JASON
SAVETHE DATE
It all started online. Jenny-Lynn had a hidden message included in her online profile, requesting that as proof of an individual actually reading her profile, he would have to type the word “pineapple” into his message to her. Jason’s response started with the history of how he slowly grew to love pineapple. Fast-forward to a snowboarding trip with their friends to Whistler, where Jason and his friends planned a proposal on the ski hills and had it secretly filmed using two GoPro video cameras. In the midst of taking group photos (which was by no means out of the ordinary), Jason suggested they take a photo of just Jenny-Lynn and all the boys, at which moment he surprised her by bending on one knee.

TREND WATCH 2014 THE TOP 14 WEDDING TRENDS From your dress to your venue and even to the colour of your table napkins, it's our job as professional event planners to ensure your details are in check and will do nothing but 'WOW' your guests. Text by Events by Emma Photos by Jeremy Hiebert Photography | Featured Event Design: Carmen and Chris
With the wedding industry constantly evolving, the planning mentality for the 2014 bride will be "aiming to please"—please your guests, that is. This year's top trends are all about leaving your guests with a unique and memorable experience, revolving around great entertainment, custom and upscale menus, and fun, interactive components. Lucky for you, we're listing the top wedding trends for 2014 to help you create an unforgettable day, sure to leave your guests reminiscing about your wedding for years to come.
1 LUXURIOUS BRIDE This year, we'll see a shift from the vintage and DIY-inspired bride to a more luxurious, glamorous bride. This trend originated from the royal wedding back in 2011, and we’re continuing to see lace sleeves, pearl accessories, detailed beading and even higher necklines.
2 TALLER AND LONGER CENTREPIECES Rectangular reception tables were introduced a few years ago as a modern and space-efficient alternative to the traditional round guest tables. In 2014, the new trends for tablescapes again favour rectangular tables, with taller and elongated centrepieces. We’re seeing a lot of alternation between tall, extravagant vases or candelabras and a cluster of smaller vases and candles. Alternation of arrangements on the same table can create a full, lavish look.
3 EVENT PRODUCTION For 2014 weddings, we'll see more thought and effort put into the actual 'event production' of weddings. Guests want to be engaged and entertained throughout the entire wedding reception, so why not mix in a video or an interactive performance in between speeches? Better yet, skip the traditional DJ and add a live band to your reception program who can play your favourite hits and covers. To top it off, do something FUN for your grand entrance, like a confetti cannon!

EXPERT ADVICE
4 SLOW-MOTION VIDEO BOOTH Speaking of interactive, one of our favourite new wedding trends for 2014 is the slow-motion video booth, which is a fun and unique twist on the traditional photo booth. Silly string, bubbles, confetti, and hilarious hats and props dress up your booth's appeal. The booth will leave your guests entertained all night, and when the video goes through final edits, you'll have a unique keepsake to remind you of your day.
5 CUSTOM FOOD MENUS AND PRESENTATION With the increase in reality TV shows like Master Chef and Chopped, viewers are more educated and exposed to fine-dining courses and presentation, which means it's going to a take a lot more than a typical chicken and potato main course to impress your guests. Satisfy their cravings with buffet-style food stations or even a latenight food truck. Don't be afraid to ask your caterer about a custom menu—you might be pleasantly surprised!
6 CUSTOMIZED FURNITURE Unique furniture such as lounge chairs, couches, and side tables can do a lot for the overall look and feel of your wedding. Switch up those basic chairs for a sweetheart couch at the head table, or add lounge furniture on the dance floor to help create a warm and inviting atmosphere for your guests. Oh, and if in case you're wondering, chiavari chairs are here to stay this upcoming wedding season. They instantly transform a plain ballroom to a glamorous and couture occasion.
7 DAZZLING BLUE AND WHITE According to the Pantone Fashion Colour Report for Spring 2014, dramatic statement colours paired with soft pastels will take the runway for wedding season. Our favourite colour palette for 2014 is the Dazzling Blue (Pantone 18-3949) accented with a simple and sophisticated white.

EXPERT ADVICE
8 METALLIC ACCENTS When it comes to wedding décor, metallic accents are key to achieving a luxurious look. Find ways to incorporate metallics in your stationery, table décor, or by creating a photo wall with beautiful metallic frames. A new and upcoming trend is the 'metallic cake,' which is the perfect addition to a elegant and glamorous affair.
9 GUEST FRIENDLY We know it's your special day, but your guests want to feel considered and wellthought of. Go beyond the customized place cards and ensure your guests feel special. You can achieve this by including fleece blankets and bug-spray for them during an outdoor ceremony, or ensure taxi slips are available for guests who have indulged in a few too many signature drinks. Take this one step further by incorporating cell phone charging stations into your décor!
10 PERSONALIZED THEME
12 MARBLE-IZE The marble trend is perfect with the hot colour palettes for 2014, mixing together strong vivid tones with soft creamy pastels. By bringing together a bold combina-

11 REAL VINTAGE Even with the shift towards the luxurious bride, there's still room for a little vintage in your wedding. Dress up the traditional prairie vintage with a more elegant appeal by
14 INTIMATE GUEST LISTS With the increase of a more luxurious and high-styled bride and event, your wedding costs are sure to increase proportionately. In 2014, we'll see a rise in smaller, intimate guest lists to help offset your costs, allowing you to indulge and really host your dream wedding.
including family heirlooms or real antique photos of your loved ones. It will look great and add an extra special touch to your big day. If you want to dress it up further, fine china and unique tea cups can also be used to add more elegance to your table.

Adding character to your table can be as simple as adding small floral arrangements at the base of a tall centrepiece. These roses bring the perfect touch of subdued colour; always be sure to ask your venue what they provide—these charger plates are included at the Fort Garry Hotel; with just a hint of colour, this dramatic centrepiece is perfect for a glamorous wedding; wrapped asymmetrically, simple chair sashes complete the look.

For a touch of floral to an otherwise minimal tablescape, ask your florist for blooms that will bring the best bang for your buck—like these fluffy white hydrangeas; when budget doesn’t allow for personalized menus or charger plates, remember that a napkin folded in a clean, stylish style will bring personality to your table; clean and minimal, a classic candelabra with height provides an elegant aesthetic; when in doubt, put a cover on it. Many banquet chairs are stained, multi-coloured, and less than sightly. A simple slip in a neutral shade will fix that problem pronto.

THE CHEF KRISTEN ROBERTSON B E L A C R E S G O L F A N D C O U N T RY C LU B
Take a tour through chef Kristen Robertson’s kitchen at Bel Acres and you’ll feel like you’re entering her home. The pots are gleaming, a handful of cooks turn and say hi, and something smells like cinnamon. Chef Kristen’s impressive resumé includes time at The Gates on Roblin and the Victoria Inn, but she’s made her home at Bel Acres, where she’s been for the past 7 years. “We take a lot of pride in our food. Every plate that goes out is the best we could possibly put on the table,” says Kristen.
Chef Kristen served us some of Bel Acres’
finest dishes and we were not disappointed. All three entrées were not only moist and delicious, but dripping with flavourful sauces like a rosé and a white wine rosemary sauce. Our "hands-down" favourites, however, were the desserts. With fresh fruit and real whipped cream, they’re sure to leave your guests happy at the end of the night.

REAL WINNIPEG WEDDING When Catherine and Matt became engaged they knew they wanted to tie the knot within a year, knowing that the bride’s medical residency could call her anywhere. With a short timeline and a handful of ideas, they pulled together a dream team of wedding vendors to make it all work. The first task was the location: the groom grew up in Kenora and the bride was raised in the city, so the couple wanted to pull from both backgrounds, tying together the rural, lake atmosphere with a chic feel. They selected The Gates on Roblin, and designed their day to combine a romantic atmosphere with a modern aesthetic.
QUOTE FROM THE BRIDE “I could not have found a better person to help plan our wedding. SOIRÉE EVENT PLANNING is so
incredibly talented and takes care of every detail with ease! I am not a creative person and she took my ideas and created something that was better than I could have dreamed about!”
Opposite Catherine and Matt were married under a canopy of lush pink and white blooms, bringing a romantic aesthetic to the outdoor ceremony; the bride's bouquet was composed of softly shaded pink, lavender, and cream flowers, including hydrangea, roses, lisianthus, and mini calla lilies; the bridesmaids selected simple, floor-length blush dresses; the newly married couple enjoys some quiet time after the ceremony. This Page A stroll down the paths at The Gates on Roblin provides the perfect photo locations; simple bouquets of pale pink roses and greenery dress up the ceremony chairs.

THE CEREMONY SITE
Talk about a unique setting: before walking down the aisle, Sarah walked through a set of antique doors. This page It took work, but it sure was worth it. What was once a cow pasture was turned into the perfect ceremony spot after an entire summer's worth of work under the hot sun. Opposite The beautiful bride; Sarah carried a oneof-a-kind bouquet made using vintage brooches and a piece of a tree branch; the bridesmaids' bouquets were created from handmade paper flowers.
Sometimesq , it's the
couples who grow up together that stay together. In Sarah and Chris' case, this is certainly true—after all, they were in the same day care as toddlers. They officially started dating in high school, endured two long years of long-distance while Chris was studying in Vancouver and Sarah was finishing up college in Winnipeg, and finally, after another three years (and 10 years as a couple!), the proposal came. Chris led his bride-to-be on a romantic scavenger hunt, surprising her with the first clue on her way home from work on an ordinary day. After a blindfolded drive, they ended up in front of their old high school, where they first fell in love. Despite Sarah always saying she didn't want an engagement ring, Chris proposed with the perfect diamond ring and they started planning a country wedding at Sarah's family farm.

REAL WINNIPEG WEDDING Although Eric and Sarah worked for the same company, they had never gotten to know each other until they were sent to San Diego for a large district meeting. While spending time together, Sarah quickly realized that Eric was the right man for her, but whether or not he felt the same way made her nervous. Luckily, their flights were delayed, giving them more time to explore the city together, sparks flew and two years later, they were engaged.
Children are a big part of Sarah and Eric’s
lives, so integrating their family, friends, and several children with a beautiful, intimate atmosphere was their top priority. Sarah’s son practiced a piano selection for months to play his mother down the aisle, and not only did the couple write their own vows to each other, but they also made vows for their children, bringing them together as a complete family circle.

REAL WINNIPEG WEDDING BOTH MARISA AND TROY were surprised to find
themselves quickly falling in love after being set up by Marisa's mom. Troy recalls, “the moment she walked in, I was smitten.” As one date turned to two and then three, the timing was right and the pair realized they were heading in an amazing direction. When Troy proposed one year to the day after their first meeting, the bride-to-be was so excited she couldn't even open the ring box. When it came time to plan the wedding, they were both on the same page: traditional, elegant, and intimate were the keywords, focusing on the joining of their families. Enter Amanda Douglas Events, who assisted in designing a beautiful reception with Planned Perfectly and Fache Floral Designs, on top of keeping the day running smoothly.
This Page With the bridesmaids in deep plum cocktail dresses, adding in deep shades of red and plum to the bouquets to create a luxurious feel; the décor played up the classic ambiance of the Manitoba Club, thanks to a subdued colour palette with plenty of natural greenery. Opposite Marisa carried a traditional bouquet of white and red roses, deep red ranunculus, and eggplant mini calla lilies; a stunning cake by Jenna Rae Cakes added a luxurious feel to the reception with gold button accents; the newlyweds are showered with confetti after the ceremony; lush wreath-style centrepieces incorporated white hydrangea, red roses, and bright greenery.

A wedding inspired by love letters and worldly treasures...Brides today are incredibly lucky because of the amazing range of ideas and inspiration that can become a reality for their weddings. We are head over heels in love with this deep, unique wedding style. 110 | I T S LO V E

The base of this bouquet was built with a range of unique items, intending to showcase the theme by using feathers, wild-looking eucalyptus foliage, and large King protea blooms from South Africa. The colour palette and textures selected for the bouquet needed to have the same depth and 'worldliness' in order to fit with the luxe bohemian feel. To balance the bouquet with feminine and rich, “loveinspired colours, Fache Floral Designs added deep red ranunculus and soft pink garden roses. The hues pop against the more subdued base palette. Finishing off the bouquet with the mint-blue ribbon wrap is a modern execution of the traditional "something blue," and adding a wooden elephant brooch was to bring the 'worldly' theme full circle.

Planning a Themed Wedding TA K I N G I N S P I R AT I O N from a distinct concept and transforming it into a beautiful wedding theme can be challenging. And when you’re working with something as dramatic as Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter’s tea party, the line between child’s party and elegant wedding can be easy to cross.

How oq
bring it all together? First, start with your colour selection. Minimize the cartoon aspect of your theme with a sophisticated palette, such as purples, browns, and deep reds.
116 | I T S LO V E
C A | W I N T E R 201 4
Next, spin that initial inspiration into a modern aesthetic. For this Mad Hatter tea party, we brought in a refined, Victorian feel using lush greenery and moss, dramatic makeup, and overthe-top hair styles. Finally, go with the flow. If you find something you desperately want to incorporate into the wedding but it’s not a perfect match with your initial theme, work it in. Featuring your own character and personality will ensure that your wedding is not an exact replica of an over-the-top theme.

"For any bride who really loves a strong theme, such as Alice in Wonderland, but wants to incorporate it into her day in a classy, elegant way, we suggest focusing on the smaller details. Cookies designed to look like playing cards; stationery in a muted palette of reds, blacks, and golds; of course, some form of rabbits—painting small figurines gold makes it a little more chic!"

THE RING MOKADA CUSTOM JEWELRY DESIGN STUDIO Something sparkly and one-of-a-kind is never hard to find at Mokada. Their modern Waterfront Drive studio is home to an ever changing selection of exquisite jewellers, many of which Mokada represents the work of exclusively. Relaxed, one-on-one appointments are held in a private setting and are incredibly interactive, with expert staff to make recommendations and impart expertise. The owners at Mokada believe that no one should be made to feel rushed, pressured, or limited when making such an important decision. A bride finds an instant sense of comfort and camaraderie, and her intimate involvement in the design process leaves her with a proud sense of ownership.

"Mokada hopes to dispel the myth that custom is a code word for expensive. Custom is a synonym for unique, exclusive, one of a kind...but it need not break the bank. Mokada can meet any budget and our state of the art design program can find ways to reduce price; not glamour. The ability to hand select your stone and pair it with a mount that YOU designed often represents the highest value. Jewelry is expected to be worn (sometimes everyday) and it should be distinct...just like you!" MONA, OWNER

BEAUTY SPOTLIGHT TIPS AND TRICKS TO GET THE LOOK YOU WANT Rimpal is the founder and lead makeup artist at Makeup Expressions, a Winnipeg based company offering on-site makeup and hair services for any occasion you would like to look your best. Text and Makeup Rimpal Kaler, Makeup Expressions by Rimpal Photos Brittany Mahood Photography Dress Watters Hair Bob and Page Salon
S K I N Think of your skin as the canvas of your face. It is so important for it to look
flawless without looking like you’re wearing too much makeup. The first important trick for a flawless face is selecting the right foundation: when matching your foundation colour, make sure the shade carries through, so the shade on your face is the same on your neck. You want your whole face, neck, and décolleté to be the same colour. For this particular look, I wanted to keep the skin flawless and dewy looking, so I used Nars Sheerglow Foundation.
C H E E K S Blush helps to add that “blushing bride glow” we all love. Bridal whites,
although beautiful, can sometimes be difficult to wear as they can wash you out. Avoid this by emphasizing your face, adding more colour to your cheeks than you may naturally have. The model is wearing Nars Bronzer in Laguna and Nars Blush in Torrid.
E Y E S My goal when applying makeup is to find one focal area, and focus on that.
If we decide the eyes should be the focus, I will keep the rest of her look softer and let the eyes stand out the most. When you have too much going on, such as a dark lip and very smokey eyes, they will fight each other, while the goal should be for all areas to compliment each other. The model is wearing warm tones of eye shadows in browns and bronzes, focusing on bringing out her beautiful green eyes. After bringing out the eye colour, a black liner exaggerates the shape. My all-time favourite waterproof eye liner is the Mac Fluid Line in Carbon. And of course, that perfect finishing touch is the addition of false lashes to enhance her natural lash line—a must for every bride!
L I P S In keeping with the overall soft look here, I decided a soft pink would be
best for the lips. Brides often tell me they weren’t planning on wearing anything on their lips, but having a little something is so important to complete your look! For this style, I used Lovelorn by Mac, and added a touch of gloss (Pink Nouveau, also by Mac). When choosing your lipstick or gloss colour, keep in mind the upkeep it may need. Soft colours will not require as much reapplication, whereas a bold, vibrant, or dark shade will.

TEN SPA

BRIDAL BEAUTY
Most brides will book in a few spa treatments before the wedding, whether it be a basic manicure and pedicure, or something to relieve all that wedding planning stress. Many experts recommend that as a bride is getting toned for her wedding dress, she also start an excellent skin care, nail care, and hair care regimen. We took the task of spa testing upon us (it was very hard!), and we have to recommend a visit to Ten Spa to every bride.
Without a doubt, the best part about the Ten Spa is the atmosphere. Every
time I push past the reception doors, I feel as if I’m floating on happiness. I feel pampered entering the women’s change and steam room, lounge around eating delightful snacks, and then, the most magical moment happens: my name is called. It’s true that there are less expensive spa options around Winnipeg, but I’ll tell you, I’ve tried several of them and none of them live up to Ten Spa. You’ll find yourself both relaxed and invigorated, and for good reason. The spa menu has a wide variety of options, some more basic and others more interesting, and every individual can find something that’s perfect for them.

LAUREN’S REVIEW “If you really want to relax, the hot stone massage is what you MUST do. I was so sad to find out that partway through my massage, I had fallen asleep. I was so relaxed that I just drifted off, but I was sad because it meant that I was missing out on how awesome the massage was. My facial was also great, but talk to a facialist about when is the best time for you to do it before your wedding. It was very relaxing but I was breaking out for a few weeks after.”
ASHLEY’S REVIEW “I've never been to a spa before, so I was very impressed with the quality of service at Ten Spa. The atmosphere was relaxing, and the staff was attentive and professional. I had a full body massage, which was incredible—at times, it felt like there were 3 people massaging me at once. The pressure was just right and I didn't leave feeling sore, just relaxed. The pedicure was by far the fanciest I've ever had, and also the most effective—my feet were so soft by the time they were done. I think a manicure and pedicure is a must for any bride-to-be a day or two before their wedding. Overall, I felt completely pampered at Ten Spa. You leave there feeling refreshed and totally polished!”
HEALTH &BEAUTY AFTER THE HONEYMOON IS OVER: AVOIDING POST-MARITAL WEIGHT GAIN Every “bride-to-be” obviously wants to look her best on her wedding day. shape. The wedding celebrations and events leading up to it are now a beautiful distant memory, yet memory alone can’t quite recall exactly how excess weight suddenly appeared within the first year of being husband and wife. Enter: post-marital weight-gain. Skip a workout here, order some greasy takeout there, and before you know it, you have more than just butterflies in your stomach—you've got a full-on muffin top hanging over your waistband. Getting comfortable in a relationship, we establish new habits together that aren't always the best for our health or waistlines. So, here are your Do’s & Dont's to avoid marital weight gain after you say your “I Do’s.”

DON’T USE FOOD AS ENTERTAINMENT.
DO PRACTICE THE 90/10 RULE.
People bond over food, and enjoying it can almost become a special ritual in a couple’s relationship. That's bad news for your waistline. Instead of always engaging in decadent dinner dates, try entertaining yourselves in other activities you enjoy together. We all still need to eat, but instead of making food the main focal point of the evening, decide to go for a walk, bike ride, or join a local gym together.
Ninety-percent of the time, eat healthy, nutritionally balanced, clean meals. Ten-percent of the time, treat yourself and your spouse. Not only will you maintain a healthy body composition as a young married couple, you will be practicing proactive healthy behaviours for later in life.
