’t already heard, COLORADO IS THE NAPA VALLEY OF BEER. WEST ELK LOOP SCENIC & HISTORIC BYWAY From the north (Glenwood Springs and Aspen area), travel Hwy 82 to Carbondale, where the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway begins on Hwy 133 south to Marble and the breathtakingly beautiful Upper Crystal River Valley. Continue over McClure Pass, and just past the Paonia Reservoir head east on Gunnison County Road 12, also known as Kebler Pass Road, into Crested Butte. This is passable only in non-winter months and is gravel most of the way but fine for passenger cars. In 28

winter, continue on Hwy 133 south, take Hwy 92 east to the Blue Mesa Dam at Curecanti National Recreation Area and go east on Hwy 50 into Gunnison. To complete the loop, go north on Hwy 135, passing through Almont and ending in Crested Butte. The 205 miles of two-lane roads through rural western Colorado touches three designated Wilderness Areas and passes through thousands of acres of National Forest. The road skirts canyon rims, follows whitewater rivers, plunges into deep forests and traverses desert and sagebrush plains.

(877) 448–1410

The West Elk Loop has been described by a forest ranger as “the closest you can come to a wilderness experience in a passenger car.” SILVER THREAD SCENIC & HISTORIC BYWAY Head west out of Gunnison on Hwy 50 for approximately 9 miles then go south on Hwy 149 to experience the newest extension of this 117-mile byway. From the beginning, this byway feels wonderfully isolated as it leaves behind Blue Mesa, Colorado’s largest lake, and winds through vast tracts of public lands. It eventually enters the San Juan Mountains and the historic town of Lake City. Follow the byway over Spring Creek Pass and on to Creede along the Rio Grande River to the byway’s conclusion in South Fork. GUNNISON OR CRESTED BUTTE TO TIN CUP, PITKIN & OHIO CITY Allow 4.5 hours or more for ample photo-taking time and lunch. (Passenger car in non-winter months only; trailers not recommended.) From Gunnison, head north on Hwy 135, and from Crested Butte head south on Hwy 135 to Almont. At the intersection of Hwy 135 and County Road 742 (also known as Taylor Canyon Road) in Almont, head up the beautiful Taylor Canyon. At Taylor Reservoir, follow the road around and turn right at the sign for Tin Cup, where eight miles from that point is the “wicked little town of Tin Cup.” Stop in at the General Store for a little book describing the colorful past of this mining town, or have lunch at Frenchy’s Restaurant and dig into some of the area’s best pies and burgers! On the way out of town on the left, be sure to stop at the Tin Cup Cemetery with incredible vistas and Protestant, Catholic and Jewish knolls and Boot Hill, where those who died from violent crimes were buried. Continue 7 miles to the top of Cumberland Pass and you’ll be on top of the world at 12,015 feet above sea level.

GunnisonCrestedButte.com

Traveling 10 miles down to historic Pitkin, you’ll pass several old mine camps and cabins getting you to wonder what life was like back in the late 1880s. Take some time to drive around Pitkin and be sure to stop in at the General Store as you come into town. This is a great place to take pictures of old Western and Victorian architecture. Continue south on County Road 76 through historic Ohio City until you reach Hwy 50, heading west back into Gunnison CRESTED BUTTE OR GUNNISON LOOP AROUND THROUGH OHIO CREEK Allow 3.5 hours or more for picture taking and hiking along the way. (Passenger car in non-winter months only; trailers not recommended.) From Gunnison, head north on Hwy 135, or south from Crested Butte to County Road 730, (also known as Ohio Creek Road). Start out enjoying expansive hay and cattle ranches with distant views of Carbon Peak and the Anthracite Mountains. When you depart the paved, two-lane road onto a wellmaintained dirt/gravel road, you will be looking up at the mountains and driving through aspen groves, reminiscent of what the early pioneers experienced. Along the way, you will see some trailhead markers. Beaver Pond Trail is an easy 1 1/2-mile walk to the ponds one way. Aspen canopies provide shade along the path, and in late August the mushroom display is eye-popping! Once at the intersection of County Roads 730 and 12, you can go left over Kebler Pass and toward Paonia or go right and head into Crested Butte. If you have an extra hour, make the first left once on County Road 12 up to Lake Irwin, a beautiful natural lake, along with a dam and hiking trails. Picnic tables and a Gunnison National Forest campground are also there.

DAY TRIP ACTIVITIES & ITINERARIES HALF-DAY TRIPS

CURECANTI NATIONAL RECREATION AREA is home to Blue Mesa, Colorado’s largest lake and so much more! See page 7 for more detailed information. Stop at the Elk Creek Visitor Center for a chat with a ranger and information about guided hikes, night sky viewing and the Morrow Point Boat Tour. While there, walk down to the marina for boat rentals and fishing information or eat on the deck of the marina restaurant. Check nps.gov/cure for seasonal operating hours of the marina and restaurant or call (970) 641–2337. LAKE IRWIN sits up above Crested Butte in the West Elk Mountains. Stop by a local restaurant or market and pick up a lunch to go for your scenic ride, gentle hike and picnic with Mother Nature. Head out of Crested Butte on Whiterock Avenue, which turns into County Road 12. After about 6 miles, go right and follow the signs to Lake Irwin. As you come to the lake, you will drive over the dam; park on the left and a trail begins there along the river. Just behind you are picnic tables and easy access into the lake for fishing, swimming and canoeing.

FULL-DAY TRIPS

BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK is just a scenic 60 mile drive west of Gunnison on Highway 50. Along the way, you will travel beside Blue Mesa Lake providing scenic vistas and points of interest pull-offs. A stop at the Dillon Pinnacles just as you pass over the second bridge on Hwy 50 is a photo opportunity of natural spires created from volcanic ash rock, wind and weather. Approximately 25 miles west of Gunnison, on the way to the

National Park, is the turnoff for Pine Creek. Drive down the winding road to the parking lot and stretch your legs with a walk down to the Gunnison River to the old Denver & Rio Grande Railroad bed in the upper part of the Black Canyon. Did we mention it was 232 steps down and back up again? Be sure to carry plenty of water with you. Restrooms are located in the parking lot. Call (970) 641–2337 for seasonal boat tour information. MARBLE & THE SURROUNDING AREA is one of the most scenic in all of Gunnison County, located just 45 miles to the north of Crested Butte over Kebler Pass/County Road 12 (passable the end of May through early November), by a paved road from State Hwy 133. The community is located in the Upper Crystal River Valley along the Elk Mountains — Marble is the gateway to nearby Crystal townsite, home of one of the most photographed mill sites in the country. Marble to Crystal requires 4-wheel drive, high clearance and a camera! Unlike most of Gunnison County, Marble is located on the north side of McClure Pass. It was first incorporated in 1899 and is the location of the historic Yule Marble Quarry. The marble is considered to be of exceptional quality and has been used for the Tomb of the Unknowns, as well as for parts of the Lincoln Memorial and buildings in San Francisco and New York City. Seven sites within Marble have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Haxby House William S. Parry House St. Paul’s Church Marble City State Bank Building Marble High School Marble Mill Site Marble Town Hall

GUNNISON It is believed the Ute Indians summered in the Gunnison area in the 1500s. The first few non-Native American individuals arrived in the early 1840s in search of good trapping and mining, though none set up permanent settlements. On May 22, 1877, the city of Gunnison became the official seat of the county and the center for local commerce. The railroad arrived in Gunnison in 1880 allowing for further growth of the region. To learn about the history of Gunnison and its historic buildings, please pick up a copy of the “Walking Tour of Historic Gunnison” brochure provided by the City Of Gunnison at the Gunnison Visitor Center located at 500 E. Tomichi Avenue. You also can view the brochure online at GunnisonCrestedButte.com/heritage. GUNNISON PIONEER MUSEUM On display at the 5acre museum is an extensive collection of memorabilia and artifacts from throughout Gunnison County including 14 buildings, the No. 268 Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and the Mallett Antique Car Collection, one of the largest

historic vehicle collections in Colorado with 72 vehicles. The museum is open daily from Memorial Day weekend through the end of September, Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A minimal fee is charged to visit the museum. PARLIN is named for John T. Parlin who started a dairy farm and stage stop there in 1877, becoming a busy spot as prospectors and settlers streamed into the area. In 1881, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (D&RG) arrived at the town. When visiting Parlin, be sure to make a stop at the Parlin QT General Store, which opened in 1904 selling gas, oil, general merchandise, hay, grain, feed and miner’s supplies. The area surrounding OHIO CITY was explored by prospectors as early as the 1850s. Numerous gold and silver mines and four mills up the Gold Creek Valley kept the town in business for many years. Many of their remnants still stand. Today, the school house, jail, town hall, general store and a few cabins still stand.

WHETSTONE MOUNTAIN

PITKIN is the oldest incorporated city on the Western Slope of Colorado. Prospectors first came to the area in 1878 and the town incorporated on August 11, 1879. Settlers chose the area for its mineral deposits of gold, silver, copper, lead and iron. Still standing are the old Bonton Hotel, now called the Pitkin Hotel, City Hall and Pitkin School. All are listed on the Colorado Register of Historic Places. A Victorian-Gothic style church, built in 1901, is located near the corner of Sixth and State Streets by the depot that was built in 1881 by the Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad. ALPINE TUNNEL NATIONAL REGISTER HISTORIC DISTRICT There is an existing online auto tour for this area at www.GunnisonCrestedButte.com/alpinetunnel. For more detail, the Gunnison Visitor Center has brochures about the district. Generally, the Alpine Tunnel Historical District is open from July to September and includes close to 13 miles of the former Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad railbed across the Continental Divide from Hancock to Quartz. It also includes the Alpine Tunnel itself, which is now sealed closed. The railroad constructed the tunnel in 1880-1881 in a race to cross the Continental Divide and reach Gunnison. For summer travel only.

32

CUMBERLAND PASS & THE MINING SITES There are numerous mining sites along Cumberland Pass. The Bon Ton Mine sits on the south side of the pass. The Blistered Horn and Jimmie Mack Mines sit on the north side of the pass. The pass itself was constructed in 1882 to connect Tin Cup to Pitkin and the Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad. For summer travel only. TIN CUP & TAYLOR PARK HISTORY Tin Cup is only accessible in winter months by cross-country skis, snowshoes or snowmobiles. Taylor Park is named for James Taylor, who came into the area while prospecting for gold in 1859. Purportedly, a member of his party dipped his tin drinking cup into a stream and found gold in 1860. The party named the area Tin Cup, and the river and the park were given Taylor’s name. Frenchy’s Restaurant is named after the saloon that operated in Tin Cup from 1879 to 1913 by A.N.“Frenchy” Perrault. The General Store served as a land office, and the current business as a general store began in 1976. There are approximately 95 graves in the TIN CUP CEMETERY. The first burial was T. L. Stormes on April 30, 1879. The individuals interned there were segregated by

PIONEER SKI AREA & GUEST CABINS In the mid 1930s, students from Western State College, using abandoned cable and machinery from the Blistered Horn Mine on Cumberland Pass, fashioned Colorado’s first chairlift at the Pioneer Ski Area, which operated from 1939 until 1951. Five original buildings still stand.Visitors can park on Forest Service Road 740, built in 1911, and hike on Forest Service trail 560 to the top of the abandoned ski area, where there also is a cabin. GLACIER SCHOOL HOUSE is located at 21293 Highway 135, Glacier began in the early 1880s as a stage stop for the mines up Cement Creek and soon became a stop for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. Local ranching families built the school house that is still standing, in the early 1920s to replace an earlier log structure closer to the river. The school house is currently a showroom for a local log furniture craftsman. CRESTED BUTTE The Ute Indians summered in the area for hundreds of years before the first settlers of European descent arrived looking for precious metals as early as 1874. The town incorporated in 1880 and quickly grew as a supply center for the mining camps. The town survived due to the large concentration of high quality bituminous coal in the area. English, American and northern European settlers and miners arrived first followed by Croatians, Italians and Slavs in the early 1900s. Many buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s still stand. Crested Butte was designated a Registered National Historic District in 1972. OHIO CITY

religion, with Catholics buried on one knob and Jews and Protestants on another. Individuals who were killed as the result of violent crimes were buried on Boot Hill. Between 1935 and 1937, more than 300 men worked to construct the TAYLOR DAM, which has a structural height of 206 feet. The dam keeps the water on the Western Slope for irrigation. Taylor Reservoir covers 2,030 acres of land and is a choice fishing spot. ALMONT sits at the junction where the Taylor River and the East River meet, forming the Gunnison River. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad arrived in 1881. The main log building currently occupied by a restaurant and fly-fishing store at the Almont Resort is the remains of the Marston Hotel built in 1893. In the early 1890s, simply-built vernacular log cabins were constructed along the river. The resort advertised they had restorative drinking water that would help bladder and kidney troubles.

KEBLER PASS

You will see a small road exiting to the right; park your car and walk along this road for about 90 yards and you will see the sign just below the wall. The Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad (DSP&P) built this structure in 1882. FAIRVIEW SCHOOL HOUSE was originally built in 1881 and had a magnificent view of the Anthracite Mountain range and Mt. Carbon, hence the name, Fairview School. The old log Fairview School was eventually moved to the Easterly homestead and replaced by the current frame structure in 1906. Please view it from the road.

CRESTED BUTTE MOUNTAIN HERITAGE MUSEUM

CRESTED BUTTE CEMETERY There is a memorial to the 59 miners killed in the Jokerville Mine explosion of 1884 here. The chapel, erected in the 1960s, is only open in the summer and includes interior architectural elements from St. Patrick’s Church, built around 1890. IRWIN CEMETERY had its first interment in 1879, the same year silver was discovered in the area. Most of the major causes of deaths included diseases such as pneumonia as well as snow slides and mining accidents. No murderers were buried at the cemetery. There are more than 50 graves, many unmarked today. One of the few stone-marked graves is that of Mary Bambraugh. She died of mountain fever in 1881 at the age of 17. THE GREAT WALL An interpretive sign placed by the Gunnison County Historic Preservation Commission is located just beyond the Beaver Ponds trailhead on the south side of Ohio Pass, County Road 730. As you are heading up the pass (from Gunnison), drive 1.4 miles past the trailhead.

TWIN BRIDGES (over the Gunnison River) Located on a U.S. Highway 50 service road on the west edge of town, these bridges are on the National Register of Historic Places. They were designed in 1926 by the Colorado Department of Highways. The bridges survive as one of the last remaining examples of what was once a common bridge type. THE BLUE MESA RESERVOIR & DAM is the largest of its kind in the state of Colorado at more than 20 miles long and with approximately 92 miles of shoreline. Prior to the construction of the dam, the land under the reservoir was used first by Native Americans as far back as 10,000 years ago. The reservoir covered the area where the towns of Iola and Sapinero once stood and where the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad operated its trains from 1882 until 1949, with the last train coming through in 1954. The National Park Service offers tours by boat through Morrow Point, the eastern end of the BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK. The visitor center is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., its winter hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

For additional information about local history, a more comprehensive list of historic sites and to see a list of resource books, go to GunnisonCrestedButte.com/heritage. The Gunnison County Historic Preservation Commission has a number of brochures available about historically interesting sites and has designated numerous structures as being locally significant.
