Design 115 Process Book Kathy Chang
Project 1: Minimal Lettersforms For this project we were supposed to use four different characters from the same typeface to create our composition. To begin, I started out by doing sketches of the typefaces and experimenting with different combinations.
After experimenting with enough thumbnails, I chose three thumbnails I liked and worked best. After much deliberation the three composition, I chose the composition I had created with the Bodoni typeface. (the one on the far left)
I chose this one out of the four because it worked best. Unlike the other ones, Each letterform I used flowed into one another but still maintained each of their uniqueness.
Project 2: Type Hierarchy SET !. For Set 1A and 1B, the first i did was to make 10 different arrangments using the information provided to us, and the Univers 45 and 65 in pt 15. 5 arrangments were for 1A, while the other 5 were for 1B.
After making my 10 arrangements on 10 by 10 inches tracing paper, I chose two arrangements that I liked and thought worked best.
I chose this arrangment for set 1B because I liked how the white space created by the text showed some sort of maze-like shape which flows through the text. Additionally, I tilted the text to give it more movement so it wouldn’t be as static if it was upright.
As for this one, I chose it for a similar reason as my set 1A. The white space in this composition also created a shape that I liked, a staircase. I also used the bold text for the speakers and title because that’s what people would want to know first. I’ve also bolded the title and text on the bottom to balance out the whole composition.
SET 2. In this set, there was more variety of the text we could use. This included the pt 9 of the Univers font . Like Set 1, I did four arrangments on tracing paper. In these four arrangments, I tried playing around with the white space to see what kind of shapes I could create. Some of them were more successful in defining the white space, while the others didn’t work so well. For example. the one on the bottom right had and interesting text shape, but there was too much white space. In the end, I went with the slanted arrangement and the family tree (bottom left).
I chose this for Set 2A because I really like the maze-shape the white space creates just like in Set 1A. I also decided to make the text and horizontal and vertical to each other to show the relationship of the text and hierarchy as well.
I chose this for Set 2B because it created a really beautiful hiearchy that I love. I call this arrangement the family tree because of how the text flows from one another vertically and horizontally. Not only that, I made the speakers, dates, and place smaller so that it wouldn’t “overpower the stem, which is what holds the text in place. By doing so, this arrangment was very strong and unique.
SET 3. For set 3a and 3b, I also did for four arrangments on tracing paper. The main difference for this set was that we could use rules for set 3a with existing rules from set 2B, while 3b we could do anything we wanted.
For the first arrangment I did on the top left corner, I was playing around with the rules. Looking at it, it seems very confined and didn’t really allow room for the text to move. For the one on the top right corner, I did played around with the rules minimally, so that they only served as emphasis for the information. Then in the bottom left corner, I decided to make the title really big to capture the audience’s attention so that their eyes would then go to the speakers which was the second largest. Finally, the fourth arrangement was created similarly to the one on top of it, just that I made the font size larger and made some text read vertically. In the end I chose the one on the top left and bottom right. Both had some changes.
I chose this for set 3A because I liked how it’s titled to give the whole thing more movement. However, there are some changes in this final design. I got rid of the box around the text because I didn’t like how it confined the text, and made it really static. Instead I chose to use less rules and just put one or two around the text. By doing so, it actually made the whole design better.
I chose this design for set 3B because of the hierarchy. One of the changes I made in this final design was to make the title “Visible Language” bigger and lower the opacity for the word “language”. Because of this, it gave the design better hierarchy. I also inserted the dates and time between each speaker to integrate everything. It really made the design feel complete.
Project 3: Book Design In our final project we were supposed to create a book based on Paul Rand’s article, Design and the Play Instinct. We were to create the pages and the cover for the book while thinking of how to arrange and play with the text and images while creating good hierarchy. Also, we had to use one spot color for the book.
Before starting my book I created thumbnail sketches to think of what layouts I could do.
After I was done creating my thumbnail sketches, I then went on to create the layouts on Indesign. There were a lot of changes I did, but because I had sketched out some ideas on paper I was able to create my layout s faster and smoothly. I wanted my book to be minimalistic, so I added triangles as accent around my book. the triangles also gave a playful vibe to the book. I also chose a sort of electric blue color as my spot color because it stood out and seemed playful. After having done my layouts. I went on the create the cover of my book. It was really hard for me to create the cover, because I wasn’t sure what design I wanted to do.
Next came the harder part, to put the book together. I went to ace hardware to buy c clamps so I could hold my pages together and used PVA glue to bind them.
Lastly, I glue the cover and the pages together with the glue again and pressed it down so that they would stick together.
