A Lion By Choice With A Lifetime Of Service

Meet Jack Connolly, he’s turning 97 this week, and although an Accountant by trade, he’s a Lion by choice, and is celebrating 61 years as one - an outstanding milestone - congratulations Jack!

Born in Gayndah, and educated at Nudgee College, Jack’s Lions story began when his career as an accountant and bank manager saw him move around Southeast Queensland. He’s been a member of five different Lions Clubs over the years. Initially joining Eagle Farm Club, his work took him to Clubs at Nambour, Southport, Grange and finally to the Lions Club of Brisbane Bunya, where he’s still a member today.

Jack has taken on multiple roles over his 61 years of service including District Governor, Cabinet Secretary (twice), President, Vice-President and various Director roles (multiple times!). These positions took him from Brisbane to Roma to San Francisco and back.

Jack shared his view on one important aspect of being a Lion. ‘In my opinion, Lions is built on friendship,’ he said.

‘It sort of grows on you.’

‘Getting involved and meeting people is the most enjoyable part of being a Lion.’

Jack reflected on one of the biggest changes since he joined, the ‘inclusion of women’, which he said was needed.

‘Different talents were required, not just businessmen.’

‘We began doing far more social work and fellowship, and giving more to those in need,’ he shared.

When asked about the future of Lions, Jack said he firmly believes there’s still a place in the world for service clubs and their survival hinges on our ability to recruit new members to lighten the load.

‘Many hands make light work,’ Jack said.

‘Give it a go, come and see what we’re all about.’ For more information about the Brisbane Bunya Lions Club visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LionsBrisbane or look up their website https://brisbanebunya.qld.lions.org. au recommended book email at much to designed, you (especially as above more community a echonewsbrisbane
