SECRETARY'S MESSAGE Hey Key Clubbers, It’s your super secretary again ;). I hope you’ve enjoyed your stay in Key Club up until now. As 2018 comes to a close and it’s that time of the year again to reminisce and come up with New Year Resolutions, hopefully making new memories is a big priority on that special list. And what better way than to attend Key club events and interact with your whole club including that loving community of ours?! Seeing many of you have already achieved and exceeded that bronze tier of 50 hours (and some are even pushing 100), I bow. I’m very proud of you all and hope that you don’t stop there and finish off this year’s Key Club term strong by attending more events! Maybe even some you’ve never been to before? Why not, right? And stay off them phones. Anyway, Happy New Year! Thank you for your service.

Right now it’s time to make some New Year’s Resolutions. One of my resolutions is to be more friendly. (Gonna try to accomplish this goal at HCON!)What’s your resolutions for 2019? Whatever that goal is, I hope that it will be accomplished sometime throughout the year. Lastly, my wish from me to you is for everyone to make many great memories and have an exciting and safe new year! ~ Noelle Oyama Newsletter Editor 5

LIGHTS ON RICE PARADE IOKEPA RODRIGUES | MEMBER The Lights on Rice Parade was a great way to meet the community. There were so many bright lights, and it was great being able to see the smiles of those who give so much to us. During the parade, I was passing out candy to children as we walked down Rice Street. They were really happy when they saw the candy. Before the parade started, we had a Division Council Meeting. It was interesting being able to see more of what Key Club was about. Also, it was a great way to socialize with the other members of not only Kauai High School Key Club, but the Kapa’a Key Club as well. I was really glad to be apart of this experience and I can’t wait for next year so I can do it again.

10

11

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGING JENNA TAKATA | MEMBER Key Clubbers sang and danced to many different Christmas songs as we collected money for the Salvation Army. People enjoyed our singing, dancing, music, and of course, our loud “Happy Holidays! Although we were not good singers and dancers, the spirit of the holidays really showed and brought not only the customers, but brought us Key Clubbers joy as well. Being able to spend my time with my friends and community was lots of fun. Bell ringing is a great event to do during the holiday season, and I am glad that I was able to spend my last holiday season as a Key Clubber raising money for the Salvation Army by bell ringing.

13

TREE OF REMEMBRANCE JASMINE DELA CRUZ | OFFICER From the end of November till the ending of December is the busiest time of year but it is also the most joyful time of the year. Key Club takes part in helping at a variety of events during the holiday season one of which is Hospice Tree of Remembrance at Kukui Grove and Kukuiula. Tree of Remembrance is a way for the community and also those who are just visiting to remember their loved ones who have passed, are far from home, or their loved ones who they are just simply grateful for. The way that Tree of Remembrance works is that people from the community write down the name of their loved one with a message on an ornament for a small donation that goes towards helping other families and pets that are in need during the holiday season. Then that ornament is placed onto a Christmas tree where it stays for the rest of the holiday season in remembrance of those who have passed or are far away during the holiday season.

14

15

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS DARIAN MARTIN | MEMBER Festival of Lights is by far one of my favorite December events to do. It really puts me into the Christmas spirit with all the lights, decorated trees, and the Christmas accessories we wear such as reindeer headbands and of course, santa hats. For this year’s Festival of Lights, I had the opportunity of becoming a chairperson and I will admit, I was scared; even when I had to talk about what the trees decorations meant. Shortly after I walked around asking strangers if they needed help talking pictures, I wasn’t scared at all, in fact perfectly fine. I started to have more confidence, which I appreciate since this is helping me getting out of my safe circle. At the end of the event I’d like to believe that everyone left with a smile, since I was able to leave with a better and positive attitude.

HYGIENE BAGS KRYSTEN CASSANDRA PADASDAO | OFFICER On December 13th, the officers and some members stayed after school to create hygiene bags for December’s spotlight on service. (we wanted to focus on providing basic needs) To help create our hygiene bags, two of our hotels here on the island generously

donated

hygiene

products

such

as

shampoo,

conditioner, body wash and even facial soap. Besides donations from the hotels, the hygiene bag also consisted of a microfiber cloth. We are so thankful for their donation of these supplies and their understanding in our purpose of our project. As December is the month in which we feel the holiday spirit and the most generous month of giving, the Kauai High Key Club was able to help others in need of these hygiene products and hope to give others a better holiday feeling and appreciation that there are many who care for each other! After two days in creating our bags, we had a total of about 70 hygiene bags that were given out to those in need as well as other bottles and bars of soap that was also given to Kauai Economics.
