Davis Bike Loop Davis, CA
Bicyclists Walkers Joggers Family Students Adults
BACKGROUND The Davis Bike Loop is a 12 mile long trail that passes through most major places of Davis. In 2007, the first official signage/markings were designed and spray painted onto the ground. The route was chosen and created to give town folks and visitors an enjoyable experience that is navigable not only for adults but for children as well. In 2010, Davis Bicycles! started an annual family-oriented event called Bike Loopalooza, which is aimed to show the ease of using the loop to bike to school.
GOAL/OBJECTIVE The goal is to create a new graphic identity for the loop to make it more visible to first-time and experience users. The new logo is accompanied by a new signage system that will make navigation within, and in the vicinity of the loop, easy. Overall, the loop will provide a new experience that will encourage more people to take advantage of it for recreational and commuting reasons alike.

Landscaping

Lighting
The landscape is user friendly for walkers, joggers, and bicyclists (students, adults, families). The path is mostly flat with some uphills and downs that consists of tunnels. In addition, there are times where the path winds which can prove to be confusing.
Spray paint is used to apply the logo on to the pavement of the loop.
There are street lights that turn on at night to help users guide their way around the loop.

Defining Qualities and Form
The only graphics used in the bike loop is the existing logo that consists of an old fashioned bicycle with the words “Davis Bike Loop”. Along with the logo, there are bolded lines/markers added on either side of the logo to indicate the direction that should be followed.
The scenic areas of the loop, and the City of Davis being relativel green was most likely an inspiration for the existing logo’s color palette.
Although there are markers on the pavement, it is hard to notice them if the user doesn’t pay close attention. They only appear when the user comes up to an intersection to tell you which direction to turn to.

The trees on the logo was inspired by the predominantly scenic portion of the bike loop located in south Davis. A path leads into the center of the graphic to represent the bike loop. The handle bars specify that the path is for bikes, and it forces the viewer to take on the point of view of the biker as if they were on the path themselves. The color palette contains shades of green for the trees and warmer colors for the path and handle bars for contrast. The black and white graphic uses different tones for contrast and separation. The bike loop has been renamed “Davis Loop” for simplicity. The text sits below the graphic in bold, uppercase Gill Sans for readability from a distance. The rectangular shape the uppercase letters make is used to support the complexity of the design of the graphic.

RECOGNITION
The letter at the top of the sign will change depending on the location. Historical facts and photographs will be presented here.
This sign is placed in the transition points between street and bike path. The red-orange color is used to create contrast between the sign and the surrounding trees.
The orientation signage holds the map to the location. There are 5 districts to organize points of interests on the map; each district has a color that matches the map.
The design is inspired by a tree, with leaves represented by the different colored blocks where the donor’s names will be placed. The red-orange color was assigned to the message in the middle so that it will stand out.
