Message from Happy July Aqua Apes!
June was a month filled with a sufficient amount of volunteer opportunities that I hope you all have participated in. I highly encourage, especially during these times, that you all attend as many events as possible to help your community! However, if you haven’t taken advantage of the opportunities, we still have many in store for July! If you have been participating, keep it up! A couple reminders before I end this off. Don’t forget to participate in the challenges to receive 5 banana points per question and please continue submitting articles and visuals! Also, feel free to contact me anytime and keep the feedback coming! I hope you enjoy this issue :)
Stay Safe,

DNE Challenge: How do you plan to improve yourself (academically, mentally, Athletics, Etc.) this summer?
Newsletter Editor
We are already over halfway through 2020 and have spent over a quarter of it sheltering in place :) Although this probably isn’t the summer any of us had imagined, please do your part in fighting this pandemic. I know abiding by the rules during these unprecedented times are becoming increasingly more difficult, but please cooperate with the guidelines. I hope you are all taking this abundance amount of time to catch up on rest as well as continuing to volunteer and contribute to your club!

Aloha Aqua Apes! I hope that you’re all enjoying the hot weather and relaxing now that we’re all out of school. Now that it’s nice outside I’ve been trying to start running more regularly (which has been incredibly hard since I haven’t gone on a run for months). Even though there is really nice weather, please remember to maintain social distancing guidelines as it’s still important to protect ourselves and family members! Another month during the term has come and gone; this time we had so many service and social events! We baked banana chocolate chip cookies, wrote letters to hospitalized kids (hosted by San Mateo :), colored pictures to brighten someone’s day, and last but not least - we had a Region-wide Key Club Training Conference! A lot of time and planning went into each of these events, and I hope that you were able to attend at least one of them this past month. Even though KCTC was online, when usually it’s a fun in-person event filled with workshops and even a water-balloon fight, I hope that you all had fun and learned something new! Looking at the month ahead, please make sure to take advantage of your free time, whether that’s planning events in your clubs, learning a new hobby, or making progress on some summer homework. There’s so much we can do with the help of the internet and social media, so the options for learning are limitless!! If you need a recommendation of things to do, I got you covered. Feel free to reach out anytime! See you all soon :)
Reaching for the stars of service,

Amazing Apes
Member of the Month: Grace Park (Lowell) She consistently goes to the events and helps with writing articles. She’s been active despite it being summer and attends whenever she’s available.
Officer of the Month: Kaelyn Fung (Mills) She is really nice to her board members, even if there may be an element of frustration from low morals due to quarantine. It’s what makes her efficient in keeping things running. While not president of her club, she upholds the responsibilities of one.
Club of the Month: San Mateo During June, San Mateo hosted the Cards for Hospitalized Kids Division Wide Service Project! They did a great job organizing the RSVP form, making the presentation, and hosting the event. The club is doing an amazing job at being active on the division level and hosting individual club meetings and service projects. Overall, they have grown so much in the past few months and are an integral part to the division!
Advisor of the Month: Gerry Weiss (Aragon) Even when he couldn’t make certain events through zoom he would always find a way to join us!

Baking in Quarantine Division Social Event
On Friday, June 5th, key clubbers from our division came together to bake banana chocolate-chip cookies, socialize, and use the scraps from the cookie ingredients to make fertilizer! I had a great time getting to know division members better and create new connections within the Key Club family. Baking is one of my favorite hobbies, so the idea could not have been any better in terms of enjoyment. During the meeting, we first did some interesting icebreakers, discussing which kitchen appliance you’d keep during a zombie apocalypse. Then we all followed Lisa (the Service and Fundraiser Coordinator) in baking instructions, having small talk in between each step. When we were done, we crushed our dehydrated banana peels and eggshells to make fertilizer, which would not only improve the plant’s health, but reduce the waste humans create. The fertilizer portion was equivalent to thirty minutes of service, and after finishing, we all took photos together and said goodbye. This event truly brightened my day and allowed many to benefit the environment. It was a great way to reconnect, despite shelter-in place, and I look forward to doing more social and service events like these in the future!

Kaelyn Fung Mills Key Club
I had a blast at this event, I really hope this becomes a monthly social. I loved talking and listening to my fellow Aqua Apes while participating in one of my favorite hobbies. Unfortunately I didn’t have the ingredients for the cookies, but I did have bananas and eggs. I never knew that all my banana peels and eggshells could have been turned into fertilizer, and now that I know in the future I’ll be putting my waste into good use. This is an event you’ll never see happening if we weren’t all stuck in quarantine, but I’m happy to have experienced it. It was fun and an amazing way to help out the Earth. I hope to participate in further creative quarantine events similar to this one. Anni Zhang Westmoor Key Club
The Banana Baking Social and Service event was enjoyable and amusing. Due to the lack of ingredients, I was only able to create regular chocolate chip cookies. However, the idea of utilizing the leftover banana peels and eggshells to create fertilizer was a good way to contribute ecologically to our environment. The banana peels and eggshells were biodegradable, which is a huge factor in the making of fertilizer and I thought that was a smart idea instead of throwing the leftovers away. Furthermore, my peers were friendly and outgoing, reassuring us that we were not alone. Everyone was having fun and the joy of contributing to our environment whilst having fun was memorable. Animal Toy Making Carlmont
On Thursday, June 4th, Carlmont’s Key Club held a Dog and Cat Toy Making service event. At the event, we were able to create rope toys for dogs by cutting up old t-shirts into strips and then braiding them. For the cat toys, we used yarn to create pom poms. Additionally, fabric toys were made for the cats by stacking pieces of fabric and then tying them into a knot. All of the homemade toys would go to animals at Bay Area Animal Rescue. I had fun repurposing old t-shirts that were just sitting around to create new toys that would benefit the cats and dogs at the rescue. Overall, I enjoyed the dog and cat toy making service event and I’m glad that we could provide these homemade toys for the cats and dogs at Bay Area Animal Rescue. Jocelyn Owen Carlmont Key Club
Lowell
At the Dog Toy Crafts event, we learned how to make dog toys. We found an old t-shirt and cut it up into strips. We tied the strips together and braided them to create dog toys. As we made the toys we were also able to talk with other Key Clubbers. I hope that when the toys get donated, it will make many dogs happy! It was a very fun experience and I’m looking forward to more events to help out animals.

UCLA Letter Writing Event
During the UCLA letter writing event, we gave our support to the hard working medical staff at UCLA’s hospital by writing appreciative messages and drawing pictures. We were given the option of either writing longer letters, or short messages for healthcare workers and we were free to write and express ourselves however we liked. After I sent in my letters, the UCLA team sent back a reply thanking us for the kind messages, which made the event feel even more rewarding. Overall, the UCLA event was a fun and relaxing way to show our appreciation for our California healthcare heroes! Ashley Zheng Carlmont Key Club
Senior Coastsiders Event
The Senior Coastsiders event was a really fun event to do during shelter in place. The letters that we ended up writing were so heartwarming as I read over them! It was really amazing to see the massive amount of letters that were sent out from just our club! We have a total of 24 volunteers and 46 letters sent out to the Coastsiders organization! We have a total of 24 hours gained from this event thanks to the amazing volunteers! I’m looking forward to more letter-writing events in the future! Sanjna Sood Carlmont Key Club

Club Summary
Aragon:
For the month of May, Aragon Key Club had our 15 year anniversary. Our alumni got to reminisce with our members. Aragon also went to the May DCM service event. Five of our members participated in making dog toys and four of our members got on the DLT for the 20-21 term. On May 14, we had six members participate in the Cranes for a Cure service event and had our board meeting. There we updated our service and fundraising goals for the term. We also had our last meeting of the school year and played Codenames with our members. Because of COVID-19, we are still trying to find new ways to earn service hours and increase membership attendance.
Carlmont:
- Anna Abelgas
This month, our service projects coordinator has been continuing our ongoing Mask Making Project, aiming to provide masks for our school’s faculty & students. We’ve continued with creating weekly zoom service events meetings for members to attend, ranging from writing thank you letters to workers at UCLA Healthcare Center & Healthcare Heroes at UCSD Medical Center! We also made dog & cat toys to donate to our local bay area animals rescue. We’re looking forward for our next event “Love Letters for Literacy,” where we will be creating alphabet cards to promote literacy for low income students!
El Camino
- Lisa Ngyuen
In the past month of May, our club’s board is preparing to attend KCTC. It’s a great opportunity for all the board members, especially since for most, this is their first year of a Key Club officer. I think it will be a lot of fun and informative for the club’s board. Additionally, we planned our club visitation with Kristen in June. Members who paid for DCON did get their money back, which is good. In the future, we’ll try holding board meetings once a month.
Hillsdale
- Alex Quemuel
This past month, Hillsdale Key Club has been working more toward organizing the behindthe-scenes of the club through more coordination between officers as well as Kiwanis advisors. We’ve also been attending division wide events like letter writing and updating our members through google slides presentations sent over Remind. Currently, we are seeing if any members are interested in attending events such as KCTC or Harvest Food Bank distribution. Coming up, we would like to focus on member engagement, maybe looking into including things like a spirit week to utilize the reach of our instagram page. Finally, we are continuing to research for more events and service opportunities to organize for our club.

- Gwendolyn Arzaga
Jefferson: During the month of May, we have been trying our best to find new volunteer opportunities for our club members to participate in, while also encouraging them to take part in as many key club activities as possible! Though our member participation is low, the spirits of our officers are high! Some service activities we have been doing include mask making, Freerice.com, poster making, letter writings as well as volunteering with the American Diabetes Association. Other than service we’ve recently had our last key club general meeting of the school year where we went over upcoming events and played scribbl.io! We’ve also recently reached out to a few of our members to create possible sticker designs for our club! We’ll be donating a percentage of the proceeds to an organization in need! We will also be having a board meeting soon to decide on our club goals and to plan for our future club committees. Other than that, we’re now getting ready to participate in the upcoming DWS events this month as well as KCTC!
Lowell:
- Jessica Lam
This past month we continued our work with Masks for All CA which is now expanding and opening new branches, we plan on continuing our work with them throughout the summer. We attended the May DCM and we’re super proud of everyone who applied and made it onto the DLT!! A few of our members have also attended division events in the last month such as the Cranes for a Cure and the dog toy making service after the DCM. We released a member interest form towards the end of May and are excited to be recruiting new members for the upcoming school year. Our board is currently working on finding more virtual events for this summer and we plan on working with organizations such as the American Cancer Society in the future :)
Mills
- Jasmine Bao
During the month of May, Mills Key Club has improved greatly in terms of member involvement and service opportunities. We have attended the May DCM in the beginning of the month, and are encouraging more members to attend for June’s. For Teacher’s Appreciation Week, our club wrote cards to Mills teachers and staff to thank them for their time and effort. We gathered pictures of students with their cards and made it into a collage, then sent it to the school. In the month of May, our board has put a lot of effort into planning the DWS event called “Cranes For A Cure!” During the meeting, we hosted over 50 participants, 9 of which were Mills members, and folded cranes to send to an organization called “Joey’s Wings.” The organization makes art out of the origami and sells it to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. Around 400 cranes were made in the span of 1.5 hours! We are currently coordinating ways to raise funds, one being through an online app that tracks your exercise and turns it into donation money for charities. So far, this month we have attended the Quarantine Service and Social, and we plan to participate in the other events such as Cards for Hospital Kids, Color a Smile, and the Key Club Training Conference.
- Kaelyn Fung
19
Notre Dame: Throughout May, Notre Dame Key Club attended Division Wide Events, such as the May DCM and Cranes for a Cure. We also attended the Social and Service on June 5th. Recently, we sent out a Member Interest Form to our entire school in order to get a better idea of who will be joining us for this term, so that the Board can plan accordingly. The Member Interest Form was very successful! We received a lot of interest from both new and returning members; over 65% of responses were from new members. The Board plans to organize an event that will take place in the next few weeks to give new members more information about Key Club and give everyone an opportunity to get more familiar with each other. Since we have appointed Coordinator Positions for our Club, they will be working closely with the Board to organize this event.
San Mateo:
-Alyssa Enriquez
We have had five meetings during May which have been held on Fridays at 4. After every meeting, we have usually completed 30 minutes of a virtual service event (we have done this 4 times). At the beginning of every meeting, we have a short fun event (ie fun facts, Jeopardy, good news). This includes Freerice, Cranes for a Cure, and writing letters to children in hospitals. We encouraged our members to participate in the last two days of the region’s spirit week, which were in May. We also had members participate in May 6’s e-lemon-ate Wednesday and May 7’s throwback Thursday for Eliminate Week. We’ve had the majority of our members participate in Cranes for a Cure and the dog toy making event. Finally, we decided to continue having weekly meetings for Key Club, although optional.
- Danielle Richards
South San Francisco:
What’s up, Aqua Apes! This past month, South City had our last club meeting of the school year and just had another club meeting to update our members just last Thursday. We have participated in Positive Chalk, Take Out for Good, the Social and Service, Cards for Hospitalized Kids, and other Division events. We are super excited to go to KCTC and serve more this upcoming month!
Westmoor:
-Caroline Narciso
For the past month, we have been trying to find new ways of encouraging our members to participate in our general meetings and also attending Division Events. We have been looking at more creative service events. And since our board is all seniors except our Treasurer, we are trying to find potential members who are interested. We just had our monthly board meeting and we have been talking about even having our own DWS. Due to APs and finals, this month was filled with planning and ideas for the summer and the hopefully upcoming school year! Right now, we’re excited and ready for KCTC and all the amazing service events in the month of June.
