TREASURER’S MESSAGE Happy spooky October everyone! Hope you guys are having a blast while being in Key Club. As Key Clubbers, it ain’t easy to balance your schedule, but I want to congratulate you all for making it this far! I encourage you all to go above and beyond your expectations by participating in more events and getting more than the minimum hours; there’s nothing wrong with being an overachiever. Key Club is a community service club, but it is also a club where you can better yourself and who you are. You can meet new people, your communication skills increase, helps you manage your time, and it prepares you for the world after High School. So, set a goal for yourself this October and every month after that, whether it’s a Key Club goal, school goal, or a goal in life, set it up! And if you want to achieve your goal, then you better “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”(Muhammad Ali) because that’s what a Key Clubber is! Hope you have the best memories in Key Club and until next time everyone BEE safe!

COP ON TOP ALAYSIA NAVOR | OFFICER On Saturday, September 1st, 2018, Kauai High Key Clubbers helped with Cop On Top, a fundraiser for Special Olympics. Key Clubbers greeted entering and leaving shoppers in front of Walmart in Lihue. We collected donations, handed out pens and stickers, and held up signs. We even stood out near the parking lot front and danced with the police officers that were on the roof of the store! It was a blast doing the Key Club cheer with the police officers and members from Kapaa High Key Club. Cop on Top was a fun filled event that allowed us to meet the Special Olympic athletes as well as bond with members from different Key Clubs! 8

Wilcox Family Fun Night RACHAEL MACATOMBAS | MEMBER The Wilcox Family Fun Night on September 7, 2018, was a fun and educational event for the kids at Wilcox Elementary School. At this event there was a variety of food and games for the kids such as obstacle course, football, and even a fishpond. The event was a wonderful way to welcome back the students and create an event where the students could enjoy a fun night out with their entire family. The Key Clubbers helped other volunteers and Wilcox Elementary staff at various games, stations, and food booths. I helped out at a duck pond game for kindergarten and first graders. After they won the game, a fellow key clubber and I helped assist the children to their hard-earned prizes. It was fun seeing how excited they were to pick out their prize, especially since slime was one of them and lots of kids these days like slime. It was a great way to help other volunteers and to socialize with the younger generations in our community. The Wilcox Family Fun Night, was a great event where everyone was friendly, and focused on making a fun and memorable night for these students and their families.

KHS OPEN HOUSE KEAHNE ALIGA | OFFICER Kauai High Key Club’s participation in the annual open house was a great success! It was not only an opportunity to promote the club, it was also a time to use our leadership skills and energy. At the open house, we sold goodies such as Pocky, chips, gummy fruit snacks, etc. for reasonable prices. We didn’t participate in hopes of profit, but rather to be more involved in our school’s activities. The open house is always a frenzy with all the families walking around visiting the teachers and checking out the different clubs. This proved to be an event where the attendees had to come out of their comfort zones. We advertised by yelling out to the crowd and talked to families about what Key Club is. We also seized the opportunity to sell our Krispy Kreme fundraising tickets. In doing so, we were able to interact with new people interested in what Kauai High School has to offer, and spread the word about what Key Club is all about.

ROMINA CASTILLO | OFFICER The Kiwanis Car Wash didn’t start perfectly nor did it end like we predicted it to be. The weather was really dark, cloudy, cold, and was about to rain when I arrived at the Car Wash. But, that didn’t stop us Key Clubbers from doing good services for our community! Although the weather was so dark and gloomy, the Key Clubbers spirits from both Kauai High Key Club and Kapa’a Key Club shined through. The weather didn’t give us many customers, but we worked extra hard to make their cars clean before the rain came. As it the sky started to drizzle, the Kapa’a and Kauai High Key Clubbers bonded together with the famous “How do you feel?” game. Around the middle of the first shift, the rain started to pour down on us. Although we weren’t able to continue afterwards because of the weather, I’m glad that we were able to wash a couple cars and bond with members from the other club!

It’s time to . . .

Let’s give out some treats this Halloween! This month, collect donations in the orange UNICEF boxes (shown below) to help provide children with healthcare, nutrition, clean water, education, emergency relief and more. Get creative! For example, when you’re out trick-or-treating, ask if the people giving out candy can give a donation. What better way to celebrate Halloween by giving back to others! 14

HELPFUL TIPS TIP #05 A easy way to get a lot of hours and points is to go to big events such as Walk-a-thon, Make a Difference Day, and many more. Events such as Membership Training are great ways for your team to achieve points. (Per person = 1 and whole pod = 7) If you’re very busy during the month and can’t make the weekly events, this is a great way to make all your hours.

Do YOU want to be featured in next month’s Newsletter? ● Any member can submit an article! After any major event (ex. Kiwanis Car Wash, LTG Day, etc.) write an article and send it to my email, 19noelle_oyama@kauaihs.k12.hi. us or text 1(808)631-8551. Members who have attended major events will be contacted. These articles are required for member recognition and awards.

● ●

Don’t know how many hours you have? Why did I get a probation? When is something due?

If you have questions, contact your pod leader. They can answer the questions above and more!
